THE EDITOR SPEAKS Dear Members In NSRCC, the month of May has always been associated with a signature golf event. It went on for many years, until two years ago that is. After a two-year rain check, our favourite golf event is finally back! NSRCC Charity Golf 2022 announced its return on May 21-22 by raising an emphatic and significant amount of $350,000 for its beneficiaries. The unstinting support of our very generous sponsors and participating golfers made this possible and they are gratefully acknowledged in this issue of Resort View. The event at NSRCC Changi was attended by Guest of Honour, Mr Zaqy Mohamad, Senior Minister of State for Defence and Manpower. Together with Club President, LG Melvyn Ong, they led a field of happy golfers out to enjoy the fairways and contribute to a special cause. There is another reason to remember May this year. And it has to do with the refreshed look of our frontline staff. Yes, you must have noticed the smart new uniforms that were introduced for staff including Course Marshals, Customer Service Officers and Security Officers.

Hope to see you at the Club soon!

NSRCC CHARIT

MAKES A GREAT COMEBAC

After a two-year hiatus, NSRCC hosted its highly anticipated Charity Golf on May 21-22 at NSRCC Changi. The event was graced by Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Defence & Ministry of Manpower, Mr Zaqy Mohamad. With kind contributions from long-time sponsorsturned-friends and a new spectrum of companies, the Club raised a total of $350,000 in support of our beneficiaries. This year, the Club adopted three charities: • Children’s Wishing Well, which cares for children from lower-income families by empowering them to be in charge of their own lives • Club Rainbow (Singapore), which supports children suffering major chronic and potentially life-threatening illnesses • SAF Care Fund, which provides additional assistance to NSmen who have been severely disabled during their line of work and require long-term care

All eyes on the GOH, SMS Mr Zaqy Mohamad as he gives his best putt!

Over the two days, more than 600 golfers teed off for the meaningful cause. There was a heavy downpour in the late afternoon on Saturday, but the weather was pleasant for a great golf game on Sunday. During their game, all golfers were treated to cold fruits and pastry snacks with beer as a thirst quencher for fun under the sun! SMS Mr Zaqy Mohamad (fourth from left) graces NSRCC Charity Golf 2022 as the GOH

During the dinner at Fu Lin Men Chinese Restaurant, sponsors and golfers were treated to delightful live performances. On Sunday, diners received an additional treat when our Club President, LG Melvyn Ong took to the stage and performed two songs! Live auctions were also conducted during dinner on both days, where lucky bidders won various exquisite items for themselves, including paintings contributed by our beneficiaries, bottles of whiskey, and wine cellars containing 120 bottles of wines. We look forward to the continued support of our members and sponsors for upcoming Club events! Check out more photos of NSRCC Charity Golf 2022 on our Facebook page by scanning the QR code.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF… THE FACILITIES ASSISTANTS AT NSRCC CHANGI By Nur Isyana, Assistant Executive (Corporate Communications)

Say hello to Andy Lee (left) and Alex Ong (right) the next time you see them at the Club!

In this series of articles, we bring our readers closer to NSRCC staff by getting to know a little more about them. In this article, we introduce our team of Facilities Assistants, comprising Andy Lee and Alex Ong.

T

he billiard players at NSRCC are certainly familiar with this duo. As Facilities Assistants, the “office” for Andy and Alex is the Billiards Room. “Our daily tasks include cleaning and sanitising of all the billiards tables and equipment. We maintain them and ensure that they are in good working condition for the players,” shared Andy. Alex added, “We liaise with the customer service officers at Main Lobby to receive bookings for the billiards tables. Then, we will monitor each booking to ensure that they follow the timeframe and do not affect other subsequent bookings.” This job has an added perk for Alex, who is a billiards player himself. “I know the game well, so I enjoy watching the players. They are the professionals. I am just a casual player,” he said with a chuckle. Before joining NSRCC in 2018, Alex was in the sales

industry, which he felt was “more stressful”. For Andy, who has been with the Club since 2015, this job is all about friendships. “Through this job, I have the opportunity to meet new friends, especially the new billiards players. All of my colleagues and the vendors that we deal with are friendly to me and also to one another.” Their duties go beyond the Billiards Room. “We also provide ad-hoc support to the Event Management team and the Sports & Recreation team in terms of setting up function rooms for all corporate, private and social events and other logistics preparation.” When asked what they like most about their jobs, Andy and Alex shared a common answer: worklife balance. Andy explained, “With my age, and as a family man, this is a stable job with reasonable income.” Alex echoed and said, “I want to spend more time with my family, so this job suits my needs.”

Known as “The Art of Peace”, Aikido is a non-violent and non-aggressive Japanese art for overcoming adversaries through the use of smooth, fluid and circular movements to defend yourself from an opponent of superior size and strength. Aikido emphasises harmonising with an opponent’s force rather than meeting it head on, defending yourself without injuring the attacker. BENEFITS OF AIKIDO •

Learn soft and circular movements for practical selfdefence

Learn dojo discipline and respect for seniors, which helps in developing your character and building your confidence

Train your mind, body and spirit to move in sync with the attacker

Better manage stress and violence with a calm mind

Improve alertness, bodily coordination and reflexes

Learn to respect and care for one another

Promote active and healthy lifestyle

Suitable for all ages including children, ladies and elderly

At NSRCC, we have a lively, close-knit Aikido community. Our youngest student is five years old, and our oldest is 28, while the average age is around 15 years old. It is heart-warming to see the young adults welcoming new students and organising monthly birthdays to foster togetherness and camaraderie. We create a safe and enjoyable environment for students to learn Aikido while learning about themselves and caring for those around them. Aikido Classes are held every Sunday (except Public Holidays) from 3.00pm to 4.00pm for Adults and 4.00pm to 5.00pm for Kids. If you are keen to register yourself or your children, email to S&R@nsrcc.com.sg.

HOW DO I IMPROVE MY Reviewed by Dr Valerie Tey,

a T32 dental specialist in prosthodontics

Smiling is the most direct manifestation of joy and happiness. A beautiful smile conveys warmth, opens doors and allows you to connect with others instantly. Read on to find out how you can enhance your smile through alterations to the shape, colour, and position of your teeth. 1) My smile is crooked and I want straighter teeth. What are my options? You can straighten your teeth through braces or aligners. Traditional braces treatment involves attaching metal or ceramic brackets and wires to gently move your teeth into the desired position. Clear aligners utilize a series of custom plastic moulds to move your teeth gradually into the final position. Alternatively, some milder tooth alignment issues may be addressed with veneers or other cosmetic restorations. Aligners can be used to straighten your teeth

2) I have yellow teeth, what can I do? You can get your teeth professionally whitened by visiting a dentist for an in-office whitening session, during which the dentist may use a whitening agent to bleach your discoloured teeth – the results are instant. Alternatively, you may also purchase a takehome kit from your dentist to whiten your teeth in the comfort of your home.

In-office teeth whitening

3) My teeth are small and oddly shaped. How can I change it? Teeth shapes and gaps can be quickly rectified by applying veneers to your teeth. These are thin pieces of porcelain that are attached to your teeth to augment the shape, size and colour of your teeth. They can cover chips in teeth and look very natural.

Dr Valerie Tey giving treatment to a patient

4) How can I benefit from a better smile? Having a better smile not only makes you look good, but also gives your confidence a boost!

A beautiful smile conveys warmth and connects people

KHOO WEI LIANG 16 April 2022 NSRCC Kranji Hole #2

I am very happy to hit a hole-in-one at NSRCC Kranji Hole #2! It was unexpected as I am a beginner in golf, and I just joined NSRCC two months ago.

1 May 2022 NSRCC Changi Hole #12

It is a fantastic feeling to hit my 5 wood on the sweet spot; 164m from the Blue Tee, straight onto the green, then the ball rolled straight in. Most importantly, witnessed by my golfing buddies.

TRAINING SHAFT

-LEAN AT IMPACT

By Marc Kawasoe,

Director of Golf, The Golfing Lab

A

good golf swing consists of a precise hand action in tandem with the efficient use of the body.

The hands and arms need to have the freedom to accelerate during the downswing. They are the speed producers of the swing. The body does play its role in the swing, but acts more as a “stabiliser” in the golf swing. The longest hitters create the fastest hand speed and completely dump that energy into the back of the ball. One of the longest hitters on tour, Cameron Champ, has exceptional handspeed during the first half of the downswing (28.62 mph).

Address Position

Top of the Swing

The feel that you would want to have, is to fire the clubhead into the back of the ball. For starters, you would want to make sure you stay relaxed at the address position. Tension is a killer, and it typically causes one to overuse the body, especially turning the shoulders. You need to “snap” the club at impact. To achieve more speed and consistency, the key is to obtain the “feel” and that your back needs to face the target as you initiate the downswing with your arms. The hands and wrists will then have to unhinge, allowing the clubhead to compress the back of the ball. From there, the body can then rotate through impact to complete the swing. Although this might feel “handsy” to a certain degree, it will allow you to add more compressions at impact and increase your accuracy and distance!
