EPIC DESTINATIONS
What makes a location bucket-list worthy?
When you hear the term “epic destination,” what comes to mind? Does the midwest even have epic destinations? Are there places here worthy of being on a “bucket list?” Are we so used to the places around us that we look past the beauty around us for greener pastures? Everyone has their own take on the subject, but generally, an epic destination possesses the following qualities:
Natural Beauty: Epic destinations often boast stunning natural landscapes, including rugged mountains, pristine beaches, lush forests, dramatic waterfalls, or other breathtaking features The more of these features, the more epic the location
Uniqueness: Epic destinations offer something unique or extraordinary that sets them apart from other places This could be a natural wonder, such as the Grand Canyon or the The Wave, or a cultural landmark, like ancient petroglyps or pictograms, or a monument or memorial
Adventure Opportunities: Epic destinations provide opportunities for adventure and exploration, whether it's hiking through remote wilderness areas, paddling crystal-clear waters, exploring ancient ruins, or ghost towns and old mines
Cultural Richness: Epic destinations often have a rich cultural heritage, including historical sites, vibrant traditions, and diverse cuisine Immersing oneself in the local culture adds depth and meaning to the travel experience
Sense of Discovery: Epic destinations evoke a sense of discovery and wonder, encouraging travelers to step out of their comfort zones and explore new horizons This could involve uncovering hidden gems, discovering off-the-beatenpath attractions, or trying something new
Accessibility: Some epic destinations may be remote or difficult to reach, and although most folks probably think locations should still be accessible to be epic, adventure travelers may feel that the more remote and difficult it is to find or get there, the more epic it is
Memorable Experiences: Epic destinations leave a lasting impression on travelers, creating memories that will be cherished for a lifetime. Whether it's watching the sunrise over a majestic landscape, interacting with local communities, or engaging in thrilling activities, epic destinations offer experiences that resonate deeply with visitors

MINNESOTA’S ARROWHEAD
Between the North Shore and the Boundary Waters
LIVING THE LIFE IN THE SUPERIOR NATIONAL FOREST
By Sarah Lucy
I stared at the cell phone sitting on my desk He’s not responding He probably thinks it’s a terrible idea, and is trying to figure out how to say no We weren’t planning to camp this weekend- do we even have enough food to make that work? We don't have reservations, can we even find a campsite? It’s 10:00 on a Friday morning, and I’m at the office today until at least 3. Maybe it is a terrible idea- a couple days before we had hosted the 4th of July weekend at our house, and heaven knows we could all use a relaxed weekend at home Maybe not this weekend, I think My phone screen lights up “What time could you be home by?”
Seven hours later, I’m standing in the front yard, hurriedly running through the last-minute packing list in my head one more time while I try to convince Mickey, our dog, to go pee before we hit the road. He’s excitedly running around the loaded truck and trailer looking for an open door, pausing every so often to look at me as if I’m being the uncooperative one here I finally give in and open the door, where he quickly jumps up and settles in- not sure of where we're going but content that wherever it is, he's along
EPIC DESTINATIONS
To be honest, the humans in charge of the trip aren't entirely sure where we're going either.
To be honest, the humans in charge of the trip aren't entirely sure where we're going either It’s a less-hot-than normal July weekend, and in typical fashion, we decided on Friday morning that a camping trip that weekend was the way to celebrate our upcoming anniversary We set our sights on Minnesota’s North Shore, famous for its beautiful shoreline- and fully booked (and busy) state parks. Luckily, my recent mapstalking had identified several firstcome-first-serve Forest Service campgrounds inland from the shore, all of which were on lakes We packed up everything we would need to camp, fly fish, stand-up paddleboard, and hike, then decided we’d figure out what we were doing once we got there We spent the drive up the interstate talking about which campgrounds we wanted to check for openings first, and what we wanted to do the most. Finally selecting an area outside of Finland that had several small campgrounds close together, we figured our chances of finding a campsite in this area were decent- the best we could hope for at the last minute on a summer weekend.
The sky spit rain as we drove through Duluth and up the shore We made one last stop in Two Harbors before a weekend where we knew we wouldn’t see any more gas stations, and if we were lucky, not even any paved roads Shortly after, we turned off the pavement onto a wide, well graded dirt road It’s still raining, but we can see glimmers of a rainbow through the trees. Rounding the first corner, the rainbow comes down into the road at the end of the straight stretch It’s a moment too good to pass, and we sit in the middle of the road and watch as the rainbow slowly grows brighter, and then fades as the rain goes from a drizzle to intermittent After basking in its beauty for a while, we set off to find the night’s campsite We were hightailing it to the first campground we had marked when a side road caught both our eyes. From the treetops, we could tell there was a clearing at the top of the short hill immediately off the road We backtracked to investigate, and found an old logging landing- but large enough, relatively flat, and secluded. In between swatting ravenous
mosquitoes, we doused eve spray, quickly leveled the set up the rooftop tent be into its somehow mostly m interior Once inside, we each other, questioning t decisions Let’s go camp The bugs won’t be that b Mickey turned circles on h corner of the tent then f only to get up and spin cir direction before once aga and giving us a side-eye angry bird protested our harsh call breaking the s night. We swatted rouge m we settled into our sl hopeful that tomorrow wou rain, and fewer mosquitoes
The next morning we aw sunshine, which drove o mosquitoes and angry bird of dusk the night before some wildflowers, but now we could see that the adjacent clearing was covered in wildflowers- daisies, Indian paintbrush, trefoil, clover, and even wild strawberries carpeted the clearing. Breakfast made and solar panels facing the sun, we settled into our camp chairs and contemplated what to do with our day We finally decided that today would be an exploring day. After lazily finishing breakfast and coffee, finally feeling ready to take on the day, we cleaned up camp and set off to explore the backcountry Two areas in Minnesota’s Arrowhead region, which is roughly defined as the area between Lake Superior and the Canadian border, get most of the glory- the North Shore of Lake Superior, and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness But between them lies millions of acres of the Superior National Forest Here there are lakes to explore- not as pristine as those in the Boundary Waters, but much easier to access There are miles of gravel roads, old logging landings, and streams to explore The famous lakeshore is a short drive over the ridge of the Sawtooth Mountains These mountains may look like molehills next to the Rockies or or even Appalachians, but for those of us in Minnesota, they are big enough to be called mountains nonetheless This area
behind the mountain ridge sees many fewer visitors than the busy areas along Minnesota Highway 61, and we spent the next several hours running back roads checking out small forest service campgrounds, all of which had available campsites. Venturing farther upriver in search of a possible dispersed campsite, we stumbled across a historic site from the days when the road we now traveled on was a railroad grade Next to it, a large sign marked the location of a Civilian Conservation Corps camp. We felt like we were in the middle of nowhere now, it was hard to imagine how remote this area would have been in the 1930s when the camp was developed
A much-delayed lunch was made on the tailgate next to a 3-sided building that serves as a warming shelter for the 146 mile snowmobile trail that is groomed from Duluth all the way to Grand Marais each winter This day, it provided a welcome area to pull off of the road and stretch our legs A narrow footpath through the woods led to the Temperance River, where the summer's low water levels allowed enough rocks to protrude that we could rock-hop our way toward the middle of the river to

view the wooden bridge just downstream. By now, it was late afternoon, and we turned the truck back toward camp and started discussing our options for the night Despite the enjoyable morning in the wildflowers, last night’s clouds of mosquitoes and angry resident avian population weighed on our minds We decided that to fully enjoy the nice meal we had planned (it was our anniversary after all,) we would move to one of the campgrounds we had found earlier in the day.
The new campsite was barely 5 miles up the road from the previous night’s, but felt like a world away Instead of a small clearing surrounded by tall deciduous trees, our new campsite was a large field with the picnic table and fire ring tucked onto a small rise next to the rows of pines separating us from the adjacent campsite A gentle breeze kept the mosquitoes out of camp and allowed us to enjoy all of the long northern Minnesota summer evening with only normal amounts of bug spray We pulled out camp chairs and the bottle of wine we had saved for that night, enjoying each other’s company as dinner sizzled on the camp stove Dragonflies buzzed around camp, no doubt snacking on the few mosquitoes that were around A leisurely dinner completed, we wandered down to the boat launch at the far end of the campground, pausing on our way to talk to a father and his young son setting up camp with whom our dog made instant friends Standing on the dock, we watched the sunset over the calm water until once again the mosquitoes chased us back to our open field campsite, and darkness chased us into our tent for the night.
Sunday morning was well underway by the time we emerged from the tent, having not passed on the chance for Mickey snuggles We took our time making breakfast and cleaning up camp, knowing we were headed home today and wanting to make the trip last as long as we could. One more walk down to the boat landing had us debating pumping up the inflatable paddle boards, the lake's surface calm except for little ripples from the wind This lake promised many small bays to explore and good protection from the wind, but we ultimately decided that was an adventure for another day before loading the last of the gear into the trailer and hooking up to the truck Getting home was the only thing on today’s agenda, and we had all day to do it. We ventured down a series of dirt roads checking out possible campsites and streams that might hold trout, ultimately striking out on both counts before making our way back to highway 61. Pointing the truck southward, to the soundtrack of Mickey happily snoring in the backseat, we marveled at the beauty of the big lake and soaked in the time together and the contentment of another weekend spent outdoors

OVERLAND AND WATER, AN EPIC INTERNATIONAL JOURNEY
By Jeremiah Oschwald
Join us on our overland journey to Canada's Newfoundland Island We spent three weeks July 2023 camping and traveling to some of the most beautiful places around the country We spent 6 months mapping and planning for this trip, packing in as much adventure as we could
Newfoundland is a large island situated off the eastern coast of the North American mainland and the western part of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, referred to as Labrador The island contains 29 percent of the province's land area Despite this, it contains over 60% of the province's population The island is separated from the Labrador Peninsula by the Strait of Belle Isle and from Cape Breton Island by the Cabot Strait It blocks the mouth of the Saint Lawrence River, creating the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, the world's largest estuary With an area of 108,860 square kilometres (42,031 sq mi,) Newfoundland is the world's 16th-largest island, Canada's fourth-largest island, and the largest Canadian island outside the North - Wikipedia

EPIC MIDWEST HIKING
Epic hikes lead to epic views
OVERLAND AND WATER, AN EPIC INTERNATIONAL JOURNEY
Some view you gotta earn with your feet Hiking is like overlanding, in that you have to be self-sufficient for a time and plan for contingencies and emergencies I joke that overlanding is just hiking by car, but there are some destinations that require a journey on foot In the end, overlanding is part of the journey that gets you to more epic, backwoods experiences
Hiking and overlanding share similar aspects of self-sufficiency and preparation, yet each offers its own unique experience. While hiking allows you to immerse yourself in the beauty of nature by traversing trails on foot, overlanding provides the opportunity to explore remote locations using a vehicle as your mode of transportation
Both activities require careful planning and consideration for unexpected situations that may arise Whether you are trekking through rugged terrain on foot or navigating off-road trails in a vehicle, being prepared for emergencies is essential. Remember, the journey is not just about reaching your destination but also about embracing the adventure along the way
EPIC DESTINATIONS

It’s the dead of winter in the cold north Gray skies are constant and adding windshield washer fluid to your truck is all too common Winter camping is an acquired skill and want, one necessitating specific gear and the right attitude to tackle Plans are thin and the day in, day out drags on What is one to do if you are not into skiing snow shoeing or fat biking during the down months?
Many things bring us to this hobby we call “overlanding” The sense of adventure, a cool vehicle, seeing new sights, having unique experiences For me, I most certainly focused on having unique experiences in and around cool vehicles Around 10 years ago some of my friends and I took a gamble during the boring drab of winter, and it changed everything
Three quarters of the way up the lower peninsula of Michigan you can find the city of Gaylord. Just east of that you have a collection of small towns that host an amazing and little publicized event At the beginning of February, the first round of the American Rally Association (ARA) championship kicks off with the SnoDrift Rally This national stage rally event is spread over the course of 4 days, 2 days of competition open to spectators, and hosts teams from all walks of the sport From local privateer teams all the way to the Subaru factory team and a multitude of competitive garages in between
The SnoDrift is particularly special as all the cars compete with snow rated tires without the use of studs. Traction is at a minimum and driving skills and car control are on full display Spectating is free, it just requires the funds for gas, food, and accommodation Warm clothes are an absolute must, map reading and navigation abilities are highly recommended, and I always carry a handheld HAM radio tuned into race control to keep track of stage start and stops
The event begins with Parc Expose in Atlanta, Michigan This is a ceremonial start that allows everyone to get up close to the competitors and their cars depending on who is in attendance you will meet local heroes and celebrities like Travis Pastrana. No one accidentally finds their way to this event; everyone is there to enjoy a good time in the woods while watching motor sports in its rawest form possible up close and personal to the action My tip is getting to the area early and go to Alpena and enjoy lunch and a beer from Austin Brother’s Brewing, stock up on supplies to take to stage, maybe visit the NOAA Great Lakes Museum
My friends and I learned early on that a plan and a capable vehicle really aid in the spectating experience Throughout the
“ N O O N E A C C I D E N T A L L Y F I N D S T H E I R W A Y T O T H I S E V E N T ; E V E R Y O N E I S T H E R E T O E N J O Y A G O O D T I M E I N T H E W O O D S W H I L E W A T C H I N G M O T O R S P O R T S I N I T S R A W E S T F O R M . ”
years we have recovered many fellow watchers from running up on snowbanks or going off the road while trying to replicate the driving happening on course It really adds to the adventure Also, having an idea of where to find stages can be difficult, they are 20 minutes outside of town in the middle of a national forest with parking on the side of the road Extra GPS devices that are pre-loaded help You may park and walk a mile into the stage, leaving is a one-way affair so parking, pointing out the way you came in, additional lighting helps to leave at night and miss other walking spectators As mentioned earlier you may get to stage and wait for a long time to see the cars come through, a radio tuned to race control will clue you into what the status of the rally and the stage you are on, is. Basically, everything we build our travel vehicles for can be tested and practiced with when attending this event in a low risk and fun setting
On Friday after Parc Expose there are 6 stages. If you plan properly, you can maybe make 3 of them. Once a parking spot is found you exit the truck, load a backpack with some beverages, select any camera gear you may or may not want and start the hike into stage That’s when rally starts to make sense As you approach the spectator area you can hear the energy from far off, the sound of chattering and cheering starts to waft through the air, the welcoming sound of cow bells and maybe vuvuzelas The sound of music and smell of campfires the closer you get The spectator stages really become a party zone lining the road find a spot along the caution tape and hang out as drones whiz overhead.
Soon enough the sound of anti-lag engines can be heard popping through the forest as sequential transmissions bang between gears If it’s dark out, the lighting array is seen first moving through the trees
“ . . . I L E A R N E D E A R L Y O N T H A T A P L A N A N D A C A P A B L E V E H I C L E R E A L L Y A I D I N T H E S P E C T A T I N G E X P E R I E N C E . ”
Energy builds, the crowd comes alive with the exclamation of “CAR!” and in a flash the Vermont Sportscar Subaru STI is in front of you kicking sideways and dusting you with a wash of snow as it negotiates the road surface in the corner and off it goes, flames licking from the exhaust and the sweet smell of burnt race fuel Your job doesn’t matter your bills don’t matter you are exactly where you are supposed to be and doing exactly what you are supposed to be doing.
Saturday, 9 stages are open for viewing Due to timing, you may be able to get 5 or take it slow and enjoy the day and make 3 or 4 The showcase is the final stage of the event which is nicknamed Bonfire Alley This is a hairpin turn with a long lead and exit so the cars really carry speed going into and out of the turn Nearly all spectators make this stage, and you will see several dozen bonfires raging full In car video on YouTube give a great perspective Once complete, the race is over for another year, and I’ve been hooked ever since
Why is this write up in an overlanding publication? We build and travel and network to have unique experiences Unique experiences that revolve around vehicles we drive and outfit Once one views the schedule for the ARA it can be found that events are held in many of the same places that we as travelers like to go to; Missouri, Colorado, Washington, the East Coast, and even right outside the Keweenaw (more to come on that in the future) To get the most out of spectating I have found that equipping and honing skills on your vehicle and travel systems is a great boon
Frankly, rally spectating was built for overlanders or vice versa A key part to overlanding for me is experiencing the culture and history of where you are as well, going to small diners and establishments assists in doing exactly that Consider looking at the ARA schedule and finding an event near you It will make for great water cooler talk when you must go back to the real world after a weekend of partying in the middle of the woods. Use it as a test run of your equipment and skills Go have fun and support motorsport in its rawest form Let’s break up some of those winter blues

ADVENTURES IN LEARNING
by Daryl Berden
A Canadian trio consisting of father, son, and pug are sharing their travels around North America with the world. When the pandemic resulted in lockdowns and shorter work hours in its early months, Daryl Berden found he needed something to keep himself busy and to also de-stress during unprecedented times. “I grew up traveling all over the United States and Canada, we used to camp, 4x4 and explore. As I grew up I lost that, and when the pandemic hit, I needed something to keep my mind busy,” Daryl explained. With less work, and school, Daryl packed up his pug, Tosha, and now 11year-oldson, Cayden, for their first adventure. “My wife was still working so she would join us on occasion, but now I could show my son the country’s hidden treasures,” he told the local paper, adding that Cayden was more than excited to travel.
The Aldergrove father and son took off in Daryl’s 4x4 pickup truck, equipped with a bed for a tent, kayaks, and other kinds of gear required for their overlanding adventures. “[Cayden] now picks places for us to go, and has started filming for [our Youtube] channel –now his channel,” Berden said. With some brief experience in video-making in his construction job, and encouragement from friends, Berden created the Vancity Adventure channel to share his travels. The name was chosen to represent both the Vancouver area and capture what they are doing –adventuring. Since it was created three years ago, he said the channel has grown quickly and while most of his audience isn’t local, he’s excited to share the B.C. with the world. “Our channel has grown, and we have educated people and discovered so many places. I love thee mails and text messages asking ‘where was that?’ We live in an amazing province and country and world. We have discovered places I never knew [existed] – and I grew up here,” Berden said.
From ghost towns and train wrecks to getting stuck in the muddy forests, the Berden’s favourite adventure so far is right here in Langley – the Lochiel School at Campbell Valley Regional Park. “I remember as a kid driving by this old school house that was rundown with graffiti all over it on 16th Avenue. My dad [told] me he went there in Grade 1. I was able to interview my dad in the restored school, and see him step back into his memories was priceless,” Berden shared. His father passed away a year following their interview, and the memory remains close to Berden’s heart.
Speaking as a father himself, Berden said these adventures have brought him and Cayden closer together and helped them bond even more. “It’s taken him away from TV and iPads and phones into nature. He is learning how to set up tents, start fires, make food, and what to do if you see a bear (we ran into a bear on one of our adventures and heard a Sasquatch on another),” Berden chuckled. “These adventures provide bonding, education, stories, and something to learn from. Itis always a lesson on confidence, decisiveness, and self awareness.”
“These adventures provide bonding, education, stories, and something to learn from. Itis always a lesson on confidence, decisiveness, and self awareness. ”
There are many adventures in the near and far futures for the father and son, but the next trip is a family vacation to Jamaica. For Vancity Adventure, Berden hopes to make it to northern B.C. and Vancouver Island. Next year, they have plans to travel to Montana and Yellowstone. “We are passionate about showing off the beauty of the world from their own perspective,” Berden said. “It’s clear we are not only having fun, but also learning more about life through our travels.” To follow the Berden’s adventures people can visit youtube.com/c/vancityadventure.

TRAIL RIDES
For the trail ride, approximately 28 rigs divvied up into three groups to prevent congestion on the trails That only kind of worked. The photo on the facing page shows what happens on a trail when leaders don’t share their routes with each other and meet head-on. No harm done, tho, as the convoy with the more talented, skillful and accomplished drivers maneuvered off of the trail for the convoy that was not able to back up to pass Just kidding, the convoy with the 22' rigs was given the right-of-way

CAMPING
The sky was painted pink, orange, and purple as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over our snow-covered camp The crackling of campfires and clicking of diesel heater fuel pumps filled the air, mingling with the sounds of laughter as folks settled in for the night. The stars began to emerge one by one, and the chill of the long winter night crept in. Despite the cold, there was a sense of peace and contentment that settled over us, knowing that we were surrounded by cold beauty of the woods at night and the company of good friends It was a moment to cherish, a memory to hold onto long after the embers of the fire had faded away.
Special thanks to @Jessi lynn007 and @rockrivercindy for the photos.

SOLAR MAXIMUM
Helping our readers understand aurora chasing in the northern midwest, especially during the current solar maximum and upcoming spring equinox.
Aurora chasing in the northern Midwest during the current solar maximum and upcoming spring equinox can be an exhilarating experience for enthusiasts of natural phenomena and astrophotography Here's a breakdown to help readers understand this unique activity:
What is Aurora Chasing?
Aurora chasing involves actively seeking out and observing the aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights These are natural light displays predominantly seen in high-latitude regions around the Arctic and Antarctic. However, during periods of increased solar activity, such as the current solar maximum, auroras can be visible at lower latitudes, including the northern Midwest region of the United States.
Northern Midwest Location:
The northern Midwest encompasses states like Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Dakota, and parts of neighboring states Its proximity to the Canadian border and relatively low light pollution in certain areas make it a prime location for aurora viewing There are prime viewing locations in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness & Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota, Headlands International Dark Sky Park and many places along Lake Superior in Michigan, the Apostle Islands and north-facing sites in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in Wisconsin. Don’t think you have to go to a designated “hot spot” for viewing, tho If you ’ re lucky and the aurora forecast is good, most low-light pollution places will be a safe bet if conditions are right.
Solar Maximum:
The solar maximum is a period of heightened solar activity in the 11-year solar cycle During this phase, the Sun experiences increased sunspot and solar flare activity, leading to more frequent and intense auroral displays The current solar maximum brings enhanced opportunities for aurora sightings in regions where they are not typically observed Many people eagerly anticipate this solar maximum and the news buzz around this predicted phenomenon is growing The maximum does not guarantee a show, and heightened solar activity, including solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) can potentially disrupt satellite communications, power grids, and radio signals. It would be wise to stay informed about space weather forecasts and any potential impacts on technology
Spring Equinox:
The spring equinox occurs around March 20th each year when the Sun crosses the celestial equator, marking the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere During this time, Earth's tilt relative to the Sun is such that it maximizes the potential for aurora visibility in northern latitudes This alignment, combined with the heightened solar activity of the current solar maximum, increases the likelihood of vibrant auroral displays When the solar winds interact with Earth's magnetosphere, they can become trapped and guided along the magnetic field lines towards the poles The alignment of Earth's magnetic field with the solar wind during the equinoxes, combined with increased solar activity during solar maximums, creates optimal conditions for aurora activity
Tips for Aurora Chasing in the Northern Midwest:
Check Aurora Forecast: Utilize online resources and apps that provide aurora forecasts and real-time data to identify optimal viewing times and locations
Choose Dark Sky Locations: Select viewing spots away from urban light pollution to maximize visibility State parks, rural areas, and lakeshores can offer ideal conditions
Stay Informed: Keep an eye on weather forecasts to plan for clear skies, and monitor geomagnetic activity for potential aurora activity
Patience is Key: Aurora displays can be unpredictable, so patience is essential Be prepared to wait for hours for the lights to appear, especially during periods of low geomagnetic activity
Be Ready for the Cold: Dress warmly in layers, even if it's spring, as temperatures can drop significantly during nighttime viewing sessions
Aurora chasing in the northern Midwest during the current solar maximum and upcoming spring equinox offers a captivating blend of natural beauty and astronomical wonder. With careful planning, patience, and a sense of adventure, enthusiasts can witness and capture stunning displays of the northern lights against the backdrop of the spring night sky If you capture some aurora shots and want to enter it into our March photo contest, please watch for the official contest post in our Northology Community Facebook Group here
