Hypothermia is a medical emergency that occurs when your body loses heat faster than it can produce heat, causing a dangerously low body temperature. When your body temperature drops, your heart, nervous system and other organs can't work normally Left untreated, hypothermia can lead to complete failure of your heart and respiratory system and eventually to death
Hypothermia is often caused by exposure to cold weather or immersion in cold water Primary treatments for hypothermia are methods to warm the body back to a normal temperature
Shivering Exhaustion Confusion Fumbling hands Memory loss
Slurred speech
Symptoms of hypothermia can include: Different stages of hypothermia:
Stage 1: mild 95 to 89.6 degrees: near normal feeling, you may notice some mental changes, shivering Stage 2: Moderate 89.6 to 82.4 degrees. Shivering stops, mental changes, Iimpaired judgement Stage 3: Severe: 82.4 to 75.2 degrees. Stage 4: apparent death 75.2 to 59 degrees Stage 5: irreversible death
Call emergency services if you notice any of these symptoms as you get colder your judgement and body function is impaired Once again, the best treatment is prevention and preparedness Avoid sweating through your layers, change out of wet clothes if possible Move to a warm area if not possible use an emergency blanket or hot hands in your kit Best placement for your hot hands to warm your whole body are under the armpits or in the groin area.
In short, we pack more layers than we think we need and put them on as appropriate we don’t leave all layers on when we don’t need them to avoid sweating, we bring a set of extra clothes in case we get wet (sweating, falling into water, or falling through ice), make sure you have extra emergency blankets, hothands or instant heat packs in your kit before you go

A MONTHLY REVIEW OF PRODUCTS TESTED IN THE FIELD
BY DAVID ZEMLAENDA KLEVER R/T
There are no lack of options when it comes to tires for your overlander. Mild to wild and everything in between are just a few clicks away My last Jeep rolled on 35” all terrain rubber, it seemed like a practical move considering a fair amount of the miles would be asphalt. First time wheeling it they filled with mud and I slid sideways into a tree Exo Cage rack saved the fragile roof, but it was clear I would need to revisit my tire choice. After that incident, they tolerated snowy winters, but failed me a number of times off road
Next rig was on 37” mud terrains and the sketchy ride and noise soon outshined their ability in the dirt Back to A/T’s I went and once again, they disappointed in anything even close to mud
Rig number three would require a complete rethink of rubber choices. Maybe leave it stock? No, that’s just silly. Maybe 12” wide meats are not the answer? Would it be possible to have a tall tire without the punishment that comes along with tall tires? Is there something in between the tepid all terrain and the overly aggressive mud terrain styles?
For this rig (a Jeep Gladiator with 2.5” Lift) a 35” tire on a factory diameter 17” rim would be ideal for both form and function.Unfortunately most of the rubber in this size range are 12.50 wide and aftermarket rims force an additional offset that tends to put them far outside the fenders guaranteeing mud/rock damage on the regular. Quite the conundrum.
This is where the Kenda Klever R/T shines The fairly deep lineup of the KR601 model included an oft ignored and surprisingly narrow 35*10 50R17LT Added bonus was the hybrid tread design of this model Fairly wide spaced tread blocks also featured heavy siping If you are not familiar with siping, these are the slits in the tread that open up as the tire rolls across terrain, particularly rain, snow or ice creating bite in where a standard tread block would not.
This lovely combination of A/T and M/T characteristics in a 10 5” seemed to be the ideal solution. Price point appeared to fall in the high $200 to low $300 range which seemed typical for a 35” tire
So how do they work? First off they measure in at 34”, which is also typical of this tire size and weigh mid sixty lbs each Not porky, but not light (readily evident when you have to lift one into the bed). Road performance is surprisingly quiet for a fairly aggressive 35” tire No roof or windows down they are pretty much what you’d expect Windows up, they are surprisingly quiet. Not clear if it’s the reduced footprint or the tread design, but they are easily on par with a conservitive All Terrain
How about rain, snow and ice? The heavy siping performs exactly as expected. A solid level of confidence no matter the road conditions has been my experience after a year of challenging midwestern weather Even with an ass light Gladiator, they felt planted and predictable all winter long.
Next up was dirt and mud The Klever R/T has an interesting habit of capturing and shedding small rocks. Although not frequent, the result in some conditions was relatively loud Mud performance to date has been excellent. The Klever’s propensity to shed rocks has similar results with mud and the tread blocks tend to remain open and effective Aired down, the tires 3 ply and very treaded sidewall flexes well over rough terrain, retaining traction and forward motion.
Liked them so much I wrapped my bug out trailer wheels in the same rubber. This gives me an interesting comparison tool,as the set on the Jeep just hit 20,000 miles and trailer has a bit over 3000 on the same rubber. You would be hard pressed to tell the difference in wear.
Complaints? Hard to find fault in the Klever’s so far, relatively quiet and more than adept at any terrain I’ve thrown at them so far. Maybe the lack of a 37” in the narrow width? Yeh that would be amazing!

Bike: 2020 Kona Woo with a Manitou Mastodon suspension fork.
We have a long boring winter here, and I was looking for something new and fun. I've always been into winter sports like snowboarding, skiing and snowshoeing so it was a natural progression. Plus, the locals were starting to groom winter fat bike trails so it seemed like I should probably check it out.
Favorite place to ride: My favorite place so far for winter riding is Levis Mound near Neillsville Wisconsin Hopefully this winter I'll be able to check out some new places and find a new favorite.
"I've always been into winter sports... it was a natural progression."
A fatbike (also called fat bike, fat tire, fat tire bike, or snow bike) is an off road bicycle with oversized tires, typically 3.8 in (97 mm) or larger and rims 2.16 in (55 mm) or wider, designed for low ground pressure to allow riding on soft, unstable terrain, such as snow, sand, bogs and mud. Fatbikes are built around frames with wide forks and stays to accommodate the wide rims required to fit these tires. The wide tires can be used with inflation pressures as low as 340 hPa; 0.34 bar (5 psi) to allow for a smooth ride over rough obstacles. A rating of 550 690 hPa; 0.55 0.69 bar (8 10 psi) is suitable for the majority of riders. Fatbikes were invented for use in snow and sand, but are capable of traversing diverse terrain types including snow, sand, desert, bogs, mud, pavement, or traditional mountain biking trails. The sport is sometimes referred to as fatbiking or fat tire biking. Wikipedia

I’ve always loved being outdoors in the winter I used to downhill and cross country ski, snowshoe and run during the winter, but now at age 70 my knees won’t tolerate those activities. So now during the spring, summer and fall I road, gravel and mountain bike The fat tire bike just allows me now do that during the snow season as well.
Favorite location to ride This one is hard. There are some fantastic groomed single
track trails around the Wausau area
There’s Ringle, Prairie Dells, and Big Eau Pleine. This year Nine Mile trails are opening up some winter single-track as well on a trial basis. When I’m over in the Langlade area however, I’ll ride the miles of fire lanes in the Nicolet National Forest and Langlade County Forest. There’s still a lot of logging activity after the 2019 storm and the loggers will keep the roads packed down and ridable up until spring breakup. If forced to pick a favorite, I'd have to go with riding fire-lanes and 2 track trails. The more remote, the better. I like to find those places where if you scream no one will hear you.
JOE KRELLE
I ride a RSD "Mayor" Fat Bike, its new to me this year, so no snow pictures yet, all my pictures are of past bikes, Bearclaw "Frank" and Salsa "beargrease"
I ride in the winter because its an escape from the daily grind and speed of life. Time and pace seems to slow down when I am riding in the snow. Nature is different in the winter, and there are so many more traces of animal movements and tracks without the underbrush to appreciate. Traveling along is slow, methodical, quiet, and there is time to stop and see things. There are less people in the forest preserves, less people on the trails, and no bugs!
My Favorite Trail for escaping people is a secret: But to go play with others, Raceway Woods Forest Preserve, is a blast after the trail groomers get over the snow.
I ride a Motobecane Sturgis It's a cheap bike that has granted me access to the winter time shenanigans. I've upgraded many components, cranks, cassette, derailleur added suspension and find myself seasonally swapping tires filled with carbides for conditions."
Many reasons for riding in the winter First and foremost it's a good way to stay active all winter and remain ready for the trails when the snow melts. Secondly it allows me to continue to hang out with my mountain biking friends though out the winter. The poor riding conditions build bike skills and make for some hilarious wrecks, its really some of the best group riding all year The winter time is secretly the best time to experience the trails. There is way less trail users if any, it feels much more peaceful and exclusive. Winter excursions also free up adventures like frozen lakes, treading where one cannot tread in the summer time. Much of the riding is also done after work in the dark which creates different experience of it's own There tends to be several fat biking events locally which seems to further connect the community as we all have to ride the same type of bike in often the same place.
My favorite location to ride Atwood Park in Rockford is some great winter riding. Steve keeps the trails well groomed and in great order for winter riding even when the snow piles on heavy Intermediate trails with berms like Big wheel are a riot to send in the winter time.

If you read last month's issue, which I'm sure you all did, you got to experience what "Overlanding The Red" is all about adventure, exploring, new friends, and old. As a bonus the event raised a few dollars for the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway, which is an amazing 100+ mile route around the area
The DBBB is mainly easy to moderate trails that run through the Red River Gorge and Daniel Boone National Forest.
Quick stop in Toledo
After 198,000 miles the old Jeep returned home for a visit and a quick photoshoot. It was a quick and easy stop right off the expressway. And yes, while this particular jeep was built a few miles up the road, this spot is all that's left to the original plant that dates back to 1910
Creation Fallsover 100 natural sandstone arches in the Red River Gorge area with miles and miles of hiking."
After spending so much time in the jeep we decided we needed to stretch our legs for a day and explore some of the short hiking trails to a few of the more easily accessible arches this area is known for. One of our first stops was at the Gladie Visitor Center to grab some maps and get some first hand information about the area. There are over 100 natural sandstone arches in the Red River Gorge area with miles and miles of hiking. I'd like to point out that we are in no way professional hiking people, we are definitely vehicle based adventureists! With only a day to explore we picked out a few of the more popular trails to explore. Most of these arches were a one to three mile round trip easy hike Just a warning though, this is a highly visited area so it does get very crowded on the weekends if you stick to the main points of interest. We ran into 3 separate weddings while in the area
"There are
It's only funny because it's true.
The first arch we hiked to was also the largest of the day. Natural bridge located in the Natural Bridge State Resort Park. The park is filled with hiking trails and other arches and canyons to explore, you could easily spend a day or 2 here We hiked up to the base of the arch and eventual up to the top before winding our way back down on another trail to find balanced rock before heading back to the Jeep. All in all it was a very easy 3 mile loop
"The park is filled with hiking trails and other arches and canyons to explore, you could easily spend a day or 2 here."View of the natural bridge from below. A wedding on top of Sky Bridge Arch
Our next stop was Rock Bridge Arch and Creation Falls This is the only actual "bridge" in the area in that it's the only one with a river flowing underneath it. This trail gave us a 2 for one deal with getting to explore Creation Falls. It was a beautiful fall day with perfect temperatures and amazing scenery.
Rock Bridge ArchThere are so many places to explore in the Red River Gorge area that it's impossible to fit it all in. We ended up doing such a high level overview that I know we missed a lot. This also makes it hard to go into much detail about all the places we got to see. But this gives us a reason to head back down to Kentucky next year and maybe concentrate on a few areas that need a little more adventure time. And yes, we totally went to an overland event and didn't actually overland! Sometimes you just have to get out from behind the wheel and not worry about the perfect backdrop to photograph your rig just kidding, I'll probably never stop doing that!

"I realized that my strength was being different." - Betsey Johnson
Besides the cost, the fact that it's different appealed to me I've never been one to just "follow everyone else" when it comes to vehicle selection or modifications so when I was considering my next vehicle, I knew the Frontier would be a great option that was underrepresented and would stand out in a crowd
I'm currently finishing up a full Titan swap (replacing all front and rear underpinning with full sized Nissan Titan axles, CV's, etc to make it more capable and more ready for the abuses of Overlanding) plus working on completing my build for long term off grid trips This includes solar charging a REDARC R b t

YOUTUBE & INSTAGRAM @ALLTHINGSOVERLANDINGI previously had an Xterra and I loved it, but I wanted a little more capability and more functionality that only a truck bed can provide So, after my good experience with the Xterra and the similar drivetrain (which is bulletproof for the most part), I went with a pre modded Frontier and despite some setbacks from the previous owner, it's really been great and surprised a lot of people.
There are a couple of reasons that I went with a Frontier over a Tacoma or other popular options One of which is the cost The Frontier is a super reliable truck for a fraction of the price of a comparable Toyota Plus, I've always been a Nissan person and had great luck with their vehicles, so I didn't see any reason to pay way more for another make when I knew the Nissan would be a good option for me
So, stay tuned for lots more exciting updates on the build and trips to come. If you want to follow along, come subscribe to All Things Overlanding on whichever channels you would like!
Here's my 2018 pro4x from Alberta Canada! I got into one after I crashed my ranger, I chose it because my buddy at work had a built Xterra and I loved how it looked I liked that these trucks are such a niche market when it comes to offroading despite being a great option in its class The locking diff was a big plus over many other trucks

& INSTAGRAM @ZAINWULFThis is my 2014 Nissan Frontier Pro 4X, and I use it for overlanding and off roading adventures with a very diverse group of friends and vehicles. I chose the Frontier back in early 2020 over any other midsize truck because it's a platformI hadn't seen used in US overlanding. Everyone was building a 4Runner, Tacoma, or a full size truck, but I wanted to stand out with the perfect budget build. Aftermarket support has been scarce for the D40, but that hasn't stopped me from making it stand out I soon found that overlanding is some thing I really want to invest in, so I made the decision to do the research and spend what was necessary to do it right this time
Today, my Frontier has an AT Habitat topper with AT's full cabinet system I've installed 200W of solar with a 100Ah lithium battery, running water with a 40L tank, a National Luna fridge and custom lighting throughout Inside the cab, I have a Sony ES head
unit, Yaesu HAM radio, a solid state switch panel forauxiliary lighting, and the back seat completely netted off for my canine companion Outside, the truck has OME Heavy springs and NitroCharger shocks (for now), an ARB bumper, sliders and the RB6 wheels from All Dogs Offroad All exterior lighting is from Diode Dynamics The truck keeps evolving over time, but even after everything done so far, I've still spent less than a new Jeep Gladiator Mojave
CINDY POPE
This is my 2019 Nissan Frontier Pro 4X We had a Frontier before and with the exception of the SMOD debacle, I loved that truck It drove like a car, got decent gas mileage and I liked the styling After I sold my Jeep (and a couple of vans,) and was looking for something offroad capable & able to tow a teardrop trailer on our wild camping trips, the Frontier was the frontrunner I am super happy so far and impressed with how easily it pulled the trailer up some pretty rough, washed out inclines.
The only things I have done so far is custom front & rear bumpers and sliders by Konyn Fabrication and the Freedom Retrofits halo projector headlights. I need to install the Midland MXT400 I have and the Nisstec MKII lift I recently picked up (thank you MoLeisure Xventures ) I will probably upgrade the tires and skid plates, add a winch and some lighting, I am also planning on a bedrack and an Ostrich Wing awning
"The main thing I love about the Nissan Frontier platform is simply being the underdog. These trucks are underrated and in my opinion better than most options for its year/make."

Marinette County's glacial landscape is perfect mountain biking terrain. Take a swath of land ripe for silent sports development, add a motivated county board, support from IMBA and watch the stars align on new trails for the community and tourists alike.
S T R O N G F A L L S
How did this get started?
The first rumblings of the project started in 2019. A few members of MAMBA were contacted by the county administrator wondering if we thought there would be interest in a professionally built mountain bike trail system. The answer was a resounding yes, and it took off from there.
On January 2, 2022, the Marinette Menominee EagleHerald reported that "Marinette County Administrator John Lefebvre updated the County Board last month on the progress of new mountain biking trails slated for development in the Goodman McClintock Park area in Athelstane
“What we’re trying to do is attract tourists to Marinette County as a recreational opportunity, but also to give people who live in this area an opportunity to use some of these features and recreational opportunities,” Lefebvre said."
We got in touch with the Marinette Area Mountain Bike Association to find out more about the project and its progress.
Why Marinette County?
Marinette County has a ton of interesting topography (glacier features, rock terrain) that is perfect for mountain biking. There are also few areas that have large tracts of land open for silent sport development, so in this case I guess the stars aligned.
Who are the driving forces behind the idea?
The major driving force has been the Marinette County administrator, John Lefebvre and the Marinette County Board. MAMBA has played a part, but we wouldn’t have dreamed that we would have a world
T R A I L S Y S T E M
MAMBA- MARINETTE AREA MOUNTAIN BIKING ASSOCIATION
MAMBA has been a loosely formed biking group since around 2018 The group includes all ages and riding abilities, and even though “Mountain Bike” is in the title, the group tries to have inclusive activities such as trail running and trail building days to get the community engaged with the outdoors and silent sports. With the new trail system going in we’re hoping to be able to draw folks in from surrounding areas to take part in group activities and build community.
class trail system as quickly as it came to fruition. John saw the opportunity and he and other county staff members really drove the trails into action.
Who is building these trails?
The trails were planned by IMBA Trail Solutions and jointly built with Rock Solid Trail Contracting. We were extremely lucky to have both groups taking on the project as they have many miles of trail building experience to draw from. There are also several miles of trails being built by County staff and MAMBA volunteers.
Tell us about the plan, what kind of trails are you creating? How many miles? Features? What type of rider are they intended for?
To date, there are 10.5 miles of trail built. There are a wide variety of trails ranging from flowy beginner trails to technical advanced trails. The advanced and intermediate trails have rock features that range from very rideable to apprehension inducing (picture big rocks to ride your bike off)! The trail system is intended for every level of rider. Beginner riders can completely bypass the advanced loops, and advanced riders can skip right over the beginner loops to the rocky sections.
The beauty of these trails are that the builders put a lot of thought into how to make the trails accessible and enjoyable for all riding levels. The final trail plans includes 50 miles of trail!
When will the trails open? Who will maintain the trails?
The trails will officially open in the Spring of 2023 when the snow clears and the trails are cleaned up from any winter storm downed trees The trails will be maintained jointly by the Marinette County Parks staff and MAMBA volunteers (and anyone else who wants to join us for trail days!)
Do you have any events planned around the trail opening?
Yes! It’s still in the works, but we will be planning a Grand Opening for Spring of 2023.
How can people find out more about this project?
The easiest way to find current information is to check the MAMBA Facebook Page, Instagram, or website. We’ll be posting regular updates on group rides, trail days, and general outdoor opportunities!
