years of digital adventure Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I was skeptical that a digital magazine would be successful in this day and age of 15 second attention spans, but here we are. 89,667 impressions, 30,398 reads in 24 months, by 2,132 subscribers for an average of 1,200 + reads per issue. I want to thank Doug Campbell and Chris Offenwanger for encouraging me and telling me I needed to do this. Thanks to the many contributors and supporters. Thanks to Mandy Buehler for helping me grow as a graphic desinger. Thanks to my parents for giving me a sense of adventure and telling me I could do whatever I set my mind to. I also need to thank my husband, Chad, for putting up with me being glued to my macbook a lot of the time. A lot. What is next for this publication? Who can say. I would really like to share more of YOUR stories, let me know if you have one to share. I also want to help more businesses get in front of this community- if you have a product or a service that would be of benefit to the fine folks who read this magazine and are into adventure, let me know. See you on the trail. -Cindy Pope

SMASHDOGS WITH BRIE AND JAM Jeremiah Oschwald of Overland Pioneers launches a new video series to document and share delicious, elevated, simple dishes. The new Galley Sytstem on Jeremiah's Xventure trailer serves as the backdrop and workshop for this video series. Subscribe to Overland Pioneers on YouTube to see future meals and recipes.

"After our first use of the Partner Steel cook top we are extremely happy. The whole grate and burner assembly comes out as one piece and allows for easy cleanup of the entire unit. Can’t wait to cook some bougie meals on the trail."

SMASHDOGS WITH BRIE AND JAM ON PRETZEL BUNS 1. JUMBO/LARGE ALL BEEF FRANKS 2. UNSALTED BUTTER 3. PRETZEL BUNS 4. BRIE CHEESE 5. JAM (YOUR CHOICE) * 6. COARSE SALT Butter your griddle or flat top and lightly toast the pretzel buns on it. Using a heavy spatula, smash the hot dogs almost flat and let them get slightly crispy on your flat-top. Assemble the sandwich by spreading jam on the pretzel bun and sliced brie on top of the warm, smashed hot dogs. Sprinkle with coarse salt and watch them disappear. *we used strawberry-fig jam but any jam will do nicely.

HOW DO YOU CALL FOR

emergency Response when your phone is out of cell service range?

Until last week, I have never known anyone who had to use a satellite communications device in an emergency. Yes, it can be frustrating to find cell service in the woods, but that minor inconvenience can turn into a major frustration when emergency medical situations arise. After hearing about a friend's mishap, and the lengths his companions went to try and get cell service to call for help, I realized that it is way past time to get a device that can help contact the outside world in dire situations. Medical emergencies aren't the only situations that can warrant use of a satellite communication device, the recent flooding in Yellowstone and the numerous severe thunderstorms in the midwest lately have hammered home the need to be able to be in touch if and when the need arises.

I do not mean to bash the cell phone companies, but if you are in trouble, you need dedicated response. "...weak, inconsistent, or poor-quality signals can happen for a number of reasons. Averse weather, interference from building materials or terrain, distance from your nearest cell tower, or network overload can all contribute to poor signal," says WeBoost, a leader in cell boosting devices. For those considering adding a WeBoost, the caveat is that it requires a signal to boost in the first place. No signal at all? Nothing to boost (Copper Harbor, MI, anyone? AT&T seems to have good coverage in the northwoods of Wisconsin, for example, but their coverage map notes say "This map displays approximate outdoor coverage. Actual coverage may vary. Coverage isn't guaranteed and is subject to change without notice (italics, mine.)

Garmin products are available from New Holland Overland Co. So back to the personal satellite communication options. There are a number of satellite communication devices on the market, and the most popular one in circles we travel in seems to be the Garmin Inreach. "The Garmin inReach Mini is an ideal ultracompact bidirectional communication device when size and weight really matter. It works using the Iridium satellite network, which guarantees coverage from any corner of the planet. It allows you to send and receive messages in SMS format, record and share your trip in real time and, in the case of emergency, send a message from SOS to GEOS, the monitoring and rescue agency available 24 hours a day," says the Garmin website.

Verizon coverage map from Public Service Commission of Wisconsin | Wisconsin Broadband Office

This is not an ad or a plug for Garmin, specifically, there are many devices out there. The goal of this article is to get you thinking about taking the step to be able to communicate in an emergency. Please join the conversation about satellite devices and personal stories and experiences in our discussions in our Northology Adventures facebook group to learn more or share your advice or insights.

" While I haven't done many long distance rides or moto-overlanding I do put on a few miles around the UP. I currently have 3 bikes, a BMW F650GS, a Honda XR250, and a Honda Ruckus. Each bike serves a distinctly different purpose, the BMW for long distance comfort, the XR250 for ripping around and single track, and the Ruckus for cruising around locally. BIG BRUTUS STANDS TALL OVER

BIG IRON OVERLAND RALLY

Above and Beyond Big Brutus rises above the Kansas plains and looms large on the horizon, growing ever taller as you approach. You can see it for miles above the tree-lined ditches that the strip mining operation left behind. Big Iron Overland Rally is a nod to the history of the area and a lifeline to Big Brutus's future. Chris Holloway brings the vendor elements of the MOORE Expo to an overland music festival to benefit a local community cause. Friends and fans from all over the country converged on West Mineral, KS in June to camp, listen to some great music and shop and mingle with the vendors and exhibitors supporting the show in the shadow of Big Brutus.

"Big Brutus is the nickname of the Bucyrus-Erie model 1850-B electric shovel, which was the second largest of its type in operation in the 1960s and 1970s. Big Brutus is the centerpiece of a mining museum in West Mineral, Kansas where it was used in coal strip mining operations." -wiki

"The Big Iron Overland Rally was an incredible success. We are always working towards creating events that are WIN-WIN-WIN and this one meets those marks for all involved. We were able to go #aboveandbeyond this year in our fund raising initiative, this year we will present Big Brutus, Inc a donation of $14,200.00 to help preserve this historic landmark! The MidlandUSA stage was packed with top original artists from the #midwest. Our QuietKat, Ebike provided staff with rapid transportation to support operations. Our attendees enjoyed over 10 hours of free education provided by Aaron Paris with Switchback Outdoor Safety. Thank you to all who participated." - Chris Holloway

OUT WEST EDITION

Packing for Adventure U.P. Jeeping Excuse the dust

I've done a few good camping adventures and road trips over the years and I've found a few different ways of packing that work for me Depending on where I'm going, what I'm driving, and who I'm going with, the key factor is always be organized! Being organized doesn't necessarily mean spending lots of money on "overlanding" things. Drawer systems are a good way to stay organized but they also add weight and can waste a lot of space. The main reason I don't use a drawer system is because I transfer my stuff between different vehicles and campers so I typically use different size totes that always stay packed. As I write this I've been on the road since mid January living out of the Jeep Every so often you just need to do a full reset to keep things organized. I thought I'd show

Being organized doesn't necessarily mean spending lots of money on "overlanding" things. off what is currently working for me and what's not… To start off I built a simple 2 piece platform in the back of the Jeep. The rear platform fits behind the rear seats and stays in the Jeep full time. The rear platform still allows access to the factory storage area where I keep a tarp and towing equipment. The 2nd piece replaces the 60 part of the 60/40 rear bench seat.

Basically this tote is one massive junk drawer, if it's not in here you don't need it. The main piece of my kit, which pretty much always goes with me anywhere I go, is my tool tote. This tote holds all of the misc tools that don't fit in my Husky tool kit. Bottle jack with wheel chocks Breaker bar and torque wrench Jumper cables Misc nuts & bolts, both random and specific to this Jeep Different size zip ties Extra ratchet straps and bungee cords Torx bits, regular, inverted, and security Axle nut socket Various pliers and vice grips Volt meter, misc electrical and fuses Anti seize, wd40, and loc-tite (1) 2"x6"x12" pine board Tire plug kit Basically this tote is one massive junk drawer, if it's not in here you don't need it.

So many tools... Another tool that's always with me is this smittybilt 12v air compressor. It has enough power to seat a bead and it will air up a 35" tire from 15 to 32 psi in about a minute. Included but not pictured is a rapid tire deflation tool for airing down. Also seen here is my multi use pine board.

And just to show why I bring so many tools… After traveling 150 miles of the Mojave road and several days in Death Valley, my driver's side front wheel bearing finally had enough. I limped the Jeep 80 miles to the nearest auto parts store and replaced the bearing assembly in the parking lot. An hour and a half later I was back on the road!

The next biggest piece is my mess kit, this tote changes a bit depending on my mission. Currently it contains a few emergency MREs for when I'm too lazy to cook, a large cast iron pan, an MSR aluminum pan kit, utensils, spices, zip lock bags, various other misc items, and a one burner stove. The kitchen/pantry area is located below the hinged sleeping platform, which is all covered in the finest black rug I could find at Walmart. I'm using an Iceco JP40 fridge with the Secop (danfoss) compressor, which came with a 5 year warranty on the compressor. So far it's been a great purchase, definitely moving to a fridge has been a game changer. Although now I'm the guy wandering around asking people for 3 large ice cubes for my drink.

On the drivers side of my 40/60 rear seat is my multi purpose area. It’s my lounging area, office desk, changing room, and sleeping area access. I originally built the sleeping platform across both rear seats, which gave me a ton more storage space but made it much harder to get into the "bed". With the "40" seat still there I can just roll up into bed pretty easy.

...the very cozy master bedroom ... all the comforts of home are here! And this is the very cozy master bedroom. I'm using a 3" foam pad from an old camper as a bed along with a Coleman sleeping bag, 2 fleece blankets, and a memory foam pillow. All the comforts of home are here! And next is my wardrobe closet… I'm utilizing the front passenger seat for storing clothing while the foot well keeps things like my laptop, camera bag, and whatever misc things I jam down in there.

And lastly for the exterior of the Jeep I went with a Rhino rack backbone system paired with their large Pioneer platform. It's a mostly well made system, I had some quality issues with a few pieces, but the manufacturer sent replacements fairly quickly. I'm also using the newer ARB awning with a built in LED strip that has a few different color and brightness settings. To go with the awning, I also have an ARB Touring screen room. I haven't used the awning much, just a few times mainly to use the light for making dinner. On a few windy nights I did put up the screen room to have a place out of the wind so I could cook dinner. I think back home in Michigan this tight mesh screen room will come in handy when trying to escape the never ending mosquitoes and no-see-ums.

don't look back BY STEVE BOTSORD The year was 1980 and Mom and Dad (more Dad than Mom LOL) bought two 1968 Honda Z50s from my cousins. One red, one blue. My sister (7 at the time) didn't really want to ride yet, she didn't start until she was about 9 but I wanted to right away. I remember it like it was yesterday. Gold metal flake helmet, brown knit jersey gloves and an appetite for excitement! I rode the wheels off that bike. When I was 11 my dad spotted a 1973 Yamaha DT175 on the side of the road for sale. It came home with him about a week later. We didn't have money back then, I have NO CLUE how he could have afforded that no matter how good the deal was. But he bought it for me. It was way too big for me, but I couldn't let that be known. Once again, I rode the wheels off that bike. Growing up in the sticks in Michigan meant there were trails, and two tracks for decades. And I rode them all. Fast forward and when I was 15 we moved to Milwaukee. No more dirt bikes. At 16 my first vehicle was a 1983 Honda XL250R. I rode it to high school until the snow flew, then rode for another week or so. Over the next 30-some years I've owned countless motorcycles. In 2021 I bought a 2017 Kawasaki KLR650 which led me to explore dirt roads again. In September of 2021 I attended KOAR and participated in the KOAR MOTO event on the KLR. This made me crave more off-road two wheeled action. So here now at 47 years old, I've purchased a DRZ400 dual sport and just recently purchased a CRF110 for my 9 year old son to ride. The second half of my life is beginning to look like a reboot of the first half. There's a cheesy saying about four wheels moving the body and two wheels moving the soul. It may be cheesy but it's true. Motorcycles do something to you, they change you. They make you focus on the world in a way you'll never do behind the big windshield of a car or truck. You smell things you wouldn't smell in your car. You can feel the slightest temperature and humidity changes instantly. Smell the morning dew, hear the frogs, feel nature. It's not easy to describe to someone who hasn't experienced it, but that old adage is true. It moves my soul. And my soul is happy.

All forward!!! We had such a great time at the Summer Adventure Camp event we hosted in partnership with True North Outpost. Big thanks to all who came out to camp, bike, hike, ride and hit the rapids with us! Attendee Nate Goodwin gives us an idea of what the rafting was like...

"Such good memories from this weekend. Another successful trip in the TC and we went white water rafting not 2 hours from my door. So come with me and I'll tell you how it went. After grabbing gear and a good safety brief we take a few pictures and get assigned guides. We drew this dude that looked like if Joe Dirt was a power lifter and we get underway. After a bit of swimming and some intense training on grabbing people out of the water we stare down a class 4 rapid and you are just along for the ride. All we heard was ALL FORWARD and the loud roar of the water. It went so fast and luckily we hiked back up to get a second go at it. You barely know the people you are with yet somehow you are perfectly fine with the chaos of what comes next. Thank you Joe for putting up with us and pulling us though."

THE ANGRY CHILD OF A DOWNHILL MOUNTAIN BIKE AND A DIRT BIKE. The Sur-Ron X eDirtbike by Jeremiah Oschwald Overland Pioneers This article first appeared in the August, 2020 issue of Northology Adventures

WE HIT A MASSIVE WASHOUT. We are 5 miles into a narrow technical trail system that I have only seen on Gaia Maps while planning our route. The last turn-around is a mile back and we’re pulling a trailer. So we back the trailer as far to one side of the trail as possible. Lock the trailer brakes. Detach the trailer. Do an Austin Powers 50 point turn around in the Jeep. Spin the trailer around. Reconnect and try to find another route. Or... We attach our Garmin In-Reach Mini, iPhone with Gaia Maps and Rocky Talkie to the handlebars of our Sur-Ron X eBike (with an electric chainsaw in our backpack for good measure) and head down the trail leaving the Jeep and trailer hanging back a mile or two while we scout ahead. At the very least if you get stuck and exhaust every recovery option you can shoot back to the trail for assistance.

The trails on the East coast get pretty narrow, especially in the Appalachian region.

As soon as we read an article about the top 10 eDirt Bikes the idea of purchasing a scouting bike came to mind. We did quite a bit of research before purchasing the Sur-Ron X and its definitely the best bang for the buck. At $3600 the features you get are amazing and comparable to its closest competitors who range in price starting at 5k and up. The Sur-Ron X is the next evolution in eco-friendly off-road exploration. It’s the angry child of a downhill mountain bike and a dirt bike.

WHAT CAN AN EDIRT BIKE DO FOR THE OVERLANDING COMMUNITY? With the powerful Sur-Ron you can go way off the beaten path and explore even more destinations your rig just can’t make it to. It’s not an alternative to a main rig, just another tool in the box to make your adventures more diverse. It’s also a good way to dip your toes into the ADV bike world.

INSTANT TORQUE The Electric trucks coming out have made a big splash in the overland world but have had a bit of grief and kickback. Charging being the biggest concern. With a decent Overland power system (dual or large battery) and a power inverter you can charge the Sur-Ron X while on the move or at basecamp. It only takes 3 hours to charge with a 10-amp 600-watt charger (included.) It has instant torque from the internal permanent magnet motor powered by a gigantic 60v 32ah battery pack and has a 2stage reduction drive (a primary 5mm gates belt connected by a jack shaft that’s concentric with the swing arm pivot so there are no chain slop issues.) Blah, blah, blah, It’s well designed! You can also remove the battery taking additional tongue weight off your hitch while transporting. Another cool feature is regenerative charging when coasting in Sport mode. It puts a charge back in the battery when letting off the throttle and traveling at least 8 mph. The bike is so quiet that we can hear our chase vehicle driver through the Rocky Talkie. It even has a USB port for charging your phone or other devices while out. Rough terrain is also not an issue with a suspension that travels 8” front and rear. You can even install a pedal kit. All of this packed into a 110-pound bike. This is the bike experience every kid has in mind while racing his friends around a homemade dirt track! These bikes are shipped limited to 20 mph and 750 W to make them road legal in most states. With a five-minute modification you can take all of the limits off the bike to make it power and speed unlimited and illegal for road use in most states. Some people have even had luck getting plates for road use at full power.

ADVENTURES TO REMEMBER

BOONDOCKADVENTURECOMPANY,COM TOIVOLA, MI

Another benefit to an eDirt bike is that while cursing down the trail all you hear is a slight whine of the motor, so disturbing nature or other campers will be kept to a minimum. Plus the Sur-Ron X has about the same footprint as a regular mountain bike, so treading lightly isn’t a worry. Oh, and what a fun way of exploring an area once camp is set up! It has a decent stock headlight so take a night ride to the top of a near-by mountain and get some beautiful long exposure shots. Find that waterfall 3 miles up a singletrack trail, or head into town for some last-minute supplies without breaking camp. The digital display shows the speed and an odometer. It also comes with safety sensors that cut the motor’s power while breaking and after the bike has been laid over on its side. So when you pick it back up by the throttle it won’t run off on you.

This powerful eDirt bike can beat a 50cc Honda and compete with 110cc’s. It has okay stock disk brakes. At 6’3”, I have gotten 40 hard miles out of it before needing to charge. You could complete the 65-mile scenic Alpine Loop with 2 charges. This bike is a dream for people who like to customize their bikes. From sprockets to belt drives, lighting and wheels, to power systems and programming, the mods are endless. Overall, it’s an extremely well-engineered machine that has endless fun and practical uses. Is this bike for you? The Sur-Ron is targeted toward beginners to intermediate riders, which we are. So if we can jump on this thing and immediately have a blast so can you! The Sur-Ron X can be purchased through Luna Cycles out of California, their US distributor.
