IN THIS ISSUE NOTES FROM THE EDITOR The New Year brings a fresh start and after the holidays, the real beginning of winter camping season. The front cover of this magazine shows you just what we have been dealing with here in the upper Midwest... a BROWN Christmas. I would take 24" for the Wisconsin OverlandXmas Tree hunt over this dreary drab mudfest any day. January issue highlights include a preview of the MOORE Expo and expansion with their new Power Sports Expo, The OverlandXmas Tree Hunt, winter camping and wheeling, winter sports, trip planning and some adventure wishes and plans for the new year by some of our Northology Adventures facebook group community. A

camping journal can be a valuable tool for planning adventures and preserving memories from your trips in 2024. Documenting your trips for reference is also helpful to settle future arguments about who burnt the toast, which trip you forgot to pack coffee, what route takes you past a Taco Bell or all the locations your vehicle has broken down. Important stuff! Trip Planning: Use your camping journal to plan upcoming adventures. Jot down potential destinations, desired activities, and the gear you'll need. This helps organize your thoughts and serves as a reference when preparing for the trip. Itinerary and Notes: Create detailed itineraries for each camping trip in your journal. Include information such as campsite details, hiking trails, and notable points of interest. Use the journal to jot down important notes, contact information, and any reservations you make or tours you want to take. Packing Lists: Maintain packing lists for different types of trips. Having a checklist in your journal ensures you don't forget essential items, and it makes the pre-trip preparation more efficient (don’t forget the coffee!) Weather and Conditions: Record weather conditions during your camping trips. This information can be helpful for future planning, allowing you to anticipate the climate and adjust your packing accordingly. Wildlife and Nature Observations: Document your encounters with wildlife, interesting flora, and any unique natural phenomena. Over time, your journal becomes a personalized nature guide, helping you recognize patterns and seasonal flows.

Reflections and Experiences: Write about your experiences, emotions, and the highlights of each camping trip. Capture the essence of the journey, whether it's a breathtaking sunrise, a challenging hike, or the warmth of a campfire. Reflecting on these moments enhances your connection to nature and fellow travelers. Photography or Sketch Log: Pair your written entries with photographs or drawings. Use your journal to log details about each photo, such as the location, people, and stories behind the images. This creates a comprehensive visual and written record of your adventures.

This good old-fashioned notebook is great for jotting things down if you are into structuring your memory documentation on the fly or want to include photos, sketches, tickets and flyers.

Improvement and Lessons Learned: Note any challenges faced during your trips and how you overcame them. Document lessons learned and improvements you can make for future adventures. This helps refine your camping skills and enhances the overall experience. Gratitude and Achievements: Express gratitude for the positive aspects of your camping experiences. Acknowledge achievements, whether they involve conquering a challenging trail or simply finding peace in nature. Focusing on gratitude adds a positive dimension to your journal. Trip Ratings and Recommendations: Rate your camping trips based on your overall satisfaction. Include recommendations for others who might be interested in visiting the same locations. This makes your journal a valuable resource for fellow adventurers.

The digital, downloadable Northology Wild Camping Journal & Planner has printable lists and campsite rating pages for future reference.

A camping journal helps create an archive of your outdoor adventures. Over time, this journal becomes a source of inspiration, a tool for planning, and a record of the memories and experiences that define your connection to the outdoors. And you’ll have a reminder that stopping a Taco Bell on your way to that one campground where the bathroom is half a mile away is not the wisest choice.

2024 Trip Planning

If digital documentation is more your style, we recommend this Adventure Travel Log by All Roads Taken. Start building out your adventure log by recording your past trips with photos, vehicles, and more.

Five years of giving you Springfield, MO is gearing up for the fifth annual Midwest Overlanding and Off-Road Expo (MOORE Expo), scheduled to take place in April. This highly anticipated event promises to be bigger and better than ever, with a host of exciting additions and improvements to make it an unforgettable experience for overlanding and off-road enthusiasts.

A Celebration of Adventure & Community The MOORE Expo has grown from a 33,000 square foot space inside half of the Ozark Empire Fair Eplex to a massive event encompassing the whole fairgrounds. “The growth and success of an event is often the result of a strong vision, hard work, and dedication. It requires a deep understanding of the market, a willingness to take risks, and the ability to adapt and pivot when necessary. Above all, it requires a team of passionate individuals who are committed to delivering value and creating a positive impact for all attendees and the broader community," states Chris Holloway, MOORE Expo founder. While the Expo has grown, it has still managed to keep its midwest roots and chill vibe. Chris’s family members greet you at the entrance, the campground check-in volunteers are a team of friends, and the relaxed atmosphere is just downright midwest nice.

A noteworthy addition to this year's MOORE Expo is the Power Sports Expo, seamlessly integrated into the main event. Purchasing a MOORE Expo ticket automatically grants access to the Power Sports Expo, offering attendees a comprehensive experience that goes beyond traditional overlanding. This expanded scope caters to a broader audience, making the event a mustattend for all adventure enthusiasts.

Hundreds of Vendors and Exhibitors in an Improved Layout One of the highlights of the MOORE Expo is the extensive lineup of vendors, numbering in the hundreds. From top-notch gear to cutting-edge vehicles and accessories, attendees will have the opportunity to explore a vast array of overlanding and off-road products. The organizers have introduced a new vendor layout, enhancing the overall flow of the expo and making it easier for visitors to discover the latest and greatest in the overlanding, off road and powersports world.

Storyteller Row and Partnership with a Noble Cause- It’s All About the Kids For those eager to connect with their favorite overlanding influencers, the Storyteller Row presents an exciting opportunity. YouTube and Instagram personalities will be available to meet the public, providing fans with a chance to interact with them on a personal level. In a commendable move, the MOORE Expo has partnered with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children through the Storyteller Row program, using its platform to raise awareness and support.

The SMORR2MOORE Overland Rally, in partnership with MidlandUSA, is a thrilling part of the MOORE Expo. This rally promises adventure and adds an extra layer of excitement for attendees. The rally course is set up between the expo and the Southern Missouri Off Road Ranch (SMORR.) Participants turn in their rally books for grading to win many prizes provided by our friends at Midland Radio.

In the Spirit of Adventure A Christmas Tree Hunt or Just an Excuse for a Day in the Woods? A WISCONSIN OVERLAND GATHERING Photos from Wiscosnsin Overland participants. For the fifth year, members of Wisconsin Overland came together for a camping weekend and a Christmas tree hunt in the Nicolet National Forest. This annual event is mostly an excuse to get outside for a weekend with friends, meet new people and shoot the shit around a big campfire.

NO SNOW, NO PROBLEM...MOSTLY The lack of snow took most of the challenge out of the local forest roads but we still found some opportunities to get creative to avoid dragging and spinning the tires. Traction boards always come in handy and are a great first option to get you unstuck or over obstacles & through ruts cleanly.

15

OBSTRUCTED MVUM ROUTES We encountered a few routes that were open on the MVUM but bermed or completely impassable. This is one of the many issues we have with national forest management- dead ends are a pain to turn around on, whether its one vehicle or three or four.

FREE STICKERS & A GIVEAWAY Cory won the giveaway gift package- a handwarmer, emergency first aid mini-kit, an emergency blanket, and some campfire flame colorchange packets. Everyone attending recieved a little gift package of candy, a Wisconsin Overland sticker and a couple of Tread Lightly! info cards.

Thanks to Jamee & Wolf River Roots for hosting our group. Stop in for Collectivo coffee, breakfast, lunch, snacks, gifts and outdoor connections. Wolf River Roots W1702 WI-64, White Lake, WI (715) 575-1287 wolfriverroots.com

winter camping YOUTUBERS IN THE WILD

EDITION

Winter Is Coming... Isn’t It? Winter Camping Inspiration for the reluctant. Winter car camping, overlanding, mobile glamping, whatever you call it, is not for the faint of heart. It takes skill, preparation, and a deep respect for the impersonal laws of nature that lie hidden beneath the surface of the winter landscape. A landscape which is currently uncharachteristically brown instead of buried under a blanket of snow. More on that later.

This is admittedly a fluff piece. A story amied at inspiring you and showing you that winter camping is fun. Here we highlight some upper Midwest YouTubers, who showcase how to make the most of the cold, utilizing the right gear and techniques to stay warm and comfortable. From cooking over a campfire to setting up a cozy sleeping space, their videos offer a glimpse into the world of winter camping. But it's not just about survival - it's about thriving in the midst of the winter wonderland. These adventurers embrace the challenges of the season, from icy roads to blustery winds, and show us how to make the most of every moment. Whether you're an experienced camper or just starting out, their tips and tricks will inspire you to take on the winter.

Curious to see why in the world someone would camp in the winter? In his Boy’s Night Out video, Matt captures the beauty and peacefulness of the snowy woods and shows why winter camping is more enjoyable with a friend as it fosters camaraderie and teamwork in challenging conditions. Having an extra vehicle around for help getting unstuck is helpful. The shared moments of laughter, responsibility, and awe of the winter wonderland outside the tent transform the experience into a shared adventure.

“...relaxed, focused and grateful for a night in the woods.” -Matt Frey

“...staying dry in the cold temps is super important.” -Jason Fletcher “I recently went on a winter dispersed camping trip and the main comment I saw on pictures and videos was "how can you have fun with temps that cold" or "I love camping, but not when it's that cold." So, I wanted to run down a list of some helpful tips that can not only help you survive winter camping, but even make it fun and enjoyable.” We love Fletch’s tips- layering clothing to stay warm, selecting the proper sleeping bag and things to do around camp to make the next morning easier. “It’s always colder the next morning,” says Jason.

Love the Adventure Anywhere channel if only for the enthusiasm and fun family antics, but you can’t deny the ingenuity of running the diesel heater hose into the potty tent, what a game changer! Mike, Stacie and Adalyn have more fun in the winter than most people do all summer. Some of the places they go, we have only seen in the summer. We love seeing how the landscape transforms each season and hope they inspire you and your family to embrace the cold!

Although the camping party for this trip was a fraction of what it was supposed to be, Jonny & Colleen make the most of it. “This was the coldest weather we have all camped in, there were propane failures, diesel heaters were gelling and cameras/drones were frozen...Even our beers were freezing with our lips sticking to the can!”

Jason and Melissa have embraced year-round camping and we were intrigued by their use of the hot tent as a “living room” for lounging, food prep and shelter from the elements- that is such a great idea. Definitely take a look at this video if you are interested in hot tents, teardrop camping or absolutely stunning winter videography.

“I haven’t had a group trip like this that was ever a bad one or where I didn’t have fun or built some better relationships with people,” says Hunter Kurdziel on his Rebel Outdoors video about a camping trip with the New Holland Overland group. This edit is a guilty pleasure and it really scratches the itch when you want to reminisce about winter wheeling in the upper midwest. Hunter also has a few tips on cold winter camping in this and other videos on his channel. As of December 31, we still have almost zero snow on the ground. Until we do, I will be watching YouTube for inspiration, but it might make the anticipation even more unbearable... Let it snow already!

“I haven’t had a trip like this that wasn’t fun.” -Hunter Kurdziel

I RIDE, I DRIVE, I OFF-ROAD, I TREAD LIGHTLY!

BY KEVIN VERSINO

WHY I EMBRACE WINTER SPORTS Wind, cold, snow, ice. Bring it on! For some people, the first snow of the season is like a root canal without Novocain. Shorter days combine with colder temps to induce Cabin Fever. For others, they look forward to the first snow like a kid on Christmas morning. Frantically looking for trail updates to see where adventure may take them. Then we have the group in the middle. They could make do without winter, but they live in it. So they might as well find a way to enjoy it! I like a cold beverage as much as the next person, but how many days can you spend sitting at a bar? Allow me the opportunity to demonstrate why you should embrace winter, not run from it.

GETTING OUTSIDE IS GOOD FOR YOU!

Kevin Versino is the General Manager of Rocktown Adventures, a specialty outdoor retailer and outfitter located in Rockford, IL. Rocktown Adventures has been helping people create memorable outdoor experiences since 2014.

Studies have shown that exposure to nature can reduce stress and anxiety. Adults should be outside for at least 2 hours per week according to people a lot smarter than I am. The outdoors provides a unique opportunity to achieve work-life balance.

IT IS GOOD TO TRY NEW THINGS. Taking on a new activity and learning the skills to be proficient breeds confidence that can be applied to other parts of your life, such as taking on a new project at work. Besides, it is good to challenge yourself, keep your mind active.

USE THE OUTDOORS AS YOUR GYM. I would much rather look at a snow covered forest than a pair of sweaty exercise pants. Don’t get me wrong, the gym has its place. I belong to one. But Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing using poles is a great total body activity. While there are some tips and tricks to snowshoeing, as long as you have normal balance and could put one foot in front of the other, you can snowshoe. Exercise in the fresh air versus sweating next to a stranger? Seems like a no brainer!

WINTER ACTIVITIES ARE GREAT SOCIAL ACTIVITIES. It is easy to get a group of friends or family together to create memorable outdoor experiences. For families, the outdoors provides endless entertainment options. Kids especially should be outside as it provides them an opportunity to problem solve and think creatively.

THAT FEELING OF EXHILARATION That feeling of exhilaration after a hike or ski. There is no better feeling than that you experience after heading out in winter. You know you did something good for yourself physically and mentally. You overcame the challenges winter weather presents. And you have earned that warm spot with a beverage in your hand. Which leads to….

AFTER-ACTIVITY BEERS You will never have a better tasting beer than after a nice ski or hike in winter. I am not sure what it is about cold weather and krausened beverages. But it is cold in Germany, so they must have known something!

LOOKING FOR RESOLUTION COMMUNITY MEMBERS SHARE THEIR HOPES AND DREAMS FOR 2024

"STEP INTO THE NEW YEAR WITH COURAGE AND CURIOSITY."

JIMMY BERGER “For 2024 I just want to be able to get out and enjoy the outdoors more. It doesn't matter how far I go and how hard the trails are, I just want to take advantage of my time better. And if I get to see old/make new friends along the way, even better!”

As the calendar turns the page to a new year, members of the Northology Adventures community are setting their sights on new horizons. In the spirit of anticipation and camaraderie, we reached out to these intrepid souls to hear about their adventure plans for the coming year and the wishes and hopes that accompany them. From summiting towering peaks to embarking on epic road trips, the adventure enthusiasts within this vibrant community share their aspirations, dreams, and the thrilling escapades that await them in 2024. Join us as we dive into the exhilarating tales and ambitious goals that shape the collective vision of those who live for the thrill of the unknown.

"IN THE NEW YEAR, FIND JOY IN THE JOURNEY."

WILLIAM HOFFMAN “”2024 Adventure wish. A week long tour of Wisconsin/UP out of way places. Like state/federal forests, camp along Mississippi River, Lake Michigan/Superior. Kettle Moraine areas, Drifters area, etc. Maybe some of the trans wis trail.”

MARTY SHUE “We've had a conflicting event on KOAR weekend ever since KOAR came on our radar of things to do, we've chosen the other event the past two years but it looks like the other event changed weekends for 2024 so we can actually do both! HURRAY!”

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS AS A ROAD MAP New Year's resolutions can have a profound impact on a person's attitude towards adventure and travel, often serving as powerful catalysts for positive change and exploration. As individuals set resolutions related to personal growth, wellness, or the pursuit of new experiences, the prospect of fulfilling these goals can instill a heightened sense of motivation and enthusiasm. Many resolutions involve stepping out of one's comfort zone, whether it's trying new activities, embracing a healthier lifestyle, or embarking on travel adventures to unfamiliar destinations. The act of making resolutions can create a mindset that encourages individuals to seek out novel experiences. Resolutions provide a roadmap for self-discovery and can inspire a renewed passion for exploring, encouraging people to actively seek out opportunities for adventure to accomplish their goals.

PAUL GUNNELS “We did 17 days as far as Devil’s tower (from Michigan) hitting 10 states. Longest trip so far and hoping we can do another long one as a family again in 2024!” (Paul and Bethany are the creators of Radio Chatter Game.)

TIM MATUSZAK “Definitely pumped to go to as many Northology events as possible! even Lindsey Rose Klug says she wants to do the woman’s off road event.”

"ADVENTURE IS THE BEST WAY TO LEARN."

JARED PACE “2024 Adventure list. I want to get over to the Manistee NF this winter if it ever snows lol. And I’m planning on taking a trip to Maine. I’d be cutting through Canada into New York and seeing Niagara Falls, then off to Mount Washington, and over to Acadia National Park. And I gotta get some fresh Lobster while I’m there. But if I win the Adventure Pass I will be doing much more adventuring. Pictured is me on top of Mount Arvon.”

TODD MOWRER “Camping more this year with Carol Mowrer and Riley, taking the kids and grandkids camping along with more time on the Mtn Bikes, Kayak, Moto’s and spending time with friends! Looking forward to Winter camping before we hit our busy season of Expo’s! Super excited about a moto trip from Mountain,Wi to Copper Harbor in August all off-road.”
