Llandudno Bay in all of its summer glory. This great shot was taken from the top of the Great Orme overlooking the pier with the Little Orme in the distance. Although it looks older, most of what you see today on and around the promenade was conceived, designed and purpose built from 1846 onwards by surveyors, architects and planners working for Lord Mostyn and his successors. From such a spectacular vantage point it’s easy to see how their plans came to life – and why Llandudno is known as the Queen of Welsh Resorts…

HOW TO KEEP YOUR DOG SAFE THIS SUMMER Summer is an exciting time, with the sun shining (mostly!), and the temperatures rising, this gives us many opportunities to get outside and explore our beautiful country with our pets. However, there are things to consider throughout this sunny season:
J Keeping your dog cool Whether you are taking your dog on a long hike, a stroll in a local park or an afternoon in the pub it is important to be prepared for all types of weather conditions. Especially living in North Wales because we can go through all four seasons in one day.
J Check the weather and plan your walks around this, avoid taking your dog out during the sun’s highest point which is usually midday.
J Pack your bag well, not forgetting plenty of water. We

Water Safety It can be difficult to resist the glistening water when the temperatures rise, with water sports such as paddling boarding becoming increasingly popular. The majority of us assume that all dogs can swim when in reality this is not often true. If you are unsure about your dog’s swimming capabilities then there are a few steps you can take to protect them.

In 1606 the water supposedly cured Sir Roger Bodenham of a gross tumour in the legs and, centuries later in 1805, cured a paralysed servant girl – coincidentally named Winefrid. The miraculous effects of the water is said to stem from a grisly historical act when St Winefride was beheaded by a prince for rejecting his advances. Access to the shore is down a steep sandy path, so it’s not one to be carrying buckets of equipment with you. Dogs are allowed, but they must be in vehicles when passing through the farm. Beautiful botanicals The North Wales landscape lends itself perfectly to foraging for fresh botanicals, so it’s no surprise that the region is home to some of the best gins in the country…
Down a quiet lane in the heart of the Flintshire countryside, an extraordinary alchemy is taking place. Carefully chosen and prepared botanicals and infusions are gently commingling in a traditional copper still as eight tortoises of varying size bimble about in the garden outside. Time ticks by, drip by measured drip, in this place where everything is considered and nothing is ever rushed… This is the home of the Clwydian Range Distillery, quite possibly the smallest distillery in Wales. This small business Lemon and Lime Gin from the Clwydian Range Distillery
is solidly built on true family values, with everybody from the children to grandparents being involved at every stage, from picking local gorse petals through to labelling and delivery – indeed, it was the children who were keen to have a tortoise as the logo on their Cariad Gin bottles in tribute to the family’s much-loved pets, foraging for gorse flowers just as the tortoises forage for their food. After a couple of years of trialling different recipes and flavours while waiting for various permissions and licences to be granted, Cariad Gin was launched in November 2018, with the introduction of the first two varieties, Marmalade & Bay Leaf

Gin and Blackcurrant Gin, followed by the more recent launch of Lemon and Lime Gin and Plum Crumble Gin. Sweet offerings indeed, but the Clwydian Range isn’t the only distillery that has flavoured gins. Did you know Penderyn Distillery produce the award-winning Brecon Gin range?!

Up first is Brecon Special Reserve Gin, which won a Gin Master at the Spirits Business Gin Masters in 2021. Next up is Brecon Botanicals Gin which has a rich complex taste, and won a Gold at the Gin Masters in 2021. But there are also three delicious flavoured gins – Chocolate Orange (a rich velvety chocolate flows around this gin), Rose Petal (rose petal and strawberries married with tart fresh raspberries and juniper) and Rhubarb and Cranberry (a tangy rhubarb blending with bittersweet cranberry). These gins are available from Penderyn’s Llandudno distillery shop which is open seven days a week. Or, if you want to try before you buy, you can choose them as your free tasters in the bar if you take an hour-long tour of their Llandudno distillery. Food for thought
At the time of writing, summer is taking its sweet time to get here. Each day appears to be a trip through the seasons: sunny in the morning, rainy at night, or vice versa. On several occasions, I’ve been tricked into wearing shorts by the morning sun, only to find myself shivering and rain-soaked by the middle of the afternoon. Last year by this time, we were seating people outside Paysanne. It was that hot, guests were begging to dine alfresco. Eating outside is one of the great bonuses of summer. For the length of a glorious meal, you might as well be somewhere along the Mediterranean coast. Having friends over to eat in the garden is always a highlight of the summer for me. If you want to gather your pals around a table one balmy afternoon and take your mind abroad, this

Save your energy! With the cost of living rising by the day it is essential that you are making every saving possible. Gareth Jones from Carbon Zero Renewables shares his top ten energy saving tips…
1. Make sure you have swapped all of your light bulbs over to LED. Swapping to a LED light can save you £180 over its lifetime. 2. If you have electric heaters, look at swapping these out for infrared heaters. Ensure convection/oil heaters are switched off when not required. They can cost you nearly £1 an hour to run otherwise! 3. Ensure any leaks around doors and windows are sealed to avoid expensive heat escaping this winter. 4. Ensure you have maximum amounts of insulation in the loft, again to retain the heat in your home. Heat rises, so the loft is always a place heat can escape. 5. Heating controls can save you lots this winter. Whether it’s a thermostat on the wall or valves on the radiator – you need to be in control of the controls so that you can avoid heating unused areas. 6. Simply drying your clothes outside or on an airer can save you lots of money over the year. Just make sure you open your windows even on the latch to get air in to the property to avoid causing damp. 7. If you live alone or have a small family then consider buying an air fryer as these are cheaper to run than conventional ovens. 8. During the winter open your curtains and allow natural heat gain to warm your home. In the summer you can close your curtains to stop this, keeping rooms cool to avoid fans being used. 9. If you have an electric shower take shorter showers as electric showers use lots of electric. Fitting a mixer shower off the gas boiler could save you two thirds of the equivalent electricity. 10. And finally, once you have reduced everything you can to its absolute lowest, it might be time to look at generating your own electric via solar panels…
Gareth Jones, founder of Carbon Zero Renewables, is a multi-award-winning international entrepreneur from North Wales. He is well known in the construction and renewable energy industry having been the youngest ever president of the Federation of Master Builders. He was also identified by Wales Business Insider as one of the top 25 Entrepreneurs in Wales, one of the Western Mail’s Top 35 under 35, Business Man of the Year and Winner of the Institute of Directors, Director of the Year.

Myddelton student receives major accolade
Coby Chan, a young science prodigy at Myddelton College has received a major international accolade from one of the world’s oldest science organisations. 17-year-old Coby gained a gold award at the Royal Society of Chemistry Olympiad in competition against students aged up to 19. He was the only 17-year-old to qualify for the second stage of the annual event, a four-hour exam conducted remotely, which is organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry and dates back to 1841, making it the oldest and most prestigious chemistry organisation globally. “The recognition from the Chemistry Olympiad is a testimony to Coby’s character and determination to succeed because in that four-hour exam he was really operating at second-year university level,” said Martin Galvin, Coby’s Chemistry teacher. www.myddeltoncollege.com

St David’s College pupils win national business award St David’s College is very proud to reveal that three
of its business pupils have won a national business award. The 10X Challenge encourages young people to develop an enterprising mind and prepare for the world of work as they develop what business they can create with just £10 in four weeks. A Year 10 dream team comprising of Arwen Fflur, Will Rutherford and Daisy Slotwiner-Duffell have won the category of ‘Best 10X Business for Good’ in the 11-14 age group. Judges were impressed by the entrepreneurial skills they displayed in developing a business that encourages people to donate their phones and other IT devices, which are then refurbished and then donated to local care homes. “Arwen, Daisy and Will all have worked very hard on this and I am very proud of them,” said business teacher Beth Dexter who guided them through the competition. “The business they developed has very green credentials which obviously impressed the judges.” www.stdavidscollege.co.uk

Colin Jackson renews Wrexham Glyndwr Chancellor role
Wrexham Glyndwr University has announced that former Olympic athlete and wellknown media figure Colin Jackson CBE will continue with his role of Chancellor of Wrexham Glyndwr University until 2025. Appointed in January 2019, Colin is the university’s fourth Chancellor and was officially welcomed into the role at a ceremony held on February 15 2019. The Chancellor is a figurehead and acts as an ambassador for the university and its staff and students, attending a number of important duties – including the university’s graduation ceremonies, which Colin recently attended, and representing the university at various events. “I am thrilled to be asked to remain as the university’s Chancellor for another three years,” commented Colin. “It’s a role I’ve really enjoyed having and hopefully I can make up for lost time over the next three years after the pandemic restricted what I’ve been able to participate in for the last two years. Wrexham Glyndwr is a fantastic university and continues to achieve some really great things, including being rated second in the UK for quality of teaching in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022 and rising 41 places in The Guardian University Guide 2022 league table. Plus, something close to my own heart, retaining the top spot for social inclusion in England and Wales.” www.glyndwr.ac.uk

Legal team raises cash for charities Members of an intrepid team of adventurers from a North Wales law firm are limbering up for a gruelling charity fundraiser – taking on the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge. Lawyers from Lanyon Bowdler, including a number from the team based in Conwy, will start at 4am on Saturday, 16th July, and by the time the challenge is complete, hopefully less than 24 hours later, the team will have covered a total walking distance of 27.4km and ascended a total of 2,334 metres. The three climbs take in Pen y Fan, Cadair Idris and Snowdon, and the hikers are

Walking
world with North Wales Wildlife Trust
Way to the iconic church at Llandecwyn, with breathtaking mountain and coastal views. Explosive past, wild future From 1865 until 1995 this corner of North West Wales was world-renowned for its explosives expertise. The remote location and natural, steep-sided valleys made it the perfect place for a specialist factory which, at its height, employed over 500 people. During the Second World War, over 17 million grenades were produced at this site! The Wildlife Trust took over the site when it was decommissioned – since then, it’s nature that has exploded … Today, wandering through the lovely mixture of habitats and gazing out at the spectacular views, it’s hard to imagine the site’s industrial history. The woodland provides homes to nesting redstarts, pied flycatchers and tree pipits and, on a summers day, the grassy glades are great places to spot butterflies and wildflowers. The heathland that covers the higher ground hides secretive nightjars and basking reptiles: four of the six UK reptile species are commonly seen here. The site’s industrial past has provided perfect habitats for its most significant residents, the lesser horseshoe bats who make their homes in the old buildings and tunnels.
THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW The total length of the walk is 6 miles. Most of the walk is based around fairly standard countryside terrain, although you will encounter some steep gradients (including steps within Gwaith Powdwr Nature Reserve) and uneven ground, so wear sturdy footwear. Directions:
J Take the road out of Penrhyndeudraeth towards Pont Briwet (the old toll bridge to Harlech). Take the first road into Cooke’s Industrial Estate, following it for approximately 80 metres to the reserve gates and parking here (SH 616 388). MAGAZINE
IN THE
STARS...
While everyone remembers Russell Grant from his Breakfast TV appearances in the 1980’s, most people don’t realise that Russell was the first astrologer in over 300 years to present a horoscope forecast to a member of the Royal Family (HRH Queen Mother). Now dubbed the “Royal Astrologer” Russell has appeared on numerous television shows, including Strictly Come Dancing. He divides his time between London and his North Wales home near Portmeirion. www.russellgrant.com
July’s horoscopes brought to you by Russell Grant ARIES (March 21st – April 20th) Now is the time to join a group and participate in activities that encourage and motivate you. The time you spend on mundane chores or over-done tasks can only leave you feeling exhausted and frustrated. The time you spend with yourself is not wasted because sometimes you should be by yourself to help you relax from the pressures of your day.
LIBRA (September 24th – October 23rd) Sometimes, the most difficult tasks are essential for your learning process. Don’t be enticed to cut corners. Get rid of the habit by paying attention to each action now. It’s not necessarily easy to accept forgiveness but the ability to let go of past resentments will allow you to move on without emotional baggage. Talk about a painful experience from the past and take time to let go.
TAURUS (April 21st – May 21st) You may want to increase your knowledge, talents or experience as great opportunities await discovery. Do not delay. Now is the perfect time to take action. Are you currently in a relationship? Be careful about disclosing too much about your past too soon. If you’ve been together with your partner for some time, you’ll know when to talk about a sensitive topic.
SCORPIO (October 24th – November 22nd) A rift is brewing as you are caught among a crowd of people who have opposing goals. Do your best to avoid getting involved in the conflict. Keep your ears and eyes open to be aware of any dispute within your vicinity. Be mindful if you feel that an acquaintance isn’t telling the truth. Be aware of what’s being said about you since whispers are likely to spread and become twisted.
GEMINI (May 22nd – June 21st) The month begins at an intersection. A crucial decision needs to be taken and only you can decide the next steps. You’ve come a long way but this is just the beginning. It’s your choice which path to choose. Don’t let anyone affect your decision! Your partner or a friend who has a penchant for routines will attempt to hold you back from moving forward.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd – December 21st) The effort of putting issues with your relationships in order is crucial. However, you shouldn’t get so involved that it makes it difficult to stay in touch with the people you love. You might have been so focused on your issues that you’ve not thought about how much someone depends on you. If your partner doesn’t feel like they’re as active or adventurous as you.
CANCER (June 22nd – July 23rd) You can anticipate the future but nothing is guaranteed. It’s a matter of preparing yourself for change. Something you’ve been dreaming about for a while is beginning to take shape and come to fruition. An energy boost is felt when you’re in a committed relationship and it will make you feel excited about what’s on the horizon for you both.
CAPRICORN (December 22nd – January 20th) A new partnership will be the most challenging. Are you willing to take the risk? If you don’t go with your heart, you’ll wonder whether you should. Don’t believe in what others are telling you, even if they claim that they’ve got your interests in mind. Follow your instincts. You’re at the edge of a significant life shift. The only thing you need to do is breathe deeply and get going.
LEO (July 24th – August 23rd) Set a goal and adhere to it. Speed and accuracy are crucial when it comes to family and business matters. In addition, you must be capable of sitting, smiling and unwinding from time to time. You believed that you were able to trust somebody but there’s an impression on the 8th that they’re not being completely truthful with you.
AQUARIUS (January 21st – February 19th) Your ability to make people feel relaxed and comfortable makes you extremely popular. However, be sure that your colleagues and friends don’t start demanding too much of you. Even strangers and friends will often seek out your guidance and assistance. People are impressed by your personality and kindness and you’re a significant influence on your friends.
VIRGO (August 24th – September 23rd) This July’s experiences will be profoundly meaningful, and as you look at the facets of your life from different perspectives, you’ll feel your perception and understanding grow. If your relationship with a loved one isn’t the most exciting, it’s possible to change things up. There might have to be a romantic getaway to give you the chance to connect physically and emotionally.
PISCES (February 20th – March 20th) Making your own decisions can create a more accessible and healthier path than allowing others to influence your choices and guide you. It’s possible to remind someone of the importance of not worrying about their work and other responsibilities constantly. Are you married? A joint commitment can aid you in forming a solid bond that can become more valuable than gold.
