MARITIME MISSIVES [ INSIDE THE ISSUE ]

Surf’s Up Editor’s Note: As part of my research for our story on Maritime High School this month (pages 56-62), I had the pleasure to meet freshman Chloe Hedge-Pollock. She not only inspired me with her insights on the program but also with photos of her two favorite extracurricular activities—sailboat racing and surfing with pals in Westport. Ride those waves, Chloe!

HELM HELM SWEET Casting out her own net: Seattle’s Allison Demmert draws on family ties to captain a predominantly female crew through the trials and triumphs of the Alaskan salmon fishing season.

The Boat Show, The Boat Show, the Big Seattle Boat Show…

[ THE SOCIAL NETWORK ]

Editor’s Note: To say I enjoyed my deep dive into 75 years of Seattle Boat Show history for our January issue is an understatement, but letters such as this one always make that dive even more worthwhile. Kudos to the Northwest Marine Trade Association and SBS teams for making the 75th edition one for the books!

Editor’s Note: Our January profile on Allison Demmert, and her inspiring journey to captain the Ultimo and a predominantly female crew during the Alaskan fishing season, received a lot of love and support online, including from the source herself. Helm, sweet helm, indeed.

Michelle & Kate – I want to thank you for the amazing Seattle Boat Show feature in the January issue. Yes, it is a Show Like No Other and your support over many years has been a big part of our success. I have struggled over the years to describe the show history concisely and this will be something I will use often. Great work with the writing, Kate! So glad you were able to include Louis and Jack.

@Allison Demmert: NW Yachting is a woman-owned, women-run magazine supporting women in maritime. Thank you to college friend Kate Calamusa for this wonderful write-up in their January issue! @Priscilla Christine Morgan: Women empowering Women. Love it! @Annette Gehlen Rosenberger: Wow Allison you are an amazing inspiration for women. So proud of you and your accomplishments. I’m sure it’s been challenging and hope you continue to inspire many more @Brandi Richards Olson: Amazing article. Love every bit of it Allison Demmert! @Jessica Demmert: That’s my cousin! I’ve always admired her abilities but this—!#42ProudCousin

[ NEW FOR THE BLUE ]

Third Wave Crests for Maritime Blue Innovation Accelerator Pacific Northwest entrepreneurs were featured heavily in the latest batch of new companies chosen for the third wave of participants in the Maritime Blue Innovation Accelerator program. A total of 10 startups, seven of them based in the Northwest, were picked as participants in what the program refers to as the “third cohort,” which will receive assistance in growing their innovative ideas via venture capital investments, co-working space opportunities, workshops, and access to mentors and advisors in their fields. The accelerator program for this cohort is estimated to last over a period of four months. Co-sponsored by the Port of Seattle and the Washington State Department of Commerce, the accelerator, now in its third year, was formed to promote the growing maritime economy across the region. The diversity of business fields covered in this cohort—from digital technologies to sustainably sourced foods to engine innovations— is representative of the wide-ranging scope of the “blue” economy.

The locally based participants in the third cohort include: • Adhere Gear (adheregearpodpaq.com): This Portland-based company provides smart cargo communication systems that track ocean container manifests to prevent supply chain bottlenecks. • Blue Dot Kitchen (seacharrones.com): This Bainbridge Island operation makes vegan snack foods with kelp sustainably sourced from the Salish Sea. • Carbon Orca (carbon-orca.myshopify.com): A Seattle-based manufacturer of electric hydrofoil boards. • Duplex M (tech-viking.com): A new project for Anacortes-based firm Tech-Viking that makes digital tools to track accurate energy consumption information for battery-powered technologies. • Photon Marine (photonmarine.com): A new Portland company that makes electric outboard engines for fleet vessels. • Sea Potential (letsseapotential.com): A provider of diversity training in the Seattle and Tacoma maritime industries. • Steamchain (steamchaincorp.com): This Beaverton, Oregon, based company simplifies global B2B payments via a smart contract platform that automatically converts currencies and reduces rate fluctuation. For a more detailed list of all 10 of the selected Third Wave companies, go to the Maritime Blue Accelerator page at: maritimeblue.org/third-wave/.

[ REDUCING MARINE EMISSIONS ]

Bellingham Firm Begins Sea Trials for Zero-Emissions Fuel-Cell Ferry All American Marine, a Bellingham-based boat builder, began sea trials at the end of 2021 for the first hydrogen-powered, zero-emissions passenger ferry to operate in the United States. Named the Sea Change and operated by Switch Maritime, the high-tech, 70-foot catamaran is expected to begin operations this spring in San Francisco Bay. With a capacity of 75 passengers, the twin-hulled Sea Change is powered by hydrogen fuel cells developed by California-based Zero Emissions Industries. The fuel cells produce 360 kW of electricity and are integrated with 100 kWh of lithium-ion batteries for the vessel’s BAE Systems electric propulsion powertrain. Using this system, the ferry can reach a top speed of 18 mph and has an estimated range of 300 miles. The concept for

the hydrogen-oxygen, fuel-cell technology that powers the Sea Change is nearly a century old, but its use has grown in recent years for its ability to produce low-cost electricity from electrochemical reactions that emit only warm water as a byproduct. Once it completes its shakedown cruises this year in Bellingham Bay and the Bay Area, the Sea Change could become a pioneering example of commercial green technology usage in the global maritime industry, which is currently responsible for about 3% of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions each year. As the fuel-cell trials continue, All American Marine said it is working on building other fuel-cell and hybrid-electric vessels for the U.S. Coast Guard. Switch Maritime, based in Norwalk, CT, said it wants to

work with existing ferry owners around the country to help “de-carbonize” the nation’s older, diesel-powered commercial boats. While neither All American nor Switch has current plans to expand fuel-cell ferry technology in the Puget Sound area, Washington State Ferries (WSF) said it plans to begin construction of its first hybrid-electric, Olympic-class ferry this year, with an estimated launch target of 2025. WSF also said it expects to begin converting its three aging Jumbo Mark II vessels to hybrid-electric power in 2022. For more information on the Sea Change, go to: allamericanmarine.com.

[ BUILT FOR THE NORTHWEST ]

New Whitacre 47 Cat Nears Completion for June Release A new line of liveaboard catamarans will soon be plying the waters of Puget Sound, created by a partnership of boat builders in Anacortes called Whitacre Catamarans. The limited edition Whitacre 47 cat will be the group’s first production model and is expected to debut in June. The Whitacre Catamaran team said the 47 will be a “competitively priced entry” to the fast-growing global catamaran market. Once completed, the eco-engineered vessel will be packed with low-carbon features, such as hybrid-electric/ diesel propulsion and battery-powered systems that can be charged with solar energy. The team is also beginning working on the design for a smaller cruising cat, the Whitacre 42. Unlike similar large, twin-hulled boats designed by European and South African builders for the Caribbean charter market, the Whitacre 47 has been designed and tooled specifically for year-round, northern latitude cruising, the team said. The 47 offers a wide range of ample interior layouts and high-efficiency electrical and mechanical systems for potential liveaboard use. The use of composite construction will reduce the craft’s weight but make it reliably strong and durable enough to exceed strict CE Offshore standards. The collaboration was formed by two legendary boat designers, Hal Whitacre of Whitacre Yacht Design and James Betts of Betts Boats. The two engineers also joined with Mike Mullenberg of Pacific Cruising Yachts and TC Skeels and Kelly Rinehart of Bug House Yachts to help bring the all-season catamaran to life. Before he began working on the Whitacre 47, Hal Whitacre completed a seven-year contract with catamaran builder Gunboat at its North Carolina boatyard, focusing on the Gunboat 55 and 78 models. As a fun bonus, Whitacre Catamarans also makes it possible to witness the progress of the 47’s construction through a series of behind-the-scenes videos on its Build Blog. Learn more about the 47 and check out the boat’s progress on the company’s website at: whitacrecatamarans.com. RENDERING COURTESY OF WHITACRE CATAMARANS 26

Glidden to Replace Departing Jones at Elliott Bay Marina After being purchased by Southern Marinas Holdings II last year, Elliott Bay Marina is facing another sea change in its leadership as it welcomes Jordan Glidden as its new general manager. Glidden replaced Dwight Jones, who stepped down as the marina’s general manager on January 21st to pursue ownership of another Seattle marina (a big congrats to him!). Jones has worked at Elliott Bay Marina since its inception nearly 30 years ago. A statement released by Elliott Bay Marina staff described Glidden as an active

member of the Seattle maritime industry, who spent the last eight years “in a variety of positions, understanding the complexities of Elliott Bay’s operation and establishing great relationships with all our members.” Additionally, Dennis Halpin, the marina’s current assistant Harbormaster, will assume the role as Harbormaster previously held by Glidden. Feeling Invincible Go fish! Florida’s esteemed Invincible Boats sportfishing line is now available in the Northwest from Schooner Boat Works.

AN AERIAL VIEW OF THE NEW 37’ CATAMARAN. PHOTO COURTESY OF INVINCIBLE BOATS 32

Avid anglers, take note: There’s a new fishing expert ready to tackle Puget Sound waters. Florida-based Invincible Boats has recently made its way from the eastern seaboard to the left coast, with two of its sport fishing models—the popular 39’ open monohull and new 37’ catamaran—now available in Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia via Schooner Boat Works. The twin-hulled, twin-stepped catamaran, seen at last month’s Seattle Boat Show, is well equipped for your next weekend on the water. Sporting 360-degree walk-around fishability on deck and a 600-plus nautical mile range, the catamaran offers a wealth of accessory upgrade options: heavy-duty swivel rod holders; electric reel outlets; or even an in-floor, 70-gallon livewell equipped with a stunning clear top so that you can admire your catch after the fact. Invincible Boats made their debut in 2006 with a monohull design that impressed offshore anglers with its speed and maneuverability in water. Now the catamaran models feature a hybrid multihull design that maintains the same powerful, yet stable ride while offering more space for a few more fishing buddies to board. For more details on all the models available from Invincible Boats at Schooner Creek, visit: schoonercreek.com.

Serving Canapé by the Bay One look at this eye-catching serving board will have party guests feeling as if they’re strolling through the surf on a lazy afternoon. Handmade by Maine-based artist Meghan Surette, this enchanting serving tray from Uncommon Goods uses vibrant layers of food-safe epoxy to create a startlingly realistic depiction of a receding wave on a woodgrain shore. A whimsical nautical cleat on each end of the 15-inch maple board provides a secure grip for carrying charcuterie and crudités. However, this one-of-a-kind piece of culinary art is not a cutting board, so be sure to prepare food on a different surface before presenting. Handwash in warm water and add an occasional dab of mineral oil to ensure that the board will transport you to seaside getaways for years to come. $85 // uncommongoods.com

Gotta GO? Put it in a Pelican The weather may be getting a little warmer, but springtime seas in the Northwest can still be rough. Protect your valuables from the elements with these durable Pelican G10 “GO Cases,” which come with a lifetime guarantee. Essential items, such as keys, cellphones, credit cards, charging cables, jewelry, and watches, can all be neatly organized and shielded from drops overboard or spills on deck. Made of abrasion- and impact-proof ABS thermoplastic polymer and protected by rubberized bumpers, each 21-cubic-inch GO Case provides a barrier against water, dirt, snow, and dust. It even has a pressure valve to provide watertight storage for up to 30 minutes when submerged to a depth of up to one meter. $29.95 // Available from Fisheries Supply, fisheriessupply.com

Warmth in the Palm of Your Hand During spring days, when the layering of clothing is a must in the volatile Northwest climate, these Merino 150 Sensor Liners can protect your hands in the elements and make them look good doing it. Either worn inside heavier gloves on icy days or on their own during sunbreaks, these liners keep fingers in top condition, with recycled polyester and Merino interlock wool for warmth and moisture-wicking performance. The breathable fabric is naturally odor resistant, so you don’t have to bring ocean smells back home at the end of a day on the water. The Sensor Liners from Outdoor Research also have textured tips on the thumb and index finger, making them touchscreen-compatible for operating digital technology in the cold. Fitted with a tapered wrist, these comfortable, quick-drying liners will stay in place all day. $30 // outdoorresearch.com

Get a Grip with Bahama Boat Shoes Don’t get tripped up again on slick, rolling decks. The Omni-Grip soles on this stylish Bahama Vent Loco footwear from Columbia, featuring razor-siped treads that push water away, will keep your feet firmly planted in all kinds of weather. These elegant boat shoes also have vented ports on each side and are cushioned with sturdy Techlite EVA midsoles, giving you the arch support needed in an active marine environment. Even after a long day of sportfishing, the Bahama shoes are ready for relaxing at an evening cocktail party. Available in graphite, oatmeal, and steam colors. $75 // columbia.com

Made of tough ABS plastic, these convenient line cutters can connect to jackets, tackle bags, soft-sided coolers, waders—anything with a zipper. The curved plastic casing conceals a razor sharp, ceramic-coated blade that can precisely slice through braided, monofilament, or fluorocarbon lines like a knife through butter. The curved cutting slots on either side protect fingers from coming into contact with the recessed cutting surface. As seen in an episode of Shark Tank, these inexpensive tools also include a textured, non-slip grip to give you control, even in the slipperiest of settings. $14 each, or $55 for a 5-pack // linecutterz.com

When you want to purchase a new pilothouse boat built for Pacific Northwest conditions, look no further than right here in the Upper Left. First introduced in 2020, this 52-foot beauty from Apollonian has been upgraded for 2022 with even more spacious interiors and elegant, swept back lines. The vessel is designed by renowned naval architect Howard Apollonio in conjunction with longtime yacht salesman Vic Parcells and features a true raised pilothouse, three staterooms, and three heads to comfortably accommodate up to six people. The main deck has an open pilothouse space, with a captain’s chair, a dinette settee, and dining table. Throughout the interior, the décor includes abundant American Cherry finishes, including burled cabinet tops. The standard navigation equipment on the Apollonian 52 helm reads like a list of luxury options on other boats of this size. A deluxe Garmin electronics package features a Phantom radar, autopilot with remote, AIS, VHF, electronic charts, and twin 16” 8616MFD displays, with two 11” repeaters on the flybridge. Other equipment includes a Lewmar electric windlass, an AGM 8D battery system, and an electric bow thruster. Aft of the helm to starboard is a convenient day head, and to port is the fully furnished galley with a double sink, a four-burner electric stove, and several stainless steel appliances, including a range oven, microwave, dishwasher, trash compactor, and 10.4-cubic-foot refrigerator. Three steps lead down to the salon, which is decked out with a Bose sound system and a recessed Samsung LCD TV opposite a U-shaped couch. An aft sliding door exits from the salon to the cockpit, which has an integral swim platform and swim step on the transom. A floating staircase leads up to the large, open flybridge and boat deck, which includes a second helm station, an al fresco dining table, a wet bar, and an electric BBQ grill. Aft of the flybridge is a lounge deck with a sun pad and plenty of stowage space for an RIB. Belowdecks is a full-beam master suite with a queen-sized island berth and an en suite head. The large VIP cabin also has a queen bed and direct access to an en suite head, while the third cabin features two bunkbeds. Cruising in the mid-teens and topping out at 18 knots, the 52 is powered by twin Cummins QSB 6.7 direct-drive diesel inboards, producing a combined 850 hp. For an added kick, an option for two 660-hp Cummins engines is available to push the top speed past 20 knots.

B RO KE R’S B E ST BY RANDY WOODS

1999 Hallberg-Rassy 31 Sail into spring on this impressively appointed, impeccably maintained sailboat available at Elliott Bay Yacht Sales. This well-maintained sloop is ideal for single-handed cruising on the Salish Sea, but also roomy enough for entertaining up to six people. To date, the Nordic Star has had only two owners and has performed well in all types of Northwest weather. The interior provides a surprising amount of space for a 31-footer. Accommodations include two separate double cabins—one forward and one aft—plus a full-size salon and chart table. There’s even an ample galley that includes an Optimus two-burner propane cooktop, a Frigoboat refrigerator, a Goldstar microwave, and a double stainless steel sink. The salon, fitted with a Kenwood CD/stereo receiver, has two settees on opposite sides with cushioned seats that can convert to wide-single berths. The entire lower deck is made of teak and holly flooring, protected by carpeting throughout. To keep out any rough weather elements, the aft cockpit can be fully enclosed and has access to most of the lines. The cockpit includes a mounted chart Raymarine C90W chartplotter, a Furuno NAVpilot-511, and Autohelm radar, depth, and windspeed controls. The chart table is also stowable in a lazarette. A couple of 2-meter-long teak seats in the cockpit also contain more stowage space on the starboard side. 44

Sails include a North Sails fully battened main, gennaker, and riding/ anchoring, plus a Port Townsend Sails roller-furling genoa, all guided by responsive tiller steering. Deck elements include teak handrails, an aluminum toe-rail, a Lewmar windlass, an easy-to-see compass in the instrument console above a sliding hatch, port and starboard kayak racks, and a rail-mounted Magma gas BBQ. The stern has an integrated bathing platform and a folding ladder. The HR 31’s medium-displacement monohull is fitted with an efficient keel, rudder, and a modern fractional rig. The hull is made of isophthalic polyester and protected by NGA-gelcoat, providing insulation above the waterline against heat and cold. A reliable inboard, 16-hp Volvo Penta MD 2020 diesel engine with a three-blade folding prop provides power in a slack wind. To keep the Nordic Star in top condition, all rigging was inspected by Yacht Fitters in 2020 with minor repairs completed. The sail drive, prop shaft, and oil and fuel filters were all serviced and replaced last year. Upgrades in 2022 include the Volvo Penta heat exchanger, exhaust elbow, and waterlock muffler.

Marina makeover: Once considered solely as “Milltown,” Everett prepares for its aquatic close-up with the new Waterfront Place development. By Randy Woods

Everett, Washington, has always been a boating town. Boats and ships of all sizes have been navigating Port Gardner Bay long before the city was founded in 1890, and today both the U.S. Navy base and the Port of Everett Marina— the largest public moorage facility on the West Coast— draw vessels from near and far.

Everett, Washington, has always been a boating town. Boats and ships of all sizes have been navigating Port Gardner Bay long before the city was founded in 1890, and today both the U.S. Navy base and the Port of Everett Marina—the largest public moorage facility on the West Coast—draw vessels from near and far. But for most of the last century, Everett had an image problem. Its waterfront was untethered from the city itself. For decades, much of the waterfront at the mouth of the Snohomish River was dominated by shingle factories, boat-builders, and wood pulp mills. In the early 20th century, Everett’s industrial boom earned the city the nicknames “Milltown” and “City of Smokestacks.” Then the city’s commercial center of gravity shifted further south to the Boeing plant in the 1970s, and Everett was known more for boatbuilding than sheltering recreational boats. When Naval Station Everett came to town in the early 1990s, it purchased land from the Port of Everett, generating $40 million to build a massive marina with 2,300 boat slips and 5,000 feet of guest dock space. Today, another new marina renaissance is underway at the Port of Everett. Beginning in 2018, the Port started work on the Waterfront Place project, a 1.5-million-square-foot, mixed-use development on 65 acres, bringing in new retailers, restaurants, boatyard businesses, and residential complexes to the docks, all arranged in a more concentrated, walkable “town square” environment. “I’m happy to report we are officially in the home stretch,” said Lisa Lefeber, CEO of the Port of Everett. “This project is transforming the Port of Everett Marina, making it a true destination marina.” John Seger, Commodore of the Everett Yacht Club, was blunt about his assessment of the area. “Everett wasn’t much of a destination, really,” he said. “Having people living around the marina will bring more foot traffic. The facility upgrades will make it a nicer, more welcoming place to visit.” The first phase of the project, a $50 million development called Fisherman’s Harbor, is nearing completion with the opening of a

new marina-wide promenade and Pacific Rim Plaza, featuring a soon-to-be-iconic public fountain. Other additions include the 142-room Hotel Indigo and 266 new condo and apartment units. Last fall, the Port broke ground on new restaurant and retail foundations, including Fisherman Jack’s restaurant and the South Fork Bakery. Later this year, Lefeber said the Port hopes to open a new Woods Coffee shop, a Sound2Summit brewery, a wine bar, more tap rooms, an ice cream shop, a café, and a year-round fish market. Boating Interests In addition to all the new restaurant and hospitality businesses coming to Waterfront Place, there are some familiar boating groups, plus a few fresh ones, who are looking to add amenities for boating members. One of the oldest and most recognizable is the Everett Yacht Club, which has been around since 1907. Last year, the club vacated its old clubhouse to relocate to an existing structure that used to house the old Port Administration Building in South Marina. The new space, which includes on observation tower with commanding views of the marina, should be open by May or June. “We had been looking for a new place for several years,” Seger said. “The new building had been too small for the way we ran the club in the past. But we’ve changed since then, and we’re getting rid of the events business.” One of the most attractive aspects of the club’s new space will be its location overlooking Commodore Park, above 150 feet of moorage space. “We’re a cruising club,” he explained. “Boaters either come and sit on their boats or go to the marina on Friday nights. The Port wasn’t a really public space before, but now we expect more members will use the dock.” Waterline Boats has also secured a brand-new space near K Dock and the Pacific Rim fountain. Gretchen Miles, a Waterline Boats 53

broker, said their building should be open sometime this month. “Between Seattle and Anacortes, there weren’t many places worth stopping at,” she said. “It’s going to be a nice draw with the redevelopment.” Best of all, Miles added, the brokerage will be adjacent to “beautiful display moorage, so we can show our boats in front of our office. We’re going to be near all sorts of activities, events, and new restaurants.” Another new tenant on K Dock will be the Freedom Boat Club, whose members can reserve use of the club’s five boats for day use or extended cruises. The club, which has a dozen locations around Puget Sound, expects to increase its fleet size to nine boats by the end of 2022, said sales manager Keith Lemley. “Everett, in general, is really having a resurgence,” Lemley said. “There are a lot of growth opportunities for us, plus greater accessibility to the San Juan Islands. Also, people who live in condos don’t have places to store a boat, so we’ve become a great fit for them.” Economic Engine All told, Waterfront Place is predicted to attract $550 million in new public-private investment to the city, Lefeber said. Once all new businesses are in place, she said the project should support more than 2,000 family-wage jobs, in addition to many more temporary construction jobs during build-out in the next phase expansions. Just to the south of the marina, Everett’s “Mills to Maritime”

project will add marine businesses on the site of the former Kimberly-Clark pulp mill. Once completed this fall, a new 40-acre cargo terminal will generate even more marine-industry jobs in the region. Waterfront Place, as well, has made marine businesses another major focus. Future plans include a new commercial fishing pier and support infrastructure for Everett’s fishing fleet. The Port has also created a “Craftsman District” boatyard to support the local boat repair and maintenance industry. In December of 2021, the Port also announced it had selected a developer to begin planning for the second and largest phase of the project, an area dubbed the “Millwright District” that will be devoted to establishing a waterfront employment hub, supporting office users with surrounding destination retail, residential, and public spaces. This phase is expected to break ground in 2023. All in all, the future of the Port is looking bright, with the hope that once the work is completed in the old “City of Smokestacks,” Everett will no longer be just another moorage stop between Seattle and the San Juans, but a desirable destination in its own right. “At Waterfront Place, we are building a community where you can do five things year-round,” Lefeber concludes. “You can eat, drink, sleep, work, and recreate all in one place.” >> For more on the new Waterfront Place, go to: waterfront-place.com. IT’S MARITIME FOR SCHOOL In a class of its own: How a Northwest high school is rethinking education to create new opportunities within Washington’s maritime industry.

Every school morning, the alarm sounds at 5:20 a.m. for 14-year-old Chloe Hedge-Pollock as she shakes off sleep, gets dressed, and hustles out the door by 6:20 so that she and her family can travel from their home in Port Orchard and catch the ferry to Fauntleroy. After docking and dropping off her brother at school in West Seattle, the remaining mother-daughter duo continue on to Des Moines, where the 9th grader hops out of the car, walks through the campus doors, and heads to class. Though noteworthy in itself, the lengthy commute to school is not the only thing that distinguishes Hedge-Pollock’s high school experience. It’s also differentiated by the academy she attends. Hedge-Pollock is one of the 37 students currently enrolled in the new Maritime High School, an innovative public program that was kick-started in September and is now sailing through the 2021-2022 school year with its first class. Run by the Highline School District in collaboration with several community partners including the Northwest Maritime Center in Port Townsend, Port of Seattle, and the Duwamish Community River Coalition, the school aims to educate students about the local maritime industry through hands-on, project-based learning in marine sciences and environmental studies—all while creating internship opportunities and access to jobs in the field after graduation. “Our goal is simple, yet powerful: to connect our students to their callings,” explains Principal Tremain Holloway, a Harvard alum who was tapped to lead the school after a stint with Highline’s similarly structured Raisbeck Aviation High School. “And the experiences we provide really open the students’ eyes to the potential callings that exist for them right here in their own community.” It was the community’s proximity to the maritime industry and the industry’s future need that spawned the idea for the program in the first place. Jake Beattie, executive director for Northwest Maritime Center, attended a conference in 2019 with about 80 other maritime professionals plus Port of Seattle Commissioners Fred Felleman and Ryan Calkins, and recalls the discussion centered around a question that’s been looming large for almost 20 years: Where is the next generation of workers going to come from? There has been much discussion, both regionally and nationally, over the coming silver tsunami as the baby boomer generation retires from the workforce, and in maritime that wave looks to be larger than most. Additionally, Commissioner Calkins estimates there are 60,000 direct maritime jobs based in Seattle alone, encompassing everything from shipbuilding to tourism. Of all the possible answers bandied about, it was the idea for a school that would introduce the workers of tomorrow to the many available family wage jobs within maritime that soon rose to the top of the class. “When he [Calkins] first proposed it, I immediately raised my hand and said, ‘We’re in’,” says NMC’s Beattie. “Quite enthusiastically so, I might add.”

59

“It’s like being at a start-up; we’re encouraging an attitude of entrepreneurship in our students, an attitude of shaking up the norm and adopting an insatiable curiosity for life that will help them as they choose a career path.” -Tremain Holloway, principal of Maritime High School

With NMC and several other maritime partners onboard, the Highline School District was a natural pick to take the helm of the educational portion due to its success in launching the aforementioned aviation school and the district’s diverse student body that would provide a wide net of possible students. (The school is open to any student in the Puget Sound region that wishes to apply with 51% of the seats reserved for students who live within the boundaries of the Highline School District.) “Eighty percent of our population is non-white and most of our students live within 5 miles of the water. But traditionally, maritime has not been an industry they are familiar with or necessarily one they have had easy access to,” explains Holloway. Many of the students’ first introductions are made outside of the classroom, in immersive settings throughout the Puget Sound, and some are seeing the view from the water for the first time ever. “At one of our early All Aboard events, one student kept putting his hands in the water and when asked why, he replied that he just wanted to know what saltwater felt like,” recalls Holloway. “It’s been amazing to see these kids get outside of the classroom, get out on the water, and discover new things about the place they call home.” Other outings have included: a voyage planning lesson aboard NMC’s 40-foot-long Admiral Jack passenger ferry; navigation studies with the crew of the schooner Adventuress; and learning about the efforts to clean the waters of the Duwamish River by traveling along and on it. This spring, 60

students will head back to Port Townsend to learn how to pilot the Admiral Jack and even earn hours towards their captain’s licenses. Back on campus, students work on their classroom learning through a variety of projects and are encouraged to follow their passions through personalized plans designed in collaboration with their teachers and advisors. For Chloe Hedge-Pollock—a self-described beach lover and marine animal aficionado—that has meant spending extra time caring for the fish in the school’s tilapia lab. A real-life aquaponics system, the lab’s tanks are connected to water-filled trays, where each student tends to either a plant or vegetable fertilized by the waste by-products created by the tilapia. An avid surfer, Hedge-Pollock is also looking forward to being the design leader of a team project to construct a three-person canoe this semester. Students are working in teams of ten to first build model craft, then construct the finished designs out of marine plywood, which they will test out on the river. “I love being out on the water,” says Hedge-Pollock, who is also a member of a varsity sailing team in Gig Harbor, a passion she found after attending summer camp and one that has only grown over the course of the year at MHS. “It feels very accomplished to be able to use a boat how it’s supposed to be used, to control the speed, the pace, everything.”

62

It’s little wonder then that her eyes are even more alight as she recalls a Zoom presentation from a few of the women engineers and scientists aboard the University of Washington’s research vessel, Nautilus. “They told us about their efforts mapping the ocean floors all around the world, and I just thought that would be the coolest job ever,” she says, stating that one of her goals now is to score an internship on the vessel. “And we get to meet so many people like that, from so many different career paths, it’s really an awesome opportunity.” It’s the eye-opening moments like these that have Principal Holloway convinced that the school will grow in the years to come. Maritime High School recently wrapped up applications for the 2022-2023 school year, and will scale up the class sizes each year. At full capacity, Holloway expects to have between 400-450 students enrolled, which potentially means hundreds of more workers flowing into the field, and more opportunities for women and people of color, too. “We really celebrate our students, no matter what they decide to do after high school,” he concludes. “While they’re here with us, we are going to give them hope, inspiration, and the power to choose who they want to be. I like to think of it as connecting those in need of power to those in power.” >> For more information on Maritime High School, visit: maritime.highlineschools.org.

SET FOR SPRING: NOCO GENIUS BOOST JUMP STARTER AND A WI-FI ENABLED COOLER BY DOMETIC.

Supply & Demand DAVID FARBER, store manager of the beloved local emporium Fisheries Supply, chats buzzworthy new products and prepping your boat for the season ahead. The arrival of March hopefully means some nicer days are on the horizon, and thus more time spent back out on the water. What are a few of the essential supplies you think boaters should stock up on for spring? Take this time to check over your boat for any needed spares on the boat like filters, impellers, etc. You don’t want to be kept off the water because of a little part that you don’t have! Also, make sure you check your batteries and bilge pumps after the winter. This is the time of the year that both can take the hardest beating. As a back-up, I think that every boat with an engine should have a jump starter onboard like the ones from Noco. Spring also seems like a great time to check on safety supplies like on-board fire extinguishers, beacons, and ditch bags. For the latter, what are some of the items that boaters could think to include in the colder spring months? Think about staying warm. Emergency blankets are important to have in your safety bag. I would also keep spare clothes onboard in case someone ends up being pulled from the water; you want to make sure you can get them in dry clothes as soon as possible. Additionally, as people rely on their phones more and more for safety, make sure you have a drybag for your phone that you can slip it into and still use. I also try to carry a backup battery to recharge devices. Fisheries Supply is carrying Powerbanks from Biolite that can use to recharge your phones several times. There have been quite a few advancements in alternative power sources in the past couple of years, and as we all know redundancy on board is a good thing. What are a few of your favorite alternative back-up options? Solar has really taken off for all boats, power and sail. Boaters now want to sit at anchor and not have to listen to the noise of a generator. The key is setting up the system correctly for each boat. It can really vary depending on what mounting options are available on your vessel. Also, not all panels and charge controllers are made alike. Panel wattages

can be deceiving, for example, you may have two 100-watt panels from different manufactures and one maybe less efficient than the other by as much as 10%. Go for a quality brand like Sun Power for maximum bang for your buck. In addition, the charge controller can make a significant difference. Victron makes one of the best MPPT (charge) controllers on the market and you will always get more out of your panels. (MPPT is an acronym for maximum power point tracking.) What are a few of your current favorite new products in the store? Anything that you feel is especially noteworthy, new, or different? I think the last two years have been about making your boat your way to escape. People are looking to make their boats as comfortable as possible and are upgrading their systems across the board, especially their electrical systems….2022 is also the year of the connected boat. There are so many ways to view what is going on with your boats systems and ways to integrate Wi-Fi and Bluetooth that are now built into devices across the boat. It seems novel at first, but once you start to use the information you can extend your time out on the water and the life of your systems. ABOUT THE EXPERT: We have a team that is truly interested in boating. A large percentage of our staff are boat owners and several live aboard. I often feel that Fisheries Supply is the center of our boating community and I always love to see when customers are in our store, and they run into someone that they have not seen in years. Founded in 1928, Fisheries has stood the test of time because we are here for that community. We truly want more people out on the water using their boats, and we realize that this encompasses everyone: the boat builders, boat yards, mobile repair specialists, do-it-yourselfers, and the person that just wants to be out on the water. >> For more information on Fisheries Supply, and to stock up on essentials for spring boating, visit their store near Gasworks Park in Seattle or go to fisheriessupply.com 65

TI GH T L I N E S BY MARK YUASA, WDFW

Plenty of Fish in the Sea MARK YUASA outlines your best bets for angling spring Chinook in the beloved fishing hamlet of Sekiu. No matter how big of a fish you’ve caught or how many, there are certain saltwater salmon fishing areas in Washington where the memories tend to stand out from the rest. One precious gem that always comes to mind after spending nearly half a century chasing salmon around the state is Sekiu (Marine Catch Area 5), a widely recognized, small fishing hamlet where many are pinning hopes for a repeat of the 2021 gangbuster season. “Fishing for winter Chinook stayed pretty consistent last season from when we opened on March 1 until it ended,” said Brandon Mason, owner of Mason’s Olson Resort at Sekiu. “To build on the opportunities, you’ve got other fish to catch like sea bass and lingcod just to the west in Area 4B when it opens in mid-March.” More icing on the cake: The Sekiu hatchery Chinook season will be open daily from March 1 to April 30 without any possible early catch guideline/encounter closure. Furthermore, the optimism continues as the fish caught during this time period tend to be much larger in size. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) coded-wire tag analysis shows that the fish regularly move out in late winter and early spring from Puget Sound feeding grounds and congregate in the western Strait. Many of these “feeder” Chinook are entering their third and fourth year of life, and begin to sexually mature in the next few months, eventually migrating back to Puget Sound hatcheries in summer and fall. This elevates their feeding pattern by feasting on abundant schools of candlefish and herring baitfish in the Strait, and equates to brawny winter Chinook in the 8- to 15-pound range with a few exceeding 20-plus pounds. Getting to the fishing grounds doesn’t take very long as an area called the “Caves” is located just around the breakwater from nearby resort docks. On an outgoing tide, start at the breakwater’s eastern tip in 90 to 175 feet of water, and keep an eye on your fishfinder for schools of baitfish. The tide should push you in a westerly direction for a few miles until you arrive at Eagle Bay just off the Hoko River mouth. Another go-to spot is just east of Clallam Bay at the green buoy off Slip Point, Mussolini Rock, the Coal Mine and Slide areas, and further east are Cod Fish Bay and Pillar Point. The Area 5 boundary lines cover a lot of fishing territory from Low Point at mouth of the Lyre River on the eastern 66

boundary, heading west to the mouth of the Sekiu River. Most anglers troll with downriggers using a whole or cut-plug herring, an Ace Hi Fly or hoochies (plastic squid). Other lures that work include a Tomic Plug or Silver Horde spoon. Drift or motor mooching is another method that garners the attention of anglers working a whole or cut-plug herring up and down the entire water column. Another method is jigging with a Point Wilson Dart, Buzz Bomb, Crippled Herring, or Dungeness Stinger. Sekiu an ideal location for small boats because they are protected from predominant southerly winds that hit the Olympic Peninsula mountains. There are two resorts, Van Riper’s and Mason’s Olson, that open in the late winter and early spring and offer amenities, moorage, fuel and accommodations. You can also book a charter boat through the resorts. On a separate note for Puget Sounders: As of print deadline for this issue, the reopening date for the central Puget Sound (Area 10) winter Chinook fishery had yet to be determined. Area 10 opened on Jan. 1, but closed two weeks later after WDFW determined the fishery was almost halfway through the catch guideline and wanted to ensure more quality fishing time this month when larger fish begin to appear in catches. WDFW indicated Area 10 could open sometime in late February or the first week of March. It is likely the fishing will be allowed three days per week with a one salmon daily limit and the area will close once the catch guideline is achieved. For updates, go to: wdfw.wa.gov. Until it reopens, look to the southern Puget Sound (Area 13), which is open year-round for salmon, and has been fair at times in places like Fox Island, Anderson Island, Devils Head, and Johnson Point. I’ll be making plans to hit the Strait this month for winter Chinook and will see you on the water soon! Mark Yuasa is a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Communications Consultant, and longtime fishing and outdoor writer. Born and raised in Seattle and a UW alum, Mark spent 33 years at the Seattle Times. He volunteers with the BSA Chief Seattle Council and National Order of the Arrow organizations, and enjoys fishing for salmon and other fish species in local waterways.

R AC I N G SH E E T BY DOUG HANSEN | PHOTO BY HANS JURGEN WEINDHARDT

Taking Center Stage DOUG HANSEN previews the refreshed racing schedule and structure for Corinthian Yacht Club’s spring Center Sound Series. It’s true, spring is just around the corner. Looking to the future and the upcoming, rapidly approaching, Seattle spring racing season can conjure a wide range of feelings depending on who you are. Whether you’re preparing a vessel, rebuilding a boat, or part of the organizing group hosting the events, there are always a lot of things that all must come together and every year, curve balls are thrown in the mix. One of the big shake-ups for the 2022 season is a logistical one. The Corinthian Yacht Club of Seattle is making a change in the (almost set in stone as of press time) spring racing schedule. For the first time in a long time, races are being spread out on the calendar more evenly across the season. Traditionally, the Center Sound Series consumed most of the Saturdays in March, back-to-back-to-back. With the new changes, there will be a two-week gap between each race of the series, with Blakely Rocks on March 5, the second on March 19 (location to be determined, more on that below), and the third and final race not until April 2 (also TBD at press). Many Northwest sailors have come to jokingly refer to the month of March as “divorce month” thanks to the seemingly endless racing and talk of racing, which consume what normal people consider family time. This shift in the calendar is a direct response by Corinthian Yacht Club leadership to the feedback from the racing community requesting more of a focus on the overall enjoyment of sailing. Expectations are high that this shifted format will increase overall attendance in the series and ease some of the logistical challenges that consecutive racing weekends present. Along with the new dates, there is also an accompanying change in the overall structure of racing on the water. For many years, the series was a

70

set of pre-defined races to specific points around Puget Sound. In recent years, there has been a string of last-minute course changes and updates to allow for the best racing that can be held on the day. This year, the first race of the series will remain the time-honored Blakely Rocks Race, with the twenty-ish mile course being a terrific shakedown for crews coming off a winter of no sailing. But after that, we are going to see some new developments. Rather than a pre-defined course likely to change, racers should expect no pre-posted course and the race committee will determine the course on the day of the race, based on the expected conditions. This wait and see format is functionally what has been happening the past few years, but now it is clarified as part of the plan and even reflected by the name of each of the three events. For the sake of tradition, if the weather and conditions are appropriate, it is not out of the question that fleets will be sent on the traditional courses, but if there is fun racing to be had elsewhere in Puget Sound, then that’s where the fleets will be sent. The overarching goal is to maximize the quality of racing, based on whatever the conditions may be on race day. Personally, I think this change is a good update to what has, honestly, become a somewhat predictable racing season and provides a very real opportunity for some balance in the life of a Seattle sailor in the spring. How it fits and works within the larger calendar and schedule remains to be seen, but without change there can’t be growth. In addition to the newly rescheduled programming of the annual spring series, there is so much in store this summer as postponed events are rescheduled and major international events are being held for the first time in a long time. This summer of sailing is certain not to disappoint.

S E A FA R E BY JAMES O. FRAIOLI | PHOTO BY TUCKER + HOSSLER PHOTOGRAPHY

Rock the Boat New food and drink columnist JAMES O. FRAIOLI brings the tropics on board with this pineapple rum and ginger-kissed cocktail from a rock legend. For you skippers out there, you’ve probably heard the name Sammy Hagar—you know, the former frontman of the iconic band Van Halen? Also known as the Red Rocker, Sammy is the songwriter behind such hits like “I Can’t Drive 55,” “Right Now,” and “Why Can’t This Be Love?” However, music is just one of Sammy’s passions, and if you’ve spent any time in Cabo San Lucas, I bet you’re familiar with Sammy’s cantina Cabo Wabo and the assortment of tropical drinks on display. Thus, this month’s cocktail, the cheekily named “F’ Me Ginger,” is from Hagar’s newly released book, Sammy’s Cocktail Hits: 85 Personal Favorites from the Red Rocker, which I recently had the pleasure of co-authoring with him. Now, a little backstory about our featured cocktail. “Shiver me timbers!” is what pirates would holler when a large wave or cannonball smashed into their sailing ship, shuddering the hull and splintering the timbers into oblivion. Here, “F’ me ginger!” may just be what you’ll holler—pronounced “ginja” if you use your best sailor voice—when you take a sip of this delicious concoction. It’s the first drink Sammy developed that marries his pineapple and macadamia rums and further elevates them with fresh tropical juices. This fruity cocktail, with a snap of flavor thanks to the zing of freshly grated ginger, is perfect for those opening spring days on the boat or enjoyed all summer long on the dock while perched in your sun lounger.

72

F’ ME GINGER COCKTAIL Serves 1 1 ounce Sammy’s Beach Bar Pineapple Rum* 1⁄2 ounce Sammy’s Red Head Rum** 1⁄2 ounce triple sec (or Cointreau) 1⁄2 ounce fresh lime juice 1 ounce fresh orange juice 1 teaspoon finely grated fresh ginger root For the rim: Vanilla extract and ground cinnamon (or a mixture of ground cinnamon and powdered sugar) For garnish: Fresh mint sprig Dip the rim of a chilled martini glass in some vanilla extract, then roll the moistened rim in ground cinnamon. Set the glass aside. In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add the pineapple rum, Red Head Rum, triple sec, lime juice, orange juice, and ginger. Shake for at least 30 seconds to infuse the flavor of the ginger. Strain into the prepared martini glass and garnish with a fresh mint sprig. Note: For a lighter version, strain into a Collins glass filled with ice and top with soda water. *You can substitute Plantation Pineapple Rum here if you don’t have Sammy’s handy, or you can also muddle 1-1/2 ounces of white rum with 1 large slice fresh pineapple for the same effect, but strain before you pour. **This wonderful macadamia nut rum is worth sleuthing. You can find the Red Head Rum, as well as Sammy’s Beach Bar Pineapple Rum, at sammysbeachbarrum.com. Order both and enjoy all spring and summer long! A James Beard Award–winning cookbook and cocktail author with more than 40 published titles to his credit, Fraioli’s books have been featured on Ellen and the Food Network, and in Vogue, People, Forbes, the Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times. He resides in Bellevue, but keeps his sportfishing boat (a 28-foot Albin) in beautiful Anacortes, the gateway to his beloved San Juan Islands. Have a cookbook idea or project in mind? JA MES BOND KNEW “DI A MONDS A RE FOREVER,” BU T WH AT DOES TH AT REA LLY MEA N?

Simply explained, the word “diamonds” comes from the Greek for “unbreakable.” This most precious of gemstones has come to universally symbolize strength, commitment and everlasting love. Diamonds also have the honor of being the birthstone for the rainy month of April, and I personally cannot think of a better gem to mark the arrival of springtime in the Northwest. We invite you to visit soon and see our stunning array of diamond jewelry! —Steven Goldfarb
