YEREVAN. – It is indisputable for all sections of the society that Sunday’s parliamentary elections were conducted at a higher level than in previous years. The Prime Minister of Armenia, Karen Karapetyan, wrote about the aforementioned on his Facebook page. “The vote, which our team [the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA)] got, is binding. We [RPA] clearly realize the accountability we are assuming, and we are determined to bring to fruition the mandate of changes given by the people. “I promise to spare no effort and energy so that we create a NEW ARMENIA, that every citizen of our country feels better than before,” Karapetyan wrote, in particular. According to preliminary results of Sunday’s National Assembly election, the ruling Republican Party of Armenia has received the most number of votes, with over 49 percent.
Lebanese minister of Armenian descent responds to criticism on the Internet Lebanese Minister of Tourism Avedis Guidanian has responded to the criticism made in his address on the Internet after a scandalous TV show, during which he noted that when facing a choice between Armenia and Lebanon, he would choose the former. Although the audience applauded him on hearing his choice, the minister’s answer came under fire, the961.com reports. Several Lebanese even demanded his resignation.
“Let’s make things clear, I am a Lebanese with Armenian roots, Lebanon is my home country,” the minister said. Guidanian was also rebuked for his comments regarding the Turks. “I would not promote anything related to Turkey, none of their products, or establish relations with them. I cannot prevent Turks from coming to Lebanon and I do not want to welcome them at an airport,” he said.
Yelk Bloc will never form coalition with Armenia ruling party YEREVAN. – Yelk [Way Out] Bloc will under no circumstance form a coalition with the Ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), said bloc representative Alen Simonyan, speaking to Armenian News-NEWS.am. “We haven’t received [such] a proposal from the rest of the colleagues, and we haven’t even discussed such a matter,” he added. “Today, there is no such matter on our agenda, and in my view, it will hardly be.” Simonyan noted that Sunday’s parliamentary election in Armenia was conducted with the use state resources, and electoral fraud. “Against this backdrop, the picture of the elections is what we have today,” stated the Yelk representative. Alen Simonyan added, however, that they will not challenge the election results because there are no relevant facts, whereas Yelk Bloc had retained each and every vote it received and no vote was stolen from it. The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) of Armenia has publicized the preliminary results of the National Assembly election, and which are as follows: Republican Party of Armenia – 49.12% (58 seats), Tsaurkyan Bloc – 27.32% (31 seats), Yelk [Way Out] Bloc – 7.77% (9 seats), and Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) Dashnaktsutyun Party – 6.57% (7 seats). The other five political forces that ran for parliament, however, failed to pass the minimum threshold for winning parliamentary seats. According to the CEC preliminary data, the voter turnout in the parliamentary election was 60.93 percent.
Banner Draped Above Bay Bridge Strives to Raises Awareness About Armenian Genocide For the third year in a row, Bay Area drivers traveling into San Francisco across the Bay Bridge will be greeted by a familiar sign on Treasure Island. The banner, which is hanging above the tunnel on the eastern side of the bridge, reads "Armenian Genocide 1915" with a link to GenocideEducation.org. The sign is designed to raise awareness about the roughly 1.5 million Armenians who were killed by the Ottoman Empire more than one century ago. The Turkish government still does not recognize that the genocide occurred, prompting local Armenian community leaders to reignite a discussion about the historical event. "What I would like people to do is to just give it a thought about how they can prevent genocide, how they can recognize genocide and how they can educate them-
selves about what has happened," community leader Alex Bastian said. Roughly 30,000 Armenian community members in the Bay Area contributed to pay for the banner, which will remain in its place for the entirety of April. "It's great for people to see the banner for the whole month of April on the bridge because it brings awareness and will spark interest and that's what we want," community leader Kim Bardakian said. "We want people to go to the website. We want people to see and learn about our history." NBC Bay Area reached out to the Consulate General of Turkey in Los Angeles — the closest to the Bay Area — but has yet to receive a comment. Pete Suratos, NBC Bay Area

Denial Isn’t Just a River in Egypt: Why Every American Should See The Promise By Christopher Atamian and Haykaram Nahapetyan arms of studios and distributors doing business in Turkey— a country of over 80 million inhabitants. That’s too bad because the film is an affecting, sweeping epic in the Doctor Zhivago tradition of old Hollywood movies. It can also teach the world about one of the darkest episodes in 20th century history. Set during the last days of the Ottoman Empire, The Promise follows a love triangle between the brilliant medical student Michael (Oscar Isaac), Ana the beautiful daughter of wealthy Armenians and Chris, an Istanbul-based American journalist. War tears them apart, but as the Armenians are deported from every corner of the Ottoman Empire, love ultimately wins out.
As private screenings for the upcoming Terry George Armenian Genocide epic The Promise are held on the Hill and elsewhere, battle lines are being drawn between those who embrace historical truth and those who would distort or deny it. The eloquent Mary Wald has written elsewhere in this publication about governments trying to control access to information and pirating the internet. As she eloquently points out this is nothing new, but their reach has recently grown in both scope and intensity.
Background for an epic love story: or an Anatolian Slaughterhouse, 1915-1923 From 1915 to 1923, under the cover of World War One, the Ottoman Turkish government slaughtered 3 million innocent Christians living within its borders, including 1,5 million Armenians. The Christians were the most educated and advanced group in the multi-ethnic and multi-religious Ottoman Empire and many of today’s wealthy Turks made their fortunes by seizing (read: stealing) the property and money of the Greeks, Armenians and Assyrians who had been deported and massacred in the most barbaric ways. Armenians were often thrown into caves by the hundreds and doused with sulfur, choked and incinerated in these primitive gas chambers. Others were locked inside churches with their priests and burned alive, drowned en masse in the Euphrates or simply shot and left to die in the open air. For the ensuing hundred years successive Turkish governments have denied any wrongdoing and claimed that they simply “relocated” the supposedly “treacherous” Armenians—who are actually the native inhabitants of Anatolia, along with Pontic Greeks and Assyrians. For fear of paying reparations and out of misplaced ethnic pride and nationalism, Turkey has spent tens of millions of dollars in a concerted PR effort to avoid calling the killings a “genocide,” even though the person who coined the term in 1943—a Polish Jew named Raphael Lemkin—did so specifically with the Armenians in mind, as he stated in a 1952 CBS interview.
Denial: Just Say It Isn’t So Turks have gone to dizzying lengths to absolve themselves of guilt for what is referred to by Armenians as the Medz Yeghern or “Great Crime,” including re-writing their history books and imprisoning people who mention the issue in public or in the press. In the 1940s the Turkish ambassador to the United Stated Munir Ertegun—the father of Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun—successfully stopped MGM from making a movie version of Franz Werfel’s best-selling novel “The 40 Days of Musa Dagh.” The novel chronicles the heroic stand of Armenian civilians from the village of Musa Dagh (Mount Moses) who resisted the onslaught of the Turkish army and were eventually saved by a French battleship that was sailing by the harbor below. Dr. Diane Kupelian recalls how her grandmother Mary Kupelian was hired by MGM as a location scout on the film. Originally from the Musa Ler area herself, Mary Kupelian traveled West from Ohio with MGM authorities

looking for mountainous terrain that would be reminiscent of Musa Dag: “Then suddenly she was told the project had to be terminated. That’s how Turkey succeeded a first time in imposing a gag rule on America,” Kupelian explained in a phone conversation. Fast-forward some eighty years later to 2015 and the release of the $100 million blockbuster film “The Promise,” financed entirely by the late Armenian-American billionaire Kirk Kerkorian. Kerkorian made his fortune buying and selling Las Vegas casinos and ironically once owned MGM. The film premiered at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival and was screened for approximately 1,500 people. Yet overnight some 85,000 negative reviews— mostly one-star—had somehow magically appeared on IMDB: one can only assume that they were penned either by a broad-based coalition of Turks, or perhaps by MIT (Turkish secret service) agents sitting night and day at computer terminals using fake screennames. As producers Eric Esrailian and Mark Medavoy have commented: “We haven’t sent out copies of the film to the public, so there is no way that more than a few thousand people can have seen it.” Some of the comments which accompanied the one star ratings were truly vile, a remarkable collection of racist anti-Armenian and anti-Christian invective. To their credit when they were alerted about what was happening, IMBD executives soon took down all but 32 of the reviews (those that seemed genuine) and they are now closely monitoring comments before posting them. But as this piece goes to press, The Promise is still looking for distribution given what one assumes is opposition from the Turkish
House Oversight Committee probing foreign payments to Michael Flynn The chairman of the House Oversight Committee said Monday that former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn could have to pay back the tens of thousands of dollars that he has received from Russia and Turkey. Rep. Jason Chaffetz said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that the committee is looking into whether Mr. Flynn violated a law that requires retired military officers to receive permission before accepting payments from foreign entities. “As a former military officer, you
are required by law if you are going to take payments directly from these countries. You have to not only seek, but you have to get permissions from the secretary of state [and] from the secretary of defense,” the Utah Re-
publican said. “It appears as if he didn’t do that.” Mr. Chaffetz also rejected President Trump’s characterization of the congressional investigations into the possible collusion between his 2016 presidential and Russia as a “witch hunt” and shot down the idea that Mr. Flynn should receive immunity for his testimony before the House and Senate intelligence committees that are leading the probe. “I don’t think he should get immunity,” he said. “Immunity for what first of all. But if there is an active in-
In the past decade, American and European governments have thankfully refrained from knee-jerk responses to an ever-increasing number of provocations and attacks to their democracy and way of life by Islamic terrorists and Middle Eastern-based jihadists. But in light of recent cyber and real-life attacks across Europe, they may want to revisit how they deal with the continued infiltration of their daily lives and culture. As a broad generalization, Americans are taught from an early age to be democratic and to at least attempt to understand historical truth. American citizens fought and eventually helped to put an end to the bloody Vietnam war and most if not all Americans condemn the enslavement of African Americans and the massacre of Native American populations. An increasing number of museums and scholarship reflects this, though it may be too little too late for many. The same cannot be said of some Middle Eastern countries. In Turkey, for example, it is still an insult to call a someone an Armenian. As one American who works in a large Turkish conglomerate recently explained: “Very few people in Turkey really care about people who are not ethnically Turkish.... And most Turks don’t give a fig about democracy. They know full well what happened to the Armenians in 1915 and they simply don’t care. You have to stop comparing Turkey to Western countries where civil society and governments consider human rights and tolerance as positive values. In Turkey these things are often seen as signs of weakness.” ‘What can one do to fight statesponsored denialism, and how can one help to affect change? In solidarity with the victims of all genocides—Armenians included—and in support of basic human rights and dignity, every American should go out and see The Promise when it is released on April 21st. They should rent the film on line and Tweet, Instagram and Facebook message all of their friends and colleagues to see the film as well. One can only hope that this time, Turkish attempts to deny the Armenian Genocide will go down in unceremonious flames. Having called unprecedented attention to the film by its acts of online denial, the Turkish government may have done the film an unwittingly good turn. As more and more people learn about The Promise, they will also uncover and learn about the tragic events that transpired in Turkey in 1915. “The Huffington Post”, March 28, 2017
Putin: We brought Russian-Armenian relations to a high level Vladimir Putin congratulated Serzh Sargsyan, President of the Republic of Armenia, on the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Armenia. Over the years, and based on the long-standing traditions of friendship and mutual respect that have bound the peoples of Russia and Armenia, we have brought Russian-Armenian relations to a high level of allied cooperation, Kremlin reported. The message reads, in part: “Our political dialogue continues developing dynamically. We work together on several large projects in trade, the economy, science, technology, in the humanitarian and other areas. Our joint participation in Eurasian integration processes is rewarding, and the coordination of efforts in combating the current threats and challenges to regional security have been productive.

Armenia’s government said it could not support two bills proposed by MP Zaruhi Postanjyan condemning the occupation of historic Armenian lands and the dispossession of Armenians from their homeland by the Republic of Turkey. The second bill would have Armenia condemn the “anti-Armenian and illegal” clauses of the 1921 Treaties of Moscow and Kars. Armenian Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan said his government “doesn’t find it conducive to discuss or accept the bills presented.” Karapetyan added that Minister of Foreign Affairs Edward Nalbandian would make a statement on the bills when the parliament holds hearings about them. *** President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan believes that CSTO countries “could provide more active support to Russian Armed Forces in the fight against the ISIS”. “Russia makes a very large contribution to that fight, and we should bear some responsibility too. It’s important for Armenia also because high numbers of our compatriots used to live in the Middle East. As we know, the Islamic State treats national minorities with particular cruelty, especially the Christians. My brothers and sisters suffered greatly from that in Syria and Iraq. Of course, the sooner ISIS fighters are wiped out, the better for the entire human race. We are ready to provide further humanitarian aid to the people of Syria, who suffered greatly. I believe that Russia’s current efforts will end successfully,” the President stated in the exclusive interview to Mir TV.

Armenian Language in the Digital Age: The Projects Funded
LISBON, Portugal—The Armenian Communities Department of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation launched an open call for proposals in 2016 pertaining to information technologies and the Armenian language. More specifically, it sought to fund three types of projects: to create a Western Armenian National Corpus (WANC), along with a universal Armenian spellchecker; to develop various digital and interactive resources for teaching purposes, specifically in the diasporan context; and to generate online content by encouraging literary production in both Western and Eastern Armenian. In total 17 proposals from 13 entities were submitted and reviewed by an expert selection committee comprised of three members from the Armenian Communities Department and two independent experts from the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon. The submitted initiatives were evaluated on multiple levels: technology, content, budget and human resources. The selection process was demanding given the high quality of the proposals received. The expert committee had to make some difficult decisions. Unfortunately, only a handful of projects could be supported. The Armenian Communities Department would like to thank all the individuals and organizations who submitted projects. Below are the four initiatives selected by the expert committee which are being funded by the Armenian Communities Department. Spell-checker and Western Armenian Text Corpus – Support is being provided for the development of a universal Armen-
ian spellchecking programme, in both Western and Eastern Armenian, which will work with all major computer programs and mobile apps. A Western Armenian text corpus will also be developed, modelled after current state-of-the-art corpora. Submitted jointly by HySpell and Nayiri.com. Parastan.fr – A free online bilingual thematic dictionary (French-Western Armenian) designed to provide up-to-date lexical information on all domains. Support is being provided to include more words, expressions, a morphological engine and the possibility to filter the lexicon according to language level. Submitted by INALCO. Calfa.fr – A free online digital Armenian platform focusing on classical Armenian. Support is being provided to increase the lexical database, create new features such as an automatic translator and, importantly, to develop an OCR specialized for Armenian manuscripts. Submitted by Chahan Vidal-Gorène (Association pour l’Arménien Classique). “Young Mash project” – A graphic novel to be written with the input of young Armenians from around the world. Support is being provided for the creation and publication of an online serialized participative graphic novel which will recount the fictional youthful adventures of Mesrop Mashots, the inventor of the Armenian Alphabet in the 5th century AD. Submitted by Tumo Center for Creative Technologies. The implementation of these projects started in late 2016. The current IT initiatives are in addition to the other language and technology related projects supported by the Armenian Communities Department during the past several years.

Letter to the Editor: Trustee and President Ryan P. O’Hara responds to letter by Armenian Students Association and the Assyrian Student Association Trustee and USG President discusses Polytechnic Campus recognition of Armenian Genocide and Commemoration on April 24th By Ryan O'hara Ryan P. O'Hara is a Trustee at the ASU Foundation and Student Body President as ASU Polytechnic. He has dedicated his time at Arizona State to the enhancement of the student experience through moral leadership. “Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?" – Adolf Hitler (1939) The Armenian Genocide: Hitler’s justification for ordering the Holocaust. I am writing this in response to the moving letter written by the Armenian Students Association and the Assyrian Student Association regarding our commemoration of the Armenian Genocide at the Polytechnic Campus on Feb. 17th, 2017. As a Trustee and Student Body President, I take pride in our Charter: "ASU is a comprehensive public research university, measured not by whom we exclude, but rather by whom we include and how they succeed; advancing research and discovery of public value; and assuming fundamental responsibility for the economic, social, cultural and overall health of the communities it serves." The passage of Senate Resolution II executes the vision of this Charter.
This recognition would not have come to fruition if it were not for the tireless sacrifice of student activists spreading knowledge of the Armenian Genocide over the past 24 months. From the day this bill was introduced, it became apparent that this was more than a resolution. It was the teaching of history and the recognition of 1.5 million souls that were erased from memory. As this bill came to my desk, I paused to reflect. It shouldn’t be the case that my signature in the capacity of USG President carries any weight towards recognizing one of the grave crimes of the 20th century, from which the word genocide came. I am grateful that I can play the tiniest part in this commemoration by ASU, which is long overdue. I am further heartened by the ASASU Supreme Court Opinion affirming our belief in this principle. Without fear and by establishing precedent, we have opened the door for further cultural acceptance within our University’s halls. The Armenian Genocide witnessed the senseless murder of 1.5 million Armenians, Assyrians, and Greeks between 1915-1923. It is a great crime in world history. By not
reflecting and accepting the truth of this tragedy, we cannot ensure that our own futures will be devoid of similar atrocity. With the ever-spreading conflict in Syria and Iraq, as well as the rise of anti-immigrant rhetoric throughout western democracies, I ask that our students transcend these troubled times to come together to support our Armenian and Assyrian population in commemoration of the Genocide. In this spirit, I call upon my fellow USG representatives, the Administration and my fellow Sun Devils to join me in locking hands with our brothers and sisters in commemoration of the Armenian Genocide on April 24th, 2017. I echo the sentiment of the ASASU Supreme Court calling on students, executive candidates and administration to commemorate the 102nd anniversary of the Armenian Genocide on April 24th, 2017. I shall be standing alongside the Armenian and Assyrian students on this day, and hope that you will be with us. Together, we can heal the wounds of the past to create a brighter future — one heart at a time. Reach the Ryan O'Hara at rpohara@asu.edu statepress.com
Sequel to Hit Armenian Play a Success
NEW YORK, NY – The debut play “Where Is Your Groom? (Pesad Oor Eh)” II sent waves of laughter throughout the Miller Theatre at Columbia University on Sunday, March 26, where more than 500 guests gathered to enjoy the sequel to the funny saga of America’s favorite Armenian family. The comical and contemporary play by Taleen Babayan appealed to all generations and highlighted themes common in today’s Diasporan culture, including balancing assimilation and nationalism, and preserving one’s heritage and language in a melting pot society. The 20-member cast and crew, all Diasporan-Armenians who have a love for Armenian culture and the arts, took to the stage to return to their beloved roles or bring to life vibrant new ones. “So many aspects about participating in this play were incredible,” said Raele Sabounjian, a New York City-based marketing director who played the lead role of Lara, a first generation Armenian-American. “Pursuing a new passion for acting, bringing a talented writer's words to life, and proudly representing my heritage made this experience a phenomenal one.” While the original play revolved around an Armenian-American family’s quest to
find their daughter a suitable partner, the sequel focuses on the overbearing nature of Armenian parents eager to plan a wedding their own way. The play satirizes traditional elements of the Armenian family and cultural life and everyone in the audience found the story appealing, meaningful and comical. “I laughed so much I had tears running down my eyes,” said audience member Ruby Gulian. “I truly enjoyed the performance and I congratulate all of the young Armenians involved on stage and in the audience.” “My entire family enjoyed the dynamic storyline and spot-on cast,” said guest Raffi Salbashian. “We need more professional productions like this in our community.” An added benefit to staging the play performance was the friendships and bonds formed off-stage over the course of a sevenmonth rehearsal process. Though all Armenian, many in the group hadn’t met one another before and enjoyed the opportunity to expand their networks even further. “It was a thrill to be in the company of such dedicated talents serving the Armenian-American community,” said Raffie Bagrevandian, a real-estate professional from Astoria who played the role of Russian-Armenian businessman Sergei. “The
positive support received from the multicultural audience was invigorating and I’m looking forward to collaborating with this magnetic group once again.” “What was important to me, aside from making people laugh, was to stir feeling in the audience,” said writer Taleen Babayan. “I wanted this story and these characters to remain with everyone even after the laughter subsided.”

Zoryan Institute Releases New Book on Fate of Non-Muslims and Christians in Turkey 1913-1923, Contextualizing Issues in the Middle East Today
en one sees what is happening in Turkey right now, how Turkey is dealing with its own minorities, the type of language that the President of Turkey is using in regards to non-Muslim Europe, it all reflects the same narrow, ethno-religious nationalism that prevailed there 100 years ago. It is being used today by the President of Turkey to mobilize masses to fulfill his political objectives. In fact, the non-Muslim groups combined, including Armenians, Assyrians, Greeks, and Jews, now make up only around 100,000 of Turkey's population, as opposed to 4.5 million in Ottoman Turkey before the Genocide." So says George N. Shirinian, editor of a new book titled, Genocide in the Ottoman Empire: Armenians, Assyrians and Greeks, 1913-1923. Shirinian explained what message he wished the reader to take away from this book, which is also part of his own personal history: "Being the son of two orphan survivors of the Armenian Genocide, I was always very aware of the devastating effect the Genocide has had on Armenians, and it always bothered me to read in some books that it took place as a legitimate reaction by the Ottoman state to a so-called Armenian revolt against the whole Ottoman Empire. I began to undertake research years ago to verify if this was true, and to understand what the causes of the Armenian Genocide were. Through my years of research and the preparation of this book, what I would like for the reader to understand is that some 4.5 million people, primarily Armenians, Assyrians and Greeks, were either killed or uprooted from their ancestral homes during a short, ten-year period. This is essentially because they were non-Turks and non-Muslims. There were numerous factors that led to these genocides, but it is now clear that the alleged Armenian revolt was a fabrication of the Young Turks to stir up their own citizens against the Armenians, to provide a justification to their German allies so they would not intervene, and to keep the neutral but very engaged Americans from interfering. This becomes especially clear when you see that the Young Turks also deported and massacred the Assyrians and Greeks, who definitely were not part of any alleged revolt."
