Last year saw a big spike in new and used recreational yacht sales as boaters, with varying degrees of experience, took to the waters to find refuge from COVID-19 restrictions and stress. With more boats on the waters, came more accidents, many of which could have been avoided with basic boater education.

Go Get It “You want something, go get it. Period.” These are the words of Chris Gardner, businessman turned motivational speaker, whose story was portrayed in the movie The Pursuit of Happyness. What I love about this message is that it’s just that simple. Yet it easily weaves into every fabric of our lives and our aspirations, imploring us to action with the magic word “GO.” Go see the broker about a new yacht. Go find a charter to take you and your family or closest friends on the most exotic vacation you’ve ever had. Go get what you want. This month’s cover features the illustrious Broadwater, a 182’ Feadship available for charter in the Caribbean and West Mediterranean through Worth Avenue Yachts. Chartering a yacht can make for the most turn-key vacation ever. You show up, the crew is there to greet you, serve you, and ensure that your vacation surpasses every single expectation you might have. Then, you fly home. There are no docking lines to deal with, navigation challenges to figure out, itineraries to plan. The charter crew 14

knows the hot places to go – and guaranteed they will take you there. In this month’s issue, our International Ports of Call (page 72) takes us to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. After reading about the adventures that await there, now may be time to pack up and just go! Also in this issue, we feature two pieces that concentrate on the importance of boater safety education (page 50) and yachting etiquette (page 54). Due to the spike in sales of new and used recreational yachts this past year, there are a lot of new players on the waterways. Time to get educated! With some safety reminders and a dose of common sense, a rise in preventable accidents and social missteps can be easily avoided. Go get what you want, and when you get it, tell us about it! (Who knows? Maybe we’ll start a new monthly column featuring your stories that were inspired by the simple—yet profound—advice of Chris Gardner!) See you on the water! Schelleen Rathkopf

Nautical News Adopt-A-Manatee for Valentine’s Day How could you not love the sweet and gentle manatee? This Valentine’s Day, you can show your love for these endangered sea creatures by choosing one to adopt and help care for its wellbeing. With the Adopt-A-Manatee program, run by the Florida-based Save the Manatee Club, participants can pick a symbolic manatee, for themselves or as a gift, that will be supported via conservation efforts in the manatee’s native coastal Florida habitat. Created by singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett, the Save the Manatee Club has managed the Adopt-A-Manatee program since 1984 to raise awareness and funds for manatee habitat protection. Real, living Florida manatees are identified by researchers and featured as program adoptees. Some of the original Adopt-A-Manatee animals are still sighted at Florida’s Blue Spring State Park. “Sadly, most living adult manatees bear some sort of scar from a boat strike or other injury,” said Patrick Rose, an aquatic biologist and the club’s executive director. While these scars assist researchers in identification, they serve as a grave reminder of the pain and suffering manatees face in the wild, as they return to the same warm water habitat every winter. Each manatee adoption helps support lifesaving efforts, like rescues and rehabilitation, as well as the research that contributes valuable data needed to establish manatee protection rules. “With a large portion of our conservation funds coming from the Adopt-A-Manatee program, each adoption truly makes a difference in the lives of imperiled manatees,” says Rose. Manatee adoptions start at $25 and include a personalized certificate with a photo and biography of your chosen manatee, a membership handbook, and subscriptions to Save the Manatee Club’s newsletters. Orders must be mailed by Jan. 31 to arrive in time for the Feb.14 Valentine’s Day holiday. Visit savethemanatee.org/adopt or call 1-800-432-JOIN.

Yacht Chef Lee Unveils Global Galley Cookbook For those looking to add some spice to their cruising culinary lives, chef Elizabeth Lee has released a new book, called Made With Love: Culinary Inspirations From Around the World, with an array of sumptuous recipes designed to be made within the limited confines of a yacht’s galley. The book is divided into four sections – salads, appetizers, entrees, and desserts – and includes a total of 163 original gourmet recipes that can be made in any size of kitchen, including galleys or small apartments. The dishes chosen range through all cooking experience levels, from novice to expert, and each has been carefully paired with wine suggestions from Hahn Family Wines, based in California’s Santa Lucia Highlands. Lee has lived in the Caribbean since 2003, but one of her specialties is the cuisine of the Pacific Coast. In her book, she provides expert advice on cooking techniques for a wide range of skill levels, including more advanced methods such as sous vide and molecular gastronomy. Many of the recipes in Made With Love include helpful directions for advance preparation, which is key information for anyone cooking on a yacht far offshore. The book also contains 138 photographs of the completed dishes and selected travel locations taken by Lee’s husband, Captain Warren East. A native of Nova Scotia, Lee knows her way around making meals on the ocean during her years working in the private charter yacht industry. Since she earned a Culinary Arts degree from the University of Okanagan in Kelowna, B.C., Lee has won several chef competitions and logged about 250,000 miles traveling the world on yachts to various global destinations. 24

Nautical News SDSA Cautions Boaters on ‘Innocent Passage’ Rule Under COVID Following the December 2020 release of a boat crew detained in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) for violating territorial water regulations, Hank George, president of the Salty Dog Sailing Association (SDSA), wrote a public warning for its members to be aware of the “Right of Innocent Passage” rule while sailing in waters near any foreign country, especially during the COVID-19 crisis. In the incident, Captain Nick Cancro and crew of the Marie Elena – part of the Homeward Bound Flotilla – were detained last spring for venturing into BVI’s waters without consent. They were released to return to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands last month only after pleading guilty to the violation, even though the transgression was an innocent mistake, and agreeing to pay a $1,000-per-person fine for the four people aboard. George noted that Captain Cancro wanted to warn other boaters about the “tight restrictions and enforcement by the BVI for vessels that (even accidentally) venture into their waters.” George also said that “all cruisers need to be cautious of such restrictions anywhere else in the world as well.”

26

The violation in BVI involved a long-established seafaring rule called the Right of Innocent Passage, George wrote, which states that vessels that do not stop in a particular country are allowed to pass through the country’s territorial waters. This rule, he wrote, is viewed with “substantial variation” in how it is interpreted around the world. For example, since the COVID pandemic began last spring, several countries said that stopping in their territorial waters or docking at their ports could be perceived as a health risk, causing them to close their territorial borders. Because of these interpretations, SDSA is advising members to recognize that “countries are within their right to suspend the Right of Innocent Passage,” and that there is no over-riding international law to prohibits such actions. “Also be aware you can run into officials that overstep their bounds in times of significant concerns, and your legal opportunities and judicial exercise of discretion may not be what you are used to back home,” George added.

Nautical News America’s Boating Club Launches Mobile App America’s Boating Club has launched a new mobile resource for boaters—an app that provides a wide range of boating information for smartphones and tablets. The America’s Boating Club app features include nautical reference information, such as access to maintenance records, usable float plans, weather information, tides and currents, and more. “As technology has evolved, we have continually searched for new ways to give people the information they need,” said Mary Paige Abbott, chief commander for America’s Boating Club. “This free app is the perfect resource and a helpful tool for boaters of all experience levels.” Using GPS to provide current location information, the app includes an emergency section that provides a boat’s information to contact first-responders or to give assistance if needed. Users can also create a virtual log and easily file float plans. The resources section includes a database of helpful links to sites such as the National Weather Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, as well as to tide charts, navigation light aides, and communication flag information—even a section on how to tie knots. Boaters can also use the app to request a free vessel safety check from their local squadron. For over 100 years, America’s Boating Club has served a community of more than 20,000 members, organized into 300 local squadrons across the country, with activities for all types of recreational boaters. Hasse & Company Port Townsend Sails Gets New Owner Hasse & Company Port Townsend Sails, which has operated a full-service boatyard in Port Townsend, Washington, for more than 40 years, will now be owned and operated by the Port Townsend Shipwrights Co-op. Hasse & Co., which has provided countless vessel repairs, refits, restorations, and new builds in the Kitsap area of Washington state, recently re-opened its repair department and is providing consulting for new sail orders under the Port Townsend Shipwrights Co-op name, often shortened to PT Shipwrights. With the purchase, the new owners have added sailmaking to their repertoire of trades and expertise of the maritime craft in Port Townsend’s thriving waterfront community. “Our talented, capable crew will continue to bring their art, knowledge, and skill to the design and construction of the Cape Horn-worthy sails that PT Sails has been building since 1978,” the company said. Although former Hasse & Co. owner Carol Hasse will be retiring later this year, she said she will continue working with PT Shipwrights Co-op as a consultant. 28

Built specifically for socializing and practical living, the 37 XC puts as much focus on the outdoor spaces as it does on the interior experience. The boat cruises at 28 knots, powered by two outboard 350 horsepower Mercury V8 engines, and maxes out at 48 knots. The 37 XC’s innovative Gullwing Door concept opens up the front cabin, providing access to the spacious outdoor foredeck, either with table seating or to a large sun deck. The versatile aft deck is designed with an aft facing perch and can be equipped with an optional wet bar module or an aft cabin that allows for additional two overnight guests. The front cabin has 30% more space than earlier Axopar models and 32

TARGA 27.2 While the venerable Targa 27 has been produced for more than 20 years, the latest redesign, dubbed the 27.2, continues a gradual evolution for this sport utility yacht. The official launch of the new 27.2 took place almost two years ago, and the North American distributor, Cardinal Yacht Sales, has already delivered seven of the 27.2 models. Recently, however, Targa (Botnia Marin, Finland) has introduced the Blackline Trim package for the 27.2, and delivery of the first boat with this package has just taken place at Cardinal Yachts Docks in Bellingham, Washington. The third-generation Targa 27.2 sets a new course for the series, while retaining the stable structure and superb offshore performance of previous models. Besides subtle changes to the appearance of the boat, the hull length of the 27.2 has been increased by 13 centimeters and beam by 6 centimeters. The pilothouse, with two standard sliding doors, is also more spacious than the previous model, with seating for six and a table for four. The double-berth layout in the aft cabin (one double and two pipe berths) now accommodates four passengers. The cabin head compartment comes standard and is also bigger than before. 34

Utilizing Volvo Penta’s new DPI outdrive package with hydraulic shifting, which allows low-speed/trolling with the drive, the 27.2 can be equipped very nicely for fishing, cruising, commuting, and just about anything that a 27-foot vessel can reasonably do. Cruise comfortably anywhere in all seasons with hull speeds up to 30+ knots, seating for six in the cabin, diesel heat, and a spacious head. The 27.2 has wide passageways around the pilothouse and fore and aft self-draining decks. The U-shaped front seat at the bow comes with storage lockers underneath. The compact galley is equipped with a two-burner stove, fresh water, and a small refrigerator. A swimming platform and ladder can also be found at the stern. Like all boats in the 27 series, the 27.2 is safe in open water swells and whitecaps. The new engine compartment also has room for the entire range of Volvo Penta D6-330, D6-370 and D6-400 diesel engines, which makes maintenance easier. The estimated top speed with the 400-hp Penta engine is about 40 knots.

BOATER SAFETY EDUCATION IS PARAMOUNT FOR THE PREVENTION OF ACCIDENTS BY PETER MARSH

50

Recreational boating is a popular pastime in the region, just ask anyone who owns at least one canoe, kayak, rowboat, personal watercraft, stand-up paddleboard, drift boat, runabout, sailboat, motor yacht, or some other type of water recreational vessel. In 2020, however, there was big spike of interest as new boaters, with varying degrees of experience, took to the waters to find COVID-19 relief. With more boats on the waters, came more accidents. Accidents that could have been avoided with basic boater education. “Boaters who take chances, inexperienced boaters, ill-prepared boaters, and just plain unlucky boaters are involved in accidents throughout the year, sometimes with tragic results. The chilly waters of the Pacific Northwest can be an unforgiving environment, and safety must be on the minds of everyone who plays in and around water,” warns the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission. Statistically, Washington’s waters are the scene of well over 100 boating accidents in a typical year, resulting in 15-20 deaths. Then again, last year was not an average year. In mid-August alone, the state parks department revealed that there had been 25 recreational boating accidents, five fatalities with four of the victims not wearing a life jacket. The best explanation seems to be that the fear of crowds spreading COVID led more people with little or no boating experience to try to get away from it all on almost every kind of watercraft. The result was a flood of drowning accidents that overwhelmed rescue services.

51

“Boaters need to take personal responsibility for their own safety as well as the safety of their passengers,” said Rob Sendak, Washington State Parks Boating Programs Manager. State law requires that operators of motorboats of 15 hp or greater obtain a boater education card through an online class, but many new boaters are ignoring this law. Unfortunately, this requirement seemed to have little impact this past summer when more boaters than usual were oblivious to the risks inherent in water sports. Labor Day is generally considered the end of the vacation season and rescue services around the region are typically slowing down, but in 2020 there was no respite as summer turned to fall. Labor Day alone saw five adults and two small dogs pulled from the water after a 19-foot aluminum boat capsized off Edmonds. Two of the victims and the dogs were saved by a Washington State Ferries rescue boat, two more were picked up by a South County Fire Department fireboat, and the fifth was found by a private boater. All five victims were wearing life jackets, which probably saved their lives, but these accidents could have been prevented with some basic boater safety education. With the arrival of cold weather two months later, Washington State Ferry crews on the Edmonds-Kingston route noticed a man on a jet ski frantically waving a handkerchief. The ferry stopped and launched their rescue boat to investigate the situation. They found the passenger on the jet ski was a woman with all the signs of hypothermia. She was transferred to the ferry, which resumed the crossing while crew with first aid training tried to warm her up until an ambulance met the boat in Kingston. “The average water temperature for Puget Sound is in the

low 50s at this time of year,” said Sterling. The ferry was an hour late, which delayed the service for the rest of the day. Before this year, a ferry rescue like this might have happened a couple times a year, but in 2020 it was happening every few weeks! DISCOUNT KAYAKS The great majority of boating is done in powerboats, but human-powered craft are more popular than ever before because they’re cheap and easily accessible. In 2015, Jim Emmons of the non-profit organization Water Sports Foundation, coined the term “Kmart Kayakers,” a term easily recognized by rescue service personnel. The term comes from the popularity of the brightly colored, roto-molded plastic kayak, canoe, or paddleboard that novices can pick up at a big-box retailer. Accident reports do not always distinguish between the different boat types involved with a boating incident, but there has definitely been an increase in accidents involving stand-up paddleboards and other small paddle vessels. According to the Seattle Police Department’s Harbor Patrol, people are genuinely shocked to learn that a life jacket is required by law for anyone on paddle craft. The law also requires all boaters carry a sounding device such as a horn, whistle, or bell, plus a white navigation light during low visibility and a nighttime visual distress signal. It takes a village to educate new boaters in our region. When you encounter paddlers without lifejackets far from shore or new boaters that may look even slightly out of their depth, slow down for a minute and check in on them, then politely suggest they wear their PFDs.

If you are boating in Washington, you must have a Washington State Boater Education Card with you when operating a boat with 15 horsepower or greater. If you were born before January 1, 1955, you are exempt.

Hands-on Training Courses – The on-thewater boat handling skills are designed to make you comfortable, knowledgeable, and safe. There are many organizations that offer boating education with classroom and hands-on training.

Equivalency Exam – If you are an experienced boater and have a good working knowledge of navigation rules and Washington laws, you may opt to take an equivalency exam with no reference material.

Home Study Course – This course consists of a study guide and exam booklet. The course offers the basics of safe boating and covers important laws. Online Courses – Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission has a list of

approved online courses offered by private companies. Some are free and others have a fee. After taking the boater education course, submit the Boater Education Card Application to the State Parks, along with $10 and a legal copy of your proof of course completion. Visit boat.wa.gov/boating/boaters-card for more information on boater education resources and exams.

Boating Safety Guidelines

Always wear a life jacket when boating. Besides their lifesaving flotation, life vests and float coats provide added insulation to protect against hypothermia. Be aware of tides. Becoming stuck or stranded in a mud flat can be a serious safety hazard. Be weather wise. Sudden wind shifts, lightning flashes, and choppy water all can mean a storm is brewing. Bring your cell in a waterproof bag. If you have cell phone service, you can call for help without removing the phone from the bag. Dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature.

Assess the wind and wave conditions to decide if you are prepared for potential cold water conditions. Check weather forecasts before leaving home and be aware of changing conditions. Take along extra clothing for children, they get cold faster than adults. In case of capsizing or swamping, stay with your boat. Even when filled with water, the boat will provide some flotation and is easier to see by potential rescuers. Limit the loads of people and equipment carried in boats. Overloaded boats are less maneuverable and more likely to become swamped or capsized. Limit alcohol and/or drug use.

Boating and Yachting Etiquette

101 By Schelleen Rathkopf

54

There has been a tremendous influx of new boat and yacht owners entering the waterways this past year and some of them are piloting their own boats for the very first time. With that in mind, it’s a good time to review the basics of boating and yachting etiquette. Why now? Well, one upside of COVID is that it’s easy to social distance out on the water, and people are flocking to boating as a way of escaping the trials and tribulations of land life. Boat sales reached a 13-year high in 2020, as families and close friends looked for ways to find adventure, despite the countless travel restrictions in place. This trajectory of growth will likely continue in 2021, as the recreational boating industry continues to draw more people into its fold. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned pro, there may be a nugget here worth your while to help you win friends and influence people while you’re enjoying your newfound aquatic lifestyle. This is not a comprehensive list by any means, just some rules of conduct on the water that will keep you on the good side of Miss Manners and other boaters.

In other words, if you enter a harbor and someone’s already there – follow their lead. If they’re on a single hook, hang on a single hook. If they have bow and stern anchors, then go with bow and stern anchors. The unwritten law is that the first boat or yacht (even if its anchored) has the right of way, so if you anchor too close and later swing into them, you’re to blame. If you aren’t sure how much scope they have out (and therefore, how much swinging they might do when the tide changes or the wind and/or currents get active), simply ask them when you arrive and you’ll have your answer. Always be thinking about what’s going to happen if the conditions change, not only with your boat or yacht, but those surrounding you as well. If after you’ve set your anchor, someone new comes in and anchors a little too close to you, let them know right away before they get settled in. No one thinks the middle of the night is the best time

sound reaches the passengers on the other sound waves skim the surface of the water and amplify the sound even more. Even though you may be tucked away inside your cabin, if there is an open window, everyone is going to be heard - in stereo even! So, if you’re snuggling, bickering, talking, singing, listening to music, taking a phone call – all those sounds that are part of our everyday lives – when on the water, it’s different. These sounds are seriously amplified, so common sense is key to keeping the sound garden to a minimum in the neighborhood. This sound thing can be a big problem because so many boaters out there want to enjoy a quiet anchorage. It’s important to note that the same courtesies involving sounds apply when you’re walking the docks. Remind your kids that the running around and shouting is best saved for that time when they’re in a big field or lawn – away from the water. Or if you have an especially spirited

Tight Lines BY MARK YUASA

Salmon Every month, I peer at my computer screen and begin to write my thoughts on the sport fishing world. Thankfully, with 2020 behind us, it’s time to look at what 2021 has in store for salmon fishing opportunities. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) released early 2021 predictions, which I believe offers a glimmer of hope. “I think there are some silver linings for salmon returns in 2021, (and) reason to be optimistic,” said Ryan Lothrop, the WDFW Columbia River Salmon Fishery Manager. “Ocean conditions have put us in a better spot as we’re entering a neutral state that promotes upwelling of cool, nutrient rich sea water.” Columbia Spring Chinook – the first migrating salmon to arrive in Washington – are highly sought after for their tasty reddish-orange meat laced with Omega-3 fatty acids, similar to Alaska’s prized Copper River salmon. The height of the return is March and April, when anglers suffering from a bout of “cabin fever” are looking for early fishing choices along the Columbia River. The WDFW prediction is a modest 2021 spring Chinook return of 143,200 (up from a 2020 forecast of 135,800 and an actual return of 142,494). Under permanent regulations, the Spring Chinook Fishery on the Lower Columbia is currently open through March 31 from Buoy 10 to the I-5 bridge. Fishing beyond March 31 is dependent on expectations by fishery managers and how in-season returns fare. The first spring hatchery Chinook of 2020 was caught on January 29th in the Lower Willamette River in Oregon and weighed 16 pounds. It isn’t unusual each winter to see the first fish caught in January or early February either in the Lower Columbia, Multnomah Channel, or Lower Willamette. The highlight of the 2021 forecasts is a strong 2020 Columbia Coho Jack return, the highest seen since 1977 when 90,092 returned to hatcheries. Fishery managers base the following year’s adult Coho forecast on how the return looked the year before. Coho are the main driver for ocean fisheries from June to September off Neah Bay, 60

La Push, Westport, and Ilwaco, and in late summer and early fall in-river salmon fishing seasons. Small quotas this past summer led to some early fishing closures in the ocean. More good news in 2021 is the Upper Columbia summer Chinook return of 77,600 (up from 38,300 forecast and an actual return of 65,494 in 2020). Also known as “June Hogs,” the Chinook fishing was open in July of 2020, and created a fishing frenzy from Rocky Reach Dam to Chelan Falls and other areas further downstream. Those who relished the unexpected 2020 Upper Columbia sockeye summer season (which had the highest return since 2016), might not like what’s in store this summer. The prediction is 155,600 Sockeye, down considerably from 2020’s forecast of 246,300 and an actual return of 345,018. Many will be waiting with “bated breath” on in-season dam counts to see if a fishery will occur in Upper Columbia. The remaining Columbia fall forecasts will be released soon, but early signals show continued improvement for a “bright” fall Chinook season, based on a predicted return of 324,760 last year and 2021 could be a mirror image. Preliminary fall Chinook returns are predicted to be similar to last year, with a forecast of 95,460. These Chinooks are a prized catch in summer ocean fisheries and at Buoy 10, near the Columbia’s mouth. Lastly, Puget Sound, Strait of Juan de Fuca, and San Juan Island salmon forecasts will be released at the end of this month. Mark Yuasa is a longtime fishing and outdoors writer. Born and raised in Seattle, and a U of W alum, Mark joined the Northwest Marine Trade Association in 2017 as the Director of Grow Boating Programs after 33 years at The Seattle Times. New Year Expectations Wait! I was promised a mellower start to 2021! It’s hard to believe what has transpired thus far, and we are just easing into 2021. What are your expectations for 2021? When it comes to expectations, I have turned to author Chip Conley who has written in detail on this subject. His expectation equation is that disappointment equals expectations minus reality. I like that. In fact, he writes a lot about expectations, and has adopted this quote that disappointment is the result of badly-managed expectations. What are your expectations for the 2021 legislative session? As for your “just the facts” expectations, this session is the first of a two-year cycle. It’s the long session; 105 days to be exact, including weekends. Both the Washington House and Senate are held by Democrats as well as the Governor’s mansion. That should be no surprise as Dems have controlled these branches since 2017. Here are some more expectations. The state’s operating, capital, and transportation budgets will be determined this session. Lawmakers will write a balanced operating budget. There are other facts, too; this session, like the rest of our current life, will be shown live online for the foreseeable future. The public will not have access to the Capitol campus and the hearings and debate will occur online. TVW.org will serve as the medium between you and the legislative session. While you are bookmarking sites, do not miss washingtonvotes.org. You will see less bills this year. When it comes to priorities, the House and Senate Dems recently listed food purchasing assistance, childcare assistance, rent relief, and government grants or no interest loans for small businesses. On the other hand, Republicans have stressed the need for small business relief and aid for Washington’s rural communities. Closer to home, boaters and marine businesses have a role to play, too. There’s a bill to incentivize skipper-provided charter trips. Plus, there is some boater fatigue from footing the bill for 62

commercial and recreational boats out there with the $3 tax on each registration. This is a tough issue to solve, but there is a slight expectation that this issue will get attention in 2021. Another idea that could take hold involves a special tax on boats that cost over $100,000. Segueing into opinion expectations, I do not expect to see the derelict vessel funding issues resolved in this legislative session. I am optimistic that legislators will remember how disastrous the so-called luxury tax was in the 1990s on vessels. Now, let’s talk relationships and expectations. Jeff Angers, who runs the Center for Sportfishing Policy, said, “Peter, what I have noticed is that pre-existing relationships are more important than ever. If you want to start a new relationship, good luck, but it’s not going to happen.” When it comes to lobbyists and legislators, I suspect the same will be true. Fortunately, for boaters on the business, user, and recreational fishing side, you are well represented. The same all-star team will engage throughout session but formally (e.g. hearings) and informally through emails and texts. Thanks to these relationships and the saturation of emails and testimony that will result from access to hearings by the general public, legislators will curate their incoming email and prioritize the names they know and trust. If you would like to get to know your legislators in this zany session, let me know (Peter@nmta.net). The Boating Lobby Day will be on February 8. Tap into our pre-existing relationships to build one on your own. Expect impact when you know your lawmaker and your lawmaker knows you. Peter Schrappen is Northwest Marine Trade Association’s Government Affairs Director and the Clean Boating Foundation’s Executive Director. Additionally, he serves on the boards of the Boating Safety Advisory Council, Washington Boating Alliance, and U.S. Superyacht Association.

Ask Nigel BY NIGEL BARRON

Navigating Insurance Our boatyard is busier than ever. This increase is due to a few key factors. People are getting out and using their boats more often during COVID-19 times as a way to have socially distant outings with their family, boat owners are finally getting around to the upgrades they’ve been putting off, and still others may have found some of those underwater rocks and are coming in for bottom repairs. I once heard that there are two types of people: those who have run aground and those who are lying about never having done it. If you have the misfortune of hitting the bottom or something else just as hard with your boat, there’s a chance you’re going to make an insurance claim. Navigating marine insurance is just as important as charting a clear course. Take some time to find your policy and read it thoroughly before you actually need it. Are there geographic exclusions in your policy? Is your tender covered? If you keep your boat on fresh water, what about muskrats or other pesky animals? What is your deductible? Is towing covered? Freezing damage? It’s better to ask these questions in advance, before making your first insurance claim. But if something does happen, the most important thing to do is make sure everyone on board is safe. If the accident is severe, radio for assistance. When you know everyone is out of harm’s way, do what you can to minimize loss to the boat. If you ran aground, see if the boat is taking on water. Check the keel sump area, around the strut, and where the shaft enters the boat to see if you hit the running gear. Is the engine and running gear still operable? Many times in this situation, you can simply float off the rocks as the tide comes in. This requires patience and knowledge of the tide cycle. Things can get considerably worse if you have run aground at high tide. After you have the boat secured, write some notes while your memory is fresh. Your insurance company is going to want a statement to explain all the circumstances, including where the incident occurred. When you call your insurance company to start the claims process, also call your boatyard to schedule a haulout. As soon as the boat is in the yard, they’ll be able to start working on your estimate. One thing to keep in mind is that you are the boatyard customer. The insurance company does not typically pay the boatyard directly; they pay you, and you pay the boatyard. Once the yard has completed an initial estimate, you’ll send that to your insurance company. Look it over and make sure they have included all the things you found in your walk-through of the boat. The idea of the repair process is to return the vessel to a “pre-loss condition.” Depending on the size of the claim, the insurance company is likely to assign an adjuster or surveyor who will do a thorough investigation of the boat to make sure the estimate is complete and reasonable. Once that is settled, the adjuster will send a copy of the estimate to the insurance company to process. You, as the customer, sign the work order, pay a deposit, and pay the final bill. It’s not uncommon to file a supplement to the original estimate. It’s often quite hard to know the full extent of the damages until the repairs commence. The key phrase here is “hidden and undiscovered damage.” In these instances, the boatyard will notify the adjuster that they have found some additional repairs, and the adjuster will review the new damage and the supplemental estimate. As the work nears conclusion, the adjuster typically makes a final walk-through, as will you. Remember, you’re not the first person to do whatever it is that happened. The process from incident to claim to repairs to completion has many steps and never goes as fast as you want. Be patient. As we like to say when sail racing, “Let’s make only new mistakes!” Nigel Barron was born in England and developed his sea legs at an early age. He is currently the Project Manager at CSR Marine in Seattle where he has worked for 15 years as a rigger, then an installer, and now in his current role. He is also the captain of Zvi, a Reichel-Pugh designed and McConaghy-built custom race boat from Seattle. 66

Racing Sheet BY DOUG HANSEN

Vendee Globe & America’s Cup Updates Hydrofoil boats are the future and anyone who says different has their head in the sand. There I said it, I will not take it back, and I am not sorry. As someone who has spent considerable time on boats with lead hanging off the bottom, this was a tough realization. But the writing is on the wall, even if the wall is now made of carbon fiber. The technological developments over the past decade have brought material science into the world of sailing at a level that was impossible to comprehend only a short time ago. Now stronger, stiffer, and lighter than ever before, racing boats are pushing the limits of not only what is practical for wind-powered craft, but what is possible for humans to handle. At the top of the sport sit two extremely different yet curiously similar events, both of which represent the absolute technological and humanistic limit of sailing, not to mention the only form of international competition in the world today. We are, of course, talking about the America’s Cup and the Vendee Globe. Simply referred to as “The Cup,” the America’s Cup is the venerable king of international sport, outdoing any modern sporting trophy by a few hundred years at least. While it has always been a proving ground for the latest technologies, this go-around has turned it up a notch. The defending Kiwi team has taken to the water in a nearly experimental hydrofoil spaceship, which takes off quicker than anything coming out of a Boeing hanger these days. After almost two years of development, the first round of racing brought home just exactly what this new normal means. Triple-digit closing speeds, last second gybes, and skippers throwing around seventy-foot boats like bath toys firmly establishes what the future of sailing looks like. The Challenger series is slated to begin at the end of January, and this event will decide who will contest team New Zealand in the America’s Cup match itself.

Also currently happening in the far southern reaches of the world is the Vendee Globe, the nonstop, solo, round the world sailing race. Drama ensues as several of the prospected leaders have either dropped out or are making unfortunate pit stops for repairs relatively early in the race. The British favorite Alex Thompson, onboard the radical Hugo Boss, found himself at the dock in Cape Town after structural issues with the bow of his black and pink boat forced his retirement from the race. The top French team of Corum L’Epargne fared worse, with the dismasting of their brand-new boat only days out of the starting gate. They took refuge in the Canary Islands. Meanwhile, Yannick Bestaven leads the fleet with a commanding 360-mile gap to the second-place boats battling it out as the group rounds Cape Horn and re-enters the Atlantic Ocean. Racing Bestaven, his 2015 built boat, he has held a strong lead since working his way to the front during the troublesome Southern Ocean section of the race. After the carnage and subsequent thinning of the fleet, this lap of the world has proven to be a race for the veterans, with many in the top ten racing older (but tried and true) boats that have been put through their paces, with all the weak spots hammered out by their skippers and shoreside boat building teams. As the front runners near the proverbial home stretch along the South American coastline, it is still anyone’s race with boats that regularly average over twenty knots. The weather is anything but stable, with a minefield of high-pressure ridges and swirling north Atlantic lows that will surely cause a decent amount of French nail biting and cigarette smoking over the coming weeks. While most of the world’s international competitions are on hold due to COVID-19, it’s very cool that sailing is continuing to make waves and be a mechanism for humans to push further and faster even during these uncertain times. 69

International Ports of Call BY LORI EASTES

U.S. Virgin Islands St. Thomas is the gateway island of the U.S. Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. The accessibility and amenities of St. Thomas make it one of the most popular yachting destinations on the planet. The seemingly infinite islands surrounding Saint Thomas lie within a short distance of each other and offer many glamorous marinas. Below is a curated list of must-see experiences and events in St. Thomas and other U.S. Virgin Islands to add to your charter itinerary. St. Thomas is well known for sugar white beaches lined with bending palm trees, hidden rainforest waterfalls, and outstanding snorkeling spots bustling with marine life. The capital city of Charlotte Amalie, founded by the Danish in the 1600s, is a busy cruise ship port that features world renowned historic buildings including Blackbeard’s Castle, a watchtower built in 1679 that gives a nod to the region’s pirate history. Ascend the 99 steps of the castle, and you’ll be treated to a breathtaking panoramic view! It is really fun to peek in and out of the old brick buildings that were once home to the barrels of rum and exotic spices bound for Europe back in the day. As you travel through the lively city of Charlotte Amalie, you’ll find plenty of supermarkets and duty-free

72

shopping centers, making it a breeze to find any provisions your heart desires. Located on the harbor of Charlotte Amalie is Fort Christian, a 17th-century fort that is now a local history museum and also a must-see. The Crown Bay Marina is a full-service marina that is only 10 minutes from the international airport and an excellent starting point for your expedition at sea. If you’re cruising a larger superyacht, choose Yacht Haven Grande Marina and shopping complex. This marina was recently restored and transformed the island of St. Thomas into an upscale destination. When you’re ready to leave the traditional boutiques and luxury shops adorning the cobblestone streets on the island, cruise to Magen’s Bay, a more remote destination located on the north shore. This cozy cove provides an excellent anchoring spot, where deep relaxation can really occur! Take the Wave Runners out for a spin or discover the joy of relaxing while sipping cocktails from your floating island oasis. If your yacht is stocked with a wide array of inflatable and motorized toys, you’ll have days of fun activities and plenty of memories on the water.

73

When the sun sets, the Caribbean moon appears, and watching the moon dance across the Caribbean waters from a jump-up or a full moon party onboard your yacht is a must. There’s nothing quite like partying under a Caribbean moon in the Virgin Islands! I suggest listening to a steel band play, while preparing spicy jerk chicken and conch fritters in the galley. Trust me, this magical experience will be one you will cherish for years to come. From St. Thomas, I suggest a short cruise over to Saint John, where you’ll come upon a completely different world with most of the land and surrounding ocean conserved in The Virgin Islands National Park. The park spans over 5,000 acres and covers two-thirds of the island. Take some time to enjoy the scores of scenic hiking trails, numerous secluded coves, and broad bands of astonishing beaches. Caneel Bay is the preferred destination among locals for snorkeling and diving, as the warm ocean waters are teeming with marine life. You’ll enjoy the parrot fish, angel fish, and yellowtail snappers who make their home in the bay, and don’t be surprised if they swim right up to welcome 74

you in! There are some really interesting underwater wreckage sites that include sunken planes and boats, a perfect venue for diving and exploring the vibrant underwater landscapes. Popular festivities and festivals on the islands include Mardi Gras, Easter, and the Virgin Island Carnival. Watch Saint Croix, another island in the U.S. Virgins, erupt in a riot of color, music, and dancing in the streets when the Mardi Gras parade meanders through the island to lovely Cane Bay. Attend the annual carnival on St. Thomas where “Mocko Jumbies” dress up as spirits and glide through the streets on giant stilts as steel bands play. Enjoy the enclave of natural beauty in the U.S. Virgin Islands. It is the perfect mix of everything and nothing; excellent for those wanting to sample what the Caribbean has to offer from its flash to its natural side. With all its breathtaking scenery and lush green foliage, it has become a preferred destination for weddings, anniversaries, and special birthdays. Or for any occasion that you’d like to celebrate in one of the most beautiful cruising destinations in the world!
