A PUBLICATION OF ARMENIAN DEMOCRATIC LIBERAL PARTY, WESTERN DISTRICT COMMITTEE OF THE UNITED STATES H. RES. 354 UNANIMOUSLY PASSES HOUSE FOREIGN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE

Resolution Condemns Turkish Violence Against Peaceful Protesters WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the House Foreign Affairs Committee unanimously adopted House Resolution 354, reported the Armenian Assembly of America (Assembly). H. Res. 354 condemns the violence against peaceful protesters outside the Turkish Ambassador’s residence on May 16, 2017, and calls for measures to be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. House Foreign Affairs Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA) was joined by Ranking Member Eliot Engel (D-NY), Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), and Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) in introducing H.Res. 354, requesting "the perpetrators to be brought to justice." On the passage of H.Res. 354, Chairman Royce said: “Armed members of President Erdogan’s security detail savagely beat, choked and kicked protesters in an unprovoked assault aimed at silencing these American citizens’ right to free speech and assembly. This timely resolution sends a clear signal to the Turkish government that we will not allow any foreign government to stifle the rights of our citizens.” H.Res. 354 says that "any Turkish security officials who directed, oversaw, or participated in efforts by Turkish security forces to illegally suppress peaceful protests on May 16, 2017, should be charged and prosecuted under United States law." The Resolution continues: "the United States should take steps to strengthen freedoms for the press and civil society in countries such as Turkey, and combat efforts by foreign leaders to suppress free and peaceful protest in their own countries." Shocked to see Erdogan’s thugs attacking peaceful protesters, Ranking Member Engel stated: “I had been invited, actually, to go to that meeting at the Turkish Embassy. I didn’t go, and I’m glad I didn’t go because I was just horrified when I heard what happened...This Resolution calls for those responsible to face justice. This is a much bigger issue. We’ve seen a troubling pattern from Turkey in recent years, but if Turkish government officials come to our country and try to stifle American democracy and freedom of speech, there must be consequences.” During the markup, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) announced that she will send a bipartisan letter with Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) to the Department of Justice and Department of State, asking for “immediate accountability from the Turkish government for these disgraceful attacks.” Rep. Ros-Lehtinen added: “This behavior is intolerable. The letter asks those involved to be brought to justice immediately with the participating Turkish personnel in the U.S. expelled and those abroad barred for future entry.” Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia and Emerging Threats Chairman Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) commented on Turkish President Erdogan watching his security detail while they brutally beat Americans and “bloodied these people who have every right to be there protesting as U.S. citizens.” He continued: “I hope he gets the message through this legisla-

tion. He is not welcome in the United States if he is going to think he can attack Americans who are expressing their opinion and are in opposition to his policies.” Subcommittee Chairman Rohrabacher also said President Erdogan is turning Turkey into “the worst type Islamic terrorist dictatorship that exists in the world...This is not the person we should be kissing up to. He made the situation even worse when he called the American Ambassador a few days ago, and in an arrogant insult to the American people suggested that we should in some way apologize for the brutal attack of American citizens by his own bodyguards. If he thinks this way, he is not welcome in our country.” Subcommittee Chairman Rohrabacher also scheduled a hearing on this matter entitled: “Violence Outside the Turkish Ambassador’s Residence: The Right to Peaceful Protest.” “Turkey has been on a downward spiral under the aspiring dictator[ship] of Erdogan. Erdogan has spared no effort to undermine Turkey’s democratic institutions, and he attacks civil liberties in Turkey. Now Erdogan thinks he can bring his crackdown on basic rights to the United States to Washington D.C., the seat of democracy in the world,” Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX) said. “This kind of vicious behavior is unacceptable anywhere in the world, but especially here in America, in Washington, D.C. That’s why I strongly support this resolution that condemns this violence and calls on our government to raise the issue with Turkey. Freedom of expression is essential to the foundation of America, and it’s clear that Erdogan does not honor this most basic right.” Rep. Poe concluded: “This attack by a foreign dictator on our constitutional basic right of speech is most disturbing. So while Erdogan continues his path of dictatorship in Turkey by violently quashing all opposition, this resolution sends - I hope - a message we will have no foreign tyrant violate our sacred rights on American soil. Justice demands that something occur and that he be held accountable and Turkey be held accountable because justice is what we do in this country.” Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY) added that “whether you agree or disagree, you’re supposed to have the freedom, especially here in the United States...What took place was horrific and we all need to speak out against that.” Along with other Members’ statements, Rep. Chris Smith (D-NJ) stated that the Turkish bodyguards’ violence was “especially egregious” and Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI) said those actions were “absolutely appalling and will not be tolerated.” "The Armenian Assembly applauds the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, under the leadership of Chairman Ed Royce along with Ranking Member Eliot Engel, for its swift consideration and passage of this bipartisan resolution in response to Turkey’s assault against our most cherished and fundamental values. We urge the Senate to follow suit as well," stated Assembly Executive Director Bryan Ardouny.

Armenia President receives OSCE Secretary General !"#"$%&'('President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan on Tuesday received OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier, who has arrived in Armenia to discuss the opportunities and prospects for continuing the Armenian-OSCE cooperation. President Sargsyan welcomed the guest, lauding his cooperation with Armenia as an OSCE Secretary General. Mr Zannier expressed regret over the suspension of the mandate of the OSCE Office in Yerevan, noting that the organization is nevertheless willing and interested in continuing the further cooperation with Armenia. The interlocutors expressed satisfaction with the involvement of Armenia in all the platforms of the OSCE activity and discussed the opportunities for deepening and expanding the cooperation in other formats. During the meeting, reference was also made to the settlement of the NagornoKarabakh issue within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group.

– OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier regrets closure of the OSCE Yerevan office. Speaking during a media conference in Yerevan, Zannier recalled that OSCE is acting based on consensus and according to the same principle, the organization is not pointing at a party that violated consensus. “I do regret the closure of the office in Yerevan. We are trying to find ways to continue our work,” he added. Zannier said his mandate expires soon and added it was pleasant to work with Armenia. Unfortunately, it was impossible to reach a consensus, but there are many issues and initiatives on the agenda, he said, adding that the closure of the office is only the end of one chapter and the start of new ways of cooperation. OSCE Yerevan office will close in late August due to the fact that Azerbaijan, under the pretext of trainings for demining experts implemented by OSCE, has blocked the budget of the office. news.am

Cyprus FM: Artsakh is the historical land of Armenians Within the framework of his official visit to Cyprus, Defense Minister of Armenia Vigen Sargsyan met with Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades. Welcoming the delegation led by the Armenian Defense Minister, President Anastasiades expressed conviction that the visit will give a new impetus to the deepening of the age-old Armenian-Cypriot cooperation. The President highly appreciated the role of the Armenian community in the development of the country. Upon the request of Vigen Sargsyan, Nicos Anastasiades briefed him on the recent developments around the Cyprus issue. The Armenian Defense Minister thanked the Cypriot President for the latter’s constructive and consistent stance on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. On the sidelines of his visit, Sargsyan also held a meeting with House President Demetris Syllouris. The former briefed the House President on the constitutional reforms implemented in Armenia, which raised the role of the parliament. In this context, the importance of cooperation be-

tween the parliamentary friendship groups was underscored. At the meeting with Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides, issues on the deepening of bilateral relations, the role of the Armenian community and the development of relations in the defense sphere were discussed. Apart from this, the sides touched on the Cyprus issue and the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The Cypriot FM noted that drawing parallels between these two conflicts is wrong, since unlike Northern Cyprus occupied by Turkey, Artsakh is the historical land of Armenians !

Among the 98 recipients at the 31st Annual Ellis Island Medals of Honor ceremony were eight Armenian honorees

The Scripps Research Institute San Diego Researcher Ph.D. Professor Ardem Patapoutian Receives One of Science’s Highest Honors LA JOLLA, CA – May 2, 2017 – A scientist from The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) in San Diego—Ardem Patapoutian—has been elected to the prestigious National Academy of Sciences for his “distinguished and continuing achievements in original research,” the academy announced today. Ardem joins several other TSRI scientists as members of this exclusive group of scientific scholars. “Ardem has made extraordinary contributions to science,” said TSRI President Peter G. Schultz, Ph.D. “His work, and this well-deserved recognition, place him among an elite group of scientists, and we are incredibly proud to have him as colleague. I wish him a hearty congratulations.” Patapoutian, Ph.D., a TSRI professor and member of the Dorris Neuroscience Center at TSRI and investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, studies how cells “talk” to each other and send signals through the body. His lab works to uncover the basic mysteries of human sensory biology, such as the proteins underlying our sense of touch, and contribute to the development of futuretreatments for disease. “It is truly such an honor to be recognized by the NAS, especially as the need to advocate for strong science public policy is more urgent than ever,” said Patapoutian. “TSRI has truly enabled the cutting-edge techniques that have propelled our research forward.” Patapoutian is among the academy’s 84 new members and 21 foreign associates. The National Academy of Sciences is a private, nonprofit institution that was established under a congressional charter signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. It recognizes achievement in science by election to membership and, along with other groups, provides science, technology andhealth policy advice to the federal government and other organizations. Other National Academy of Sciences members at TSRI are Floyd E. Bloom, Dale L. Boger, Francis V. Chisari, Benjamin Cravatt, Richard A. Lerner, Michael B.A. Oldstone, Julius Rebek, Jr., Paul Schimmel, Peter G. Schultz, K. Barry Sharpless, Peter K. Vogt, Charles Weissmann, Ian Wilson, Chi-Huey Wong, Peter Wright and Kurt Wüthrich. press@scripps.edu

On Saturday, May 13th a group of distinguished Americans gathered on Ellis Island to be recognized for their dedication and contribution. Each of these individuals represented the true spirit of the American way of life, contributing to their national identity while upholding the distinct values and heritage of their ancestors. According to the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations (NECO), the Ellis Island Medal of Honor embodies the spirit of America in their celebration of patriotism, tolerance, brotherhood and diversity. They recognize individuals who have made it their mission to share their wealth of knowledge, indomitable courage, boundless compassion, unique talents and selfless generosity all while maintaining the traditions of their ethnic heritage as they uphold the ideals and spirit of America. Among the 98 recipients at the 31st Annual Ellis Island Medals of Honor ceremony were eight Armenian honorees – Ruth Bedevian, Kurken Yetvart Berksanlar, Lucine Mardirosian Harvey, Andy An-

dranik Madadian, Varant Frank Melkonian, Joan Agajanian Quinn, Ara Tekian and Dr. Garo M. Tertzakian. This group includes successful businessmen, a pioneering physician, artists, philanthropists, community leaders and activists. The ceremony included the honoring of the different recipients of the evening, testimonies by certain 2017 Medal of Honor winners and an opening statement from the chairman of NECO, Nasser J. Kazeminy, where he addressed the importance of immigrants in this nation and the role they play to growth and success of the United States of America. The ceremony was followed by a gala dinner for the recipients and their families to celebrate the beautiful evening and the esteemed honor that had been bestowed that night. The event was concluded with fireworks behind Lady Liberty, highlighting the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, the representatives of the new life that many of these immigrants came searching for all those years ago.

Dear Friends: It's been a long and challenging race, but the end has come and we have a new councilmember in District 7. Although the result isn't what we'd hoped for, I believe our district came out ahead in this election and I would like to offer my sincere congratulations to Monica Rodriguez on her victory. I look forward to working with her to bring our neighborhoods together on the issues we all care so much about. When I look back at the past five months, I can’t help but see how much my campaign accomplished—and it was all due to you. We built a movement against politics as usual that united the equestrian community, environmentalists, people of many nationalities and faiths, small business owners, neighborhood leaders and nearly every other candidate who had the incredible courage to put themselves out there and run for this City Council seat. We brought to light the issues our communities face and, I believe, what we did will be the catalyst for real change in Los Angeles on these issues: Stopping high-speed rail, and bring that money for local transit projects, Protecting our equestrian lifestyle and fixing the K zoning, Bringing the Olympics to Hansen Dam, Improving fire and police services and bringing a new fire station to Sylmar, Saving lives by improving our streets and stopping illegal drag racing, Revitalizing our commercial corridors and bringing in new retailers, Providing positive opportunities for our youth to keep them away from gangs, Finding real solutions to the homeless crisis, Protecting our open space and fighting overdevelopment, and Giving a voice to our communities at City Hall. Thank you for believing in our movement and in me. My many supporters, my family and my friends (both new and old) put their lives on hold to put this movement first. Thank you to the 1,000 people who donated generously to my campaign. Thank you for volunteering, especially the brave folks who came in day in and day out to make phone calls, walk our neighborhoods, write 30,000 letters by hand and do whatever else was asked. It wasn’t always easy, but I hope you’ll agree that it was rewarding. You changed my life and I hope this campaign had a positive impact on yours. I write today not out of sadness, but with a feeling of hope. This is not the end of our movement, it is just the beginning. We still have a lot of work to do to make our communities better. I will be with you all the way. Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart. KARO TOROSSIAN

THE AGBU PERFORMING ARTS DEPARTMENT INTRODUCES ARMENIAN MUSIC TO NEW YORK CITY This spring, the AGBU Performing Arts Department collaborated with Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute (WMI) to have Armenia represented for the first time as part of WMI’s Musical Explorers program. The program is designed to connect students in grades K2 to New York City’s rich and diverse musical community as they build fundamental music skills through listening, singing and moving to songs from all over the world. For four days, hundreds of New York City students and teachers sang traditional Armenian songs together with the acapella folk trio Zulal, the oud player Ara Dinkjian, and the clarinetist Martin Haroutunian, who showed the students several traditional Armenian instruments. Zulal takes Armenia’s village folk melodies and weaves intricate arrangements that pay tribute to the rural roots of the music, while introducing a sophisticated lyricism and energy. The trio’s singers—Teni Apelian, Yeraz Markarian, and Anaïs Tekerian—have been singing together since 2002 and have performed at the Getty Museum, Berklee College of Music, Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage and New York’s Symphony Space, along with performances for Cirque du Soleil and the Silk Road Project. Ara Dinkjian is an Armenian American oud player who has appeared in 22 countries and continues to compose, perform, record and teach. Martin Haroutunian, an accomplished clarinetist, is the director of the Arev Ensemble in Boston, which uses folk and modern instruments to recreate Armenian music. The Musical Explorers program introduces New York City students and teachers to songs and dances from around the world, which they eventually perform along with the artists during the interactive concerts. As part of the program, Zulal led workshops with New York City public school K-2 teachers and advised on the creation of a full curriculum, including an accompanying CD, featuring lessons and creative extensions for semester-long coursework. In the 2016-17 season, along with Armenian folk music, students also learned about bluegrass, Chinese traditional music, Sudanese celebration songs, calypso, and hip-hop, exploring a diverse range of musical genres found in their New York City neighborhoods. “At one moment during the concert, the host asked Ara Dinkjian to play his oud together with the steel pan of the calypso musician and the beats of the hip-hop DJ, displaying how diversity can be unified in one piece of music. This concept aligns perfectly with the mission of AGBU PAD: to present our unique culture to the diverse audiences of New York. Hearing hundreds of children from the five boroughs of New York sing Armenian folk songs is the most touching symbol of unity in this immensely multicultural city,” said Hayk Arsenyan, the director of the AGBU Performing Arts Department.

SEBOUH ASLANIAN TO SPEAK AT ARARATESKIJIAN ON THOMAS VARDAPET OF VANAND, ARMENIAN PRINTER Dr. Sebouh Aslanian, the Richard Hovannisian Professor of Modern Armenian History at UCLA, will give a lecture entitled “From Nakhijevan to the Netherlands: Thomas Vardapet of Vanand and Armenian Printing in Amsterdam, 1677-1708,” on Sunday, June 4, 2017, at 4:00 p.m., at the Ararat-Eskijian Museum—Sheen Chapel, 15105 Mission Hills Road, Mission Hills, CA. The lecture is cosponsored by the Ararat-Eskijian Museum and the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research (NAASR). In 1677, an Armenian archbishop named Thomas Vanandets‘i left his small ham-let of Vanand in Nakhijevan with his two nephews and traveled across Asia Minor and all the major courtly centers of Europe in quest of support and patronage for establish-ing Amsterdam’s fourth Armenian printing press in 1695. Relying on a Latin-language memoir Thomas published in London in 1707, an earlier and heretofore-unknown ac-count of his travels published in Spanish in Madrid in 1691, as well as archival docu-ments from a dozen collections in Europe, Prof. Aslanian’s presentation will examine Thomas’s role in the history of Armenian print culture in Amsterdam and explore his forty-year peregrinations, focusing on the ignored but ubiquitous genre of the letter recommendation (!"#$#"%"%"&"# #"'"&) that allowed him to traverse different networks spanning the world of early modern Eurasia. Prof. Aslanian has held the Richard Hovannisian Chair in Modern Armenian History at UCLA since 2012. He is the author of From the Indian Ocean to the Mediterra-nean: The Global Trade Networks of Armenian Merchants from New Julfa (2011) and The Poly-centric Nation: Dispersion History and the role of Simeon Yerevantsi's Girk vor Kochi Partavchar in the Eighteenth Century Armenian National Revival (2004), as well as articles appearing in Annales. State Senate Budget Committee Approves $3 Million for Armenian Museum Portantino Makes Pitch For Glendale Museum Project Sacramento, CA – Senator Anthony J. Portantino invited representatives of the Armenian Museum Project in Glendale to Sacramento to make the case for additional state funding to support the Armenian Museum. The museum project is proposed for the City of Glendale and includes Genocide education and multicultural exhibits. Plans for its creation are underway with broad support from within the Armenian community, including its ten largest organizations. Portantino, with the support of Senate Pro Tem Kevin de León and Budget Subcommittee Chair Richard Roth, arranged a presentation from Armenian Museum Executive Board Member Zaven Kazazian. Portantino joined the presentation in which a total $4 million request was made. Today, the State Senate Budget committee followed up on the request and approved the proposal. “There is a long history of California supporting laudable museum projects around the state and I wanted to make sure that the Armenian Museum garners equal and fair support. Zaven did an

excellent job of making the case for the museum and the committee was quite impressed. It’s a big step forward to have the State Senate Budget Committee insert an additional $3 million into the State Budget for this project,” commented Portantino. Last year, Governor Brown agreed to fund a $1 million request for the museum. Portantino requested increasing the State’s commitment to the museum to an additional $3 million over the next three years. “I couldn’t be happier to see the Senate respond so well to our request. Senate staff, leadership, and members were very receptive and supportive of the museum,” concluded Portantino. Sen. Portantino represents nearly 930,000 people in the 25th Senate District, which includes Altadena, Atwater Village, Bradbury, Burbank, Claremont, Duarte, Glendale, Glendora, La Cañada Flintridge, La Crescenta, La Verne, Lake View Terrace, Los Feliz, Monrovia, Montrose, Pasadena, San Dimas, San Marino, Shadow Hills, Sierra Madre, South Pasadena, Sunland-Tujunga, and Upland.

SENATE APPROVES FUNDING FOR ARMENIAN GENOCIDE EDUCATION UNDER PORTANTINO’S CHAIRMANSHIP Sacramento, CA – Senator Anthony J. Portantino is proud to announce the addition of $16 million dollars in the State Senate Education Budget Subcommittee spending plan to fund the History-Social Science curriculum framework, which includes teacher training for the Armenian Genocide and other important historical updates. Last year, the California State Board of Education (“CSBE”) adopted a new History-Social Science curriculum framework with guidelines for public school teachers. This framework provides significant improvements and expanded language and scope of information regarding the Armenian Genocide. The additions regarding the Armenian Genocide were a result of collaborative work between the ANCA-WR, the Genocide Education Project (“GenEd”), the Instructional Quality Commission (IQC), Superintendent Tom Torlakson, and a culmination of the initiative taken by Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian (D – San Fernando Valley) and the Armenian Legislative Caucus beginning with the Armenian Genocide Education Act (AB 1915) signed into law

in 2014. “I am very proud to have helped continue efforts to bring accurate and appropriate education to students across California. I am particularly pleased that this budget allocation includes implementation of Armenian Genocide curriculum standards. Historical accounts of the Armenian Genocide are a tragic and important part of world history that continues to face denial and organized opposition. To have it taught in our schools is appropriate and critical,” commented Portantino. Senator Portantino Chairs the Senate Budget Subcommittee on Education, which voted Wednesday on Portantino’s proposal to provide $16 million in one-time Proposition 98 funds to support the implementation of the History-Social Science curriculum framework adopted by the State Board of Education. This important allocation will be used for regional trainings and professional development available for teachers, administrators and paraprofessionals and the development of an online repository of resources available to support instruction.

Armenian nationals are among those arrested in US immigration raid

US Federal immigration agents arrested 188 people, including Armenian citizens, in Los Angeles. According to the police, the criminals, living in the country illegally, were arrested during a five-day raid, Los Angeles Times reported. The majority, 146 people, are from Mexico. Others are nationals of El Salvador, Armenia, Honduras, Thailand, Yugoslavia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Russia and the Philippines. Although arrests by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are up 35% nationwide since Trump took office, they remain relatively flat in Southern California as of earlier this month.

American Armenian Rose Float Association releases 2018 float design Los Angeles, May 24, 2017 – The American Armenian Rose Float Association (AARFA) has released the design for the next Armenian rose float, which will take part in the 129th Pasadena Tournament of Roses, on January 1, 2018. This will be the Armenian rose float’s fourth consecutive participation in the world-renowned tournament. Carrying the theme “Armenian Roots,” the new Armenian rose float will be dedicated to Armenian mothers, daughters, sisters, and grandmothers, as individuals who are the foundation of acts of kindness that enrich the lives of others; who are a source of inspiration, hope, joy, and optimism; and whose unconditional love contributes to the greatness of their communities and nation. The theme of the Armenian rose float echoes the general theme of the 129th Pasadena Tournament of Roses, which “Making a Difference.” As described by Lance Tibbet, president of the 2017-2018 Tournament of Roses, “ The ‘Making a Difference’ theme is a way to honor and celebrate all of the people in our communities who, quietly and without desire for reward or recognition, act in selfless, generous, and kind ways to aid or benefit others.” The design of the new Armenian rose float was conceived by AARFA Board member Johnny Kanounji. The centerpiece consists of the bust of a young woman dressed in traditional Armenian garments and headgear and tending a young pomegranate tree. The elements in the back and front of the imposing centerpiece comprise a colorful pastiche of Armenian motifs, including Armenian carpets and pomegranates. While some of the patterns of the carpets are nods to ancient Armenian architecture and heraldry, their background colors are also rich in symbology. The green, for instance, symbolizes hope, renewal, life, and spring; and red symbolizes beauty, wealth, courage, joy, and faith. On New Year’s Day, 2018, the Pasadena Tournament of Roses will be seen by about 700,000 spectators in Pasadena and a global audience in 245 countries and territories. As in previous years, some 600 community volunteers will work on the floral assembly of the 2018 Armenian rose float. Given the considerable cost of materials and construction of the float, the AARFA is appealing for generous grassroots community support. Tax-deductible donations can be made online at www.aarfa.org or sent to the following address: American Armenian Rose Float Association, P.O. Box 60005, Pasadena, CA 91116.

Spend a Summer’s Evening Celebrating 50 years of Excellence in Education By Jennifer Chelebi The annual HMADS Gala Dinner Dance, taking place on June 3rd, 2017, continues to be a staple of the social season in the Armenian community. With its gently contoured greens and sparkling ponds, the North Hills Country Club in Manhasset, New York, will once again be the backdrop for an evening of dining and dancing in support of a most worthwhile cause…the future of Armenian culture and heritage. Easily accessible, North Hills will provide the idyllic setting for an elegant affair as HMADS celebrates its golden anniversary. While guests dine on lavish food and enjoy an exciting raffle, the music of Arthur Apkarian and Armenia Band of Montreal promises to provide an unforgettable evening of entertainment. Born in Beirut, Lebanon, Apkarian arrived in Canada at a young age. Raised by a family of well-respected musicians, his talents were quickly discovered as he grew to be one of the most sought-after entertainer whose reputation goes beyond the boundaries of the Armenian community. Apkarian developed a unique performance style and his selections in Armenian and Continental music is unmatched in the Armenian community both in Canada and USA.” The Friends of HMADS committee is truly blessed to have Mrs. Mary Haroutun-

TURKEY’S president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, spent the early part of this year repeatedly insulting his NATO allies, partly with the aim of stimulating nationalist sentiment at home in order to win a constitutional referendum giving him nearly autocratic powers. He won that referendum in April, and has since been trying to repair his damaged ties with the West. But as the NATO summit in Brussels on May 25th showed, the charm offensive is not going very well. At the summit, Emmanuel Macron, France's newly elected president, pressed Mr Erdogan to release a French photographer held for more than two weeks in a Turkish deportation centre. Germany's Angela Merkel, whose government Mr Erdogan accused of Nazi practices in the run-up to the referendum, complained to him about the arrest of a German reporter three months ago. Mrs Merkel also insisted that Turkey allow German MPs to visit Incirlik airbase, where 250 of her country's troops are stationed. (Turkey has refused to do so since the Bundestag passed a resolution recognising the Ottoman massacres of Armenians during the first world war as genocide.) Mrs Merkel threatened to withdraw the German forces if the block is not lifted. Turkish hopes for chummy relations with America’s new administration have been disappointed, too. Donald Trump, who seems to get along well with autocratic rulers, was the only Western leader to congratulate Mr Erdogan on his referendum victory, and the Turkish president planned to bond further during a trip to Washington, DC on May 16th. Instead the visit produced a public-relations disaster: Turkish guards were caught on camera beating Kurdish and Armenian demonstrators in front of their embassy, as a stony-faced Mr Erdogan looked on. America’s State Department summoned the Turkish ambassador, and a group of congressmen demanded that those responsible for the thuggery be prosecuted. Brazenly, the Turkish embassy blamed Washington’s police force for failing to take “appropriate measures” against the protesters, who it claimed had “aggressively provoked” the Turks. Even more absurdly, the foreign-affairs ministry in Ankara summoned America's ambassador on May 22nd to treat him to a tongue-lashing and a lecture on crowd control. Mr Erdogan had wanted to convince Mr Trump to stop outsourcing the ground war against Islamic State (IS) in Syria to a Kurdish militia which Ankara considers a terrorist group. Less than a week before his arrival, Mr Trump torpedoed that idea by approving a plan

to arm the militia, known as the YPG, with machine guns and armoured vehicles. In the end, Mr Erdogan came away with assurances that America would continue to back Turkey’s offensives against the same Kurdish insurgents elsewhere, in Turkey and northern Iraq. But a fresh confrontation over the YPG may be looming. Turkey has already bombed the group’s positions in Syria. If attacked by the insurgents, “we will exercise our rights under the rules of engagement without asking anyone,” said Mr Erdogan after his meeting with Mr Trump. For the Americans, the priority is to help the YPG and other forces to conquer Raqqa, IS’s self-proclaimed capital and the biggest Syrian city still under its control. “America wants Turkey to take the pressure off the YPG during the campaign against Raqqa,” says Saban Kardas, an analyst in Ankara. “We will not play that game.” Military experts say that Turkey may take advantage of the Raqqa offensive, which has drawn away many of the YPG’s forces, to stage an incursion against the group’s strongholds in Syria’s north. Such a move would lead to another diplomatic crisis between Turkey and America, if not a direct military confrontation. Mr Erdogan has another bone to pick with America. For months, he has called on Mr Trump to deport Fethullah Gulen, a Pennsylvania-based cleric suspected of masterminding the attempted coup against Turkey’s government last July. The Turks once hoped that Mr Trump would be more obliging on this count than Barack Obama had been. Indeed, Mr Trump’s former national security adviser, Mike Flynn, and his lobbying firm were being paid during the presidential campaign to press for the interests of the Turkish government. According to a former director of the CIA, James Woolsey, members of Mr Flynn's firm spoke to Turkish officials at the time about kidnapping Mr Gulen and packing him off to Ankara. Mr Flynn strongly denies having done so. But he is now out of the White House, and none of Mr Trump’s new advisers seem as understanding of Turkey’s concerns. In America, as in Europe, Turkey is starting to run out of friends.

Afeyan: My grandfather and his brother were saved by Germans during Armenian Genocide

ian and Mr. Berj Haroutunian as Honorary Booklet Co-Chairs of the 50th anniversary Gala Dinner Dance. HMADS always has a very special place in their hearts and thanks to their leadership and generosity this milestone celebration will turn into a success. The festivities will begin at 7:30 p.m. with a bountiful cocktail hour, followed by a delicious multi-course dinner served at 9 p.m.

YEREVAN. - We have not yet expressed our full gratitude to the strangers who saved Armenians during the Genocide. CEO of Flagship Pioneering, entrepreneur Noubar Afeyan, who is also the cofounder of Aurora humanitarian initiative, said the aforementioned, speaking at the event entitled “Legacy of Komitas”held in Komitas Museum of Yerevan on Sunday. In Afeyan’s words, during the Armenian Genocide his grandfather and his brother were saved by Germans. “My grandfather and his brother were famous businessmen, who represented the German bank in Istanbul. During the Genocide, they were deported form the city along with others. They reached a station,

which was under the control of Germans. My grandfather was a blue-eyed man and spoke German, that is why the German officers took him to their rows and thereby saved,” Afeyan said. The co-founder of Aurora humanitarian initiative also noted that he learnt about his family story from a Bulgarian periodical, which published about the Germans, who saved Afeyans. Following Afeyan’s speech, her daughter took to the stage and performed one of the works by Komitas. The event was attended by German Ambassador to Armenia, representatives of Bosch Foundation and other foreign guests. By the end of the event, the guests will tour the museum.
