ELWOOD TOAST @CoffeeToastRunner

EDITOR'S NOTE: In light of the upcoming holiday season, and the 2021 gift guide included in this issue, we are re-sharing some our favorite shopping tips from Elwood. Watch for future trail running content from Mr. Toast in upcoming issues.

I don't have to tell you that between COVID, restrictions and lockdowns that small businesses are hurting and struggling to survive. We all need to support them every chance we get. The owners and their employees are neighbors of ours who need us to invest in them which in turn invests in our community.

This Christmas season, buy something you need or don't need. Visit your favorite locally owned coffee shop and order something for yourself and add on a gift card. Send the gift card to a friend or family member via the US Postal Service. Give the shop a cash tip above and beyond the purchase price. Tip your mail delivery person with a gift card from a local business.

Most magazines include advertising and I have to say that the ads and information in this magazine are outstanding. I've learned quite a bit just by perusing these ads each month and I've discovered some independent dealers through those ads. Please, this Christmas and holiday season make an attempt to financially support your local independent, hometown businesses and the businesses listed in this magazine.

OVERLAND

THE EVENT OVERLAND EXPO GUEST If you love this MJ build as much as we do, follow @connortrent and tell him Jim sent ya.

Jim Roy talks about his experience as a guest of KC HiLiTES & Dr. Deathwobble at Expo East 2021 Have you ever wanted to immerse yourself in the overland lifestyle? Are you new to overland and want to learn more, or you shopping for overland gear? If you answered yes to any of the above, I have got an event for you. I recently had the opportunity to attend Overland Expo East as the guest of the infamous Dr. Deathwobble and KC HiLiTES, and wow was I impressed. Overland Expo is a 3 day event that occurs in 3 locations across the United States. West in Arizona , Mountain in Colorado, and East In the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. I attended Expo East which is about 30% the size of West but was a great intro into the experience. The smaller size allowed me to get to all the booths and speak with vendors. Vendors you say? Yes of course, Overland Expo is a showcase for businesses small and large to show their wares to the Overland community. There were multiple brands there and some very innovative ideas. A few Vendors that jumped out at me were Step 22 Bags, a company with innovative ways to keep things organized in your rig. Tentrax trailers, a small trailer with 35 cubic feet of weatherproof storage below a tent that folds from the top. Made with American sourced materials just 4 hours away in North Carolina, oh and if you get a little too off road, it floats! Speaking off road Torq masters was there , showing their traction aids. They make lockers for Toyota, Subaru, Jeep and many other popular brands. KC HiLiTES was well represented with 4 built vehicles of different back grounds showing off the pinnacle in illumination. Though I may be biased as I spent the bulk of my time with the KC team. And let’s not forget Off Grid surplus to have you looking good in their functional tough clothing. When you get tired of shopping and dreaming about the epic plans you have for your rig, Overland expo also has classes you can attend at no additional charge. Topics cover a wide variety of things from “ What is overlanding” to “ how to plan a trip” and the ever popular “Where to poop”. I was only able to attend one class. It was presented by Dean of East Coast Overland Adventures and it was all about radio communication, featuring the Midland GMRS line of radios. The class was well done and the material was presented very clearly.

For more info on this epic Subi build checkout @adventure_dadwagon on IG. Greg is a great guy, and it was cool to see such a clean subi build.

If a class isn’t your thing, you can check out several screenings of overland films, demo the new Ford Bronco or a Harley Motorcycle on the test track. Now that you're sold on the event no need to look for lodging, it is after all a overland event. And it is held at the Infinity Downs Farm in Virginia. This is a beautiful 300 acre property and you can camp, er um Overland right on site. They had bathroom and shower facilities on site to accommodate the guests. The only complaint I heard all weekend was that there were not enough food trucks to accommodate the lunch rush. So bring snacks or plan to wait in line. If you have further questions check out the Overland Expo website and find an event near you.

GREAT LAKE VIEWS

MICHIGAN- LOG SLIDE At the end of Log Slide Road, 7 miles west of Grand Marais on Alger County Road H-58. A short walk from the parking lot leads to the Log Slide area on top of the dunes where you can gaze out over the Grand Sable Banks and Lake Superior.

MICHIGAN- INSPIRATION POINT Traveling north on M-22 from Arcadia, you will see a "scenic overlook" sign. Admire the striking view of Lake Michigan from the parking lot or work your way up 120 steps for a better look.

INDIANA- LAKE VIEW BEACH The parking lot of Lake View is paved and accessible. Facilities and a shelter are also accessible. There are stairs down to the beach.

ILLINOIS- PROMONTORY POINT Part of Burnham Park, this scenic man-made peninsula & picnic spot juts into Lake Michigan and offers sunrise views and views of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline.

WISCONSIN- POINT BEACH Point Beach State Forest features 3,000 acres of land and 6 miles of sandy beach along the shores of Lake Michigan. A popular feature is the Rawley Point Lighthouse.

MINNESOTA- PALISADE HEAD A lookout with a stone wall provides a comfortable place to shoot photos – the face of the vertical cliff is 350 feet high (107 metres), or look northeast to see the oftenphotographed Shovel Point jutting into the lake.

WINTER CAR CAMPING BASICS Overlanding = car backpacking? If you think about it, our overland vehicles are basically huge backpacks on wheels. We cram in everything we need to survive the trip including food, clothes, gear for activities and worstcase scenario emergency and recovery items. While we don't have to consider weight quite as much as a backpacker does, weight and space are still huge considerations. Organizing your load and making a list can help make sure you bring everything you need and that there is space for your necessities. Add in the seasonal elements such as wind, rain & snow, and you will need to change up your plan for comfort and maybe for survival. Preparation is the key to enjoying your time in the great outdoors, and even more important when venturing out during the winter.

STAY SAFE ON & OFF THE ROAD!

Check your car before you drive. Technet suggests inspecting the followingBattery Antifreeze/coolant Hazard lights Winter wipers Exhaust system Windshield washer fluid Heater Ignition system Brakes Thermostat Defroster Lights Oil level

Make a plan. Share a plan. Allot enough time to drive safely to your destination- winter driving conditions can add time to your trip. Leave an itinerary with a friend or family member and have a contact plan in case of emergency.

Expect to get stuck. Part of the fun of traveling two-track in the winter is plowing thru the snow. Be prepared for self-recovery by bringing traction boards at the very least and if you have a winch, inspect and make sure everything is in working order before leaving. And don't forget your controller, straps, gloves and snatch blocks at home!

Be kind to your rig! Winter weather is hard on your car, plastics are more brittle and batteries are less efficient in cold temps. Slow down, take it easy and set expectations of having fun safely.

Are we ready to go? First off, be sure the road or trail you have in mind is open. Check the National Forest Motor Vehicle Use maps if you plan on camping or traveling there. You can download the maps for free on the free Avenza app and know where you are at all times. If you are planning a trip on state land, check with the DNR for seasonal closures and updates. Carrying a snowmobile trail map can be helpful to show where you should not go. Buddy up! Always go out with at least one other vehicle. Getting unstuck is always easier with an extra set of eyes or pair of hands. An extra vehicle also means you won't have to walk out if you are broken down or really stuck.

The T.R.E.A.D. Principles are simple tips on ways to minimize your impact when playing in the outdoors. Learn more on the Tread Lightly! website.

Make sure you pack survival gear along with food and water. Preparing for the unexpected can prevent a mishap from becoming a tragedy. Pack for longer than you plan to be out for a worst-case type of scenario.

Camping in a winter wonderland Now that your vehicle is ready, and you have a destination and a plan, how are you going to stay warm overnight? Don't go to bed cold! Do a few jumping jacks before turning in for the night. Wear long johns, a hat & socks made of synthetic material , stay away from cotton! Sleeping in a tent can be quite comfy if you have the proper rated sleeping bag and insulation below you. Sleeping bag liners & quilts can add to your comfort. You don't really need to warm the air in your tent or car, you just need to stay warm inside your sleeping bag. A 12v heated blanket is an option for those who just can't stand the thought of going without heat. Purchase one with a timer so you don't drain your battery. Propane heaters are an option but they produce a ton of moisture inside the tent or vehicle. Be sure to buy one specifically for indoor use and crack a window! Diesel heaters are gaining in popularity, the Chinese knockoffs are inexpensive but there are mixed reviews on noise and inoperability in extreme cold temps. Of course, you could run your vehicle for a few minutes, but make sure your tailpipe is not blocked with snow or gear and don't fall asleep with the car running.

Personal items short list Clothes warm long underwear, tops and bottoms warm long sleeve shirt warm sweater or jacket windproof jacket raincoat or poncho that fits over the jacket) warm pants snow pants or ski pants to wear over regular pants wool or synthetic material socks boots, loose fitting and waterproof waterproof or water resistant mittens or gloves wool cap or synthetic ski cap that covers the ears Sleeping Gear sleeping bag and extra blanket(s) insulated pad to put under the sleeping bag Personal Equipment headlamp & flashlight with new batteries fire lighting materials: candles, fire starters, plenty of matches in waterproof container & lighter knife personal first aid kit compass mess kit: cup, fork, spoon, plate clean up kit: toilet paper, soap, tooth brush/paste, wash cloth plenty of water energy snacks: chocolate candy, granola bars, etc. throw-away hand warmers

YOUR VOICEMAIL WON'T SAVE YOU From the Nicolet Search Team"recently a Facebook post has gone viral telling people to "update their voice mail" if their battery is going low. This is not the best advice, and will likely not work. We would like to ask that you not follow this advice, clarify why this is bad advice, and suggest better options. If you have any battery life, send a text message. It only takes a fraction of a second of data reception to get that message out. This has a much better chance to make it through than updating your voice mail. What should you do instead? 1. Put your phone in airplane mode to conserve power. 2. Compose an SMS message to all your trusted contacts. Write where you are (as best as you can, bonus points for GPS coordinates!) your condition, and any info needed to locate you. 3. When you are happy with your detailed SMS message, turn off airplane mode, send, and cross your fingers that your tiny SMS data-packet gets out to us! 4. STAY WITH YOUR VEHICLE, STAY NEAR A ROAD OR TRAIL. It is FAR easier for a hasty team to locate a vehicle on a road/trail than to locate a person that has gone off into the brush. 5. If that doesn’t work, there are plenty of trained folks out there looking for youassuming you told someone where you were going and when you'd be back. You did remember to tell someone your plans, right?

EMERGENCY COMMUNICATION Relying on your cellphone for emergency communication is asking for trouble in certain locations and situations. Whether you choose a personal location beacon, a one-way or two-way satellite communication device is up to you, but the peace of mind knowing that you can have access to emergency services can be comforting and liberating. In our December issue we will delve deeper into the options available and the features that make each type of unit useful or unique. Until then, have fun, stay warm and be safe!

NIGHT CAT CAMPING HAMMOCK TENT Reccommendation by All Things Overlanding "I've tried a lot of sleeping solutions over the years. From hammocks, to tent camping with a cot and without, to roof top tents, and from that, I've learned that ease and speed of deployment and tear down are really important to me. Unless you're staying in one place for multiple days, you'll be setting up and tearing down at a new camp each night while you explore. So, I have spent about 7 nights in this all-in-one sleeping solution that includes a hammock, with adjustable straps, an integrated bug net, and a rain fly and it's great. For the money, it's probably the smallest footprint sleeping solution you'll find. Most importantly it's comfortable and quick to set up and tear down. I highly recommend it!"

EARNING THE VIEW It started getting dicey really quick.

This wasn’t like the fire roads we cruise in Wisconsin. This wasn’t

even a road. A path, maybe? Two-track yes, but slick with the wet autumn leaves, steep, littered with rocks and logs. Our guide is in the

lead jeep and our friend is behind me. Some of the passengers decide

to get out and walk under the guise of taking pictures but I think they’re nervous. It’s tight, a tree leaves a mark on my hard top. The guide and I winch thru a slick spot but our friend bobs his way right

thru after us. The cigarette dangling casually off his lip surely added

about 50 horsepower. Finally the three of us crawl out of the trees and into the sunshine on the side of a mountaintop. The view is

stunning, the Huron Mountains are at peak fall color. We hike to the

top for pictures and to gaze out on the valleys and mountains. The rest of the day is just as amazing, twisty, muddy two-track giving

way to rocky mountain ascents and descents. Overland, over fallen trees, crevasses, gullies, I hear our guide…”turn driver…now come

forward about a foot... bump up and over.” My front end slides sideways and I swallow my heart as it tries to leap out of my throat.

He has me back up and realign. I hear a quiet “go, go, go,” and I’m up

and over. I’m giddy. We stop for a break and I’m about to burst with joy but my companions seem unfazed. I’m looking around to catch an eye, “did you see what just happened? We climbed a flipping

mountain!” I want to shout but they’re cool and relaxed, taking in the views of Huron Bay and Lake Superior beyond the hills. Everywhere

they went, I followed. There were no chicken routes, it was go or get left behind. I loved every minute of it, with a shit-eating grin plastered on my face I must have looked like a lunatic behind the wheel. The final ascent was blocked by fallen trees and we decided to forgo finding an alternative route. Instead we climbed on foot and

relaxed on the mountainside while the warm autumn sun started to

set. There was laughter, tired smiles and sighs as the events of the day sank into the soft pillow of memory. I could have lingered there forever on that mountainside, I’m pretty sure my heart is there somewhere still.

Found some awesome campsites and hit some very good truck and bike trails." -Ben Wicklund

Make yourself

at home!

We don't always camp and we definitely have standards when it comes to non-camp lodging. Chain hotels? No. Haunted houses? No. Never-remodeled-orupgraded-in-60-years? No. We do love the rustic, the quirky, the historic, the off-the-beaten-path stays. In this monthly feature we plan to review some of the places we have stayed and give you an honest opinion. We are compiling a listing of our favorite Hipcamps, Air bnbs, cabins, lodges, yurts, whatever- if its fun, fresh or funky, we will let you know. If you are an establishment owner, please reach out and let us know about your place, we want to find the unique and share it with other adventurous travelers! If you are a traveler who wishes to submit review, please email us immediately!

Lodge Life is the best life.

We have both visited and stayed at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge during the most beautiful season in the Keweenaw- winter. Yes, you have not experienced the Copper Country until you have seen the frozen lakes and waterfalls and felt the icy wind off of Lake Superior. The best thing about the Lodge is the variety of winter activities that surround the complex. From lounging around the bonfire with a fancy coffee to snowshoeing or fat tire biking the many trails, there is something for everyone to enjoy and plenty to keep you interested. Keep your eye out for special programs at KML including photography seminars and skijoring races. The food served is especially delicious and unique. R RE EN ND DE EZ ZV VO OU US S IIN N T TH HE E O OZ ZA AR RK KS S

THIS IS NO FAIR WEATHER EVENT. THIS IS WHAT WE DO. BY JOEY "THE BROFESSOR" SLAYTON PHOTOS BY NATHAN P. ANDERSON I pulled into Byrd's Adventure Center between Cass and Oark, AR around 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning. I was fortunate enough to be able to take a few days off from the nine to five in order to get away to the event that many of the Overlanders in the south look forward to each year, Rendezvous in the O z a r k s. T h e t e m p e r a t u r e s w e r e p e r f e c t a s I headed up into the Ozark Mountains. It misted on me a couple times but not enough to make me roll the windows up. The air therapy I was experiencing on the start of this getaway was just what I needed right now. Byrd's was waking up. A few gargantuan RV's were parked up near the highway dawning their overpriced toy hauler trailers and a vendor or two was scattered in the field getting a good head start on setting up for the weekend. I did not give them much attention as friends who had set up in the back forty had coffee perked and ready. After a relaxing morning talking about setups, new gear, how good the coffee was, and the coming of bad weather, I bid my farewells and made my way up to the vendor area to help in the setup. Rick and Brad from Natural State Overland were busy making the place ready for vendors to come in and set up. Expectations are high in this, the sixth edition of the Rendezvous. A conversation with Brad revealed a prediction of 700 rigs and well over 1,000 attendees for this year despite the bad weather and widespread rumors of cancellation due to rain. This is no fair weather event. This is what we do. We camp, we sit around the fire, we travel, and we wheel, in spite of the weather. It may be bad, it may be good, but in the end we are doing this and Byrd's was now hopping with rig after rig coming down the gravel road ready to pick out the perfect spot for their weekend. . Around 2 p.m., Aaron rolled in with a trailer filled with gear from Artemis Overland Hardware in Springfield, Missouri. This is where I would spend my weekend. Just as soon as they dropped the trailers, the clouds rolled in and the rain started.

We rushed around setting up shelters and awnings as the afternoon filled with spurts of mist and rain. Other vendors rolled in from Overland Rentals from Fort Smith, Arkansas, CB Adventure Supply from Fort Worth, Texas, Badac Adventure Co and Okie Overland from Tulsa, Oklahoma quickly setting up shop before the bottom fell out. Later on in the afternoon, we fired up the grill, added a few steaks as a reward for our hard work and sat down to dinner as the thunder rolled and the lightning strikes. We settled in for a very wet evening underneath our vendor tent. It was nice as the rain fell on the canvas, with little to no wind. We caught up with trips and events from recent past, as we do not get to see each other as much as we like. This is one of the great things about this event. It is much like a family reunion of sorts. It is meeting up with old friends and meeting new ones for future travels and communication. This event brings us together. It keeps us close even though we are all so very far apart. Pulling ourselves together on that soggy Thursday morning was a little tough. Keeping everything dry was a chore in itself, but just the added work of gear and rain made it a little less enjoyable than it could have been, but with smiles and laughter, we welcomed every passersby into our conglomeration of a setup. It was a fun day, a profitable day meeting new people and distributing quality gear to all who ventured in. Chris from MOORE Expo,

Adventure Motors, 7x Off-Road Trailers, ActionTrax, and Long Creek Overland all were unloading their trailers and setting up their areas. Every rig you could dream of with every kind of Overlanding setup imaginable lined up at the gate to sign their papers, pay for camping and enter into the Adventure Center. You could feel the excitement now. Rain was not keeping anyone away (well maybe a few "fair weatherlanders"). This is what we do. This is how we live and everyone was showing up in force to an event that is looked forward to each year and seen as one of the premier events in the Overlanding south. We kick off Rendezvous today and everyone was ready. Around 5 a.m. Friday morning, I woke to the sound of thunder. I have lived in Arkansas my whole life and I knew this sound. This was not good. This was the "you better take cover" type of thunder just off to our west. I hurriedly put on my clothes and rain suit. I made my way down the rooftop tent ladder and turned on my light. It was coming and I tried to make sure everything was under cover and tied down. Aaron Paris from Switchback Outdoor Safety walked over along with Adam from Okie Overland. Even with no cell service, all of our phones went off with a weather alert. We were now in a Tornado Warning. This is not something you want to hear or see when so many are in tents as it truly becomes intense. A few minutes later, I am sitting in my passenger seat watching the wind blow

THIS EVENT BRINGS US TOGETHER. IT KEEPS US CLOSE EVEN THOUGH WE ARE ALL SO VERY FAR APART.

through for about six seconds, but in those six seconds, took out our Artemis tent, my awning, and heard my tent fall above me. It was a long six seconds. Then the heavy rain came for a while and then it calmed down. Knowing there was nothing I could do at this point; I got out, pushed my tent back up, and went back to bed until morning. Around 8 a.m. I heard people stirring outside. Misti (from The Day We Make) came out and helped me set the Artemis tent back up. It was still raining, but we wanted to try to keep what we could as dry as possible. Others around the vendor area were stirring as well. It was a crazy morning trying to regroup and get our wits about us. Several from the event came around that morning telling stories of mangled awnings and fallen tents. I am glad we were all able to experience this together with no story blamed with embellishment. Early afternoon, the sun finally showed itself through the dense clouds and the blue sky followed. We thought we now were in the clear, when shortly the winds of change picked up at about 20-30 mph gusts lifting tents up off the ground, pulling stakes, and wrapping awnings once again around unsuspecting vehicles. Kids chased each other around the center of the field as their parents looked in each vendor area with the anticipation of some new cool gear catching their wanting eye. Classes taught all over the Adventure Center from Safety to Gear Management. As the wind helped to dry everything out, the temperature fell like a lead balloon from the sky. I walked around finally to visit friends and see all that was setup for the attendees. Natural State Overland fed the vendors a nice meal and thanked us for coming to their event. The Founder of NSO, Randy Putt himself, came around and thanked us as we lined up for some delicious tacos. That evening, fires lit all around the Adventure Center, everyone was thankful that Chris from MOORE Expo had bought everyone as much wood as they could burn. It was a great evening as stories were told, big and small, about the day, about the year, some were lies and many were truth, but this for sure, people were coming together as they had hoped during this amazing event.

Saturday rolled around at around 46 degrees. Coffee was brewing all over as the crowds starting to gather around the vendor area once again. Ages from zero to 90 rolled down through the field of dreams. Bicycles ran by, scooters pulling trailered goggle wearing dogs stopped by to say hi. Chef Wes and I cooked breakfast and lunch for those who dawned the Artemis tent and others who just strolled near to peek in. Old friends came by and patches exchanged with new ones. Chairs began to fill the field as everyone eagerly awaited the drawings and giveaways. It seemed like an eternity before Rick took the microphone, passed out NSO swag and called numbers to impatient soon to be winners. It was a great evening. Darkness approached as they called the final number. Everyone picked up their trash, grabbed their chairs and went back to their rented space for the weekend. We were tired, but we did not want to leave. We needed this time with each other. It could be a week or two or maybe up to six months before we met up with some of these friends again. This time is precious. It is family. It is a reunion of those

who share the same vision for life, the same love for the outdoors, the same quest for solitude. We rested well that night. Sunday morning we knew it was time to pack up and load the trailers. One by one, the vendors pulled out of the field. One by one the Jeeps, Toyotas, Land Rovers, Suby's and whatever else you could think of, rolled out of Byrd's headed back to their normal everyday life. It was not one that we hurried to get to, not a place we were eager to leave. Slowly but surely, the sun came up over the trees and warmed the air, drying the dew off the tents. The trailers were loaded and hooked to their respective wagons to get them home. Wearied and worn, some stinky, drivers crawled into their cockpits and fired up their trusty rigs. They traveled near and far, from here and there, well over 20 states to attend this event. We experienced every kind of weather you could think of during these last few days, but it did not matter. It did not keep us away. Well over 1,000 attendees left Byrd's with one thing on their mind, "I cannot wait until next year."

We made it back home and the Social Media posts had already started. Photos and comments about how good of a time they had were written and posted. Videos from drones and phones littered the internet of all of the rigs and people they had the opportunity to meet during the event. Stories of great classes that taken, to the crafts their kids were able to make, all the way to the trail runs, vendors and giveaways people shouted from the rooftops about greatness. Yet this event, much like the others, has the same effect on everyone who chances the weather and conditions to attend. When asked what was the best thing about attending the Rendezvous each year, the answer is always the same..."spending time with old friends and meeting new ones." It is always the people. That is what makes this Rendezvous with each other so special.

MIDWEST CONNECTIONS There is no doubt that the overland community is thriving on social media channels. We can laugh all we want about being "Instalanders" or being "YouTube Famous" but social media is connecting people to form meaningful bonds and friendships. Here we highlight our favorite Facebook groups in the upper midwest and urge you to join in on the fun.

Illinois Overlanders Maurice de Lannee is the guy in the driver's seat for the cornfield explorers. "I started Illinois Overlanders to give us a place and have a slightly different style of group than most groups with different information being shared." The Illinois Overlander website is rich with info, profiles, maps, and blog posts. "I am not sure where to go with Illinois Overlanders, lol. I think it's more something that takes shape while being in the process."

Michigan Overland Nick Howell says Michigan Overland was started "as a way to connect family members and plan overland trips. We opened it up to the public and it turned into a way for other Michigan based overlanders to connect and plan trips. The future state is to be the go-to overland community in Michigan. I honestly have no interest in self-promotion for it, I'd rather help those out who make some money off these types of things in whatever little way I can."

Midwest Overlanders Midwest Overlanders was started by Cody Ash and his wife as a travel blog to catalog their adventures. Over time it evolved into a Facebook group. With almost 8000 members, there's a wide array of experience and input available. "We plan to keep it a free forum, never charging for access. Join the discussion on our Facebook group and our Discord server," says team member Will Nelson.

Minnesota Overlanders "The group was started by Josh Rotan, Arron Willis, and Bryan Monahan. They created the club, because at the time Minnesota didn't have much to offer in the overlanding area. Josh moved back south to care for his aging parents, Arron started a family, and Bryan lost his battle with cancer" says current admin Andy Nepsha. "I was left with the club to do my best to carry on what they started. Going forward, all we want to do is help get more people out to enjoy what Minnesota has to offer."

Wisconsin Overland The Wisconsin Overland team is Cindy Pope, Mandy Buehler, Taylor Kosky, Jack Flood, Chris Offenwanger and Jake Thompson and was formed by merging two Wisconsin groups led by Cindy and Mandy. Wisconsin Overland has participated in National Forest cleanups, volunteer service outings, Christmas tree hunts and camping events.

Wisconsin Jeep Owners Group's Jeep Camp has a new location but the same old good times & fun.

The Field - ATV, UTV Park & Ride and Stay in Pembine, Wisconsin

Last, but certainly not least...we would like to thank all of you. These camps would not happen if it wasn't for all of you wonderful enthusiasts. That's the best part about this group, the lasting friendships and memories. All because of a jeep! And shout out to everyone who attended! Camp was left clean and trash free. No property was damaged and everyone is welcome back. This was a phenomenal group. We appreciate everyone following the rules and caring enough to respect the property." -Jill Carr

ADVENTURES IN CAMP COOKING In this issue, we have a fun take on the egg roll, an ingenious quick trail phò and explore warm camp cocktails at the weather turns cooler. Many of these recipes use some shortcuts to make prep at camp easier (pre-shredded cabbage, squirt bottle garlic & ginger, ready-made soups and make-ahead drink mixes.) If you try any of our recipes, be sure to post and tag on social, and we will share!

While we can’t take credit for the original recipe egg roll in a bowl is one of our camp and home dinner staples. Super easy, one pot, easily customized, and the left overs the next day maybe be even better than the first night; which makes it a great make ahead recipe then just heat up in a skillet at camp. When we make our recipe we use a combo of ground pork and pork sausage because we think it adds flavor but you could use ground turkey, turkey sausage, ground chicken, chicken sausage, or shrimp.

Directions STEP 1

Ingredients Slaw mix 1 lb of protein of your choice 3 tablespoons of fresh ground ginger 2 tablespoons of minced garlic 3 tablespoons of soy sauce 1 tablespoon of sesame oil

add your sesame oil to your pan and add your ground pork and sausage and start browning

STEP 2 when it’s about halfway cooked add your ginger, garlic and soy sauce

STEP 3 Once your meat is cooked add your slaw mix and stir in cook until the slaw is tender

STEP 4 Then all that’s left is to dish up and add your green onion, sesame seeds, and spicy mayo on top.

This recipe is low carb but if you wanted to add more carbs to it you can cook up some instant ramen noodles and stir just the noodles in at the end of cooking, We use the 14oz bags of tri-colored cabbage. We use 1/2 and 1/2 of ground pork and pork sausage. You can get garlic & fresh ground ginger in squeeze bottles at the storemakes it so much easier! Optional: roasted sesame seeds for topping, you can also mix equal parts mayonnaise (not miracle whip) and sriracha for spicy mayo topping to add some kick.

JETBOIL PHÒ BY JIM ROY OFFROAD GARAGE PODCAST

Ingredients 1- Phò bowl 1/4# ish shaved ribeye 1- jalapeño Basil and mint leaves Lime wedge Sriracha

Fast trail food doesn’t have to be boring or bland. I recently took a trip to the northern lower. The day plan was simple enough. Peep some leaves, and check on the cabin. I checked the weather and saw a high in the 40’s. So I knew soup was on order. I had grabbed Phò bowls from Costco so I grabbed one and some shaved ribeye from the freezer. When lunchtime came I fired up the Jetboil and boiled the water. I added the noodles, and seasoning pack. I sliced up a jalapeño and added that and the ribeye. I know I forgot the basil, but Rose City didn’t have any. Anyway a great way to warm up and a simple way to dress up a store bought meal.

Directions STEP 1 Boil your water and add seasoning pack.

STEP 2 Add noodles When noodles soften add meat, jalapeño and basil/ mint.

STEP 3 Sriracha and lime to taste! Enjoy!

Easy camp coffee, tea, cocoa & toddies Here are mocha latte & chai tea mixes you can make ahead, some new drink interpretations and old classics.

MOCHA LATTE 2 cups instant dry milk powder 1 cup sugar 1 cup cocoa powder ½ cup instant coffee or espresso granules At camp: Add 2 – 4 tbs mix to a mug with boiling water.

CHAI Mix at home: 2 cups instant milk powder ¼ cup powdered sugar 1 cup white sugar 2 teaspoons cinnamon

1 ½ teaspoons ginger 1 teaspoon nutmeg 1 teaspoon ground cloves ½ teaspoon ground cardamom

To avoid sediment in your finished tea, grind all the ingredients to a very fine powder in a food processor. Pack some black tea bags to use when you get to camp. At camp: Add 2 tablespoons of your chai mix, a teabag, and a cup of boiling water to your favorite camping mug.

ADULT S'MORES HOT CHOCOALATE 1 cup milk 1 cup heavy cream 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips 1 graham cracker crushed 2 tbsp honey 1 tbsp simple syrup 1/4 cup chocolate syrup 1/4 cup chocolate pudding mix powder 2 oz. whiskey marshmallows or marshmallow fluff Instructions Drizzle the rim of your mugs in the chocolate syrup and then dip them in the crushed graham cracker and set aside. Add milk and heavy cream to a medium saucepan over medium heat, add chocolate chips and melt. Add the honey, simple syrup, and chocolate syrup and whisk together. Whisk in the pudding mix little by little until fully combined. Bring mixture to a low simmer and remove from heat. Whisk in the whiskey and pour into prepared mugs. Top with toasted marshmallows or marshmallow fluff & chocolate drizzle.

THE CLASSIC HOT TODDY 1 bag black tea ¼ lemon

1 tablespoon honey 1.5 oz whiskey

Boil a cup of water in a pot over your campfire or stove. Remove from heat and add your tea bag of choice to steep for 2-4 minutes. Remove bag and discard. While your tea is steeping, squeeze a quarter lemon into a cup. Drizzle in honey to taste - one tbsp is a good place to start. Add a 1.5oz shot of whiskey to the cup, and then top off with tea.

WARM VANILLA CAMP CIDER 2 cups apple cider 4 ounces vanilla vodka 1 can or bottle hard apple cider 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream, chilled

Small pot Spoon Stove Mason jar with lid

Heat the non-alcoholic cider in a pot over medium heat. Remove just before boiling. Meanwhile, pour cold whipping cream into a mason jar, and screw on the lid. Shake vigorously (a great kid job) until the cream has thickened to desired consistency. Pour about 1 ounce of vodka into each mug. Pour about 1/4 of the can or bottle of hard cider into the mugs. Pour about 1/4 of the hot apple cider into the mugs. Stir, top each with a dollop of whipped cream, and enjoy your evening.
