May is a wonderful month to enjoy our native wildflowers, including bluebells – a perennial favourite which sets our woodlands alight with a haze of richly fragrant, bright blue blooms. If you can’t get to a wooded area, look out for them growing in road verges, in small patches of woodland and in parks and gardens. Did you know? • The UK is home to more than half the world’s population of bluebells – just one reason why their continued protection is really important. • Folklore used to tell that bluebells ring at daybreak to call fairies to the woods – keep an ear out! • Gum from bluebell roots was used to glue feathers to arrows – and, more recently, in bookbinding. Visit your local Wildlife Trust’s website to discover where to see spring wildflowers in North Wales. With 35 nature reserves spread across the length and breadth of the region, there’s bound to be a magnificent display near you! www.northwaleswildlifetrust.org.uk/nature-reserves Image credit: Bluebells courtesy of Josh Raper, Conservation Media

You & Your
Pet
WHY SHOULD YOU GROOM YOUR PET? Pet care doesn’t start and end with feeding and walking, grooming is another important activity that needs to be put into action when you have a pet. Most of our pets have hair and, like us humans, it needs to be kept in good condition because if not it can have a negative impact on your pet… We often look at our pets and may be inclined to think that they are okay to groom themselves because this is something they do naturally. While they can give themselves a good clean, there are actions we can take to make it easier for them. When not taken care of, your pet’s hair can become matted, this can result in their fur or hair pulling at the skin which can be extremely heavy and uncomfortable. If not treated, matted hair can lead to skin irritations that may cause infections. In extreme cases, this has been known to restrict movement and may even result in an adverse change in the appearance of your pet. Introduce your pet to its new set of grooming tools, giving There are simple steps to avoiding your pet’s coat becoming

change from winter to summer as the speed at which their hooves grow increases in the summer months. Regular grooming will keep your pet happy and healthy. Grooming gives you and your pet the perfect opportunity to spend some one-on-one time together which is great for bonding. Starting this at an early stage in their lives so they don’t feel anxious or scared will make it easier on you both, however, if you have an older rescue animal or are new to grooming then your pet may be unsure about these new tools they are faced with.

Gola is a lampshade making business born from lockdown. Mother and son team, Mari and Ifan, cleverly bring their individual senses of style to their range of lampshades, which are made from their studio on the Menai Strait, using intricately detailed old maps. We decided to find out a little bit more about them, and their local business… Tell us about how you came to work together? We (mother and son) found ourselves living under the same roof as lockdown began. Ironically this time unlocked creativity and enterprise in both of us. Ifan is a graphic designer and Mari is an author. Both of us shared ideas during lockdown and began a small business called ‘Gola’ (Welsh word for light) creating designs for lampshades that we started manufacturing

Energy price rises see homeowners in rush for new £5k green heating A leading North Wales renewable energy installer is reporting a 600 per cent rise in enquiries as homeowners rush to grab £5,000 from the Government’s new Boiler Upgrade Scheme towards new green heating systems. The cash is for air, ground and water source heat pumps and is aimed at domestic systems with a capacity of less than 45 kilowatts. The Real Ale Trail goes on the move
If you’ve been on the hunt for an idea for a day out spent with friends then look no further, as the Real Ale Trail is something quite different that you need to experience. Would you choose a direct cremation like David Bowie? Back in January 2016, in a pre-Covid era, life was pretty different. David Bowie died at his home in New York, having suffered from liver cancer for 18 months. He was reportedly ‘secretly cremated’ without any of his friends or family present, as he did not wish to have a funeral service. This news sparked a surge in people looking at direct cremation.

option is appealing. Particularly in the current climate, where living costs are also rising and funeral poverty is a key consideration for a lot of people. According to the Sun Life Cost of Dying Report, since 2018 the number of direct cremations has increased from 3% to 18% across all organised funerals. Inevitably, this also means that a lot of disposal service companies have been set up in order to make money and take away any personal touches. We are hearing some awful stories from families and their experiences regarding these disposal companies, and so we urge you to do your research, as not everything is as it appears.

juxtaposition of scenery and history – it’s hard to think of a better stretch of land to showcase what makes North Wales so special. Starting on Llandudno Promenade and ending in Conwy, it’s very much a journey over land and through time; with visions of medieval, Elizabethan and Victorian Wales as palpable as the route’s unmistakably fresh sea breeze. Summarising the walk, Gruff Owen, Wales Coast Path officer for the North Wales coast, said: “The first half clings to the narrow cliff-edge road around the Great Orme’s limestone cliffs, providing fabulous coastal views for miles around. The second [half] is completely flat, beside a fabulous beach, up the Conwy estuary and finishing in the unique medieval town of Conwy.” So, what are you waiting for? MAGAZINE
IN THE
STARS...
While everyone remembers Russell Grant from his Breakfast TV appearances in the 1980’s, most people don’t realise that Russell was the first astrologer in over 300 years to present a horoscope forecast to a member of the Royal Family (HRH Queen Mother). Now dubbed the “Royal Astrologer” Russell has appeared on numerous television shows, including Strictly Come Dancing. He divides his time between London and his North Wales home near Portmeirion. www.russellgrant.com
May’s horoscopes brought to you by Russell Grant ARIES (March 21st – April 20th) Be patient. You’ll never be able to master all aspects of your life. The best way to deal with what isn’t possible is to change while trying to make the most of the areas in your life that are comfortable and comfortable with. Patience will yield good results. On the 12th of May, you might be thinking about various areas of your existence, including your relationships.
LIBRA (September 24th – October 23rd) An optimistic state of mind will allow you to maintain good health, and household projects will be successful. It is not advisable to look too deeply into conversations that occur early in the month, however, it could provide an indication of how the mood is around you as well as what’s coming up in the coming weeks.
TAURUS (April 21st – May 21st) You will feel as if you’re growing spiritually in many different ways. It’s time to accept the person who you know inside your heart that you are supposed to be. It’s time to accept yourself. This is the right time to make a plan for your relationships and life. If your life isn’t going in the direction you want, regardless of whether it’s your career, your love life and family activities, take action…
SCORPIO (October 24th – November 22nd) There will be a reason when the month gets underway to reflect on the many benefits of the friendships and relationships you’ve got throughout your day. This will motivate you to think of ways to let others know that you cherish and value them. Are you dating? Like flowers in the flowering stage, a relationship is at a point of possibility.
GEMINI (May 22nd – June 21st) In the midst of your ruler, Mercury being retrograde throughout the month, you will need to collect additional information prior to making a decision on what you want to accomplish. You’ve taken a detour off the path you’ve chosen but it could be needed to acquire experience in different areas. Now you are contemplating whether you’re in the right direction.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd – December 21st) Your keen sense of smell will help you identify opportunities that are heading in your direction. It’s amazing that a surprising travel opportunity has come up for you. Simply make use of your luck while you have the chance. There are lots of exciting things happening right this moment that will draw your attention.
CANCER (June 22nd – July 23rd) The changes that are taking place right today aren’t just random events. These are all part of an overall plan which will get you to where you’re supposed to be. Are you transferring your power to others, giving them the ability to manage any situation? Have you fallen into the habit of following with a friend or partner’s plans to make the lives of everyone involved easier?
CAPRICORN (December 22nd – January 20th) After having to face several annoyances earlier during the month on the 8th, you’ll begin adopting a calmer approach to life. This is the time when you discover that things aren’t quite so bad as you thought. Changes that occur around 14th will provide a sense of positive outlook for the coming days. It’s not a good idea to spend time with friends when a romantic relationship has just begun.
LEO (July 24th – August 23rd) Keep your eyes on the prize and don’t lose the possibility of success. Believe in yourself and you will be able to attract positive opportunities. Friends trust you to give them good guidance and you’ll be able to offer any person a listening ear if they need one, but when May is about to begin it’s important to include ‘you’ as well as your own needs to the priority list.
AQUARIUS (January 21st – February 19th) There’s a temptation to immerse your mind in fun activities, however, despite the relaxed mood your eyes are at the future. The flames of love could be fading when May starts, however a surprising change about the 7th day will shift the scales in the other direction. The romantic aspirations of yours are increased, and you are closer to achieving your most cherished wish.
VIRGO (August 24th – September 23rd) An increase in desire to take care of yourself and alternative therapies could motivate you to bring more colour to your lifestyle or enrol in a class in aromatherapy or meditation. Herbal remedies are sure to be an attraction for you right now. You’re not just conscious of the importance of maintaining close relationships, but you’re also keen to improve how you relate to yourself.
PISCES (February 20th – March 20th) A love for friendships and a romantic relationship will boost your confidence and strength. This is the perfect time to explore your heart’s desires. If you are in a calm state of mind, the month of May is the perfect time to let out your most intimate thoughts. Offer compliments whenever you feel you are due. Family and friends will be able to sense your sincerity.
