Cyril returns to duty BY VOICE REPORTER CYRIL Ramaphosa is back at work after a week of self-isolation. The president had tested positive for Covid-19 after delivering the eulogy at FW de Klerk’s state memorial on December 12. In a statement issued by the Minister in the Presidency, Mondli Gungubele, Ramaphosa thanked all South Africans and leaders and friends internationally who conveyed their good wishes during this period. In turn, the President wished all those infected with Covid19 a safe and speedy recovery. Ramaphosa delivered his eulogy at the last apartheid president’s state memorial in Cape Town last Sunday and then tested positive for the virus shortly afterwards. It was reported that the president started feeling ill shortly after the memorial service. Gungubele said that while Ramapho-

sa appeared to be in good spirits, he was monitored by the South African Military Health Service of the South African National Defence Force during his quarantine in Cape Town. Deputy resident David Mabuza took o v e r R a m a p h o s a ’s responsibilities for the week. Ramaphosa has since returned to duty and will chair the final Cabinet meeting for 2021 this Wednesday.

NO GOODBYE: Heart FM veteran host Clarence Ford

Legend sacked as station ‘moves with times’ HEART 104.9FM has fired radio legend Clarence Ford – a day after he announced his decision to quit the popular Cape Town station.

Clarence, 54, who had been with Heart for 24 years, said he was on his way to the studios in Green Point for his regular 12-3pm lunchtime show on Monday, when he got a phone call from programme manager Vernon Nel informing him of his dismissal.

“I got a phone call to say there is a letter that I must read,” said Clarence, who was due to hang up his mic at the end of February. “The letter says my services are not required any longer.”

Contract He immediately phoned station manager Renee Redelinghuys for clarity and was told his contract was terminated with immediate effect. In a statement on Monday afternoon, Heart thanked Clarence and said though they were “sad to see him leave”, the station needed to change with the times.

BY ROBIN ADAMS “With an ever-changing radio landscape over the past few years, and constantly changing listening patterns, we have had to consider options around retaining existing audiences as well as growing for the future, with a view to remaining one of the top radio stations in the province – this has resulted in refreshing our line-up. “While we would have preferred to retain the services of Clarence Ford in some way or form by retaining his beloved Sunday show, for example, he has elected to make a clean break from Heart FM sadly, which we have had to accept, respect, and support that he makes this decision for his own best interest at heart,” they said. Clarence’s sacking follows his revelations in a Weekend Argus interview that bullying by a senior manager resulted in his decision to walk out. Former Heart staff members also spoke of a toxic work environment where bosses allowed sexual harassment to go unpunished. “I’ve had some run-ins with management. And there was a particularly bad one in Feb-

ruary where I had to draw the line,” he explained. “I cannot be in a space where my values are compromised. “The February experience related to an attempt to bully on a public platform. “And I was on the receiving end of that attempt ... I don't take to bullies very kindly.

Management He added: “I demanded that they (management) rein in the bully and they refused to, or didn’t feel it necessary. “I said I can’t respect this kind of behaviour. And if they’re going to remain silent, they would be complicit, and I couldn’t stay.” The incident he refers to is with Denver Apollus, the head of radio innovation at Heart. Responding to the allegations of bullying, Apollus said “Clarence is definitely talking about me”, but insisted there was “absolutely no truth” to the claims. “It’s definitely not the reason for Clarence’s departure. “I don’t even engage much with Clarence. “I don’t know where the bullying comes from. Clarence – who has a weekly Sunday evening slot, called Me

Time, and a weekday lunchtime show – revealed the writing was on the wall after contract talks Vernon Nel, the programme manager, last month. He said he was only offered the Sunday night show, and that “a reposition of the business” meant he was no longer needed in the weekday line-up. Clarence went into work as usual for his 6pm show on Sunday. Little did he know it would be his last. “I wanted a chance to say goodbye and I was deluded to think I’d be given the chance. “It’s been a long ride and you want to say thank you. “There’s been a lot of love and it’s been a great journey. “I don’t get to say thank you. “It is sore,” he sobbed. “I’m at peace. But I always wanted to say goodbye. “I knew it was going to happen, I just thought it was going to happen at the end of February. “It’s come earlier and I don’t get a chance to say goodbye.” Clarence, who became a household name at Good Hope FM and P4 in his 32-year career on air, said he would be exploring entrepreneurial opportunities after leaving Heart.

Poor mom of 5 wins R14m A CAPE mother of five is going to have the best Christmas ever after she bagged the R14 million Lotto. National lottery operator Ithuba revealed the unemployed won the Lotto jackpot in the 8 December draw. She purchased her ticket using the manual selection, with a wager of R80.

The winner told Ithuba she had been living off a social grant, which took care of her family of five.

BY JOLENE MARRIAH-MAHARAJ “I am extremely happy and grateful to have won this jackpot, I have a big family and we all still live together in our small home,” says the woman, who remains anonymous. “This is an opportunity for me to move to a better area and to build a bigger house.” Oudtshoorn, known as the “ostrich capital”, is a dorpie in the Little Karoo region. The town’s economy is primarily reliant on ostrich farming and the tourism industry, which has

taken a severe knock as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Ithuba CEO Charmaine Mabuza says the latest winner has been struggling to make ends meet, but her SASSA days are now over.

They arrived at the cinema at around 7pm, but it’s unclear what film they saw. They were accompanied by Scott Disick, his friend Chris Reda and another male, according to a source. ARNIE TO GET GRANDCHILD NUMBER TWO ARNOLD Schwarzenegger is going to be an oupa for the second time. The 73-year-old actor’s daughter Katherine showed off her baby bump during an afternoon outing in Los Angeles last Thursday – the same day the news broke that she and actor Chris Pratt were expecting their second child together. Katherine, 32, went out for a coffee wearing black overalls that she paired with a beige long-sleeve shirt and matching sunglasses. Sources have revealed to People magazine recently that the couple was expecting another baby together. However, Katherine and Chris, 42, have yet to publicly announce the news themselves. He and Katherine are parents to 14-month-old daughter Lyla Maria, and he co-parents his son Jack, 9, with ex-wife Anna Faris. “I would love to have more, as many as the man upstairs will provide,” the Marvel star said. “We’ll do it. I’ll probably have to talk to Katherine about that but my plan is, let’s go.”

FOUND: 2 guns seized

4 in hof for huis robbery By GONTSE RIET FOUR men arrested with a stolen car and two guns appeared in the Strand Magistrates’ Court yesterday for house robbery. Police spokesperson Andrè Traut said “partnership policing” and the vigilance of a private security officer led to the arrest of the suspects in Gordon’s Bay on Sunday. “SAPS was notified by a security company that a vehicle, a white Hyundai, was flagged by Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) cameras as having been used in a house robbery earlier this month in Durbanville,” says Traut. “Police officers at the Gordons Bay SAPS were quick to react and started their search for the suspicious vehicle. “The vehicle was spotted and stopped in York Street. The occupants, four males – aged 24, 27, 30 and 32 – made a brief attempt to evade arrest but were unsuccessful. “Two unlicensed firearms without serial numbers and ammunition were discovered in the vehicle. “The vehicle was stolen during a house robbery in Somerset West last month.” In an unrelated matter, an investigation into the death of a 53-year-old man in Calitzdorp, on Sunday morning landed a 23-year-old man in jail. Cops were dispatched to the scene and on arrival found the victim, who was later declared dead. An autopsy to determine the cause of death will be done this week. The circumstances surrounding the death are under investigation. The suspect remains in police custody and will appear in court once charged. Anyone with information can contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111.

TWO years ago, Quinton Bradley Plaatjies took early retirement after being employed at the Department of Correctional Services for more than 35 years. In October last year, he vanished and police are now investigating how two people withdrew R100 000 from his bank account. The search for Plaatjies, who disappeared after receiving a R4 million retirement payout, has been widened to the rest of the country. His bank account has since been frozen. The case has been handed over to the Provincial Organised Crime Unit which is assisting the Missing Persons Unit. Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, appealed for information about Plaatjies’ whereabouts. “According to police information, recently retired Quinton Bradley Plaatjies was staying with friends in Nysschen Street in Ext 29 Bethelsdorp for the last three months. His friends last saw him on October 30, 2020, when they went away for two days.

Investigation “On their return on November 1, 2020, they found that his belongings were still at the house; however, he and his car were gone,” she says. The family says a man and a woman who withdrew money from his account had been caught on CCTV footage, which has yet to be released publicly and may assist with the investigation. Plaatjies’ new Ford Ecosport was found abandoned on November 7, 2020, outside of Beer Shack, Humewood, in Gqeberha. Anyone who can assist police in tracing Plaatjies is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Thembinkosi Cacadu at SAPS Bethelsdorp on 082 442 1667 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

One concrete house and two Wendy houses with 19 inhabitants on the property at 50 Herba Road in Woodlands, caught fire and with strong winds, the property and everything on it was burnt in less than an hour. Home owner Peter Matthews, 67, says he believes the incident was from God and that God will send a new blessing to them. “This is all God’s will, we could only stand by and watch our homes go up in flames, but I know there’s a greater will for this from God,” he says. “It was sad that the fire department sent a small fire truck with very little water that ran empty within a few

THREE people have been shot dead and two girls aged 12 and 14 have been injured in shootings that have rocked Wesbank. Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said the shootings were reported on Sunday, 12 December, while a resident said all of the victims were innocent casualties of a new gang trying to muscle in on the area. The 46-year-old male resident says: “All of the shootings happened quick after each other and none of the people shot were gangsters. “The one guy in Eyeberry Street was a Somali guy that was just coming home when they shot him, the other was a guy chilling by his cousins and the other three were just people lamming outside.

BY JUNIOR BESTER “I heard there was one car used for all the shootings and we think it was some new brasse trying to make a name for themselves but they now killed three innocent people.” Van Wyk confirmed a 24-year-old Somali man was killed in front of his home in Eyeberry Street at 8.45pm, found with a gunshot wound to his head, while another shooting took place at the same time in a street less than a kilometre away. “Also at 8.45pm, a murder occurred at a premises in Bethels Street where a 28-year-old male was found with a stomach wound, while

the suspects are unknown,” he adds. When the Daily Voice visited the Bethels Street address, the family said they did not want to speak about the incident, but they insisted the 28-year-old was not a gangster. “At 11.30pm, a murder and two attempted murders occurred at corners of Montcello and Willard Street in Wesbank. “A 17-year-old male was shot dead and two females aged 12 and 14 was wounded in their legs. “The victims were standing on the street corner when a silver vehicle drove past them and started shooting. “The suspects are unknown while no arrests have been made.”

Bullied matric girl gets special farewell A MITCHELLS Plain learner had her own dream matric ball after she claimed she had been bullied and excluded by her school. Beyoncé Davids, 18, from Westridge, is no stranger to grief, after she lost her brother Chauncey Davids seven years ago.

She also appeared in the Daily Voice this year when she spoke out about being exposed to Covid-19 positive cases at Mondale High. Chauncey, who was 14 and

BY VENECIA VALENTINE in Grade 9, died at his home in May 2014 after an experiment with chemicals went wrong. Beyoncé was 10 years old at the time and vowed to complete her schooling journey in honour of her boeta. After her Covid awareness stand in August, Beyonce said she was victimised and bullied at school, and was excluded from her matric classmates’ ball. Western Cape Education Department spokesperson Bronagh Hammond told Daily Voice at the time that

Mondale principal, Owen Bridgens, confirmed that no learner was forced to come to write the tests. And learners could not be given the option to write exams if they tested positive. Beyoncé’s mom Beverly decided to arrange a private celebration for her. She says: “Due to Covid-19 in 2020, we realised that a school matric ball in 2021 would be impossible, so we started planning something small for Beyoncé in December 2021. “Her classmates started planning a ball in November but due to speaking out about the Covid proto-

Donate your kids’ old school bag for re-use

JOYFUL: Nicolene Peters and Ouma

COLLECT: Catherine Versfeld A CAPE Town school bag project is appealing to mense to donate new or used bags to help a child in need. If you’ve outgrown your backpack, the Hands of Love organisation would love to have it. Catherine Versfeld started the organisation and recently launched the “I Got Your Bag” campaign, which is appealing to parents to donate their kids’ old school bags at four drop-off points in Cape Town. Catherine explains: “A friend and I were speaking about how some kids in South Africa were walking kilometres to school even on dirt roads with a plastic bag filled with books – and

BY VENECIA VALENTINE we know how heavy those school books can be. “So we thought about the concept of collecting bags to help these future leaders. “If you have kids or know kids that have school bags that they are no longer using o r d o n ’t n e e d a n y m o re , please arrange to drop them off with Hands of Love. “The majority of kids in under-resourced communities are walking kilometres every day just to get to school. “They don’t have bags to carry their books in and are using plastic bags. “You can bring those previously loved bags to one of

our drop-off points, and we will distribute them to those in need. “Please ensure that bags are cleaned before dropping them off.” The four drop-off points are Digicape in Roeland Square, Gardens; Digicape, 2nd Floor Red Panda Place, Pinelands; Curro Century City High School 2 Socrates Way, Century City; HTS Bellville Technical High School, corner of College and Strand road, Labiance, Bellville. Catherine and her team also have drop-off spots in Johannesburg and Durban.

LUNCH IS SERVED: Ouma Hilda prepping meals

OUMA SPOILS HOMELESS WITH CHRISTMAS LUNCH

STREET people near Town Centre in Eastridge had a lekker Christmas lunch prepared by their “guardian angel” ouma yesterday. The meal was served by the 84-year-old Hilda Classen, with the help of her family and neighbours, who decorated a parking lot, set up a Christmas tree and handed caps to all present. This is Ouma Hilda’s annual event – she has been feeding the homeless people in her community for the past two decades, using her pension money. Although she admits she’s now tired and needs more hands to prepare the meals, she says: “It makes me so happy, it gives that fulfilment

BY NOMZAMO YUKU knowing you’re making a difference in others’ lives. “I do this every year but it is always different people and something exciting for them. “Their smile makes me proud, when I see it, I know my effort is appreciated. “Today I baked, made salads and bought four beef tongues that I prepared last night and have some party packs for them. “I want them to not feel destitute or lonely over the holidays. I wish them the best and hoping that at least some are working on turning their lives around.” She says this is her last event for the year as she will

be taking a break until February. Denzel Abrahams, 28, has been on the streets for 14 years and always looks forward to this day. “ To d a y i s l e k k e r , m a n , there’s so baie nice food and small gifts. Only Ouma does this for us and we appreciate it so much. She’s always taking care of us and will be blessed for doing this.” Nicolene Peters, 41, says: “This is my first Christmas away from my family and it’s not going to be the same, but I didn’t know that we, too, can have a nice homecooked meal to enjoy together. “I am grateful to aunty Hilda for thinking of us at her age.”

SINGER and songwriter Jarrad Ricketts along with his wife KimLee have taken up the challenge t o h e l p e d u c a t e a n d s p re a d awareness around signing up as a bone marrow donor and to raise much needed funds for the Patient Assistance Programme. The South African Bone Marrow Registry has launched its “Give A Little Save A Life” online campaign to assist three patients who are awaiting transplants through i t s P a t i e n t A s s i s t a n c e P ro gramme.

Sign-up The couple will be appealing to the public via social media to boost donor sign-ups and to raise much-needed funds for the SABMR’s Patient Assistance Programme. According to the SABMR, the coloured community are the least represented on their registry. For people of colour, the odds of finding a donor match is 1 in 400

Jarrad said he was surprised to learn that coloured people are under-represented on the registry. “It made me realise how much still needs to be done to break the stigma around stem cell donation. Hundreds of South African patients die every year from blood-related diseases, in many instances related to a shortage of mixed ethnicities, black, coloured and Indian donors.

OF THE DAY WAT sê JY?

■ Free education? Free healthcare? More jobs? With all the foreigners invading the countr y? Dream on folks! SA is dying! Bra Ike. ■ Clarence Ford sounds very happy and full of spirit when on air, but in the meantime, there is a lot happening behind the curtains. I am very proud of him. Bullying must stop especially when it comes to adults. Clarence Ford, I salute you and will miss you dearly on air. Ore vannie Plain. ■ Duffy, I think you should change your name to doffy. How can you say the president leads from the front?

Cape Town radio is losing a legend. Seems surreal that we will no longer hear Clarrie’s Favourites and that lekker langarm! All the best Mr Ford! Funny, you are looking backwards because the vaccination never worked. Why did he get it? Isn’t a vaccine supposed to cure but not make people sick? How many more jabs and waves still to come? They say another wave in April and then another vaccine is needed. OK, Doffy?

SPORT

■ Spurs played the game of their lives and probably deserve a point that means more to them than it does to the mighty Reds. You’ll Never Walk Alone. LJB.

POLITICS

■ What don’t the Zuma supporters understand? Zuma is NOT above the law. Besides his defiance, he CRIPPLED our country, please understand that. Look at the state of our country! What other president crippled our country? Are you people h a p p y about the tsunami of homeless people

left on our streets? You people just don’t care. And Edward Zuma, stop talking sh!t about Zuma’s health that’s deteriorating. He’s quite fine. Worry about the homeless people whose health is deteriorating, some of them even passed on. And remember, those in the judiciary had studied to become judges so don’t interfere with their work. The judges must NOT be intimidated by these idiots. Leigh. ■ It is no secret that Zuma will appeal everything they throw at him. Only way to stay out of jail. Duffy. ■ After another weekend of horror crashes, our Ministry of Transport has again expressed “condolences” to the bereaved. This is the usual government response. So that’s all right then and calls to bring our speed limits in line with other countries and cut our road carnage in half overnight are of no importance. Richard Benson, Road Safety Action Campaign. ■ So far, our new mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has been impressive. Yes, it’s still early days but I’ve got a real good feeling about him. I didn’t vote DA but I will back and support him in anyway. Joanie.

CLARENCE’S HEART BREAK: RADIO LEGEND QUITS AMID BULLYING ALLEGATIONS

■ I find it funny that this young guy is Clarence’s superior. He probably wasn’t even born when Clarence and DImitri owned the airwaves of Cape Town. One of very few DJ’s who can capture an audience with music and conversation. Go well sir. Ashley Williams. ■ Ashley Williams, my sentiment exactly. Probably a snot nose with a know-it-all mentality. Porcia Myburgh Visser. ■ Office politics is real all over and it’s always the hard working people that get the short end of the stick but I guess that is life. All of the best and yes the bully will always say “I don’t know what I did”. With a little bit of power, you think you are the CEO. But everything must come to an end. You will be blessed wherever you go Clarrie. All the best. Shanaaz Rademeyer. ■ Start your own radio show. You will have tons of followers. Many people have jobs there because of you and Dimitri now they want to take over and kick you out. Fear not, you will soar higher and more doors will open up for you. Janine Swarts. ■ Fear not Clarence, your brand is way bigger than Heart’s and they will be the major losers here. Les Barendse. ■ Les Barendse, he comes a long way, surely going to miss him on a Friday with his beautiful langarm music. Amarantha Beel. ■ Amarantha Beel, agreed. You’re absolutely correct. He’s a legend. Les Barendse. ■ We love you Clarence Ford and wish you all the greatness you deserve... We shall follow you wherever you may go. You are a LEGEND on your own. No need for bullies or haters... Be blessed always. Bernice Leggett. ■ Bevan Tyga Alley, so WTF do we listen to on a Friday from now on? Darryn Peskin. ■ Sunday evenings will just not be the same. Thank you Clarence for keeping all the old and good music alive. You brought so much into our homes... more than you will ever know. All the best. Hopefully we will hear your voice soon. Afrouz

GIRL. 5, SHOT IN THE EYE: VICTIM RECOVERING IN HOSPITAL AFTER STRUCK BY A BULLET INSIDE HER HOME

■ Ai, speedy recovery angel. Benita Spogter. ■ Shooting children is getting worse in those communities. God help. Lwanda April. ■ Will make lots of dua for her. Mariam Mem Jumat. ■ When I read stories like this... I’m so sorry that you had to experience such an unfortunate and unnecessary thing. I’m glad you are doing okay and that things weren’t worse. It’s very upsetting that this happened in the first place. Alistair Haddon. ■ Get well soon. Fawziayah Davids.

RUNAWAY BABY MAMA RETURNS HOME: MOM ‘MIN GESPIN’ ABOUT HER CHILD

■ I would love to read an article on “Runaway and Absent Fathers”. I’m not defending her actions, however, it’s usually the mother/grandmother who has to raise the child. Ayesha Abbass. ■ This story has many mothers commenting here. Like, did you know this is actually none of your business? Y’all over here acting like you know the situation. Good on you for taking responsibility. That was a choice. Not all choices need to be the right one. At the very least make it the responsible one. Did she make a responsible choice for her? Never, according to some keyboard moms who raise children like they raise tastic rice. Basmati will humble you, mother van tastic. Charmian Heathrow Saunders. ■ Charmian Heathrow Saunders, ek se jou, die wereld is lelik hier buite. Mense soos hulle wat f***l gevoel het vir ander nie. Sies, hulle maak my naar. Liezle Lee. ■ No mean comments please... I just want to understand something. There are moms who throw their babies away in fields and bins. This girl, who is clearly not ready for motherhood, left her baby at a hospital. Why is this so different from leaving her baby at a baby “drop off” centre where they are encouraged to leave the babies at a place of safety and with no questions asked? Nobody knows the circum-

stances of the conception or anything else about the girl. When you can be anything in this world, be KIND. Lesa Ann Kline. ■ Lesa Ann Kline, I understand your point. Have you read our fellow females’ comments? Very disgusting and judgemental. It could’ve happened to any of their own daughters who left a baby at the hospital. This girl obviously needs help. Nazeerah Mohamed Moosa. ■ Post natal depression, anxiety, and psychosis is very real. All these judgemental people. So many uneducated and privileged WOMEN degrading this woman after she left her baby at a safe place. Layla Hermans. ■ Wow, she’s defs not ready for motherhood. Dinosh Petersen. ■ Age, circumstance, social media and mental illness maybe afterbirth depression. I see it in a different view. Red Cross Hospital can help the baby. The mom needs counselling! Elvira Abrahams. ■ This is why so many mothers who are suffering do not talk because there is too much judgement. Monique Warwick.

DROP IN DRUNK DRIVING ON CAPE ROADS ■ Then why do I still see lots of people sitting in their cars and drinking or driving and drinking? iT means the traffic officials are not doing their job properly. Ashley Pelton. ■ That’s a lie. They can buy on “skuld” now. And the payment month end isn’t going to stop them. Gail Van Der Speck. ■ Very good news especially for those innocent victims who got hurt or killed by drunk driving. Neville Watson. ■ That’s good news. Now start sorting out the taxis. Bradley Richards Sutton. ■ Most people have gotten used to chilling at home since lockdown. Going out isn’t that important anymore, in my opinion. David Waterbroer.

REK YOUR CHEQUE MIND YOUR MONEY, MIND YOUR BUSINESS WITH MOESHFIEKA BOTHA

PERSONAL FINANCE IT’S the end of 2021 and I am exhausted!

It’s been a rough year, on all fronts – but it’s been especially hard on our pockets.

We have seen petrol prices skyrocket and the cost of goods go through the roof. How ordinary people are expected to survive, is beyond me. I am also so tired of the narrative that tells people to save money, when the reality is that many simply do not have money to save. When you have to choose between spending R15 to buy a bread to feed your family, or saving R15 – then there is no real choice at all. However, we must realise that saving money doesn’t necessarily always mean the literal saving of money in a cupboard or a bank account. We can also save money by cutting costs and changing our lifestyle. Prioritise (Wants and needs) Daily necessities as well as school fees, school uniforms and stationery should be top of mind right now. Everything else is not a priority. n Be honest with yourself and differentiate your wants from your needs. n There is no shame in not being able to afford something. Stop all and any unnecessary spending. Some people get into the mindset of “things are bad, I’ll feel better if I spoil myself and my kids”. This is not a good approach, especially if you are unsure of having an income in the upcoming months. We literally can’t survive on love and fresh air. Bored? Dig out the paperwork Set aside the time to start digging out all your financial contracts and paperwork. n Go through the paperwork and make a note of who you owe what to. n Have a look at what your interest rates for every debt is. If you can afford to, then pay back the most expensive ones (the ones with the higher interest rates) first. n Examine your contracts for credit and life insurance. •Check out how long you still have to be paying on all your accounts.

VALUABLE TOOL: Draw up a budget to manage finances

A practical guide on how to reduce everyday expenses Get a credit report n Every South African consumer is entitled to one free credit report from every credit bureau, once a year. Make the effort to get yours. Draw up a budget n Drawing up a budget may seem boring, but it is a valuable tool in helping you manage your finances. n Don’t keep your budget in your head. It doesn’t work. n Rather write it down on paper, do it on your PC or use one of the many free budgeting apps available. n Sometimes you need your financial situation to stare you

CHANGE: Switch to a car that is lighter on fuel

in the face, so that you can see exactly how much you are spending and possibly cut down if needed. Scale down n Cancel subscriptions to apps you don’t need. n Cancel duplicate insurances, especially those offered as a side product. n Switch to cheaper packages (e.g. DStv) n Check out the terms and conditions and cancellation clauses and penalties applicable. n Get comparative quotes on medical aids, insurance, etc. This could save you quite a bit of money. n A roof over your head is a necessity. Paying rent in an area you can’t afford isn’t. Considering relocating to a cheaper location. n You need transport to get around. But do you really need a big fuel-guzzling car with the price of petrol these days? Consider changing to a vehicle with a lower fuel consumption, especially if you are working from home. Save money on the way you do things n Switch off your geyser during the day.

COSTLY: Food prices have risen If you save R10 a day on electricity this way – that’s R300 a month that can go towards something else n Make food that feeds more people – and where leftovers can be frozen. Soups and bredies (even without meat) go a long way these days. n Medicines are costly. Make your own immune system boosters from natural ingredients. n Check for specials on cellphone data and airtime deals during this time. Do your homework and find cheaper food prices n Sadly, the price of food and staple products have increased

tremendously over the last year. Sometimes by as much as 30% on basic items like rice and sugar. By keeping track of “specials” on various grocery stores, you can save quite a bit of money on your weekly or monthly grocery purchases. We need to stop living beyond our means. If that means acknowledging to ourselves (and others) that we can no longer afford what we previously could – then so be it. There is no shame in that. Stop trying to keep up with the Joneses – they are scaling down too!

AN OBJECTIVE: The Gunk

Pals fight mekaar & a parasite THE Gunk is a game about two friends who run a small scavenging outfit together, and who travel from one space rock to another in search for resources they can harvest and sell. One day they land on a planet that looks dead from a distance, turns out to be unlike any other they’ve set foot on. A slimy parasite — or gunk — covers vast areas and seems to corrupt the otherwise vibrant nature and wildlife. It’s clear that they must fight this gunk to understand what’s happened and to save the dying planet.

Rift But this also creates a rift between them; on one hand, the planet will die if we don’t rid the planet of the gunk. On the other, we’ve got problems of our own and surely this isn’t our fight to begin with. So, who cares… right? Do we have to?

TOP OF THE PILE: Man City

HUMDINGER: Spurs-Liverpool draw had a bit of everything

HELLO everyone… hope you’re getting into the festive spirit despite the circumstances we all find ourselves in! Last Thursday’s 1-1 draw between Chelsea and Everton created the wide consensus that Thomas Tuchel’s side are no longer title contenders.

Bookies slashed their odds from 3/1 to 8/1 overnight and I have to agree. In fact, those of you who read (or listen) to my comments will know that I wrote us off a while ago… even before the 1-1 draw against Manchester United. Despite good results on paper, Chelsea just haven’t been playing well. It’s not 100 percent clear what exactly has gone wrong, but of course the leading issue is defending. Before the United game about a month ago, remarkably, Chelsea had only conceded four goals for the first quarter of the season, in the last few games that has risen to 12. The leaking has coincided with the long-term injury of two absolutely crucial players. Leftback Ben Chilwell, who provided great balance in defence, especially with the dynamic power of Reece James on the right, has been replaced by Marcus Alonso and he simply ain’t a good defender. But more importantly, the loss of N’Golo Kante has been devastating. His role of protecting the backline is arguably unmatched in world football.

Prowess It’s easy to see why he’s often described as “two players in one”. No team should have to rely on a single player, but there’s absolutely no doubt, without him the Blues lack that defensive prowess. Saying that, with the return of key injured players and half a season to go, anything can happen. There are only six points separating the top three. Personally, I’d be more than happy with a top-four finish. Besides on-the-field matters, there’s also the Covid curveball. It’s going mental in England, with 100 000 infections a day and every team in the league having to manage the temporary loss of players and staff. If it continues, who knows? PerMain attraction haps we’ll see some kind of postponement? The huge issue is next year’s World Cup in Qatar. uninspiring game, which was the polar opposite to Tottenham and Liverpool’s 2-2 draw. Really enjoyed it. As they say, “it had a bit of everything”, which included some proper dodgy officiating. However, it was a full-throttle Prem battle, with Spurs at last looking like they were playing with a bit of heart. On the balance of play, or should I say the gilt-edged chances created, Antonio Conte will be disappointed his team didn’t take all three points! All of a sudden there they are, crept up like a red-cloaked thief into the top four! You have to give respect where it’s due. They’ve improved so much and are really clicking as a team. I still maintain they are a way off a title challenge, but to all you Gooners out there, enjoy the festivities! On that note, we are about to enter three games each in the space of a week, provided Covid doesn’t screw it all up. Be safe people, do the right thing and get vaccinated.

JURGEN Klopp was left fuming at the number of decisions that went against Liverpool in Sunday’s dramatic 2-2 Premier League draw at Tottenham.

That wasn’t all, as the German was shown a yellow card by referee Paul Tierney after protesting the decision to wave away a penalty shout on Diogo Jota. Wow. “That’s obviously two wrong decisions of him, I would say, and one right – all three against us.”

Conte: Salah handball was clear REFEREE Paul Tierney is not getting a lot of love after his performance in Tottenham’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Sunday. With Jurgen Klopp hitting out at some calls, Spurs boss Antonio Conte has his bedenkinge too. The Italian is still in disbelief that Liverpool’s second goal was allowed to stand after a “clear handball” by Mo Salah in the build.

By VOICE SPORTS TEAM A deflected cross hit the Reds’ Egyptian ace on the hand as he tried to head it before Hugo Lloris palmed the ball out, only for Trent Alexander-Arnold to drill the ball back towards goal and Andy Robertson to put the visitors 2-1 up.

Conte says: “My staff said to me the second [Liverpool] goal was a clear handball. Clear, a clear handball. “It was incredible to give the second goal and not to disallow.” VAR upheld the goal following a rule change at the start of the season allowing the finish to stand in case of an accidental handball before another player scoring.

AUSTRALIA klapped England by 275 runs in the day-night second Ashes Test at the Adelaide Oval yesterday to go 2-0 up in the fivematch Ashes series. Chasing a daunting victory target of 468, England were all out for 192 in the final session of the pink-ball contest. Chris Woakes’ 44 was the highest individual score in England’s swak second-innings batting display, while Jos Buttler resisted for a while with a dogged 26 off 207 balls. Stand-in Australia captain Steve Smith says: “They showed some great resilience today. “Jos played a really good innings, he faced over 200 balls. “We were trying to stay as calm as we could out in the middle and just thought, a couple of good balls and a couple of wickets and we’ll keep going.” Seamer Jhye Richardson was the pick of the Australian bowlers, claiming 5-42. Australia’s South African-born ace Marnus Labuschagne was named Man of the Match for his 103, the only century hit by a player from either side in the match. Australia were without regular captain Pat Cummins, who missed out for being a close contact of a positive Covid-19 case, and injured paceman Josh Hazlewood. England captain Joe Root says: “We made mistakes throughout the game that we made last week, whether it be no-balls, missed chances. “We just have to be better. We have to learn those lessons very quickly over the next week.” The third Test begins in Melbourne on Sunday.

TUCHEL RISKED KANTE

Record-breaking City ‘can do better’

THOMAS Tuchel admits that he ignored doctor’s advice on N’Golo Kante’s playing time in their goalless Premier League draw with Wolves on Sunday. With seven players missing because of Covid-19, Chelsea desperately wanted the match to be postponed. But their request het op dowe ore geval.

PEP Guardiola’s Manchester City team of 2021 has geen gelyke nie in Premier League history. As much was confirmed on Sunday when they smashed Newcastle 4-0 for their 34th league victory of the year to eclipse a record set by Liverpool in 1982 for the most wins in a calendar year. Scoring a hele 106 goals in 2021 – also a record – Guardiola still believes his team can improve. Firing a warning to their opponents, logleading coach Guardiola says of the win over Newcastle: “Good result. Exceptional, in a not very good performance at all, especially the first half. “We were lucky for the goal we scored at the beginning of the game. The second goal was a brilliant action from Joao [Cancelo], but the way we played in the first half was one of the poorest of the season. “The first half was a dangerous position. The second half was much, much better. “During the season this can happen. It’s normal. You can’t be brilliant all the time. “We more than deserved the victory but we know we can do better and better.”

Consequence The consequence was that Tuchel was forced to play Kante, who had just returned from a knee injury, for the hele 90 minutes instead of the 45 he was advised to by the medical team. Tuchel explains: “We had a strong recommendation [for him] to play 45 [min-

CRICKET South Africa’s director Graeme Smith and Proteas head coach Mark Boucher will continue in their roles in the upcoming series against India. But they will face formal inquiries in the new year into the findings of CSA’s Social Justice and Nation Building (SJN) report after both were accused of prejudice and acting in a discriminatory manner. After meeting on the weekend to discuss the findings, CSA chairperson Lawson Naidoo says: “CSA respects the SJN process and we are engaging with the report in detail and holistically.

Recommendation “We have taken careful cognisance of the recommendation of the Ombudsman, that in appropriate cases, a further process should be instituted to test the evidence and submissions made, and we have decided that this is indeed the appropriate route to follow.” “We hope this will give implicated parties a fair opportunity to be heard so that finality can be achieved, and any final findings can then be acted on.” Boucher was strongly criticised by the Office of the Transformation Ombudsman, which conducted the SJN hearings, for trying to excuse or give reasons for calling his for-

CSA CALLS OFF 2022 MSL CRICKET South Africa yesterday confirmed that the Mzansi Super League (MSL) scheduled for February 2022 has been called off because of Covid-19 issues. A statement released reads: “[The] Covid-19 environment has made it difficult to maintain the brand proposition of being the premium international T20 tournament, due to increased travel restrictions as imposed by many nations on South Africa since the discovery of Omicron variant of the virus… “Restrictions such as stricter travel possibilities, the Bio-Secure Environment frustrations, fear of the new variant, and the weak Rand/ US Dollar exchange rate are some of the main reasons why CSA has taken the decision to call off the 2022 MSL.”

By VOICE SPORTS TEAM mer teammate Paul Adams, ‘brown s***,’ as part of a team song in the late 1990s. Ombudsman Adv. Dumisa Ntsebeza said in Boucher’s case it appeared that if he had undergone diversity and transformation training, that he was “apathetic towards diversity and transformation”. Smith’s case involved his not wanting to work with CSA’s former CEO, Thabang Moroe, who was subsequently dismissed based on the findings of a forensic audit. The SJN found that Smith’s behaviour, “evinces his racial bias against black leadership at CSA”. Smith, through his lawyer, David Becker, later slammed that assertion, stating that the fact that he’d worked under current acting CEO, Pholetsi Moseki and under other black officials on the board and Members Council was proof that he wasn’t biased. T h e inquiries into the pair’s conduct, will be conducted by independent, legal professionals and will be done in the new year.

CSA duo to face inquiry in 2022 Uefa kick Tottenham out of Europe By VOICE SPORTS TEAM TOTTENHAM were booted out of the Europa Conference League yesterday after Uefa ruled they forfeited their final group-stage match against Rennes. The December 9 match was called off after Spurs reported 13 positive Covid-9 cases, with the north Londoners missing their next two Premier League matches before playing to a 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Sunday. With Uefa and the two clubs unable to find an alternative date for the match, the European football body decided to refer the matter to its disciplinary body. And Uefa’s Appeals Body released a statement with their decision, saying: “To declare the 2021/22 Uefa Europa Conference League group stage match ... as forfeited by Tottenham Hotspur FC, who is therefore deemed to have lost the match 0-3.” Meanwhile, reports in the UK claim that Prem clubs have decided to reject a Covid-19 “firebreak” and continue the schedule, with clubs set to use U23 players in the absence of first-team stars.

YOUNG GUN: Ace Gabriel Martinelli

Gunners targeting cup semi By VOICE SPORTS TEAM ARSENAL golden boy Gabriel Martinelli is backing himself and his young teammates to fire the Gunners into the League Cup semifinals tonight. With four goals in his last six games, the 20-year-old Brazilian striker is keen to keep that run going when Sunderland visit the Emirates Stadium for a 9.45pm kickoff. His double in Saturday’s 4-1 win over Leeds made him the youngest player to score twice in a Premier League game for Arsenal since Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in February 2014. And Martinelli reckons there is more to come from him and young guns Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe and Martin Odegaard up front. He warns: “As I always say we have a [young] team, but a very strong team. “We are together as a team.” With Arsenal looking to make it all the way to the final for the first time since losing the 2018 decider to Manchester City, Sunderland striker Ross Stewart is out to krap om the Gunners’ planne. Boosted by their underdogs tag, he says: “We’ll go there as huge underdogs. It’s a bit of a free hit. But we’ll got there looking for a win.”

SA GETS URC BEKSKOOT SOUTH Africa’s United Rugby Championship (URC) teams received an extended holiday from tournament organisers yesterday. With Rounds Six and Seven, which would have seen SA teams host overseas opposition for the first time in the competition, postponed because of Covid, the Stormers, Bulls, Lions and Sharks had to play local derbies earlier this month.
