WOMEN IN MARITIME By Richard Arlin Walker Women have long been involved in maritime, but the fight for equal treatment and equal opportunity from deck to pilothouse has been a hard battle. The fight goes on, but slowly more women are taking the helm of some of the region’s most important marine strongholds.

THE 36TH AMERICA’S CUP IN NEW ZEALAND By Doug Hansen The America’s Cup is the world’s oldest sporting trophy, and Team New Zealand takes on its challengers on their home turf in the Hauraki Gulf in March 2021. Key changes in this cycle’s rules have resulted in some of the most radical boats the sailing world has ever seen. Flying monohulls is the name of the game, and with boat speeds in the 40-knot range, they are more like flying machines than boats.

Seattle Boat Show Reimagined for Digital Age Ongoing COVID-19 restrictions have curtailed many events in the Northwest and forced many in the boating industry to adopt more socially distanced communications with customers. The Seattle Boat Show is no different, with a completely new digital format planned for Jan. 28-31, 2021. Events will no longer be held in person, but organizers for the 2021 show have created a virtual format that will allow attendees to “walk” among the wide boat selections and marine accessories using three-dimensional technology. The digital show will also give people the ability to enjoy discounts and show specials that would have been offered at the in person show. The new Seattle show will be able to connect attendees with exhibitors in a variety of ways, including an appointment-setting tool that enables the scheduling of one-on-one video meetings, via Zoom or FaceTime, or the arrangement of phone meetings, live-text chats, and product tours. The 3D show floor will feature a digital “red carpet,” simulating the feel of strolling the aisles of conventional boat shows. The show will also include satellite special events, hosted by dealers and exhibitors around the region, as well as its usual lineup of fascinating, in-depth seminars. More than 100 hours of original boating, fishing, boating-lifestyle and Boat Show University seminars will be offered, as well as a live video stream, featuring interviews with special guests, seminar presenters, exhibitors and sponsors. “Interest and demand for boats and accessories are at an all-time high right now, and many industry experts are predicting an even bigger year in 2021,” said George Harris, president of the Northwest Marine Trade Association. “If people wait until next spring to go boat shopping, it may be too late.” Tickets for the Seattle Boat Show will go on sale Dec. 15, which is also the date when the seminar schedule will be released online. The exhibitor list, boats and products, appointment scheduling, and calendar of events will be available Jan. 1, 2021. For more information on what to expect with this new digital experience, visit seattleboatshow.com.

Gallons App Helps Boaters Get Cash Back on Gas A new app, released to Washington state boaters last month, allows boaters to receive up to 30 cents back for every gallon of fuel each time they fill their tanks. Now available on all iOS and Android phones, the Gallons app enables customers to file for the refund automatically by downloading an image of their gas receipt. In essence, the app covers Washington’s road tax on all purchases of gasoline and non-dyed diesel in the state, including fuel sold at marinas and gas stations. With Gallons, boat owners can reclaim this tax when the fuel is being used for boating and other off-road purposes. The app then charges a 20% fee for the convenience once the refund is paid. Once an image of a receipt is uploaded, consumers can choose the equipment for which the fuel is being used and submit it through a streamlined interface, which then sends the refund to their accounts. Gallons also helps consumers manage their fuel receipts and retain them for the required five years under state law. The app’s creator, Rylan Hawkins, a longtime boater in Puget Sound, said he is excited to help boaters tap into a resource that has been difficult to access for many years, especially for those who are not aware of the road tax. Gallons can also be used to recoup funds paid for other off-road equipment, such as farming and landscaping equipment, when used in an unlicensed vehicle or other machinery. Dyed diesel, however, is untaxed and not eligible for the road tax refund. 16

Nautical News U.S. Sailing Expands Training for Changing 2021 Events Due to recent cancellations of several sailing championships in 2021 and 2022, U.S. Sailing is planning an expansion of its training schedule next year. With support from the America One Foundation and Quantum Racing, the updated schedule of clinics and regattas will be released in early 2021. In late September, World Sailing announced that the Royal Netherlands Watersport Association, the municipality of The Hague and TIG Sports moved the 2022 Sailing World Championships to the summer of 2023, citing concerns about the Covid-19 pandemic and the movement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games to 2021. The Youth Sailing World Championships, originally planned for The Hague in July 2021, were also rescheduled for the summer of 2022. “Over the years we have learned that we achieve our best when the sailors, coaches, clubs, class associations, and U.S. Sailing are all working together,” said Leandro Spina, director of Olympic development for U.S. Sailing. “We are disappointed that the Youth Worlds will not take place this July, but we are lucky to have other major domestic regattas to look forward to.” World Sailing is now seeking a venue to host the 2021 Youth Sailing World Championships. When the venue and dates have been announced for the event, U.S. Sailing said it will release the qualification process details to the domestic sailing community. World Sailing also cancelled the 2020 Youth Sailing World Championships that were scheduled December 12-19 in Salvador, Brazil, due to COVID-19. For more information on the ever-shifting event changes, please visit sailing.org/news and see the full announcement from World Sailing.

Nautical News Race Week Set for Anacortes in 2021 In a recent response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Race Week has changed venues yet again for the 2021 season. Whidbey Island Race Week LLC, the organizing authority of the event, decided in October to move the race from Point Roberts, Washington, to Anacortes, Washington, on the northern end of Fidalgo Island. The 5-day sailboat racing event, which had been canceled this year due to coronavirus concerns, has been rescheduled for June 21-25, 2021, and will take place at the Port of Anacortes’ Cap Sante Marina. The event has been rebranded as Race Week Pacific Northwest (PNW). This venue switch to Anacortes is the second switch made in the last year and a half for the race. In March 2019, organizers decided the event would change venues to Point Roberts, beginning in 2020, after a 37-year run in Whidbey Island’s Oak Harbor. A title sponsor was procured through the Point Roberts Marina, owned by Chen Yihong of DX Sport, who signed a 3-year Title Sponsorship contract. Whidbey Island Race Week was then rebranded as Point Roberts Race Week. However, as the Point Roberts Race Week 2020 was preparing to host the 6 Metre North American Championships, the Corsair Nationals, and award the coveted Pacific Coast Yachting

Association’s Jesse L. Carr Perpetual Captain and Crew Trophy, the COVID pandemic’s social-distancing protocols halted almost all large public events last summer, including Race Week. Point Roberts was eventually dropped due to its unique location on the southern end of a peninsula extending south from Canada that required problematic travel logistics. A journey to the Washington state enclave requires two border crossings, but the borders between the two countries remain closed because of COVID. “Anacortes offers excellent racing areas and ample guest moorage in the Cap Sante Marina to accommodate the fleet, and shoreside amenities, including restaurants, grocery stores, and an RV campground,” said Schelleen Rathkopf, event producer. The Race Management Team includes Rathkopf, along with John Abel, Principal Race Officer; Paul Evenden, Race Officer; and Jared Hickman, Chief Judge. The regatta is currently open to keelboats and multihulls 19’+ racing PHRF, ORC, or in a (NFS) Cruising Class, but a dinghy component may be considered. For more information on the event, see Race WeekPNW.com. Registration is set to open on Jan. 1, 2021.

Nautical News Bellingham Secures Grant for Waterfront Upgrades The Port of Bellingham in Washington state has been awarded a $6.85 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP) to upgrade the Bellingham Shipping Terminal. The funds will help increase trade and commerce, and restore working waterfront jobs, said the port’s executive director, Rob Fix. “The grant funding will allow us to modernize our shipping terminal to accommodate a much wider range of vessels and cargo and offer a viable shipping alternative to the crowded Canadian ports just north of Whatcom County,” Fix said. “Increasing trade and commerce at the Bellingham Shipping Terminal will create working waterfront, family-wage jobs and support statewide, Covid-19-related economic recovery efforts.” Whatcom County Executive Satpal Sidhu, who supported the grant application, said the port upgrades will make Bellingham more competitive and “create business opportunities which did not exist before.” One of the most innovative use of the PIDP grant funds will be the rehabilitation of a barge-loading facility to accommodate increasing customer demand for the domestic coast and cross-sound transportation of cargo. “Barging is a cost-efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to transport by truck and rail,” said Chris Clark, the port’s marine terminals business development manager. “Having a barge loading and unloading facility with plenty of upland support area is a key market differentiator for the Port of Bellingham.” PIDP funds will also be used to reinforce the shipping terminal’s heavy-load receiving area at the main berth, allowing a wider range of cargo. In addition, the grant will be used to remove navigation high spots, which have accumulated in front of the terminal, allowing deeper-draft vessels to tie up safely.

Nautical News The Quiver Creates Board Sharing Bonanza For surfing aficionados who can’t afford the growing costs of transporting cumbersome surfboards to remote beaches around the world, a new online platform called The Quiver allows surfers to rent a wide variety of boards at surfing meccas. With a business model similar to that of Airbnb, The Quiver connects board owners to everyday surfers worldwide, creating an online community and marketplace, where surfers can browse through hundreds of boards and reserve them in minutes. The service currently includes such well-known brands as Album, Campbell Brothers, Channel Islands, Lost and Pyzel, among others. The site also includes surfing tips and recommendations, as well as links to popular surfing destinations where boards are readily available. In its five years of existence, The Quiver community has expanded to 20 countries so far. “We’re a two-sided marketplace connecting surfers with surfboards on demand,” said Joe Wilson, CEO of The Quiver. “Surfers can make money renting out their boards to others. Our mission is to make surfboards more accessible and to bring people together.”

24

Wilson, a dedicated surfer for more than 20 years, came up with the idea after too many bad experiences lugging his boards to various locales and subjecting them to damage in transport. “I’ve arrived at a destination with a bag of broken boards, which cost more to transport than the price of my own seat,” he said. After teaming up with fellow surfer Rob Bonvetti, the two entrepreneurs co-founded The Quiver in 2015 to reduce potential damage to boards and give customers a chance to make money off of boards that they weren’t using. Today, The Quiver – named after a surfing term for the collection of different boards each surfer owns – boasts a community of thousands of like-minded surfers. With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Quiver has adapted well as people search for active recreation that keeps them away from large crowds. “Surfing has always been a socially distant sport,” Wilson said. “In fact, when you find waves without anyone else in the water, it can be the most memorable and best sessions.”

2021 NIMBUS 405 COUPE There’s a reason why the world-renowned Nimbus Boats Sweden has won multiple awards throughout the years, including the European Power Boat of the Year. The 405 Coupe is the flagship model for Nimbus, and since 1969, more than 4,000 Coupes have been sold worldwide. Over the years, the Scandinavian builder has perfected the design, the details, and the experience on the 405 Coupe, creating a boat perfect for the owner that loves to spend time on the water for days or even weeks at a time. The Nimbus 405 Coupe is designed with three luxurious cabins, including a spacious master with its own en suite bathroom. The main salon has the traditional open Scandinavian floor design, it features exceptionally large windows that let an abundance of natural light flow into the interior, giving a sense of spaciousness not 32

often found in yachts this size. The wood fittings and special lighting, combined with the sleek and beautiful lines, creates a living space that is stylish and functional and delivers unsurpassed comfort for all on board. The large U-shaped couch in the main salon seats up to eight guests, and the dining table can be collapsed to open up the space. Nimbus designed the 405 Coupe with their patented asymmetrical Side-Walk deck layout, which makes the starboard side of the yacht extra wide, giving everyone on board more space to move around. This unique design improves the overall experience from both a functional and aesthetic standpoint, and makes it easier to move from the bow to stern with this wider deck space, and also makes it easier to get on and off the boat along the entire starboard side, especially when loading or removing gear.

Other special features include an integrated sunbed on the foredeck, twin touch screens at the helm, room for five to ride facing front, a new D-pillar with integrated ventilation, wholly glazed aft deck door, electric powered table on the aft deck, and a “granny hatch” that conceals a mains power plug on the stern. Nimbus has also designed new engine room ventilation in the hull sides with powered extractors, galley with ceramic gas hob and dark composite worktop, 120-liter capacity fridge, plus extra cool storage in pull-out drawers beneath the salon sofa and much more. “We would never build a boat that is not considered practical in her natural element,” shares Joacim Gustavsson, head designer at Nimbus

Boats Sweden AB. “Although we always try to make her as beautiful as possible, it is a balancing act. It’s always easier to design beautiful lines if you don’t need to take functionality into account. Our customers are very conscious, and they appreciate our designs because they understand that we build crafts that are actually used at sea and not only look good in pictures. That is the secret of our success.” The superior quality of a Nimbus Boat is recognizable the minute you step on board. The Swedish manufacturer believes in sparing no expense to achieve the comfort, style, and level of safety that is expected by a discerning owner. Seattle Yachts is the official Nimbus Boats dealer in Florida, California, and the Pacific Northwest. 33

Women have long been involved in maritime, but the fight for equal treatment and equal opportunity from deck to pilothouse is a hard battle from which the smoke has yet to clear. The battle for full acceptance for women mariners “is not past tense,” said Capt. Deborah Doane Dempsey, a retired unlimited oceans master and Columbia River Bar pilot. Dempsey graduated in 1976 from Maine Maritime Academy – the first woman to graduate from any state maritime academy in the U.S. More than 40 years later: • Women represent only 2 percent of the world’s 1.2 million seafarers, according to the International Maritime Organization. • Most female seafarers work in the cruise industry, about 94 percent, according to the International Maritime Organization. • Only 3 percent of the nation’s 2,000 ship pilots are women and Puget Sound Pilots admitted its first, and to date only, female member in 2018. • Washington State Ferries Port Captain Beth Stowell recalled in a TV interview that in the 1980s the only jobs in WSF that were available to women were cleaning restrooms. “They weren’t allowed to be deckhands or captains or officers,” Stowell told KING 5 News. When the story aired on March 31, 2016, Stowell was still the only female port captain in the nation’s largest ferry system. • Some 158 of WSF’s 999 mariners in engine and deck are women, WSF public information officer Bryn Vander Stoep reported on Nov. 10. • Among WSF’s deck crew, there are 209 ordinary seamen, 252 able seamen, 86 mates and 68 captains. Of those, 76 ordinary seamen, 51 able seamen. • 14 mates and three captains are women, Vander Stoep reported. While progress has been slow, the industry is changing. An increasing number of mariners are trained in leadership and management, and more women are attaining top positions in the industry. Today, women direct port districts in Washington state, command merchant vessels and fleets, and pilot ships in Southeast Alaska, the Salish Sea, and in Puget Sound waters. They are leading maritime training 48

schools and maritime unions. Washington State Ferries’ top managers are women: Amy Scarton, director of WSF and an assistant state transportation secretary, is a former U.S. deputy assistant secretary of transportation. Nicole McIntosh is chief of staff for WSF, and was previously the ferry system’s chief of terminal engineering. “It’s definitely male-dominated,” Dempsey said of the maritime industry, “but when you’re determined and you find your niche, nothing can stop you.” Several female mariners interviewed for this story say women like Dempsey blazed the trail for them, but defying the norms came with a price. Dempsey obtained a chemistry degree from University of Vermont and was delivering yachts when a Maine Maritime alum suggested she apply to the academy and pursue her career passion in maritime. Title IX, which bars exclusion in educational programs because of gender, had just become federal law in 1972. Dempsey applied at Maine Maritime and was accepted. “When you’re in the position of being amongst the first, it can open doors for others,” Dempsey said. “But it can also be a burden.” She was spat upon at morning formation, and rocks were thrown through her windows. It took six months before her professors looked her in the eye. A newspaper incorrectly reported on its sports page that Dempsey, who had played field hockey and skied for University of Vermont, was starting a cheerleading squad for Maine Maritime. There was no excuse for the harsh and sexist treatment she received her first year at Maine Maritime, but resistance to change was no match for her professionalism and steadfastness. Ruled ineligible by the NCAA to compete on Maine Maritime’s sailing team (because of her time as an athlete at University of Vermont), she took care of the sailing team’s boats. She tutored cadets in math. She asked a local bosun to teach her to wire splice and spent her winters working on a scallop dragger in Penobscot Bay. “What seals it is proving yourself, doing well and loving it,” she said. “Eventually, all administration and all professors were behind me 100 percent.” In her ensuing career, Dempsey worked as a mate for Exxon and Lykes, became the first U.S. woman to command a cargo ship on international voyages, received a letter of commendation from President Clinton for saving a ship that was drifting toward shoals off North Carolina’s Cape Fear, and received the U.S. Navy Meritorious Public Service Award for service as captain of a merchant vessel assisting the U.S. military in the Persian Gulf War. She is also the first woman to serve as a marine pilot on the Columbia River

WOMEN IN MARITIME BY RICHARD ARLIN WALKER

49

Women mariners have rewarding careers in the pilothouse and on deck. From L to R: Jill F. Russell, docking Crystal Symphony in Alaska in 2018. Laura McCormack, a third mate for Maersk, pauses for a photo in Antarctica during Operation Deep Freeze. Elizabeth A. Strunk served as a chief mate with Military Sealift Command. (Photos: International Maritime Organization)

“THE DAY THAT I CAN RUN A SHIP AND NO ONE COMMENTS ON MY GENDER, THAT’S WHEN I’LL KNOW THAT WE’VE MADE IT.” CAPT. JILL F. RUSSELL, CHAIRWOMAN, PILOTING OPPORTUNITIES IN PUGET SOUND COMMITTEE, MARINE PILOT IN SOUTHEAST ALASKA

Bar, considered the most dangerous entrance to a major commercial waterway in the world. Now retired, Dempsey volunteers at the Bellingham Bay Community Boating Center, which she founded. Her advice to women seeking careers in maritime: Seek out a mentor and never stop learning. “Everybody’s got knowledge they can share with you,” Dempsey said. “Learn on deck from the unlicensed crewmembers and the bosun. Learn from the chief mate and the captain all they have to do, such as figuring out the cargo layout, stability, navigation, doing star fixes and noon latitude, laying out courses and charts.” Capt. Sandy Bendixen of Everett is the first (and currently only) female member of Puget Sound Pilots. “From its conception, the maritime industry has been mentor based,” she said. “You start out at a junior position and you’re trained by people to take that next position. You can’t become a captain overnight.” Bendixen said attending a maritime academy is the fastest route to the pilothouse. She received a bachelor of science degree and a third mate’s license upon graduation from Maine Maritime and was an unlimited oceans master by age 28. She became a marine pilot at 36, a feat that required drawing every Puget Sound navigational chart from memory. The other option is to advance “through the hawsepipe,” a term meaning working your way up from ordinary seaman and, upon acquiring the required sea time, taking the exams necessary to obtain a license as a mate or master. A hawsepipe is an inclined pipe in the bow of the ship that the anchor chain passes through. Regardless of gender, part of being a successful mariner is 50

knowing how to get along with others. “When you first sign on a ship, it’s like tryouts,” Bendixen said. “You’ve got to see what they’re worth; you’ve got to see that they can do the job. Are they going to be able to help us fight this fire? Are you going to be able to help pull this person out of the engine room or pull somebody out of a tank when they collapse or help us deal with the flooding that’s happening, or whatever emergency, because we’re all alone out here and we only have each other.” She added, “I will say that the people on your ship are your family. They care about you so much because you’re with them six months of the year and they’re so dependent on you. It’s a tight group of people and they will always have your back.” It helps to have a thick skin and a sense of humor. “As you know, any new mate, male or female, is going to be tested by the crew,” Dempsey said. Once, as a cadet, she was told to go get the skyhook -- there is no such thing. Another time, while pulling into drydock in Mobile, Alabama, a captain was heard telling a cadet to “go down and get the draft,” an order akin to “go get the relative bearing grease.” “You start off and they’re already laughing and, you know, they’re not making fun of you — every cadet went through that,” Dempsey said. “Having a sense of humor anywhere, anytime, will carry you far. Don’t take yourself too seriously.” However, there is no place for lack of respect. Dempsey recalled when a pilot came aboard a ship she was commanding. He said to her, “I don’t know what to call you.” “I asked him, ‘Well, what do you call the other captains?’,” she recalled. “He said, ‘I call them captain,’ and I said, ‘OK, that’ll do.’”

Julie Keim, co-founder and owner of Compass Courses Maritime Training in Edmonds, said resistance to women in maritime is related to: one, men aren’t used to women being in positions of leadership; and two, with change comes responsibility. “Mariners have changed in the last 20 years, where they used to just be boat drivers but now they have to deal with all the paperwork and regulations and personnel on board, and then you have the dynamics of a woman on board,” she said. “Guys aren’t used to women on board. The dynamics change. But there’s nothing you can do about it except how you adapt to it, and some guys aren’t.” She added, “There also companies out there known for not hiring women because they don’t want the dynamics to change. They don’t want to have to deal with the personnel issues, when really, all I can do is sit back and go, ‘Wow, all that woman mariner wants to do is her job’.” Michelle Zeasman-Gibbon grew up powerboating in the Pacific Northwest and has been associated with the maritime industry all of her life. As publisher of Northwest Yachting magazine, she sees a growing number of women working in a wide array of maritime jobs. “Sure, it’s a male-dominated industry, but more and more women are making their way,” she said. “Women are working as yacht brokers, in the charter business, as captains and electricians. We have a woman

at the helm as managing editor who also produces Race Week, the region’s largest sailboat regatta.” Capt. Jill Russell, a marine pilot in Southeast Alaska and co-founder of Compass Courses Maritime Training, encourages women mariners to explore the resources that are out there. Organizations like Sea Sisters (SeaSisters.org) provides peer-to-peer mentorship, and the Women Offshore Foundation (womenoffshore.org) works for diversity in the maritime industry. Keim and Russell said the maritime culture will continue to change as women in leadership positions in and out of maritime become the norm. As this story was being written, U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris was elected Vice President of the United States — the first woman and the first Black and Asian American elected to the second-highest office in the nation. Russell concluded, “The day I can run a ship and no one comments on my gender, that’s when I’ll know we’ve made it.” Women in Maritime continued on Page 76

THE 36TH AMERICA’S CUP At the pinnacle of the sailboat racing is the America’s Cup, which shines as the ultimate test of a racing crew’s prowess and an owner’s pocketbook. With names like Vanderbilt, Sears, Koche, and Ellison on the Auld Mug, “The Cup” has never been every man’s game. However, no one can doubt the enthralling nature of the world’s oldest sporting trophy, its history, determination of the skippers, and of course, the controversy and politics. It has long been said that if the America’s Cup was about sailboat racing, they would do it in Lasers (not in the AC75 racing yachts), and this cycle of the series is bringing home that statement. This time around, we see Team New Zealand inviting challengers to their home waters in the Hauraki Gulf after winning the cup,

NEW from Larry Ellison’s Oracle Racing in Bermuda, using their ingenious peddle-driven foiling catamaran. Key changes in this cycle’s rules have resulted in some of the most radical boats the sailing world has ever seen. Flying monohulls is the name of the game, and with boat speeds in the 40-knot range, they are more like flying machines than boats. Lining up against the Kiwis are Italy’s Luna Rosa, American Magic flying the New York Yacht Club burgee, and INEOS Team UK (with former Olympian and America’s Cup tactician Ben Ainslie at the helm). The teams have been training in their home countries for the past three years, striving to push their boats to the limits of what is physically possible for a wind-powered machine. This new gener-

ZEALAND ation of boat is a leap of faith, taking what was before a completely unfounded design concept and incorporating it into racing rules before a prototype had ever been built. To the surprise of many, the smug engineers at each team saw their creations take shape in numerous test mules and conceptual prototypes until the first of their two boats were permitted to splash into the water last March. By far, the biggest shake up has been the cancellation of all the lead-up events that were scheduled to take place throughout the world over the past year. Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, teams have missed out on the valuable data and knowledge that only actual racing brings. At this point, no two teams have lined up against one another to see whose concept is working better

and to understand what changes might give them an edge over the competition. This is amplified by the truncated event schedule, and the timeline needing to be pushed ahead as the teams launch their second boats. This is a process that involves hundreds of hours of analysis from racing a first-generation boat, but now teams only have the data they can collect on themselves. The differences in design are staggering, with dramatically different concepts being put to the test. Additionally, the event has shrunk considerably with no shoreside race village or international youth events due to the country’s strict travel restrictions. Things are pushing forward for the main teams, however. Essential team members are trickling

NEW ZEALAND

into the island nation, but with all members required to take a two-week quarantine before being allowed to work at the team bases in Auckland. Of course, it would not be “The Cup” without some lawyers involved. The main topic of discussion is the different racing areas available for the teams to practice. Initially, the Port of Auckland said that the inner harbor “stadium” style courses along the waterfront would be allowed, only to later change their minds due to commercial traffic. Later, they changed their minds again due because of commercial traffic. What is causing a stir among the teams is that New Zealand’s boat is suspected to be faster in lighter winds, which are more common in these inshore courses. Naturally the challenging teams are fighting to keep the inshore courses closed and the matter has

54

gone to formal arbitration. So far it appears that the America’s Cup organizers will be making the call day by day, but nice to see some spicy arguments in what has been a rather math-filled cycle so far. Racing is slated to finally get going December 17-20 with the Christmas Race, the first and only America’s Cup World Series event in 2020. This will be the only chance teams have to truly see how their machines perform vs the competition before the PRADA Cup Challenger Selection Series begins in January. The America’s Cup match final is scheduled for March 6-21, 2021, and will be a stunning race to watch. It’s been said that watching sailboat racing is like watching paint dry, but this time around, it appears that we have some pretty fast paint.

Boating with Missy By Melissa Gervais

‘Tis The Season My favorite holiday tradition is to get dressed up with my shiny shoes and dangly earrings, then head to an elegant hotel downtown. It’s always decorated beautifully, with a musician seated at the piano, and they have the most glamorous wingback chairs. To toast the season, I always order an ice-cold Cosmopolitan with three floating cranberries. I also have a favorite boating holiday tradition that happens on the first Thursday of December each year. Our boating group gets together for cocktails, dinner, and a hilarious gift exchange that has been lovingly referred to as the “Gong Show” at the yacht club. There is a $30 limit, and everyone who brings a gift, gets to participate. Our gift exchange started innocently enough, but I remember the TSN Turning Point. There I was, taking a bite of my Tiramisu, when, out of nowhere, a remote control race car swerved around my wine glass and made a beeline for the end of the table only to end up high-centered in the butter dish! The next year, a small drone hovered over my pecan pie, before it darted through an open window, only to crash to the ground adjacent to the Commodore’s parking stall. However, the most coveted gift each year is still the bucket of cured meats and the Montblanc pen case containing two very special cigarettes. Our evening always closes down on the shoreside patio, with a raised snifter to toast the fabulously decorated boats cruising by. December has always been a fabulous time to meet up with our friends, share stories from our summer cruising season, and quite often a blur of taffeta and cab receipts. With COVID-19, this year will be quite sobering. Gone is the annual boating party at the yacht club, there will be no bling at the hotel, the company I work for isn’t having a party, and the boat parades have been 56

cancelled. Public health officials have restricted the number of people who can gather, so there will be no over-the-top house parties or special dinners out. Right now, it’s not looking very festive. When I find myself in situations that are entirely out of my control, I refer to my childhood mentors, Dr. Suess and Winnie-the-Pooh. They have the uncanny ability to find happiness, no matter how dire the circumstances. It was the Grinch who shed light on the over-consumerism of the holiday season, and a reminder that the true spirit of the holidays, “doesn’t come from a store.” And it was the silly old bear that taught me the importance of long-lasting friendships. This year, I’m choosing people over things. I’m going to extend compassion where I might not otherwise, share joy, and be a kid at heart again. I plan to spend a few more winter nights on the boat, maybe curled up with a good book, or watching great movies like It’s a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street. I’m also planning to head out for an afternoon cruise with a hot chocolate and my camera in hand. Maybe I’ll even buy a fruit cake! At any rate, this holiday season will be really different from last year, and there is nothing I can do to change it. Let’s plan to embrace it, and take solace in the fact that we are all in the same boat. Wherever you may be, and however you may celebrate, I raise my Cosmo and extend best wishes for a happy holiday from my deck to yours. Missy grew up boating with her family in the Gulf Islands. She works for a yacht services company based in Vancouver, B.C. and boats most weekends from April to October. A self-proclaimed weekend warrior, she enjoys blogging about everything cool for women who boat at missygoesboating.com.

Tight Lines By Mark Yuasa

The future looks bright for spring halibut fisheries as sport-fishing constituents and state fishery managers work hard to ensure the 2021 season will remain on an even keel. “We’ve got a preliminary agreement to a season structure for 2021 that reflects a season similar to last year,” said Heather Hall, a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) fish policy coordinator. “It makes things a lot easier when we have consistent quotas and initial opening dates that we can work with.” This direction to create a more stable halibut fishery off the coast in the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound began in 2019 and continues through 2022. It provides no last-minute changes or closures, allowing anglers to make fishing plans well in advance of the dates set forth. The 2021 total sport halibut catch quota will be 287,083 pounds and here is the breakdown by area: 77,550 pounds for Puget Sound/ Strait of Juan de Fuca fisheries; 128,187 for Neah Bay/La Push; 62,896 for Westport; and 17,950, plus 500 for a near-shore fishery off Ilwaco. While preliminary dates are set for halibut fisheries, much of this will also hinge on how the pandemic plays out in the coming months. Eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca/Puget Sound April 22-May 22 and June 3-26 (Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays), and May 28-30 Western Strait of Juan de Fuca May 6-22 (Thursdays and Saturdays), May 28-30, and June 3-26 (Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays) Neah Bay/La Push May 6-22 and June 3-26 (Thursdays and Saturdays), and May 28 and 30 Westport May 6-23 (Thursdays and Sundays) and May 27. If catch quota remains, it may reopen June 17, 20, 24 and 27

58

Ilwaco May 6-23 and June 3-27 (Thursdays and Sundays), and May 27 The onslaught of the pandemic led to a much different scenario in 2020 with statewide fishing closures announced by WDFW on March 25 with the Governor’s Stay Home, Stay Healthy directive, just as some halibut seasons were set to start this past April. After careful consultation, WDFW reopened Puget Sound and Strait of Juan de Fuca for halibut fishing on a every other day schedule from May 20June 29 to avoid overnight travel, and then three days per week from Aug. 6-Sept. 30.The northern coast was open three days per week from Aug. 6-Sept. 30. The southern coast was open Aug. 6, and two days per week from Aug. 13-Sept. 30, plus a few additional dates near the end of the season. “We had positive feedback on starting some of the seasons in late summer that led to good fishing, but we didn’t come close to catching our quotas due to horrible weather at the end of September,” Hall said. “We just couldn’t add enough dates to catch our remaining quota.” The preliminary 2020 catch data showed sport anglers caught 122,564 pounds leaving 164,519 on the table. In 2019, 90 percent of the quota or 270,024 pounds of halibut was caught. The International Pacific Halibut Commission will meet Jan. 25-29 in British Columbia (location and city TBD) to review halibut seasons and catch quotas from Alaska south to California. The National Marine Fisheries Service will then make its final approval sometime in March or sooner. Mark Yuasa is a longtime fishing and outdoors writer. Born and raised in Seattle, and a U of W alum, Mark joined the Northwest Marine Trade Association in 2017 as the Director of Grow Boating Programs after 33 years at The Seattle Times. He also volunteers with the BSA Chief Seattle Council and National Order of the Arrow organizations, and enjoys fishing for salmon and other fish species in local waterways.

On Watch By Peter Schrappen

Boating Means Business Chances are that you, like most lawmakers, do not fully appreciate the economic impact of the nation’s outdoor recreation economy. Outdoor recreation economy, what’s that? You mean the snorkeling, fishing, snowmobiling, boating, and other outdoor recreational businesses just don’t add up to a lot of fun, but actually create tens of thousands of jobs and add billions of dollars of value to our economy? Exactly. And you don’t have to just take my word for it. As the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable likes to shout it from the mountaintops on their homepage: “In 2020, the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) released updated national and state-level statistics that formally recognize the critical role the industry plays in supporting economic growth in the United States. In addition, the BEA found that the outdoor recreation industry is growing rapidly, eclipsing the average increase in overall U.S. GDP.” Just as with the rest of the country’s numbers, Washington state has built on our impressive story that the outdoor industry, especially boating, means business. With the most recent numbers, boating continues to lead the pack of outdoor economic impact by adding $718 million of value added to the state’s economy. Expect these numbers to rise next year as boating continues to shine in what’s turned out to be an upside-down year of normalcy. There’s no better example of the power of tying boating to careers when interacting with lawmakers than my last trip to Port Angeles in October. Flanked by principals from Port of Port Angeles, Platypus Marine, and Westport Yachts, I shared our collective story with Sen. Van De Wege and Reps. Tharinger and Chapman. All long-time champions of our industry, it certainly could have been written off as preaching to the choir. To this, I would say, “If the choir was so great, then why all the choir practice?” Our team toured seven superyachts that magical October day. Not only were Westport’s on full display, but we hit the pay dirt with superyacht tandem of Lonian and Hodor moored for us to see. More than that, we were able to have an informational interview with the crew to learn more and bring home the fact, to paraphrase my inner cave man, “Boats here, good. Boats not here, bad.”

60

The day culminated with our big ask: Would you support our idea to change the tax policy around skippered-provided chartered trips? What’s that, you say? Imagine if you wanted to rent an Airbnb for a weekend, but before you did this, you’d have to pay property tax on the entire home - even if your vacation was only for two days! That would be crazy, but it’s exactly the taxes you’d face if you chartered a vessel with a skipper and crew provided here in this state. Washington sees no economic activity as a result of this disjointed tax policy. The good news is that a coalition is in place to remedy this craziness. The thinking is that if taxes could apply to only the duration of the vacation, then our state will reap all of the business activity we are currently not seeing. Stay tuned on this one. It’s going to be a fun issue to take to Olympia next session, which starts on January 11, 2021. Actually, I should say, “take to Olympia from the comfort of an easy chair” as the legislature is virtual next year. For more information, check out https://recreationroundtable.org/economic-impact-by-state/. Additionally, he serves on the boards of the Boating Safety Advisory Council, Washington Boating Alliance, and U.S. Superyacht Association.

IRWIN YACHT SALES LOSES A SHINING STAR Three generations of Maynards. Mike (left) with his son Matt, and grandson.

Irwin Yacht Sales, said goodbye to Mike Maynard, the father of brokerage owner Matt Maynard, this past November. “Working with my father has been one of the biggest privileges

of my life,” said Matt Maynard. “Being able to share my passion with him in business was a dream come true professionally.” Irwin Yacht Sales, with offices in Seattle and Portland, is one the longest running premier boat and yacht brokerages in the Northwest, and Maynard’s passing will be felt by many. “He was liked by everyone he came in contact with,” he continued, “and was always one to offer a kind word, share a smile, or jump right in to help anyone who needed it.” After 25 years as a Project Manager in the construction department at the McDonald’s Corporation, Mike joined his son Matt at Irwin Yacht Sales in Portland, where he quickly became an asset to the team. “My father's strength of character, his honesty, his integrity, and his values are the driving force behind everything I do,” Matt adds. “His love of family, including the daily

FaceTime calls on the way to school with my son Mason, will forever be some of my most cherished memories.” Mike grew up in Vancouver, Washington, and married his high school sweetheart, Kathy Christensen, daughter of megayacht builder Dave Christensen. Just recently, they celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary. Together they raised three sons; Matt, Scott, and Casey. Mike was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren; Neveah, Enzo, Evelyn, Noelle, Grace, Mason, and Hudson. As a big supporter of The Ronald McDonald House, Mike helped build a Camp Ronald McDonald with his three sons one summer. For those inclined to show the Maynard family support during this difficult time, they are asking that a donation be made to the Ronald McDonald House Charities in lieu of flowers.

Onboard By Margaret Pommert

Onboard Relationship Savers Sharing a day on the water with people we care about is one of the best parts of boating. Time away from everyday problems, combined with enjoying nature and good company, can renew and strengthen our connections. Sharing a boat with others can also have its challenges. I’ve crewed with hundreds of different people over the years, and trust me, I’ve seen lots of disagreements on board that could have been prevented. With experience, comes some strategies to address these issues that can erupt without warning. Sometimes it’s just adopting simple little habits, such as repeating back instructions to ensure they’ve been understood. Some of us have also discovered favorite equipment that mitigate common sources of friction between crew. So as you look for the perfect gifts for your friends and loved ones this holiday season, below is a list of some of my favorite argument prevention items that can easily be wrapped up with a bright red bow! “Get that line through the mooring ball!” Hook and Moor boat hook “I can’t hear you!” Waterproof Bluetooth headsets for whole crew “My feet are wet and cold!” Seaboots (like Dubarry) that are large enough for extra socks, breathable, and waterproof. Also Heat Holder synthetic socks and thermal insoles. “My hands are wet and cold!” Breathable, waterproof, insulated gloves. Fishermen’s style insulated vinyl gloves aren’t fashionable but they work! “You’ll drain the battery!” Full feature battery monitor (not just voltmeter). Automatic low voltage disconnect technology. Better batteries/ more capacity. Solar energy charger. Larger alternator. Smart charger. “What if you or I fall overboard?” Lifejacket with whistle and strobe. The Lifesling Overboard Rescue System. Hoisting tackle appropriate to boat (3:1 for sailboat, 5:1 for powerboat). Jacklines and tethers. Throwable overboard devices. Automatic overboard AIS, DSC, proximity transponders. Man Overboard tracking enabled chartplotter. “Jump onto the dock!” Fender Step. 62

“You promised a slip, shower, laundry, store, and restaurant tonight!” Current edition of the Waggoner Cruising Guide. “I can’t reach it!” Long pull cords on sail cover zippers. Folding steps at base of mast. Folding step stool. “You tightened the knot/shackle too tight!” Marlinespike, shackle key. “I don’t know where it is!” Label maker. Laminated diagrams showing locations of emergency equipment, key system switches, and valves. “How long until we get there?” Navionics or other navigation app for everyone’s phone. “Is it going to be cold/wet/rough today?” Weather apps for everyone’s phone. “We’re anchored way too close to that other boat!” Laser range finder. “It fell overboard!” Floating key ring. Tethers for hats and sunglasses. Spare deck fill key. Drybags for the dinghy and going ashore. “Your turn to flake the sails!” Stack-pack sail bags. “This boat smells!” Replace permeated head hoses. Dehumidifier & heater. Clean bilge “diapers.” Holding tank enzymes. Dilute white vinegar to wipe down surfaces. “Towels are wet and smelly!” Synthetic microfiber towels (no cotton!) “I’m not carrying all that down to the boat!” Folding cart/trolley “We’re driving our dinghy around trying to find our boat in crowded anchorage at night!” Colored solar Luci light left on in the cockpit. “Quick, move the fender!” More fenders (seriously!) “We need to go somewhere I can send a text!” Garmin inReach satellite communicator. If boating together presents challenges to your relationships, remember that others have probably experienced the same thing and found solutions. Onward! Seattle-based Margaret Pommert is a licensed 100-ton captain, certified sail, power, and navigation instructor, leader in the woman boater community, and Safety at Sea advocate.

Ask Nigel By Nigel Barron

As I sit down to write this column, we’re looking at the first real frost of the year. Customers often ask me how to prepare a sailboat for winter. We’ve previously discussed different winterizing items on the mechanical side, and those would be true for either sail or power. But what about the mast? The first thing to do, is to stand on your boat and look around at everything not made of metal. Start with big items like your sails, which you’ll want to get off the boat. Sails that are left furled in the mast or on the forestay will get green and moldy by the time you unfurl them in the spring. This is good time to look over the sails and see if there are any repairs needed. How is the UV patch on the main (if it is a furling main) or along the leach of the headsail? These parts are intended to be sacrificial. If you take care of them, your sail will last longer. Look for any other stitching issues or tears and address them. With the sails down, look at the canvas dodger (also known as the bimini or spray-hood). Just like sails, it also needs care and cleaning. Check that the zippers work. Fisheries Supply, the venerable Seattle maritime store, sells a variety of products specifically to treat the zippers. Check the stitching. Like with sails, the stitching is susceptible to UV and general wear and tear. Don’t be afraid to loosen parts of the frame. Take pictures and use tape to mark specific places where legs of the structure attach to the boat or other parts of the structure. Tape really helps when it’s time to put it all back together. When you take the canvas down to store it, do your best to keep it flat, particularly the Eisenglass (or clear window) material. These materials tend to get brittle with age, so rolling or folding will crack it. Also do not store window against window. For storage, put a piece of cardboard, butcher paper, or felt between the Eisenglass. Halyards and lines are all soft items to take down and put away if you can. Big tip: sew a reeving eye in the tail of the halyard to make it 64

easier to pull it out with a tag line. Like all the other items, it’s a good time to look it over for any wear or compromising damage. If you don’t feel like pulling the halyards all the way out, another option is to tie a line to the shackle and sky the halyards. You can coil up the excess and bag it or tuck it in the sail cover. For the interior, it’s a good idea to take as much off the boat as possible and store cushions and other soft items at home or in a storage locker. Priority #1 for the interior is to get a dehumidifier, and keep it running 24-7. I actually run a dehumidifier year-round, as it moves the air around and controls the humidity inside the cabin. I recommend the brands that have a hose connected to the back, so that you can leave the hose end in your sink and not worry about planning trips to the boat to empty out the dehumidifier’s drain bucket. In addition to running the dehumidifier, I also suggest that you run a small, safe heater inside the cabin to keep the boat a little warmer through the winter. I like the oil-filled radiator style heaters, because there are fewer moving parts and it’s not likely to start a fire. You’ll want to open up cupboards and some panels on the engine hatch to get the air to move around. Lastly, take the time to check and close any thru-hulls that don’t need to be open. Exercising the thru-hulls is a good habit anyway, and if you close something critical, like an engine pickup, make a big note to remind yourself that you did! Happy Hour BY BRIDGET CHARTERS | PHOTO BY JENNY PACE

Cheers to Pomegranate Fresh pomegranate juice paired with a lovely botanical gin makes for the perfect combination. Pomegranates can be juiced like lemons, with an electric juice or hand reamer, and half a pomegranate yields about 2 ounces of juice. Cheers! POMEGRANATE AND GIN FIZZ 2 ounces Hendrick Gin 2 ounces Fever-Tree Light Tonic Water (can sub club soda) A squeeze of a lime 1 egg white 2 ounces fresh pomegranate juice Splash of rose water - optional Garnish with pomegranate seeds or dried rose petals Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and top with the gin, lime juice, egg white, pomegranate juice, and rose water, and cover. Shake vigorously to foam the egg and ice the drink. Pour into a martini or a large lowball glass (the drink can be served on ice in a lowball). Top with tonic. 66

International Ports of Call BY LORI EASTES

British Virgin Islands The British Virgin Islands are the perfect destination for those looking for the ultimate cruising adventure in the Caribbean. The breathtaking collection of islands features world-renowned dive sites, sun-drenched harbors, vibrant fuchsia sunsets, and violet clouds. Fun and natural beauty await you in the BVI. The BVI are a volcanic archipelago consisting of 60 pristine islands located in the Caribbean Sea. The four large islands; Anegada, Virgin Gorda, Tortola, and Jost Van Dyke are known for their lively history and sublime scenery. Before heading ashore, take time to cruise through the ethereal waterways surrounding these big islands, where the seemingly endless shores and picturesque backdrops make the BVI a premier yachting destination for those who are chartering or cruising in their own yachts. When you do decide to go ashore, the unique spirit of each island provides a wide array of activities for all ages. The largest island is Tortola, which is a hub for novice and experienced yachters alike. The vast list of harbors and protected anchorages 68

around the island makes it easy to take your adventures ashore. Reach new heights by hiking Mount Sage, a 1,781-foot (543m) peak surrounded by a drought-tolerant forest featuring flourishing ferns and vivid flowers that can be found on the shaded trails of the mountain. Main Street offers a bustling collection of boutiques, restaurants, and the sounds of the local fungi bands, a local form of the island’s rich music heritage. Visitors will find handcrafted local products including spices, jewelry, and fabrics while shopping on Main Street and also can enjoying the tastes of the local delicacies, including lobster and conch, at exquisite ocean-front restaurants. Listen to reggae music wafting across the waves from Bomba’s Shack, while you surf in Tortola’s Apple Bay. A trip to the British Virgin Islands wouldn’t be complete without visiting The Baths, located on the Island of Virgin Gorda. These massive granite boulders create unique tidal pools, coves, and grottos that are absolutely spectacular. While there, it is

recommended that visitors take the short hike from The Baths to the acclaimed Top Of The Baths restaurant, an oasis with spectacular views and superb dishes. There are no shortage of activities in the BVI, whether you are there for a tranquil retreat for two, a festive party gathering with your closest friends, or with the family. Mazes of coral reefs teeming with varieties of kaleidoscopic fish can be discovered by snorkeling, and world-renowned offshore fishing locations are chock full of marlin or tuna. Offshore kiteboarding offers views that are unsurpassed anywhere else in the world. With so many exquisite islands and hidden spots to explore in the BVI, visitors can easily get lost in the thrill and adventure of it all while navigating through this stunning destination. The crystal-clear, shallow azure waters combined with the abundance

of private beaches leave visitors with only one dilemma— which one to pick first! For information (including current COVID-19 travel considerations), visit bvitourism.com. Ports of Call BY DEANE HISLOP

Tacoma, Washington Over the past 30 years, Tacoma has morphed from what some longtime residents and visitors concede was “a real dump” into a true destination for boaters. The Thea Foss Waterway was once a drab industrial pier, pocked with a handful of bordered-up canneries and factories that were not so inviting to boaters. Beginning in the early 1990s, the “City of Destiny” took steps to revitalize itself. Located at the entrance of the waterway, the Foss Waterway Seaport maritime museum contains exhibits appealing to a wide range of ages. It also offers 1,200 feet of guest moorage on a first-come, first-served basis, with 30- and 50-amp power, and water. The Seaport building, the last remaining heavy timber-framed warehouse on the waterway, reopened in 2013 after a major refurbishment. Deeper into the inlet, guest moorage in unoccupied permanent moorage slips is available at Foss Harbor Marina. Contact the marina office for availability. The docks have been recently improved. The marina offers fuel, 30- and 50-amp power, water, restrooms, showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, pumpout, convenience store, and an indoor lounge area. Continuing south, located in front of the Museum of Glass is Dock Street Marina. Reservations are recommended year-round. Visitors will discover 30-, 50- and 100-amp power, water, slip-side pumpout, laundry, restrooms, showers, and concierge service. These three marinas, the Museum of Glass, bars, pubs, grills, and a fish market are linked and are within easy walking distance via an esplanade that runs the westside of the waterway. The Museum of Glass opened in 2002, with an impressive collection of works by glass artists from all over the world, including native son Dale Chihuly. The museum also includes a glassblowing studio and the 500-foot long Bridge of Glass that connects the waterfront to downtown’s Museum District. This cultural district is the location of the recently remodeled Washington State History Museum, Children’s Museum of Tacoma, and the Tacoma Art Museum, all worth visiting. Getting around downtown Tacoma is easy, either by walking or by riding the Tacoma Link. The Link is a free, 1.6-mile light rail line that runs along Pacific Avenue from the Tacoma Dome Station to 70

the Theater District and the 90-year-old Pantages Theater, with stops along the way. It runs every 12 minutes, Monday through Friday, and every 24 minutes on the weekends. Take the rail to shop Antique Row between Seventh and Ninth Street, or go to 11th Street to find the Broadway Farmers Market on Thursdays, May to October. If your crew includes a car buff, one of the world’s largest auto museums, America’s Car Museum (AMC), is in Tacoma, and accessible via the Tacoma Link. Completed in late 2011, the museum features cars, trucks, and motorcycles from private owners, corporations, and the LeMay collection, which amassed a Guinness Book record of more than 3,500 vehicles in the mid-1990s. After visiting the ACM, stroll down the hill to the world-famous confectioner, Brown & Haley and savor some of its famous Almond Roca candy. Pacific Avenue is lined with excellent restaurants and pubs that offer everything from fast-food to sit-down gourmet meals. A favorite stop is the Harmon Pub & Brewery for dinner and cold ale. The pub occupies the street level of a 19th century building, which once housed the Harmon Furniture Factory. Harmon’s is known for its homemade microbrews, juicy hamburgers, stone-baked pizzas, and tasty nachos. Other wonderful eateries along Pacific Avenue include El Gaucho, Indochine Asian Dining Lounge, and The Melting Pot. Tacoma has come a long way from its industrial days and now makes a wonderful year-round boating destination and cultural experience. Deane Hislop calls Anacortes home. He and his wife cruise “year-round between Olympia, Washington, and northern Vancouver Island, spending more than 100 nights a year aboard M/V Easy Goin’. The Hislops enjoy meeting other boaters, exploring new locations, sampling local cuisine, and collecting information, experiences and images. Deane is a freelancer whose work has appeared in regional, national, and international publications.

MARITIME CAREER TRAINING Earn a Bachelor of Science degree and graduate with a third mate’s license at one of the following seven maritime academies in the USA: U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York; California State University Maritime Academy; Maine Maritime Academy; Massachusetts Maritime Academy; Great Lakes Maritime Academy; Texas A&M Maritime Academy; and the State University of New York Maritime College. Visit maritime.dot.gov/education/maritime-academies for more information. Alternatively, one can advance “through the hawsepipe” meaning someone can work their way up from entry level to the pilothouse. This route requires that a person first obtain a Merchant Mariner Credential, or MMC, as an ordinary seaman or able seaman. The following list of local schools can provide the guidance and training needed to obtain a credential and advance in rank: Compass Courses Maritime Training in Edmonds offers courses and exams required to obtain MMC endorsements as an Able Seaman, Lifeboatman, and Tankerman. When the sea time credentials have been met, there are classes and exams offered to obtain a license to captain a 100- or 200-ton vessel or serve as an apprentice mate on a tug. www. compasscourses.com Crawford Nautical School in Seattle offers courses and exams required to obtain a license as an engineer, master, or mate on vessels up to 1,600 tons. www.crawfordnautical.com Flagship Maritime in Tacoma offers courses and exams required for a license as operator of an uninspected passenger vessel (aka “six pack”), master of 100-ton vessels, and endorsements for commercial assistance towing and auxiliary sail. Flagship Maritime also offers training in marine law enforcement, marine search and rescue, and in operation of a fire boat. www.flagshipmaritimellc.com

Maritime Institute of Technology & Graduate Studies in Seattle offers courses and exams required to become a marine pilot or a tugboat master or mate. www.mitags.org Seattle Maritime Academy, located at Seattle Central College, offers courses and internships leading to an endorsement as an Able Seaman, Special, or Qualified Member of the Engineering Department. The academy also offers customized training. www. maritime.seattlecentral.edu Zenith Maritime Institute offers classes and exams required for a 100-ton master’s license. Classes take place in various locations, including Anacortes, Washington. Zenith Maritime also offers classes online for an OUPV endorsement (captain of a vessel of less than 100 tons carrying six or fewer passengers for hire). www.zenithmaritime.com The following two organizations are working to prepare women for high-demand jobs in maritime: The International Maritime Organization provides fellowships for women seeking management and technical training in maritime. The IMO sponsors 40 women per year in the Women in Port Management course in France, 10 per year in the same course in Israel, and sends one woman per year to the World Maritime University in Sweden. www.imo.org Puget Sound Pilots created the Piloting Opportunities in Puget Sound Committee to increase the number of female marine pilots. The committee, whose members are marine pilots and women maritime professionals, conducts numerous outreach efforts to educate female mariners about piloting opportunities in the Puget Sound region.

WOMEN MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN MARITIME LEADERSHIP Capt. Sandy Bendixen, first and currently the only female member of Puget Sound Pilots.
