Facing afuturewith Huntington’s Disease
Howthis courageous mother mappedout herlife
BYJODIBRYANTWhen Kate Keytestedpositive forHuntington’sDisease, aged 23,she fast-tracked life by marrying herlong-time partner, honeymooning, purchasing ahouse andhaving twokidsbythe ageof 30.
Butfirst,shehadtoensureshewasn’t passingdownthegenetoherown kids.Huntington’sDisease(HD)isa hereditaryneurodegenerativedisorder whicheachchildofanaffectedparenthasa50 percentchanceofdeveloping.
Havingwatchedhermotherendurethe cripplingsymptoms,shewantedtopreparefor herfuturesotookthetestassoonasshecould.
“Goingintotesting,Iwas50/50intermsof howIfelt,Iwasn’tleaningtoeitherway,”she reveals.“Iwasupsetbutalsorelievedbecause I’mthesortofpersonthatneedstoknow.It wasn’ttheresultIwouldhavewantedbutit meansIcanmakeaplan.”
Kate’smumBelindakeptherowndiagnosis onthedown-low.Withherfather,whohad passedawaywhenshewas16,havinghadthe disease,Belindatookthetestin1995assoon asitbecameavailable.However,sheputit asideas,withnoapparentsymptoms,which commonlydevelopduringone’s30s,wasable tocarryonwithlife.Itwasn’tuntilshewas45 thattheybegantomanifest.
“Inoticedmymumstartedchangingwhen Iwasaround16butshedidn’ttellmeshehad ituntilIwas22.ShewasquitesecretiveandI thinkshewasjusttryingtoprotectusandalso alittlebitindenial,”explainsKate.
“Mum’ssymptomsstartedoffwithslurred speechandshewasalittlebitclumsyand emotionalbutitwasquiteeasytohidethat. She’salsoquiteeccentricsoitkindofwent alongsidethosesymptomsbut,astimewent onandotherpeoplestartedaskingifshe’dhad afewdrinks,Inoticedthatsomethingwasn’t quiteright.Iwasstartingtoputpressureonher, askingquestionsandthentheHuntington’s
Associationspokewithmumandencouraged hertotellmeandmybrother.Igottes Iwas23,”tellsKate,addingthatherbr optednottofindout.
WhileKatehasn’texperiencedsymptoms yet,watchinghermum’sdeclinehasgivenher insightintotheroadahead.
“It’sagradualprocessandnormallyonce youstart,thelifeexpectancyisabouttento15 nd ’sat15no She’s62.Itstart ff
ofco-ordinationandswallowingcanbecome difficult.Fromacognitivepointofview,it’smore moodswingsastimegoesonandshort-term memorygoesandthenit’snotbeingabletotalk somymumcanonlysayacoupleofwords.She canstillwalkabitbutismostlychairandbedbound.She’sverystubbornthough.
“Shecanstillrecogniseandsayournames butwecan’thaveaconversationandshe’ll zoneoutonusbutIthink,astimegoeson,she mightnotbeabletorememberus.”
o, whenIfoundout,itwasabitofawake-upcall howimportantitistomakethemostofwhatyou haveandensureIdidmostofthethingsIwanted to.But,insayingthat,Ican’treallyplanforthe futuresohaveplannedshort-termandhowI wantmylifetolook.”
KateandhusbandRob,also30,both wantedtwochildrensobegantheIVF procedurebeforetheyevenmarried.This involvedamorecomplexprocessthan usualwitha‘backgroundcheck’,sampling boththeirsandtheirparents’bloodfor Pre-ImplantationGeneticDiagnosis(PGD). Oneyearlater,theyhadthegreenlightto beginIVF,whichbeganaftersixmonths.This proceduretookanothersixmonths,whenit wasdiscoveredKatehadpolycysticovaries, possiblyneedingIVFanyhow.
TheprocedureinvolvedcollectingKate’seggs withRob’sspermonthesameday.Eighteen eggswerecollectedwitheightsurviving.The embryos(fertilisedeggs)weresenttoAustralia aspartofthePGDtesting.TwoturnedupHD, onewasinconclusiveandfiveweresuccessful andreturnedtoNewZealandfrozen.
“Itwasprettyhardwaiting,”admitsKate. “Weweretryingnottogetourhopesup.With IVF,therearesomanystageswherethingscan gowrong.Itwassucharollercoaster.Butitwas amazingaswewereexpectingnone!”
Shehadoneembryoimplanted,with abloodtestafortnightlatertocheckfor pregnancy.“Then,aftertheseven-weekscan, you’redischargedandyou’relikeeveryother pregnantwoman.Youfindamidwifeand everythinggoesasitshould,”explainsKate.
However,withIVFbabiesoftensmaller, herswasdeemeda“high-risk”pregnancy butJacksonwasbornahealthy3.9kg(8Ib6), followedbyLucythreeyearslaterata whopping4.6kg(10Ib1).
Katesaysitisareliefknowingherchildren –Jackson,4,andLucy,1,willgrowupwithout theHDgene.“Forus,itwaslike,ifwecan’t haveourchildrenlikethisthenwe’renotgoing tohaveany.

IfJacksonasks,thenwe’llte Huntington’sDiseasebutIdon’tthink themaboutmeuntilthey’reteenage havingsymptoms.Iwishmymumhad meearlier-notwhenIwaseight waslateteens-soIcouldhavea behaviourandbeenmoresupportive.Idon’t wantmykidstobeburdenedwiththefearfor theirmum’sfuture.”
Kate’smumwasanaccountantandfairly adventurouswhenyounger.“Shedida lotoftravellingandlivedinRomefora whilewithaboyfriendandwasfluentinItalian. HewouldspeaktoherinEnglishandshewould speaktohiminItalian.Shewasveryeccentric andfunny.Shelovedlaughingandwasmusical likeherdadandcouldplaythepianoreally wellsothatwasherthingtoremindherofhim. IrememberwalkinghomefromschoolandI couldhearthepianoplaying.”
Kate’sgrandmother,whohadnursedher husbandthroughHuntington’suntilhedied inhis40s,alsonursedherdaughter,moving Belindaintoherhomeforseveralyears.
“Theywerebothverystubbornandthey didn’twanttoburdenmeinanywaysogran tookitonherselfbutitwashardontheir relationship,”saysKate.“Formum,shehad allthesymptomsequal–bothcognitiveand physical–andshewouldbecomeaggressive whichwastaxingontheirrelationship.Itgotto thepointwheregrancouldn’tcopeanymore somummovedintoaresthomein2016,which salvagedtheirrelationshipandtheycould enjo he odbits.”
andKate’sgranpassedawaylastyear,aged90.
“Iwasn’tsurehowmumwouldrespondto mygranpassingawaybutwedecidedtotell heranywaybecause,ifshewasaware,she’d bewondering.Shehadabigcry,whichwas areallynicemomentformeandher,andwe sharedinthemoment,”saysKate,addingthat hermotherwenttothememorial.
“Wevisitherweeklywhenwecanbutit’s beenreallyhardwithCovidandthekidshave beensick.Becauseit’saresthome,they’ve beenverystrict.Wetrytovideocallherbut it’snotthesame.Shefindsitreallyconfusing andtriestokissthephone,andthenitgets upsettingbutshejustwantsustoknowthat shelovesusandthat’swhereshe’sprioritising herenergy.”
Intermsofherownfuture,Katetriesnot toletitgetherdown.“Wehaveplanned whatwecanbutmostlywhenIimaginemy future,Idon’treallyseeitgoingpast40.I’m notallowingmyselftothinkaboutittoomuch becauseIjustdon’tknowwhatstateI’mgoing tobein.Peopletalkabouttheirkidsgetting married,forexample,butIdon’tknowifI’m goingtobethere.Itrynottoletitgetmedown
orthepeoplearoundme.It’sacertaintybutI don’twanttospendtoomuchtimeandenergy worryingaboutthingsinthefuturebutIstill needtoprepare.”
ForRob,whohasbeenwithKatesincethey were19andhasgonethroughtheHDjourney withherfromthebeginning,itwasablessing theywereabletohavechildren.
“Ithelpstodistractusbutalsokeepsus goingandfeelingpositive,”saysKate.“Italso encouragesustodomoreandIthinkforhim, he’sjustarealisticandlogicalpersonsohejust takeseachdayasitcomesbutIthinkhefeels confidentthatwe’llbeok.He’sverysupportive andhisfamilyareamazing.RobisSamoanso hisfamilyisverybigandclose.SometimesI’ve feltselfishforhavingkidsbecauseIdon’twant themtohavetogothroughwhatI’vebeen throughwithmymum.Butknowingwe’vegot suchabiglovingfamilyhelps.”
SomethingelseKatestruggleswithisthe frozenembryos.“Itfeelsquiteunethicaland Ihadtodoabitofsoul-searchingtofigure outwhatIwantedtodo.TheoneswithHD werejustasimportantasthesetwo.Iknow thatIdon’twanttohaveanymorechildren andI’mnotsureifI’mreadyfordonating(the
remainingthreewhichKateandRobpayto keepfrozen)asthat’sawholeotherthing puttingthemupforadoption.Maybewe’ll plantatreeandhaveaceremonythanking them.Itdoesweighonmymindbutwehaven’t decidedwhattodoyet.”
Meanwhile,sincetickingoffherfirstbucket listchapter,Kateislookingtothenextstage whichinvolvestravellingwiththekidstomeet familyoverseas.
“I’dreallyliketotakethekidstotheUKto meetmyfamilythereandRobandIwouldlike tospendayearlivinginSamoatochallenge ourselvesabit.Wefeellikeitwouldbegoodfor usandthekidstostripthingsbackandslow downabit.Ifeellikethelastnineyearshave justbeenallgo.
“Asmuchasyoutrytobepositive,there isthisweightonmyshouldersbutItrynot tothinkaboutittoomuch.Iwon’tbearound aslongasIcanforthekidsbutwemakethe mostofthistimewehavetogether,thoughI keephopingforapreventativeorprolonging treatmentinthemeantime.”

AgroupofhandyresidentsfromJane ManderRetirementVillagehaverallied resourcestohelpouttheirlocalbranchof HabitatforHumanity.
PhilipParkes,theunofficialleaderofthe JaneManderMen’sShed,realisedheand hisfellowMen’sShedmatescouldmakea bigdifferencetothecharity’sever-growing workload.
WithMen’sShedmemberTonyMorris alreadyheadingdowntovolunteeratHabitat onedayaweek,theideawasforhimtobring backtothevillageanyitemsthatneededwork.
“Thiswasnecessaryastheworkshopat JaneManderhasalittlemoreroomthanthe Habitatonetoworkonprojects,”Philipsaid.
Sincethenthegrouphashelpedtofixup furnitureinneedofrepairtobeon-sold.However, recentlytheyhadamoreunusualrequest.
“Thisiswhenitbecameexciting,”said Philip.“Theyhadalargenumberofwoodentoy breakdowntrucksandtruckandtrailercombos giftedtotheminseparatepiecesbuttheydidn’t havethetimetoputthemalltogether,sowe
saidwecouldhelpbygluingthemorscrewing themall.”
Oncecompleted,thetoyvehiclescouldbe soldintheHabitatforHumanityshopwiththe proceedsallgoingtowardstheirpurposeof buildingorimprovingpeople’shomes.
HabitatforHumanityTaiTokerauoperations
managerCarinaDickson,saidtheorganisation wasthankfulandappreciativeofthesupport fromtheJaneManderMen’sShed.
“Thetimetheyputin,alongwiththe facilitiesandskillstheyoffer,enablea broaderrangeofworkthanourReStore wouldbeabletomanagealone.Their generousassistancewiththisworkformsa valuablecontributiontotheongoingworkof Habitatinourregion.”
GaryHamilton,oneofthenewermembersof theworkshopteam,andGeoffPriestley,aformer oilrefineryoperator,saidtheworkgavethemen agreatpurpose,aswellasgoodcompanyand thechancetopickupsomenewskills.
“That’soneofthewonderfulthingscoming intothevillage,youcanjoininanddothings andfeellikeyou’renotjustsittingaround,” Garysaid.
“Thevillagekitchenteamputonabitof foodforusonaWednesdayandwe’llhaveabit ofayarn,soit’slikeafriendshipclubtoo.”
Theaddedbenefitofthisprojectwasthe extraexperiencetheyallgained.Philip,aretired biologyteacher,sayshiswoodworkskillsareall self-taught,whileGary,whousedtoworkasa salesrepsellingstockfeedtofarmers,ismoreof anoviceonthewoodworkfront.
“Itwasreallyworthwhile,asallfour membershavegainedexperienceandskills thatwouldnothavearisenotherwise,”said Philip.
Otherprojectstheyhaveonthegoinclude retiredelectricianJohnLangford’sstunning occasionaltablesandsomeslightlymore straightforwardwoodenbirdfeederswhichsell eitheratthevillagemarketoronTradeMe.
Withthebirdfeederssellingfor$35each ortwofor$60,theproceedsmakeagreat contributiontotheRymancharity,Philipsaid.
“Theshophasgiven$700toProstateNZso far!”
Nextonthelistofitemstotrymakingis wētāhotels,tohelpimprovebiodiversityin thearea.
Muchofthewoodusedtomaketheitemsis donated,sothemenhavebecomequiteadept atspottingpotentialsourcesofwoodtoo.
