DAY TWO - EVENING

Following day two’s adventures of dusty, sandy trails and beachfront points of interests, our 14-rig convoy rolled into the gorgeous Lake Superior State Forest Campground to spend the night. Once again, we were spoiled with a beautiful evening and quick access to the beach, just thirty feet away.

DAY 3 Our journey continued the next morning, on a day dubbed the ‘Pick Your Own Adventure Day’. Day three started as a group outing to the old, petrified remains of a forest that once burned so hot a hundred years ago, that the stumps still remain today. From there, everyone was given the option to either travel to the Husky Haven Kennels or Miners Fall. While seeing a kennel full of amazing and hardworking sled dogs would have been an incredible sight to see, a few others and myself had their own furry companions, so it was best to take the alternative trip to Miners Fall in Munising, MI instead Miners Fall was well worth the trip The Miners River flows and falls over a sandstone outcrop from about 40 feet up After regrouping and refueling in Munising, we headed out to a very serene, dispersed campsite along the Au Train River. Since we arrived early enough in the day, once again, we were given the option to choose how to spend the next few hours. Option one was to hit more local trails, while option two was to set up camp and recoup. As expected, most of the group left for the trails. No regrets not joining the group, as I had a chance to really take in the calming nature of the forest, capture some amazing shots, and enjoy my first shower of the trip That night, a few of us stayed up past midnight to see the stars and Milky Way galactic cluster It was so hard to call it a night that evening

A GOAL

WHAT IS OVERLANDING?

By Jason Fletcher

Editor's note: This article appeared in the July 2020 issue of Northology Adventures and this question is still relevant to the sheer number of folks just discovering overlanding today Overlanding is a term that is becoming more and more popular However, it's still something that most people aren't even aware of What is it? Where did it originate? Has the definition changed over the years? What's so special about it? The goal of this article is to answer those questions and to get you interested in giving it a try if you haven’t already!

Definition: Overlanding is self-reliant overland travel to remote destinations where the journey is the principal goal. Typically, but not exclusively, it is accomplished wit mechanized off road capable transport (from bicycles to trucks) where the principal form of lodging is camping, often lasting for extended lengths of time (months to years) and spanning international boundaries.

HISTORY OF OVERLANDING

Originally, the purpose of these roads was to access remote sites from cattle farms to secret atomic bomb testing facilities to air strips. He and his crew would often spend extended periods of time in the bush and he depended on his trusty Land Rover to get him where he needed to go. Later on, the term for Overlanding took on a different meaning with the running of the Camel Trophy events. This Overlanding race ran from 1980 until 2000. It was best known for the Land Rovers that traversed extremely challenging terrain during the race. These Land Rovers were heavily modified in order to succeed in such challenging conditions. The modifications included winches, roll cages, modified electrical systems, transmission breathers, snorkels, upgraded transmissions and suspension, larger mud terrain tires, lighting, bull bars, and more.

Later on, the term for Overlanding took on a different meaning with the running of the Camel Trophy events. If you want to learn more about Overlanding, starting with the basics, feel free to check out my YouTube channel where there are a number of useful resources! Thanks for reading and get out to live, learn, and discover!

The term "Overlanding" was coined in Australia in the early 1900's One of the early people to inspire this term was Len Beadell In the 1940's and 50's, he was responsible for constructing about 3,700 miles of road through the Australian bush which finally made some of the more remote parts of Australia accessible Some of these roads are still used by Overlanders today.

Or, do you just want to throw a couple of Plano crates in the back and take off for the weekend? With so many choices, the hobby never gets boring! Some people spend thousands of dollars and some people spend very little, if any. This is yet another way for you to make your vehicle, gear, and experience what you want through either spending money or using your skills and ingenuity. Once more, it doesn’t matter what your budget, as long as you’re learning from each trip and improving your setup to make the most of each future trip!

actually take it off road and on trips Whether you spend thousands or just go with what you’ve already got laying around, taking trips and exploring is what makes someone a real Overlander. Despite my Trasharoo and my tendency to love gear (and patches, don't forget the patches), I do get out as frequently as possible to try to hit the most challenging trails to push my rig and my skills as a driver. So, while we Overlanders may not be forging into the great Outback of Australia to craft roads where no one has been before, we are getting out there, getting away from the grind of normal life, and enjoying nature! Since those earlier days of Overlanding, the definition has changed pretty dramatically. Overlanding has become quite popular and as a result, there are some tropes that have become almost comical. For example, people with Trasharoos (heavy duty trashbags that often hang on the outside of the vehicle) sometimes have to endure some ribbing about them being "true overlanders" due to the omnipresence of the stigmatized trash bag. There is also another stereotype that most Overlanders are hipsters. There definitely are some people who can ascribe that stereotype to themselves and there are also people who spend tons of money on their rigs and mods However, in my opinion, the key is that they get out and

Lastly, the best thing about Overlanding is the sheer number of different options for the way you can do it. There are numerous vehicles that would work great for Overlanding trips. There are literally thousands of options for different gear that can make life easier or help you do more while away from home. Some of the most popular options for Overlanding rigs are Jeeps, Toyotas, Land Rovers, and I personally drive a Nissan Xterra Choosing your rig is a lot of fun and allows you to show your personality and to differentiate you from everyone else that may be into Overlanding.

Once your rig is selected, you get to decide how you want to modify it. Do you want to go with a 6 inch lift and 40" tires? Are you more about the way your truck looks or the way it functions? Do you want a full sliding drawer system in the back that gives you easy access to your fridge/freezer?

the koar community Creating community was goal number one. Carol and Todd Mowrer were at that first meeting at Northwinds Adventures along with Chris Offenwanger, Rob Ozarowicz and myself We were all in agreement there is a need for an event for the Upper Midwest overlanding and adventure travel community, and it has to be here, in the Upper Peninsula All we wanted was to gather with those overland and offroad camping types we passed on the highways and backroads as we traveled the upper peninsula This is how KOAR was born We attendees at this meeting had no idea how much our lives would change in the next five years, and how much this community would come to mean to all of us. We also had no idea how much love and friendship that Todd and Carol had to give, and how much loss they and the community would suffer. by cindy bpope y cindy pope

To say that Todd and Carol love the Keweenaw is an understatement, and their love for the overland community and the KOAR event is just as strong. They travel the country to promote their teardrop trailers, and tell everyone they meet about this laid back, overland family reunion. They have helped shape the event, have given us guidance and support beyond measure, and were instrumental in bringing KOAR to Trails End in Copper Harbor in 2020. We are thrilled to have TC Teardrops as KOAR title sponsor for the third year in a row, and for the role they have played in making this event a success and this community as vibrant as possible. But even though this last year has taken Rob from us, and right before the last KOAR, Todd & Carol's dear friend Doug, this is not a story of sadness or sorrow. We all have had loss, sickness and pain This is a story of the gratefulness, learning and growth We have watched those around us change, grow into the voids left behind and open their arms to new opportunities instead of shrink, diminish and fade into grief Yes, the losses still sting BAD But seeing people lending helping hands, learning, coping, taking leaps of faith and doubling down on gratitude is inspiring Todd, Carol, you have been an example of grace under pressure and this community is stronger because of you Your friendship and kindness have lifted us all up at one time or another. Heck, I did not hardly mention your business or products in this article! Pair that thought with the idea that overlanding is not about the journey OR the destination. It is about the people you meet along the way.

Orbis is a vehicle outfitter heavily geared at the Subaru offroad / overland community Through our carefully selected dealer relationships, and our own products we can help to guide, build and support the Subaru community in their seeking of adventures We’re happy to work with non Subarus as well, as many of our dealers are not specific to Subaru We also design, build and sell our own line of products, most notably the Rack Wing, which is an exterior mounting plate for items such as Rotopax tanks and more The Rack Wing originally launched on the Crosstrek to help those with the OEM side rails expand their capacity for carrying items, and we now support the Rack Wings across almost all of the Subaru models (including the popular Wilderness series) and have current fitment for the OEM Roof Rack with factory or aftermarket cross bars, Prinsu and Rhino Racks More bracket options are under development We also design and build other mounting solutions, molle interior panels Other products in the works

Our Orbis branded products are derived from meeting challenges that we face out on the trails or trips, or through discussions specifically with the local groups we and friends we go on adventures with So we understand the challenges of running the Subarus I take the same approach to the dealers I work with and products I resell I will only work with companies whose products I have used, or are using. Sometimes it’s true that products get replaced on the build, but if it’s a company I’m a dealer with I can speak to the use cases for their products from experience, even if I’m not currently running them ORBIS BRANDED PRODUCTS ARE DERIVED CHALLENGES OUT TRAILS." Location Zeeland,

PATRICK MCKENNEY OF ORBIS OVERLANDING TALKS ABOUT HIS BUSINESS, SUBARUS AND OVERLANDING.

Now, as I continue with it I appreciate the comfort of the drive, the fuel consumption and the size Although, size can work against you, as you have to be creative about where things are mounted and stored and how it’s all built

9 Tell us how the Subaru market is different from a general off road client with a “traditional rig”

It was interesting, I learned alot. The process is not current to the way those of us doing guided overland trips are ‘using’ the State Forests, and everyone I spoke with understood that, but we needed to make it work within the framework provided All the UP Forest Managers were helpful throughout the process, there was a couple of cases where it was good to have them involved, as part of my original route ran across a bridge which is compromised So that was very helpful

7 What other events do you participate in? For 2022, I’m a sponsor for KOAR, sponsor / vendor at FlatFest which is a Subaru event, and will be leading the FlatFest Overland trip in late September I’m also doing small events and things with my local Subaru group, the Third Coast Subies I’m going to try to be at at least one additional larger event for 2023.

The Subarus are very capable vehicles, the AWD is highly advanced and although work differently than traditional 4WD, is able to push through many situations What I tell

"IT’S VERY IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND, IN CONTEXT WITH OVERLANDING / OFFROADING A SUBARU, WHAT THEY ARE AND WHAT THEY ARE NOT."

3 What is your five year plan for Orbis?

Yes, much like so many others, it’s made sourcing parts a bit more tricky, and has made adjusting to the growth of Orbis Overlanding a bit of a guessing game Getting to have a bit of a better pattern going here of late, which probably means something will shift again 5

Tell me a little about why you did the Expedition Series trips?

The idea behind the Expedition Series was two part First, to build up in length, duration and challenge over the course of a couple of years, and to unify the trips into something with some shared commonality As mentioned, Orbis Overlanding is a side gig, which means I don’t have unlimited time to be away to do big long epic trips, and do them in close proximity to each other on the calendar. Many of the people who I regularly venture out with are in the same situation So doing the Expedition Series gives us a shared vision and goals on adventures we’d like to achieve over the next 2 3 years Not everyone who comes on any given trip, will be on all of them, but they are each part of the prep and the whole adventure Second, we wanted to look for a way to give back, and this we’re trying to have a community / philanthropic type of theme to the trips For the UP Expedition in summer of 2022 we worked in partnership with KORC Exactly what this looks like for the next two trips is still being worked out

Not sure, potentially sure I’d be thrilled to be doing this fulltime, currently it’s a part time passion project, and my main help comes from my daughters So making enough to support my family and getting to help people outfit their Subaru’s all over the world seoul be very exciting Growth year 1 to year 2 has been significant I think what I’ll continue to focus on is producing highly sought after products, solid advice and outfitting and treating my customers like my friends and hope that will keep it moving forward 4 Has the global supply chain affected your business?

8 Why Subaru?

We’ve had 2 Suabru’s for quite a while now and really liked many aspects of the cars When a lease on my previous Crosstrek was coming up, I was starting to get intrigued by the world of Overlanding, and then came across the fact that people are doing this in Subarus and I was sold So I bought a new Crosstrek and here we are I’ve always been a bit of a ‘swim upstream’ person, so the Subaru fit that bill as being a bit on the outside of the norm

6 What was it like working with the DNR for the permits?

I have two daughters, 10 and (almost) 13, I’m working on getting them more comfortable with camping, but also like to coach their fall and winter (indoor) soccer teams

people who are starting out is it’s very important to understand, in context with overlanding / offroading a Subaru, what they are and what they are not Once you have that well in hand they will take you almost anywhere you want to go Despite some cliches that exists, they are reliable, the CVT and AWD work well together, The fuel consumption over the long hauls is good and the ride in my opinion is very comfortable on and off pavement But they are not without their own set of challenges, space is one of them, as mentioned before, creativity is key when outfitting for overlanding, especially if your looking to be offgrid and self sustained for a period of time They don’t have the potential for as much clearance as some of the more traditional rigs, but this is an area where shorter and more narrow wheelbase in many cases and work to our favor I won’t say I’d never drive anything other than a Subaru, because never is a really long time But for the foreseeable future, I really dig my little ‘Trek 10 Tell us a little bit about yourself, family, interests, pets, hobbies Live in Zeeland Mi, ‘on the farm’, we recently purchased my inlaws house which is on the family farm property The farm is active, my wife and her brother own and operate wholesale greenhouses on the farm property, and a majority of the crop land is rented to a different local farmer. We have 3 cats, 4 cows and an adopted chicken who has wandered from someplace and has been sticking around for nearly 6 weeks. No dog yet, but maybe soon. Mt day job is in the IT industry for a very large international company, I very much enjoy it and enjoy working with people all over the world I’ve been work from home for almost 10 years

11 What is overlanding or the outdoors to you? The adventure, and the comradery I enjoy the mapping and route planning and the learning about new places and then getting to go see and execute on that Getting out to remote places and seeing the beauty around me helps me to recharge So the adventure, being someone who likes the mapping and route planning starts from the moment I decide on a destination Because once I have a destination, I get to dig in and make the trip not only about the destination, and that is fun Free
