THE EDITOR SPEAKS
Dear Members,
In this first issue of Resort View in the new year, the spotlight shines appropriately on NSRCC staff and committee members who have made a mark in their own unique way.
At the 16th SAFRA Awards Presentation on Dec 1, there were 17 award recipients from NSRCC including Club Captain Winston Toh who received the Distinguished Service Award and Vice Captain Brian Tan who received the Commendation Award.
Then there was our very own Hairon Awang who created a buzz at the 16th Asian Senior Bowling Championship in Malaysia by winning three medals, two gold and one silver.
Over at NSRCC Kranji, Salleh and Farziana are colleagues turned wedded couple who decided to celebrate their nuptials at their “work place”. So history was made, to everyone’s delight!
And finally to all who are involved in the renovation of the Kranji course, keep up the great work as good progress has been made!
Here’s wishing you a great year ahead and one that you will fondly remember.
Happy New Year 2023, and have a very prosperous Lunar New Year!
Chua Swee Kiat EDITOR Regards,OUR BOWLER EXCELS AT 16TH ASIAN SENIOR BOWLING CHAMPIONSHIP
NSRCC’s own bowler, Hairon Awang, won three medals, including two Gold medals, at the 16th Asian Senior Bowling Championship 2022 that was held from Nov 9-15, 2022 in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.
clinch his first Gold medal during the Men’s Senior (50+) Singles event with a total score of 1381.
The 62-year-old then partnered with fellow Singaporean teammate, Paiman Dali to win a second Gold medal in the Men’s Senior (50+) Doubles event.
Additionally, Hairon brought home a Silver medal for the Men’s Senior (50+) All Events Standings.
Singapore even at my age. It was an amazing feeling standing on the podium and hearing the national anthem playing!”
Hairon started bowling during his work stint in the hotel industry, through inter-hotel bowling competitions in the 1980s. His latest achievements prove that he is among the best senior bowlers in Asia, but Hairon believes he has more to achieve.
For Hairon, age is certainly just a number. May
be an inspiration to us, especially our youth bowlers!

WHAT AWAITS YOU IN 2023, BASED ON YOUR CHINESE ZODIAC
SIGN?
By Master Jason LiewWith a strong belief in maximising human energy through the combination of Eastern sensitivity and Western sensibility, Feng Shui Master Jason Liew has been learning and practising since the age of 15.
RAT Generally, 2023 will be an awesome year for the Rat with the star shining brightly over this zodiac. You will be able to find a good new relationship. For those seeking to have a child, this will be the year that your dream comes true. However, your communication will be weak, causing slight misunderstandings between you and your friends and family.
RABBIT Focus on communicating with the people around you as you will encounter several disagreements that will lead to major arguments and cause disadvantages. Additionally, there will be major wealth loss from your career, investment and personal needs. But, good news: your relationships will be strong and stable in 2023.
OX 2023 will not be a good year for the Ox. Overall, there will be instances of loss in wealth, obstacles in career and sadness within family. The luck cycle for Ox will not be strong, ranging from 40% to 60%. Focus on your mental and emotional health as you will face stressful periods throughout the year. Furthermore, it is essential for you to have regular family gatherings.
DRAGON After several years of instability, 2023 will see the Dragon enjoying good blessings with several achievements. Your wealth will be strong, especially in the first half of the year. However, remain cautious and stay away from gambling, illegal activities and selling unauthorised products. For those looking to declare your love, do not be afraid to share your emotions because there is high chance your partner feels the same way too!
TIGER
The main focus for Tiger this year is health. Physically, take care of your ear, nose, bones, skin and large intestine. Mentally, monitor your stress level and go on holidays to manage it. Emotionally, your family will encounter certain bad news that will cause you to be disturbed, confused, upset and selfisolated. Thus, make time to create more human energy around you through active social connections.
SNAKE
Spending more time and bonding with your family is crucial, especially because 2023 will be a busy and tough year for the Snake. It might seem like you are putting in 150% into your work, but the result will only be 50%. Your health will be affected. It is recommended for the Snake to wear a green jade item to help balance their emotion and luck.
HORSE
There will be an excellent flow of qi for the Horse. For those who have been facing health problems, 2023 will be a turning point and your health will improve. However, you will face family problems so be careful of what you say and the way you say it. Stay away from any conflict, especially if the matter does not concern you directly.
ROOSTER
You will encounter a lot of planning in 2023. Any small improvements should be interpreted as big milestones. Strengthen your mental and emotional health. Beware of scams and do not make any impulsive decisions to avoid unnecessary wealth loss. Be cautious when making new friends.
GOAT
Welcome to a year of good fortune and growth! However, remember to remain humble and calm throughout the year, and do not be aggressive. 2023 will be a good year for you to carry out your plans and focus on getting the results you have been aiming for. There will be obstacles, but you will be able to overcome them and succeed.
DOG Expect 2023 to be an excellent year for you. There will be good news in your career, wealth and relationships. However, watch your health because sudden illnesses such as stroke and heart attack might happen and impact your overall progress. It will be good to check your blood pressure every day.
MONKEY
2023 will be a good year for Monkey in terms of wealth and career. However, you need to monitor your health, or else, it will be a major hindrance for you to have a great year. Therefore, it is very important for you to take care of your health, especially your mouth, neck, shoulder and bone, so that everything will fall nicely into place throughout the year.
PIG
There will be stability but not luck. You will face several major setbacks in terms of health and wealth. Be very careful when doing your daily routine activities as you are prone to encounter accidents this year. Try to stay low profile as much as possible to avoid unnecessary mishaps.

ANNUAL BOWLING CHAMPIONSHIP 2022
By Dennis Chew, Executive (Resort Bowl)The Club’s final bowling event for 2022 was the Annual Bowling Championship, which was held on Nov 20, 2022 with 29 participants –nine in Men’s Open Category, six in Women’s Open Category and 14 in Mixed Graded Category. The bowlers played well, with 17 of them scoring over 200 pinfalls in at least one game.
Following the overwhelming support for the Durian Fiesta in July, another round of Durian Fiesta 2.0 was held at the Courtyard in NSRCC Changi on Nov 26, 2022.
Throughout the 1.5 hour evening buffet, participants were treated to an unlimited supply of Musang King from Pahang. A myriad of fruits and refreshing coconut water were also served alongside the durians.
The event was complemented with entertainment, where some participants took the floor to perform their fanciest dance moves. Other participants battled their wits to guess the weight of a huge durian and won exciting prizes.
It was definitely a night to be remembered, with participants leaving satisfied after indulging in their cravings for the king of fruits.

HALLOWEEN FAMILY FUN HAUNTS NSRCC CHANGI!
The spirit of Halloween invaded our Changi Clubhouse on Oct 29, 2022, where families gathered at the Kingfisher Room in NSRCC Resort Bowl for a series of fun activities. The afternoon began with a hands-on DIY craft session, where participants constructed their very own dinosaur costumes. More fun ensued with an 8-pin tap bowling game and arcade games at the Family Zone. The day ended with a Halloween-themed feast for everyone.

Many participants donned amazing Halloween costumes and took the chance to take photos with our very own Zombie Trio - Bobblehead Pumpkin, Screaming Ghost and Frankenstein. While the night was still young, our Zombie Trio took the chance to bring the Halloween mood and spread the scares to unsuspecting Bungalow guests.

BENEFITS OF Taijiquan
By Hazel Ng, NSRCC Taijiquan CoachCoach Hazel Ng has been practicing Taijiquan since 2008 and is trained in the styles of Chen and Yang, which utilises fists and weapons such as the sword and sabre. She represented Singapore in 2019 for the 8th World Kungfu Championship and won Gold and Silver medals in two events.
Taijiquan classes are held every Saturday morning at NSRCC Changi, Courtyard
Taijiquan is a prominent Chinese martial arts, which when practised regularly, can transform and energise your entire body and mind. It has also been proven to promote health and wellness.
The diverse and profound ideology of Taijiquan is incorporated into its movement set. Passed down through many generations, Taijiquan has evolved into many different styles. There are five main schools of Taijiquan, which are commonly practiced worldwide, are: The Chen Style, The Yang Style, The Sun Style, The Wu2 Style and The Wu3 Style.
Taijiquan transcends age and ethnicity. The elderly can learn Taijiquan for health and fitness as it helps in strengthening bones and muscles, improving blood circulation and regulating breathing, thereby improving health and longevity. Youths who are trained in Taijiquan will enhance their physical fitness and athleticism, while inculcating the virtues of patience and endurance.

STAFF MET & WED AT NSRCC
Two NSRCC staff created history on Dec 11, 2022 when they tied the knot at the function room in their workplace, NSRCC Kranji. Mohamed Salleh Jumi (Course Marshal) and Farziana Osman Mansoor (Senior Customer Service Officer) are the first couple who are both NSRCC staff to hold their wedding on NSRCC premises.
Salleh joined the Club as a Course Marshal in 2011, while Farziana became part of the NSRCC family in 2016. It was not love at first sight for them as they remained friends before taking their relationship to the next level in early 2022.
The Sanctuary at NSRCC Kranji was chosen as their wedding venue, as a way of commemorating the place where they met and fell in love.
Function Room rental starts from $1296 for 8 hours. Call 67951 128 for more details.

MATTERS GREENSIDE
JAN/FEB 2023
Dear Members,
Going into January with the prospects of a new year typically brings with it a sense of reflection, new beginnings and well wishes, and in my case, the occasional recurring resolution. The 22nd day of this pivotal month also marks the beginning of a new year on the lunar calendar when friends who observe it usher in the Year of the Rabbit. People born to this zodiac sign are believed to be vigilant, witty, and ingenious. The sign of the Rabbit is widely regarded as a symbol of longevity, peace and prosperity. 2023 is predicted to be a year of hope. These are some of the things I am hoping for in the coming year:
One of the mostly highly-anticipated items on our 2023 calendar must be the opening of our newly renovated first-nine at Kranji. I am delighted to inform members that renovation works are on schedule despite the erratic weather in the past months. The turf grass on all nine fairways, greens and even the practice green are fully planted, and undergoing the grow-in period under the watchful eye of our course maintenance team. A new retaining wall now surrounds the Hole #6 green and promises to provide all who play it a spectacular visual feast, and yes, a test of your golfing prowess. Apart from the additional tee-boxes which I wrote about in my last instalment, extensive work is being done to the bunkers and slopes surrounding the Hole #5 green. This signature Par-3 hole has been the site of numerous holes-in-one for members, and I know many will relish the challenge of taking it on again in its new form. I wish to extend a big thank you to our NSRCC course maintenance team for their unrelenting effort and dedication in ensuring the renovation stays on point.
The 2023 golfing calendar promises to be packed with a number of gob-smacking events. We should see SGA’s Inter-Club League resume its full schedule from its abbreviated format last year. Both our NSRCC Men’s and Women’s teams are working hard to build on the momentum and gains they achieved on last year’s league table. Likewise, work has begun amongst our juniors as they prepare to contest for top honours after achieving 1st runner-up in all three categories last year - Team, Girls and Boys. We will kick off our own Club tournament schedule with the President’s Trophy come Mar 11, followed by our NSRCC Charity Golf on May 20-21 and SAF & NS Day tournament on Jul 8. We hope to wrap the year with a grand finale at Captain’s Cup on Sep 16 at our fully renovated 18-hole Kranji course. Members with children can also expect to see the Club stay the course with more familyfriendly activities. True to our Audubon Certification, the Club will continue its focus on sustainability.
Finally, I wish to thank all golfing members for their contribution in making our post-COVID transition seamless. Your sense of personal accountability, responsibility and graciousness to others around you made a material difference in what was an unpredictable 2022. I also wish to thank the Club’s management and staff for their effort and commitment in delivering a safe, fun and memorable experience for members and our families each and every time we visit. As we swop our Christmas greens for CNY reds in the coming weeks, here’s wishing all members and your families Gong Xi Fa Cai and a very prosperous Lunar New Year.

PROGRESS OF KRANJI GOLF COURSE RENOVATION
Watering the newly planted grass
The golf course renovation for the first 9-hole at NSRCC Kranji is now going into its final phase. The planting at all tees and fairway were completed in early December 2022, keeping closely to the project timeline.
All newly planted sprigs are currently undergoing their grow-in and are expected to reach full maturity over the first two to three months of 2023.
Additionally, trees to shield against wayward shots, will be planted during this period. Our course maintenance team also took the opportunity to carry out improvement works and installed new sumps in the side roads.
As the renovation is showing good progress, members can look forward to a refreshing golfing experience at the newly renovated first nine in March 2023.
3 TIPS TO SHOOT LOWER SCORES
By Louis Farrelly, Coach, International Golf InstituteHow often do you find yourself reflecting after a round of golf on how much lower your score could have been? Every time you tee it up, you want to play to the best of your ability but in reality, you rarely play to your full potential.
With the right approach, better strategy, decision-making, positive mentality and an increased understanding of your game, you can play better and more consistent golf. Below are three tips to shoot lower scores on the golf course:
1Correct Yardage
- Consider your environment. There are several factors that could affect the club that you decide to use to play your shot. For example, the yardage will increase when you are playing uphill or into the wind. If you are using a 7 iron, you will need to go up to a 6 iron or even a 5 iron depending on the severity of the conditions. The opposite applies for downhill and downwind shots (7 iron to an 8 or 9 iron). Another factor you may want to consider is where the flag is positioned on the green. For example, if there is water in front of the green and the flag is positioned close, allow for extra yardage.
2Take Your Medicine - Resist
the temptation to take on the hero shot. If you find yourself in the trees after an errant tee shot, the most important thing to do is to get the ball back in play. Even if you have to accept you will be further away from the hole, try and ensure your next shot is from the fairway. The same applies if you find yourself out of position after your approach shot, you don’t always have to aim for the flag but instead the widest part of the green.
3Simplify Your Short Game
- Use less loft to suit the shot. More often than not, golfers use a club with too much loft when chipping, even when there is plenty of green to work with. Next time you are on the edge of the green, try using a club with less loft such as a pitching wedge, 9 iron, or even an 8 iron. Aim to land the ball a yard or two onto the green. When taking less loft, even if you mishit your shot, the ball will still roll towards your target, as there will be less spin. If the flag is close to you and you have less green to work with, this is the time you should opt to play your sand or lob wedge.
Golf is a great, but a challenging game. Next time you are on the course, give these tips a go and hopefully they will help to take a few shots off your score. Good luck!

MANAGING
by Dr Huang Ching, T32 Dental SurgeoBAD BREATH
Bad breath, also known as halitosis, affects 25% of people globally. Halitosis can cause poor self-esteem and embarrassment.
However, it is relatively easy to remedy. Do seek treatment as early as possible.
What Causes Bad Breath?
The most common cause of halitosis is poor oral hygiene. Without proper oral hygiene (brushing, flossing, tongue scraping and routine dental cleanings), food particles remain in the mouth. This creates a breeding ground for bacteria to form around the teeth, gums and tongue, which results in problems such as cavities and gum diseases, further exacerbating the bad breath. Other causes include:
• Tobacco products
• Improper denture hygiene resulting in trapped food or plaque around dentures
• Certain food such as onions and garlic, caffeine and alcohol
• Other mouth, nose and throat conditions such as tonsil stones or chronic sinus problems
• Dry mouth due to lack of saliva flow, medications, salivary gland disorders or mouth breathing
• Other underlying health conditions such as gastrointestinal disorders, diabetes, kidney or liver disorder
How to Treat Bad Breath?
Treating bad breath varies, depending on the cause. If your bad breath is due to poor oral hygiene, scaling and polishing is likely to reduce odour-causing bacteria by removing plaque and tartar deposits that build up on your teeth over time. It is best to see a dental practitioner who will assess the condition of your teeth and gums, and advise you on the oral hygiene methods or treatment specific to your condition.
How to Prevent Bad Breath?

If your bad breath is due to poor oral hygiene, scaling and polishing is likely to reduce odour-causing bacteria by removing plaque and tartar deposits that build up on your teeth over time. It is best to see a dental practitioner who will assess the condition of your teeth and gums, and advise you on the oral hygiene methods or treatment specific to your condition.
• Consistent practice of good oral hygiene is key! This includes proper tooth brushing twice a day, daily flossing, and using tongue scrapper.
• Schedule routine dental check-up and cleaning at least twice a year.
• Keep your mouth hydrated and drink plenty of water.
• If you wear dentures, take them out at night and cleanse them completely before putting it on the next day.
• Avoid alcohol and caffeine products as they can dry out your mouth.
A visit to the dentist can help manage your bad breath
• If you smoke, this might be a good excuse to quit smoking for a fresher breath and healthier body.
If you practice good hygiene and still have halitosis, schedule an appointment with your dentist. Some people build up plaque faster than others and may need more frequent cleanings. You can also schedule an appointment with a periodontist (gum disease specialist) who can check whether gum disease is the cause of halitosis. If your dentist does not find any oral health issues, he or she might refer you to a primary care physician who can determine if there are any other underlying health conditions that might be causing the halitosis.
