Cleanup and campout around a trail cleanup in the Keweenaw
For the first time (?) in our history, I took a day off Or rather the weekend The magazine was ready to go on Thursday but I had an event to host and foolishly thought I could do the little last-minute things that get the magazine from my computer to your inbox in the midst of running an event for our Midwest Women’s Offroad Weekend Instead, I made the executive decision to stay in the moment and give full attention to having the best time with this lovely group of ladies Boss Cindy said “B.S., get it done.” Event planner Cindy said if you stay up til 3 am to do that, you will be useless the rest of the event.” Decision made, so here we are!
In this issue you will see a preview of a recap for that women ’ s event, which we will share the full story in our July issue Inside you will also find a great overview of Midland USA comms for offroad and overlanding, a great snapshot of raft guide training, some wonderful captures from our community of the recent northern lights mega-show, weather preparedness for camping and recap of the KORC cleanup, campout and our tour of the Delaware Mine.
I also encourage you to participate in our Northology Community on Facebook, and if you have an adventure story to share, let us know You can submit articles for review right on our website
As always, let us know if you have a story to share in words or photos, or want to get your message in front of this community

STOP all outdoor activities and enact your plan for severe weather saftey.
Camping and attending outdoor festivals can be wonderful experiences, but severe weather and other outdoor disasters can pose significant risks. Here is some advice for preparedness, preparation and survival in such situations
Check the Weather Forecast:
Regularly monitor weather forecasts before and during your trip Use reliable weather apps or websites to stay updated on potential severe weather conditions
Know the Terrain:
Familiarize yourself with the area ’ s geography and potential hazards, such as flood zones, high ground, and shelter locations
Create an Emergency Plan:
Establish a plan for what to do in case of various emergencies (thunderstorms, tornadoes, floods) Ensure all group members are aware of the plan and know the meeting points and communication methods
Pack an Emergency Kit:
Include items such as a first aid kit, flashlight, extra batteries, multi-tool, portable weather radio, water purification tablets, non-perishable food, and a whistle
Communication:
Ensure you have a way to communicate with the outside world. Cell phones with backup batteries, walkie-talkies, or satellite communicators & phones can be invaluable
Set Up Wisely:
Pitch your tent on high ground, away from rivers and streams that could flood Avoid setting up under large trees or in open fields that could be dangerous during storms.
Identify Shelter Locations:
Locate the nearest permanent shelters or sturdy buildings as soon as you arrive at the campsite or festival
Stay Informed:
Continuously monitor weather updates and alerts Pay attention to announcements from festival organizers or park rangers
General Tips
Thunderstorms:
Seek shelter in a sturdy building or a vehicle with the windows closed
Avoid tall objects, open fields, and bodies of water
If caught in the open, crouch low to the ground, minimizing contact with it (the "lightning crouch").
Tornadoes:
Move to a permanent building if possible
If no shelter is available, lie flat in a low spot (ditch) and cover your head
Do not stay in a tent, vehicle, or under bridges/overpasses
Floods:
Move to higher ground immediately
Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters
Stay informed about rising water levels and have an evacuation route planned
Extreme Heat:
Stay hydrated and take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas
Wear light, loose-fitting clothing and use sunscreen. Recognize signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke and know how to treat them
Assess and Communicate:
Check on the well-being of your group members and communicate your status to family or authorities if needed.
Stay Put or Move Cautiously:
If the area is unsafe, move to a safer location following your emergency plan If you must stay, ensure you have access to food, water, and shelter
Report Emergencies:
Inform local authorities of any emergencies, injuries, or hazards
Stay Calm: Keeping a level head can help you think clearly and make better decisions during emergencies
Be Resourceful: Use available resources wisely and adapt to the situation as it evolves
Learn Basic Survival Skills: Knowing how to purify water, start a fire, build a shelter, and administer first aid can be life-saving
Being prepared and informed can significantly increase your safety and survival chances in severe weather and outdoor disaster situations

Can you provide an overview of the GMRS radios specifically designed for off-roading that Midland Radio Corp offers? What sets them apart from other models?
GMRS two-way radios have become the standard for communication while off-roading Midland recommends pairing a GMRS walkie talkie with a GMRS vehicle radio- like Midland’s MicroMobiles
Midland offers a wide range of GMRS walkie talkies such as the GXT67 Pro, Midland’s newest product. It’s a 5-Watt handheld that brings impressive range and an IP67 waterproof and dustproof rating This is the most powerful walkie talkie Midland offers. The GXT1000VP4, the leading consumer walkie talkie in the country, packs a punch with its GMRS radio range and NOAA Weather Radio
Midland’s MicroMobiles offer a wide range of power depending on the model The MXT105 MicroMobile Two-Way Radio is a great starter radio, bringing 5 Watts to adventurers. Midland’s MXT115 is 15 Watts of power, with all the controls on the radio unit and a DC adapter for easy installation Similarly, the MXT275 is 15 Watts of power, but it features a Fully-Integrated Control Microphonemeaning all the controls are on the microphone so the radio unit can be stashed away to save dashboard space The MXT500 and MXT575 both bring 50 Watts of power, the maximum allowed by law. The MXT500 is waterproof with all the controls on the head unit, while the MXT575 features the Fully-Integrated Control Microphone for a clean installation in any rig.
Midland’s GMRS two-way radios bring quality communication off-roaders can count on With clear, crisp communication, these two-way radios are easy to use so off-roaders don’t have to be intimidated
How does Midland Radio Corp ensure that their GMRS radios meet the unique needs and challenges of off-roading enthusiasts, such as rugged terrain, long-range communication, and weather resistance?
Midland’s GMRS radios are known for their quality and performance, no matter where adventure takes their users. By utilizing a MicroMobile in the vehicle and a walkie talkie for spotting and recovery, off-roaders are able to tackle the toughest of terrain along their adventures
Because Midland’s MXT500 and MXT575 bring 50 Watts of power, the most allowed by law, off-roaders can trust they’re getting clear communication that’s pushing the limits if they have one of these units in their rigs. By pairing those with the right antenna and utilizing a repeater, users will unlock maximum two-way radio range for communication across further distances
Midland’s GMRS two-way radios also come packed with various features that perform in the toughest of environments, such as IP67 waterproof and dustproof ratings, water resistance, NOAA Weather Radio, and more.
Could you discuss any special features or technologies incorporated into Midland's GMRS radios that cater specifically to off-road and overlanding activities?
Midland’s MXT275 and MXT575 MicroMobiles both feature the Fully-Integrated Control Microphones All the controls are on the microphone instead of the radio head unit so offroaders can hide their unit away, only mounting the microphone This saves a significant amount of dashboard space, leaving more room for other necessary gadgets.
With the exception of the MXT105, all of Midland’s MicroMobiles are repeater capable Because these powerful mobile units have this capability, users can program them to the nearest repeater to unleash maximum two-way radio range This gives off-roaders the ability to communicate across further distances
In what ways does Midland Radio Corp support off-road and overlanding expos and events? Do you sponsor any particular events or organizations within this community?
Midland strives to develop and maintain strong relationships with its customers Trade shows and/or expos are a great way for the brand to communicate with users in person to help answer radio questions, find new users the best radio, and get product feedback.
For years, Midland has been a title sponsor of MOORE Expo. Consistently, you can find Midland at other shows such as Overland Expo West, Overland Expo East, and Great Smoky Mountain Jeep Invasion
The company loves coming face to face with those using the products out on the trails! Midland also prioritizes the sponsorship of organizations and off-road parks across the country For example, Midland is the official Communications Sponsor of MERUS Adventure Park in the Palo Duro Canyon of Texas Midland also supports organizations like Lady Jeepers, Tread Lightly!, and more
How does Midland engage with off-roading enthusiasts to gather feedback and improve their GMRS radio products? Are there specific channels or platforms through which customers can provide input?
Midland is in constant contact with customers and appreciates their feedback. An easy way to share feedback with the brand is through social media- send a direct message! The company also engages with its customers at the largest off-road and overlanding expos throughout the country. Customers can also reach out with feedback through support@midlandusa.com!
Can you share any success stories or testimonials from offroaders who have used Midland's GMRS radios in challenging off-road environments?
April Russell, otherwise known as Jeep Daisy, always uses her Midlands when she’s out on the trails. She uses the MXT575 with the Ghost Antenna or the Grand Vista antenna She shares how she uses her Midland GMRS radios while off-roading
What future developments or enhancements can we expect to see in Midland's GMRS radio lineup for off-roading enthusiasts? Are there any upcoming products or features on the horizon?
Midland just launched the GXT67! It’s Midland’s first-ever repeater-capable two-way radio It also features an impressive 5 Watts of power, making it Midland’s most powerful walkie talkie Not to mention, it also has an IP67 waterproof and dustproof rating, plus an intuitive menu interface By itself or paired with a MicroMobile, this handheld isn’t your everyday walkie talkie. It’s the handheld powerhouse, a must-have item for the trail!
How does Midland Radio Corp envision the role of GMRS radios evolving within the off-road and overlanding community in the coming years?
Midland has seen GMRS become the standard in two-way radio communication within the off-road and overlanding community over the last several years.
In the coming years, Midland envisions GMRS’s role to only grow within these communities! It is a goal for even more off-road groups, parks, and groups to make the switch as it brings communication riders can count on
With its strong reputation amongst the off-road and overlanding communities, Midland plans to continue to strengthen its relationships with customers and develop products that will only enhance their communication experience on the trails!
Author BioCaileigh Peterson is the PR and Content Specialist for Midland having been with the company for over three years
An avid writer and former journalist, Caileigh enjoys telling the stories of Midland customers who rely on the company ’ s products for safety and connection Often traveling to expos on behalf of Midland, she relishes the relationships she’s developed with the community.
In her spare time, Caileigh enjoys exercising, particularly running and spending time with her Boston Terrier, Delta.

The aurora display on May 10 11, 2024, was an extraordinary event triggered by a significant geomagnetic storm, the most intense in over two decades This storm was caused by a series of strong solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from a massive sunspot named AR3664, which is approximately 16 times the diameter of Earth (livescience com) (Global News) This powerful geomagnetic activity resulted in auroras being visible much farther south than usual Stunning displays were seen across North America, Europe, and even as far south as Florida and Arizona (Space com) (Universe Today) In the UK, the auroras were visible from places like Nottingham and Somerset, which rarely experience such phenomena (livescience com) (Space com) In the Southern Hemisphere, the aurora australis was visible further north than usual, including over Lake Ellesmere near Christchurch, New Zealand (Space com)
The auroras displayed a range of vibrant colors, including green, red, pink, and purple, depending on the gases excited in Earth's atmosphere by the incoming solar particles (livescience com) (Global News) Photos from various locations captured breathtaking scenes, such as the Northern Lights over Hulunbuir in Inner Mongolia, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, and Lake Mendota in Madison, Wisconsin (livescience com) (Global News)
This geomagnetic storm also posed some risks to satellite communications and power grids, but no significant disruptions were reported The storm's strength was unusual, making it a memorable event for both seasoned aurora chasers and those witnessing it for the first time (Space com) (Global News)

photos by Todd MowrerThis month we have a special question in partnership with Tread Lightly! We went to the Northology Community on Facebook this month to ask a question not from our Radio Chatter Game, but maybe in a future version!
“Just say no to the brosplash.” - Cindy
“Thaw is raw, stay off the trails.” - Ben
“If it looks sketch, don't do it.” - Shawn
Shawn warns of reliance on Google Maps because it can be misleading or inaccurate. Instead, they recommend using Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUM).
Cindy always researches areas ahead of time to know where she has legal access and respects closed gates and areas off-limits to her specific vehicle.
Mark reminds to just pop it in 4wd if you notice you are doing damage in 2wd.
Paul reminded everyone that the splash-back when going fast through water/mud holes can cause a lot of erosion.
Cory said they make sure to stay on the designated trails and try real hard not to dig up the area with their tires.
