WINTER HAMMOCK CAMPING
BY JAMES WINSKI
As the temperatures drop, the leaves burst into a magnificent painting. The flurry of changing colors from vibrant yellows to deep auburns. It's mother nature's last display of color till the spring. There is this time between autumn and spring that so many dislike called winter.
Winter sends the mercury plummeting deep into the single digits. It's also known for bringing on the winter blues. While so few people find winter to be a season to camp in, let alone camp in a minimal setup such as a hammock. It can be done and is often extremely rewarding. My name is James, with 5 years experience I'll do my best to give you a new perspective on the snowy season and some ways to overcome the challenges of winter camping in a hammock. Starting with the basics, the hammock itself is important as they are not one size fits all. Your height and weight will determine the length and size of the hammock you may need. I'm a very average 5' 10" with my average weight somewhere near 200lbs. I am currently using an Eno double nest hammock , at 9' 4" long and 6' 2" wide it gives me enough room to turn sideways and get a nice flat lay. It packs down into its own bag very nicely . The next question that comes up is "how do you stay warm all night? "
A challenge with staying warm even on summer night is we lose heat in two ways primarily, conduction and convection. Simply put convection is the cold air blowing above and below you bringing body temperature down , while conduction is when your are touching something physically cold. Our bodies radiate heat and we need to try and trap it all night.
When you lay down on a sleeping bag it's "R" value, or insulation rating, is significantly lower as you compress the insulating material. Try starting with a simple air pad to lay on. Either in your sleeping bag or under the sleeping bag. Both ways can achieve the desired result. I've used the $20 Amazon specials and they have done fairly well. There are also high quality foam filled, self inflating options as well. You should make sure it's wide enough to cover your body completely. There are some made with wing outs near where your arms would be. That extra coverage has helped as well. To keep the cold air from underneath you, an under quilt really is a must have. I've seen under quilts in several forms. Everything from a DIY version made from a sleeping bag to a far more expensive but high quality version that is super cold weather rated version, find what fits your needs and budget. The under quilt has drawstrings
"think of it as a second insulation layer to help keep Jack Frost from nipping at your backside."
to snug up to the bottom of the hammock. This aids in keep your body heat trapped near you, think of it as a second insulation layer to help keep Jack Frost from nipping at your backside.
Lastly these are a few tricks I've learned over the years of camping in cooler weather that apply to all primitive camping. Change into dry clothing just before bedtime, socks are the most important for me , if my feet get cold I will not sleep well. The Or course we can not talk about cold weather camping perspiration will draw body heat away from you without talking about sleeping bags. Something to throughout the night. Something to keep in mind also keep in mind most will say something like "zero is you can't take off clothing you don't have, so add an degree " that means it will keep you alive but may not extra layer to stay warm. If you get too hot at night, be comfortable at zero. I try to have a twenty degree peel off a layer. Another trick I learned is to eat just buffer, so if it's going to be 20 degrees out I prefer a before bed. I know it goes against the dietician's zero degree bag. Obviously this is subject to you and recommendation but your body will work to digest your sleeping habits and if you are "hot blooded" or that food at night and keep the oven burning longer. "cold blooded". Just like a warm drink will help bring up body temperature. Lastly a foot box is the area where your Next up is a cover of some sort, now it's not necessary feet are in the hammock. There are special designed but tarp of some sort will keep wind and potentially foot box covers. An inexpensive tip is I will use my snow off of you. Just like all gear you can go simple or heavy winter coat to zip it up over the end of the elaborate. A blue tarp from the hardware store will hammock where my feet are. It works the same and is work almost as well as an expensive hammock tarp set one less thing I need to bring. in an "A" frame. Another option that I have seen are built with wings at either end to close them in like the I hope you found some information here that will roof of your house. One thing to remember is to put prove useful. The important part is to have fun and the ends of the tarp opposite the direction of the wind enjoy the world we are surrounded by every day. . This will give you the best protection for your The hammock is just another way to sleep in the slumber above the snow. great outdoors.

Auroral Reflections! During the height of the storm, the sky was filled with curtains and pulses of light. A result of a combo-CME (coronal mass ejection) that struck the planet at the same time. The fast-moving solar wind created some of the most colorful Auroras seen in years.
@shelbydiamondstar on IG and FB May not be able to top this image of the Jeep! Curtains of lights take up the entire frame, even casting purple, pink, and green hues onto the Jeep's blue paint. This G3-level Geomagnetic event lasted all night! The Jeep sure earned its keep, as it took an 8-hr drive from Chicago to northern Wisconsin's Apostle Islands to clear the cloud cover!
"An aurora (plural: auroras or aurorae,) also known as the polar lights or aurora polaris, is a natural light display in Earth's sky, predominantly seen in high-latitude regions (around the Arctic and Antarctic). Auroras display dynamic patterns of brilliant lights that appear as curtains, rays, spirals or dynamic flickers covering the entire sky. Auroras are the result of disturbances in the magnetosphere caused by solar wind. These disturbances alter the trajectories of charged particles in the magnetospheric plasma. These particles, mainly electrons and protons, precipitate into the upper atmosphere (thermosphere/ exosphere). The resulting ionization and excitation of atmospheric constituents emit light of varying colour and complexity. The form of the aurora, occurring within bands around both polar regions, is also dependent on the amount of acceleration imparted to the precipitating particles." -Wikipedia
A kaleidoscope of color fills the sky as Earth's magnetic field buffets the solar wind and radiation. While beautiful, the Aurora serves as a reminder to the powerful forces of nature that keep us safe. As solar cycle 25 heats up, we can expect more events like this! PHOTO:@ShelbyDiamondstar
Why do I shoot the northern lights? Hard to say there is any one particular reason since it’s the total experience that makes chasing them so enjoyable. Long drives and cold temperatures are often part of the experience. With some luck, camping may be involved! Even on the nights they don’t show as expected it’s still relaxing to be out in the cool air staring at the stars. But when they do show it’s amazing. How and when they dance in the sky is completely unpredictable and no two nights are ever the same. Hour by hour or minute by minute they can change color, dance in different patterns and explode brilliantly or die off quickly. And the camera, thats the secret to seeing what is really going on. Its ability to see colors is not handicapped at night like the human eye is. But the camera alone can not replicate the entire experience of seeing them on your own. -Shawn Hamachek

Today I am going to Smith’s Crack. I am driving there now. Smith’s Crack is a deep fissure in the ground at a basalt lava field in the Snake River Plains. Located south of Boise, Idaho, Smith’s Crack is a relatively unknown adventure, if you are brave enough to try. Smith’s Crack is not a lava tube. Experts think that when the lava went through, it cooled, and then became brittle and cracked, creating the fissure. There are no trees around. I can see for miles. The road is not paved and is very bumpy and muddy. So now we are here. There is no parking lot and there are no signs. We searched for a few minutes and then found the entrance.
The entrance was a small hole between a bunch of rocks. It stinks in here. There is pigeon poop everywhere – on the rocks and on the walls. “Mommy, you can go first so you can get pooped on,” I said. She did not get pooped on, but she shooed the pigeons away. There are a lot of dead pigeons in here. I wonder if they hit their heads and died. All this tumbleweed blew in and it is hard to find the way down. I’m going to put my head lamp on now --It’s getting dark in here.
Here’s the first rope. There is a piece of wood wedged in the wall to step down on. “Mommy, you go first. Do I use the rope and step on the wood?” I asked. I stepped on the wood and jumped to the bottom. There are lots of rocks down here. We will have to crawl. It is very tight. Is this the birthing canal? I can’t see the bottom. Dad says Lily will have to go in her harness. Mommy goes first. Lily is coming down now. Daddy lowered her on the rope. I get to go after Lily. Now everybody is down. Next, we have to go through a small hole. Lily sees brown water at the bottom. It is very yucky and smells bad. Daddy almost got stuck. We are all out of the hole now. We are at a dead end. How are we going to get out of here? Daddy has to go straight up the wall. Daddy disappeared for a few minutes. Later, we saw a light from above and then the climbing rope was thrown down. Lily and I have to go in the harness to climb up. I am in the harness now and Daddy is pulling me up. It’s like 40 feet high! I’m up now. Next it is Lily’s turn. Lily is getting pulled up now. Lily cries, “Waaaa!” Lily and Mommy are up now, and I finally see the exit. We are out. Yay!
Shawn, Lisa, Lily, Evelyn
Evelyn, 9, lives in Wisconsin & spent a few weeks this fall going all over the west with her sister, Lily, mom Lisa & dad Shawn in their big ol' converted F550 shorty schoolbus.
We got back in the bus and headed a short way to camp at the top of two crater rings, each almost a mile across. We all had ice cream and lots of chocolate. I can’t wait to go on another adventure like this!

Business of Adventure INDUSTRY FIGURES WEIGH IN ON THE STATE OF THE ADVENTURE BUSNESS CLIMATE
THE QUESTIONS We wanted to know what challenges business are facing, what their outlook for 2022 is, and how customers can adjust expectations to weather this hopefully temporary hiccup in the supply chain.
WHO WE ASKED We have all seen the news stories about the ships stacked up at US ports, felt the pinch at the gas pump and seen the effects of chip shortages on new car prices. While this is in no way a scientific study, we opened up a survey to magazine supporters and others in the industry. We asked manufacturers, retailers, suppliers and vehicle build & modifications shops. We wanted to know how the businesses that your vehicle-assisted adventure traveler would normally be patronizing are affected. We wanted to hear what they had to say about how they are dealing with current challenges to better serve you.
"MOST UNDERSTAND THE ISSUES WE ARE FACING" Jerry L’Ecuyer, TemboTusk
Special thanks to our respondents Jerry L’Ecuyer, TemboTusk Darin Marquardt , Performance Off Road of Wisconsin Aaron Matkowski, Artemis Overland Hardware Joe Krelle, ChiTown 4x4 Jeremy Byington, New Holland Overland Hardware
WHICH SECTOR OF YOUR BUSINESS OR SPECIFIC PRODUCT CATEGORIES HAS BEEN IMPACTED BY ONGOING SHORTAGES AND OR SUPPLY ISSUES? HAS YOUR BUSINESS EXPERIENCED ANY IMPACTS FROM THE CURRENT SUPPLY CHAIN/PRODUCTION SLOWDOWN OR LABOR SHORTAGE?
Many categories were mentioned by our respondents, from material shortage, steel supply, bookings, labor specialty products, suspension, wheels and tires.
HOW HAVE YOUR CUSTOMERS REACTED TO ANY CHANGES IN LEAD TIMES OR PRODUCT AVAILABILITY?
No surprises here. All of the respondents indicated that there are varying degrees of difficulty either obtaining raw materials, products from supplier or staying adequately staffed.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO ADDRESS STAFFING ISSUES?
Responses to this question ranged from using temporary, part time employees and collage internships to "telling clients we can't get to them right now." WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO WORK AROUND PRODUCT SHORTAGE/INCREASED LEAD TIME ISSUES?
Aaron Matkowski of Artemis Overland Hardware says that they have been working on diverse lines & more advanced ordering. At TemboTusk, Jerry says they intend to "buy a larger supply than needed to make sure we have enough to keep production on schedule." At ChiTown 4x4, owner Joe Krelle says they "schedule jobs where product is available," and Jeremy Byington of New Holland Overland says he is attempting to source from alternative suppliers.
"BE PREPARED TO WAIT." Darin Marquardt Performance Off Road of Wisconsin
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR CUSTOMERS WHO MAY NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT IS HAPPENING OR WHO HAVE BEEN DISAPPOINTED IN THE RECENT CHANGES?
Darin Marquardt of Performance Off Road of Wisconsin says customers should be prepared to wait, it will still be tough to get products, we just have to deal with delays." Joe Krelle says "make sure you have your list of wants prioritized and researched. We might not be able to do a whole build, but can do parts of one, organization is very important. Joe adds to that, "saying no hurts our reputation, saying yes, and not having parts in time does that too. We need people to lower their expectations for a while, or everyone will be dissatisfied." Jerry L’Ecuyer, adds "most understand the issues we are facing."
"DO BETTER FORECASTING AND SEEK OUT LIKE MANUFACTURERS." Aaron Matkowski Artemis Overland Hardware
WHAT IS YOUR OUTLOOK FOR 2022 REGARDING THESE ISSUES, AND PLANS TO OVERCOME THESE OBSTACLES?
"Supply issues will stay constant, I don’t have high hopes for 2022 that they will change to be better," replied Jeremy Byington. Joe Krelle warns that "mechanics labor rates are very under valued, and it's getting worse, something is going to have to change, especially when the gear and products become more advanced." Aaron Matkowski says 2022 will be the same and they hope to "do better forecasting and seek out like manufacturers." "We will "buy a larger supply than needed to make sure we have enough to keep production on schedule," replied Jerry L’Ecuyer.
WHAT IMPACTS IN GENERAL DO YOU THINK THESE ISSUES HAVE ON ENTHUSIASM FOR THE OVERLAND, ADVENTURE OR TRAVEL ACTIVITIES SECTOR?
The responses to this question were the most divergent, with some seeing a decrease in participation, some predicting and increase and some saying the status quo will hold. What is clear is the flexibility and creative problem solving shown and an industry seeking innovation to keep the (camp)fires roaring. Thank you again to all our participants, we appreciate you taking part in our informal "state of the industry" study!

Gravel Roads
Finding the Oregon Trail (Road) in Illinois With Wanderlost & Northology Everyone needed to get out of the house the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Mark & Merri from Wanderlost Overland invited everyone on a nice slow trip down gravel roads through fields and past picturesque farmsteads. We traveled mostly through Ogle County in far north central Illinois in a circular route, covering around 100 miles, about 90% of the road surfaces were gravel, no "off-roading" or difficult terrain at all. About 30 vehicles showed up to join us for the fun. The start and finishing point was at Seward Bluffs Forest Preserve near the town of Pecatonica in Winnebago County. From there we headed west into Stephenson County, then south into Ogle County , with a stop at White Pines State Park for a quick lunch break, then back up north to the finish.
Mark calls a driver's meeting
"Located in the heart of the Rock River valley, the 385-acre White Pines Forest State Park is the south boundary of the historic Chicago-Iowa Trail. Among the park's most interesting features are the concrete fords that span the creeks, allowing visitors to drive through the flowing streams, with an accessible path leading to the stream bank for wildlife watching and fishing." -ILDNR
"What is now Ogle County was once a part of the Northwest Territory. In 1809 the Territory of Illinois was formed and included Wisconsin and Peninsular Michigan. In 1818 Illinois, in its present boundaries, became the 21st State to join the Union. Ogle County was formed in 1836 from a part of Jo Daviess County." -oglecounty.org
Keeping 30 rigs together and on the right route was easy with the Gaia GPS route provided before the ride. Many in our group use GMRS radios for keeping the convoy in contact and on the route. Tail gunner Cindy had the X-TALKER T51 two-way radios which have up to a 28-mile range, and communication with the Xtalkers was crisp and clear throughout the day.
Thanks, Mark & Merri Morrall from Wanderlost Overland for organizing this fun event. What a great day. If your group or club would like to submit photos and coverage from an event in your corner of the Midwest, please email Cindy at info.northologyadventures@gmail.com with details, description and photos.
'twas the night before Jeep Camp This poem was submitted anonymously for a Wisconsin Jeep Owners Group (WJOG) winter camp years ago. Enjoy.
Twas the night before Jeep Camp, and all through the land, Not a Jeeper was sleeping, the preparing was grand. The winch hung on the bumper, with bolts and the jack, In hopes that the mud would not hold it back. The bolts were all tightened, all snug in their nuts, The parts they supported, to get through the ruts. My wife in her night gown, and I in the newd, Had just settled down, for what I thought would be lewd. When out in the garage, I heard such a clatter It was parts from my (insert model) hitting the floor, and starting to scatter. Away to the garage door, I flew like a flash, My wanger was flopping, during the 50 yd dash. The rusting was constant, the mechanic was just bad, One more trip north, to Jeep Camp it had. I got to work wrenching, a panic set in, I put on the light bar and sanded the tin. On slider! On fender! On spare! I kept fixin', On CB! On roof tent! On hitch and camp kitchen! With a trailer full of supplies and smiles on our face, The next day we drove north at a very fast pace. That’s a lie, it was slow, small gears and big tires, And 5 stops later, I had to f**k with the wires. We Jeep and have fun, it’s a hell of a ride, Jeep camp is for fun, and fires and pride. So come and laugh and go up the hill, Flex and relax and show off your skill. Good people and friends we all go to meet, To talk smack, grill out and put up our feet. A salute to our hobby and breathing fresh air, Thanks to WJOG, for continuing to care. Different models, colors, we each have our game, Where the tire meets the ground, it all looks the same.

NIGHT CAT CAMPING HAMMOCK TENT Reccommendation by All Things Overlanding "I've tried a lot of sleeping solutions over the years. From hammocks, to tent camping with a cot and without, to roof top tents, and from that, I've learned that ease and speed of deployment and tear down are really important to me. Unless you're staying in one place for multiple days, you'll be setting up and tearing down at a new camp each night while you explore. So, I have spent about 7 nights in this all-in-one sleeping solution that includes a hammock, with adjustable straps, an integrated bug net, and a rain fly and it's great. For the money, it's probably the smallest footprint sleeping solution you'll find. Most importantly it's comfortable and quick to set up and tear down. I highly recommend it!"

BUSINESS PROFILE TRUE NORTH OUTPOST Owners & management: Austin Kalcec, Nate Alwine. Dan Okerlund, Evan Blagec W5768 Old Piers Gorge Road. Norway, MI. 49870 truenorthoutpost.com 906-239-4971 - truenorthoutpost@gmail.com
TELL US ABOUT TNO, HOW IT CAME TO BE, WHAT THE VISION WAS AND WHAT YOUR MISSION IS.
TNO was the vision of Nate & Austin in 2017. They had a mission to provide a fun, personal, family friendly adventure destination. They brought on their friend Evan as the general manager in 2018 when they started construction on a dilapidated 100 year old farm house that would very soon become the TNO store & outpost. When business opened in may 2019, owner of Northwoods Adventures Dan Okerlund came in to partner with the trio. Since then they have become equal partners. Together they strive to create an atmosphere of family and fun that you can feel from the moment you walk into the door until the moment you walk out. WHAT MAKES TNO UNIQUE?
Unlike many other adventure companies that treat you like a unit just to be pushed through an experience and then pushed out the door, the TNO Adventure Team takes the time to slow down and learn about your group and what they want from their time at True North. Each group is different and unique and what they want from their adventure is different and unique as well. So at TNO we do everything in our power to spend time with you and make you feel like part of the team. It's not enough for us to simply just have you witness adventure. We want you to feel it also. Hence our mission statement. “You tell us what you want your outdoor adventure to be, and we will find a way to make it happen for you.” WHAT ACTIVITIES DO YOU OFFER?
Where do we even start.... of course world class whitewater rafting on Piers Gorge in the Menominee River is a must for anyone visiting. But we also have an indoor rock climbing gym & workout area. We offer outdoor rock climbing trips, mountain bike rentals, canoe, kayak, paddleboard, and duckie rentals.
We also do a TON of custom trips. From our guided flat water float trips, to mountain bike trips, overnight rafting, kayak trips & overland tours. Camping, backpacking, hiking, guided fishing and so much more. We also do custom adventures. You tell us where in the U.P. you want to travel and what you want to see and we will get the guide and the gear together to get you and your group out for a one of a kind adventure. TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR AWESOME STORE!
Our 2,500 square foot retail store at the outpost is your one stop shop for everything from one of a kind local gifts, art and decor. To outdoor adventure gear, snacks and so much more! We even have an antique store! HOW DOES TNO SERVE THE VEHICLE-ASSISTED OUTDOOR ADVENTURE COMMUNITY?
Our president Austin Kalcec is an overland junkie. The outdoor vehicle assisted community is one that we have found over the years brings the best kind of people with the best kind of outdoor spirit. The nice thing about TNO is that you can park your rig at the outpost and have a weekend full of adventures. And after a beautiful night camping in a beautiful place we can point you anywhere in upper michigan you want to go next and we will help you find the coolest things to see and do. We just ask that you stop back in on your way home and show us the pictures and tell us all about your adventures. DOES YOUR BUSINESS GIVE BACK TO YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY?
True North believes very much in our local community. Sponsoring events and donating to local charities and auctions. We are involved with United Way, the local theater and play groups, community schools, community fundraisers, boy scout and girl scout groups, as well as the local trail system by partnering with the Dickinson Trail Network (DTN). We love our local community and try to give back to it whenever we can.
DO YOU HAVE ANY BIG PLANS OR PROJECTS COMING UP IN 2022?
The big plans for 2022. Some of them are in the works and we can't tell you about them yet, however we will say that we are excited about the amazing new things we are going to be offering in 2022. What we can say is that we will be overhauling our current offerings to make things more affordable, more fun and more personal. Giving our customers more bang for their buck by offering more with our trips while at the same time not sacrificing the amazing one on one experience that people have come to know us for. So look for all of the updates and announcements on our facebook page as well as our website. Bookings for 2022 activities will start by Jan 1st.

ABOUT THIS FEATURE
Rustic Retreat Reviews We don't always camp and we definitely have standards when it comes to non-camp lodging. Chain hotels? No. Haunted houses? No. Never-remodeled-orupgraded-in-60-years? No. We do love the rustic, the quirky, the historic, the off-the-beaten-path stays. In this monthly feature we plan to review some of the places we have stayed and give you an honest opinion. We are compiling a listing of our favorite Hipcamps, Air bnbs, cabins, lodges, yurts, whatever- if its fun, fresh or funky, we will let you know. If you are an establishment owner, please reach out and let us know about your place, we want to find the unique and share it with other adventurous travelers! If you are a traveler who wishes to submit review, please email us immediately!
LAKEWOOD, WI
Camp Lake Resort The quirky stone cottages nestling in the undulating, glacial landscape under a canopy of green must surely have been inspired by the Middle Earth abodes imagined by Tolkien. You almost expect to hear the "hi ho, hi ho," of dwarves as you roll down the window and slow to a crawl to gawk at this collection of lovely, old stone & log buildings, The curved, mossy roof-lines, brightly painted accents and utter uniqueness of each individual cottage reveal something new every time we pass by. This compound of kitchy cottages has been a favorite of families all over the midwest for years, and while we have not personally stayed here, we imagine one of these cottages serving as a fun basecamp for a unique experience while exploring the Nicolet National Forest.
The Gingerbread Cottages "Camp Lake Resort has two colorful stone cottages, two log cottages, an AFrame cottage (Pine Hideaway), and a newer gorgeous vacation home, Pine Haven. Each is unique in artistic design, inside and out. They are furnished for comfortable, relaxed and enjoyable vacationing." COPPER HARBOR, MI
Trails End Camper Cabins These cabins are some of our absolute favorite! Rustic, no-frills and economical, just what you need and nothing else. Especially cozy in the winter months, wood for the stove is included (purchase wood for the outside firepits in town,) The solar system worked great for us even on overcast winter weekends. The mattresses are extremely comfy, just bring a sleeping bag & pillow! The beauty of the woods surrounds you, bring your ice skates for a game of shimmy on the little lake, ski the property or snowshoe to Hunters Point Park and take in the stunning icy Lake Superior and Copper Harbor views. Can't wait to get back here and enjoy some upper peninsula winter.

Trick I’ve found for rice is to bring it to a boil then shut it off and let it steep for 5 min. Do this a few times to prevent boil over.

Easy

STEP 3 When rice is about done and most of water boiled off put meat back in. And allow to marry for 3-5 min.
CAJUN SAUSAGE FOIL PACKETS Prep
Time
15 Minutes
Foil packet dinners can be made ahead of time or whipped up quick at camp. Make sure you have an even bed of coals, and it's best to have a grate to cook them on but placing packets directly on the coals or rocks will workjust keep your eye on them!
