I grew up on farm. Well, not really a “farm farm,” but we had a horse, some ducks and chickens, a goat or two, and some llamas. Our home was near Martha Lake, Schelleen Rathkopf which is just 20 miles north of downtown Seattle. Today, the area is considered a suburb of Seattle, but back then, with pastures and animals running about, it was the deep country in our minds. My Mom felt strongly that all her animals should have water to play in and she always had a kiddy pool set up just for the animals. When my Dad suggested we get a boat (so we could play, too), I remember that she wasn’t too keen on the idea at ﬁrst. With two adults and four kids, where were the goats supposed to sit? Help Sought for Kelp Beds in Puget Sound Kelp may be considered by some boaters as an annoying weed that can hamper navigation and tangle propellers. But for marine organizations in the Puget Sound area of Washington state, the reduction of kelp beds in the Pacific Northwest is a sign of a threatened ecosystem. To help combat habitat loss of kelp, a group of federal, state and local government agencies; nonprofits; and tribes have developed the Puget Sound Kelp Conservation and Recovery Plan to monitor the health of this vital algae and to raise awareness about the loss of kelp in the Sound and throughout the world. Stakeholders in the plan include the Northwest Straits Commission; National Marine Fisheries Service; Puget Sound Restoration Fund; Washington state Department of Natural Resources (DNR); Marine Agronomics; and many others. According to the Kelp Plan, the health of kelp beds is tied closely to the vitality of Chinook salmon and the Southern Resident orca populations in the Puget Sound waters. Kelp, which grows into “forests” as deep as 250 feet, is a foundational part of the food chain that feeds many types of fish and marine mammals. The thick forests also provide a protective hiding and breeding place for ocean creatures. Findings from a study by the Washington DNR said that kelp forests have been disappearing worldwide for several decades. Puget Sound, according to DNR, has lost an estimated 60% of its kelp forests since the 1870s. Some of the loss can be attributed to rising ocean temperatures, marine pollution, and destruction by heavy vessel traffic in major sea lanes. One pillar of the Kelp Plan is to inform boaters of the damage caused by high-speed propellers, as well as carelessly dropped anchors that can tear out the roots of kelp beds. Nautical News Swiftsure Yacht Race Cancelled in 2021 As the COVID-19 pandemic crisis escalated at the end of 2020, the Swiftsure Committee and the board of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club reluctantly decided to cancel the 2021 Swiftsure International Yacht Race. Race officials have set their sights for 2022 to bring back the classic sailing race. In a joint email sent to all Swiftsure competitors, race co-chairs Andrew McBride and Randy Diamond expressed their “deepest regret” about the cancellation, saying the decision was made “due to the significant probability that public health restrictions due to COVID-19 will be such that it will not be possible to run the event in a manner that will preserve the event’s long-standing integrity.” Since 1930, Swiftsure has been the premier long-distance race in the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia area. Starting and ending in

Victoria, British Columbia, there are five courses set in the Strait of Juan De Fuca. Swiftsure is deemed an international race because the midpoint markers for the four long courses are in U.S. waters. The race occurs during Memorial Day weekend and is most popular with racers from British Columbia and Washington state. Due to COVID-19, the border closures between the USA and Canada would significantly impact the race course logistics, as well as participation by U.S. citizens. Tacomaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tall Ship Odyssey in Need of Funds Tacomaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 82-year-old tall ship, Odyssey, sailed into the slacks waters of the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to cancelled sailings and sharply reduced donations, and now is struggling to stay afloat. The nonprofit that manages the historic vessel had 180 days of sailing scheduled and major fundraisers planned for 2020 that did not happen because of COVID. Adding to its financial woes, the 90-foot wooden sailboat, licensed by the Coast Guard as a sub-Chapter T passenger vessel, entered drydock in December for a required annual inspection and overhaul. While annual donations usually account for the costs of annual repairs, these funds have dried up in the wake the pandemic restrictions. For the last 30-plus years, volunteer Odyssey Sea Scout crews have hosted weeklong paid charter cruises in the San Juan Islands for youth groups nationwide. During the school year, the boat also becomes a floating classroom, teaching public high school students about sailing and marine science. To keep the programs afloat, the not-for-profit Tacoma Youth Marine Foundation (YMF) is now seeking support from boating aficionados during this time of need. Armstrong Marine Rebrands as Brix Marine Port Angeles, Washington-based Armstrong Marine USA, builder of high-performance aluminum catamarans and workboats, has changed its name to Brix Marine. Founded in Canada in 1991, the company relocated to Port Angeles in 2001 before joining the Bryton Marine Group in 2017. The name Brix is a scientific term for the measurement of sweetness in liquid. The Brix team said it will broaden and diversify its portfolio of welded aluminum boats to include the custom recreational market that’s currently in high demand. Absolute’s Navetta 64 tops Best of Boats 2020 In November, Italian boat-builder Absolute took home the “Best for Travel” award for its Navetta 64 “Absolute Pathfinder” luxury yacht during the 2020 Best of Boats awards ceremony in Berlin, Germany. After a much anticipated wait, Ocean Alexander has unveiled the latest addition to its Explorer superyacht series, the 27 Explorer (27E). Designed for long stays aboard, the 27E’s interiors are large and comfortable with many luxurious finishes. Ample seating areas in the salon, dining, and sky lounge are complemented with a wet bar, a custom-made grill, and an optional jacuzzi. The fiberglass-hulled 27E is built for socializing and entertaining with family and friends. One of the most noticeable features is the hydraulic swim platform. With fold-outside-terrace wings, the platform expands to nearly 225 square feet of space to hold a 32

2021 ABSOLUTE NAVETTA 58 For those looking for the luxurious accommodations of a mega-yacht in a more compact vessel, the new Absolute Navetta 58 model provides the best in comfort and functionable livability. 2005 50’ FRENCH & WEBB CUSTOM WINGS Inspired by John Alden’s Malabar series, this sailing yacht was designed by C.W. Paine, representing a delicate balance between traditional aesthetics and modern technology. Wings was built in 2005 by French & Webb in Belfast, Maine, using the best materials and components available from around the world. All the exterior wood trim and fixtures were made from a single teak log, sourced from Asia to assure perfect grain and color match. The well-appointed interior is functional for both living aboard and extended cruising. The main salon, located amidships, has a U-shaped, upholstered settee with curved seat backs, and a large, varnished dining table to port. The elegant galley boasts ample Corian countertops, a high-capacity Seafrost refrigerator/freezer, a double stainless steel sink, and a Force 10, four-burner cook stove/oven. 2002 57’ CARVER PILOTHOUSE Appropriately for its name, this Carver 57 Pilothouse gives both captain and guests commanding views via a raised pilothouse and dinette areas. With ample room for day cruises, parties, or live-aboard families, the yacht comfortably sleeps six people, plus two extra hideaway berths in the salon. Decked out with plenty of designer features, the interior includes a full width master stateroom amidships, offering an island queen berth, built-in storage, an en suite master head with a separate shower, and dedicated washer/dryer stack. The VIP guest cabin has an island berth on the centerline, built-in storage, and private access to the guest/day head. A bunk guest cabin offers outboard single-stacked berths across the companionway from the guest head. The upper deck has been made into an all-weather living area with a custom hardtop and a full, clear curtain enclosure encompassing the boat deck, flybridge, and upper helm. The main deck begins with the pilothouse consisting of the main helm, a mounted captain’s chair, an L-shaped guest settee, and a customized hi-lo table. Aft and down in the main cabin is the galley, open to the salon to allow for easy conversation while entertaining. The galley offers several luxury

features, including a Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer with an icemaker; a three-burner electric stove; a combo convection/ microwave oven; and two galley sinks. The interior has been recently updated, with satin and gloss cherry cabinetry, custom wood salon mini blinds, Corian countertops in blue lapis lazuli-style stone, and several nautical-themed designer touches throughout. Entertainment features in the salon include a pop-up, 40-inch flat screen TV, a satellite TV antenna, and a Harmon Kardon stereo system with salon and cockpit speakers. Aft doors open to the cockpit, with a padded aft bolster, and a transom door to the large, integral swim platform equipped with a custom table and BBQ. Twin Volvo TAMD-74 diesel inboard engines provide a combined 1,000 horsepower and a top speed of 22 knots; cruising speed is 16 knots. Navigation equipment includes a Raymarine E-140 radar, interfaced with GPS, chart plotter, and depth sounder, as well as autopilot with remote. Other equipment includes bow and stern thrusters, a wireless yacht control system, control stations at the pilothouse and flybridge helms, electronic engine controls, a hydraulic wheel steering, and trim tabs.

THE US CHALLENGER AT THE 36TH

The New York Yacht Club is counting on a little magic and is determined to return the America’s Cup trophy to its showcase. For almost two decades, there has been an empty spot in the esteemed yacht club’s shrine for the “Auld Mug,” which once shined there for 132 years. One of the foremost yacht clubs in the world, the New York Yacht Club plans to win America’s Cup in New Zealand at the sailing race’s 36th competition this March. The New York Yacht Club first won the America’s Cup in 1851, and proudly held on to it until 1983, when Liberty, skippered by Dennis Conner, lost to the Australian team. It was a shock that reverberated around the sailing world. When Australia II, skippered by John Bertrand and representing the Royal Perth Yacht Club, took the Cup to the Land Down Under, it ended both the U.S. domination of the racing series and the longest winning streak in sports history. To reclaim the oldest and most elite award in sail racing, the New York Yacht Club, along with Bella Mente Racing and Quantum Racing, formed the American Magic team in 2017. The team gets its name from a combination of America, the first boat to win the America’s Cup, and Magic, the first boat to defend the Cup in 1870. The team will be racing the AC75 PATRIOT with an illustrious crew against the current defender Emirates Team New Zealand as well as several other top racing teams from around the world. The three team principals—John J. “Hap” Fauth, Doug DeVos, Roger Penske—are all members of the NYYC with impressive collective experience. If there was ever a U.S. challenger dream team, this would be it. Fauth is a three-time Maxi 72 World Champion with his Bella Mente Racing program (featured on the December cover of Northwest Yachting magazine). DeVos is a principal of the Quantum Racing team that has won the TP52 World Championship six times since 2008. Then there’s Penske, a name synonymous with motorsports that have produced 584 major race wins, 650 pole positions, and 39 championships including 18 Indianapolis 500 victories. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. American Magic’s team principals selected one of the world’s best sailors to lead the team: Skipper and Executive Director Terry Hutchinson. Hutchinson, a two-time U.S. Sailing Rolex Yachtsman of the Year and 16-time world champion is a veteran America’s Cup competitor, who

has competed in five America’s Cup cycles. As a tactician for Emirates Team New Zealand in 2007, Hutchinson helped the team reach the America’s Cup match. Alongside Hutchinson in that match was Kiwi Dean Barker, who will also be onboard with Hutchinson this go as helmsman. The American Magic sailing team is comprised of rock stars in the sport, along with nearly 100 additional members, who refuse to be outworked and are intent to win back the oldest trophy in international sport. Obviously, a lot has changed in boat design since NYYC last held the Cup. Teams are now racing AC75s, which seem more like flying machines than boats, reaching speeds upwards of 50 knots. The principal designer of A merican Magic’s fleet of AC75s is Marcelino Botin, from Botin Partners in Bristol, Rhode Island. The first test boat built for American Magic was known as AM38 or the Mule. From there, the AC75 prototype DEFIANT came into the picture, followed by still more performance upgrades to the hull, foils, sails, and systems with PATRIOT. The team is counting on PATRIOT to be their ride to win the challenger position. “You have to make sure that you follow your own design path, and that’s what we’ve done with PATRIOT,” said Marcelino Botin, the day the yacht was launched in Auckland on October 16, 2020. “We have a philosophy of the boat that we need, which was developed over the last few years. The boat we’ve produced is our best interpretation of that way of thinking, and of our way of sailing the AC75.” As the world watches, challengers from the United States, Italy, and the United Kingdom will compete for the esteemed position to take on the kiwis March 6–15, 2021. The hope is to see PATRIOT, with its dark navy hull, blue sails with red accents, and NYYC burgee flying, leading the way and finally bringing the Cup back home.

When I started a family, I took my own two kids to the Seattle Boat Show. In those early years, I’d hear the “how much longer” chorus after about an hour of being inside. Now that they are older, their interest has grown, and that hour has stretched into a full day. Part of what they love is the freedom to explore on their own, play hide and seek with their friends, crawl all over the boats, and collect swag from the exhibitors. I have to admit I enjoy some of that, too. However, what I like most is seeing so much of the boating industry under one roof, the spontaneous interactions of bumping into old friends, and even waiting in that long line for a Dixie cup sized pour of wine, as long as I was there enjoying boats with my family and friends. Yet, nothing seems to remain the same in the time of COVID-19, and after 73 years, the Seattle Boat Show has been reimagined. This year will be a break with tradition as the Seattle Boat Show goes virtual due to pandemic restrictions. Though the show will be void of that “new boat smell,” we all owe a debt of gratitude to the show organizers, the Northwest Marine Trade Association (NMTA), who proclaimed that “The show must go on!” They have worked hard to make this digital show accessible and to provide us with a sense of normalcy while offering a virtual experience. I really like the production’s tagline: Seattle Boat Show Connected: Start Online, End Up on the Water. This is brilliant! It completely encapsulates the mission of the show and reminds us that after we spend some time online, we will all be better prepared and jazzed to get out on the water where we belong. Resolutions Last year, I spent New Year’s Eve on my boat. I was late getting to the dock, and as I passed through the yacht club parking lot, I remember being hailed down by three club organizers. Turns out, the boat lined up to take the supplies to a local outstation, where a sold-out cruise was headed, sailed away without the goodies! Next thing you know, I was hauling forty pounds of mashed potatoes, eighty pounds of white linens, and numerous boxes of decorations and flowers for a great New Year’s Eve party. When we arrived, the dock was packed with boats, and eventually the dinner tables were overflowing with costumed party-goers. As usual, by 10:30 pm, I wondered if I would make it until midnight? Before I knew it, it was 2:30 am, and I was sipping a Grand Marnier on the dock with my friends, comparing New Year’s resolutions! I make them, but I oftentimes don’t stick to them; all the same, it made me think, how did this all get started? I made a note in the logbook, and here I am one year later! The origins of New Year’s resolutions date back 4,000 years to the Babylonians (who also happened to be boaters). They hosted a 12-day party, where they promised to pay back debts and return items that they had borrowed. Early Christians took it a step further to include thinking about one’s past mistakes and resolving to do better. New Year’s resolutions used to remind me of a brand new notebook in school; with the very first blank page holding so much promise. But alas, as the school year progressed, everything got messy. Life settles in, the years speed by, and the resolutions simply come and go. That said, I’m thinking that 2021 may just be the exception. There is a likely chance that most people in the world, boaters or not, may make and keep very similar resolutions going into the new year. For example, I will resolve to stay home, but if I do go out, it will only be for essentials, work, or to go boating. I will wear a mask, wash 62

my hands, and stay within a safe distance of other people. I will not host large gatherings on the beach or dock, and no dinners for twelve on the back deck. These are all attainable, but nowhere near what we had discussed at the beginning of 2020! These are “good for the world” resolutions, but how about a true boating resolution? I want to make a point of going somewhere different this year. I have been boating in the same waters for twenty odd years, and there aren’t many hidden spots that I haven’t found. I do have some favorites, like Connover Cove on Wallace Island, Tribune Bay on Hornby Island, Buccaneer Bay on North Thormanby Island, or Cabbage Island. My favorite hike is from Deep Bay to Home Bay on Jedidiah Island. This past year, most of my boating was to a local outstation, which was fantastic and super easy under the circumstances. However, my best-loved afternoon is spent anchoring in shallow water and rowing to shore, with my toes in the sand and a good book in hand. Let’s hope our good behavior pays off, and we can all start traveling again. I guess for the next little while, we will just be staying close to home or talking about where we will be boating. I’m going to break from tradition and make a couple of conventional resolutions this year. Be it resolved, I will register my under-the-tree, gift-to-me EPIRB, I will check my MMSI number on my very old VHF, and I may purchase a fitness tracker—but nothing is in stone! The Top 5 Hot Spots to Fish this Winter With the holidays in the rearview mirror, it’s time to focus on pursuing winter Chinook salmon in the Puget Sound region. Central Puget Sound from Kingston south to northern tip of Vashon Island will open for hatchery Chinook (often known as blackmouth for their dark gum line) from Jan. 1 through March 31. In the southern Puget Sound waters south of the Narrows Bridge, this is a year-round fishing affair. Winter is an exciting time as Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) historical data shows Puget Sound salmon fishing can be more productive than in summer. The added bonus is the protected inner waterway makes it an ideal place to often hide from prevailing winds and rough seas. The vast majority of winter Chinook are delay released from local hatcheries and spend their entire lives in the fertile waters of Puget Sound. Here, they gorge on herring and candlefish, their primary source of food, before spawning as three and four-year-old mature fish. All winter, fishermen are intended to target abundant hatchery-marked Chinook – those that are identified by a missing adipose fin – while protecting wild salmon stocks that must be released. An important factor to take into consideration is the chance of an early closure or mid-season pause in the central Puget Sound fishery, especially if it’s productive. WDFW plans to closely monitor the totalChinook encounter guideline of about 3,751 fish with the hopes of keeping it open as long as possible. “We’d like to hit the pause button once we approach about 50 percent of the total encounters and reopen it when we see bigger fish and better weather in March,” said Carl Nyman, the Puget Sound Charter Boat Association president. “This way we can avoid a situation where (WDFW) close(s) the fishery early.” In my opinion, this is why you need to launch your boat and go fishing right now, while taking in the wonders of this special place in which we live. Here’s a list of my top spots to catch fish: Jefferson Head/Kingston: The vast underwater bar is about two miles wide and wraps around two key landmarks: President’s Point on the north end, and Point Jefferson to the south near a wooden dock. The key here is finding the baitfish on the sandy bottom in water 90 to 64

200-plus feet deep. It’s a short boat ride of about four miles from the Shilshole and Edmonds marinas. Allen Bank near Blake Island: This is a relatively easy place to fish during winter, and the outgoing tide is best. The drop-off ledge (80 to 225 feet deep) starts on the southeast of Blake Island and extends south to the northeastern tip of Vashon Island near the black/white channel marker. Southworth/Manchester: The outgoing tide is most favorable at Southworth, and the drop off (90 to 250 feet) starts near the ferry landing and heads in a northerly direction along the row of houses dotting the shoreline. At Manchester, concentrate efforts off the fuel dock, where the sandy bottom is gently sloping with no distinct ledge or drop-off points. It is a good mooching spot in 90 to 150 feet of water. Fox Island area: The southeastern portion of the island is the prime area to fish. My favorite location is Point Gibson, near the “Big Rock” on the shoreline, during an incoming tide. Fox Point is best on an outgoing tide where the bottom drops from 90 to 200-plus feet, and winter Chinook tend to lurk on the deeper ledge. Also troll the northwestern shoreline heading west into Hale Passage. A public fishing pier (known as the Concrete Dock) on the southeast side can also be good an hour or two before and after an incoming tide. Shilshole Bay to Richmond Beach: Meadow Point, located just north of the Shilshole Bay Marina near the green buoy, is a popular location. The entire shoreline from Richmond Beach south to Carkeek Park has a gentle sloping sandy bottom, and can be decent if baitfish are present. Also don’t overlook the Edmonds Oil Dock, just north of Richmond Beach! Mark Yuasa is a longtime fishing and outdoors writer. Priorities and Consensus How about starting the year with a case study that lays out all the different aspects that go into successful legislation? Let’s begin with the ingredients of any successful legislation: a concept that’s a priority and consensus around that priority. The organizational priority this goaround has to do with easing restrictions around boating as they relate to charter boats that are skippered. The consensus is a work in progress. Countless meetings with lawmakers, ports, and chambers of commerce are on a rinse and repeat cycle to ensure there are no surprises when the legislative session begins on January 11. Hopefully, the Marine Tourism Bill 2.0 does not become a tall poppy that sticks out and gets cut down. The lower the profile of the bill (the smaller the poppy), the more likely we make it to another day. The rule of thermodynamics apply here, too. Bodies in motion tend to stay in motion. If getting legislation passed is a sales process, which it is, then we are only in the first third of this process. That’s the predisposition piece. Right now, a nascent coalition is building and bringing in support. We are predisposing lawmakers to the ask, which is also known as “presenting the opportunity,” so they are ready to go when the session starts. From there, the bill needs to move out of the committee and through the state’s legislative system. What else is going on in boating? Snohomish County has the makings of a classic conflict between neighbors and boaters. Their parks department called a community meeting to hear from all sides on an issue involving loud music and waves coming from wake-surfing boats. Over 100 people attended this Zoom meeting. It was the first of several meetings, and I plan to stay actively engaged to help avoid any sort of boating bans. I wouldn’t be surprised to see more of these types of issues come to the forefront. While COVID-19 has changed how we interact, it has also brought more people into boating. Of course, that’s what the industry has long sought, but with these new faces come 66

new and often, younger ways of boating. Plus, they are not yet as street smart as they need to be. And you don’t have to take my word for the new boaters out there. By August, new boat retail sales were up 8 percent from 2019, marking the highest sales volume in 13 years, according to Vicky Yu, senior business intelligence director for the National Marine Manufacturers Association. As we look nationally, first-time boat buyers made up 31 percent of new boat sales through September, a figure that represents about 90 percent of 2020’s increase in sales. The percentage of first-time buyers was up from 26 percent the year prior. Last year is tracking to see roughly 25,000 more new boat purchases compared to 2019 — and more than 24,000 of those can be attributed to first-time buyers. Whew, that’s a lot of boaters. With new boaters, come more interactions and chances for things to go sideways. We shall see how this one plays out in Snohomish. The ongoing conflicts around Andrews Bay on Lake Washington, notorious for neighborhood complaints due to the proximity of the bay to Seattle’s Seward Park neighborhood, has given me practice to approach the Snohomish lakes issue. After all, it’s the same recipe: Priorities and consensus. This time, unfortunately, we are on the wrong side, as it’s the priority of the neighbors who have consensus that the current state of boating is untenable on a few of the lakes in Snohomish. Soaping Up In Marina Showers “I don’t need a marina shower; I’ll just shower on the boat!” is something we often hear from new boaters. The realities of moisture control onboard, tight head showers, and sourcing hot water inevitably makes showering ashore much more attractive. When cruisers get together, we often recommend our favorite marina showers to each other the way dirt dwellers dish on their favorite eatery. The Waggoner Cruising Guide understands this, and even includes descriptions of shower facilities with their marina reviews. The issue of marina showers recently came up in our Women Who Sail (and Power Cruise) Pacific NW Facebook group. This group represents a community with vast and cumulative cruising experience in the Pacific Northwest. The question I posed to the group was: “What are the most important things in a great marina shower?” While cost was mentioned, it was no where near the top of this list that is ranked in order of importance.

11. Good Floor Drain: Standing in a slimy puddle of water is well, just gross. 12. Moisture Ventilation: Experienced boaters are quite familiar with mildew created in humid environments, and are quick to spot (and smell) it in marina showers. 13. Spacious and ADA accessible 14. Change Machine 15. Soap Dispenser: A shampoo, conditioner, and soap dispenser is awesome on that one day toiletries are left behind.

1. Cleanliness: This was by far the most important factor, especially now with COVID-19. Some in the group noted they plan their showers around the scheduled cleaning times. Having visible daily cleaning log sheets, posted near the showers and initialed by staff following a cleaning, is something that many in the group find really reassuring. 2. Security: Key cards or a key code on the door that are changed frequently. 3. Privacy: Full-sized doors on the individual shower stalls, with good latches, rather than a flimsy shower curtain where someone can barge in. 4. Instant Hot Water: It’s frustrating to spend money for a shower and then spend half the time waiting for the hot water to finally arrive through the pipes. 5. Free: Access to marina showers for moorage tenants. 6. No Time Limit 7. Dressing Area: Separate dry area with hooks for clothes and shelves for toiletries. 8. Drain Tiles: Interlocking drain tiles on the floor outside the shower so you can step out with dry feet. 9. Hooks: Quality hooks for clothes within reach of the shower, but not close enough to get splashed. 10. Heated Room: Especially if the hot water is slow to start.

Cap Sante Marina: I love the new credit card payment system in each shower. No more trying to scrounge quarters to get a shower. Or even worse, trying to find more quarters with shampoo still in your hair!

Here are some of my favorite marina showers: Shilshole Bay Marina: The new shower facilities just opened, and they are spacious and well lit. Solar panel arrays on the roof are expected to generate about 70% of the building’s power requirements. Bell Harbor Marina: The showers include a temperature gauge!

Port Sidney Marina: The showers are attractive, warm, and include a comfortable lounge area. Cow Bay Marina, Prince Rupert: The shower building is right on the dock, and includes laundry so you can do shower and laundry at the same time. I recently received a question from a customer about upgrading his electronics. He wanted to know what projects he could likely do himself, and what sorts of things should be left to the professionals. There are really two parts to updating the electronics on your boat— whether it’s sail or power—the part that is in the water and the part out of the water. The answer also depends on how much you are upgrading your system. In this case, the customer has an older system with a separate speed and depth transducer. These days, unless you’re working on a higher-end racing boat, you can get most of what you need out of a single triducer. It’s called a triducer because within the one instrument, you have speed, depth, and temperature sensors. Often with systems providing independent speed and depth, the housing for the transducer is different, and the boat needs a haulout to replace it. I’m not a fan of extra holes in a boat. So, I typically advocate glassing over one of them. It’s nice to get the transducer as close to centerline as possible, particularly with a sailboat as it makes the speed more accurate from tack-to-tack. One new device that I’ve been impressed with is the Airmar DST-810 transducer. For sailors, it allows for heel-compensated speed, something you used to only get with a high-end processor. It also means the transducer does not have to be on centerline. If you have a sailboat, chances are you’re going to replace the wind instrument with the new electronics package. This is an ideal time for the mast to come out, and perhaps run new wires and convert mast lights to LED. Choosing new electronics comes down to what you feel comfortable with, as they all pretty much do the same thing. Ask the people you boat with what they have and if they like it. Find someone that recently installed new electronics, and ask what they might do differently if they could start over. If you’re starting from scratch, many retailers feature several brands all in one place. Once you’ve settled on a brand, the next step is to figure out how much to add. Do you want radar? If so, how big and powerful? Do you want AIS? What kind— receive or receive and transmit? Do you want sonar or fish finding? Do you want an autopilot integrated into the system? In laying out a system on your boat, think about how you use your electronics. Plotters are the most expensive part. Do you use the plotter at the upper helm or the nav station? The days of a display

simply showing depth or speed are behind us. Displays will now show any information on the system. The major brands also now have Wi-Fi built in, so you can always use a tablet, like an iPad, as a second plotter. Think also about the sizes of the displays. How much work will it take to make the new displays look clean at the nav station or the dash? Sometimes it’s easier to get a new wood panel and start again. Otherwise a trim ring will work if the holes don’t line up. Generally, new displays are more glass and less plastic, so a new 9-inch display has a bigger viewable area than an old 9-inch display. Most people just want to remove the old stuff, and leave the new installations to the professionals. Experienced customers may want to run the wires, but let the professionals cut in the new displays. Before considering an electronics upgrade, the most important decision is what you want your system to do. After that, decide whether to get a pro to run wires, connect power, and calibrate. The Sea of Cortez The Sea of Cortez is one of the most underrated yachting destinations on the planet. Warm weather and an unique landscape outlined by the clearest salt water make sailing here an exotic but accessible experience. Combine the allure of the Galapagos with a quick and easy flight to a place that is nearly an extension of California, and you will have the Sea of Cortez. Separating the Baja California peninsula from the Mexico mainland, the Sea of Cortez is a narrow, largely sheltered haven teeming with sea life. This body of water is an aquarium of over 2,900 species of fish and mammals, earning it UNSESCO World Heritage status. Explore the water’s biodiversity, which includes gentle whale sharks, curious sea lions, and fleeting manta rays, below the hull line while a wide variety of birds soar above. When yachting on these pristine waters, you will feel a strong connection to the beauty and wonder of the natural world. The landscape itself is littered with hidden coves, large bays, steep cliffs stained with red volcanic rock, black basalt, and sandstone. 74

Growing rock formations add mystery to this strange blue-green body of water. The ocean’s colors appear painted, an ideal backdrop for an unforgettable yachting vacation. Sculpted by the hands of Mother Nature, the Sea of Cortez is a mesmerizing display of azure water teeming with wildlife. A Sea of Cortez Itinerary For the first stop, I recommend La Paz. Unlike the touristy vacation destination of Cabo San Lucas, La Paz is a much more authentic and peaceful city. The serene Bay of La Paz is one of the top diving destinations in the world due to its many reefs and exquisite biodiversity. The area attracts whale watchers, hikers, scuba divers, and adventurers from all over the world. The natural beauty of sandy beaches and fiery sunsets light up the islands and leave everyone wanting more. From December to April, whales migrate to this area for the mating season, making it the high season. From La Paz, I’d head north to Bahia Balandra, a secluded bay

characterized by a special marine microclimate. The conservation area is glowing white with fine feathered sand, which stands out against the dark and stark cliffs. The shallow water is warmed to high temperatures from the sun, forming a truly decadent natural spa for deep relaxation. Playa Balandra is a perfect place for a beach picnic and watching the dolphins out in the distance. Travel a small distance north and discover Isla Espiritu Santo. Regarded as the most beautiful island in the Sea of Cortez, centuries of wind and water have carved dramatic cliffs into the volcanic strata of the island. The adventurous can be found kayaking around the mountainous terrain of Isla Espiritu Santo, where the breathtaking views, combined with turquoise water glistening underneath, are truly spectacular. Whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s white powdery sand or bright blue water, Playa Ensenada Grande is also a must-see for those searching for paradise. Virtually untouched by man, Ensenada Grande is unlike anything else

in the world. Enjoy a beachside picnic with all of your favorite foods, such as a fresh fruit, salad, sandwiches, or a charcuterie board paired with your favorite wine. Bremerton, Washington Mention Bremerton to Northwest boaters and most envision a U.S. Navy town. The city is home to both the Naval Base Kitsap and the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. A mothballed fleet of decommissioned Navy vessels watches over Bremerton’s waterfront. In addition to the strong naval presence, the city undertook a revitalization project several years ago that included the waterfront community and marina. Today, Bremerton has much to offer visiting boaters, while not forgetting its past. The Bremerton Marina offers generous fairways and oversize finger piers, 221 permanent tenant berths, as well as room for 80 – 100 guest boats, gated security, 30A/120V and 50A/240V power, water, restrooms and showers, laundry, garbage/recycling, dockside pumpout, and Wi-Fi. The nearest fuel dock is 1.5 miles across Sinclair Inlet at Port Orchard Marina. At the top of the gangway is the Louis Mentor Boardwalk, lined with flowers, water features, sculptures, restaurants, and tributes to the Navy and shipyard workers. The boardwalk meanders along the marina and waterfront and is also the site of weekend art walks and other city-hosted activities. Near the boardwalk is the Kitsap Conference Center Plaza, which houses not only the conference center but the Harborside Market, a Starbucks, Subway, and several other takeout restaurants. If takeout is not your thing, I recommend El Balcon for authentic Mexican and Salvadoran cuisine. For a burger, it is Axe & Arrow Gastropub, Kama’Aina Grill for Hawaiian fare, and Umami Kitchen for Japanese and Korean dishes. There’s also an Anthony’s Homeport overlooking the marina and Sinclair Inlet. As you head for town, wander through the impressive Harborside Fountain Park, which features five large synchronized copper-ringed fountains, wading pools, and lush landscaping. During warmer months, children enjoy playing in the pulsating water. The space is also home to Building 50, the old Bremerton Navy Shipyard Administration building built in 1910 and included on the National Register of Historic Places. Today it houses the Puget Sound Navy Museum, which tells the story of the Pacific Northwest naval 76

heritage. Out front of the museum is the large submarine sail of the USS Parche, the most highly decorated ship in U.S. history, known for her top-secret espionage operations. Strolling up Pacific Avenue, you will find the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard Memorial Plaza, which pays tribute to different eras in the shipyard’s history including Women Workers of World War I, WWII shipbuilding, and today’s shipyard workers. The plaza is filled with sculptures and water features that commemorate the vital role of the shipyard. Amongst the boutiques and specialty shops in downtown, visitors will also find the Aurora Valentinetti Puppet Museum offering guided tours for families and features a puppet-making workshop. Kitsap County Historical Museum is located across the street and includes displays of an 19th century schoolroom, cabin, and saloon. Spend an afternoon going back to the 1850s and learn the ways of the pioneer life. To the west, chocolate lovers will delight with a visit to Amy’s Decadent Chocolates, “Cashew Delights” and old-fashion caramel are just a few of their specialties. Back at the marina, the former Pacific Fleet destroyer USS Turner Joy serves as a portion of the marina’s breakwater. The ship are maintained in its original condition, and public tours inside the crew quarters, the boiler room, and gun towers are available. Another must-see on your visit to Bremerton is the All-Veteran’s Memorial commemorating the Vietnam POWs. Bremerton’s amenities and quality of life is what makes visitors smile. Plot a course for Bremerton and see it for yourself!
