The first thing on our list is communication. When an emergency happens, we need a way to get ahold of emergency services Cell phones won't always have service in the areas you go to explore so having a different way to contact someone is important. Radios/walkie talkies have a short range and there is no guarantee that someone will be within that range to answer a call for help For these exact reasons we have a satellite SOS device These devices allow you to send a call for help and your GPS co ordinates to get help to you.
There are multiple options on the market for these devices including: Garmin In reach capable devices, Spot X, ACR Bivy stick, ACR ResQLink, and ZOLEO satellite communicator: to name a few. Amazon has all of the above listed devices by searching: SOS hiking device

We personally use a Garmin In reach mini when we are out adventuring. This device lets us use GPS and Gaia while we are exploring so its double duty for us. In the case of emergency if we activate the SOS button emergency services is immediately contacted and given the GPS coordinates It also sends a message out to your emergency contact person to let them know you activated your device; and to be aware that any unknown numbers may be emergency personnel trying to contact them

OVERLAND OVERLAND
THE TRED HE RED
Northology Adventures and Overland Pioneers team up with TC Teardrops to bring a new overland basecamp event to the Red River Gorge, KY and raise money for local trails. It began with a '96 E350 one ton Quigley 4x4 Ford van with a 6" lift crawling through some of the most wicked trails on the Daniel Boone Back-country Byway one cold April weekend. As our host and local legend, Jeremiah Oschwald, taught us the finer points of the "Kentucky Left" (a spotter's inadvertent reverse directive in the rear-view mirror,) an idea began to form.
Our partnership with Jeremiah and his marketing and videography business, Overland Pioneers, began five years ago at the very first Keweenaw Overland Adventure Retreat. Jeremiah shared our love of the upper peninsula of Michigan and we got the invite to come down to Kentucky to try some of the trails on a camping trip with Cait and Jordan Schutt (on instagram as midwest funrunnr.) We celebrated Chad's birthday with maybe a bit too much adult beverage and a plan to bring other overland and offroad enthusiasts down to experience these trails and natural beauty was hatched.
A last-minute venue change threw us into a state of semi-panic but as the rigs started rolling in at Callie's and happy campers picked up their goody bags, we felt the excitement and knew this was going to be an epic adventure weekend.
DANIEL BOONE BACKCOUNTRY BYWAY
Spaas Creek...
Pumpkin Hollow...
Mountain Springs...
Fixer Lee Co...
All of these backwoods dirt twotrack county roads are stuff of legend in the local wheeling scene. As we learned more about the DBBB organization, the more it came apparent that we had to do something big to help support them. I mean, how often does one get to directly contribute to a trail system they use? We partnered with the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway and TC Teardrops to raffle off a teardrop camper to raise funds for the trails we used all weekend and raised over $2000. Boy did that feel good.
"The Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway (DBBB) is a moderately difficult, high clearance route for licensed, street legal vehicles. It utilizes historic county roads around the Red River Gorge and Daniel Boone National Forest. It contains terrain surfaces varying between one third gravel, one third trail, and one third asphalt. It can be completed within a full day or two, depending on various factors.
The Byway was created for anyone in a capable 4WD vehicle to access the beauty of Eastern Kentucky. With your help we can maintain, improve and expand this wonderful trail system and guarantee its access for generations to come. Please remember when enjoying the outdoors in any capacity to always follow the "Tread Lightly" principles. " -DBBB website
"Awesome weekend. Well planned and executed. Thank you everyone!"
-Eric Benner
"It was amazing.. completely incredible event, location, people, food, and weather...the venue (Callie and family) were awesome."

Thank you, Sam Justice for the Hollerwood tours and to Cara McClellan for leading the Women's ride.
Fueled by the success and growth of out-door adventure and overland basecamp events, a new event was born in the Red River Gorge. Jeremiah of Overland Pioneers and Cindy & Chad from Northology Adventures launched this in order to share the beauty of the area, the thrill of the trails and as a way to enrich and give back to the community.
The offroad scene in eastern Kentucky is as diverse as the landscape. There is plenty to keep the casual 4x4 enthusiast, the hard-core wheeler, the adventurous overlander and adv biker happy and coming back for more. You could spend a month on the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway, Kentucky Adventure Tour and Hollerwood Off Road Park

We fell in love with the Red River Gorge and we think you will, too. We created this event to give you a way to experience the scenic beauty and trails in the area with a like-minded community that is fun, family-friendly and is driven to give back. See you next time!

One of the many amazing things about the overlanding community in the midwest is the diversity of participants both in background and segments of society represented. Since there are so many military service members in our community, we wanted to thank them for their service this Veterans Day. We also asked them to share what overlanding means to them and how participating in vehicle-assisted adventure travel enriches their lives and welcomes them into an outdoor adventure community.
"I was just mentioning to my wife while at Overland The Red that our overlanding adventures are like therapy for me As a combat Vet the some of the precision, accuracy, and sense of accomplishment while working on and driving my rig and gear take me back to working on and flying in Army Helicopters It takes me back to some of my favorite memories At the end of the day it really all revolves around the camaraderie of new friends and old ones sitting around a fire sharing stories and laughs "
HONORING ALL WHO SERVED
-Sgt Tony Pompa2000 2006 Flight Engineer on a Special Operations MH47 Chinook Helicopter 160th SOAR Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) Ft Campbell Kentucky
"The idea of overlanding and riding trails makes me feel at peace As a soldier I was trained to spot and find roadside bombs in Iraq There isn't a real world need for that and it was hard to transition into someone I forgot how to be Trail riding takes a keen eye and attention to detail Being safe and taking care of others in your group is also a must. I wont go much more in depth but this community is helping me to remember what I lost "
"I think overlanding a life have a lot in common It’s about the journey You will face many obstacles with different routes to take Some will be easy and some will test you You get to choose to build your rig out how you want just as you build yourself The best thing about overlanding is the community, the peoples you meet You get to build relationships and connections with so many people all around the US or even the world Sitting around the campfire at the end of the day reflecting on the challenges that were had is a great builder of confidence, community and friendship. “The road less traveled is often the most difficult but with the most reward”
"I enjoy the non tactical convoy movements that we conduct while picking up trash and traveling the trails Overlanding is like an ADA compliant back packing trip My physical abilities have been diminishing and I have found overlanding a great way to connect with nature and people "
Watch for future coverage of organizations dedicated to serving veterans and their families through overlanding & outdoor activities. If you know of an organization that might like to spread the word about their mission, please have them contact Christina Goodwin at cgoodwin86@gmail.com
THANKS FOR YOUR SERVICE
"SITTING AROUND THE CAMPFIRE AT THE END OF THE DAY REFLECTING ON THE CHALLENGES THAT WERE HAD IS A GREAT BUILDER OF CONFIDENCE, COMMUNITY AND FRIENDSHIP."
-HUNTER KURDZIEL
Discover 4x4 Adventures hosted 36 amazing women from across the United States for a weekend of wheeling at Southern Missouri Offroad Ranch (SMORR) over Halloween weekend. This beautiful park in Seymour, MO sits on over 940 acres, and miles of trails from easy to extreme. This part truly has something for every skill level of offroading.
Two Jeep Badge of Honor trails also can be found at SMORR:
Pee Wee’s Crossing is a moderate trail that both beginners and novice drivers will enjoy!
Guard Rail is a moderate to demanding trail with a steep hill going into the trail.
Ladies from all skill levels and vehicle types came out to play for the weekend. Twenty-five Jeeps, 1 Toyota and 1 Ford Bronco hit the SMORR trails all day Friday and Saturday. From stock to built out rock climbers, everyone worked together to explore. A beginner group and an intermediate group went out each day, each with a trail lead and tail. All of the trail guides helped each other overcome obstacles and challenges.
It is so inspiring to watch women lift each other up to build their confidence within themselves, their driving abilities and their vehicles. From a “no way in hell” to “that wasn’t so bad” mindset is so empowering. To see the pure joy that comes from pushing boundaries and overcoming challenges is why women’s wheeling events are so much fun!
Each attendee leaves this inspiring event with new friendships and new wheeling skills. From learning how to air down and disconnect sway bars for the first time to changing a tire in a very tight spot, everyone walked away with skills that will take them further offroad. Whether you were behind the wheel or in a passenger seat, I think everyone who attended this year’s Women’s Wheeling Weekend at SMORR felt the love, support and encouragement the wheeling community has to offer.
See you next time on the trails!
A Family Rendezvous Reunion
and article by
NATHAN ANDERSONFamily reunions usually consist of three things: Food, fellowship, and fun. It's at these get togethers that you see members of your family that you may not have seen for a while An abnormal amount of food is prepared The kids play games and the adults catch up and enjoy retelling stories from long ago They are typically incredible times spent reminiscing on the past and looking forward to the future with those people you have grown to love
Often I hear friends refer to the Rendezvous in the Ozarks as one big family reunion. From all across the state, and many from out of state, overlanders gather together one weekend a year in the incredible Ozark National Forest to celebrate not only a hobby, rather a lifestyle of adventure. Rendezvous draws a crowd of hundreds each year and continues to grow. Yet, it's not the size of the event or the plentiful classes and vendor products available to participants that attract most people back each year Spending time with friends is what it's truly all about Those of us from different places all converge on the Rendezvous location to partake in all that a family reunion would have to offer, we just prefer taking it outside to a campground as opposed to a tiny cramped house or a community center
The decision was made to hold the Rendezvous at a different yet familiar location, Mulberry Mountain, and the return to the Rendezvous’s inaugural location was well received and welcomed by all who attended. In addition to the wide open spaces for a large number of campers, the scenery surrounding the several hundred acre clearing on top of the mountain was spectacular, with glimpses of the fall colors
beginning to show I had the privilege of being the official event photographer again for the second year in a row, and mid October is usually the start of prime photography season in the forest. Foggy mornings led to warm, sunshineshrouded mornings and blue hazed evenings with clear skies filling the gap in between. Besides a windy Thursday, the weather couldn't have been much better.
After tagging along on a scouting trip for Cara's all ladies trail ride the next day, I ventured back to the vendor area and meandered around greeting those who I'd gotten to know over the years. There were obviously too many to list them all, and with them all spread out in one large circle this year, my laps around to all of the booths made sure I put in the miles capturing as many moments as possible. Rendezvous is
the perfect place for those in the market for just about anything overlanding related From roof top tents to swags, adventure bikes to huge vans, and everything in between. If you're looking for it, you're almost guaranteed to find it there, as well as someone knowledgeable and helpful in making decisions that are sometimes expensive. It is a one stop shop that will supply all of the essentials for your
backwoods adventure You'll find all the overland hardware you are addicted to, and critical outdoor safety gear for those unfortunate circumstances you need to be prepared for
Of course, what good is all the stuff you buy and strap, bolt, and stuff inside your rig if you have no idea how to use it? Rendezvous has you covered there too Classes consisted of a range of topics including safety, how to, legal, and round table discussions covering all sorts of topics, many taught by the very same vendor reps who sell the products.
Also, Rendezvous is not vehicle brand dependent, so bring what you've got and set up camp with other like minded adventurers.
On the last day of Rendezvous, everyone gathers together on the lawn in front of the sage for the grand door prize giveaway, in which everyone has an equal opportunity to take home thousands of dollars in products donated by the vendors themselves Free swag is tossed out, and this year we even had live music for the first time! The band put on a good show and the weary campers used every last ounce of energy they had left from the long weekend of fun to have one last party before the Rendezvous came to a close
Although, as I said before, when the classes are over, trail rides complete, and the vendors shut down for the day, getting back to camp and being with friends truly cements the Rendezvous as the best event of the year for me. Don't miss Rendezvous in the Ozarks 2023, which is already scheduled for October 12th through 14th, 2023!
