President & Vice President’s Address When you look back at the year you’ve had, what are some thoughts that sprung up?
Not too long ago, twenty of us came together to form the 21st Main Committee and assume responsibility of NTU ODAC. Soon after, another eighty individuals joined us, with the common passion for adventure. We worked together tirelessly to conduct a wide variety of events to promote the spirit of adventure. Thanks to the hard work of our respective Event Committees members and helpers, our events – Adventure Trail Challenge, Pumpfest and FOOT – were great successes. Through several family events held throughout the year, such as ODAC Family Day @ Sentosa, No Paint No Gain, ODAC Chinese New Year Celebration and ZODAC Dragonboat, we hoped that you have all enjoyed your time here and made new friends!
An adventure isn’t about the thrill of hanging on a rope off the side of a mountain. Adventure is an attitude that we must apply to the day to day obstacles in life. We overcame challenges. We adapted to situations. We stepped out of our comfort zones. The past year had its ups and downs and we’ve all been able to draw from the experience and grow in our own distinct ways. We hope that through it all, we learnt ways to better ourselves as individuals and deal with future challenges that await. To our Sub-Committee members: It has been a fulfilling year with each and every one of you. From experiencing outdoor activities together, forging new friendships and doing things which we otherwise might not do, we hope that your ODAC experience has been a fruitful one. It is through stepping out of our comfort zone when we develop our character and build strong friendships. Thank you for devoting your time to plan the different events, for ODAC and representing ODAC. We believe that the success we had is largely due to your contribution to the club, even at the expense of personal sacrifice. Do continue to develop the adventurer in you!
To our Main Committee: Words cannot describe our appreciation for all of you. Thank you for all your hard work and selfless contributions. We started off in a tutorial room, wondering how to approach the year ahead. Somehow we managed to tackle all the difficulties we faced along the way, to emerge with a successful and rather smooth sailing year. As we venture off to different paths in pursuit of our own adventures ahead, let us continue to keep in touch and meet up in future ODAC events! It has really been a great pleasure working with you. After all, life is meant for good friends and great adventures! To the Incoming Freshmen: Welcome to NTU ODAC! We hope you find joy and fulfillment in the journey you are about to embark on. You will meet challenges along the way, but at the same time, develop friendships that will accompany you through your university life. And perhaps through it all, you will learn to continually improve yourself with every difficulty you face. As you flip through the magazine, we hope that it brings back wonderful memories of the year you spent in NTU ODAC! Perhaps when you flip through the magazine a few years later, you will reminiscence the time you had with us! Thank you for being part of NTU ODAC. Thank you for the opportunity to serve all of you in the past year. The greatest adventure of your lives is always ahead of you. Go find it!

Adventure Sports (AdSports) is currently into its 10th year of running. We are a group of adventure sports enthusiasts who organises family events for ODAC members as well as the general public, to bring like-minded people together. Through planning and organising these events, friendships were forged and great memories were created. We hope that the spirit and enthusiasm of adventure sports will only grow as the years go by!
NO NO PAINT PAINT NO NO GAME GAME
NO PAINT NO GAME is a paintball event combined with sidegames event organized at the beginning of the school year to serve as an opportunity for the different subcomms to bond through this first ADSPORTS ODAC family event. We made use of the colorful paintball theme to have a mass game involving colored powder. Not only did the participants enjoy the friendly paintball competitions between teams, there was also a great number of positive responses with regards to the mass game as everyone had fun throwing colored powder around, creating a beautiful mess!!! It was indeed an opportunity of great bonding time with other subcomm members. There were lots of laughter and it's truly WORK PLAY LOVE HUAT!!!!
GLO-RIDER
Glo-rider! An overnight cycling event where we rode into the light, quite literally! Spanning a total of 6 hours, the group began it's journey from pasir ris park, buzzing with excitement. Adorned in glowing neon lightsticks, we lit up the way as we cycled to the marina barrage. Food and snacks were applenty as we cheered and motivated each other to press on and overcome the physical aspect of the 51km route. What better way to make friends than to go through a gruelling legs day together
ZODAC
ZODAC (a wordplay on Zodiac and ODAC) is an event made up of two exciting activities - a Zodiac themed telematch, and a Dragonboat race! Held after the dreary midterms, ZODAC was a much welcomed break as various subcommittees came together in a laughter-filled afternoon. New friendships were forged through games that tested one's wits, athletic prowess, and more importantly, teamwork. And even though for many of them it was their first time dragon boating, everyone had great fun!
PADDLES UP
Paddles Up is an annual public event organized by Adsports involving kayaking over long distances. This year, we challenged our participants to kayak 38km in 2 days around the picturesque Perhentian Islands. When the going gets tough, the tough gets going -- while the journey was tiring, mutual encouragement kept us enduring the distance and braving the waves. A snorkeling trip featuring coral reefs, fishes and even a giant turtle also provided a respite between our kayaking trips. Our participants had great fun and it was a successful finale to our adsports journey!
Hello fellow members of ATC 17, It’s been a great year with you guys. How are all of you doing? It’s been a long journey - we braved through multiple thunderstorms, earthquakes, and crises - but here we are. Standing at the top of the world, undefeatable. Sometimes we wonder why you think pink hair is cool Sometimes we wonder why you sign up for adventure club when you got curfew. Sometimes we wonder why you don’t want to trek Fansipan. Sometimes we wonder why you forgot about your VISA. Sometimes we wonder why you like to ask so many questions. Sometimes we wonder why you don’t edit the sign off of your emails. Sometimes we wonder why you suck at Fun Run even when you started earlier. Sometimes we wonder why you are always so sleepy and quiet. Sometimes we wonder why you think that your table tennis number one. Sometimes we wonder why you are so rigid. Sometimes we wonder why you like dogs so much. Sometimes we wonder why you like to keep your hair so long when you are short. Sometimes we wonder why you like to shamelessly put so much makeup during camp. Sometimes we wonder why you left out the ATC logo. Sometimes we wonder why you look like your twin brother. Sometimes we wonder why you act like a child. Sometimes we wonder why you roast chicken so much. Sometimes we wonder why you like to cook curry so much. Sometimes we wonder why you don’t want to cut your hair. Sometimes we wonder why you like to mumble to yourself. But somehow, we sometimes cannot help it but to miss arguing and quarrelling with you guys. We want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your contribution towards the committee. Most of our requests are sudden and difficult but nonetheless you guys will always fulfill them all.
没有你们真的不行 有了你们就真的行 三人一条心黄土变成金 Anyway, we have walked countless miles together for the past one year. We believe that the friendship that we have forged will walk us further together for the many decades ahead. See you when we see you :) ATC DONG-SUA-SA!

The Freshmen Outdoors Overseas Trip (FOOT) aims to impart the ODAC family love and share the ODAC spirit to those seeking adventure as a lifestyle. FOOT’17 was held from 12th July 2017 to 16th July 2017. The 5 days 4 nights event took the organizing committee almost an entire year of meticulous planning and executing a countless number of games, overseas and night cycling (ESPECIALLY NIGHT CYCLING) recces in order to ensure a safe but unforgettable experience for both freshies and seniors alike.
Walking down Memory Lane.... FOOT 17 started off with a sub comm trip to Berkelah Falls where we gave everyone a taste of trekking outdoors and a rewarding view of the waterfall.
We had a Christmas chalet, which brought seniors and subcommittee members from the FOOT family together to celebrate the joyous occasion.
After which, our work year officially begins where we organized CAMPout together with Trek comm, a camp catered especially for all ODAC committee members to be bonded with one another.
To Overseas team: We climbed Pelepah more than enough in our lifetimes just so it would be safe for our participants. Thanks for all the good times.
To Games team: Thanks for the exciting games and time spent planning them out.
To Chong Boon: Thank you for your tireless effort regarding all our FOOT publicity and shirts. Your creativity is priceless.
To Nadya and Rose: Thanks for helping out so much and lessening our burdens by a ton, being meticulous in your work while supporting the committee.

To our dearest subcommittee: We’re not too sure about you, but time flew by pretty quickly for us this academic year. It felt like it was yesterday when we were still deciding whether we should take up the role of being your SPOs and before we knew it, the work year has ended. Without a doubt, the friendships we forged have outweighed any regret we ever felt. With utmost sincerity, we would like to thank you guys from the bottom of our hearts for giving us the opportunity to grow alongside with you over the year, as well as for creating unforgettable memories and teaching us valuable lessons along the way. To the Awesome Admins: So thankful to have you guys to help us out with admin matters. Really appreciate you guys coming down for the cash booths. Clarice, thanks for helping us organise meetings. You’ve really made our life easier. As for Yuh Ling, our PF XMM, we know some of us like to “suan” you a lot but we would really like to thank you for being our MVP. From creating of the Wufoo forms to the chasing of debts, the whole event would not be possible without your help. To the Phenomenal Proggies: Really appreciate you guys putting in so much effort into organising Fun Climb this year. Give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done. Thanks for taking charge of the allocation of the manpower especially both Jia Liang and Nuttyzel for constantly running around, making sure the event runs smoothly. Thanks for providing us with the phones for the scoring too! As for Calolin, thanks for taking up the stressful and tiring job as timekeeper. It was not easy but you still persevered till the very end without a single word of complaint! To the Pretty Pubs: And here’s to our Pubs. Well, your job is definitely not easy. From the designing of the logo to the constant update of our social media accounts. We would not have an event if weren’t for you guys. Thanks for being patient with our demands despite your other commitments. Felicia, well done on the website! We know you have 0 coding background when we assigned you but you did an awesome job anyway. Hui-Lin, thanks for always initiating all the designing. Really appreciate you always providing us with your creative ideas. Joanna, thanks for designing the poster. And Candy, we know you don’t really have much photoshop or video editing skills. Really appreciate you taking the time off to learn them and maintaining the social media post! To the Lovely Logs: You guys did an awesome job. The log flow was perfect. The log support during the event was perfect. The packing up was perfect. Brandon, Zijin and Kipwai – we know we have said this many times but you guys really did an awesome job. Brandon the busy man, dance champ, we really have never ever regretted having you in Pumpfest. Zi Jin, Mr Charming, thanks for being so responsible and so reliable all the time. Keep it up! And Kip Wai – it’s really a blessing to have you with us! To my Superb Seniors: My seniors. Yes, our awesome seniors. No words can express the amount of gratitude we have for you guys. We really admire your dedication. Some of you have already started working and have your own life to live, but you guys never fail to take some time off to help us with the event. Guan Ri, Lim Ying, Jonavan, Zunchen, JJ and Jarelle, we would like to thank you guys from the bottom of our hearts. Everything would not have been possible without your help and guidance.

“Why do you put yourself through so much hardship?” – a question no stranger to my dearest comrades. Indeed, why? Why would anyone want to spend thousands of dollars just to put themselves on the base of a mountain, only to laboriously trudge their way up the never-ending steep slopes that may or may not reward you with a good view. Why would anyone want to put themselves at the mercy of the unpredictable mountain weather, or brace themselves for the numbing cold peaks, that even six layers of clothes fail to keep you warm from? After countless formidable 90o rock walls, freezing rivers with insane rapids, cliffs that lead you straight to hell and sulphur gas that burns through your lungs, we can only look at our triumphant team and wonder how much it truly takes to break the human spirit. 5 trips and 8 peaks later, the answer is clear. There is nothing that can beat the euphoria of being on the mighty mountains, and there is nothing stronger than the morale of a team. The strength and support of those around us help lift every heavy step, and help warm every shivering bone. To us, the forest is our home, and everyone else, our family. The fresh air, the magnificent views, the crystal-clear waters and the enchanting wild animals - who wouldn’t want to stand above a sea of clouds? Or lie under a blanket of stars by the company of those which we share our hearts with? Who wouldn’t want to sit by the fire you started with your own two hands? Or munch on that tender chicken you so painstakingly carried up the rocks? The mountains push you. It forces you to grow, to step out of your comfort zone, to challenge yourself and to try things you’ve never thought you could. It teaches you to stay persistent, to be respectful and most of all, to be humble. But even after all the unforgettable experiences and invaluable life lessons that the mountains have offered, perhaps, the true reason to this mystery of why we trek, will forever be hidden somewhere between the bottom of the climb and the summit. We will forever be grateful for our subcommittee members, for giving us the opportunity to grow with them over this past year. Thank you for being patient with us and for supporting us every step of the way. It has been an absolute joy watching all of you grow, from unseasoned trekkers to trek leaders. No matter where the roads may lead you next, it was an honour to once walk alongside you brilliant souls. So bags up! The mountains are calling. We may be a million miles from a million dollars, but nobody can ever spend our wealth.
Love, Shermaine & Leonard

ADVENTURE TRAIL CHALLENGE What is Adventure Trail Challenge? ATC is an adventure race which requires participants to undergo various adventure sports such as trail biking, trail running, kayaking, abseiling and also complete an obstacle course in the shortest possible time. During which, participants’ wits are put to the test with challenging puzzles as well. Participants get to go through nature trails and parks of Singapore, providing them a chance to relax their minds. ATC not only trains the physique, it also encourages positive mental health. ATC requires teams of four or two to complete the race and tasks as a team. It fosters team spirit, communication, and trust amongst team members. Having to complete the entire race, participants’ perseverance and endurance are put to the test. It also encourages cross training and promotes multidisciplinary racing, serving as an introduction to biathlons or triathlons which are more strenuous and physically demanding. Dry Run happened during the early part of second semester and was the first ever event run by ATC 2017, engaging seniors across the various sub-committees in NTU ODAC. Through the race, we were able to put our game stations to the test and explore additional features that could enhance the race experience of our racers. Thanks to the feedback gathered, we gained valuable insights from the seniors to improve the route for the upcoming events. Step Up is a scaled-down event of ATC where all subcommers from NTU ODAC will join as participants. It happened on the first weekend of recess week during the second semester. Step Up serves as an opportunity for the committee to find out the loopholes in their planning and to expose themselves to the execution of an event. It was an enjoyable event and ATC had received full praise for their good planning and even better execution.
28 MAY 2017 28th May 2017 was a big day for ATC 2017, where all of our efforts were demonstrated to the public. We started off at a block beside Keat Hong Community Club where the 410 participants who attended ran down to Teck Whye lane for their mini obstacle course station. The participants then darted towards Bukit Batok where their maneuverability were put to the test in facing the arduous trek in the forest. Following which, they traveled to Jurong East for the IQ station where they exercised their creativity and wits in solving puzzles. Thereafter, the racers transitted to Pandan reservoir for the Kayaking station, then travelled back to Bukit Batok for their teambuilding station and green corridor for the biking station. Greeted by the bustling music from the Redbull event vehicle, the participants have to go through a six level urban abseiling at a multi-storey carpark before they crossed the finish line. The event ended off with a prize presentation by Mr Zaqy, advisor of KHCC. ATC 2017 would not have been possible if we were to do without any of the committee members. All their contributions and efforts toward the event were crucial and valuable. It has been a year of ups and downs, and the perseverance and determination displayed by our members constituted to the huge success of the event. Well done! :)
15-18 JUNE 2017
PUMPFEST
This year, Pumpfest presented CroXXing Limits – where participants take on tough, arduous routes to challenge and surpass their limits, both physical and mental; building a sense of resilience and perseverance amongst our climbers. This also marks the 20th year that NTU ODAC has organised this highly anticipated annual bouldering competition. Being one of the pioneering bouldering competitions in Singapore, Pumpfest continues to draw the attention of the national climbing community. Pumpfest 2017 also received recognition from the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) as an official bouldering competition with professional standards – a first in all our years of running this competition, thus attracting many international climbers from all around the globe to participate in Pumpfest 2017.
With support from the People’s Association, we are honoured to be the first to set foot in the Town Square of the newly opened Our Tampines Hub ¬– Singapore’s first-ever integrated community and lifestyle hub. Pumpfest 2017 was held over 4 days instead of the usual 3, due to the introduction of the semi-finals. Not only that, we also got a French route setter to plan our additional route settings this year! Pumpfest CroXXing Limits would not have been possible without our highly efficient and capable team! We also received massive support from the ODAC community, seniors and our friends over at the University Mountaineering Club. No words can express our gratitude for all your help, but nonetheless, thank you! From planning Pumpfest to the most minute detail to ensuring that we had a seamless flow of events, many friendships were forged and the team grew closer to one another. It has been an arduous but fulfilling year for all of us. To more suppers, climbing and studying sessions! (Yes, we do study too. We are students after all.)
ALLEZ!
What other way to end the AY16/17 work year then with our final event, FOOT! The 5D4N camp was held from 12th to 16th July 2017 in which 68 freshies took part in NTU ODAC’s annual Freshmen Overseas Orientation Trip a.k.a F.O.O.T in collaboration with Cairnhill Community Club! This year’s theme brought about the Roman Empire, where the freshmen were divided into four orientation groups – Ottoman, Decius, Aurelius and Claudius. They then partake in activities together which include games, night cycling, rock climbing, kayaking, outdoor cooking, campfire and trekking which were specially planned by the FOOT 17 subcommittee, through a year of hard work and dedication. The freshmen were also joined by ODAC seniors, who promoted the ODAC family spirit and also provided advice for them before they head onwards to the start of their NTU adventure.
The first day of camp aims to break the ice between fresh faces, through icebreaker and station games around the western side of Singapore. These games allowed the freshmen and senior to forge new friendships as they carry on through to the remaining days of the camp. Freshmen were then introduced to the thrill of night cycling, starting from Chua Chu Kang park through Kranji Dam to Lim Chu Kang Road and it all ended back in NTU. This was a fresh experience of night cycling on the scenic roads of Singapore for many freshies and the reception was awesome as the freshies enjoyed themselves to the fullest. The second day of camp involved the freshmen taking part in adventure sports. The 4 groups were brought to Climbers Lab, where they had hands-on experience with rock climbing and bouldering, and also Pandan reservoir where many were introduced to open deck kayaking.

12-16 JULY 2017 The main draw of which sets FOOT camp apart from any other camps would be our overseas component. The third day of camp sees the participants being brought to trek and experience the natural beauty of Pelepah Waterfalls, which is situated in Kota Tinggi, Malaysia. We spent 2 nights there where a cooking competition was held to test the freshmen’s cooking and creative skills, and a campfire was held on the last night there, where participants sang and dance around the warmth of the campfire, bringing the camp’s atmosphere to its peak. The finale night was held in Cairnhill Community Club, where the freshmen were paired up with a senior from a different OG where they exchange gifts and also share experiences from ODAC and NTU life. As such, these seniors act as a mentor to aid the freshmen adapt to university life. They also watched performances held by a YEC group and also by their our GLs! Other than the physically demanding experiences of FOOT17, it provided freshmen with a range of thrilling activities. All these activities provided a fun-filled experience for all participants and the fostered bonds with one another that will last them through the test of time.
