ADVENTURING
with
FOUR LEGS "DOGVERLANDING" BY RANGER
Hi, my name is Ranger and I’m an overlanding dog. My kind used to be called Jeep dogs, but the Tacoma guys got kinda bent about that so here we are. Us overlandy dogs are the adventurous types, we love to smell new stuff, but we also have a clear understanding that we need to stay away from guys with pokey fur or rattly butts. We love getting dirty and can also sleep soundly in a rig that’s bouncing along two track in the middle of nowhere. I’m twelve months old and have peed in ten states so far. My rig of choice is a Jeep Gladiator, I like this one because I can stretch out and really own the back seat. My human picked it up last year right before we went to Overland Expo Mountain West and until recently I was the only one to use that back seat. My nose tells me a mid 40’s adult male that ate a bacon burger has since been in my spot and I’m not too happy about it.
"I’M TWELVE MONTHS OLD AND HAVE PEED IN TEN STATES SO FAR."
We recently built a bug out trailer, well, the big human built it, but I laid in my bed in the garage and watched him, so I kinda think it’s a “we." This freed up space in the truck for me to really stretch out and gave him more room to bring extra cookies and toys. I think it’s a solid plan on his part. Where do I sleep? The tent of course, I’m not an animal. The human gives me a boost and I snuggle up at the back of the tent until he starts snoring then I lay on top of him. It’s pretty comfortable, although I generally prefer to have my own pillows at home. I also like listening to the sounds of nature and during the last trip got to chat with some distant coyote cousins that were having some sort of party. Camping really connects a dog to her inner wild self.
I have some really important jobs, too. I lick my human’s ear when we’ve been driving for too long and remind him how much we like finding places to relax and throw frisbees. I also keep an eye out for invading German Shepards. Those guys are sketchy and will roll into your camp and steal your cookies. I also carry all my own stuff in my backpack, try and have your lapdog do that move.
"CAMPING REALLY CONNECTS A DOG TO HER INNER WILD SELF." I’ve done two Overland Expos now and I really like them. Lots of other dogs to talk to and the booths always have water for me to drink. Flagstaff was my favorite, big shout out to the guys at Kenda for having cookies in their booth. Here’s a tip, if you want my human’s attention, I’m happy to drag him to you and keep him at your booth. You just need to supply a cool beverage and some cookies. I’ll happily wait while you chat about composting toilets and multi color tool rolls.
What’s next? I’m told the UP is nice this time of year and we’re apparently building a diesel heater so we can extend our camping season. I’m not sure why we need that, but I guess the humans get cold pretty easy. We’re in Northern Minnesota in July and some place called Tigerton in August. If you see me out there say hello, I like pets and my butt scratched and of course cookies, not those little poodle kind, but the big dog kind. See you on the trail. ~Ranger

CRAWL 4 THE CURE by U.P. Jeeping If you're not into rock crawling and off road parks, chances are you haven't heard about Crawl 4 the Cure. Every year since 2005, with the exception of 2020 being cancelled due to COVID, this event has taken place at the Iron Range Off Highway Vehicle Recreation Area in Gilbert, MN. The organizers of this event work with the Upper Midwest Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to raise money to improve the quality of life for people affected by MS in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and several counties in western Wisconsin and Nebraska, and also raises funds for critical MS research. So not only is money going to help people living with MS, it's also going towards research to find cures for the disease and even ways to prevent it altogether. Since 2005 Crawl 4 the Cure has raised over $1,250,000.
CRAWL
This year marked my 8th year going to Crawl 4 the Cure with a group of friends from MI. The event requires you to sign up and pay a small registration fee, and after you make reservations for camping you're all set. But they also highly encourage you to join their online fundraising program, the more money you donate the more chances you get to win great prizes donated by businesses around the Midwest. This year for every $50 you donated, including the $50 registration fee, you received one additional raffle ticket. Every year they also raffle off a custom built Jeep for $10 a ticket, this year's Jeep was a hemi swapped 2 door JK. The chances are pretty good that you will walk away winning something. As of writing this article I don't have the exact donation totals for this year's event, but they kept a rough running total and at the end of the weekend they raised approximately $120,000!
The Iron Range OHV area is roughly 36 miles of trails on 900 acres of old iron ore tailing piles. There are trails for all skill levels from easy all the way to the hardest in the Midwest. There are also specific trails for off highway motorcycles, ATVs, and side by sides. The park is run by the MN Department of Natural Resources and requires a trail sticker, which can be purchased at the gate. When you join the event they give you the option to sign up for guided trail rides. The guides are there to help spot you along the trail and assist you in a safe successful recovery if you find yourself stuck. Or if you would rather explore with your own group that's an option as well. Besides the park you are right in the middle of beautiful Northern MN. There are miles of ORV trails to explore, mine tours, small town shopping, restaurants, lakes, and parks. Check out the links below for more information on this great event!

PET CARE ON THE ROAD
10 WAYS FOR YOUR ADVENTURE PUP TO THRIVE IN THE OUTDOORS By Christina Goodwin
”One way to get the most out of life, is to look upon it as an adventure” – William Feather To be able to confidently bring your furry pals on a road trip or camping adventure is one of the simple joys of life. Except it may not be so simple. Christina Goodwin and her husband have been traveling with their dog, Chibbs, and she has some advice for making things easier on you and your good doggo. Follow Christina, Nate & Chibbs on Instagram @GoGoGoodwins
Remain as consistent as possible to your home schedule for feeding, meds and bedtime. Create a safe space for your canine to retreat when traveling with groups. We use a ChuckIt! travel pillow bed set up in our awning room. Night time safety with your dog is paramount. Use light up collars or leads to keep track of your pet after dark
Do your research before you leave. Understand regulations and accessibility of where your canine can and cannot go. This will help avoid on the fly decisions that might leave your pet in a warm or cold car waiting for your return. Understand symptoms and treatment for canine hypothermia and heat stroke.
Keep a stocked and up to date K-9 first aid kit in your rig or on your Co-sleep with your canine or have animal and know how to use it. We use them stowed in a vehicle at night to MyMedic and Adventure Medical kits keep them safe from foraging wildlife along with the Canine Field Medicine and rapid changing weather conditions guide. When spending time in a campground use a permanent marker to write your site number on a blank dog tag and attach it to your pet’s collar.

Keep your companion pest free. This will prevent an additional need for first aid care for hot spots and abrasions. Keep flea and tick treatments current. We use Wondercide cedarwood flea and tick spray as well as a mosquito spray depending the time of year. In addition, give an option for your pet to stay up off the ground using beds, chairs or tents. STAY HYDRATED! Pay attention to how often your dog is going to the bathroom. If you feel thirsty, they probably feel it too.

WHITE FISH BAY - HIGH ROCK BAY - PART ONE 14 rigs set out to go from one side of Michigan's UP to the other on a mission to benefit the Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition
EXPEDITION SERIES 2022 Words by Patrick McKenney, Photos by Joshua Colegrove The Expedition Series is a succession of yearly multi-day trips to extend beyond the "Overlanding Weekend," challenging participants to work as a team, traveling from an origination point to a destination. Trips in the Expedition Series are be 5+ nights in duration, cover several hundred miles at a minimum and include multiple days and nights being "off grid." Each year, we'll be teaming up with a different organization to help promote, awareness and funds for the organization. For 2022 we're thrilled to be partnering with Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition (KORC.) -ORBIS OVERLANDING WEBSITE
"After our initial rally point meeting we rolled out on our first section of road as a group, and headed up to Whitefish Point, to hang out at the lighthouse there, and get to know our fellow expedition members."
"Day 2 we headed to Crisp Point Lighthouse, which is one of my favorite places. It had been dry for a while, so the dust towards the back of the group was pretty bad. Chase lights are very helpful in such a situation. We continued on our trek west, passing trough the area of the Duck Lake forest fire back in 2012, and the mouth of the Two Hearted River, and then on a bit further to camp the second night. "
Watch for more coverage of the Orbis Expedition Series in future editions of Northology Adventures.
"This is just a glimpse into our week-long expedition. Here is just a brief look at our trip."

OVERLANDING WITH DOGS
We first met Goose at Big Iron Overland Rally, sitting patiently in the basket of Cara McClellan's ebike. We could not help but fall in love. We caught up with Goose and asked him a few questions about his life so far on the road.
a 10 day camping trip in Colorado, and a Lady Overlander Radio Ladies Only Retreat that mom snuck me in to. It was my favorite because all the ladies loved me. I even kayaked here for the first time!
PLEASE TELL US YOUR NAME, AGE AND WHAT BREED OF DOG YOU ARE. My name is Goose Martin McClellan. I was born 03-01-2022, and I’m the coolest French Bulldog you’ll ever meet.
TELL US ABOUT MOM AND DAD, WHAT ARE THEIR NAMES AND WHAT DO THEY DO FOR A LIVING. My mom is my best friend. She tells me I’m her wingman. Her name is Cara. Dad’s name is Matt. He’s ok. Sometimes. Mom works in the pharmacy when she’s not helping Dad become famous on YouTube. Mom also has a podcast.
HOW MANY STATES HAVE YOU BEEN TO? WHAT OVERLAND EVENTS HAVE YOU BEEN TO AND WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE AND WHY? Well since mom takes me everywhere, I’ve been to 9 states!! Oregon, Kansas, Missouri, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Oklahoma, and my home state—Arkansas. I’ve been to Overland Expo PNW,
SINCE MOM TAKES ME EVERYWHERE, I’VE BEEN TO 9 STATES!!
DO YOU TELL YOUR DOG FRIENDS THAT YOU ARE GOING OVERLANDING OR FANCY CAR CAMPING? DOES DAD CORRECT YOU? I prefer being called a “Rocklander”! A little overlanding with rock crawling! I never listen to what dad says.
HAVE YOU BEEN ON MOM’S PODCAST OR DAD’S YOUTUBE VIDEOS? DO PEOPLE RECOGNIZE YOU? DO YOU LIKE THAT? Mom hasn’t had me on the show yet, but she’s planning a special one for other cool pups and their owners. You can catch me there. I’ve been on a couple of Dad’s YouTube videos. I pretty much make the views for him. People recognize me alot!! They yell “Gooseeeee”. It makes me so happy especially when they let me lick their face.
WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING THING ABOUT TRAVEL FOR YOU?
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT CAMPING?
DO YOU LIKE IT WHEN MOM GOES ON OFFROAD TRAILS? DO YOU HAVE A DOGGY SEAT BELT? WHICH IS MORE FUN, SCOOTER OR JEEP RIDES?
All. The. Sticks. There are so many to be discovered and so little time. Oh and No No’s. I love playing with those. Mom calls them pinecones to dad…but to me she keeps saying No No….Weird.
Nothing really. I pretty much snooze and play with the toys mom has in my car seat. I can make it to about a half tank in mom’s Jeep before I have to go potty. She calls it a win win.
I love off roading. I’ve been on several level 4 trails at our local off-road park and just recently did the Holy Cross trail in Colorado. It’s rated at a level 7-9 on the Jeep Badge of Honor system and took us 8 hours to complete!! It was a little scary when mom hit her rock rails hard. Still getting used to that part. I ride bucked in a car seat and can see out my side window. But mostly I keep my eyes on mom. She makes me feel safe.
WHAT ARE THE DOGGY SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS LIKE?
Right beside my mom. Sorry dad.. HAVE YOU PEED ON ANY EXOTIC PLANTS, LIKE A CACTUS? WHO PICKS UP THE POOP, MATT OR CARA?
I don’t know that I’ve peed on any but I try to eat them all. Does that count? Both mom and dad pick it up! Leave no trace man. ARE YOU AFRAID OF ANYTHING? Losing sight of mom kinda makes me anxious.
ARE YOU TALL ENOUGH TO STICK YOUR HEAD OUT THE CAR WINDOW? My legs are solid cause I work out. But not quite long enough. Dynamite comes in small packages though. So watch out.
WHAT ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT WHEN YOU ARE DREAMING AND MAKING THOSE CUTE NOISES WHILE RUNNING IN YOUR SLEEP? Running through fields of wildflowers with mom while she tells me what a good boy I am. And those cute noises are me licking the pup cones I get as treats.

nicholas koch describes his first overland basecamp event experience “Okay, everything will be fine,” I say to myself as I am driving up to Copper Harbor. Cindy Pope, Mrs. Northology herself, said it would be a fun time. But what will it be like? How will the people be? What if this, what if that, constantly scroll through my anxiety riddled mind. I arrive in the driveway of Trails End Campground, check in and get told where I need to go. I find a decent parking spot and set out to find Cindy because at this point, she is the only one I know. I find her and she says hello and starts introducing me to a few of the many people that I will meet this weekend at KOAR 2021. This all began a few years prior when I bumped into Cindy at Canoecopia. We got to talking and she asked if I knew what overlanding was. She told me it was a group of fun loving, crazy people that like to spend time in the outdoors driving trails and camping. At first, I had little interest as I prefer the “quiet” outdoor activities. But after awhile I said, “so its like backpacking with a vehicle, guess I will give it a try." That was back in 2018. Oh how I wish I had found the time to get more involved sooner.
That first night while getting ready to sleep in the back of my truck I was thinking about all the dogs…and people that I got to meet. This event is going to be fun. The next morning I awoke to vehicles driving out to the first event (shout out to whomever honked while leaving). I quickly climbed out the back and hopped in the driver seat and set out to meet up at the KORC tent in Copper Harbor at The Mariner. After I decided which location to go to do the cleanup at (the one with the best swimming) I followed the group out to Keystone Bay. It took quite awhile to get out there because we stopped to pick up any trash we saw along the way. Once there our group began to clean up the area. I took to the water. I was surprised at the amount of fishing line and trash that I found in the water- none. After my short 20 minute invigorating waterborne trash recovery effort, I hit the shoreline. Our group found quite a bit of trash while out there. I helped dig through a fire pit and an area where the tree roots had begun to cover up old trash. We all found quite a bit. I even found a really old can, that is now a souvenir of mine. Even though it wasn’t a competition,
airing up, we took that time to gather the hundreds of there while airing down. Told you we would be back for you, trash.
I think the group I went out with won. However, the real winners are the people that get to go out to these three locations that we cleaned up, and enjoy a trash free experience. After enjoying some great food and beverages from, The Mariner, we set off on our next adventure for a trail ride, with a little detour to The Jampot, to see some monks about some jam. Other than jam I got a big (understatement) muffin from there as well. The line is well worth the wait and everyone in our group got all the jams and baked goods they wanted. After driving a little further down the road we pulled off and got prepared to drive some trails. We aired down and noticed a bunch of trash in the location. Don’t worry trash, we will be back for you. The trail was a fun experience on the way out. Someone got high centered and upon walking the trail further up, realized we should use an alternate route. This alternate route lead to a beautiful overlook. However there was a little hiking involved and I was glad to see I was not the only one sucking wind as we hiked our way up. The hike was worth the view. So spectacular and beautiful to gaze out across the Keweenaw Peninsula and see Lake Superior. What goes up must come down, the slick, muddy foot path. After stumbling and fumbling our way down we made it back to our vehicles. On the way out we had to cross the deep ditch that we crossed on the way in. Everything was going great until I hit something that sounded expensive, under my vehicle. Nothing loose or broken upon visual inspection, so onward we went, eventually making it back to the start of the trail. While
After arriving back at the campground, some cooked dinner, some went to what remaining courses were ongoing and others hit the keg, while awaiting the drawing to start. Many great prizes were given out, which made many people happy and others happy for them. There was also a memorial speech for Doug Borre. I never met the individual, but with the great reverence of which he was spoken about, I know he had to be a great guy. After stopping by the keg myself, I made my loop through all the vendors that were there. Everything was going well until a man named Blake from Dometic, convinced me to purchase a fridge. No complaints with that though. I also got to test out my, RSI Smartcap. By test I mean, I learned it makes a great platform for kids to climb up on and get a better view of what is going on. They seemed to be having fun until I told them I had to drive elsewhere because the bonfire was about to start. The bonfire was a great time. Everyone gathered around its over abundance of warmth, having great conversations well into the night. Stories from the past two days, stories from previous adventures, people from all walks of life gathered and just enjoying the moment. If you are anxious or worried about attending your first overlanding event I say, go for it. I have already got my tickets for next years KOAR, and I have attended multiple events since with this great group of people. Oh, I cannot believe I almost forgot… the Moore Expo, but that story is for another time.

overlanding with a
rescue dog MoLeisureXventures
Everyone knows, a dog is a man’s best friend. I like to say a rescue dog is an overlander’s best friend. When you think about it, a rescue and an overlander are both looking for the same thing. They want be free! Whether it’s freedom from a kennel or a leash, or freedom from a job or other societal norms. When you take both a rescue and an overlander outside, deep into nature, that is when they are both the happiest. Since we started our trip in November 2019, we’ve talked about having a furry companion join us on our travels and adventures across the US. So on January 6, 2021, we adopted Ella, then 2 years old, from the Collin County Animal Rescue in McKinney, TX. After visiting the shelter, I wish I could’ve adopted all of the animals in there.
PSA: If you’re looking to add a furry friend to your family, please consider adopting. There are so many amazing animals living in a confined space in a shelter that would love to have freedom in loving homes #adoptdontshop. When we first met Ella, she was so timid, understandably as she was just given back that same day and we were her third family. We were going to have to take it slow with her. It’s like meeting someone for the first time, we didn’t know her likes/dislikes, we didn’t know her triggers, we didn’t even know if she liked us. It was a learning process on both ends. I think it took about 5 months until she finally realized that she was with her furever family. We had a few hiccups in the beginning, but once she started coming out of her shell she’s been a completely different dog. She’s adapted to living on the road so well. We’ve introduced her to so many things that a normal dog living in a home would never see. She’s been to a few

National Parks with us and became a Bark Ranger. She loves going on car rides, on and off road. She gets excited when we set up camp and loves snuggling in our sleeping bag. She knows the Xterra will always be her home and safe space. But her absolute favorite thing to do is to run in the wild. She loves running in grass, sand, the woods, on rocks, with new friends and if necessary, she'll settle for pavement too. That’s one thing that I’m glad we were able to give Ella. The freedom to run wherever, whenever she wants. The freedom of being an overlander. Follow the adventures of Delia, Enoch & Ella at MoLeisureXventures.com

We adventure in our 2020 Toyota Tacoma as much as we can when we are not working our full time jobs. What draws you to the outdoors? The freedom and beauty to see the world and what it has to offer. Their are so many things to see hidden away. "We have enjoyed taking multiple friends camping and hiking showing them things they probably would have never seen with out us pushing them to join us on an adventure." northwoods_overland_adventures

"We strive to be a light on the path for people to find the upper Midwest adventure community."
ABOUT NATE & CHRISTINA We a married couple in our mid 30s trying to travel as far and wide as we can so our cattle dog rescue Mr Chibbs can live his very best life. We had the opportunity to take a small convoy of friends into the Northwoods for some forest road fun. It was so rewarding watching each rig, whos drivers have never been off pavement, conquer each obstacle. Trailside lunch watching the kids and dogs running through the downed trees was so fulfilling. We love sharing our passion with all those we meet. We also love pushing our city friends out of their comfort zone for the great pin stripping of the north. gogogoodwins
"We are drawn to the silent beauty of forest and mountain scapes broken only by the distant chaos of a waterfall or coastlines." We love to bring the 'average weekender and pet parent' story to people who aren't sure if they can really get out there. We are relatively new to upper midwest travel, but we love to bring our audience along on the adventure of seeing most of these treasured spots through fresh eyes.

ABOUT THIS FEATURE
Rustic Retreat Reviews We don't always camp and we definitely have standards when it comes to non-camp lodging. Chain hotels? No. Haunted houses? No. Never-remodeled-orupgraded-in-60-years? No. We do love the rustic, the quirky, the historic, the off-the-beaten-path stays. In this monthly feature we plan to review some of the places we have stayed and give you an honest opinion. We are compiling a listing of our favorite Hipcamps, Air bnbs, cabins, lodges, yurts, whatever- if its fun, fresh or funky, we will let you know. If you are an establishment owner, please reach out and let us know about your place, we want to find the unique and share it with other adventurous travelers! If you are a traveler who wishes to submit review, please email us immediately!
ROCKFORD, IL
Rockford Ski Club "The Ski Club has 33 acres of prairie, forest, garden, and field. Beautiful forests with deer, turkey, and fox. The property leads to the Kishwaukee River where people can kayak or canoe. There is a view of the river valley from the camping field. The Ski Club has been a cooperative club for decades and members still ski and sled here."
"The Club is easy to access off of Interstate 39. There is a gas station a half mile away and the city of Rockford is only a 10-15 minute drive away. People can camp in tents, car/vans, campers, or RVs in the mowed grass area. There is a well with limited amounts of water that is not drinkable but can be used to wash. There is electricity for phones, lights, games, etc. but will not power RVs." Rockford Ski Club on Hipcamp
