Gratitude
This community has plenty to be thankful for, especially during Thanksgiving. The land of the free is chock-full of jaw-dropping natural wonders, from mountain ranges to national parks, serving up a healthy dose of awe and tranquility for anyone who's ready to explore. If you're up for an adventure, buckle up and hit the road, because the USA's road network is a goldmine of scenic routes and epic road trips, from the historic Route 66 to the breathtaking Pacific Coast Highway. We area also very fortunate that these roads lead to a seemingly endless network of gravel and dirt roads, two-tracks and goat paths to explore. When it's time to make camp for the night, you'll find a vast selection of options across the country, ranging from dispersed campsites and rustic hideaways to fully-loaded sites with all the creature comforts you could ask for. The USA is a melting pot of history and culture, offering plenty of opportunities to learn and be inspired, whether you're exploring ancient indigenous sites or celebrating the legacy of westward expansion. And when Thanksgiving rolls around, there's nothing quite like basking in the tranquility of nature and sharing a feast with loved ones in the great outdoors. Overlanding, car camping, mobile glamping, whatever you call it - it is the perfect recipe for a Thanksgiving feast of community, self-reliance, and adventure! Get off the beaten path and find like-minded enthusiasts to share stories and experiences with. With a can-do spirit and a thirst for exploration, you'll learn to adapt to changing conditions and embrace the unknown, all while bonding with family and friends. And let's not forget the importance of taking care of our natural world and our goals - we are passionate stewards of our environment. From cleanups to trail maintenance to getting involved with access issues, we are a force and can make a difference when we all pull together. Let’s do more in 2024. This Thanksgiving, let's give thanks for the vast and varied landscapes, the chance to connect with nature, with each other, and the awesome experiences that come with this amazing lifestyle.
Utah What’s being lost and what does it mean? As an overlander, what was your motivation to go? Was it to get out and explore this country? To go see things that the normal crowds can’t? Do you like to disperse camp? Watch that sunrise over a faraway mountain as you have that first sip of coffee in the morning while that stream next to you babbles and steams in the dawn? Well something has been happening in some of the most beautiful areas in the country you may not know about and directly affects thousands of campers just like you across the country - the BLM has ruled to shut down over 300 miles of road and hundreds of dispersed camp sites due to a lawsuit brought about by an anti access group called SUWA (Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance) this ruling, called the Labrynth Canyon/Gemini Bridges travel plan closes a HUGE swath of land in the Moab area to ALL motorized travel. This group is well funded by out of state interests and is hell bent on closing many more sites such as these across the country! Some of the best overlooks and campsites in Southern Utah are now going to be off limits to anybody but able bodied hikers. No ADA considerations, no exceptions, just closed to YOU! The lands that your tax money pays for! Just look there are plans to close large areas of the Grand Staircase, areas of Montana and Wyoming, more California Closures and that’s just the beginning. Blue Ribbon Coalition is one of the best organized and most funded groups currently pushing back against these fruitless lawsuits. They have won many court battles keeping your access to your lands open for you and others to enjoy! They are not an anti environmental group, but rather an organization focused on actual, proper land management that allows for the protections needed while letting people enjoy their lands. It is true that this group does have an off-road focus, but are very aware and supportive of the fact that YOU, the dispersed camper, are actually the group that loses the most in these battles! I encourage you to take a look and if you like having places to camp without being in an established campsite piled on top of each other, consider a membership in this great organization and spread the word! If we do not stand up to these anti access extremist groups before long you will only be able to visit places landscaped and polished that the government tells you to go to… By Jake Weikert in Midwest Overlanders. What does it mean to overlanders and dispersed campers?
“The picture above is the Taylor Canyon Overlook located at the end of a route that the Bureau of Land Management lovingly refers to as Route 1026B. It is one of the 317 miles of trails that will be closed by the final travel plan that the BLM released for this area last week. I was in Moab the week prior to the decision being released, and one evening I had time to go explore one trail in the Labyrinth Rims area. I knew this route was on the hit list of routes that might be closed, so I wanted to see what we would be losing if access to this route was lost forever because of a capricious decision in a rigged and broken process. Last year when we helped facilitate thousands of comments from our supporters to advocate for keeping this area open, there was a glimmer of hope that the BLM would choose a reasonable plan if the agency would listen to feedback from so many of the users who actually recreate in this area and use these trails. However, in the last year the team at BRC has watched as agencies across the federal government have proposed, analyzed, and adopted management plans that have become increasingly radical. When I saw the draft management plan proposals for the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument that was released in August on the heels of another 1 million acre land grab by Antiquities Act abuse in Arizona, I started getting the sinking feeling that the current Administration was abandoning all reason and using the administrative planning process to ram through a raft of closures. I knew that the final plan for Labyrinth Rims in Moab would be released by the end of September from updates we get from the federal court that is supervising the settlement that requires the BLM to review most of its travel plans in Utah. If the plans we had been reviewing were any indication of how things would go in Moab, it became clear that the BLM was going to be receiving significant pressure from the political bosses in Washington DC to pick a variation of the worst plan possible for public access to the area.
This is exactly what they did. Our friend and supporter, Patrick McKay provided a great summary of the plan once it was released: “There’s no other way to say this. This travel plan is the worst defeat motorized recreation has suffered in decades. SUWA won. Moab is lost. Almost every major trail west of Moab is closed, including Day Canyon Point, Hey Joe Canyon, Mashed Potatoes, Ten Mile Canyon, Hell Roaring Canyon, Mineral Canyon, Hidden Canyon, 7-Up, two of the three overlooks on Deadman Point, and many more. Poison Spider, Golden Spike, 7 Mile Rim, 3D, Buttes and Towers, Hell Roaring Rim, and Metal Masher will stay open but that’s about it. All motorized access to the Green River except for county B roads is closed. Most overlooks on the rims of Labyrinth Canyon, 10 Mile Canyon, Taylor Canyon, and South Fork 7 Mile Canyon are closed. For no other reason than the fact the BLM decided to completely reverse course and prioritize non-motorized recreation everywhere there is anything remotely scenic, contrary to the express direction of their own resource management plan. I thought this would be bad, but I never dreamed it would be this bad.” Read more on the closure of Moab trails and the fight to restore them on the BRC website. night ride Photo essay by Cara McClellan, Ozark Overland Adventures Roaming the wilds in your trusty Jeep as the fall sun bids farewell is a total thrill ride, but it's not for the faint of heart. As the shadows stretch longer, you'll need to up the ante on your lighting gear to blaze through rough paths. Sure, the darkness adds a dash of enigma and excitement to your journey, but you'll need to be extra vigilant and have top-notch driving skills to avoid unforeseen obstacles. And let's not forget about capturing those epic moments on camera! The low light conditions demand a pro-level setup, silky-smooth exposure techniques, and an artistic eye to capture the true beauty of your off-road escapades amidst the twinkling autumn stars. Here, Cara McClellan shares some of the shots she captured at Overland the Red last month in eastern Kentucky. The epic nature of night riding clearly shines through in her photographs. Enjoy.

2023 HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE
We are the Becker co-founders, Jake and Leena Middaugh, husband/wife duo, Hoosiers at heart, constant creators and visionaries. We have always been on a mission to find adventure within life. As a couple and family we’ve positioned travel and adventure at the forefront of our relationship. From the day we met, trips were planned nearby in the Midwest and far off in the mountains of Colorado. While our careers as artists, screen printers and shop operators within the decorated apparel industry grew, our desire to melt the worlds of adventure and career did as well. Our ultimate dream adventure in life to be entrepreneurs and fulltime adventurers has continued to evolve since we launched Becker in 2019. Through Becker’s mission to create quality goods and inspire adventure, our family is able to live out our adventure-driven dreams while traveling alongside our brand across the country.
AROUND THE CAMPFIRE WITH THE MIDDAUGHS MISSION: QUALITY GOODS TO INSPIRE ADVENTURE.
CAMPSIDE QUICK TAKES WITH THE MIDDAUGHS Our favorite way to enjoy the outdoors: We love the combination that overlanding allows: we get to drive to different destinations, camp and find hiking trails all while being immersed in the outdoors. Our most memorable moment with Becker Supply: Back in the summer of 2019, we set up a booth at the Indiana State Fair, while still working our fulltime jobs. We gained a lot of traction. We met the leasing agent at the local fashion mall, who asked
In crossing paths with our family, you’d experience our relaxed Midwest attitude and entrepreneurial mentality; we’d swap favorite travel tips and entrepreneurial-spirited life lessons and share our reasons why we love to travel with our family. You’d meet our 2-year-old identical twin girls and get a tour of our overlanding rig.
us to hold a pop-up for the holiday season. Two months later we built out and ran a full retail store in the mall (as we still worked our full-time jobs) through the 2019 holiday season. This was a pivotal moment for us because it was then that we realized we really could do this thing as full-time jobs. The most rewarding part of Becker Supply: The ability to create a business that is truly built for our lives. Within our first two years working full-time in our business, we opened a retail store. But we soon learned that our ability to travel was very limited and that the retail store was not going to be a long-term option for us and our business. We closed the retail store at the end of 2022, and since then we have made precise decisions about the growth and direction of Becker to ensure it fits our lifestyle and long-term goals. Our roles within Becker Supply: Just as we’ve been crafting the business to be what we need out of life, we’ve been crafting the roles we play in the business. The basis of our experience
“...THE KIDS ARE A SOURCE OF CONSTANT INSPIRATION AND A REASON TO TRULY CREATE SOMETHING THAT WE CAN BE PROUD OF...” was spent in the decorated apparel industry; Jake and I both studied design and are very creatively motivated. At the core of Becker, Jake is the visionary behind the brand and I integrate the ideas and bring them to life. Advice for someone looking to start a business like Becker Supply: Just start. You don’t need to make big sweeping life-changing decisions right away. It’s really the little things that bring a vision to life. Figure out what you want to create/sell and then start testing it; building out the system and the marketing can come in time as you get a grasp on selling the product. Plus, once you’ve made smaller moves to bring your vision to life and you’ve seen cash come in, those bigger lifechanging decisions are much easier to make. What’s the biggest inspiration behind Becker Supply? We may have started this business before we had any children out of a love and desire to travel and be outdoors. However, the kids are a source of constant inspiration and a reason to truly create something that we can be proud of, learn through and travel alongside, allowing us to live a life truly for and controlled by us.

Running a diesel heater to warm your tent or car during winter camping can be a safe and effective way to stay warm, but it's essential to follow proper safety guidelines to avoid accidents or health issues. Here are some safety tips for using a diesel heater in cold weather: 1. Proper Ventilation: Ensure adequate ventilation in the tent or car to prevent the buildup of carbon monoxide (CO) and other toxic fumes. Crack open a window or door to allow fresh air to circulate. A CO detector is highly recommended to monitor indoor air quality. 2. Fuel Safety: Use the correct type of diesel fuel specified by the heater's manufacturer. Store the fuel in a safe container away from the heater and any open flames. Refuel the heater outdoors to prevent spills and fumes from accumulating inside. 3. Positioning: Place the heater on a stable, level surface, and make sure it's positioned away from flammable materials, including bedding, curtains, and clothing. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for minimum clearances. 4. Check for Leaks: Before lighting the heater, inspect the fuel lines and connections for any signs of leaks. If you detect a leak, do not use the heater and address the issue immediately. 5. Maintain a Safe Distance: Make sure there is a safe distance between the heater and any combustible materials. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for clearance distances. 6. Supervision: Do not leave the heater unattended, especially when it's running. Keep a close eye on it, and check for any issues like unusual odors, smoke, or malfunctions. 7. Heat Shields: If your heater comes with a heat shield, use it. Heat shields can help protect surrounding surfaces from excessive heat. 8. Fire Extinguisher: Keep a fire extinguisher rated for fuel fires nearby and ensure you know how to use it. It's a good safety precaution to have one in your camping gear. 9. Burn Hazards: Be cautious of hot surfaces on the heater and the exhaust pipe. Keep flammable items and your body parts away from these areas. 10. Follow the Manual: Always read and follow the manufacturer's instructions for your specific diesel heater. These guidelines will provide crucial information for safe and efficient operation. 11. Warm-Up Outside: If your heater has not been used for an extended period, allow it to warm up outdoors before bringing the hose into your tent or car to avoid fume buildup. 12. Emergency Plan: In the event of an emergency or if you start feeling unwell (headache, dizziness, nausea), immediately turn off the heater, ventilate the space, and seek fresh air. It's a good idea to have an evacuation plan in place. 13. Regular Maintenance: Maintain your diesel heater by cleaning it and having it serviced as recommended by the manufacturer. A wellmaintained heater is less likely to malfunction or cause safety issues. Remember that using a diesel heater in confined spaces requires vigilance and caution. If you are not experienced with diesel heaters, it's a good idea to practice using one in a safe environment before taking it camping. Always prioritize safety when using any heating equipment in a camping setting, especially in the winter when conditions can be harsh.
DIESEL HEATER SAFETY
The information provided is based on general safety guidelines for using diesel heaters, and it's intended to offer a set of best practices for safe operation in cold weather camping. These guidelines are consistent with wellestablished safety principles for using heating appliances in confined spaces. For more detailed and manufacturer-specific safety information, it's advisable to consult the user manual and safety instructions provided with your specific diesel heater. Always prioritize safety when using heating equipment in any camping or recreational setting.

When selecting gifts for loved ones who are passionate about outdoor, overland, off-road, and adventure travel activities, it's essential to consider their specific interests and needs. Tailoring your gift to their needs and passions will show how much you care and appreciate their love for the great outdoors. Here's some tips to help you choose the perfect gifts for all the outdoor adventure enthusiasts on your list.
PERSONALIZED GEAR Outdoor enthusiasts often value high-quality gear that enhances their experiences. Start by identifying their specific needs, whether it's camping, hiking, or off-road adventures. Personalized gear not only enhances their outdoor adventures but also adds a personal touch to your gift.

Consider gifting them books on wilderness survival, navigation, or outdoor photography. You can also provide a subscription to a travel or adventure magazine to keep them inspired. Subscriptions to related apps (think Gaia GPS, OnX, Garmin InReach) are useful and appreciated. It combines the thrill of the hunt with the joy of celebrating the holiday season and creates lifelong memories.

Nobody knows eastern Kentucky like Bill and Deb Reed, and their great camera work lets the beauty of the fall foliage and awesome trails shine through. Bill and Deb take us to Callie’s Lake and Campground near Stanton, KY, where the Scond Annual Overland the Red was held last month.
Matt and Cara ask the question- “Does Kentucky Have the Best Off-Roading East of the Mississippi?” The answer is in their Overland the Red 2023 video recap (first of two?) “This was my first time in the Red River Gorge area of Kentucky to attend Overland the Red. WOW!!! I was blown away by the trails and scenery in the area and want to go back for more!! “
This is a fun talk/discussion of the Overland the Red event and it was refreshing to see the creators take the time to talk to the attendees and see what their experience was at the event.
Fletch is back with his take on leave no trace and tread lightly principles “”In this episode, I'll delve into the art of responsible Overlanding, focusing on "Minimizing Your Overland Footprint." Overlanding is an incredible way to explore the great outdoors, but it's crucial that we do so with care and respect for the environment.”
KOAR 2023 Playlist We skipped last month’s video faves so we neglected to bring you all the good stuff from KOAR 2023. Take a look and see videos from perennial faves such as All Things Overlanding, Adventure Anywhere, Dirt Trekking, Orbis Overlanding and more. What a hoot, thanks for all the love!
