Nautical News Adventuress Cup Inaugural Race Still Planned for Late September Despite ongoing concerns about the continuing rise of COVID-19 worldwide, Sound Experience still plans to launch its inaugural Adventuress Cup Race this year on September 20. Planners say “scores of sailboats” are expected to gather in Seattle’s Shilshole Bay to celebrate the health of the marine environment and raise funds for the nonprofit Sound Experience. Dubbed a “A Race for the Salish Sea,” the Adventuress Cup aims to raise funds and awareness of Sound Experience’s overnight programs in maritime skills, environmental stewardship, resilience, and connections to each other and the natural world. Sound Experience, which owns and operates the iconic tall ship Adventuress, offers programs aboard the historic vessel, reaching more than a thousand children yearly from the state’s schools, community partners, and the general public. In a nod to coronavirus concerns, race planners said participants are being invited to join the festivities on the water or virtually. Each participant can be a part of a “real or virtual crew” for every boat. Crew members are encouraged to participate in peer-to-peer fundraising and educational pre-race challenges to improve their boat’s handicap.

18 NORTHWEST YACHTING < AUGUST 2020

“During a year in which COVID-19 has changed all of our paradigms, we are creating an event with both real and virtual components that will be exciting and meaningful to all participants – those who sail in person and those who participate from miles away,” said Rusty Lhamon, a board member of Sound Experience and race chair. The September 20 event will replace the organization’s fall gala that in recent years raised more than $150,000 for youth education aboard Adventuress, including the popular “Girls at the Helm” program. “At Sound Experience, we believe that we are all shipmates,” said it executive director, Catherine Collins. “The one thing we hear most from kids at the end of a program is ‘I would never have been friends with [her/him/them] if we hadn’t sailed together.’” All race activities will follow safety guidelines and procedures from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Washington State Department of Health and will not include land-based events. To learn more about the race and to sign up for pre-registration information, visit Soundexp.org/AdventuressCup.

Ocean Voyages Institute Sets Record With Largest Sea Cleanup in History A total of 103 tons of plastic was removed from the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch” in June as a result of the latest ocean cleanup efforts by the Ocean Voyages Institute. Ocean Voyages’ marine plastic recovery vessel, the S/V Kwai, spent 48 days in the waters off the coast of Hawaii skimming pieces of fishing nets and consumer plastics from the Pacific Ocean and bringing them back to Honolulu. The collected detritus was found within the garbage gyre, officially known as the North Pacific Subtropical Convergence Zone, that has circled the area for decades. The impressive haul more than doubled the institute’s previous cleanup results of 48 tons from two expeditions that took place last year. “I am so proud of our hard-working crew,” said Mary Crowley, founder and executive director of Ocean Voyages. “We exceeded our goal of capturing 100 tons of toxic consumer plastics and derelict ‘ghost’ nets.” Crowley added that “The oceans can’t wait for these nets and debris to break down into microplastics, which impair the ocean’s ability to store carbon and toxify the fragile ocean food web.” Known unofficially as the “Ghost Net Buster,” Crowley helped develop effective methods to remove significant amounts of plastics from oceans, based on global positioning satellite (GPS) technology. Since 2018, Ocean Voyages are proving Crowley’s theory that one GBS tracking can lead to the discovery of many other nets that can trap a high density of plastic debris within a 15-mile radius. “There is no cure-all solution to ocean clean-up,” said Locky MacLean, a former director at Sea Shepherd and a campaigner in marine conservation. “It is the long days at sea, with dedicated crew scanning the horizon, grappling nets, and retrieving huge amounts of trash that makes it happen.”

The Pacific Gyre, located halfway between Hawaii and California, is considered the largest area, with the most plastic, of the five major open-ocean plastic accumulation regions in the world. “We are utilizing proven nautical equipment to effectively clean up the oceans while innovating with new technologies,” Crowley said. “Ocean Voyages Institute has been a leader in researching and accomplishing ocean clean-up for over a decade.” Ocean Voyages will continue unloading the record-breaking haul of ocean plastic debris while docked at Honolulu’s Pier 29, thanks to the support of marine transportation company, Matson. “In keeping with our commitment to environmental stewardship, Matson has been searching for a way to get involved in cleaning up the Pacific Gyre,” said Matt Cox, Matson’s chairman and CEO. “We’ve been impressed with the groundbreaking efforts of Ocean Voyages Institute and the progress they’ve made.” The voyage of the S/V Kwai started from the Hawaiian port of Hilo on May 4. After a three-week, self-imposed quarantine period to ensure the health of crew members under COVID-19 pandemic rules, the multinational crew collected marine plastic pollution with the help of GPS satellite trackers, searching for beacons that were placed on nets by volunteer yachts and ships. By combining drone technology with mast lookouts, the ship’s crew honed in on the debris, collected the litter and place it in industrial bags in the ship’s cargo hold for recycling at the end of the voyage. Ocean Voyages is planning a second summer voyage led by Captain Brad Ives for the S/V Kwai to continue clean-up of the gyre. The length of a second summer leg will be determined by the amount of additional donations, the institute said.

Nautical News Former Astronaut is First to See Space and Reach the Ocean’s Deepest Point Former U.S. astronaut Kathryn Sullivan became famous in 1984 as the first American woman to walk in space. In June, she made an even more historic first by traveling in the other direction – exploring the deepest spot in the ocean: Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench. Located nearly seven miles beneath the surface of the Pacific Ocean, off the southeast coast of Guam, Challenger Deep was first reached in 1960 by two explorers, Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh, using a specially designed submersible called the Trieste. Since then, only six other people had matched that feat, all of whom were men, including film director James Cameron. Sullivan, who is a trained geologist as well as a three-time Space Shuttle astronaut, journeyed into the depths in a two-person submersible with former naval officer Victor Vescovo on

June 14. After descending more than 35,800 feet, they hit bottom, where pressures reached 16,000 pounds per square inch. The round trip to Challenger Deep and back, organized by EYOS Expeditions, took four to five hours to complete, with temperatures inside the craft dropping to just 22˚F. The 68-year-old Sullivan, now the first person of any gender to reach both low-earth orbit and the world’s deepest trench, told the BBC that she hopes her adventures inspire more women to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers. “In so many fields where science and technology are at the core of what you’re doing, it’s completely creative,” she said. “I think exploration can take many forms – it doesn’t have to be venturing off physically to the middle of the Pacific Ocean or to the earth orbit. There are lots of dimensions to exploring.”

New Washington Sea Grant Fellowships to Broaden Diversity in Marine Research The Washington Sea Grant (WSG) program, offered by the University of Washington, has established two new programs – Keystone Fellowship and Undergraduate Science Communications Fellowships – with the goal of reaching a broader and more diverse group of students and recent graduates into the field of marine research. Deborah Purce, a fellowship and research specialist for WSG, said in WSG’s Sea Star newsletter that the new fellowships will “provide students and recent graduates with opportunities to gain real-world experience in marine research and policy at state, national and international levels. In a competitive job market, this real-time experience gives many fellows a jumpstart to their careers.” As part of a 10-year roadmap to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), WSG found that opportunities for undergraduates and more diverse groups were needed. “Over the past two years, WSG has begun to think comprehensively about equity and inclusion and has made it a priority to broaden participation in our valuable and highly regarded fellowship programs,” Purce added. The new WSG Keystone Fellowship will match fellows with host organizations, with a special emphasis on recruiting, retaining and engaging people who represent the social diversity of coastal communities that WSG works within. Adrienne Hampton, the inaugural Keystone Fellow, told Sea Star that “the opportunity is creating access into the marine science

and policy landscape where significant disparities in the representation, content, and processes for implementing DEI exist.” The fellowship paired Hampton with the Seattle Aquarium, where she applies environmental justice to inform local and national policy. In an effort to extend marine science opportunities to undergraduates, WSG also introduced the new Undergraduate Science Communications Fellowship last year. This program allows undergraduates to build a writing portfolio and apply their science writing skills beyond academia. “We noticed that undergraduates were competing against graduate students for the same fellowship slots, creating an uneven playing field,” said MaryAnn Wagner, WSG assistant director for communications. Because paid internships or fellowship opportunities for undergraduates are very limited, Wagner said the undergraduate fellowship allows students to earn experience that will give them a head start when applying for jobs once they graduate. To further expand the science writing opportunities for graduates, the UW College of the Environment recently partnered with WSG to create their own Science Communications Fellowship program, modeled after WSG’s program. In the first round, they accepted four fellows.

Dear Pups of ‘Dog Watch’ in Northwest Yachting, This ‘bark’ is given to fetch your owners, and draw attention to your email to find out who on earth would send email to pups?! Well, I’m writing because in reviewing the ‘staff’’ assignments on your masthead, I couldn’t find who I should ask if my subscription has expired or not. My guess is that it has, as the last issue I received was back in May. If this is the case, please ask your owners to re-establish a new subscription for me because I really miss receiving my copy of Northwest Yachting. Please pass on my credit card information, and don’t forget to ask for a treat to be recognized for accomplishing the task. Let your masters know that postal mailing is sufficient; no need for you to deliver with a wagging tail. Good boys and girls,

Al Johnson Ketchikan, Alaska

Dear Al, This is Pearl and Flora, and we want to thank you for the message! Flora and I could not stop laughing. We attempt to answer all emails in a timely manner, however, our employer has us on lockdown in our basement on a hamster wheel to keep our email server up and running. Can you believe this nonsense? Flora and I are so excited to finally receive fan mail, that we’d like to offer you a free one-year subscription to Northwest Yachting! If you will please send us your mailing address, Flora and I will be sure that you receive your mags each month, complements of USPS. Thank you again for your message, and be sure to keep an eye out for our October issue! This is all we can say for now because our mothers had us sign an NDA! You won’t be disappointed! Woof Woof,

Miss Pearl and Fluffy Flora

2013 40’ Hunter-Marlow

This Seattle-based fiberglass monohull is the ideal sailboat for anyone, from novice day-sailors to serious cruisers. Built in 2013, the H40, named “Too Cool Runnings,” was launched to celebrate Hunter’s 40 years in business. Fittingly, the hand-crafted interior is as functional as it is beautiful, with two double berths, two cabins and two heads. The nonskid deck surface provides security for young ones, as well. Immaculately maintained by her original owners, this H40 has upgraded mattresses, “ultra-leather” upholstery, a convertible dinette and filler cushions for the forward cabin, with 6 feet, 6 inches of interior headroom. The forward cabin has a deck hatch, electrical outlets for both AC and DC power and a hanging locker. The aft cabin is a centerline berth with a double bed that has an innerspring mattress. The salon features accordion shades, LED cabin lighting and a forward-facing chart table. For musical interludes, the salon is also equipped with a Sony CDX GT5 stereo, plus Sirius auxiliary stereo, with Bose speakers. For rainy days, there is also a 24” flat-screen TV with CD and DVD players. The galley includes Corian countertops, a front-loading refrigerator and freezer, a dish rack cabinet, a microwave oven, and double stainless-steel sinks with a cutting board. On-board chefs also have a two-burner gimbaled propane stove with an oven, and a built-in waste bin. The sails are controlled by a mainsheet purchase system and an anodized-aluminum B&R rig. The rig has a fractional sail plan and a Selden in-mast furling system, with a 110% furling jib and an acrylic sun cover. A cockpit traveler arch, made of stainless steel, carries the mainsheet over the helm. At the helm itself, the electronics array includes a Raymarine C125 color chart plotter and R418HD radar, as well as a Raymarine i70 instrumentation, with a knot meter and a wind machine. Other equipment includes an SPX-10 autopilot and an AIS 650 transponder. When the winds aren’t blowing, of course, the upgraded, 54-horsepower Yanmar 4JH5E diesel inboard engine can power the H40 home. Other power elements include a 120-amp upgraded alternator, a Magnum 2,000-watt inverter with a 100-amp charger, an automatic electric bilge pump, and even a small, deck-mounted solar panel. At the stern, bathers can enjoy a swim platform with a telescoping ladder and relax at the stern rail seats that are equipped with drink holders. There’s even an AB inflatable dinghy with 5-horsepower outboard engine. The H40 also has all U.S. Coast Guard safety equipment, including an automatic engine room fire-extinguishing system, as well as carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. 2000 42’ Grand Banks Heritage Europa For several decades, yacht builder Grand Banks made a name for itself by producing more than 1,500 of its 42-foot Europa yacht design series. Now considered a “retro-style” classic, the Europa combines speed, elegance, and simplicity in a one beautiful package. Connecticut-based broker Essex Yacht Sales, which recently sold the last 42-footer Grand Banks built, now offers this historic Europa built in 2000. Named Medicine Man, this Europa notably boasts a trawler mast and boom, providing a convenient space for slinging a dinghy that can be raised or lowered with an electric winch. The Europa includes two staterooms, plus a covered aft deck adjacent to the salon through two sliding teak doors. The salon features leather sofas, custom-upgraded LED lighting, a fully integrated sound system, and a classic hi-low table that can be extended for dining. There is also a full galley on the port side with a microwave oven, propane stove, and two refrigerators. The boat also includes full heat and air-conditioning throughout and is powered by a 9kW generator. The foredeck also features a high bulwark and rail that’s finished in varnished teak, making the vessel safe for children and pets who come aboard. The upper and lower helms each have a complete instrumentation suite, including E120 plotter GPS radar, a depth sounder, and autopilot. With a 39,000-pound displacement and two large 435-horsepower CATs, Medicine Man can take you cruising with comfort. Although it can achieve an impressive 21 knots at full speed, this Europa is also surprisingly fuel-efficient, averaging 1 gallon per nautical mile at cruising speed via her 3208TA engines, which only have only seen 1,200 hours of light use. A recently added canvas Bimini top provides shade on summer days. Unique to the Europa design, the access forward on both sides is covered with a deck overhang, providing extra shade in the salon area. This well-maintained craft is tastefully appointed and has a complete set of service records. It’s a perfect boat for both cruising and liveaboard use. Evoy Outboards to Go Electric As part of the industry’s overall effort to reduce marine emissions, Norway-based Evoy will soon release a 100% electric engine for high-speed boats. Having already provided 800-horsepower electric propulsion technology for inboard systems in 2018, Evoy said it is working on the next step: the most powerful battery-powered outboard system in the world. Evoy said it has developed a prototype outboard designed especially for polar cruise enthusiasts that will premiere later this year as the Evoy Pro. Currently teaming up with Hurtigruten and Frydenbø Marine, Evoy expects the prototype to match the performance of a 150-horsepower gasoline engine. Testing of the Evoy Pro, currently rated at between 90 and 150 kilowatts, is expected to continue into the fall season and when Evoy expects to provide final performance and range figures. The company also said it will begin offering modular battery packs that can be installed in series or parallel configuration. Expect more shocking developments to be released soon. Visit evoy.no/outboard for more information.

Digital Delivery

The boating industry is not an industry that can be kept down, even in the face of a pandemic, and this month’s featured podcast is incredible evidence of that. The Maritime Moment podcast is a brand-new show that covers how boaters are handling COVID-19, and how those who have businesses in the marine industry are adjusting operations in light of the pandemic. With two episodes in the bag, the show is hosted by an impressive team of boating industry experts that include Lisa Overing, Art Hill, and Julianne Raines. Overing’s work has been published in over 60 different boating publications; Hill is a marketing strategist with clients that include McDonald’s and Hertz; and Raines is an art director and graphic designer with Megayacht Media. So far, the show has featured interviews with maritime lawyers and shipyard managers, with topics that include how the Monaco Boat Show is adjusting to COVID-19, and how the iconic Derecktor Shipyard is staying open. Check out maritimemoment.com for more.

There is always something that needs to be fixed, replaced, refilled, updated, swapped out, or restocked on a boat. And one hundred miles from home is not the place you want to be when you’ve realize you’ve forgotten something vital. The Boating Suite app is a digital logbook that provides a space for boat owners to track their boat’s maintenance needs, fuel use, expenses, trips, engine specs, to-do lists, and supplies. The app’s seven modules track different aspects of your boat, but integrate them all in one accessible hub for quick reference. If you need a convenient place to keep track of all your boat’s needs, visit the Apple app store and download the Boating Suite app for $4.99. While the summer fishing season might be disrupted this year, it’s still a great time to check out some new fishing gear and have a few new toys ready this fall. This month we’d like to give a shout-out to Fishermen’s Pond, a website with fishing content and product reviews for all types of fishing gear, ranging from fish finders to kayaks, and everything in between. Operated by lifelong fishing enthusiast Donnell Henderson, the site is a nice read for any angler thinking of upgrading their gear,

and would like the opinion of a seasoned fisherman on what to look out for when picking up a new rod, reel, or any other piece of fishing equipment. Visit fishermenspond.com and check out what they have to offer. With many large gatherings being cancelled, it may be a while before you attend a boat show in person again. However, some boat show organizers and boat brokers themselves are organizing virtual boat shows that enable curious customers to experience the next best thing to stepping foot on a boat in person. Many brokers are now offering full 360° virtual tours of many of their boats through virtual boat shows. These tours allow you to control the direction of the camera and “walk” through nearly the entire boat, getting a sense of the layout, cabin sizes, interior lighting, pilot house, etc. Another type of virtual tour, offered by Seattle Yachts for example, involves contacting a broker and requesting that you be guided through the boat using a camera and an online meeting app such as Zoom or Skype. This style of tour has the benefit of a live broker who can answer your questions right on the spot. I will be bringing you more information on virtual boat shows in the coming months, so you can become more familiar with this growing form of boat retail. H A column by Melissa Gervais

Boating with Missy

Popsicles and Lifejackets The outstation that I usually visit in my boat is open, but due to COVID, is operating under winter rules for the unforeseeable future. This means no amenities. There is water on the dock, but you have to supply the hose. Also, the boats must tie-up in a checkerboard fashion, so no one is docked side by side. It’s basically anchoring at a dock with access to the beach for walks. I’m just so grateful to be back on the water that I’ll take what I can, instead of complaining. Three weeks ago, I visited the outstation. There are four fingers there, and each one already had two boats docked. I headed for the finger with the most open space and tied up closest to the shore so I could walk the dog. No one came over to grab my lines, but the boats around me were of that ilk. Some always help, and some just never have. Later that afternoon, I noticed the couple who were at the end of the dock walking towards my boat. Surprisingly, they actually transitioned from the side I was moored on to the far opposite side to “go around” my boat. Odd. They didn’t say hello, or even try to make eye contact. A boat was pulling in at the same time, so I didn’t think much of it and went over to help. The woman on board waited until she had my attention and said, “Please, don’t touch my lines.” Fair enough. When the next boat came in, I went over to offer assistance, but this time I asked, “Would you like help with your lines?” A friendly face replied, “Of course, Missy! Why would you ask?” I could see that our new boating reality was going to take some figuring out. Later that day, there was a social distance docktail hour, and everyone was six feet apart, and there was no sharing of snacks or beverages. It was really lovely to see everyone as I have really missed this interaction. It soon became clear that some in the group had been watching a lot of television lately and had some pretty strong opinions! I quickly learned that some boaters felt that dogs should not be allowed at the outstation and that the presence of

44 NORTHWEST YACHTING < AUGUST 2020

animals made them very uncomfortable. Another couple felt that it should be members only and that children and grandchildren should not be allowed. It was becoming apparent that some people, who I had known for years, were starting to show their true colors. I headed back to my boat as another boat was pulling in, and was asked again not to touch the lines or the boat. As the couple at the end of the dock walked passed this new boat, the gentleman physically moved his wife to the opposite side of the dock. It was all just too much. I fired up the engines and moved my boat two docks over. There were three boats on the new dock, and they all came to help with my lines. The new members introduced themselves immediately and wished they could shake hands. They even asked to meet my dog, Jonathan, and said how much they loved dogs. Everyone continued to social distance, but my new neighbors were friendly and wanted to know how long I’d been a member of the outstation, and if I knew where the best crabbing and prawning could be found. We knew people in common, and I had a fabulous weekend getting to know some new “old” friends. The positive energy was palpable. Slowly, more and more boats showed up. Friends I haven’t seen since last summer appeared on the dock with familiar smiles and stories to tell. The new normal was starting to feel normal once again. At one point, I was reading on my back deck and stopped to take it all in. I looked up to see my friend’s daughter, Erin, walking down the dock with a popsicle and a lifejacket. She was heading off for a dinghy ride with her Dad, and it reminded me; this is what it’s all about. Missy grew up boating with her family in the Gulf Islands. She works for a yacht services company based in Vancouver, B.C. and boats most weekends from April to October. A self-proclaimed weekend warrior, she enjoys blogging about everything cool for women who boat at missygoesboating.com.

H A column by Peter Scchrappen

On Watch A quick Google search of the term “tall poppy syndrome” will result in a tidy definition that describes the behavior as a “perceived tendency to discredit or disparage those who have achieved notable wealth or prominence in public life.” It’s a common mindset in Australia, New Zealand, and Netherlands where high achievers in an office are often penalized. Show off too much to one’s boss and risk getting cut down like a tall poppy in a field. I share this information because as I read how well the boating industry is doing, I get nervous that the wrong lawmaker will jump to conclusions that our $121 billion national industry or closer to home, the $7 billion boating economy in Washington, will buoy legislators wish lists and budgets moving forward. If you have seen the news, then you know that at the state level, there is a projected $8.8 billion loss in state revenues over the next three years. To put this into eye-popping number in context, the state worked through a $9 billion deficit from 2009-2011. Not only is this problematic for boating projects (not too long ago, the Boating Facilities Program was raided by elected officials to shore up non-boating overspending), but also legislators are going to look to boating (as a tall poppy) to increase taxes for non-boating programs. Boaters have proven that they do not fear taxes. As of last count, boaters pay $80 million in taxes and fees, but receive only $64 million in services. As the late Senator Andy Hill liked to say, “For a state without an income tax, supporting a thriving boating economy is the next best thing (as a way to redistribute wealth).”

While on a recent boating vacation, I observed that people felt safe and relaxed on the water. Farmers markets were open though eerily quiet, but I noticed the marinas were chock-full. On the water, I could relax and enjoy the simple things of life, such as eating fajitas that included shrimp caught from Pleasant Harbor earlier in the season. As I sat with my feet up at the marina at the foot of Langley, Washington, I could see why National Marine Manufacturers Association new president, Frank Hugelmeyer has this to say about boating: “Recreational boating is well positioned to play a positive role in the health and well-being of healing our country.” Boating as the antidote to COVID-19 sounds just about right. Initial sales reports from local dealers would seem to bolster that assertion. Both in Washington and around the country, dealers are reporting some of the busiest seasons yet with some even setting records.

Time will tell what ideas matriculate from the embryonic concept phase to a bill to a hearing to law. No one knows how COVID-19 will shake out, but there is sure to be definite winners and losers in the economy. Even with a winner (hopefully, boating is a winner), the overall economy will face a drag from shaky consumer confidence and unemployment. With more people working and staying at home because of the pandemic, they are driving less, and strangely, this will also affect the state’s boating funds. Boating now receives 1% of fuel taxes in Washington, which are then shifted to the Boating Facilities Program and granted out to local communities around the state for new ramps, bathrooms, and other boating-related projects. There’s good news for boating out there, too. When it comes to vacations, 54 percent of those surveyed in the U.S. said that feeling safe is the most important factor when booking their next vacation. It was interesting to see that relaxation came in second as a driving factor with 38 percent of the survey’s respondents.

Not only did my vacation include plenty of time for eating, it also gave me time to finally read The Boys in the Boat. Talk about a page-turner. I was especially drawn to this concept from the star of the book, Joe Rantz. When working with draft horses, he learned quickly that two draft horses working together can produce more than two horses working individually. If that’s not the perfect reminder for what is needed now as a watchdog of our government, then nothing is. Alone, we each can only do so much. Coming together as boaters, anglers, and boating businesses will ensure that this upcoming budget deficit is not made up on the back of the boating community.

Moving forward and given the current projections of the virus, it would not surprise me to see a tightening down of restrictions. Given that boating and fishing were two activities not encouraged by our state government, you can bet that boating interests will be remain sensitive to the gravity of the pandemic, while speaking up for boating as one activity that is all about social distancing. It was just a few months ago that State Parks and Recreation Commission closed marine parks and who’s to say those restrictions won’t happen again.

Tight Lines

The Fish are Coming! Before diving into a buffet of fishing options during the month of August, close your eyes and imagine thousands of Chinook and coho who have or are now crossing the Canadian border and beelining into our state waters! For more than a month, we’ve witnessed the front end of this silvery salmon train making its way south, and just like many others, I’ll be part of a welcoming party of boats stretching from the coast clear into southern Puget Sound. Lucky for us, the pandemic led to a dramatic decline in fishing pressure off British Columbia and Alaska, allowing more salmon to escape and make their way south. Are you ready? Hopefully so, because in a flash we’ve already eclipsed the midway point of summer, and a lack of sleep, the “must-do” list of chores, or family vacations shouldn’t hold you back from getting out on the water. In June, my “rinse, repeat” fishing journeys began when the early summer chinook run ramped up in southern Puget Sound and ravenous coho were on the “bite” in central Puget Sound. By mid-July, the hatchery king fishery took off in Strait of Juan de Fuca, and northern, central and south-central Puget Sound. This kind of success and pure fishing fun reminds me why I enjoy being on a boat chasing migratory salmon from the Strait into Puget Sound and off the coast during this short window of opportunity. Some of my favorite spots are Sekiu to Port Angeles, Port Townsend, Point No Point, Possession Bar, and Kingston to Gig Harbor. And we can’t forget a possible brief opportunity for kings in Elliott Bay on July 31-Aug. 3 – dates are contingent on in-season test fishing – right in front of the Great Wheel and Space Needle! The ocean off Neah Bay, La Push, Westport, and Ilwaco were giving up a fair share of kings and hatchery coho. Since these are quota driven, look for updates on the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (WDFW) website. Note: All facilities on the Makah and Quileute reservations have been closed since early summer, so check before heading to those areas, although fishing is open off both ports. This month marks a time to also point your bow toward Buoy 10 at Lower Columbia mouth and Willapa Bay. While the Columbia Chinook and coho runs aren’t robust compared to recent years, it should offer some glory moments.

Lastly, for those who’d like a close-to-home fun opportunity, you need to look no further than Lake Washington for yellow perch! Yellow perch don’t get the respect like our beloved salmon, but I will often take kids and first-time anglers to my favorite spots right in the backyard of the Emerald City for these delicious tasting fish. The cool thing about this fishery is that you can easily catch them just about anywhere in Lake Washington, which stretches more than 20 miles north to south and covers a massive 22,000 acres. This is peak time right now as the water temperatures rise, making them very active all-day long. The yellow perch population is prolific and they’re easy to locate and catch. Look for fish schools in shallow water (15 to 35 feet) and close to shore. Target shaded locations just outside the cover of weed beds, milfoil, aquatic weeds, and lily pads or under shaded docks, piers and overhanging trees and brush. Try Juanita Bay; Seward Park; Montlake Cut; Newport Canal; Kenmore; Andrews Bay; Yarrow Bay in Kirkland; Gene Coulon Park in Renton; Mercer Island near Luther Burbank Park; Leschi Park; Madison Park; Stan Sayres Park; and Mount Baker Park. A simple, light-to-medium-action, trout fishing rod and spinning reel with 4- to 8-pound main line on a drop-shot (egg-style) weight and size 4 to 6 hook attached to a three-way swivel is the “go-to” gear. Baits of choice are worms, maggots, a skirted crappie jig, or a chunk of perch meat. The WDFW website has a wealth of information at https://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/locations/ lowland-lakes. We live in wonderful place, don’t let summer slip past your fishing dreams! Mark Yuasa is a longtime fishing and outdoors writer. Born and raised in Seattle, and a U of W alum, Mark joined the Northwest Marine Trade Association in 2017 as the Director of Grow Boating Programs after 33 years at The Seattle Times. He also volunteers with the BSA Chief Seattle Council and National Order of the Arrow organizations, and enjoys fishing for salmon and other fi sh species in local waterways.

On Board Stern-Line Anchoring With the US/Canada border closed, and many out enjoying social distancing on boats, you may find yourself in popular anchorages with “hundreds of your closest friends.” While still lovely, it’s not the close-to-nature experience that many of us crave. So, what to do? Use a skill that marks a true Pacific Northwest cruiser— stern-line anchoring. This involves setting a bow anchor as normal, then running a line from the stern of your boat around something on shore, then back to the boat, where both ends of the line are cleated off on opposite sides of your stern. This method lets lots of boats safely anchor together in a smaller space, much more than swinging on a single hook would allow. It’s commonly used in cozy anchorages such as Inati Bay on Lummi Island, or smaller gunkholes. It’s also required for the “upslope anchoring” that’s used in steep and deep anchorages found on the Inside Passage. Etiquette requires that you anchor in the same manner as the boats already in an anchorage. If the others already have stern lines in place, then you will need to anchor that way as well - or find another place to anchor for the night. If stern-line anchoring isn’t yet in your cruising arsenal, give it a try! Here’s what you need:

Margaret Pommert is a Puget Sound native who started sailing as a teenager and is now a licensed captain and certified sail and power boating instructor. She’s a leader in the Pacific NW community of Women Who Sail and Powerboat , a leader with the International Off shore Safety at Sea with Hands-On, Training Organizer for The Sailing Foundation, and co-leader of the annual Waggoner Guide Inside Passage fl otilla to SE Alaska.

Spool of floating line: • The length you carry will depend on your boat, and whether you have ambitions of anchoring in some of the deep and steep anchorages of the Inside Passage. A 35-foot power catamaran might carry 300’. A 40-foot sailboat needs 400’. An ambitious 60’ power cruiser can get away with 600’. • Floating line is important for many reasons, including to make it more visible to other boaters and prevent you from wrapping it in your own prop or rudder. Deck brush handle: • No need to install a fancy permanent spooling system. A mop handle through the spool works fine for many boaters. Crew: • For most crews, this is minimum two-person job. One on the boat, tending helm and stern line spool. The other person running the end of the stern line to shore, around a rock, log, or ring there, and back into the dinghy. • The crew taking the line to shore should wear lifejackets and footwear appropriate for getting wet while stepping out of the dinghy, yet rugged enough to tolerate stepping on what may be steep rocks with sharp shells. Dinghy with oars: • Don’t use your dinghy outboard, thus avoiding wrapping the stern line in the dingy’s prop. • When going ashore, remember a dingy bow painter and hang onto it. • On the return trip from shore, rather than rowing, it’s often easiest to just pull the dinghy back to the boat with the line you’ve just laid out. Something on shore to run stern line around or through: • Desolation Sound has permanent mooring rings installed into the faces of rock walls that are accessible from the water. • You might find a log or rock to run the line around. Beware rough edges that could abrade the line. Ensure it is above the high tide line so line can’t float free! • Only take a 180 degree turn of the line through ring or around rock or log. When time to depart, you want to untie the end of the line from your stern cleat and reel it in without having to row ashore again to untie/unfoul it. • Canadian law prohibits running a stern line around a live tree, potentially killing it. While not U.S. law, it’s good practice to follow. Monitor your depth and tension on the stern line, as the tide goes up and down, and adjust accordingly. As the tide drops, the stern line may tend to pull you into shallower water. Congratulations, you’ve expanded your cruising options without having to travel further from home! Onward!

H A column by Nigel Barron

Ask Nigel

Based on the number of boats I’m seeing on Lake Washington and the increase in calls we’re getting at CSR, summer is in full swing! I recently heard from Jim in Seattle, who is moving from a power boat to a sailboat, and asked me about, “the bridge thing” on the freshwater side. From the saltwater of Puget Sound to the fresh water of Lake Washington, there are five bridges that must be negotiated. But fortunately, all these bridges use the same sound signal to request an opening; one prolonged blast (4 secondsl) and one short blast (less than 1 second). The first bridge to negotiate is the train bridge, (also known as Bridge 4, or the Salmon Bay Bridge), which is the toughest one when you are coming from the salt side. Depending on the status of the Ballard Locks, you may have to wait in a small holding area on one side of the bridge or the other. The clearance of this bridge is listed as 42 ft at high tide. The next bridge is the Ballard Bridge, with a clearance of 44 ft, followed by the Fremont Bridge, which has the lowest clearance at 30 ft. If you are continuing on to Lake Washington, next up would be the University Bridge with a 42 ft clearance, and then the Montlake Bridge, with a 46 ft clearance. It is important to remember that these bridges will not open to recreational marine traffic between 7-9 am and 4-6 pm on weekdays. Montlake Bridge, however, has a slightly different schedule as it is a state bridge. In early July, we at CSR Marine received a call from the owner of a newer sailboat following an unfortunate collision with the train bridge just outside the Locks. Of all the bridges, this one actually gets the most hits. I think it is because people’s stress loads are high while entering and exiting the Ballard Locks. The gates open, phew, done with that. Let’s get to the big water...BANG! I have had masts decide not to complete a race, but I’ve not hit a bridge before (knock on wood). But I assume it’s like anything mast related that is bad; loud and scary. If this happens, the most important thing to do is to make sure everyone on board is safe, and then examine the mast. If the mast is still up, you need to quickly determine if it is going to stay up and get the boat somewhere safe, where the damage can be evaluated.

52 NORTHWEST YACHTING < AUGUST 2020

In the case above where the boat hit the train bridge in July, they were very lucky. No one was hurt, and the mast, though totaled, was still up and not in danger of coming down. The owner called CSR first to schedule an inspection with the boom truck, and next called the insurance company to open up a claim. If you have a modern production boat, you stand a better chance of getting a new mast in a reasonable amount of time, and at a reasonable price. Not to get too far into specifics, but as an example, a production mast for a 35 ft boat costs the same as the lower spreaders for a TransPac 52, and will get here in 6 months less time. After the mast is removed, the insurance company will inspect the mast and look over the claim. In most instances, if you have hit something hard enough to total the mast, all the standing rigging along with the actual mast tube will be replaced. Additionally, the chain plates and the mast step will be evaluated, as these are all places that take some of the force in a collision. Before navigating the bridges, it’s really important to know your air draft so you know if you have clearance or not. It’s super easy to figure out, and may help you avoid a bridge collision. To get this clearance number, find a halyard that goes to the top of your mast. Add a tape measure and pull it up, making sure to add the wind instrument or VHF antenna to the length (make sure to measure from water level). If this measurement is anywhere close to the bridge clearance level, pull out your horn and wait for the bridge to open. Bridge operators don’t mind as they’d rather see you pass through safely, than risk it! Nigel Barron was born in England and developed his sea legs at an early age. He is currently the Project Manager at CSR Marine in Seattle where he has worked for 15 years as a rigger, then an installer, and now in his current role. He is also the captain of Crossfire, a Reichel-Pugh designed and McConaghy built custom race boat from Seattle.

THE YEAR WITHOUT A RENDEZVOUS BY RANDY WOODS

54 NORTHWEST YACHTING < AUGUST 2020

As the glow from the July 4th fireworks faded over San Juan Island, the revelers in the cozy Roche Harbor Resort seemed like any other gathering at the height of a mild Northwest summer. Although the warm weather took some time to improve after the typical chilly “June-uary,” Independence Day 2020 ended with a spectacular sunset over the green and blue palette that paints the Lower 48’s northwesternmost corner. Of course, anyone not living inside a bilge tank for the last four months knows the truth could not be more opposite. The novel COVID-19 virus has effectively locked our nation in a grip of fear over the spread of a brand-new infectious disease. On a social scale, one of the hardest-hit places in this part of the country has been Roche Harbor, the unofficial capital of the region’s boating community. “I’ve been here for 40 years, but this is the most difficult 4th of July we’ve ever had,” said Kevin Carlton, Harbormaster at Roche Harbor Resort. Since March, Carlton said, the resort could only operate at 50% capacity at its marina, famous Hotel de Haro, and three restaurants to comply with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) social distancing guidelines. “We had to spend a lot of time with our staff to figure it all out,” he explained. “You had to look for the permanent boaters who are out cruising, totaling maybe 40 or 50, so we might find moorage for arriving guests. Then there was the challenge of deciphering who was staying at which dock, deciphering how much is half of capacity. I remember thinking, ‘We’re really lucky to have these horrible problems.’” Robert Fiala, managing partner of Hampton Yacht Group, agreed that this July 4th was unlike most that have occurred at Roche Harbor. “We didn’t have the logroll event or the donut-eating contest or the parade,” he said. “But people were still having fun.” Dan Mundy, president of Alexander Marine USA, said it was critical to make sure that, despite the COVID crisis, Alexander would be able to open its summer office in Roche Harbor just before the holiday. “Ocean Alexander has built a legacy together with Roche Harbor,” Mundy said. “So, we worked closely with Roche, following all the CDC procedures, the social distancing, the mask wearing, and the sterilization of surfaces.” Cascade of Closures The July 4th event was a qualified, low-key success for Roche Harbor, but the true challenge will be how it gets through the next few months, as the coronavirus protocols continue to push the entire boating industry into uncharted waters. What began at first as a mild concern at the start of 2020, quickly steamrolled into a pandemic over the next few weeks, as the COVID-19 jumped to the U.S., first detected in the Seattle area in January, and quickly took off around the country and the world. Soon after the

first American deaths were reported at a nursing home in the Kirkland area, the boating community began thinking of how it might affect the start of “rendezvous season.” One of the first events of the year, the Selene Owners Rendezvous, scheduled for April 22-26, made the wrenching decision to cancel in March, followed quickly by Ocean Alexander’s West Coast Rendezvous (April 24-26), the Grand Banks Rendezvous, (May 6-10), the Willard Rendezvous (May 8-10) and Hampton Yacht Group’s event (May 28-30). Soon it became obvious that the entire season would be sacrificed when Washington State Governor Jay Inslee declared in mid-March that he would close schools and force the cancellation of all large public events. In the next few weeks, the rest soon fell into line, including Emerald Pacific’s Riviera Rendezvous (June 19-21), Tollyclub (June 24-28) and the Ranger Tug Rendezvous (Sept. 10-13). Last year, the season-ending Ranger Tug Rendezvous featured 225 boats and 600 attendees, making it the Roche Harbor’s largest event of 2019. Eventually, all 54 rendezvous events would be cancelled, with the hopes of rescheduling in 2021. The island community took another punch this spring when the border between the U.S. and Canada was closed, severely limiting the visitors to Roche Harbor. “We’re a community,” said Mundy. “We can’t put the public in danger just for a gathering. The rendezvous events we plan are very elaborate and have to do more with supporting the community. This is a group that shares similar lifestyles and we want to keep that intact.” One reason the loss of rendezvous events is not being deeply mourned in the boating industry has been the overall rise in boat sales. Randy Buckell, a founding partner at Emerald Pacific, said sales of yachts are doing well these days. Owning a yacht, he added, has a social distancing element built into it during a time of uncertainty. “We had to make quite a shift with the rendezvous, but we are experiencing tremendous sales,” Mundy agreed. “We’ve seen sales increases of 80% percent over the previous year. Instead of taking trips to Europe or checking out the VRBO listings, people are deciding it’s time to buy a yacht.” Harbormaster Carlton, however, credits Roche Harbor’s permanent moorage residents for the win. “They have really saved us,” he said. “We were very worried we were going to lose about 100 slips because of COVID, but we ended up only losing just one boat – and it was not even related to the pandemic. So, we are doing well; we’re resilient. Ripples Felt Elsewhere While everyone who has relied on rendezvous revenue is hurting right now, there are other businesses outside of the marine brokers feeling the same heat. For instance, Roche Harbor Resort Chef Bill Shaw said the challenges being faced at the three restaurants – McMillin’s Dining Room, the Madrona Bar & Grill and the Lime Kiln Cafés – are unprecedented in the 27 years he has worked there. “All three restaurants are

Lime Times

When Roche Harbor began, it was not the tony nerve center of the Northwest’s boating culture. The sheltered harbor of the west side if San Juan Island was once considered home to the Coast Salish community, known as whelaalk, until the 1850s, when the British and Americans began to claim ownership of the islands. Roche Harbor was named for Lt. Richard Roche, who served as a scout for the British Royal Marines encampment. The first Western industry to show promise in Roche Harbor was the mining of calcium carbonate, or limestone, which was processed for use in building roads and concrete structures in the U.S. Limestone quarrying was first done to the British Marines until 1872, when a military dispute was settled in favor of the United States. To 1886, Tacoma lawyer John S. McMillin purchased the site and created the Tacoma and Roche Harbor Lime Company, which operated lime kilns on the bluffs behind the harbor for many decades. McMillin also had a keen interest in boating and established the harbor as a place where Northwesterners would relax and celebrate boating culture. In 1886, he built the 20-room Hotel de Haro, named for Capt. Lopez de Haro, the first European to explore the islands in 1787, and began to establish the town’s focus on maritime industries and tourism. In 1956, all 4,000 acres of Roche Harbor, including 12 miles of coastline, was sold to Bellevue businessman Reuben J. Tarte, who began restoring the hotel, lime warehouse buildings, and the airport as a resort. In 1988, another businessman named Verne Howard of King’s Market and Rich Komen of Restaurants Unlimited, purchased the Roche Harbor property, which is now owned to Komen and Saltchuk Resources. Today Roche Harbor is both a resort and a year-round community.

H 56 NORTHWEST YACHTING < AUGUST 2020

open,” he said. “But we’re down due to space restrictions and the 50% capacity rule.” He’s also decided to make the menus smaller, so there’s less work needed in the kitchens. “The challenges have been just getting products shipped to us on time,” Shaw said.“ Soon we’ll have another problem with getting enough bread. They’re all little problems, but we’re getting through it,” Shaw added hopefully. “On the weekends, we manage to fill up the few tables we have available.” Shaw notes that an even larger problem has befallen the hotel crews. “We’ve lost almost all of our weddings this season,” Shaw said. “So even at our busiest time, everydays like a slow night for us.” Under Washington’s current “Phase 2” reopening rules, crowds larger than 50 people are not allowed, which has effectively eliminated the wedding business, except for the occasional small reception. Kenmore Air, which supplies daily flights between Seattle and the San Juan Islands, said that they were only getting about 10 passengers a day to the islands in early July, where they normally see 45 to 73 passengers. “The July 4th holiday did see an uptick in Kenmore’s business”, said Marketing Director Ben Cardin. “We still fly three times a day to Roche Harbor on our float planes,” he said in mid-July. The problem is, they tended to average 10 to 13 roundtrips (or “turns”) during the peak summer season. “We did a lot of business for the rendezvous,” Cardin said. “Some people would sail up to ‘Roche Harbor and others would fly up to meet up with their friends.” Each plane holds 6-10 passengers on the hour-long flight from Seattle to the San Juan Islands. The decline in business has forced Kenmore to cut back on its Lake Union flights on some days, and use the Kenmore docks on Lake Washington instead. “After each turn, we thoroughly clean each aircraft,” explains Cardin. “You can also now charter a flight for just your immediate family to limit exposure.”. A New Way of Doing Business? Some in the boating industry speculate that social distancing due to COVID may actually boost yacht sales in the Pacific Northwest. “Clients will be less able to travel abroad as they once did and will choose to self-isolate on the water, where there’s more room for family activities,” said Hampton’s Fiala. Rendezvousing will likely return next year, he predicted. “It’s an appreciation event, where you can connect with the customers and build relationships. It’s not as much about writing contracts.” “In 2021, we expect things will be bigger and better,” Carlton said. “But we may have to delay some of our plans and put aside our wish list for the time being. We still have 200 people on the wait list for a slip at Roche Harbor, so all in all, we’re resilient and will get through this one way or another.”

HOWARD APOLLONIO HITS HOME RUN WITH THE APOLLONIAN HULL 5201 BY SCHELLEEN RATHKOPF | PHOTOS BY LEVI CLARK

At age 17, most kids are searching for their date for Senior Prom or navigating the oftentimes awkward shift from youth into adulthood. Not renowned naval architect Howard Apollonio. By age 17, he had already built three boats. This was the start of a lifelong passion to design superior boats, and he believes he has done just that in Apollonian Hull 5201. This brand new 52’ motor yacht will make her debut at the Crow’s Nest Yachts’ dock on Seattle’s south Lake Union. Howard Apollonio grew up on the coast of Maine, known for its maritime history and 3,478 miles of dramatic coastline. A 1969 graduate of the University of Michigan, he pursued a degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and has been a Licensed Professional Engineer since 1974. His career in boatbuilding spans over 50 years and includes propulsion, designing advanced commercial and military craft, and running his own firm to design and engineering performance-oriented craft of all sorts. His yachts have been built in the US, Canada, Holland, Taiwan, and China by Christensen, Westport, Diaship/Heesen, Hampton/Regency, Cheoy Lee, West Bay/ SonShip, Queenship/Caribe, McKinna, Heisley, Rayburn, and Canoe Cove among others. Noticing a current lack of affordable pilothouse boats, the Apollonian team went to work to create Apollonian Hull 5201, a 52’ raised pilothouse with three staterooms, three heads, and a huge 16.8’ beam. With the same superior design qualities that set Apollonian’s boats apart from the rest, Hull 5201 is fast and efficient, user-friendly,

60 NORTHWEST YACHTING < AUGUST 2020

and features a sizeable galley and spacious layout often only found in much larger boats. “We have desperately needed a boat like this,” says Vic Parcells, broker of Crow’s Nest Yachts in Seattle. “Hull #1 has arrived in Seattle with a buyer already lined up,” Parcells adds. “Hull #2 and Hull #3 are now in production, and also have dealers from California and Florida lined up.” The deck and hull have been created using special vacuum-bagged and infused fiberglass with vinyl ester resin construction to minimize the deck and hull weight by 35% while maintaining strength. This process produces laminate that is especially tough and resistant to damage, with a solid feel in rough water. Interior construction is equally robust, light, and quiet, having been cored throughout. Sea rails are at the edges of virtually all horizontal surfaces to help keep objects from falling off and can double as hand grips to help people balance as the boat rolls and pitches in rougher seas. Her exterior is proportionate and modern, with wide decks and cockpit that are spacious enough to give passengers room to stretch their legs. Then there’s her cruising speed. She will arrive with a 430 hp Cummins, offering a cruise rate in the low 17-18-knots range. Stay tuned as a punchier 660 hp Cummins option is coming for higher mid-20s cruising speeds! If stability is what you’re after, the Apollonian Hull 5201 exceeds the U.S. Coast Guard’s stability requirement for licensed passenger vessels in Exposed Waters (ocean) service. That’s a lot of stability for you, your friends, family and fur babies on

Vic D. Parcells Crow's Nest Yachts, Seattle LLC 809 Fairview Pl. N. Suite 150 Seattle WA 98109 T: (206) 229-3134 vparcells@apoyachts.com Vic Parcells is the importer of the Apollonian 5201, and is currently looking for dealer partnerships in the USA. Seattle’s Crow’s Nest Yacht’s is the exclusive Pacific Northwest dealer. A Washington native and fixture of Seattle’s yachting scene for over 40 years, Vic started boating before he could even walk. A second-generation boat salesman, Vic apprenticed with his father beginning at age 17. He has also managed a variety of yachts and been a fishing guide and skipper along the West Coast, from Canada to Cabo. Vic is a partner at Seattle’s Crow’s Nest Yachts and has delivered yachts all over the world, including in the Caribbean via the Panama Canal.

About Apollonio Naval Architecture Apollonio Naval Architecture offers leading edge yacht and commercial craft design, engineering, styling, and space planning for a wide range of unique and advanced craft, including modern and traditional monohulls, catamarans, trimarans, SWATHs, and hydrofoils. They are versatile and flexible specialists in hull form, ride comfort, propulsion, structure, and noise control. The company’s activities encompass design engineering, client liaison, marketing, and testing for all aspects of engineered boat design. Projects have included custom and production motor yachts from 42 to 160 feet, built in Europe, Asia, and North America. Other projects include constructing fast passenger, fire, fishing, and military vessels from 17 to 170 feet, and consulting on sailing and fishing vessels from 32 to 110 feet. Emphasis is given to custom yachts, high-speed ferries, and other advanced commercial vessels, including SWATHs (submerged hull catamarans) based on the company’s very successful 87-footer. They are highly regarded worldwide for accomplishments in vessel performance, propulsion, arrangement, and styling. Apollonio Naval Architecture operates as a professional engineering entity, able to meet the most stringent requirements for safety, structural integrity, and seaworthiness. At the same time, Apollonio insists on producing vessels that are good-looking, well-proportioned, and have classic style. The company incorporates important human engineering factors that make each boat pleasant to be on, easy to move about, and provides light and visibility on board. For more information, visit www.apollonionavarch.com

board. “The boat is just what we need,” adds Parcells. “She’s an affordable raised pilothouse that easily replaces the Navigator Meridian and Carver. Getting her here was three years of work from some of the best in the business.” To learn more about her, we went directly to the source: Howard R. Apollonio, PE, Naval Architect and Marine Engineer. NWY: What are you most jazzed about with the Apollonian Hull 5201? This was a chance to be given a free hand to apply the benefit of a lifetime of boating, including 50-plus years full-time experience, to create a superior, user-friendly vessel. This was an unfettered do-what-is-best opportunity. This meant incorporating efficiency, sea kindliness, styling, ergonomics, spaciousness, and reliability to create a comfortable, safe, and attractive yacht. NWY: What is super unique about her that sets her apart from other yachts of similar size? What is unique is the combination of all those factors noted above in an affordable package. Moreover, the configuration of this yacht in the raised pilothouse style meets those objectives in a form that the market ignored decades ago. There are almost none like it being produced now in its size range.

NWY: What is your personal experience with her? As the designer, I was fully involved from start to finish. Boat building starts with concept formation and moves on to the creation of the specifications. From there, the designs and calculations are made, then it moves on to detailed aspects of construction oversight, and finally on to testing. NWY: Who is going to absolutely love her? With space for families, privacy for adults, ease of use and handling, good visibility throughout, and efficient operation over a wide range of popular speeds, this is a yacht that will appeal to many. NWY: Anything else you’d like to share about her? We’re most proud of her construction that includes infused advanced composite construction for a rugged, lightweight hull that enhances her stability and efficient performance. Propulsion, appliances, and equipment with readily available service in the United States are also incorporated for maximum serviceability and propulsive efficiency. This is an American design for the American market on both coasts and the Great Lakes. Joining architect Howard Apollonio on the Apollonian Hull 5201 are project leaders Vic Parcells, Patrick Chen, and Chris Driver.

Racing Sheet Good news! Racing is back on in the Northwest, it’s just a little different than before. Competitions range from self-managed rabbit starts with the J24 fleet on Lake Washington to weekend “competitive cruising” on the Sound to gorilla dinghy regattas run by volunteers. People are figuring out how to get on the water, all the while keeping distant and safe. The Salish 200 grabbed the attention of our team, Absolutely, and we knew we had to give it a go. Organized for racers by racers, the Salish 200 is a new breed of event with some new ideas and of course, some old ones. I couldn’t help but think that this must have been how yacht racing first got started in the Northwest; a group of people with boats wanting to see who was the fastest and who knew the waters the best. While the equipment has evolved, the desire to compete has not changed one bit. The race had an entry limit of 25 boats and a crew limit of five per boat. This, combined with no official shoreside events, helped to keep the large gatherings effectively nonexistent which was critical to the event’s success.

The course was a bit more dynamic than traditional races, with sailors being able to choose between effectively four different courses. Aptly named the Salish 200, Puget Sound 100 and Salish 100, the flexibility allowed racers to choose their own adventure based on the wind and tides that the day presented. It’s not a bad idea with some races recently upended due to shifting conditions. In practice, the Salish 200 course effectively starts in Port Townsend Bay, heads north and round the San Juan Islands, and then south and around Vashon Island with a scoring gate off Marrowstone Island. Alternatively, you could sail south first and then head north to the San Juans again with a scoring gate at the mid-point off Marrowstone Island. Additionally, there is no specified rounding direction, leaving it to the navigators to make the call whether to turn left or right at the islands. Onboard Absolutely, we opted to head north and round the San Juans counterclockwise. High winds were forecasted in the straits, and the angle was looking like an explosive blast reach across, followed by a steady overnight breeze to help us dodge the rocks. The start was

Finish order and corrected times for each course: Salish 200 Dark Star (34:20) Ocelot (39:44) San Juan 100 Madrona (14:07) Dark Star (14:18)

Freja (14:49) Hamachi (14:52) Absolutely (15:29) Hammer / Secret Squirrel (15:41) Sir Isaac (16:26) Lodos (16:52) Raku (16:55) More Jubilee (17:11) Jaded (17:11) Different Drummer (17:37)

scheduled for Friday evening at 7pm, and with a wind forecasted in the low 30s it made for a memorable sunset as we set off. Port Townsend Bay was a bit of a traffic jam as the fleet struggled to get sails hoisted in the high winds, all the while dodging the hundreds of crab pots set just off the pier. Racing got underway with a simply epic close reach in a packed fleet along the shallows of Point Hudson and out into the straits. With a building breeze and choppy seas, it made for a rough ride, but things began to settle down as the fleet entered Rosario Strait and sailed into darkness. After a long evening of shifting winds and flowing tides, the sun rose on us as we passed the quarter-way mark at Patos Island, then turned and sailed along the Canadian border. With the border being officially closed, both U.S. and Canadian Coast Guards were close by and keeping an eye on us, it took a bit of focus to make sure we were tacking before crossing the line and going upwind. Heading back into the straits, the stiff westerly stayed strong overnight. A decent wave train and the breeze shifting a bit behind made for some downright epic surfing.

Puget Sound 100 Ocelot (22:04) Gray Wolf (23:49) Bella (DNF)

Reentering Puget Sound, the wind slowly dropped as we worked south and crossed the halfway point, finishing the Salish 100 portion of the race. Rather than call it, we gave it a go and continued south towards Vashon, eventually consolidating with the rest of our fleet as the wind dropped to zero at Point No Point. With a great race behind us and a very long, light air affair ahead of us, we made the call to keep it fun and head for home before the rain set in. All in all, 17 boats finished the 100-mile race with all but two choosing the north course. It was Jonathan McKee and Matt Pistay, doublehanding the Bieker 40 Darkstar, who took home all the marbles crossing the finish line after 34 hours of racing, followed by Ben Glass skippering Ocelot five hours later! These two were the only finishers of the full 200-mile course. We can’t wait for next year’s race and give it another go!

Ports of Call SWANTOWN MARINA & BOATWORKS, OLYMPIA, WASHINGTON

68 NORTHWEST YACHTING < AUGUST 2020

Something for Every Crew Member Olympia, Washington, situated in the extreme southern end of Puget Sound on Budd Inlet, is an ideal cruising destination for the entire family. Washington state’s waterfront capital sits in the shadow of the rugged Olympic Mountains, visible to the northwest, and the state capitol dome, dominating the skyline to the east. With a marina and a landing within walking distance of downtown, plenty of restaurants and shopping opportunities combined, natural beauty, and the friendliness of a small town, Olympia is worth a visit.

Sand Man Stroll along the Percival Landing docks and boardwalk. A visit to the landing would not be complete without a touring the refurbished, 110-year-old tug, Sand Man, which hauled everything from oysters to log barges for much of its working life. Today, the vessel is operated by a non-profit organization, The Sand Man Foundation. The boat is open to public viewing on most weekends and is free, but donations are accepted.

Budd Inlet splits into two smaller waterways, West Bay and East Bay, surrounding the narrow finger of land that comprises the Port of Olympia. Moorage is available in both bays. Navigation aids mark the dredged channels that narrow from 28 feet to 14 feet wide. The area was visited in 1792 by Peter Puget, as part of British Exploration under Captain George Vancouver. By 1860, Captain Sam Percival built the first commercial pier on Puget Sound, Percival Landing, for steamships. Today, Percival Landing is a social hub with its pleasure boat moorage, city parks, restaurants and nearly mile-long boardwalk.

When Pigs Fly On the way back to the marina, stop at Olympia’s Farmers Market (olympiafarmersmarket.com) for provisions. The market’s roof features a distinctive “when pigs fly” weather vane on the roof, and with 100 vendors, the market is reportedly one of the largest farmers markets in the state. The 46-year-old market receives approximately 400,000 visitors a season. The airy market located between Swantown Marina and Percival Landing is usually open Thursday through Sunday, April to October, and limited days during the off-season. This summer in light of the COVID-19 health crisis, the market is open Friday through Sundays and will take online orders. It teems with local fruits, vegetables, seafood, meats, bakery items, flowers, crafts, and seven take-out restaurants. Due to Department of Health regulations, pets are not allowed in the market.

Over in East Bay, John Swan would be proud of the development that has taken place on his former property known as Swan’s Slough. Today the Port of Olympia’s Swantown Marina & Boatworks is one of the largest marinas in the state and the center of recreational boating activities in southern Puget Sound. Made for Walking There is plenty to do when visiting the capital city. Adjacent to the marina is Hands On Children’s Museum (hocm.org) with its indoor interactive exhibits and outdoor discovery center. History buffs will enjoy a self-guided walking tour of Olympia’s five-square-block historical district, an 1860 house museum, and a tour of the state capitol building. Olympia has no shortage of antique stores, other shopping choices include several art galleries, boutiques with one-of-a-kind items, and bookstores. The WET Science Center (wetsciensecenter.org) is an interactive, hands-on place that provides information about water, a precious resource, through fun and games. The center features interactive exhibits, weekend activities for the family, tours of water facilities, and environmental presentations on water issues. WET has a range of activities and games for kids of all ages, but most are designed for children older than ten and adults. Exhibits and video games cover a range of topics: the water cycle, water use, and conservation, wastewater treatment, why some things should not be flushed down the drain, reclaimed water, and the Puget Sound and its stewardship. Admission is free. A nice walk is around Capitol Lake located just below the state capitol building.

Located a couple blocks away is another option for fresh seafood, Olympia Seafood Company, established in 1999 by the DeRito family. It is considered by many as the best fresh seafood outlet in southern Puget Sound. The refrigeration cases and live tanks are teeming with different fish, crustaceans, and bivalves. Gastronomy If you need a refreshment after exploring Olympia, The Eastside Club is all about beer, with 40-plus taps pouring the finest brews from the Northwest and beyond. The pub was the inspiration for Moe’s Tavern on “The Simpsons” TV show. The capital city has no shortage of good eateries. Budd Bay Café is famous for their indoor and outdoor view of Percival Landing and sunset dining, boasting 180-degree bay view and features an extensive selection of seafood and steaks. It is hard to choose what to eat at the Olympia Oyster House, where the oyster is the star, but a look at the menu will also show a selection of appetizers, seafood, steak, and pasta dishes. Other can’t-go-wrong options, all within easy walking distance, are Anthony’s Homeport, Dockside Bistro, Gardner’s Seafood & Pasta, Mercato Ristorante, Pizzeria LaGitana, Chelsea Farms Oyster Bar and for breakfast all day long, go to King Solomon’s Reef, a retro diner with booths and a counter.

Washington State’s Jewels Hop aboard the free Dash Shuttle, that travels east up Capital Way to the State Capitol for a tour. Free guided tours of the Washington State Legislative Building are offered seven days a week hourly, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays, and between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekends.

Moorage Swantown Marina & Boatworks (swantownmarina.com) offers over 70 guest moorage slips for vessels to 100’, gas, diesel, pumpout, 30- and 50-amp power, water, Wi-Fi, restrooms, showers, laundry, garbage drop, recycling, ice, 82-ton Marine Travelift, and chandlery. Reservations accepted for an additional $5. The marina can be reached at (360) 528-8049, monitors VHF 65A.

The free informative tour lasts about 50 minutes and you will learn about the building’s architecture, the 287-foot dome and the massive 10,000-pound Louis Comfort Tiffany chandelier suspended from it. Also learn about the magnificent colored marble from Italy, France, and Germany throughout, and visit the legislative wings to hear about the workings of state law.

Dean Hislop calls Anacortes home. They cruise year-round between Olympia, Washington, and northern Vancouver Island, spending more than 100 nights a year aboard M/V Easy Goin’. They enjoy meeting other boaters, exploring new locations, sampling local cuisine, and collecting informa-tion, experiences, and images. Deane is a freelancer whose work has appeared in regional, national and international publications.
