THE EDITOR SPEAKS Dear Members, The long awaited resumption of key Club activities is now a reality and this includes several of our flagship golf events. First to kick off was President’s Trophy which took place on Mar 26 with LG Melvyn Ong leading the field. It was a nice day out for our participating golfers albeit with some modifications to the programme to suit the new normal. Coming up very soon on May 21-22 will be NSRCC Charity Golf 2022. It’s another much loved event for our golfers that has been missing from the Club’s calendar for a while. That our Changi course, the venue for these events, has been recertified as a Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary is also welcome news. This international award is given to golf courses that meet a series of specific environmental management standards. With golfers preparing for a fuller golf calendar, some may be hoping to play better by improving various aspects of their game. We have several features in this issue that should be of help: from upgraded as well as new warm-up bays at NSRCC Kranji to tips on pre-shot routine from a golf professional. There is more. Vice Captain Brian Tan shares his strategies to tackle the NSRCC Kranji starting holes, which are known to be challenging. In bowling, our youth bowlers Ashley Victoria Lok and Lim Wan Ling scored several victories at the National Age Group Championship. They relive the high and low points of the tournament and tell us about the motivations that drive them. For winners of the Club’s overall Top Service Excellence Awards 2021/2022, what motivates them is surely the passion to serve and to serve well. Congratulations to Ivan Tee, Poh Eng Choon, Andy Lee and Low Hai Meng. Hope to see you at the Club soon!

RESUMING NSRCC’S MAJOR GOLF EVENTS WITH

The major golf events at our Club are officially back! On Mar 26, President’s Trophy was held at NSRCC Changi, kickstarting the resumption of our highly anticipated golf events after two years. The tournament was graced by NSRCC Club President & Chief of Defence Force, LG Melvyn Ong. The event was held in accordance with prevailing Safe Management Measures. Since large groups for F&B was not allowed, participants received vouchers to fill their tummies before or after their game at Passion Cafe or Sky Bistro. In lieu of a live prize presentation after the tournament, the results and details were posted on the Club’s website, and winners were contacted via phone to collect their prizes personally from the Golf Reception counter. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the winners of President’s Trophy 2022! President’s Trophy was played in timesheet format, with participation exclusively for NSRCC members. As the nation adapts to a new norm, our members can look forward to participating in more golf events this year. Look out for the details on our website!

Looking ahead intently to plan the best shot

CLUB HAPPENINGS 7

“During the tournament, I was definitely nervous. But as the competition progressed, I realise that enjoying the game was more important than comparing scores. There were games that were not good and I felt disappointed, but I found a way to get back on track. To be honest, I did not realise I had won because I was focused on my shot-making and not so much about the scores. However, when I saw the results, I was shocked because I thought the others were catching up on me. I was beyond excited and honestly was in disbelief when I first saw the results. I was not keeping track of the number of strikes I was getting, but rather, making sure that I was making every shot count. Eventually, I think just got the right flow and the strikes just keep coming. Of course, by the last frame, I was feeling the jitters not only because of the scores but because of the crowd that was forming behind me. I am extremely grateful to my coaches who were standing by my side throughout the event and calming me down when I got too nervous. I managed to stay focused and I honestly still cannot believe I have achieved that milestone.

“The entire course of the tournament was mentally and physically tiring as I was bowling almost every day of the week. However, the experience was also exciting as I learnt new lessons along the way. During the Masters, I felt exhilarated as I was hoping for a podium finish, but I also felt nervous as I knew I was up against strong competitors. I was extremely elated when my friend came up to me to break the news that I had finished third. This was because I felt that my second block of four games pulled down my overall score and I was sure that I was out of the running for the podium. Due to the fact that I had not bowled up to expectations in the previous Masters just a few hours before that, my first thought was that I was glad that I learnt from my mistakes. My latest achievements have taught me to expect the unexpected. Coming in third for the Under 21 Masters came as a surprise to me; thus this award means a lot to me. This serves as a motivation for me to not give up and to fight throughout the course of the competition

Winning the National Age Group Championship has given me the extra boost of confidence to keep persevering and not giving up even when I face setbacks. It also taught me to not take things for granted and to always do my best.” HER STORY “What got me interested in bowling was, when I was a kid, I would visit bowling centres. I was always mesmerised by how people could control the ball with such ease and it also amazed me when they get a strike, so I wanted to experience that for myself. I only started training with NSRCC in August 2021, but I have already learnt so much from training just once a week. Bowling training at NSRCC is not only fun, but I also learn skills on top of what I know from school training. That has given me the extra knowledge about my sport and helps me to keep improving.”

as anything can happen. Starting the competition well does not equate to finishing it off well, and starting the competition badly does not mean you will finish it off badly either.” HER STORY “When I was younger, I always loved to imitate what my brothers did. Hence, when I saw my older brother take up bowling lessons, I was immediately intrigued and wanted to follow in his footsteps too. I have been trained by NSRCC bowling coaches since I was 11 years old. The coaches always guided me and helped me improve my physical game by giving me tips on how to improve my release or adjust my launch angle. During Club events, various oiling patterns are set, thus exposing me to the different patterns and allowing me to learn how to tackle each pattern.”

JUNIOR

By Juhainie,

GOLF CAMP

Assistant Executive (Sports & Recreation)

In conjunction with the March school holidays, the Club collaborated with coaches from The Golfing Lab to organise a Junior Golf Camp for young, aspiring golfers. On Mar 18, the day started warm and bright with no hint of rain despite experiencing several rainy days before that. It was as if the weather was cooperating and did not want to dampen the kids’ spirit as this will be the first-ever golf camp for most of them. A total of seven kids arrived, all of them looking bright and shy. After a round of introduction and getting to know one another, they started asking numerous questions and were excited to start learning. The camp started with an hour of theory session held at the Falcon Room. The participants were clearly having fun, and the session definitely felt more like playing than learning! Then, they spent the next hour at the Putting & Chipping Greens, where they put to full use all that they learnt earlier during the theory session.

Look Out! Position! Strike!

Paying attention to the coach’s demonstration

Practice definitely makes perfect!

For the last hour, the coaches brought them to the Sky Range, where the kids’ eagerness kept them on their toes. As soon as they were given the go-ahead to start, each kid approached a bay and began hitting the balls while applying the fresh knowledge that they gained. Hopefully, this camp ignited their spirit to deepen their flair in golfing! If you are keen to register your children for upcoming golf camps, email to S&R@nsrcc.com.sg.

BENEFITS OF SWIMMING By Tang Yong Chong,

NSRCC Head Coach (Swimming)

Yong Chong is a Senior Coach (National Registry of Coaches) - Swimming and Vice President of the Singapore Lifesaving Society (SLSS).

Swimming is a sport that is suitable for all ages, from the young to the old. As swimming can be used in multiple ways, from leisure to competitive to rehabilitation, it is good to start the sport from a young age. Swimming not only serves as a sport, but it also has several other benefits.

SWIMMING AS A SPORT - Swimming keeps the heart rate steady, uses every limb of the body and is a low-impact sport. It can also be a planned exercise to work on various systems, such as Anaerobic Alactic, Anaerobic Lactic or Aerobics. Regardless of whether you are learning to swim for leisure, competitive or life-saving, the principle of activity in the water does not change much. SWIMMING FOR WELLNESS - Swimming helps in promoting overall wellness development and health maintenance. Swimming is one of the few sports that allows one to engage both the left and right side of our body muscles. This also enhances crucial muscular development, benefitting young swimmers in terms of their brain and muscle growth development. As for elderly swimmers, it keeps their muscles and neuromuscular connectivity active. SWIMMING AS A FORM OF REHABILITATION AND RECOVERY Try floating in the water and you will realise that your body buoyancy is equivalent to the gravitational force acting on your body. As this body buoyancy results in low impact, it helps with rehabilitation for injuries with proper use of technique, equipment and water depth. You may start with a partial weight bearing to eventually using a full weight bearing. Understanding water resistance and buoyancy helps with body injuries and resistance training using pool accessories. This also promotes local movements without pressure. Using the right technique will help to relieve some pressure off your lumbar column and helps to relax tensed muscles. Lastly, staying under water features in any play pool and letting the water hit your shoulder helps in a form of massage as it promotes muscles circulation.

If you are keen to register yourself or your children for swimming classes at NSRCC, email to S&R@nsrcc.com.sg.

ARE YOU READY TO

UNMASK YOUR

Reviewed by Dr Leo Song Jie,

a T32 dental surgeon with an advanced degree in prosthodontics

With the recent relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions, most people are able to golf and exercise without their mask, and our lives will soon return to normal. We can now show off our pearly whites without restrictions. We can form deeper connection and communicate more effectively through our smiles. But, are you smile-ready? In this article, we explore ways to beautify your smile by keeping your teeth shiny white.

Dr Leo Song Jie providing dental care

1. Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day and Floss Daily Practising good oral hygiene will keep your teeth clean, and clean teeth is the first step to a better smile. By brushing your teeth at least twice a day, you can remove surface stains and plaque for cleaner teeth. There will be areas where a toothbrush cannot reach, and that is where flossing comes in handy. Flossing or the use of specialised interdental brushes can remove plague between teeth and under the gum lines. By flossing daily, you can prevent tooth decay and gingivitis. Otherwise, tartar and plaque can build up and harden under the surface of the gumline, increasing the risk of periodontal disease. 2. Drink Less Coffee, Tea and Red Wine Drinks such as coffee, tea and red wine can stain your teeth as they contain an organic substance called tannins. With every drink, tannins will build up on the tooth enamel and result in the yellowing of your teeth. Aim to drink less of these beverages to avoid tooth discoloration.

Dental hygiene is important

Coffee stains your teeth

3. Straighten Your Teeth Not everyone is born with perfectly straight teeth. If you feel that your misaligned teeth are affecting your smile, don’t worry, there are many ways to fix it. Teeth can be straightened using braces. A traditional solution involves metal braces in which metal brackets are stuck onto the front of your teeth. Another method of straightening teeth is to use clear aligners that are transparent and removable. Customised aligners will gradually move your teeth until the desired result is achieved. 4. Replace any Missing Tooth & Restore Your Teeth Shape and Sizes You may smile less if you have missing teeth. There are many solutions to replace them, so that you can regain the confidence to smile. These include dentures, dental bridges and dental implants. Some of the teeth shape and size can also be altered using treatments such as dental bonding, dental crowns and dental veneers.

Fellow Members,

MATTERS

P

reviously in this column, I highlighted that members would have an active calendar of events to look forward to as the Club reinstates tournaments and competitive golf. I am delighted to share that we kicked things off with a successful President’s Trophy on Mar 26. The event was graced by NSRCC Club President LG Melvyn Ong and saw robust participation from members. Next up on the calendar is our annual Charity Golf tournament played over the weekend of May 21 and 22. While we cheer the return of this much anticipated event, let’s be reminded that the pandemic has exacerbated the strain on the vulnerable segments of our society. Children from low-income families and adults with disabilities rank amongst the most impacted. Since its inception in 1995, our Charity Golf has raised and donated funds to numerous charitable organisations. This year is no different - our NSmen will have a fun yet meaningful way to contribute to our three nominated beneficiaries. The Children’s Wishing Well provides a wide range of services for children and youth from lowincome families in Singapore. Their services support educational and daily living needs. With the funds received, the organisation will expand their existing FRESH programme (Fresh Groceries for Every Student’s Home) to all of their seven sites benefitting 400 children and also enhance their current Children’s Enrichment Programme. Club Rainbow was formed in 1991, when the Rotaract Clubs of Singapore came together to organise a special camp for children with various chronic and life-threatening illnesses. The organisation will utilise the funds for the Education Bursary for children from low-income homes, who have done reasonably well in school and an array of Therapy Services which are put in place to address the diverse developmental needs of the children under their care. Last but not least, the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Care Fund is set up to provide additional support to SAF servicemen who are severely disabled due to military service, over and above MINDEF’s compensation and welfare frameworks. The invasion of Ukraine has once again underscored the importance of an operationally ready SAF as a deterrent to any would-be aggressor. But we also want to assure servicemen who sustain debilitating injuries that their service to our nation will not be forgotten. The fund enables members of the public to make contributions and show their support to injured servicemen. In closing, I wish to thank our sponsors and members who bought Charity Golf flights for the two days. For those who have not found a way to contribute, the Club is also selling raffle tickets with many attractive prizes such as luxury watches, air tickets and dining vouchers. All monetary contributions receive tax exemption. Churchill once said - “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give”. We look forward to your kindness, generosity and participation in making our returning NSRCC Charity Golf 2022 both a fun and meaningful success.

Thank You!

NSRCC CHANGI IS RECERTIFIED AS AN AUDUBON COOPERATIVE SANCTUARY By Nur Isyana,

Assistant Executive (Corporate Communications)

We are pleased to share that NSRCC Changi has recently been awarded with the prestigious international certification as a Recertified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary! Our Changi course was the first golf course in Singapore to receive the certification in 2000, and recertification in 2011, 2015 and 2018. The recertification is awarded by Audubon International in the USA to commend golf courses that protect the environment while preserving the natural heritage of the game of golf. These golf courses, including NSRCC Changi, have successfully met environmental management standards in six areas: environmental planning, wildlife and habitat management, chemical use reduction and safety, water conservation, water quality management, and outreach and education.

Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, the recent inspection was conducted through a video conference call, unlike having an Audubon inspector doing physical checks as per past years. Thus, many of the criteria needed to be explained in full details to ensure that the inspector could understand the progress of our course maintenance operations.

Some of the aspects inspected before the recent recertification are the vegetative buffer around water bodies, the natural non-mowing areas around the golf course, and the amount of wildlife that can be spotted at our course. The inspector also verified that our water

Overall, the Audubon inspector lauded the Club’s efforts and encouraged the team to carry on with the great work by maintaining good process and procedure during chemical spraying and fertilising period, carrying out frequent water testing throughout the year, and continuing to educate staff, members and the community on sustainability efforts. Children's Wishing Well

Children’s Wishing Well is a registered charity founded in 2002, and the only charity organisation in Singapore focused on the holistic education of children and youth from disadvantaged background. Their children beneficiaries come from low-income families, and their parents may be ill, incarcerated, or absent from their lives. From the Team at Children’s Wishing Well We provide a broad range of services to the children free of charge. Our programmes support their current educational

and daily living needs, as well as equip them with skills for their

future, so as to empower them to cope with the poverty trap. Our signature programme is the holistic Children Enrichment

Program (CEP), which includes academic support through weekly

tuition by MOE-registered professional tutors, with additional 1-to-1 tutoring with volunteers for the weaker students. P2 students attending academic lessons as part of CEP

We also provide shopping for fresh groceries and hot lunch daily, so that the children have access to sufficient and nutritious food. Regular lessons for Non-Academic Electives in music, sports, speech & drama, art, IT, etc. are conducted by professionals and volunteers as well. In recognising that not all children are academically-inclined,

our Reach For The Stars program identifies those who are talented

in these areas to sponsor them for professional training, and hence

support their ambitions to pursue careers in these areas. Students enjoying their non-academic elective, sports

We also organise Life Skills workshops and conduct training on interview skills, personal grooming, cooking,

public speaking and decision making etc. These life skills are essential to the holistic development for children and can help them succeed later in life. Scan the QR Code below to find out more about Children’s Wishing Well!

Learning Journeys are organised to educate and expose

the children to experiences and knowledge outside the classroom. Career GPS allows youths to visit companies in a variety of industries so that they are exposed to different career options and are motivated to work towards their goals.

HOW TO PLAY

THE STARTING AT NSRCC KRANJI

By Brian Tan, NSRCC Vice Captain

In continuation of our coverage of how to play different holes, in this article, we look at the starting holes at NSRCC Kranji. These two holes might be some of the toughest starting holes (for me, at least).

HOLE #1 This is a seemingly straightforward short hole at 305m from the blues and even shorter at 273m off the whites, but do not let the length fool you. At a starting hole, one’s swing usually is not fully warmed up and with internal OB along the entire left and a steep slope to water along the entire right, many a tee shot have got into trouble. As a referee covering events at NSRCC Kranji, I’ve seen elite players get into trouble off the tee even with conservative club choices like long irons or hybrids. I am not a long hitter so my default starting club would be a 5-wood, which hopefully travels 180m down the fairway, hopefully leaving a 120m 9-iron into the green. If your tee shot manages to stay within the hole, there is a pot bunker on the left of the fairway positioned to catch good tee shots. The pot bunker is deep enough to force a lay-up or a sideways exit shot depending on your lie and distance from the bunker walls. Guarding the front left of the green is another pot bunker, which is a distinct characteristic of our Gary Playerdesigned course. Behind the green is a slope with shrubbery protecting the tee boxes of Hole #2 followed by an internal OB, although this really should not be in play except with topped shots. Shots too far to the left might hit the buggy track and go OB, and shots too far to the right will go into the water. The green is fortunately relatively flat, so if one is on, two putts should be sufficient. Theoretically, achieving par on this hole should be easy.

TEE TALK 19

HOLES HOLE #10 This is an Index 2 hole and for a good reason. At 528m from the blues and 488m from the whites, it is a proper length Par 5. If you are starting off on the 10th tee and your swing is not warmed up yet, this hole could be a real challenge as a good long drive is required to be in position for a river crossing second shot if one wants to be on in regulation. Previously, there was OB on the left of the hole but with the construction of the tall netting, it really is quite hard to hit a ball out of bounds without the netting steering your tee shot back into play. If you can reach the fairway bunker on the right, that means you had a good length tee shot. Usually, I’ll take a driver off the tee and try to hit it as far as possible. Quite often even with a good drive, one will be left with a second shot requiring a carry of at least 150m to get onto flat land on the opposite side of the river. The river does run diagonal to the fairway, so it is shorter to cross on the left side of the fairway, but it does bring into play the red penalty area on the left which starts just after the river and follows the entire remaining length of the hole. If I had a good drive (seldom), I will try to cross with a hybrid (not always successful). If I had a bad drive (more often) or ended up in the bunker (seldom) or blocked by trees flanking the right side of the fairway (quite often), a lay up to the edge of the fairway before the slope downwards to the river is the only option. Sometimes, even after laying up, the sheer intimidation of how wide the river is can cause a duff into the water or topped shots that plug into the opposite sloped bank. After getting across the river, there is a fairway bunker on the right side of the fairway within 100m of the green. This should not be in play except for long hitters who had good second shots across the river. Most players would have about 160m in if their second shots were successful across the river. If there were layups and then third shots across the river, there may be approach shots from as close as 100m. A pothole bunker guards the left front of the green and there is a steep run off slope just right of the green, so inaccurate shots to the green will be punished. The green slopes down from back to front, so it does make a bit of sense to not be going after the pin too aggressively to leave oneself with an uphill putt. For most golfers, a bogey on this hole is a good score (Index 2, remember?) and a par is a good bonus.

HAPPY GOLFING!

PRE-SHOT ROUTINE

By Louis Farrelly,

Coach, International Golf Institute

A pre-shot routine is a technique that all world-class golfers use to prepare themselves mentally and physically for every single shot they hit. Whether it’s the first shot of the round or the last putt of the day, the pre-shot routine for many club golfers is often overlooked or even non-existent. In my opinion, the key to a solid routine is consistency. Many golfers start with the right intentions. However, a few holes into the round or when things are not going their way, they often stop their pre-shot routine. One of the main advantages of a consistent pre-shot routine is that it encourages you to get into a positive mindset. This is especially important when the pressure creeps in or when you are facing a demanding shot. Your pre-shot routine does not have to take a long time, as we all probably agree, no one likes slow play on the course. You should be aiming to build a routine that takes 30-40 seconds before each shot.

Here is an example of a checklist for golfers, as part of their pre-shot routines:

1. OPTIONS

– As you approach your ball, you need to consider factors such as how is the ball lying? What is the wind direction? How far do you have to the pin? And where is the trouble? The answers to these questions help you with your club selection.

3. EXECUTION

– At this stage, you should be over the ball and ready to make your swing. Take one last look at your target, take a deep breath, and then make a committed swing. It is important not to freeze over the ball or allow your body to become too static.

2. PREPARATION

– Now that you have chosen your club, the next stage is to prepare yourself for the shot you are about to play. Firstly, take one or two practice swings behind the ball, whilst imagining the shot you would like to hit. Then, walk into your set up position aiming the clubface at your intended target first, then align your feet to match.

4. EVALUATION

– Once you have made your swing, you have a time frame to evaluate the outcome of your shot. When you arrive at your ball, the previous shot should be cleared out of your mind, so that you are ready to focus on the next swing and repeat your routine again.

Building your own pre-shot routine takes time, consistency, and practice. It is something you should rehearse regularly at the driving range and short-game area, before taking it on to the golf course. Once you have rehearsed this over a long enough period of time, it will become an established part of your routine and you will start to see improvements out on the golf course.
