where are they now? WOW, IT'S BEEN AWHILE, HUH? A lot has happened and we have some big plans for the future. So let's get into it, shall we? If you don't know who we are, you need to get out from under that rock. To reintroduce ourselves, we are Delia, Enoch & Ella (our pup). We have been overlanding full-time since November 2019. Our goal is to visit all of the National Parks in the US. As of 2022, we have visited 52/63 National Parks. The ones left are 7 in Alaska, 2 in Hawaii, 1 in American Samoa and a pesky one off the coast of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Isle Royale (We’ve tried going there 3 times in the 4 years with no success). More on that later, maybe.

UPDATES TO YOGI The last time you saw us, we were traveling in Yogi, a 2009 Nissan Xterra and we were pulling Boo-boo, an adventure trailer. Yogi has grown a lot since then. He got a new paint job (went from silver to green), dropped some weight (we let Boo-boo go), and did something different with his hair (we cut off the roof). Let’s dive into these changes.

Enoch has always thought about making a Troopy conversion to Yogi but there are no companies that do it, so he decided to take on the project himself. He chose a Big Country 4x4 rooftop tent for the cut because it is a fully welded aluminum roof top tent. We rented an Airbnb for 10 days, where he completed the cut and secured the tent to the roof. The cut was debuted at Overland Expo West in May 2022.

We decided to paint Yogi mainly because we wanted to be different. We kept seeing silver Xterras and wanted to stand out from the crowd. So we painted Yogi in Army Green paint mixed with bedliner giving him a more rugged look. It came out better than expected and has turned some heads since. We sold the adventure trailer because it just wasn’t working for us. The trailer didn't have off-road suspension causing us to break 2 spindles on the trailer. We were able to have the company install heavy duty suspension to the trailer before we sold it. It was a good trailer for weekenders but it just couldn't endure the abuse we were putting it through everyday use. Word of advice, make sure the trailer is actually off-road capable instead of just advertised as so. Our biggest change to Yogi has to be the custom “Troopy” pop-top camper conversion. He created the first full Nissan Xterra that you can stand in.

If you want to see how everything was done we have videos on our Youtube channel (#shamlessplug). He spent another 3 months building out the interior (storage, kitchen, house battery, etc.) and the final transformation was completed and shown at Overland Expo Mountain West in August 2022. Since then, we have kind of paused on visiting any new National Parks as it requires $3k per person to visit some of the remote National Parks in Alaska. We needed to slow our roll and save up for those trips and also make preparations for the Pan-Am Highway trip. We ended 2022 doing what we normally do, spending time with family during the holidays and going to Baja for the winter.

WHAT’S BEEN GOING ON IN 2023 This year, 2023, has been kind of slow. We tried to go to Isle Royale National Park in April once they opened for the season but learned the ferries don't start running until May which coincided with Overland Expo West. Alas another year not visiting that park. Our previous attempts consisted of: 2021 - ferries weren’t running due to Covid-19, 2022 - we were all booked for the ferry in September, the day before we were supposed to leave, something broke on the ferry and they canceled the rest of the season; it’s just not meant to be. We attended and taught classes at all of the Overland Expos and we were featured in their “Why We Roam” series on Youtube. Enoch continued to modify Yogi as it’s never fully completed, always a work in progress, and I did a bit of traveling with my family. The biggest update to announce from this year is Enoch started a new job with Alldogs Offroad Coop! He is officially their Community Manager and is the person you will speak to when you call, email or chat with them. We have been staying in Lincoln, NE for the time being while Enoch gets used to his new position.

2024 AND BEYOND We have pushed the Pan-Am Highway trip to 2025 as the group is not quite ready yet. We have also been talking of an overland trip to Asia. But alas, all of these plans require money. So 2024 will solely be focused on working hard to save up money to make our future plans possible. Maybe we will finally visit Isle Royale National Park! We may be working on some plans to change the pop-top camper but we can't share details on that yet. We will definitely be attending Overland Expos again. You can also catch us attending KOAR and OTR! There will be other events scattered in between as life on the road is ever changing. You can keep up with our adventures on Instagram @moleisurexventures. Until next time, thank you for reading and see you on the trail!

AN EPIC NOVEMBER ADVENTURE

BAD LANDS / BLACK HILLS by Mykelti Jones

Editor’s Note: This picturesque area of southwest South Dakota comprises two distinct regions: the Badlands, featuring rugged terrain and canyons, and the Black Hills, a mountain range covered in dense forests. Separated by only 70 miles, the two areas can be easily visited on a long weekend trip. Thanks, Mykelti, for sharing these amazing photos with us.

On Tuesday November 21st, my friend Derek and I set out for a four day trip to the southwest corner of South Dakota. Our adventure began at Lake Vermillion Campground near Sioux Falls, where we arrived late and hunkered down amidst the winds.

The following day, we explored Buffalo Gap National Grassland, with temperatures dropping to around 22 degrees we decided to set up camp on an overlook of Badlands National Park. We set up an ice fishing tent along with Derek's diesel heater where we cooked our dinner out of the wind.

Day three led us along forest service roads, tracing Badlands

where a quick alternator change got us back on track.

Our next stop was Black Hills National Forest where we drove some more trails and

The next day, we meandered through the Black Hills, exploring Custer State Park before heading home, camping near Sioux Falls once more. Despite a 14hour drive split over two days, the memories of this overland adventure demand a return to uncover more hidden gems.

GRIT + GRACE BESTIES PREP FOR THE REBELLE RALLY The Rebelle Rally is a woman-only competition that combines multiple types of navigation and driving challenges including navigation to checkpoints, checkpoint accuracy, time, speed, and distance.

DANIELLE NOONAN & CARA MCCLELLAN

How did you both become interested in the RR, and what motivated you to complete as teammates? Danielle: I first learned about RR after my husband read an article in an overlanding journal. I wanted to compete in this rally, but all of my off-road experiences had been predominantly with male groups. I kept thinking to myself I would never meet another woman who was as passionate about overlanding and offroading as I was AND be a person I would want to have as a teammate. My husband and I frequently watched YouTube videos and one couple we routinely watched was Ozark Overland Adventures– Cara’s, and her husband, Matt’s, YouTube channel. I was fortunate to cross paths with Matt on an overlanding trip which set the stage for me to meet Cara. Cara and I eventually met at an off-road park in Arkansas, and that was the beginning of our connection. I was impressed with Cara’s off-road driving skills and saw her passion for adventure. When I pitched the idea of RR to her she immediately looked it up online and said “I’m in!”. It’s always funny to me remembering us sitting in that pizza restaurant and saying, “Hey, you wanna do this intense women’s only rally that might be the hardest thing we ever do?” and seeing her excitement.

Can you tell us about your respective backgrounds and experiences that make you well-suited for this offroad navigation rally and how did you decide on which roles to fill? Danielle: Growing up in south Florida, I have always enjoyed and sought out any kind of outdoor adventure. I spent most of my childhood going to dirt track races, swamp buggy races or spending nights and weekends with my dad in mechanic shops wrenching on something. I married an equally adventurous husband, and we have spent our entire adult lives traveling the world to very remote places. Using paper maps was all I ever knew during my travels until smart phones came about. While I’m very comfortable driving various terrains in my Land Rovers, Cara has years more experience than I do driving off-road. Since we had already agreed that using Cara’s Jeep in the rally was the best vehicle choice for us at this time, it just sort of fell into place that she would be the primary driver, and I would be the navigator. Even though we have chosen each to fill a specific role, we are both learning land navigation together. It’s important if I am ever uncertain about plotting a point of a bearing, Cara can double check with me.

What kind of preparation have you undertaken to enhance your skills in navigation, off-road driving and teamwork? We decided to spend the majority of 2023 overlanding, attending off-road events as well as sharing the role of leading women’s only groups off-road as preparation for us as a team. We felt it was important to really know each other and how we each react in different situations. We have spent countless hours reading books and watching videos about land navigation. We are about to attend our first land navigation course together, and that’s going to be the real first hand’s on experience doing land navigation. We will be attending a navigation and driving course in late January put on by RR veteran, Nena Barlow, in Southern Arizona and California. There are also 2 additional in person courses we will be attending offered by RebelleU in 2024. I think our biggest challenge will be the navigation portion of the rally and probably the sand dunes. Sand dunes are not something either of us have really had much practice with. This past summer we were fortunate enough to spend time with a two-time RR competitor, Katie Abraham, out west and she took us to some sand dunes and gave us a crash course. We were both so grateful for that experience. Could you share some insights into the equipment and tools used to successfully navigate the course? The RR does not allow digital navigation or GPS. We will even be required to lock up our phone for the duration of the event. The rally isn’t a race for speed but rather focuses on pace and precision. It is critical that we are able to use headings, time and distance maps, compasses, plotters, stopwatches and roadbooks to find the hidden checkpoints. Dusting off long unused math skills will even come into play. The maps given to us vary in scale size from 1:50,000 to 1:200,000 and may require a magnifying glass to accurately plot. The 2023

rally had a plot twist where they were given a map on a scale they had to create their own ruler for. Not often discussed is that we will be navigating and tracking our distance in kilometers, as it is more accurate than miles, and being as precise as possible when signaling the tracker at checkpoints will be critical in points at the end of each day. That is something we both have to become more familiar with and will need to equip the Jeep with a Terratrip rally computer which will be used as our odometer. How do you plan to manage your time effectively during the competition to ensure you stay on track and meet your goals? We have talked about what we think each of our duties will be during the competition, not only while driving and navigating during the day, but in the mornings and evenings as well. We will each have specific duties that will allow us to most effectively prepare for our day of driving and navigation as well as wind down in the evening to try and get the rest needed to be ready to go the next day. Of course we know everything will not go as we plan, and it will be important that we both expect the unexpected. Being able to adjust accordingly and quickly will help us stay on track. What strategies do you have in mind for adapting to and driving on the different types of landscapes and road conditions ? First and foremost is understanding our vehicle. We are very fortunate that Cara has driven her Jeep in nearly all types of the terrain that we will experience during the competition, and we will be training on terrain (sand dunes) that we are not as experienced on. We are both knowledgeable about what tire pressures we should be running on different terrain, safe speeds to minimize damage to the vehicle and off-road recovery if we get in a situation where we are stuck.

The Rebelle Rally emphasizes precise navigation over speed. How do you plan to approach the challenge of finding hidden checkpoints and maintaining accuracy? Cara: A previous Rebelle Rally competitor made this statement, “This competition isn’t about speed; however, one has to go as slow as possible but as fast as necessary.” These checkpoints are not disclosed beforehand and will challenge us to rely on our navigational skills. I can assure you that as a team, Danielle and I, will be triple checking everything throughout the competition. We will be stopping and getting out ALOT! I’m not especially excited for the hidden checkpoints–to not see a flag, to not 1000% know or validate that we are on target. Having to click in the tracker when we arrive to what we believe is the hidden checkpoint will probably be the most nerve-racking part of the experience!! What are some of the unique challenges that you anticipate facing during the 8 days of competition, and how do you plan to overcome them? Cara: Ooof. This is a hard one for me personally. I struggle a lot with insecurity. I always have and while I’ve tried to overcome that, in some situations, it rears its ugly head even louder. Knowing that there are going to be so many amazing women out there competing really makes me feel even more withdrawn. Comparison is the thief of all joy. I want to overcome that, and truly embrace my strengths and my weaknesses out there. I want to be able to truly celebrate the smallest accomplishment of myself, of my teammate’s, and of other women competing–without belittling myself in my mind. Danielle: I think my biggest challenge is going to be not burning out from exhaustion both mentally and physically. Something I tell myself when I’m exhausted or struggling with doing something that’s hard is “this is only temporary”. I know the exhaustion and discomforts will be over soon. It helps me to push on and succeed at what I am trying to accomplish. I try to be very intentional about the thoughts in my head to keep me uplifted. I want to think about what could go right rather than put energy into thinking about what could go wrong. I don’t always end my day this way, but I know it’s what I need to do. Every morning is a new day. My goal is to not let a bad moment steal joy from my entire day. Oh, and coffee. Coffee will help me overcome all those early morning wake up call challenges I will have to face.

“I want to overcome that, and truly embrace my strengths and my weaknesses out there. I want to be able to truly celebrate the smallest accomplishment of myself, of my teammate’s, and of other women competing...” -Cara

Teamwork is essential in the Rebelle Rally. How have you been working on building a strong and efficient partnership to tackle this event together?

“The Rebelle Rally is the first women’s off-road navigation rally raid in the United States. Blending the love of driving with the ultimate challenge of precise navigation, the Rebelle tests your skills over 8 days of competition. It is not a race for speed, but a unique and demanding event based on the elements of headings, hidden checkpoints, time, and distance using maps, compass, and roadbook.”

Cara: In the Rebelle Rally, teamwork between the driver and navigator is crucial. Clear communication is key, with precise instructions from the navigator and quick, accurate responses from the driver. Trust between Danielle and I is paramount, as split-second decisions can determine success. Regularly reviewing and optimizing strategies, maintaining a strong connection, and adapting to unforeseen challenges contribute to a winning rally team. We knew we wanted to compete together a couple of years ago. However, we didn’t know that much about each other besides our driving skills. We spent 2023 really honing in the relationship–discovering likes/dislikes, what upsets us, our passions, etc. We were friends before..but now we are even closer. I consider Danielle as someone I could trust my life with. More than a best friend, she is like the sister I’ve always wanted but never had. Danielle: Ya, what Cara just said. (I’m not crying, you’re crying) What are your ultimate goals for the Rebelle Rally, and what would winning or achieving a certain ranking mean to you as a team? Cara: Danielle and I both have our own goals for the race, and yes, multiple goals. We have a couple main ones and then back ups if those higher levels don’t pan out. One of my top goals is to finish in the top 20. I know that’s a lofty goal for it to be our Rookie year, but go big or go home, right? When (see what I’m doing there) we accomplish that, there will be lots of wine..and tears..and celebration. It’ll be the personal affirmation that I’ve been looking for in the off-road industry that is mostly a male dominated sport. As a side note, another MAIN goal for me (the most important one) is to still have my best friend after this competition... HAHA! I’m kidding (kinda). Danielle: Just like Cara, I have a lofty goal and dream to finish in the top 20 of our rookie year. I can see the veteran RR competitors reading this and laughing right now (I’m laughing with you). This is a dream competition I have wanted to do for nearly 5 years. The fact that I’m actually competing in it is achieving a goal already. When (I’m pulling a Cara) we rank in the top 20 it’s going to be a “WE DID IT!” moment for me. A feeling of starting and finishing something so hard that most people will never understand or experience. I want Cara and our husbands to be proud of us more than anyone else. All the sweat, blood and tears (literally all of those) will have been worth it to share that feeling of accomplishment with them.

CONVOY

CONVERSATIONS A trail ride group in Wisconsin plays the new "Radio Chatter Game", where they ask and answer questions over the radio to spark conversation and get to know one another better.

The sun hung low in the sky as our convoy made its way off the pavement, kicking up dust and tumbling leaves in its wake. As we drove through the dense Wisconsin woods, the radio crackled to life with the familiar hum of excitement. We were introducing a unique twist to our journey—an ingenious game called the "Radio Chatter Game." Each participant was handed a few of the cards from a deck of 52 question cards designed to spark conversations over the radio during the trail ride. I glanced at my deck, curious about the questions that would lead us through this unconventional icebreaker. The first card I drew posed an intriguing question, "If you could overland anywhere in the world, where would it be, and why?" Eager to kick off the game, I keyed the mic and shared my dream destination, the words bouncing off the trees and into the ears of my fellow overlanders. The radio waves soon buzzed with excitement as others chimed in, sharing their bucket-list destinations, each response painting a vivid picture of their adventurous spirits. As we continued along the trail, the radio chatter seamlessly transitioned from discussing dream locations to tales of past overland journeys and the lessons learned along the way. The questions on the cards delved into personal preferences, travel anecdotes, and even off-road mishaps. Laughter echoed through the forest as we swapped stories of muddy misadventures, vehicle rescues, and the unexpected joys of overlanding. The radio chatter game acted as a catalyst, breaking down barriers and fostering a sense of camaraderie among us.

As the stories unfolded, we discovered common threads that wove our experiences together. The crackling flames, starlit skies, and shared meals became the backdrop to countless cherished memories that transcended the boundaries of our individual journeys. The trail ride became more than just ride; it transformed into a shared adventure, a collective exploration of our passions and the stories that shaped us. The Radio Chatter Game, with its thoughtprovoking questions, had turned a group of strangers into friends, bound by a common love for exploration and dirt roads. As we approached the end of the ride, the sun dipping below the horizon, the radio chatter gradually shifted to expressions of gratitude. The game had not only sparked conversations but had also forged connections that we knew would extend beyond today. We said goodbyes to those leaving, promising to meet again on future adventures and the remaining members set out for camp. This was more than just a trail ride; this was a journey of getting to know our fellow travelers. The game had breathed life into our day, turning it into a tapestry of shared stories, laughter, and newfound friendships—all born from the simple act of asking questions and listening over the airwaves.

Overlanding and winter camping in the Midwest can be a rewarding adventure, but it requires careful planning and preparation. Here are some tips to make your winter car camping experience enjoyable and safe:

COLD COMFORT TIPS FOR CAMPING IN THE WINTER Winter car camping in the Midwest can be rewarding but requires careful planning. Essential tips include checking weather conditions, choosing the right vehicle, packing warm clothing and gear, staying hydrated and nourished, practicing leaveno-trace principles, and traveling with a buddy. Emergency supplies, route planning, and Leave No Trace principles are also important. Remember to prioritize safety and be prepared for unexpected challenges.

1. Check Weather Conditions: Stay updated on forecasts and road conditions. Be prepared for sudden changes in weather. 2. Choose the Right Vehicle: Ensure your vehicle is suitable for winter conditions. Four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and good ground clearance is recommended. Equip your vehicle with snow tires for better traction. 3. Winter Camping Gear: Bring extra warm clothing layers, waterproof outer layers, hats, gloves, and insulated boots. Invest in a four-season tent that can handle snow and wind. Use a good-quality, cold-weather sleeping bag and a well-insulated sleeping pad. Bring a reliable cook stove as well as extra fuel. 4. Stay Hydrated and Nourished: Stay well-hydrated, even in cold weather. Dehydration can occur just as easily in winter. Bring high-energy, easy-cook meals and snacks. 5. Water Management: Insulate your water bottles to prevent freezing. Consider using a thermos for hot drinks. 6. Emergency Supplies: Pack a winter emergency kit, including a first aid kit, extra blankets, hand warmers, and a shovel. Carry a portable jump starter for your vehicle battery (cold can affect battery performance.) 7. Know Your Route: Plan your route in advance and inform someone about your travel plans. Be aware of alternative routes and emergency services in the area. 8. Practice Leave No Trace: Follow Leave No Trace principles. Dispose of waste properly. Avoid disturbing wildlife. 9. Practice Setting Up Camp: Familiarize yourself and practice setting up your campsite in winter conditions before your trip. 10. Stay Informed: Monitor local regulations and restrictions, especially in national parks and public lands. Keep an eye on weather updates during your trip. 11. Travel with a Buddy: Whenever possible, travel with a companion. Share responsibilities and tasks, especially in setting up camp and dealing with emergencies. Remember, safety is the top priority, so use your judgment and be prepared for unexpected challenges that winter camping may bring. Maybe the best tip is to have a backup plan and a safe place to bail out to if your winter camping experience goes sideways.

3 Gift giving tips for adventure lovers GIVE THE BEST GIFTS

When selecting gifts for loved ones who are passionate about outdoor, overland, off-road, and adventure travel activities, it's essential to consider their specific interests and needs. Tailoring your gift to their needs and passions will show how much you care and appreciate their love for the great outdoors. Here's some tips to help you choose the perfect gifts for all the outdoor adventure enthusiasts on your list.

PERSONALIZED GEAR Outdoor enthusiasts often value high-quality gear that enhances their experiences. Start by identifying their specific needs, whether it's camping, hiking, or off-road adventures. Consider items like a durable and comfortable backpack, a top-notch sleeping bag, or specialized cookware for campfire meals. To make the gift even more special, look for personalized gear such as custom-engraved multi-tools or customized water bottles featuring their name or a meaningful quote. Personalized gear not only enhances their outdoor adventures but also adds a personal touch to your gift.

ADVENTURE EXPERIENCES

3

Sometimes, the best gift for an outdoor enthusiast is an unforgettable adventure. Research and book an adventure experience in a location they've always dreamed of exploring. Options could include a guided wilderness expedition, an event they have always wanted to go to, or even a weekend getaway to a remote cabin. Adventure experiences provide cherished memories that will last a lifetime and offer an opportunity for your loved one to indulge in their passion.

EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES AND SUBSCRIPTIONS For those who love the outdoors and adventure travel, knowledge is a valuable asset. Consider gifting them books on wilderness survival, navigation, or outdoor photography. You can also provide a subscription to a travel or adventure magazine to keep them inspired. Subscriptions to related apps (think Gaia GPS, OnX, Garmin InReach) are useful and appreciated. Educational resources not only expand their expertise but also show your thoughtfulness in supporting their interests.

THE MINI EXPEDITION The True North Outpost 2-day mini expedition gives you the opportunity to experience both the exhilaration of rafting and the relaxation of camping. Your guide will ensure that every aspect of your trip is covered, from your arrival through your departure is covered.

GUIDED FLY FISHING TRIP Dark Waters Fly Shop is offering “destination style” guided fly fishing trips where meals, gear and lodging is included. Whether you want to fish for Brook Trout, Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout or seasonal lake-run fish in Lake Superior tributaries, a trip with Seth is sure to be an unforgettable adventure.

Outdoor Traditions The act of choosing and cutting down your own Christmas tree is, in itself, an outdoor adventure. It often involves traveling to a tree farm or even venturing into a nearby forest, depending on local regulations and availability. This adventure can be an exciting and memorable experience, especially for those who love spending time in nature and exploring the outdoors. It combines the thrill of the hunt with the joy of celebrating the holiday season and creates lifelong memories.

USFS Christmas Tree Permits Purchase your Christmas tree permit in advance, and use this site to purchase your permit, follow tips and guidelines for the cutting area, and ensure you are prepared for a safe and fun forest adventure. Looking for a Christmas Tree farm or lot near you? Use the NCTA Real Christmas Tree Locator to find Christmas Tree retailers in your area.

Recovery & safety gear Giving vehicle safety and recovery equipment as Christmas gifts is a thoughtful and practical way to show loved ones that you care about their well-being and support their adventurous spirit. Such gifts enhance their safety on the road and provide peace of mind during outdoor explorations, reflecting a genuine understanding of their interests.
