Summer Adventures
Creative Director Lou Maxon LIFE AWAITS UNDER THE SEA. PHOTO BY ROYAL GALAPAGOS
Something about summer brings out the adventurer in all of us, doesn’t it? It’s the urge to get dirty, dive in the water, dream big, and discover parts unknown. Thus, as we warmly welcome the month of June, this issue charts a course for sailing, cruising, exploring, and yes, adventuring on the water all season long. Perhaps no one embodies an intrepid explorer more than Stockton Rush, founder of Everett-based OceanGate Inc. Rush is a driving force behind the company’s desire to further oceanic discovery, and this month, he and the OceanGate team are embarking on an expedition like none other: to catalog the wreckage of RMS Titanic with the aid of their innovative submersible. An in-depth look into this fascinating endeavor and its many local ties can be found on pages 48-57. There’s so much more to explore: Starting on page 58, writer Emily Molina takes a peek back at the valorous history of tall ship Odyssey and into the movement to help her sail again so she can continue to play host to impactful youth programming. Worth Avenue Yachts takes us on an exotic charter cruise through the Galapagos Islands in Port of Call (pages 84-85), and our own Doug Hansen reports in from Sailing Week in Antigua on page 76, a true bucket list destination for racers. And for those with adventurous palates, be sure to shake up James O. Fraioli’s latest cocktail concoction: the beet juice-infused Bloody Mary that beckons from Sea Fare on pages 80-81.

Heart & Soul Editor’s Note: Eva Seelye’s “Soul SEASTR” feature from our April issue about finding healing through a new women’s paddling group received an outpouring of love and support online, as well as this heartfelt thank you from story’s central figure, Erica Lichty. “Thank you @evangelea for emailing me back so long ago...I had seen an article by Eva in Northwest Yachting regarding paddling 101 in an old issue I found on a fishing boat in Mex...I emailed her as soon as I was back in the states and our back and forth led to this wonderful article... thank you so very much Eva for having faith in me and my vision. Thank you @ nwyachting for giving us a voice in the water community….thank you Pinkfin, u ROCK @pinkfinphotos…..and thank you to all the SEASTRS who open themselves up to so much possibility.” -Erica Lichty
[ DOGS ON DECK ]
Pearl’s Newest Pal Editor’s Note: Meet Hattie, the cuter than cute canine often spotted “working” aboard the new special events vessel, Pink Bateau, highlighted in this month’s The Current on page 32. Rumor has it, Hattie runs a pretty tight ship, much like our own Pearl does at the NWY office.
[ INSIDE THE ISSUE ]
Back & Forth Editor’s Note: Over the course of her research for this month’s feature on the 84-year-old
Odyssey sailboat (see pages 58-63), writer Emily Molina stumbled on a hidden gem in the archives: A poster of the May 2004 Northwest Yachting cover featuring none other than Odyssey herself.

[ SUMMER CLASSIC ]
Downtown Sailing Series, Parkinson’s Race Comes to Elliott Bay It’s time to go back to the bay (Elliott Bay, that is) on Thursdays for Seattle’s much anticipated annual collection of sailboat racing events—the Downtown Sailing Series. The weekly series, held at Elliott Bay Marina, has chosen a “Back to the Future” theme, focusing on the gradual return to post-pandemic normalcy with the boating schedule. (DeLorean cars with flux capacitors, not required.) While many previous series events raised funds for battling leukemia, this year the 18th annual event will kick off on June 11 with the APDA Parkinson’s Race, to increase awareness and raise funds for the American Parkinson Disease Association, which supports the more than 1 million people and their families who are battling Parkinson’s Disease. Since 1961, APDA has raised over $226 million for patient services, awareness campaigns, and research grants to fight this chronic neurological disorder. The Parkinson’s Race runs from noon to 6 p.m., with boats of all sizes racing (or just cruising) past the Seattle skyline and looping back to the marina. The event is immediately followed by a post-regatta party and networking event at the marina, featuring great food, drinks, and live music. The party will also include an PHOTO BYraffle SCOTT EKLUND/REDBOX PICTURES auction and prizes with 100% of the proceeds going to APDA. After the June 11 race, the festivities continue each Thursday night with informal races and post-race events hosted by an array of sponsors: Elliott Bay Yacht Sales (June 16); Monkeyfist Marine (June 23); CSR Marine (June 30); Fisheries Supply (July 7); Sea Hawk Paints (July 14); Splash N’ Detail (July 21); Seattle Dive (July 28); and Palisade Restaurant (August 4). Then, on August 11, Northwest Yachting magazine will close out the series event by sponsoring The Rutten Race, which honors Tom Rutten, who was an avid sailor, founder of the Downtown Sailing Series, and a member of the NWY family. Rules of the races, schedules, and registration information can be found at: downtownsailingseries.com.

Boats Made by Kids, for Kids, Added to CWB Sailing Program As the summer boating season kicks off, local kids are now helping others to learn how to sail. This month, the Center for Wooden Boats (CWB) in South Lake Union will start its Summer Sailing camps using new boats that were built specifically for young sailors, by young sailors. The three new boats, known as Lake Union Swifts, were built by a group of teenage students as part of a maritime internship program that began in 2019, with local high schools including Gibson Ek in Issaquah and the Big Picture School in Bellevue. The course is available to kids as young as 8-years-old, but the majority of students tend to be pre-teen on up to high-school age, said CWB’s head boatwright Dustin Epsey. Construction of the Swifts, made from a modified kit by Maryland-based Chesapeake Light Craft, was done for the first time in the CWB’s boatshop and supervised by Epsey. A fourth Swift kit has also been purchased for future use in CWB courses, he said.
The Lake Union Swifts are variants of Chesapeake’s popular Tenderly Dinghy kit boats. Some of the modifications used in the Swifts include a jib and bowsprit in the sloop configuration. “They’re light, beautiful 11-foot boats with a pivoting centerboard,” Epsey said. “They also have built-in bench seating,” which aids in flotation and a quick recovery in case of capsizes, he added. The three new watercraft, which have yet to be named, will be used this summer to teach courses, in collaboration with the Pacific Science Center, such as The Science of Sailing, which focuses on the physics of navigation. The hands-on course will investigate such topics as the cause and effect between wind in sails and control at the helm. Youth sailing programs will run through August and are already nearly booked for the summer, but some spots may still be open. For more information about registering and to learn more about the new Lake Union swift vessels, visit: cwb.org. 23

Volvo Penta Offers Retrofits of Assisted Docking on Older Boats
26
Volvo Penta’s IPS propulsion system has made the chore of docking much simpler for boaters by using a combination of automated actions and improved manual controls on vessels made in the last few years. Now, the company has adapted the tech to make retrofits of the assisted docking system for boats made within the last 10 years. The system, which the company said anticipates and automates a skipper’s actions during docking procedures, takes into account other factors such as windspeed and current to ensure the proper course is kept. Performance of the assisted docking system can also improve over time with repeated use and software upgrades, the company said. Retrofits to add assisted docking capabilities can now be made in the aftermarket for D6-IPS, D8-IPS and D11-IPS packages in vessels made as early as 2012 for EVCE and EVC2. The retrofitting to be performed will be “boat specific,” Volvo Penta said, from a minor software update to extensive upgrade that may also include the addition of a joystick, a dynamic positioning system antenna, and/or a glass cockpit interface. To find out more information on the retrofits or to find out if your vessel is eligible, contact the local experts at Coastal Marine in Seattle via: coastalmarineengine.com.

[ ELECTRIC BOATING ]
E-Boat Market Charges Forward with Aqua SuperPower, X Shore, Evoy Alliances
PHOTOS COURTESY OF AQUA SUPERPOWER
28
Coming soon to a marina near you? The electric boating wave is growing and may break further into the North American market with the recent European alliance formed between an e-charging station maker, an e-boat manufacturer, and an electric engine firm—all of which are expanding their reach into the United States and Canada. Aqua SuperPower, a charging network company based in the U.K., has inked an agreement with Swedish e-boat builder X Shore and Norwegian electric engine maker Evoy to promote their products throughout the North America. The agreement represents three key elements needed to expand electric vehicle (EV) boating on this side of the Atlantic: new boat designs, more efficient electric motors, and a reliable power network to keep the systems charged. Aqua SuperPower, which calls itself the first marine-specific electric charging network, has released a 150 kW station designed for EV use in marinas around the world. Built to IP65 standards and constructed using Hydro CIRCAL recycled aluminum, each station provides AC and DC outlets to allow
powerboats to rapidly recharge while out, about, and on the go, much like the e-charging stations spotted at retailers, gas stations, and other outlets for electric cars. Currently, the company has about 150 charging stations set up on the Côte d’Azur and other European locations, as well as just launched units in Canada. To help promote this expansion, Aqua, X Shore, and Evoy are working together this year at boat shows across Canada and the U.S. to educate boaters about EV technology and their collective efforts to reduce the carbon footprint in the marine industry. Highlighted in April 2021 issue of Northwest Yachting, X Shore made waves last year with the release of its Eelex 8000 all-electric tender. Evoy, as well, turned heads last year in North America with its all-electric, 120-400 hp outboard motors, which achieved top speeds of more than 60 knots in test trials. For more details on the developing tech, and on AquaSuperPower, go to: aqua-superpower.com.

[ SAVING THE SHELL HOUSE ]
ASUW Receives $7 Million from Microsoft, NanoString for Shell House Restoration Project The long-running project to restore the century-old Shell House at the University of Washington has been given a huge boost with a recent donation of $7 million. The source of the funds came from two personal donations from Brad Smith, president of Microsoft, and Kathy Surace-Smith, vice president of NanoString Technologies. Their combined pledges totaled $5 million for the restoration effort. Microsoft Philanthropies also dedicated an additional $2 million, which will be put in use to meet the expected $18.5 million cost to fully restore the Shell House. As covered in NWY’s August 2021 feature on the campaign, the 12,000square-foot Shell House was originally built on the Montlake Cut in 1918, near the end of World War I, as a seaplane hangar for the U.S. Navy. After the war ended, the structure was quickly converted into the home of UW’s rowing team, where it stayed for several decades. In 2018, the structure was awarded historical landmark status. The storied structure was where famed boat designer and builder George Pocock crafted the legendary Husky Clipper racing shell, which earned the eight-rower crew a gold in 1936, and again in the 1948 and 1952 games. Wooden racing hulls designed by Pocock eventually won a total of 21 Olympic gold medals from 1920 to 1964. The story of Pocock and the Olympic team’s heroic, underdog performance in Nazi-era Berlin was told in Daniel James Brown’s 2013 book, The Boys in the Boat, which will soon be released as a feature film, directed by George Clooney. The newly donated renovation funds will be used towards The Next 100 Years campaign to create a learning and gathering space for UW students and the broader community. Work to be done with funds will involve restoration of the loft from which Pocock made his award-winning designs, as well as the giant sliding wooden doors at the entrance to the structure. Plans also include the creation of museum quality displays of famous boats, classroom spaces, a café, a gift shop, and historical presentations about the building’s rowing, military, and aviation history. To contribute to the campaign, or for the latest updates on the Shell House, go to: asuwshellhouse.uw.edu.

Tickled Pink Sip, savor, sail, celebrate aboard the Pink Bateau , a new curated cruising experience from Seattle-based entertaining and design expert Kelley Moore.
Given that it’s traditionally broken over a bow for christening, Champagne has long been a celebratory companion to boating. So, it’s only fitting that the French classic is now part of the inspiration behind a brand-new vessel venture: the Pink Bateau. Moored on Lake Union in Seattle and wrapped in a charming cotton candy pink hue, the 43-foot-long 1970 Gran Mariner plays host to birthdays, anniversaries, showers, proposals, micro-weddings, and other life events with custom parties planned by local entertaining and design expert, Kelley Moore. “I’ve always had a deep desire to connect people and create moments that are unforgettable,” says Moore, who has appeared on shows like Today and The View, and recently debuted a new show on Discovery+, High Design. “One day I was floating in my dinghy, with a bottle of Champagne, looking at the boat thinking about the re-design—and that’s when I had the idea to bring the tablescapes that I’ve created on TV and in magazines to life and share them with other people by creating curated experiences on the water.” 32
Packages include everything from a dessert cruise featuring sweet treats from Trophy Cupcakes paired with XOBC Rosé sparkling wine, or you can choose the charcuterie and fromage grazing table for a more savory option, all the way up to a luxurious, four-course seated dinner experience complete with cocktails made with Fast Penny Spirits liquor. Each event includes a design consultation with Moore, who works with licensed caterers and chefs to craft a personalized menu, and you can sit back and relax as every detail is handled by the professional crew (who all sport pink berets, of course). Pops of stylish pink abound aboard, from the hand-painted geometric motif on the walls of the main salon and galley to the magenta pink faucet found in what is quite possibly the cutest head out on the lake. 2023 Azimut 60 Flybridge Elegance, space, agility: the brand new, Italian designed Azimut 60 Flybridge available from Alexander Marine offers it all this summer. Set to arrive at Alexander Marine in Seattle this summer, the recently unveiled Azimut Yachts’ 2023 60-foot Flybridge model features wide-open spaces on the main deck and well-appointed social areas for entertaining. Designed by Italian legends Stefano Righini for the overall concept and Achille Salvagni Architetti for the interiors, the newest model makes good use of its carbon-fiber construction to provide large, dynamically stable surfaces without adding extra weight. The namesake flybridge itself, which comes with an optional carbon-fiber hard top, is accessed via teak ladder and has anti-slip treatment on the upper deck. Aft of the flybridge helm, a C-shaped sofa seats six people and surrounds a teak table that opposes an L-shaped cabinet and refrigerator to starboard. In the wheelhouse, navigation equipment includes the Raymarine’s Bronze Package, with engine displays, thruster controls, rudder, a chain meter counter, and VHF. The Optimus Electronic Power Steering system by Seastar provides the sensation of driving a sports car, with customized levels of helm responsiveness depending on speed. Speaking of speed, the twin Volvo D13 diesel engines top out at 31 knots, and cruise at 26 knots, tapping all 1,800 horses.
On the main deck, the Azimut 60 does not skimp on the modern luxury amenities: the carpeted salon includes a comfortable sofa to sit six people to port and a two-seater to starboard, along with space for a stereo system and high-definition TV. Forward of the salon, the galley features a ceramic glass four-hob range, a combination refrigerator/freezer, a microwave oven and grill, and a built-in wooden cutting board. A dinette opposite the galley includes a table with sofas on opposite sides to seat four people. More seating areas can be found on the bow deck and aft cockpit with plenty of room for lounging and entertaining. Below decks, the accommodations are carpeted and have Venetian blinds that can bring both light and sleep-inducing darkness into the cabins. An owner’s cabin located amidship boasts a double bed, an en suite head with synthetic teak flooring, and a separate column shower. The VIP cabin in the bow section also has a double bed and panoramic views though its large windows, while another guest cabin has fixed single beds and access to a day head and shower.

2022 Blackfin 272CC Cut through the chop with finesse in the stylish and sporty Blackfin 272 Center Console available for fishing fun from Irwin Yacht Sales. It’s been called a “battlewagon on the water,” but ruggedness is only part of the charm of the stylish new Blackfin 272CC. Recently seen in a stunning light gray colorway at the Seattle Boats Afloat show in late April, the new Blackfin debuted for Irwin Yachts as one of the best-riding center console boats in its class, powered by twin Mercury 300-horsepower Verado outboards. While fishing trips are the typical use for the 272CC, there are enough touches of elegance to make the boat suitable for day cruising. The boat provides plenty of seating, with bow and cockpit coaming bolsters, removable forward-facing bow backrests, a foldaway transom bench seat, helm seats, and a forward-facing console seat with flip-up armrests. The U-shaped bow seating area includes comfortable cushions for guests atop ample storage compartments. A Fusion Apollo Series sound system comes standard, along with satellite-ready AM/FM Bluetooth. For added bling at parties, Blackfin’s premium stereo upgrade package feature six JL speakers, two subwoofers, a five-channel amplifier, and LED speaker lights. Standard amenities include a pressurized transom shower and a head with a pull-out sprayer. Optional packages include a cockpit table with Sea Dek inlay, a bow filler casting platform, electric reels hookups, and six hardtop rod holders. INDUSTRY EVERETT-BASED OCEANGATE INC. IS CHARTING THE COURSE FOR MODERN DAY OCEANIC EXPLORATION AS ITS PIONEERING SUBMERSIBLE, TITAN, DESCENDS INTO THE DEPTHS THIS MONTH ON ITS SOPHOMORE EXPEDITION TO CHRONICLE THE WRECKAGE OF RMS TITANIC.

THE 22-FOOT-LONG, 10,000 POUND TITAN WAS DESIGNED AND DEVELOPED HERE IN THE NORTHWEST.
50
When Stockton Rush, CEO and founder of Everett-based OceanGate Inc., first discovered deep sea scuba diving almost 20 years ago, he was immediately taken by the amazing topography, astounding creatures, and awe-inspiring wreckage found hiding under the ocean surface. You could say that Rush was already born with a spirit for adventure— he once aspired to be an astronaut and at age 19 was considered the youngest jet transport rated pilot in the world—but it only took a few dives for the mysteries of the briny deep to pivot his attention from the skies to the seas.
51
“The wreck itself is so colorful. The metal rusticles are a vivid red, and there are the greens and blues that have come from the copper and brass elements on the ship. It’s a palette of beautiful colors—it’s like looking at abstract art.” -Stockton Rush, CEO and Founder of OceanGate Inc. and Titanic Expedition Leader
“I had thought space was my calling, but what I realized was that I really wanted to be an explorer, to discover new things, find new life forms, to see things another human being hasn’t ever seen before,” he says. “And the oceans really are the last uncharted frontier. There is still so much to be discovered.” But, as much as Rush loved diving, he was less enthused by the cumbersome gear that came with it, not to mention the challenging conditions posed by the cold Pacific Northwest waters and the isolation he felt underwater from other divers. He went looking for a small submarine or submersible he could rent out for his dives instead, but quickly hit a dead end. This prompted him to purchase an unfinished hull from California and retrofit it to his needs. That prototype took its first dive in Desolation Sound, and soon, Rush began to see a vision for the future: “Diving in a sub is so different, there is a team aspect to it; that’s when I start thinking of how to get more people underwater to experience the ocean for themselves.” OceanGate Inc. was thus founded in 2009, with Rush working over the years to create a business platform and the compatible submersibles and support systems that would open up oceanic exploration not only to 52
more researchers and scientists, but also to passionate individuals from all walks of life. Fast-forward to 2021 when Rush did just that. Last summer, OceanGate Inc. along with its sister organizations—OceanGate Expeditions and nonprofit arm OceanGate Foundation— made headlines around the world after releasing images from their expedition to the wreck site of none other than RMS Titanic, the first in a multi-year longitudinal study. “The wreck itself is so colorful. The metal rusticles are a vivid red, and there are the greens and blues that have come from the copper and brass elements on the ship,” recalls Rush of his first impression at viewing the sight. “It’s a palette of beautiful colors—it’s like looking at abstract art.” Brought to life in stunning 4K resolution, the captivating imagery was all taken from aboard Titan, the primary research vessel for the 2021 Expedition and the world’s only five-person manned submersible capable of reaching a depth of 4,000 meters. (This benchmark means that Titan could reach to the depths of almost 90 percent of the world’s oceans; as the Titanic rests at 3,800 meters it is

believed Titan is the only manned submersible that can currently dive to this depth.) In addition to having the largest viewport of any deep diving submersible, Titan’s exterior cameras and lighting provide a vivid live view of the outside environment, perhaps an everyday concept on land, but an innovative one in a 22-foot-long submersible sleuthing out the seas. She’s also agile and nimble. Submarines are often fabricated from titanium, which is strong but also heavy. Instead, Titan’s pressure vessel is crafted from a lighter aerospace-grade carbon fiber that has her weighing in at just over 10,000 pounds. Thus, Titan is light enough to be transported via a standard tractor trailer, and can be launched from a variety of vessels. Rush says in a pinch, he has even launched the submersible from a kayak equipped with a scuba tank. “Her versatility means that we can match our support ships to the needs of the specific mission and not be curtailed by the needs of the sub,” he explains, an important note considering that OceanGate’s plans for exploration reach much further than Titanic. Current upcoming expeditions include one to survey the depths of the massive underwater Hudson Canyon off the coast of New York and another to observe flora, fauna, and marine life in the Great Bahama Bank. After the successful completion of the 2021 Titanic Expedition, Titan was trucked back across the country back to the Puget Sound—an example of how even if
it has made a name for itself lately in the Northeastern Atlantic, the company is still very much anchored in the Pacific Northwest. All of OceanGate Inc.’s submersibles—there are currently four including Titan—are developed out of the company’s homebase at the Port of Everett, with testing and research dives often taking place in nearby Possession Sound. Local partnerships abound: OceanGate collaborated with NASA on some of the technical aspects of Titan, but they also leaned on the experts at Boeing and the University of Washington Applied Physics Lab during fabrication. Toray in Tacoma produced the carbon fiber composite material for the submersible, Janicki Industries out of Sedro-Wooley did all the machining work, and then the UW stepped up again to help OceanGate test the pressure vessel at their School of Oceanography. “It’s really unique to have all these companies and resources available to us here locally,” says Rush. “It’s been a great community to work with.” Over the winter and early spring months, the OceanGate crew has been busy prepping Titan for the sophomore Expedition that kicks off June 15th. Taking lessons from the inaugural exploration—Rush only semi-jokingly says he learned to pack warmer clothes this time—Titan has received a bevy of upgrades, including a number of improvements to the electrical and weight deployment systems. Her cameras 55
also have been upgraded to now capture imagery in 8K resolution. The submersible will also play a vital role in a new research initiative unique to this year’s missions: the collection of environmental DNA. As of April 12 of this year, RMS Titanic has sat on the ocean floor for 110 years and in that time the wreckage has become home to a vast variety of marine life, creating an artificial reef-like sanctuary for these cold water organisms. “The creatures down there are frankly some of the weirdest, craziest, and coolest things I’ve ever seen,” says Rush when describing in great detail a ghostly white, crustacean-like life form he observed last year. OceanGate’s Lisa Dreher adds it is quite possible that there are additional species lurking nearby that haven’t even been observed yet, but have left DNA behind. Led by researcher Dr. Steve W. Ross, the marine biology team will deploy Niskin bottles in the water column at various prescribed depths during descension over the course of several missions. Attached to a cable, these plastic cylindrical tubes are equipped with stoppers on each end held open by plastic cords attached to a release mechanism. When a small weight is released down the cable line, it strikes the release mechanism, stopping up the bottle, and trapping water inside non-invasively. Also relying on the high-resolution imagery and footage captured to provide additional context to the study, the team will then use the collected genetic information to develop a catalog of marine life. Coming about to Rush’s original objective all those years ago, the team that will make the 2022 Expedition consists of the aforementioned researchers, marine biologists, archaeologists, historians, and perhaps most uniquely—trained citizen explorers. Unlike the current wave of space tourism, these Mission Specialists are not just along for the ride, but are active participants in both subsea and topside support roles. This can include everything from dive planning and 56
working side-by-side with researchers to capturing video footage, sonar, laser scans, and 3D imagery to running communications and assisting with dive preparations and more—a full “submersive” experience, if you will, into the world of exploration. One such Mission Specialist is Gary Philbrick, a Seattle native and current Sun Valley, Idaho, resident who is stepping back on board after serving with the 2021 Expedition team. “I’ve always had a lifelong desire and passion to find out what’s in the ocean, even as a kid in Seattle playing and diving around in the Sound,” says Philbrick. “And it’s absolutely riveting, to say watch a rattail fish in the water column as you descend down at 12,000 feet.” An avid traveler, diver, and outdoor enthusiast, Philbrick primarily helmed the inflatable that helped launch the specialists going down in 2021, and states his biggest takeaway was not the behemoth lying on the ocean floor, but rather the camaraderie built among the team. “Seeing Titanic was icing on the cake, but I’d say 90 percent of what really made the experience for me were the interactions and conversations on the ship,” he explains. “Getting to experience first-hand the knowledge and wisdom of the specialists, some of whom even helped bring artifacts up from the wreckage, to learn their insights about the ocean over a cup of coffee, that was far and away the best part.” “It’s really a chance to get your hands dirty, be a kid, find out what it is to be an explorer,” echoes Rush. “People come on board with different perspectives, skills, aspirations, and imaginations, and then you layer in the experts from the field, and it creates this dynamic team—and sets up an amazing environment to embark on an expedition.” >> To learn more about the 2022 Titanic Expedition taking place now, plus details on other upcoming expeditions, visit: oceangateexpeditions.com.

It’s been well over a year since anyone’s hoisted the mainsail on the iconic 90-foot-long Tacoma mainstay and Sea Scout Ship 190 (SSS 190) training vessel, Odyssey. That’s due

to the fact that in March of 2021 routine maintenance led to the discovery of soft wood near the mainmast-deck intersection, which prompted its removal. When further sections of soft wood were uncovered and workers found that a glue failure resulted in delamination, all parties concluded that replacement of the 105-foot Sitka spruce mast was unavoidable. Holding fast on the precipice of an illustrious 84-year history that started far from the Northwest in the Nevins Shipyard in New York, it’s now all hands on deck as Odyssey waits to sail again.
The Navy Years, 1942-1974 Commandeered by the US Navy in 1942 and leaving her life of luxury behind, the newly renamed USS Saluda IX87 was painted grey,
Origin Story, 1938 Originally built for Barbara Whitney, high society daughter of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney and Harry Payne Whitney, Odyssey’s story begins all the way back in 1938. The aforementioned Barbara married Barklie McKee Henry in 1924 and later did what any avid sailing wife would do—she bought her husband a sailboat for his birthday. The new yacht was delivered in the fall of 1938 and her journey set sail. From grand trips to Belize and onward through the Panama Canal, crossing the equator and on to the Galapagos Islands, to sailing and entertaining in the waters off Connecticut and
overhauled to diesel, and modified at the U.S. Navy’s Port Everglades base in Florida. There were three main reasons the navy would want a luxury yacht. First, the plush boat boasted a refrigerator and freezer. “This meant it could carry food for a much longer time than most sailboats,” explains naval architect Bud Bronson, who is also an Odyssey Committee & Organizational Representative and Foss Waterway Seaport Board Member. “It also had two other features that were extremely rare back then,” continues Bronson. “It had a radio, but it was a voice radio with a radio direction finder, so it could hone in on a signal and tell where the signal was coming from.” Officially attached to the Bureau of Ordnance in 1943, USS Saluda made its way to the Navy’s Underwater Sound Laboratory at Fort Trumbull in New London, Connecticut. Here, the vessel was engaged in patrolling, testing, and research for the development of early systems used in underwater warfare. By the time the war ended in 1945, the Henry family would decline the return of their wooden yawl due to weathering sustained 61

during its service, and the ship would remain with the Navy. Briefly sent to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts, Saluda worked in the field of hydrography, a science involving the surveying and measuring of features in and around bodies of water. By 1947, Saluda would undergo preparations to weigh anchor for the West Coast. For almost thirty years, the ship served the Navy Electronics Lab in San Diego. Participating in underwater sound recording and naval programs involving dolphin training added to Odyssey’s growing resume. “At one time they had a tank midship, where the two dinghies are now stored, and would carry a couple of dolphins out,” says Bronson. “They put sound gear on the dolphins and they would flip them over the side, monitor them, and then the dolphins would return.” During this time Saluda was often used for leisure, entertaining, and even racing. In 1950, she even went far as to win the Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race, led by Captain George H. Hanson. Eventually, the Navy would move on to bigger and fancier equipped boats, while Saluda sailed its way up the coast to Washington. The Whidbey Island Naval Station would be the final destination in what turned out to be a lengthy naval career. It was 1974, and the remaining four years of service were spent mostly as a recreational boat for Navy personnel and the host for many parties. Finally in 1978, in major disrepair and short of funds, the ship parted ways with the Navy.
62
Odyssey Today, 1974-Through Present Day Finding someone to take on a wooden sailboat that needed extensive work was no easy task, until it was offered to an individual in Tacoma with ties to the Pacific Harbors Council (formerly known as the Mt. Rainier Council). After countless hours of manpower and funding initiatives to pay for it all, Odyssey was revitalized and relocated to its new home on the Foss Waterway in Tacoma, the ship’s home today. Today, the boat operates as a Subchapter T vessel according to the regulations of the U.S. Coast Guard. Under the watchful eye of licensed captains at all times, the co-ed Sea Scouts program for ages 14-20 teaches leadership, responsibility, and life skills through tall ship sailing and is an initiative of the Boy Scouts of America. Many youths from across the region, like current ship bosun Anna J., have participated over the years. These experiences have sometimes led students to careers in the maritime industry, but have always provided lifetime worth of memories. “Sailing on the Sound allows you to experience it in a different way, rather than just observing it,” says Anna, who has been a crew member for five years. “Working on Odyssey has fueled my love of history and respect for sailors of the past. It’s brought me out of my comfort zone, allowing me to gain self-confidence and really mature as a leader.” The same is true of adult volunteers like Odyssey Committee Chair and licensed Captain Dr. Eric Kiesel, who joined the program in 2007. “I was a Scout, and I believe in the Scout ideals. It’s a good basis to lead your life on,” says Kiesel. “I really love sailing,
and teaching. I want to give the youth a skill set they’ll have the rest of their lives, and one they can enjoy. It also keeps you young.” The SSS 190 crew is steadfast, showing up every weekend to keep Odyssey in shipshape despite the loss of the mainmast. (Passing its most recent Coast Guard inspection means the vessel is certified to operate by motor without sails.) The Sea Scouts routinely practice man-overboard drills, helmsmanship, navigation, and raising the mizzenmast onboard. The Scouts also participate in small sailboat training, kayaking, skill tests, and other projects. Saving Odyssey and the SSS 190 Legacy In the past Odyssey relied on weekend and day sail charters to fund the youth program and the vessel. Trained crew took guests on sailing excursions to places like the San Juan Islands or Victoria, British Columbia. But now, between the lack of a mainmast and the pandemic, it became clear that grave challenges lay ahead. As talks with professional shipwrights with the know-how to restore historic wooden vessels and masts continued, the exorbitant cost of such endeavors hit home. In December of 2021, a passionate group of individuals got together to start a nonprofit called Friends of Odyssey. Their mission is to gain financial support for the aging vessel, and keep the well-loved SSS 190 program afloat. Founding member, Board President, and former Odyssey Skipper Shana Curd has seen first-hand the positive impacts the program has on young adults, making supporting it all the more vital.
“Boys and girls alike come onboard knowing nothing and learn together as a crew—learning to trust one another,” says Curd. “They’re given adult responsibilities in a supervised environment, a place where they can take risks, be supported, and learn at the same time. It’s amazing to watch their transformation.” From early days in the epoch of East Coast society to honorable service as USS Saluda during WWII and over three-decades of naval duty to present-day sail training vessel for Sea Scout Ship 190, Odyssey has a long, storied history—and a legacy that her friends are now fighting to preserve for future generations. >> Help Odyssey sail once again. Funding initiatives are underway for mast replacement, vessel restoration, and sustainability projects, plus any donations made help the organization continue to offer unique youth experiences through the SSS 190 tall ship sailing program. E XPE RT TAKE BY DIEGO GOMEZ / PHOTOS COURTESY OF WORTH AVENUE YACHTS
Easy Sell Sold! Yacht broker Diego Gomez of WORTH AVENUE YACHTS shares tried-and-true tips for listing your boat with ease, efficiency, and expertise.
Is there a time of year or a particular season, that you find is best to list a vessel for resale? Seasonality plays a factor in some markets more than others. While most Pacific Northwest boaters spend their time boating late spring through early fall, buyers for your boat may be located in Southern California, or even potentially the East Coast. Spring is a great time to go to market, but buyers are also hunting in the summer and fall to give themselves time to do maintenance or upgrades in the offseason, however, the period between Thanksgiving and the New Year is typically the slowest time. Since 2020, we’ve seen a strong seller’s market, with incredibly tight inventory supply for both new and used boats, coupled with increased demand, it’s taken most of the seasonality out of the market nationally. It’s important to consider both the actual cost and opportunity cost of holding onto or selling a boat. Remembering that, like the housing market or stock market, it’s impossible to time the peaks; it’s best to sell a boat when you’re ready to sell and when the boat is properly prepared to go to market. Are there any upgrades or maintenance items you recommend sellers consider making before putting a vessel on the market? As a seller, you have three main objectives in selling your boat: One, sell the boat for as much money as possible. Two, sell the boat as quickly as possible. And three, avoid any surprises that could derail the deal during survey inspections. You only get one chance to make a first impression. You can have all of the beautiful marketing collateral, but when a buyer steps on your boat for the first time, if there’s an odor, clutter, lightbulbs out, or flaking paint or chalky gelcoat, they immediately start to think; “If 66
the seller didn’t address these items, they probably didn’t take care of the more important systems.” It’s hard to change someone’s first impression. Buyers are already competing for inventory and paying more for boats these days. They’re also faced with long lead times for parts and service after they purchase. If you can think of ways to make their life easier, they’ll make yours easier in return. Doing an engine service and bottom job before going on the market allows the buyer immediate use of the boat, resulting in a higher price and a more willing buyer through the deal. A boat that shows well will help encourage higher offers and spend less time on the market, but avoiding surprises during survey is what will ensure the deal will close without having to renegotiate or fall out of contract and go back on the market. In this market, I suggest getting a pre-listing survey done. Especially on later model boats, many buyers are willing to potentially forego their own survey, which will greatly reduce the contingencies and closing timelines, and even if they do have their own survey performed, there should not be any need to re-negotiate. Let’s talk visuals: In your experience, just how important is it to get a boat photographed professionally? When do you also recommend videography or other multimedia assets? It is absolutely necessary, and not all professionals are equal. While smartphones these days can take great photos, the angles, lighting, framing, and color grading that a professional photographer can bring will make an incredible difference. In yacht sales, the photos, videos, and virtual tours are what we as brokers use to both attract and educate our buyers. It’s a delicate balance to display attractive photos without making the boat look better than it is. I never want a client to board a listing and be disappointed
with the boat in person compared with the photos. A great photographer will be able to accurately capture the feeling of a boat. Video and virtual tours have been a game changer for yacht sales. Those of us who have embraced not only the technology, but the opportunity to engage with clients through video have seen an incredible return on the investment. I find clients appreciate a deeper dive into the boats they are considering, and over time, clients that follow my videos build a level of trust in me and enjoy seeing a wide variety of yachts through my eyes. Virtual tours are very helpful as well, but require more client interaction. During the peak of the pandemic, we used this method extensively, and I think there’s a lot of room to grow in this category. The key is to give the buyer the opportunity to explore as much as they desire, and when they’re ready, they’ll reach out. This results in more educated buyers, more qualified showings on my listings, and faster sales. The old method of trying to get clients to call for more information is not the way people shop any longer. Describe the broker and seller relationship. What do you like best about working with brokerage clients? Having a strategy, adapting the strategy to market fluctuations, communicating proactively, and always doing the right thing are what I think my clients appreciate most about working with me. I help my clients buy, build, sell, and operate their boats with confidence. Communication is key. I enjoy working with brokerage clients as I can work with them to buy the right boat for them rather than selling them a brand product I represent. I love that each boat is unique, learning about each boat, and interpreting it through my experience. Sharing that with clients is very rewarding. I enjoy
that most of my client relationships go beyond boating and we’ve become friends over the years. About the Expert: While there are many advantages to listing your boat with a broker, not all brokers or brokerage houses are equal. It’s important that you build a trusting relationship with your broker, that he or she understands your boat inside and out, and that you feel confident in their strategy to market and sell your boat. At Worth Avenue Yachts, we specialize in motoryachts, but our brokers each bring a wide array of experience, from sailboats to tenders and all the way up to superyachts. Our team spans from Seattle to Florida to Rhode Island and Monaco, and we have a vast array of market intelligence and industry relationships that give our clients an advantage in the marketplace. Personally, I enjoy working with clients who are owner-operators for vessels in the 40-80’ range, particularly Downeast style yachts and raised pilot house motoryachts. >> For more information on selling your yacht with Worth Avenue Yachts, visit: worthavenueyachts.com. Summer of Salmon
Stock the tackle box, untangle your lines, and gas up the boat. MARK YUASA previews a busy month of June salmon fishing.
Even if the first official day of summer doesn’t occur until June 21, salmon anglers can still get a head start on spots to catch summer salmon in several marine areas of Puget Sound: CHINOOK One of the highlights is south-central Puget Sound (Marine Area 11 that runs from Vashon Island’s northern tip south to the Tacoma-Narrows Bridge) where hatchery-marked Chinook fishing opens June 1 and runs through September 30 or sooner if the catch quota is achieved. This June 1 opening is more than two weeks earlier than 2021, and prior to that, fishing had been closed during this timeframe since 2018. Most of these early summer migrating Chinook are headed for southern Puget Sound hatcheries, so chart a course in that direction. Look for salmon at the Clay Banks to Owen Beach off the northwest side of Point Defiance Park; the “slag pile” off the Tacoma Yacht Club; the “flats” outside of Gig Harbor; Girl Scout Camp in Colvos Passage; the ledges outside of Quartermaster Harbor; and Point Dalco on southwest side of Vashon Island. Southern Puget Sound—Area 13 south of the Narrows Bridge—is open year-round. Look for early-summer hatchery Chinook lurking at Point Fosdick and off Fox Island’s east side at Gibson Point, Toy Point and Fox Point. This area blossoms in mid- to late-August as migrating summer and fall Chinook arrive in the Nisqually Delta Reach area, Anderson Island, and Johnson Point near Olympia. A fun additional note: The Tulalip Bay Bubble Fishery, just to the north of Everett, is already open for king salmon, also known as Chinook. Fishing is allowed each week from 12:01 a.m. Fridays through 11:59 a.m. Mondays only through September 7, and then weekends only from September 1126. (In recent years, the Tulalip Bubble Fishery has also been fair to good for early-summer Chinook in the 10- to 20-pound range.) The most effective fishing technique for Chinook is jigging, and the type of jig is usually a judgement call by the angler with one rarely outperforming the other. The Chinook bite is more reactive of whatever flashes in front of their face, so many prefer jigs like a P-Line Laser Minnow, Point Wilson Dart, Buzz Bomb, Dungeness Stinger, and Crippled Herring. Color is by preference although favorites are the glow, chartreuse, pearl-white, green-nickel, blue-pearl or blue-gold patterns. Store-bought jigs come with a treble hook, and take note: they’re illegal for salmon in Marine Areas 1 to 13. Only single-pointed barbless hooks and one line with up to two hooks may be used. Other anglers like to troll with plugs, spoons, and a plastic hoochie squid. Keep in mind that summer Chinook are on a constant migration pattern and during early morning hours they can be found suspended in the upper 70
and middle water columns. As the sun breaks over the horizon, some fish tend to move into deeper water and often hang near the bottom. Other factors to success include locating baitfish schools at the proper depth and the tidal influence in a certain location. For example, on the early June 1 opener in Marine 11 the morning high tide is soft and occurs at 5:58 a.m. that date, so you’ll likely find a hot, but not so appealing, dogfish bite. Oddly enough, these pesky fish school and feed heavily on the softer tides. The best action for salmon should happen leading up to and right and shortly after the low tide change at 1:07 p.m. COHO Another popular early-summer fishery is the central Puget Sound—Marine Area 10—that opens June 16 through July 13 for resident coho. The past several years have been very productive for this fishery. The coho aren’t big, averaging 2 to 4 pounds, but are very snappy, fun to catch and are excellent table fare as their main diet are the abundant schools of krill (a microscopic, shrimp-like crustacean) that turn the coho flesh a bright red-orange hue. Top places are the shipping lanes between Jefferson Head and KingstonApple Tree Point area. Don’t overlook the rip currents off Richmond Beach; West Point south of Shilshole Bay; and Bainbridge Island from Point Monroe south to Restoration Point. Trolling is the best way to catch coho using a downrigger set at depths of 30 to 80 feet with a trolling speed of 2.5 to 3.5 mph. For gear, attach a Gibbs Delta flasher (purple haze or moon jelly/green glow) on a 30-inch leader to a Silver Horde Gold Star white UV hoochie or an Ace Hi Fly Needlefish UV glow or purple haze hoochie and a small herring strip on the bottom hook. Others prefer to simply drift or motor mooch using a whole or cut-plug herring (dogfish can be an issue here, too). Stick with a small red-label herring attached to a 30-inch tandem hook leader with a 3-to-6-ounce banana lead weight sinker. In the next issue of the magazine, I’ll dive into July salmon fishing options as the list of opportunities continues to expand all summer long, and in the meantime, a full list of statewide marine and freshwater salmon fisheries can be found on the WDFW website at wdfw.wa.gov. I’ll see you on the water very soon! Mark Yuasa is a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Communications Consultant, and longtime fishing and outdoor writer. Born and raised in Seattle and a UW alum, Mark spent 33 years at the Seattle Times. He volunteers with the BSA Chief Seattle Council and National Order of the Arrow organizations, and enjoys fishing for salmon and other fish species in local waterways.

RAC ING SHE ET BY DOUG HANSEN
Adventuring in Antigua DOUG HANSEN and team have taken the show on the road to race in a Caribbean classic, Antigua Sailing Week. Sailing is at its core an activity that stems from the very heart of the human drive to learn and explore. Sailing has been the mechanism for travel and human exploration for tens of thousands of years, and we sailors are continuing a tradition of pushing boundaries that stretches back before history can record. Whether you are completely new to the sport or have been on the water for your entire life, you are always learning and growing. With sailing’s lifelong progression and its widespread reach, there is a unique shared experience between sailors from around the world that gives us an avenue to connect and compete with one another without even the need from a common language. The truth is that we are somewhat isolated in our Pacific Northwest sailing community and a bit removed from the rest of the sailing world at large, thanks to the fact that we are in one of the far corners of the world as it’s drawn on a map. While this allows us to grow and develop a uniqueness of our own that is unmatched (think: the creation of R2AK, Van Isle 360, and all the wild boats being built in garages throughout the region), if ever presented with the opportunity to engage with another part of the sailing world at large, I jump at the chance. Over the years, Steve Travis and the racing team onboard his TP52 Smoke (previously Flash, and before that Flash Gordon II) have packed their bags numerous times and taken the show on the road to travel to regattas around the world. They have racked up successful results in Cork, Ireland; Cowes in the U.K.; Porto Cervo, Italy; Annapolis, Maryland; and in St. Barth. This is possible thanks to welcoming community of boat owners and charter brokers that allows our team to come in and take over a boat for the week. Then, we do our best to learn the ins and outs of the boat to become competitive. I began sailing with Steve Travis and his crew onboard his previous boat Flash at the age of fifteen and competed in the traditional Northwest keel boat races around the Salish Sea. It took nearly four years of racing before I finally got the invitation and traveled with the 76
team to my first international event in Cowes, and the experience changed my outlook on sailing forever. Now nearly two decades later, I continue to race with Steve. His latest adventure is taking us to the Caribbean island of Antigua, and this time, he has raised the bar once again by chartering a Volvo 70. A classic of the Caribbean season, Antigua Sailing Week takes place the first week of May each year and is the final event on the winter racing calendar for many teams. This true “bucket list” trip has been a long time coming as we originally intended to race in the 2020 event, but unfortunately, that and the 2021 regatta were canceled. After two years of uncertainty, canceling of flights, rebooking, moving rental houses, and even changing to a different Volvo 70, it appears to have all finally come together. Many of the core crew have been racing with one another on various boats around the world for decades and are familiar faces from the Seattle sailing scene. A family program to its core, nearly half of the sailing team are related to each other in one way or another, including fathers and daughters, fathers and sons, brothers and sisters, and husbands and wives—even my brother-in-law. This tight knit group has more miles and years sailing than anyone cares to count and is certain to be all in when it comes to pushing ourselves and the boat to get into the racing spirit and have fun doing it! One thing is for certain, that on this boat, in these conditions, no one will simply be along for the ride —it is going to take all of us to keep things moving forward throughout the week of racing. >> The adventure continues: Be sure to check back next month for a full, post regatta report and feature on the team as they explore a new place, work to learn a totally unique boat, and find out how it all comes together after two years of waiting and hoping.

SEA FARE BY JAMES O. FRAIOLI | PHOTO BY JESSICA NICOSIA NADLER
Beet the Heat JAMES O. FRAIOLI shakes up a classic with this summery, spicy Bloody Mary infused with beet and tomato juices. There are few things I find more irresistible or refreshing than pressing my lips to a seasoned rim and enjoying a chilled sip of farm-fresh juice perfectly blended with spices, sauces, and handcrafted liquor. I’m talking about the Bloody Mary—an iconic cocktail to be enjoyed, no matter what time of day. There’s also something about a Bloody Mary that conjures up nostalgic feelings of relaxation, exploration, and remediation, especially come summertime here in the Northwest when the sun is out and boaters like me are dropping anchor inside our favorite cove or marina. For the cocktail connoisseur, you know the Bloody Mary is one of those memorable drinks that is time-tested, yet so unique and special that many bartenders feel they’ve been given a blank canvas in which to be creative,
offering mariners and landlubbers alike a savory alcoholic beverage that can be specifically tailor-made to suite particular taste preferences. Here is one of those delicious riffs on the classic sipper; this one relies on fresh-pressed beet juice paired with spicy tomato and pepperoncini for an invigorating harmony of flavors and textures. Aptly named “Turn Up the Beet Bloody Mary,” the proportion of beet juice to tomato juice makes this cocktail excitingly light and not too earthy, and the bacon stick and salt rim, well, that’s simply divine. You can find this recipe and others in my book: The New Bloody Mary: More Than 75 Classics, Riffs & Contemporary Recipes for the Modern Bar, which I co-wrote with famed bartender Vincenzo Marianella.
Turn Up the Beet Bloody Mary
Beet Bloody Mary Mix
Rim: Lemon wedge, bacon salt, and smoked paprika 4 ounces chilled premium vodka, divided Beet Bloody Mary Mix, as needed, recipe follows Hot sauce, as needed, to taste Garnish: Pickled asparagus, kosher pickles, fresh rosemary sprig, celery, peppered bacon, small beets, pimento olives, pepperoncini
Makes about 2 cups
Run a fresh lemon wedge around the rims of two cocktail glasses. Roll the moistened rims in bacon salt and a bit of smoked paprika, then fill the glasses with ice. Set aside. In a cocktail shaker filled with minimal ice, add half of the vodka (2 ounces), and top off with half of the Beet Bloody Mary Mix. Add a dash or two, or more, of hot sauce, depending on your heat level. Shake and pour into the first prepared glass. Repeat the process for the second glass. Garnish and serve. 80
1½ cups spicy tomato juice ½ cup pure fresh-pressed beet juice 1 tablespoon pepperoncini juice (from jar) ½ lemon, juiced 1½ teaspoons fresh cracked black pepper ½ teaspoon grated fresh horseradish 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce ¼ teaspoon ground garlic
In a pitcher or suitable container, add the tomato juice, beet juice, pepperoncini juice, lemon juice, pepper, horseradish, Worcestershire, and garlic. Stir well to combine. Store in the refrigerator until ready to use.
A James Beard Award–winning cookbook and cocktail author with more than 40 published titles to his credit, Fraioli’s books have been featured on Ellen and the Food Network, and in Vogue, People, Forbes, the Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times. He resides in Bellevue, but keeps his sportfishing boat (a 28-foot Albin) in beautiful Anacortes, the gateway to his beloved San Juan Islands. Have a cookbook idea or project in mind? Exotic Exploration Lava lizards, blue-footed boobies, giant tortoises, and more: Go wild for a yachting adventure through the mystical Galápagos Islands.
Welcome to the Galápagos Islands—an isolated archipelago of volcanic islands known around the globe as a dream destination for wildlife enthusiasts looking for the experience of a lifetime. Located in the eastern Pacific Ocean near Ecuador, the Galápagos were made famous by Charles Darwin, whose explorations here inspired the theories on evolution found in his work On the Origin of Species. Touring the Galápagos Islands by yacht offers an inspirational experience reminiscent of Darwin’s travels, albeit more luxurious and glamorous. Throughout your journey, you’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in a mystical land filled with unexpected inhabitants and unique species. As a double World Heritage site, where both land and sea are protected, yacht routes are monitored by Galápagos National Park officials to ease crowding and environmental stress that result in blissful seclusion and undisturbed waters for cruising. With a lack of natural predators, the wildlife inhabitants are remarkably friendly and welcoming, offering visitors an up close and personal experience: swim with sea lions and Pacific sea turtles, scuba dive among hammerhead and whale sharks, and spot exotic marine iguanas, frigate birds, blue-footed boobies, albatross, and penguins on land. Each island features its own distinctive landscape, ranging from barren grounds with volcanic rocks to stunning white sand beaches surrounded by aquamarine waters; every one of them unique. 84
Santa Cruz A perfect spot to begin your journey, the island of Santa Cruz features lush vegetation, a host of exotic birds, and the legendary giant Galápagos tortoises in their natural habitat. Visit the Charles Darwin Research Station and Galápagos National Park headquarters for in-depth and informational look into this mystical environment. When your exploration of the island is complete, your yacht and crew await, ready to transport you on the journey of a lifetime. Española & Punta Suarez Española Island is the most southerly and one of the oldest isles in the archipelago, attracting visitors with its variety of endemic wildlife, including the Española mockingbird, lava lizard, and waved albatross. Punta Suarez, one of the most coveted visitor sites of the Galápagos, is renowned for its albatross breeding colony, as well as “the blowhole,” a proverbial geyser that sprays water some 75 feet into the air. San Cristóbal & Kicker Rock San Cristóbal, the island where Darwin first went ashore, is tranquil and beautiful, and home to Punta Pitt, the only place where all three species of boobies can be seen: blue-footed, red-footed, and Nazca. If snorkeling is on your list, take the tender to Kicker Rock, an underwater paradise
that’s home to exotic schools of fish, hammerhead sharks, and sea lions. Santa Fé & South Plaza Cruise to Santa Fé Island and marvel at its white sand beaches, typically covered with playful sea lions. The turquoise waters are calm and clear, offering the perfect respite for kayaking or snorkeling. Jaunt to the tiny island of South Plaza, known for its lush flora and large colony of Galápagos land iguanas. Genovesa & Prince Philip’s Steps When you arrive at the isle of Genovesa, anchor at Darwin Bay Beach, and head ashore where a short trail past tidal pools and lava ridges leads to a high point overlooking the bay, offering one of the most extraordinary views in Galapagos. Make your way to Prince Philip’s Steps, an extraordinary stairway of rocks arranged by Mother Nature that leads through a seabird colony full of exclusive native species. Santiago & Bartolomé Islands The uninhabited island of Santiago, one of the most popular sites in the Galápagos, offers visitors several spots to stroll stunning land formations, observe inherent wildlife, and enjoy extraordinary diving. Walk across a recent lava flow that sparkles in the sunlight at Sullivan Bay.
Visit Pinnacle Rock, a symbolic landmark in the Galápagos, that projects into Bartolomé’s northern bay. Here you can snorkel in the bay or climb the volcanic cone, an easy trail that leads to panoramic views of the surrounding islands. Rábida Island Rabida Island is home to Red Beach, an intriguing landscape of colorful eroded hills where you can explore a saltwater lagoon, spotting wading birds and ghost crabs along the way. Later, visit Sombrero Chino, where a hike on a white sand beach often features sightings of sea lions, American oystercatchers, lava lizards, marine iguanas, and Sally Lightfoot crabs. After a day of adventure, return to your home on the water, open a bottle of wine, and reminisce about your journey as you cruise back to reality. “THE WRECK ITSELF IS SO COLORFUL. THE METAL RUSTICLES ARE A VIVID RED, AND THERE ARE THE GREENS AND BLUES THAT HAVE COME FROM THE COPPER AND BRASS ELEMENTS ON THE SHIP. IT’S A PALETTE OF BEAUTIFUL COLORS—IT’S LIKE LOOKING AT ABSTRACT ART.” - Stockton Rush, CEO and Founder of OceanGate Inc., and Titanic Expedition Leader
