Looking back, time really flies. From the formation of our Maincomm and Subcomms at the start of our journey, to the heartfelt comm-sharing we presented during Finale Night at FOOT, the year seemed to have passed in an instant. This year, we explored 17 beautiful destinations together; re-discovered some lesser known paths of Singapore at ATC; fuelled the bouldering scene with Pumpfest; and delivered the great outdoors and the spirit of adventure at FOOT. It has been an exhilarating journey. We are far from the mere sum of our parts. Our success cannot be measured by the scale and reach of our events; rather, pride yourselves on the friendships and kinships which have been nurtured along the way. As you reminiscence on the various events we had – such as Family Day, Ballywood, Night Rider, Campout, CNY and Do you know Da Wae – rejoice in the products of your heartwork, for the memories we have created here will last a lifetime! While the year was dotted with adversities, we all faced them with zest and gusto, and grew stronger and wiser through each obstacle that we overcame. We hope you realise that the true spirit of adventure lies in the resilience, courage, and faith to embrace the unknown, and to adapt to it throughout our lives. To Adsports, ATC, Pumpfest, FOOT, Trek, and our Maincomm, words are unable to adequately express our gratitude to all of you. Thank you, for putting your heart and soul in all that you did, and for creating a world that you so deeply believed in. May the NTU ODAC experience – that adrenaline rush when you kayak against the waves, that awe you felt while standing above a sea of clouds, and the surge of cold when you jump into Pelepah – live long in your minds!
Wa Kaliya….. Wa Kaliya….Wa Kaliya, Ka Le Pa, Ka Le Pa! Yours truly, Qi Han & Jia Liang President & Vice President 22nd Management Committee

WHO ARE WE? Adventure Sports (AdSports) is currently into its 11th year of running. We are a group of adventure sports enthusiasts who organizes family events for ODAC members throughout the year as well as the final event ‘Paddles Up’ which is open to the general public. Our aim is to bond the ODAC community and bring like-minded people together. Through planning and organizing these events, friendships were forged and great memories were created. We hope that the spirit and enthusiasm of adventure sports will grow as the years go by! Thank you Adsports11 for all your efforts put in and trying your best to make each event exciting yet affordable at the same time. You guys did great! Ballywood was the first Adsports event
held in the academic year, which was planned with the objective of bonding the participants from different sub-committees. The event mainly focused on playing various ball games together with Bubble soccer as the “highlight activity, though more falling was involved compared to actual soccer! The event ended off with a DIY Barbeque session where the participants built a BBQ pit from scratch to promote team bonding amongst the ODAC members, which was a fun experience despite the sweltering heat.
10
Nightrider, a 34km night cycling event,
was the 2nd event organised by our Adsports 11th committee. Held in late January, it served as an opportunity for ODAC members to catch up with one another after the winter break. Through fun activities like maze-hunting, supper stops and station games, participants were able to interact and bond with friends from other sub-committees. The highlight of the event was the breathtaking sunrise at Marina Barrage that morning. It was no doubt a fun night for our ODAC family!
Paddles Up
R u lost??
DO U KNOW DA WAE to
Adsports Event 3? Our third event was held in NTU and was based on an amazing race concept but with a twist! Participants were required to use orienteering and mapping skills to figure out the location of their next station -- and that’s how you know da wae! The event ended off with the highlight activity - Archery Tag, where the entire ODAC family came together to pit their archery skills against one another. It was certainly an exciting showdown between the different subcommittees!
is an annual longdistance overseas kayaking expedition, organized by Adsports11. This year, Paddles Up’18 was planned around Pangkor Island, Malaysia. Us participants had all steeled ourselves for 32km of open-sea kayaking over the course of two days. Yet, on the first day, most of us would never have expected the 2m-high ferocious waves, torrential rain and billowing winds. Despite being in such dire situation, it is rather heartwarming to notice most, if not all of the participants squeezing their every bit of effort to continue paddling forward. Fortunately, Mother Nature rewarded us with calm waters on the second leg of our expedition, allowing us to finally appreciate what Pulau Pangkor had to offer. Apart from kayaking, there were other aqua activities in store for participants, including snorkeling, Jet Ski and Big Mable. Not only that, everyone had the opportunity to ride on ATVs to explore the jungle within Pangkor Island. It was truly an eye-opening expedition and a well-deserved trip to mark the end of a long work year.

TREK
12
TO OUR DEAREST SUBCOMMERS When it came to trekking, one question had always bugged me – “what exactly makes trekking awesome?” It doesn’t make sense at all, you pay a few hundred dollars to experience the most untenable of physical conditions that would make a one-star hotel look like Shangri-La. So why would I pay to suffer so much? If it’s to chase a high, it would be much cheaper and less painful to get tipsy and wasted. And if that’s putting it cheaply, why not opt for an other-worldly, fine-dining experience in a Michelin-starred restaurant or perhaps, enjoy a five-star tour around Paris. While I’m not saying trekking is better because we all engage in a myriad of activities, there is something perplexing and mystifying about trekking that somehow draws trekkers back into the woods, and I don’t exactly understand why. If you pressed me for an answer, initially, I would have said that it’s about the family and friends, or about a love of na ture, or a passion for the sport. While undeniably correct, now I find these type of answers off-point, and only scratching the surface of the issue. Because, what I realised after a while is that trekking is that so much more, it is about life. The view is only special because of the people around you, and the feeling when you’ve finally reached is only so good after the arduous trek. But despite that, that fleeting moment at the top is insignificant and fickle compared to the entire journey, because the journey through life is what matters most. Thank you to all Trek XI members, Trek seniors, and ODAC seniors who have made this year special. To our subcommers, we could not have asked for a better bunch of nonsensical, headache-inducing, yet upright individuals whose character was never in doubt. It’s been an honour to grow and learn alongside everyone, and no matter what trails you all embark in the future, we hope that you will always be close to heaven and down to earth. Love, Han Wei & Hui Lin

Hello ATC 18, Yes it’s us again, The SPOs that had you run all around Singapore, The SPOs that insulted you all the time, The SPOs that made you stay up late all night yet wake up early in the morning, The SPOs that nagged at you all day to finish work, The SPOs that made you test run all kinds of nonsense... But you still... Didn’t care and played along with it, Decided what you wanted and what you thought was right and did it, Came for every meeting although you said you wanted to leave it, Said whatever you wanted without caring whether we heard it, Helped us with stuff although you were busy enough without it, Stayed up late all night although we didn’t tell you to do it, Waited for us all morning although we didn’t make it, Continued submitting work although we didn’t accept all of it, And most importantly of all, You stayed with us all the way till the end, until we all made it! Thank you ATC 18 for the wonderful time this year! We couldn’t have done it without all of you and all of your stubbornness! ATC 18 would have been nothing if not for the effort each and everyone of you put in! Here’s to a great time ahead and all the best for your futures and for ATC 19! ONE LAST AND FINAL TIME! Sincerely, Chester and Benedict Your Beloved SPOs

Moving onto its 15th exhilarating year, Adventure Trail Challenge (ATC) was held at Hillview Community Centre this year. ATC is a sub-urban, multidisciplinary, time-based adventure race designed for both amateurs as well as professional racers. Participants get to experience an array of thrilling adventure elements, ranging from kayaking, trail biking, mountain running and high elements to obstacle courses, team-building tasks and many more. The light shower in the morning did not dampen the 250 participants mood as they traverse some 30 KM across the northern parts of Singapore. They were first met with a grueling 10 KM trek across the undulating terrain of Mandai Track 15. Next, they had to kayak two rounds around Lower Seletar Reservoir, whilst keeping their lap time roughly equal. Fresh out of water, they then cycled on trails around Punggol Barat Island. As the first linear route for ATC, where the start and end point of the race were different, the committee was proud to have achieve this logistical feat which involves transporting participants belongings and bicycle across the race. This year’s race also had 10 games stations this year, an increase from previous years. ATC19 will be back next year, promising a fun-filled race for the adventure racers in Singapore!

This year, Pumpfest presented Risk It, Reach It – packed with challenging routes for participants to “risk”both their physical and mental strengths, and in the process, for them to“reach”a sense of fulfillment when they have solved these Bouldering routes.
Going back to the basics of the sport, in efforts to incorporate more Bouldering elements, we decided to revamp the official Pumpfest logo. The new logo centres on a ‘volume’, a tile specific to the sport of Bouldering. Along the goal of grooming Bouldering in the wider community, we also took up a partnership with a beneficiary. We invited STARdy Kaki, a group of children from low-income backgrounds, to participate in our non-competitive Fun Climb. This partnership gave exposure to these children, who have limited access to such an unconventional sport.
2018 was a big year for Pumpfest as it marks the 21st year that this highly anticipated national competition has been running for. Additionally, the wider bouldering scene has been rising to provide much support to Pumpfest 2018. Recently introduced as an Olympic sport, Bouldering has been growing as a competitive sport. From both the local and overseas scenes, there was not only an increase in diversity among our participants (with international climbers from Thailand, Vietnam etc.), but in event spectatorship as well (attracting livestream viewership from overseas). The rules of International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) were also been revised to match this growth. We saw this opportunity to align our competition with the updated rules – to shift the points weightage from attempts to completion. This enhanced our event’s goal; evoking a stronger sense of fulfillment via completion of a greater number of routes.
Pumpfest Risk It Reach It would not have been possible without the hard work and resilience of our 21st Pumpfest Committee! The success of the event is also largely attributed to the ODAC community, seniors, and friends over at the University Mountaineering Club (UMC). We are thankful for our regular sponsors such as Royal Banner and Soleus, and for new sponsors such as Fitness First and Build Your Own Protein (BYOP). Thank you partners for the support and guidance that has been kindly lent to us! As for the planning committee, running the event was not an easy feat, but the challenges posed have brought our team together; learning and growing alongside one another. It has been an arduous yet fulfilling year for us. The event may have ended but our friendships forged don’t stop here – here’s to more dinners, climbing and drinking sessions!

Freshmen Outdoor Overseas Trip (FOOT) is an event organised by NTU ODAC for incoming freshmen to NTU to experience the life and culture in NTU ODAC. It is a 5D4N journey which involves both local and overseas components, where the participants are exposed to various outdoor activities. The first half of the camp is held in Singapore, where they engage in station games, night cycling, kayaking and rock climbing. The second half of the camp is held in Kota Tinggi, Malaysia, as the participants head to Pelepah Falls for campsite activities such as outdoor cooking, campfire and waterfall trekking. The FOOT subcommittee includes programmers, logistics officer, treasurer, secretary, publicity officer and business manager who all played an essential role in making FOOT’18 Camp a success. Our proggies brainstormed different plans and went on countless recces to make sure that the games, night cycling and overseas component of the camp was a success. They had to manage their manpower and the various SOPs for different situations that could possible crop up during the actual camp. Their meticulousness led to a safe yet fun and exciting experience for the participants.
Our logistics officer, treasurer, secretary, pubs and bizmag also played an important part as they ensured the smooth execution of the event, such as making sure the proggies have the logs they needed, checking that the various key appointment holders of the camp like the GLs know what they need to do and helped to find sponsorships for the camp. During their free time, they will also double up to help the proggies! Without the team’s dedication and effort, FOOT’18 Camp would not be a success. During the camp, these group of people also miss out on the bonding time with their own OGs, and they are the true hidden heroes of the camp. Of course, FOOTComm is not just about work. In FOOT, we form a family. While we mainly bond over work and complain about how tiring it all is (which we like to believe is all worth it in the end), we bond over other activities too! We celebrate christmas together, gather during chinese new year, study for exams and have drinking sessions together! For FOOT’18 subcommittee, their time spent in the past year is just the beginning of their friendship, and they still have a long way to go, beginning from their first clubbing session after the camp ended. Here’s to a great 2018, and many better years ahead. FOOT’18 committee signing off!
