Fly That Whale Flag!

The month of August marks one of the busiest times of the year for boating in Puget Sound, and now, more than ever, the San Juan County Environmental Department is urging all boaters to join the effort to keep whales and boaters safe by watching for and using a whale warning flag. Much like the recognizable “diver down” flag, the flag’s purpose is to alert boaters when there are whales in the area. Commonly seen on whale watch boats and research vessels, private boaters may also display a whale warning flag to alert fellow boaters to whales in the area. Using the flag is easy: When you spot whales, or other boats grouped together already flying whale warning flags, slow down and take a moment to figure out where the whales are relative to you. Then, put up your whale warning flag to help spread word of the sighting. Keep the flag up while the whales are within a half mile of you, and maintain compliance with whale protection laws and guidelines by doing the following: + Slow down to 7 knots or less + Turn off fish finders and/or depth sounders + Maintain a minimum distance of 300 yards from their sides and 400 yards from their path of travel in either direction + Avoid cutting in front or following behind whales if it can be avoided The waters of Puget Sound are critical habitat for the endangered Southern Resident killer whales, who are highly impacted by vessel disturbances. “Boaters can play a huge role in the recovery of the Southern Residents by doing their part and helping to protect not just these whales but all of our marine wildlife and resources,” explains Alanna Frayne, the Soundwatch & Be Whale Wise Program coordinator at The Whale Museum. “So, keep a sharp lookout!” To obtain a whale warning flag for yourself, or to learn more about the initiative, visit: whaleflag.org.

Everett Authorizes Ambitious Waterfront Plan

PHOTO COURTESY OF PORT OF EVERETT, IMAGE BY SKYTECH AERIAL PHOTO, INC.

Get ready for a very different look on Everett’s working waterfront over the next year. In June, the Port of Everett Commission cleared the way for the Port’s “Mills to Maritime” initiative, which will redevelop part of the former Kimberly-Clark paper mill site. By signing a $17.75 million federal BUILD grant agreement from the U.S. Department of Transportation and awarding a $2.7 million construction contract with SRV Construction Inc., Port CEO Lisa Lefeber has approved the $36 million initiative, which will convert the site into a new maritime cargo hub for the city of Everett. SRV Construction will now begin the initial preload work necessary to prepare for the site for development, while the Port staff will solicit bids for construction of the project’s second phase. After acquiring the land about 18 months ago, the Port had to remove more than 180,000 tons of contaminated soil and leftover rubble from the mill’s demolition in 2012. The new terminal will be designed with strict environmental controls, such as stormwater runoff treatment. Located between the Port of Everett Seaport and Naval Station Everett, the cargo terminal on the 33-acre parcel of land is expected to create hundreds of new jobs for the region. At press time, the Port said it was on target to break ground in mid-July and the new terminal is expected to open in fall 2022. The terminal project, however, is not the only change on the city’s waterfront. Along with the recently opened Hotel Indigo (indigoeverett.com) and a host of restaurants being built (those include both the Asian-inspired Fisherman’s Jacks and South Fork Bakery), the Port is also now home to a Freedom Boat Club (freedomboatclub.com) membership club franchise. For more information on the latest port developments, visit: portofeverett.com.

‘Tis the Seasoning Spice things up in the galley this summer with these versatile Northwest-made seasoning blends that are fit for easy grilling and chilling.

Spiceology Chef Collabs Much like the name implies, Spiceology offers an enticing array of mix-and-match spice blends for playing master chef in the kitchen. The Seattle-based brand is keeping it local, too, with two new collaboration collections, one made by Matt Crawford of Oregon’s Sasquatch BBQ (try Sassy’s Butter Toss, a rich, savory buttery blend, on the likes of chicken, potatoes, and even popcorn) and the other from Spokane’s own Chad White. Chef White’s Flavor Hog, crafted with an amazing blend that includes molasses granules for a touch of sweet, and Ancho and Habanero peppers for a little heat, is ripe for rubbing all over pork ribs before tossing them on the grill. ($9.99-$22.99; available at spiceology.com) El Gaucho Spice Trio Take your favorite steakhouse to sea! Inspired by the traditional coal pit cooking techniques used by the cowboys of the vast Argentinian grasslands, these seasonings from Seattle’s revered El Gaucho are sure to add a fiery kick to your next steak, available in varying spice levels— Classic, Wicked Spice, and ye be warned, Diablo Spice. ($13 each, or $28 for the trio; available at El Gaucho restaurants in Seattle, Bellevue, and beyond, or at elgaucho.com) 32

Tom Douglas Rub with Love Veggie Rub Tom Douglas’ signature Rub with Love spices are stalwarts in many Northwest kitchens, but come August when the farmers markets are flush, it’s the Veggie Rub we turn to the most. Crafted with an appealing combination that includes marjoram, fennel seed, and lemon peel, this blend is as delicious on grilled veg as it is stirred into ranch-style dip and served with crisp crudité for cocktail hour. ($8.99, available at Tom Douglas outposts, including the newly-expanded Dahlia Bakery downtown, on Amazon, and at rubwithlove.com) World Spice Merchants Pacific Salmon Cure No cook stove on board? No sweat. With World Spice’s Pacific Salmon Cure blend you can cure your catch a few days ahead of time, and then stash it in the cooler until you’re ready to eat. Bright with California bay and accented with nutmeg and chili, this easy prep mix is perfect for a hot summer’s day snack. See pic above and find the curing recipe on their blog: silkroaddiary.com/pacific-salmon-cure/. ($12; available at the World Spice outpost in Pike Place Market, or worldspice.com)

Made of stainless steel, the vessel is double-walled and vacuum insulated to protect pre-chilled beverages from warm salty air. Made in the ShadeFin August is always the sunniest month of the year in the Northwest, that rare time when the area’s most sensitive-skinned boaters need sun protection. Since shade is scarce on the open water, TACO Marine offers the ShadeFin Boat Shade, which can attach to most rod-holders, T-tops, or gunnels and provide 30 square feet of cooling shade. Once secured, the ShadeFin’s anodized-aluminum structural ribs can be unfurled and locked in to reveal durable WeatherMax 3D fabric panels (in white or black), providing a UPF 50+ sun protection rating. As the sun moves through the sky, the portable, 12-pound shade can be moved to different mounting locations and later folded up for easy storage on the way back to the dock. $1,099.99-$1,199.99 // Available at area West Marine stores, tacomarine.com/shade-store. Everybody must get coned Some things just don’t need much explanation. Airhead’s latest water toy, The Big Orange Cone, is, well… a big orange cone. And it floats on the water. Named one of the Top Products for 2021 by Boating Industry magazine, the inflatable cone holds up to four riders and can be towed like an innertube via a

Kwik-Connect tow point. Standing about 5 feet high when fully inflated, the cone has eight foam-padded handles to hold onto and a lip around the bottom where people can stand and surf the wake. Made of 30-gauge PVC and a 840-denier double-stitched nylon cover, this tough cone is built for hours of fun and can handle a lot of heavy traffic. $460.79 // airhead.com/products/ big-orange-cone. The 3-hp 1103 C model, a new addition to Torqeedo’s Travel series, features an innovative, direct-drive motor design, powered by a high-capacity 915-watt-hour lithium battery. Secured by a strong aluminum pylon, the ultra-quiet 1103 C provides a 73% increase in capacity, compared to base models, and delivers 10% more power from 1,000 to 1,100 watts. A suitable power source for all small tenders, skiffs or RIBs up to 1,500 kg, the 1103 C is light enough (11 kg) to remove easily from the transom for recharging via solar panel. $2,699 // Available from Fisheries Supply in Fremont, fisheriessupply.com. 35

Track Hack Think of Apple’s AirTag as your own personal bloodhound: Attach it to your frequently misplaced items (i.e. the boat keys!), link them up to the Find My app, and then if one inevitably goes missing, it can be located easily from your iPhone. And though not originally designed as such, they’ve proven to be pretty effective at tracking my fellow Fidos prone to wander, too. Choose from an array of customizable emojis and engravings to make it their own. Naturally, I vote for adding a pretty puppy icon, a polished P, and if I can talk my mom into it, a matching Airtag Hermès Key Ring to go with it. $29 // apple.com. Macaron Me I expect to be treated like the queen that I am, and these Lavender Dog Macarons from PUCCI are regal, indeed: Crafted from 100% natural, corn-free, wheat-free non GMO ingredients, and made with no artificial coloring or preservatives, these hard treats also boast a delightfully chewy texture that keeps me nicely distracted and gnawing away as my subjects, ahem, I mean humans, prepare to make way. $20 for a box of 6 // puccicafe.com.

Boredom Beater When the monthly magazine deadline comes along, Mom and I spend a lot of time at the NWY offices making sure everything is just right. Once I approve my page, I keep myself well entertained with my iFetch Interactive Ball Launcher. The model not only launches tennis balls 10, 20, or even 30 feet with the touch of the button for a game of fetch, it also comes complete with a hands-free mode in which I simply drop a ball into the top opening and then eagerly wait to see which of the three chutes it rolls out. $115 for the small model, $199 for the larger // amazon.com. I’ve Got Mail The truly luxurious options found in the subscription boxes from BoxDog have me yapping for joy when I spy the mail carrier each month. Each delivery is packed with a super yummy selection of the brand’s famous handmade treats, a vegan skincare item (think: CBD oil, shampoos, balms, and more), and then the toys that I deem are worthy of my very distinguished tastes. $35 per month for a 12-month subscription, or $40 per box for a quarterly delivery // boxdog.com.

Pearl is a feisty and opinionated Jack Russell Terrier born on November 7, 2013. Her favorite treat is organic, non-GMO natural chicken jerky, as she likes to take care of her girlish figure. 2021 MJM Yachts 53 Series Built for superior performance, with versatile layout options, the new MJM 53z and 53zi models available from Sail Northwest are sure to satisfy your need for speed.

For those looking for a little speed to get their pulses racing this summer, look no further than MJM Yachts’ new 53 series yacht. The MJM 53 offers a versatility rarely seen in the market, as buyers can choose from a wealth of layouts, and as well as from both the 53zi inboard and 53z outboard options. With its swift outboard engines, the 53z speedster allows you to enjoy all the comfort of the yachting lifestyle, along with the freedom, ease, and convenience of a shallower draft that makes it ideal for weekend adventuring. Billed as the largest outboard express cruiser, the 53z tops out at an astounding 50 MPH from its muscular 300hp quad Mercury Verado engines (400hp is optional) and handles like a top-of-the-line sports car. Even at moderate speeds, the Verado engines produce very little noise and are mostly hidden behind the transom. The 53zi option features extremely efficient inboard engines that reach cruising speeds of 36 knots, a feature owners and operators will surely appreciate. While the 53 is built for excitement, it also has luxury accommodations for up to seven people belowdecks. For the first time, MJM is offering a two-cabin dual master suite in its standard layout, including en suite heads with glass-wall showers. There are four other layout options 38

available, including a family-friendly design with twin bed berths. Just three steps up on the flush bridge deck, boaters can enjoy a spacious, open layout with moveable chairs and memory-foam settees that can be converted into berths. Breath in that fresh summer air. A truly remarkable feature, the pilothouse can be fully opened with roll-up sides or sliding glass windows, along with the aft end and electric front windows, to let in the sunshine and summer sea breezes for a feeling of openness. To protect from the sun, an optional, full-length Bimini top is available. And when the regular Northwest weather returns in the fall, the windows can all clamp down shut, making the 53 a flexible, climate-controlled, all-season boat. The galley features Corian countertops, cherrywood cabinetry, a skylight for ventilation, and a recessed sink with a removable cutting-board cover. Appliances include a 5.5-cubic-foot refrigerator, a two-burner induction cooktop, and a convection/microwave oven. An aft serving bar helps keep guests entertained, with an icemaker and tumbler storage. Using high-tech, epoxy-composite materials, MJM has made the hull both lighter and stronger than previous models. The Doug

An optional Seakeeper gyro stabilizer can be added to reduce 93% of the boats roll, even when moored at the dock. For pilothouse navigation, the helm features two Stidd 500 seats and a 24-inch, varnished teak Edson destroyer wheel, plus a teak chart table. Electronic equipment includes a suite of Raymarine products, such as a gS 165 Hybrid Touch GPS plotter, a multi-display fathometer, a 24-inch radar with dome, Ray 218 VHF, and an AIS 650 tracking system. In the 53z, the quad engines are operated with a Mercury VesselView MFD controller and joystick piloting system, with Skyhook and autopilot functions. JUST TWELVE SHORT PAGES INTO DANIEL JAMES BROWN’S #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING BOOK THE BOYS IN THE BOAT, WHICH CHRONICLES THE REAL-LIFE STORY OF NINE MEMBERS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON MEN’S CREW AND THEIR INSPIRING QUEST FOR GOLD AT THE 1936 BERLIN OLYMPICS, READERS ARE INTRODUCED TO THE TENTH CHARACTER IN THE TALE. THIS ALL-IMPORTANT SUPPORTING CAST MEMBER IS NOT A PERSON, BUT RATHER A BUILDING—THE ASUW SHELL HOUSE, HOME TO THOSE NOW-FAMOUS BOYS AND THE COLLEGIATE CREWS THAT CAME AFTER THEM AND THE WORKSHOP FOR FAMED RACING SHELL BUILDER GEORGE Y. POCOCK. NOT TO BE LOST IN THE PAST, THE SHELL HOUSE IS NOW INSPIRING A GRASSROOTS MOVEMENT TO PRESERVE AND REJUVENATE THE HISTORIC SITE SO IT CAN BE ENJOYED FOR GENERATIONS TO COME.

Tucked along the lapping shores of the Montlake Cut on the edges of the UW in Seattle, the World War I hangar was originally built in 1918 by the U.S. Navy. Its purpose was to store seaplanes and act as a training ground for budding aviators, but the Great War ended before it was fully used. The building was turned over to the University of Washington in 1919, and given its proximity to the water, the college’s rowing teams adopted it as their home base. Over the next hundred years, the sight of the UW crew making their way up the Cut, stroke by precious stroke, would become as synonymous with the city of Seattle as the Space Needle, Mount Rainier, and both Union and Washington lakes. “The spirit of this place is incredible,” says Nicole Klein, the capital campaign manager for the University of Washington’s The Next 100 Years initiative now leading the charge for restoration. “The sounds and smells here give you an immediate sense of place. You can hear the seaplanes flying over, boats idling by, geese honking, a coxswain yelling commands on the Cut... There’s this smell of lingering sweat, the bright sunlight streaming through windows, an almost palpable presence of history.” That history is long and rich. The Shell House played an integral role in the story of that 1936 team that ultimately won gold—it was the place where they built camaraderie and confidence under the tutelage of coach Al Ulbrickson. The upper loft is the stuff of legends, a sparse space once filled with the smell of wood shavings as George Pocock labored away on his renowned wooden racing shells crafted from Northwest-felled timber. From here, Pocock built a racing dynasty, his shells dominating consecutive Olympics to garner 21 gold medals from 1920 to 1964 (wooden shells were replaced by fiberglass ones starting with the ‘68 Olympics). Yet another UW crew rowed from here and won gold in the 1948 Games. It was also the original home to the Lake Washington Rowing Club (LWRC), whose illustrious women’s team won the first-ever National Women’s Rowing Association Championship in 1966, and then again in 1969. But, during the early ‘80s, the building fell into disuse. The crew and Pocock had moved to the new Coniber Shellhouse at the far north end of Union Bay near Husky Stadium in 1949. It then spent 30 plus years known as “The Canoe House,” hosting the LWRC. A family even lived upstairs for a while, renting out vessels 53

for students to venture out on the Cut. In 1976, the Waterfront Activities Center opened and vessel rental activity was headquartered there, and the Shell House was relegated to boat storage. Dust gathered, the doors were rolled shut. The distinct frontage became a familiar landmark to yachters cruising past to tailgate at football games, a quiet giant that overlooked the kayakers and canoeists paddling by. Even after an era sitting at slumber, the Shell House today still closely resembles the iteration that Joe Rantz, the primary subject in The Boys in the Boat, first laid eyes on during the inaugural day of tryouts in 1933; the weathered, shingle-clad exterior walls pitch inward as they rise, drawing the eye up to the unique gambrel-style roof. At water level, two enormous sliding doors, the upper halves adorned with massive windows, open to reveal an interior defined by soaring wooden beams and sun-dappled concrete floors. In ‘33, a wide wooden ramp ran down from the doorway to a launch dock for the shells; nowadays a much narrower path leads directly into the Cut. When The Boys in the Boat book debuted in 2013, it was a sensation. The rights were quickly optioned for a movie, drawing national and international attention to the Shell House, and bringing fans to Seattle (these eager tourists even inspired a local The Boys in the Boat tour). That all prompted discussions amongst UW staffers, with then-new Recreation Director Matt Newman asking: Why wasn’t this historic building being better utilized, both by the university and by the community at large? Thus was born The Next 100 Years campaign, the $13 million initiative to restore the historic hangar. Klein, who had been involved in fundraising at UW since 2006, came onboard the project in 2017. She has spent the past four years working towards building the plan for the future and raising the funds that would allow UW to create what they envision would be a flexible, multi-use space; one used for special events and gatherings, but also that acts as a “welcome mat” and historical cultural center for the public to come, learn, and reflect. “It will truly be the ‘front dock’ to the UW campus–greeting students, and welcoming the public to experience our rich and complex waterfront history,” states the campaign’s website. In 2018, the building was granted historical landmark status by the city as it celebrated its centennial birthday. The team has since worked with design firm SHKS Architects on the initial feasibility studies and renderings, with both parties working towards preserving what makes the facility so special already. “The goal of the restoration is to preserve the magic, the patina, and the authenticity of the building as it is,” Klein explains. The plans include restoring the historic Pocock loft, dedicating that and other additional space to the display of historic boats and informative exhibits on the local military, aviation, rowing, and sailing stories the building holds dear. They expect to draw in first-time Seattle tourists, curious locals, prospective and current students, fans of the book and the future movie, and even draw from the many Pocock aficionados found in this rowing-savvy region. Other key features will include a café; a classroom for student use and lectures; gift shop; and an expansive open events space available for rental. The signature sliding doors will be restored to full working order, rolling open to create outdoor access across a stunning 65-foot-long expanse open to the water. After a pandemic lull that prompted the halt of the popular tours and with the much-anticipated movie mired in production delays and changing of hands, it seems as if the project is poised to gain a stroke or two here shortly. After being recently acquired themselves by hometown Amazon, MGM Studios now controls the movie rights and the script. And, none other than A-list star George Clooney is set to direct the feature film with his production company Smokehouse Pictures alongside producer Grant Heslov. (The film release date was TBD at press time, but is expected to start filming next April.) But there’s much work left to be done: The campaign is well shy of the $10 million needed to start construction, and that goal needs to be fully funded by next June in order to move forward.

Klein points to a story woven into the very fabric of the Shell House story as a source of optimism. In 1936, the UW boys were complete underdogs in Berlin. It was an Olympics that, much like the one currently occurring in Tokyo, was fraught with anticipation, not caused by a pandemic-related pause as now, but by burgeoning tensions in Europe due to the rise of the Nazi party in Germany. For Hitler, the Games were supposed to be a show of German strength and superiority, and the young, scrappy Americans had no place in the plan. The boys rowed through a political firestorm, drawing the far outside lane for the race, balking at the start after missing the flag drop, and even powering through stroke Don Hume almost passing out during the leg. “And yet, they prevailed,” Klein says with a smile. Back in 2013, it was much ballyhooed that the book saved the building, but in 2021, Klein now hopes it will be the community that rallies around the cause to restore it. “This building has a heartbeat, a soul, and layers and layers of story to it,” Klein concludes. “And it’s a heart that deserves to keep beating, for the university, for the city, and for all of us.” For more information on the ASUW Shell House, or to give to The Next 100 Years Campaign, visit asuwshellhouse.uw.edu.

SOME BUSINESS IDEAS EMERGE AS A DOODLE ON A DINNER NAPKIN, OTHERS BROUGHT TO LIFE WHEN PITCHED TO VENTURE CAPITALISTS IN A BOARDROOM, AND STILL OTHERS ARE BORN AFTER MONTHS OF DABBLING AWAY IN A GARAGE. BUT FOR GUZZLE H2O (GUZZLEH2O.COM)—A HOOD RIVER, OREGON-BASED COMPANY THAT DESIGNS EASY-TO-USE WATER PURIFICATION SYSTEMS SPECIFICALLY FOR OUTDOOR ENTHUSIASTS—THEIR STORY BEGAN WITH A WIDELY SHARED POST PENNED ON SOCIAL MEDIA.

The post author was Sean “Doogie” Couvreux, a longtime sailor and professional bowman for several racing teams, who was fed up with what he saw as the overuse of one-time plastic water bottles during sailing events, often spotting trash and recycling bins piled high both onshore and onboard. He took his concerns to Facebook in late fall 2017, arguing for the ban of plastic bottles on racing boats, which would effectively force the sport to adapt, change, and lessen its carbon impact. Backing up his argument, World Sailing had at the time recently instituted a policy to suspend the use of yarn and wool on race boats for similar reasons. (Crews would use yarn to keep their spinnakers under control while sails were being hoisted; the yarn would break as the sail started to fill, but then usually just fell into the water as waste.) “The sport quickly found new solutions and now those are way better than when we used to use yarn,” Couvreux explains. “It just took a push with the rules for the sport to innovate and come up with a better idea. My argument with water bottles was the same. Make a rule and the sport will come up with a solution.” Heart icons were double-tapped and share buttons were clicked, his post soon circulating amongst his connections around the world. One of those connections was Tyler Bech, longtime family friend, fellow biking aficionado, and a frequent collaborator with Couvreux on sailing parts development projects. After spotting his pal’s post, he posed a big question in response: What if they developed a way to make it simpler for people to get clean water so no one would bother to buy cases of water ever again? So, they set out to do just that, building their first prototype in 2018 and testing out their initial purifying

systems on the boats racing the Transpac 52 Super Series circuit in Europe. It was a resounding success. “The teams quickly saw the light in being able to use water available at the dock to fill all the water tanks and bottles for a day’s worth of racing” they explain. “Our system is easily carried by one person, and it is fully self-sustainable with its own power source. They didn’t need to bring power cords. A single charge was enough to provide filtered water for several days of use. So the simplicity of our system was very attractive in a fleet that is very logistical intensive.” The product line grew from there, and today, the brand offers two portable options enjoyed by campers, fishing fans, and outdoor enthusiasts, in addition to options built-in at point of use. First is the compact “Spigot” system that connects to the standard hoses found at campgrounds, parks, and marinas and filters water through premium carbon blocking to remove a wide range of chemicals, chlorine, lead, mercury, bacteria, cysts, and microplastics. The powerful, but still totable, “Stream” design can attach to those same hoses, or, pull water from any creek, stream, or lake thanks to the onboard pump, filtering water at an astounding rate of 1.1 gallons per minute. An LED-based UV system working in combination with powerful LiFePO4 lithium batteries allows this high volume treatment system to still fit in a compact case. And then there is the “Stealth” series. These built-in systems are ideal for any vehicle with an on-board, pressurized water tank and can be installed in camper trailers, RVs, and, of course, what inspired it all—boats. The collection is available in three levels of filtration depending on your water needs aboard: carbon block, UV, and both UV and carbon block combined.

The carbon block alone will make water quality improvements that you can both see and taste, removing sediments much like a screen door filters bugs, absorbing chemicals, and improving flavor. The UV method acts as an additional sanitizing step in the process, sterilizing water with UV-C spectrum light and inactivating 99.99% of all microbiological hazards including viruses. Together, they pack a one-two punch to produce super clean and fresh-tasting H20. Also of note for the seafaring set, Guzzle H20 seems to have solved a long-running grievance amongst boaters: The chore of schlepping, carting, and carrying heavy, bulky cases of plastic bottles down the docks every time you’re due for a stock-up. After install, this cumbersome job can be

replaced by a simple turning of the tap. They acknowledge the systems are a long-term investment, ranging from $215 to $750 prior to install, but that “once people see our systems in use, the light bulb switches on, and they can see the logic behind it and quickly become customers.” For Bech and Couvreux, those climbing customer numbers mean fewer plastic pollutants, each system allowing them to chart a course to a more sustainable future— for racing, for the planet, and for Guzzle H20. “The future is very bright…We believe that if we make our systems easy to use and install, customers really will be more willing to use the water that is readily available instead of purchasing it.” We’ll certainly drink to that.

TI GH T L I N E S BY MARK YUASA

Thinking Pink Columnist MARK YUASA gets you ready for the wave of pinks (and some surprising silvers) returning to the region for salmon season. When it comes to salmon, pink and silver are the primary colors of August. Leading off this colorful moment are the more than 2.9 million pink salmon predicted to inundate our marine waterways here shortly. As strange as it may sound, pinks mainly migrate to local streams during odd-numbered years due their brief two-year lifecycle, and around the turn of the 21st century—2001 to be exact—their numbers started to thrive exponentially. The largest return of 10 million occurred in 2009 with subsequent strong returns in 2011, 2013 and 2015. Pinks are the smallest of the salmon species, weighing 3 to 6 pounds and averaging 20 to 25 inches. They can be distinguished by their large dark oval spots on the back and tail fin. The pink run around the Strait of Juan de Fuca, off Neah Bay and Sekiu, and northern and central Puget Sound peaks early to mid-August. In southern Puget Sound you’ll see the bulk of pinks during the last week of August and early September. Oddly enough, pinks are enticed by the color pink since it resembles their main diet of krill or plankton. A small, hot pink, mini squid with tandem 1/0 red barbless hooks; a Gold Star octopus squid or mini squid; or a 3-inch spoon tied 13 to 16 inches behind an 8- or 11-inch white colored dodger or silver flasher works well. Be sure to add scent like Pro-Cure, Mike’s Gel Scent, or Smelly Jelly to your presentation. As for rod and reel, stick to an 8- to 9-foot salmon or trout rod with a level wind or spinning reel. Downriggers are effective since you can dial in the precise depth of where fish are located. Those without the high-tech gear aren’t left out of the game and can attach a 6- to 8-ounce banana-shaped lead weight or trolling diver a few feet ahead of the dodger. Another choice is a pink Buzz Bomb or Point Wilson type jig that you cast away from the boat and let sink about a foot per second. Once you feel the jig go slack, reel up, but don’t jerk hard because pinks have a very soft jawline. 62

Lastly, be sure to troll very SLOW (1.5-2 mph) depending on the current, tide, and wind. In early morning, or just before sunset, pinks can be found from just below the surface to depths of 50 to 100 feet (but never right on the bottom). The fish schools will go deeper on sunny days.Taking care of your catch is vital as the flesh of pinks can become mushy and lose their flavor, especially in the summer heat. Bleed, clean, and gut your catch, and get them on ice right away. And then chrome is the color of choice for anglers heading to the brackish waterway of Lower Columbia mouth at Buoy 10 off the ports of Ilwaco and Astoria. The forecast for coho salmon—commonly referred to as “silvers”— is more than 1.5-million coho and anglers should be aflutter at the thought of the largest return since 2015. The large fishing ground where thousands of boats converge in late summer at Buoy 10 covers about 20 miles from the red buoy marker near the river’s mouth upriver to the Rocky Point-Tongue Point boundary. That fishery is open August 1-10 for hatchery-marked Chinook and hatchery-marked coho only, and then from August 11 to September 6 for all Chinook and hatchery-marked coho. In late August through September, anglers can follow the salmon procession further upstream of Bonneville Dam to the Gorge area, and eventually clear up to Hanford Reach in September and early October. Mark Yuasa is a longtime fishing and outdoor writer. Born and raised in Seattle, and a UW alum, Mark joined the Northwest Marine Trade Association in 2017 as the Director of Grow Boating Programs after 33 years at The Seattle Times. He also volunteers with the BSA Chief Seattle Council and National Order of the Arrow organizations, and enjoys fishing for salmon and other fish species in local waterways.

O N WATCH BY PETER SCHRAPPEN

The Heart of the Issues Columnist PETER SCHRAPPEN outlines the many federal, state, and local boating issues that have crossed his desk this summer. A day doesn’t go by when someone doesn’t ask me, “Hey Pete, what are you working on?” It’s a great question, and the answer is that it’s ever evolving. In case you find yourself wondering how I advocate for boaters and boating businesses, this is the column for you. Here’s a rundown on federal, state, and local issues that have come across my government affairs transom in recent weeks this summer. FEDERAL CBP dispute about cruising licenses that have expired while in Southeast Alaska: The Customs & Border Protection (CBP) office in Southeast Alaska was requiring vessels that had expiring cruising permits to venture to the next nearest foreign port to clear customs before they could enter back into Alaska. Given that Canada is closed to recreational vessels, the next nearest foreign port was Mexico. After contacting the legislative director for U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan (Alaska-Republican) and the CBP office at SeaTac Airport, CBP changed their policy and will now allow vessels to use a form 1300 to renew their licenses. We’ll count that as a win. National Marine Fisheries Service issue impacting existing marine facilities: Northwest Marine Trade Association and Recreational Boating Association of Washington (RBAW) continue to slog away at this issue, which impacts any marina in Puget Sound. The NMFS is calculating high mitigation costs for marina upgrades and replacements. If you are wondering why I get grumpy, then look no further than this issue. Any time a marina needs a permit from the Army Corps and NMFS, expect that project to get bottlenecked. Yes, this is the same issue that’s been going since March 2018. STATE Release of the Boatyard Permit: Department of Ecology made news by delaying the release of this five-year permit. They are looking at a three-month delay because “We (Ecology) received substantial comments during the public comment period. We anticipate we will need additional time to consider and respond to these comments and make appropriate revisions to the final permit. As a result, when the current permit expires July 31, 2021, there will be at least three months before the new general permit is issued and becomes effective.” In the meantime, the previous permit is in effect. 66

COUNTY Wakesurfing: Both Clallam and Snohomish Counties are looking at the future of wakesurfing on their county-administered lakes. Boaters and anti-boaters in Clallam County are using an arbitrator to determine what the future of wakesurfing looks like for Lake Sutherland. As for Snohomish County, they have hosted five community meetings to discuss the future of boating on Flowing Lake, Lake Roesiger, Lake Shoecraft, and Lake Goodwin. Stay tuned on this one as it’s a work in progress. CITY Montlake Bridge: In March of this year, NMTA and RBAW uncovered a proposed plan to limit Montlake Bridge openings to only twice daily during August as opposed to the regular on-call process. We felt this limitation could have significant safety and operational impacts to recreational boating and jumped into action with WSDOT to negotiate an alternate plan to better accommodate boaters while ensuring bridge construction could continue. As for what will change: From August 9 through September 2, there will now be single span openings of the Montlake Bridge. Andrews Bay: This one is a biggie for boaters. Again, the RBAW and NMTA have partnered (are you catching the theme here?) to educate boaters about how precious this boating and anchorage spot is within Lake Washington. Unfortunately, a handful of misbehaving boaters are creating undue noise and rowdy behavior. Before the city of Seattle bans boating in this cove, boating ambassadors are asking all boaters in this area to fill out a pledge card to act responsibly. Expect to see boaters patrolling the waters and serving in an ambassador capacity as we approach this issue in a peer (boater) to peer (boater) manner. (For more information on taking the pledge yourself, please visit tinyurl.com/ PledgeForAndrewsBay.) As the great baseball announcer Mel Allen would say, “How about that?” (Seriously, how about that? Feel free to drop me a line and let me know what you think: peter@nmta.net.) Peter Schrappen is Northwest Marine Trade Association’s Government Affairs Director and the Clean Boating Foundation’s Executive Director. Additionally, he serves on the boards of the Boating Safety Advisory Council, Washington Boating Alliance, and U.S. Superyacht Association.

ASK NI G E L—A B OA R D Zvi BY NIGEL BARRON

California, Here We Come NIGEL BARRON recounts the “practice run” that was the delivery of Zvi to Los Angeles in anticipation of the July 17th start of Transpac 2021. Step one of the Transpac triangle: The trip from Seattle to Los Angeles. On paper, it’s pretty simple—leave Seattle, make three left turns and you’re in Los Angeles. Of course, we all know things are never that simple. As we got closer to our planned June 18th departure, it became clear that we would take a beating in the Strait of Juan de Fuca from Port Angeles to Seiku. The decision was made to push the departure to 4 a.m. on Saturday, June 19th. We left the slip around 4:15 a.m. and started motoring north. By sundown on Saturday, we exited the strait into a fog bank. We did not see the sun for the next five days. As with any trip offshore, the first few days are the hardest as people adjust to life at sea. We’d planned for this with each day’s food in a numbered bag. Early in the trip, the food bags consist of lighter meals, snacks, fruit chews—things that are easy on an unsettled stomach. The weather didn’t help. As we got into the first night, we were seeing pretty steady winds of 15-25 knots from the northwest. The angles were nice for a downwind trip, but the total darkness was tough on the new guys who hadn’t been offshore. Driving by instruments only, without moon or stars and total cloud cover, taxes the mind. You need confidence in the instruments, as well as what your body feels. Our weather routing was provided by Roger “Clouds” Badham, who has participated in every America’s Cup since 1983. The plan didn’t change too much as we got closer to the departure and even during the trip. Go offshore for better wind, come inshore for less wind and a motor. We opted for the offshore route. By the time we were in northern California, we were around 100 miles off the coast and ended up a maximum of 160 miles off the coast. By the third day, everyone was starting to feel a lot better with enough watches under their belts to get caught up on sleep. Eight people sailed this leg. We ran two watches of four people on a 4-4-4-6-6 watch schedule, 68

in terms of hours on and off. Basically, we ran three watches at night and then two longer watches in the daylight. The normalizing of conditions also allowed me to ramp up communications with our shore team. This was the last big shakedown of the boat and systems. We had a new custom alternator from Mark Grasser at DC Power Solutions that we needed to test under real life conditions. This alternator puts out 185 amps attached to our little 75hp Yanmar. We started making water with our Spectra watermaker to check amp draws and production. It worked well, but we discovered at over 16 knots of boat speed the watermaker struggles a little bit with aeration. Without question, the highlight of the trip has to be the last day where we came through the Santa Barbara Channel with 26 knots of boat speed in steady 32- to 37-knot winds. We flew, but under control. By the time we were near Malibu, we had taken the main down so we could get that done while there was still some light and settled in to motor the rest of the way to Los Angeles. The trip validated the many hours so many people have contributed to make racing to Hawaii possible. I head back down July 9th to load our shipping container, and our start for Transpac is July 17th. >> Nigel will give us his account of the race to Hawaii in next month’s column, but for those who just can’t wait, real-time Transpac race results can be found transpacyc.com. Nigel Barron was born in England and developed his sea legs at an early age. He is currently the project manager at CSR Marine in Seattle, where he has worked for 15 years, first as a rigger, then an installer, and now in his current role. Last month, he took part in the Transpac 2021 race captaining Zvi, a Reichel/Pugh design and McConaghy-built custom race boat from Seattle.

R AC I N G SH E E T BY DOUG HANSEN

Bittersweet Return Columnist DOUG HANSEN recounts Race Week and reflects on the tragic loss of one of our own, sailor Greg Mueller. After a year and a half of uncertainty surrounding racing events, it was finally announced that Race Week Pacific Northwest (previously known as Whidbey Island Race Week) was indeed on for late June and had moved to Anacortes. The five-day event invited all manner of keel boats to the waters off Guemes Island. The community responded with enthusiasm as 68 boats signed up and were ready to race after a long absence from competition. The week would not have the normal shoreside festivities, but it was going to be a week of sailboat racing in a great town with great people, and that is all we have ever wanted. Monday morning racing kicked off with a beautiful northwesterly wind and some seriously flowing current mixing everything up. Shifting breeze and swirling current made for a total reset of what we were expecting. With only one racecourse to choose from due to limitations set forth in the sailing instructions, we buzzed around the course having barely enough time to get the spinnaker ready for the next rounding and downwind leg, while other fleets were converging at marks that made for some stressful moments as dramatically faster boats overtook packs of smaller fleets. Back on the dock, it was all smiles as friends began to reconnect and all the tall tales began to be told about the day’s racing. Upon returning to the marina Tuesday afternoon, sailors began to learn the very sad news that a fellow competitor, Greg Mueller, lost his life on the racecourse during that day’s sailing. He was knocked overboard in an accident during a downwind leg. Greg was a regular face in the sailing community, and his loss is felt deeply throughout our sport. Onboard our boat we discussed what we knew about the events leading to the accident and the potential reality that is always present whenever we are out on the

water, even for the most experienced sailors. While we continue to reflect and learn from this tragedy, we are keeping Greg’s family and friends in our thoughts. (See box for a note from our entire NWY team.) Wednesday was a much lower key as the wind held off in the morning, but eventually, the it began to settle in and flow into the bay from the southwest. Sails went up and we were off to the races in a steadily building breeze and beautiful flat water. Thanks to an updated racecourse by the committee, there were now two weather marks and two leeward marks to choose from and this allowed the fleets to be spread out. It was picture perfect sailing into a beautiful afternoon. On Thursday, a series of courses were set and the big boats in the ORC and PHRF 0 fleets were sent northward to Lummi Rocks, while the other fleets set into the familiar two lap buoy format from the days prior. The steady breeze built into the afternoon and all fleets sailed two races before heading for the dock. Unfortunately, due to the time limits posted in the sailing instructions that kept all races to ninety minutes, several fleets’ races for the day were thrown out, leaving many racers frustrated. Friday brought out the big guns with a wind forecast topping into the twenties and tight racing in all the fleets. With three-way ties for first in several fleets, it was now or never to take home a win. Fleets took in two heavy air short course races, with boats fully powered up downwind, surfing through the fleets still heading upwind with huge smiles and the occasional raised voice. After a week of solid racing, it was a full-on crescendo to bring things home. Wrapping things up after some high intensity races and all the emotion that came with Mueller’s passing, it was a fitting end to this week of sailing in the Pacific Northwest.

Eight Bells: Greg Mueller We here at NWY would like to extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family and friends of Greg Mueller, who passed away on Tuesday, June 24, following the accident that occurred during Race Week 2021 in Anacortes. He was 58. A longtime member of the Washington Yacht Club, Mueller was an avid racer and frequently participated in races throughout the Seattle area. “He was great about including other people,” Raz Barnea, a Washington Yacht Club friend said in The Seattle Times piece. “The club really places emphasis on students who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to sail, and Greg helped a lot of people get their sea legs.” We are saddened to have lost this valued member of our community. It’s all just waiting for you on this eight-day journey through the myriad islands of this Mediterranean nation, now open to tourists once again. Day 1 – Athens Begin your journey in Athens. Take time to see the iconic Parthenon and Acropolis before boarding your private yacht for an evening of rest and relaxation. After enjoying an exquisite meal prepared by your own personal chef, head to back shore where you can experience the seemingly never-ending nightlife. Day 2 – Tzia (Kea) Wake up to views of pristine beaches adorning the coast. Relish in the beauty of the rolling hills beyond. Let your doting crew pamper you with a decadent breakfast before journeying to Pisses Beach. There, spend the afternoon in the

water with all the toys you can imagine—glide through the water on a hydrofoil or dart through the waves on a jet ski, all the while soaking in the sun. Day 3 – Syros Continue your journey in Syros, just 78 nautical miles from Athens. The capital city of Ermoupoli dates back to the 1820s. Appreciate the calm and quiet harbor as you marvel in the beauty of the colorful mansions, neoclassical architecture, and white buildings lining the mountainside. Enjoy breakfast at a quaint café on the hillside before returning to your yacht. Day 4 – Delos & Mykonos Before stopping at the incredibly popular and world-renowned destination of Mykonos, take time to cruise to Delos. Although it is one of the smallest islands in the Aegean, it is packed with historical archaeological sites and considered a legendary location within Greek mythology. After being awed by the massive white statues and magnificent mosaics in Delos, head to the bright coastal town of Mykonos. From dawn to dusk, you’ll spend your time on the bustling beaches listening to the loud music radiating from the nearby nightclubs.

Day 5 – Paros With their distinctly vivid blue doorways, the signature white buildings here will catch your eye from afar. Located in the heart of the Aegean Sea, Paros is a bustling cosmopolitan village. Experience the local flavor at a restaurant in Naoussa, where you can watch boats of all types and sizes pass through the small fishing harbor. Thrill seekers can spend the afternoon windsurfing or kite surfing on New Golden Beach where you are sure to be blown away by the beautiful sights.

Return to Athens, taking in the jaw dropping landscapes, vibrant island colors, and endless blue sky on the journey. With an abundance of amazing attractions, this country caters to travelers of all types from history enthusiast and nature lovers to adventure seekers and cosmopolitan elite. Begin planning your glamourous Greek vacation onboard a private yacht now.

Day 6 – Santorini Explore the volcanic sand beaches and natural rock formations of the Caldera in Santorini, the stunning topography is a reminder of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in history. Spend your day onboard sunbathing on the deck or swimming in the cool and refreshing ocean, all while taking in the exquisite scenery and the breathtaking sunsets for which the island is known. Head to Oia, on the northwest tip of the end, to appreciate the red- and pink-tinged sunset moment in all its glory, the town coming to a collective stop as all eyes are on the horizon. Day 7 – Milos If crystal blue turquoise waters are what you seek, look no further than Polýaigos, an uninhabited island where the white cliffs lining the coast are scattered with mystical caves, unique landscapes, and wild goats (its name, in fact, means “many goats”). A short jaunt away is Milos, where you should take an exploration ashore through the winding catacombs that lead to the ancient Theatre of Milos and sit on one of the many tiers of marble seats facing the harbor beyond. Day 8 – Sifnos Conclude your epic itinerary in Sifnos, an exquisite island with a robust culinary scene. Spend your day on a secluded beach where you’ll enjoy a hearty picnic on the soft sand. Work up an appetite as you swim and snorkel along the hidden beaches. Before leaving Sifnos, taste the local favorites at one of the acclaimed restaurants. (A true and authentic produce-laden Greek salad is not to be missed.)

Support local and regional programs for children and young adults through the charitable donation of your boat. The Pacific Marine Foundation is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization funding regional programs such as Northwest Youth Services, Sea Scouts, Boys & Girls Clubs, and local public school education foundations. A substantial tax savings and the possibility of a partial cash sale makes a charitable donation a very attractive alternative for any owner who is considering selling their well-found power or sailing yacht.
