The Magic of Secret Santas When I was a kid, Christmastime was when magic happened. Santa Claus was real, and he read our letters, ate our cookies, and shared the carrots we left out for the reindeer on Christmas Eve. He would even write us back, in choppy block letters that became Santa’s signature style in our household, thanking us for the goodies, complimenting us for being such good kids, and promising to make our wishes come true. Over time, adulting set in, and Santa is replaced with Secret Santas, all in a quest to keep the surprise of gift giving and receiving alive. As 2020 rolls into the holiday season, we’d like to present you with our annual Northwest Yachting Gift Guide (pages 45-55); our gift to all the active Santas out there, who are looking for that perfect infusion of magic and surprise to close out 2020 with a bang - and totally in style! You’ll also find a plethora of gorgeous yachts to choose from inside these pages, including the 2020 Hatteras M75 Panacera (page 32) offered by Worth Avenue Yachts, and the 2021 Riviera 505 SUV (page 34) offered by Emerald Pacific Yachts. As you 14

scroll through this issue, just imagine the yacht that catches your eye, tied up magically with a shiny red bow! Perhaps you’re looking for the perfect gift for someone who loves to travel. On pages 68 & 69, we introduce you to a new feature in Northwest Yachting, International Ports of Call, that will trigger ideas of exquisite places to visit on your own yacht or through a private yacht charter. This month, we take you to Bora Bora and the surrounding islands in the French Polynesia where you’ll find the private luxury superyacht PLAYPEN, a 142’ Richmond Yacht that is available for charter with your closest friends and family. I’m certain that this PLAYPEN would be the perfect gift under the tree. In this issue, you’ll find no shortage of Secret Santas to help you create a holiday that is full of magic and surprise. Now is a great time to let your dreams come true. See you in Bora Bora! Schelleen Rathkopf

Nautical News BY RANDY WOODS

Vessels Off Spanish Coast Told to Avoid Orca Whales After Collisions In early September, Spanish maritime authorities warned vessels sailing off the coast of Galicia to steer clear of migrating orca whales, following several collisions with the endangered marine mammals. A Spanish naval yacht, sailing near the northwest corner of Spain, suffered damage to its rudder following a collision with at least two whales. Another boat from France also reported minor damage after reportedly making physical contact with an orca on the same day. Both incidents occurred with hours of each other on Aug. 30 in the Rías Baixas. The Spanish yacht, Mirfak, lost part of its rudder after striking the orcas. Meanwhile, the French boat sustained scrapes on its hull that were consistent with damage typically seen after striking whales. Shortly after the incidents, a maritime rescue service in Spain issued an official warning to sailors in the region to give the whales a wide berth in order to avoid harming the environmentally threatened mammals and prevent additional damage to watercraft. Experts for a marine mammal research group Cemma, based in the town of Nigrán, said they were investigating the episodes. Cemma biologists said orcas, which can weigh up to six metric tons, are commonly spotted off Galicia in September during the whales’ annual migration to feed on schools of tuna in the Bay of Biscay. However, they added that collisions with boats are relatively rare. Cemma also said it was contacting other whale research teams in nearby Portugal to determine whether any other similar cases had occurred in their coastal waters.

Nautical News Bouncing Baby Orca Discovered in J Pod After several years of reporting declining numbers of southern resident killer whales in the Puget Sound region, the Center for Whale Research (CWR) shared some good news in September; another calf has been born into the community of endangered marine mammals. The mother, known by CWR’s nomenclature as J41, but called “Eclipse,” gave birth to the new orca on ember 24. This is the second calf born in the J Pod in September and also the second calf born to Eclipse. Her first calf, a male named J51, was born in 2015 when Eclipse was just ten years old. Talia Goodyear and Lea Vanderwiel, naturalists aboard an Orca Spirit Adventures vessel, said J41 may have given birth while their vessel was present in the waters off Victoria, British Columbia. CWR officials said they later encountered the whales to confirm the birth near Sheringham Point, B.C. “It was an emotional time as we processed what was happening in front of us,” Vanderwiel said. “It took a few minutes to realize what was actually happening, but then it

was pure excitement realizing that it was a birth and the baby was very alive and boisterous.” Marine biologists from CWR said they are continuing to evaluate the calf’s condition before it is assigned an alpha-numeric designation. They have reported, however, that the young animal seems healthy in his first days in the Salish Sea. On average, about 40% of newborn calves do not survive after the first few weeks.

Nautical News Nine Legends Inducted into National Sailing Hall of Fame Despite Covid-19 restrictions, the National Sailing Hall of Fame (NSHOF) inducted nine legendary sailors into its Hall of Fame in a virtual format on Sept. 12. This 10th annual ceremony, which had been scheduled for Newport, R.I., was conducted online so more people could attend safely. The individuals honored include: • James E. Buttersworth (1817 – 1894, London, UK) • Gordon “Sandy” Douglass (1904 –1992, Newark, NJ) • William K. Mattison (Born in 1928, Elkins, WV) • Robert B. Haines, Jr. (Born in 1954, San Diego, CA) • David B. Perry (Born in 1954, Southport, CT) • John P. Rousmaniere (Born in 1944, Louisville, KY) • Henry “Hoyle” Schweitzer (Born in1933, Los Angeles, CA) • Diane Schweitzer (Born in 1935, San Jose, CA)

20

A Lifetime Achievement Award was also bestowed on Briggs S. Cunningham, Jr. (1907 - 2003, West Palm Beach, FL).“These sailors reflect the breadth of sailing in our country, embody the commitment to excellence that few possess and provide inspiration for generations of sailors to come,” said Gus Carlson, president, NSHOF. Other Hall of Famers Vince Brun (2018), Peter Harken (2014), Stan Honey (2012), Bob Johnstone (2016) and Tom Whidden (2017) welcomed their peers to the hall. Also joining from home were fellow inductees Betsy Alison (2011), Bill Bentsen (2017), Malin Burnham (2016), Steve Colgate (2015) and JJ Fetter (2015). Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) provided congratulatory remarks, along with Cory Sertl, president of U.S. Sailing; Steve White, president and CEO of the Mystic Seaport Museum; Halsey Herreshoff, founder of the Herreshoff Marine Museum; Thomas Hubbell, president of Thistle Class. NSHOF board member and 2011 Hall of Fame inductee Gary Jobson moderated a live interview with three of the new inductees – Haines, Perry, and Rousmaniere – who recounted their career highlights. Jobson and Carlson also paid homage to Class of 2014 inductee Harry Anderson, as well as long-time board member Dayton Carr, who both passed away earlier this year. A moment of silence was shared to honor their memories. The Class of 2020 will be celebrated again at Newport on the weekend of September 10, 2021, alongside the Class of 2021. Details can be found at nshof.org/nominations.

Nautical News Effort to Buy Historic Lakebay Marina Fails After several months of negotiations, the Recreational Boating Association of Washington’s (RBAW) Marine Park Conservancy said its bid to purchase the historic Lakebay Marina on the Key Peninsula failed due to a sharp rise the final purchase price. “I’m incredibly saddened to report that the acquisition of Lakebay is not going to be able to move forward,” said Bob Wise, president of the RBAW Marine Park Conservancy board. The bid fell through after the current property owner, Mark Scott, raised the purchase price from $1.24 million to $3.135 million, a spike of more than 250%. The marina, listed on the Pierce County Register of Historic Places, has a vibrant history dating back 135 years to the days of the storied “Mosquito Fleet” that once plied Puget Sound’s waters. Over the years, Lakebay has been converted into an egg and poultry warehouse, a dance hall and community gathering place, and most recently as a marina. The marina, however, fell on hard times, leading to several building code violations and a near-default on its aquatic lands lease.

22

The RBAW Marine Park Conservancy sought to purchase the site and negotiated the acquisition of Lakebay in September 2019. The plan was to work with the state on upgrades to the marina and turn the property over to a state natural resource agency, such as Washington State Parks. The conservancy raised funds for the acquisition, including $350,000 from Pierce County and the state of Washington. Another $70,000 was raised from private sources. But when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, fundraising from outside sources became difficult, and the RBAW Marine Park Conservancy sought a one-year extension. The conservancy board offered Scott $50,000 in cash increases, but Scott’s counteroffer of a four-year extension came with the price increase of nearly $2 million. “We cannot in good conscience agree to those in terms – in the middle of a global pandemic, no less,” Wise said in late September. “We will be forced to let our purchase-and-sale agreement lapse.”

Seattle Yachts Becomes Official Nordic Tug Dealer Boat dealer and yacht brokerage firm Seattle Yachts officially became a dealer of Nordic Tugs, builder of trawler-style boats ranging from 26 to 54 feet in length. Seattle Yachts, which has offices in the Pacific Northwest, Southern California, and South Florida, now carries 16 new boat brands throughout the country, specializing in cruising boats, semi-displacement yachts, and luxury sailing cruisers. Cory Gracey, a Nordic Tugs brand manager with Seattle Yachts, said the company will represent Nordic Tugs in the Southeast and on the West Coast of the United States. Nordic Tugs, he said, “has an excellent reputation for building extremely high-quality cruisers that perform at a very fuel-efficient level and provide world-class accommodations with many customization options.” Today’s Nordic Tugs had its origin in the fuel crisis of the mid-1970s: the concept was to build a fuel-efficient vessel with the 24

attributes most important to the cruising boater. It proved to be one of those rare ideas not only appropriate for its time, but an idea whose virtues are more relevant today than ever. Launched during a period of chronic oil shortages, Nordic Tug founders Jerry Husted and Lynn Senour successfully combined the ruggedness and practicality of tugboats with the fuel-efficiency needed by boaters of the day. Seattle Yachts specializes in the sale of trawlers, sailboats, and cruising yachts including Alaskan Yachts, American Tug, Dehler, Endurance, Hampton, Hanse, Legacy, Moody, Nimbus, Nordic Tugs, Northern Marine, Northwest Yachts, Paragon Yachts, Regency and Tartan Yachts. The Mediterranean-style fly bridge, also known as the Sky Lounge, offers the only operating station on board. Here, two leather captain chairs, combined with additional seating areas, make operating the yacht a social experience while underway. The main deck below the Sky Lounge features the stylish salon, full galley, and dining area. The full-beam master suite contains a king-size bed, wonderful hull side windows, a walk-in, cedar-lined closet, and an astonishing 6’7” of overhead space. Her quality is reflected fit to finish in all entertainment areas, including the bow that features a 6’9” sun pad perfect for lounging and a covered aft deck if you’re ready to take a break from the elements. It also features an outdoor freshwater shower to rinse off before heading inside. Engine rooms should be spacious, and the M75 Panacera does not disappoint. This space includes wonderful overhead storage racks to keep gear organized and available, and features an intuitive engine layout that allows for easy access and service. 2007 MARSTROM COMPOSITE EXTREME 40 Unlike most Broker’s Best items, which tend to focus on the cruising lifestyle and comfortable interiors, we are focusing this month on pure speed – namely the Marstrom Composite Extreme 40 racing catamaran. Designed by famed French sailor Yves Loday, gold medalist in the Tornado Class yachting race at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, this futuristic racer was built in 2007 and overhauled with a new 62-foot, two-piece carbon mast and fitted with Dyneema rigging in 2017. Named Shadow X, this 40-foot composite-hulled catamaran hails from Sausalito, California, and has reached speeds of up to 35 knots on flat water in around 20 to 25 knots of wind. It can also fly a hull in as little as 8 knots, so it’s an exciting spectacle to behold. Weighing in at 1,350 kilograms (about 2,976 pounds), the mid-sized sport cat has a carbon-fiber superstructure and deck material and is handled by a typical crew of four. 36

The Extreme 40, with a displacement of 1,250 kilograms (about 2,755 pounds), is the largest model built entirely in an autoclave from prepreg carbon fiber and a Nomex core. Although it is strong enough to handle the toughest coastal and inshore conditions, the boat is not designed to cross oceans, so it can be disassembled and transported in a 40-foot shipping container on its own road trailer and put back together again in about six hours. The precise shape of the hulls was produced at one of the most prestigious aeronautical and race car facilities in France. The molds were produced by Heol Composites in Treffléan, France, one of the leading producers of high-tech boat construction. Sweden-based Marstrom Composites AB then shaped the finished hulls. Shadow X is equipped with a Holmatro hydraulic system and Harken winches. It has a mainsail measuring 75 square meters, a gennaker of 78 square meters, and a 25-square-meter jib. The boat was also given new bottom paint and halyards in 2019.

2003 DEVLIN SOCKEYE 45 MOTOR TRAWLER This 2003 Devlin 45 Sockeye is as good looking as she is sturdy. Built by Devlin Designing Boatbuilders in Olympia, Washington, with wood, fiberglass, and epoxy – a proven method known as “stitch and glue” – the Sockeye has a surprising amount of room with five sleeping berths. Powered by a John Deere 4045 diesel engine with 145hp, the trawler is also economical, with an 850-gallon fuel capacity for long-range travel. The boat has been very well-maintained for the past 17 years, and equipment includes two Dickinson Newport propane-fired furnaces, electric heaters and reverse-cycle heat/air, plus a davit and a West Marine dinghy. The classic tug-style, composite-material, monocoque design is lightweight, strong, and retains the thermal and sound insulation of wooden construction. Seams are taped with fiberglass cloth and epoxy to make the interiors warm and comfortable. Accommodations include two double berths and one cabin with a single berth. The two heads are equipped with Vac flush toilets and two showers. The stateroom with a queensized berth is accessible through a classic butterfly hatch overhead.

Specs & Info LOA 45’ Beam 12’10” Draft 4’7”

Entry from the cockpit into the salon is via sliding door, where visitor will find a warm nautical interior. A dinette with hi/lo table is to port, and is convertible to a double berth. A long galley to starboard includes a double sink, an Isotherm refrigerator, a separate Isotherm freezer, a Broadwater 4-burner marine stove and a Contoure microwave oven. Take three steps up to the pilothouse to find a pedestal captain’s seat and a commanding layout of navigational equipment and operational instrumentation, such as a SIMRAD AP20 Autopilot, an IS15 wind gauge and numeric display, and Furuno NavNet 3D multifunction displays. A pilot berth is to port, and a chart table with storage is aft of the helm chair. Access around the exterior is easy, with elevated side decks. A very large lazarette compartment is tucked into the fantail with a considerable volume of storage for various equipment. In 2016, the owners gave the Sockeye a new exterior using Awlgrip paint. The price of the Sockeye includes access to a boathouse in Shelton, Washington.

Dear Northwest Yachting, Just wanted to spread the kudos around and say, “WOW.” Love the new look. It’s more than coffee table presentable. Again, “WOW.” Hal Knighten, Sequim Dear Northwest Yachting, I was very pleased with the results of the revamped NWY. Despite our ad space being reduced considerably, the print quality is much improved, making for a beautiful end product. Lisa Helker, Waterline Boats Dear Schelleen, I gotta tell you, the new issue looks fabulous! Wow! What a makeover. The new size is so much easier to handle. The “experience” with the paper is at a whole different level, and the images are crisp and clean. Congratulations on hitting a home run! Peter Nelson, MY SAIL Dear Northwest Yachting, Several of our staff were commenting on how much they like the new format. Not only is the size much better, they also “love” the quality of the page material. Well done by all on your end! You did a great job! Lee Chapoton, NW Explorations Hi Schelleen, This month’s issue of Northwest Yachting has a whole new amazing, classy, and sexy look! So proud of you and all your hard work, and all those that helped along the way. You help represent the Northwest perfectly! Cheers! Jennifer Mathis, Tacoma Dear Schelleen, Just wanted you to know you’re doing a great job with the magazine. The effort is appreciated. Ben Bottoms, Bottoms Boat Diving

Dear Northwest Yachting Readers,

2021 LAGOON 42 #587: SAVE $18,000

I’m looking for some help identifying where this photograph was taken. My Dad's uncle, Captain Herbert Conrad Fridley Jr. was in the Merchant Marines, and spent a portion of his career onboard the SS President Hoover. Eventually, he was commandeered into WW2, where he disappeared and was never heard from again. He lived in both Santa Cruz and San Francisco, and was involved with lumber transports from Portland in addition to some passenger jobs. I found some old negatives from his stuff, think this photo may have been taken in the Columbia River, but are not sure. Does anyone recognize where this photo may have been taken? Jackie Marshall, Seattle

Dear Northwest Yachting, Thank you Schelleen for all the great news updates! It sounds like you’re on the way to having one of the real great magazines of all times! Dave Boynton, Boynton Yachts Hello Schelleen, The magazine looks fantastic. Tracy Hess Burgess, Outer Reef Yachts

YACHT-MASTER II Inspired by the heritage that has bound Rolex to the sailing world since the 1950s, the Yacht-Master II is a regatta chronograph built for yachting. The sold-platinum bezel acts as the key to the programmable countdown, allowing it to be set and synchronized to the sequence of race start times. The 44mm Yacht-Master II, adorned in pure white gold, is waterproof to 100 meters and now features a triangular hour marker at 12 o’clock and a rectangular hour marker at 6 o’clock for more intuitive reading of the dial. Available at Alvin Goldfarb Jeweler. $48,150 / agjeweler.com ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL 31 Rolex’s classic feminine watch, the Oyster Perpetual 31, has been a byword for style and accurate timekeeping for years. This year, the Perpetual mode includes the caliber 2232 self-winding movement feature and a silicon Syloxi hairspring for

unprecedented accuracy. The robust and comfortable Oyster metal bracelet, with its broad, three-piece links first introduced in the 1930s, is fitted with an Oysterclasp. HERLEWING MATTRESS The word “herlewing” means “waking up” in the Afrikaans language, so it’s no surprise that the Herlewing mattress from Hästens is the most luxurious way to arise each morning. Made with three interacting spring systems, plus 35 hand-created layers of natural materials, the Herlewing is built with springs that react individually to pressure, so two people can lie on the mattress in their own sphere without their movements disturbing each other. Not yet convinced? To seal the deal, Canadian rap star Drake owns a Hästens, making it all the rage these days. Available at Bedrooms and More. $27,790 / bedroomsandmore.com A SEE-THROUGH KAYAK-CANOE FOR TWO This two-person, canoe-kayak hybrid has a transparent polymer hull that offers paddlers of all levels an underwater vista unavailable in conventional boats. the craft displaces a greater amount of water for more surface stability, giving paddlers better balance. Adjustable ergonomic seats allow paddlers to personalize leg room for comfort. The craft also includes seatback storage, two 86” aluminum shaft/fiberglass paddles, and two flotation-device pouches. $2,500 / hammacher.com FOLD-UP, STAND-UP PADDLEBOARD/KAYAK Manufactured using recycled, eco-friendly materials, this ingenious design allows you to convert a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) into a kayak in a snap. Boating with Missy By Melissa Gervais

Top Dressing Since my first real job in the mid-eighties, I have always worked in an office. Back then, it was all about the power suit, the bigger the shoulders, the better. I remember my first significant purchase was an Oleg Cassini navy wool suit from Filene’s Basement in Boston. I saved it for special meetings and woke up extra early to get ready with the big hair, long red nails, full makeup, and the tallest heels I could find. That was my routine for years. When I started working in the marine industry, my routine changed drastically and my suits lost their power. I started wearing comfortable shoes, a ponytail, and logo shirts. Every once in a while, I would wear a skirt with heels, and inevitably, it would be the day someone called in sick and I would have to count inventory in the warehouse or load gear into a client’s truck. Jump ahead to 2020, and I find myself getting only half-dressed. It’s the new mullet, but instead of front and back, it is business on the top and party on the bottom. I saw friends posting pictures of this phenomenon online, but I wasn’t going public. This was a secret between me and my canine coworkers. Then, Anna Wintour tweeted a picture sitting at her desk wearing sweatpants. Excuse me, joggers. It immediately brought to mind the Seinfeld episode when George shows up at the apartment, and Jerry says, “You know the message you’re sending out to the world with these sweatpants? You’re telling the world, I give up. I can’t compete in normal society. I’m miserable, so I might as well be comfortable.” This got me thinking, “Had the pandemic turned a fashion faux-pas into a fashion must-have?” 56

I think I acquired my first pair of sweats as a gift-with-purchase when I signed up for a gym membership. Ironically, I didn’t use either. However, years later, I realized that they were perfect for crawling around the engine room and cleaning the boat. They were inexpensive, stretchy, and didn’t catch on boat parts. Maybe it was time to reinvest? I thought I would look online and see if I could find some nice ones for the office. If the editor of Vogue can wear them, why can’t I? I googled WFH (work from home) joggers. Very quickly, I realized that fashion designers were cashing in on the fact that we were spending more time at home and had created entire collections to capitalize on our new way of life. Loungewear was now a wardrobe investment piece, and I wasn’t sure if I could “add to cart.” The following week, I was getting ready for my regular Zoom meeting with the office. I had dried my hair, threw on some mascara, lip gloss, and a beautiful silk blouse. As people were popping up on the screen, I looked down at my WFH joggers and noticed that they had a few small holes from battery acid and an artistic splattering of Interlux blue bottom paint. No one had to know. My dogs will never have a Twitter account. Missy grew up boating with her family in the Gulf Islands. She works for a yacht services company based in Vancouver, B.C. and boats most weekends from April to October. A self-proclaimed weekend warrior, she enjoys blogging about everything cool for women who boat at missygoesboating.com.

Tight Lines By Mark Yuasa

All Smiles for Winter Living in the Pacific Northwest offers a chance to experience many outdoor activities unlike no other in the late fall and winter. Sure, dodging the wind and pelting rain is a way of life, but the rewards of pulling up a pot loaded with sweet Dungeness crab or a hard-fighting chum salmon are one-of-a-kind treats that’ll surely put a smile on your face. Several Puget Sound areas have reopened daily through Dec. 31 for winter Dungeness crab fishing including the Strait of Juan de Fuca (Marine Catch Areas 4 east of Bonilla-Tatoosh line, 5 and 6); San Juan Islands (7); northern Puget Sound (9) and Hood Canal north of Ayock Point (12). “The winter season is a good time for people to get out and pursue more crabbing,” said Don Velasquez, a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) biologist. Crab pots may be set or pulled from a vessel from one hour before official sunrise through one hour after official sunset. Daily limit is five Dungeness crabs (males only) in hard-shell condition with a minimum carapace width of 6 1/4 inches. Crabbers may keep six red rock crabs daily of either sex with a minimum carapace width of 5 inches, and six Tanner crabs daily of either sex with a minimum carapace of 4 1/2 inches. Anglers must possess a winter crab catch card. Last Chance Salmon Opportunities Every dog has its day, and soon enough anglers will be howling with joy for what should be a fairly good return of dog salmon to local waterways. Chum, known as dog salmon for their ferocious-looking jawline at spawning time, are one of the hardest-fighting fish when hooked, and they’re the last of all migrating salmon returns. The combined fall chum forecast is 874,307 for Puget Sound and Hood Canal, up from 642,740 in 2019. In Hood Canal alone, it is a decent 471,810, which is on par to the recent historical annual average. “We didn’t see much of a decline in the Hood Canal forecast where we’re getting a little better hatchery return, so I would target 58

areas around Hoodsport,” said Mickey Agha, a WDFW biologist. One of the most popular places now through Thanksgiving is along the eastern shoreline just off Highway 101 from Eldon to Potlatch State Park. Hood Canal is open for salmon (Chinook is catch and release only) through Nov. 30. Central Puget Sound from the Apple Tree-Edwards Point line south to northern tip of Vashon Island is open for coho and chum through Nov. 15. Southern Puget Sound, south of the Narrows Bridge, is open year-round for salmon (catch and release wild coho and Chinook). Expect some glory moments for chum near the Kennedy Creek estuary in Totten Inlet; Johns Creek estuary in Oakland Bay; Chico Creek estuary in Dyes Inlet; Hammersley Inlet; North Bay near Allyn; and Perry Creek in Eld Inlet. One of the more proven tactics is simply drifting with the current and casting a float or bobber with a small firecracker-sized, cut-plug herring on a weighted leader to tandem 1/0 size salmon hooks. Others will toss chartreuse or pink colored spinners, jigs, and spoons to get their attention. Fly anglers should use a 9 to 12 weight fly rod with floating line and a strike indicator attached to a heavy-weighted chartreuse, pink or purple Marabou or Zonker fly. You can catch them using a sinking tip with a purple or pink Egg Sucking Leech. Also try a shrimp, clouser, popper, and flash-fly in pink, chartreuse, fuchsia, lime green, or purple colored patterns. Good luck and I’ll see you on the water! Mark Yuasa is a longtime fishing and outdoors writer. Born and raised in Seattle, and a U of W alum, Mark joined the Northwest Marine Trade Association in 2017 as the Director of Grow Boating Programs after 33 years at The Seattle Times. He also volunteers with the BSA Chief Seattle Council and National Order of the Arrow organizations, and enjoys fishing for salmon and other fish species in local waterways.

Seattle City Council Reduces Harbor Patrol Right before our very eyes, 28 uniformed and commissioned members of the Seattle Harbor Patrol are patrolling 147.52 miles of freshwater and 53.38 miles of saltwater shoreline for a grand total of 200.90 miles. Stationed near Gas Works Park, these officers ensure that Seattle’s waters are safe from boating-under-the-influence operators. What’s more, they are typically the first responders to distressed boaters and swimmers, and also first in line to keep trespassers from hanging around where they shouldn’t be. What’s not to love? Unfortunately, the Seattle City Council doesn’t see it that way. They have given this sector of the Seattle Police Department an unwanted haircut by not filling two open positions that are key to the Seattle Harbor Patrol efforts. Seattle City Councilmember Alex Pedersen, representing District 6 (Wallingford, University of Washington area and its environs), did his best to bring some sanity to this Council. Losing these two open positions is not the stuff that makes for a crisis, but Seattle City Council seems to be taking it a step further by moving the Seattle Harbor Patrol under the Seattle Fire umbrella. “What’s the big deal,” you might be asking? As it stands, the Seattle Fire Department cannot arrest people for drunk boating, and this move could significantly impact boater safety. In response, my employer, the Northwest Marine Trade Association (NMTA), is teaming up with the Recreational Boating Association of Washington, the Lake Union Liveaboard Association, and the Floating Homes Association to make the rounds with Seattle City Council. Our goal is to make them aware of what these changes might mean to the boating public. Stay tuned on this one, as it’s just starting to heat up. PFD Debate State Parks and Rep. Cindy Ryu (Democrat-Shoreline) are working on a bill for the next legislative session to require personal floatation 60

Seattle City Council Reduces Harbor Patrol

devices (PFDs) be worn on all human-powered craft, including kayaks, canoes, and standup paddleboards (SUPs). The idea is to adopt the same mindset that we saw around compulsory seatbelt laws. Looking ahead, I would not be surprised to see a bill introduced that requires a life jacket be worn on all vessels that are 21 feet or less. Keep in mind that bills get introduced all the time for all sorts of reasons. Last year, 3,683 bills were introduced in Washington State, but only 769 of those made it through the process to become a law signed by the Governor. All it takes to start the legislative dance is an idea that has been co-signed by a lawmaker, and then it becomes part of that 3,683 number. Taxing Visiting Superyachts Also coming up in the next session, there’s some momentum building to improve boating access for yachts looking to visit the state of Washington. Currently, if a skipper and crew bring a $1 million yacht to Washington for a two-week vacation, they are taxed on the value of their yacht; in the case of the million-dollar yacht, that would be $100,000. You are reading this correctly. I’m working with the Port of Port Angeles, Superyacht Northwest, which is the superyacht committee of the Northwest Marine Trade Association (NMTA), to upend this super strange law and replace it with a tax on the cost of the vacation and not the vessel’s value. Stay tuned! Peter Schrappen is Northwest Marine Trade Association’s Government Affairs Director and the Clean Boating Foundation’s Executive Director. Additionally, he serves on the boards of the Boating Safety Advisory Council, Washington Boating Alliance, and U.S. Superyacht Association.

New Training Options for Experienced Boaters As prime season for Pacific Northwest cruising draws to a close, I hope you’re reflecting on your great summertime boating adventures! I certainly am, having logged 100 days and 65 nights on our waters since June. You may be asking, “What next? How can I develop my skills for bigger cruising adventures?” Here are just a few ideas: Marine Weather Recently, I assisted David Wilkinson, an American Sailing Association Marine Weather Instructor, with a pilot program offering a two-day Marine Weather Certification Course via Zoom. It went well and was comparable to a classroom session, with students being able to enjoy the lectures, share favorite weather websites, and ask questions from home. The class was offered through Seattle Sailing Club (info@seattlesailing.com) and will be available again via Zoom this winter. David will also be teaching a one-day Marine WX workshop for Washington Sea Grant (wsg.washington.edu) on November 14th that covers multiple weather topics, including determining the path and speed of squalls and how pressure gradients affect wind in Washington waters. There are no prerequisites and classes are open to anyone interested in expanding their knowledge base. Boat Maintenance To learn more about boat maintenance, I recommend the Marine Maintenance Technology course at Skagit Valley College and the Continuing Education programs at Seattle Maritime Academy. Both programs are responding to COVID-19 by offering online instruction. If you’re thinking of DIY updates on your boat, I suggest that you follow the SVC Cruisers College blog. Here, you’ll find many interesting videos posted by the group who have been refitting the 62

offshore sailboat, King’s Pride. They are also posting a comprehensive “to do” list, as well as a detailed list of expenditures. Check out their YouTube channel, SVC Skallywags. I especially enjoy the Offshore Sailboat Refit and Tech Tips playlists! Offshore Cruising Training For decades, John and Amanda Swan Neal have been offering hands-on, liveaboard training onboard their Hallberg-Rassy 46, Mahina Tiare. They are famous in the Bluewater cruising community, having launched countless cruising students around the globe. Due to COVID-19, their plan to cruise in the South Pacific is on hold while their boat sits in New Zealand. Being a good cruiser is knowing how to turn lemons into lemonade. Lemonade experts John and Amanda have this nailed and have started to teach their offshore cruising courses in the Pacific Northwest. I was lucky enough to join them for their pilot course on board a 45’ cruiser that headed out to the Straits of Juan de Fuca into the Pacific Ocean for the training. It was an excellent experience as those who attended received hands-on experience using a variety of cruising skills, from nighttime watch standing to sail repair using a Sailrite machine. John and Amanda plan to stay in the Pacific Northwest through 2021, and will run nine-day teaching expeditions on a Garcia Exploration 45 from the San Juan Sailing fleet. Now is the perfect time to chart a course for developing your own offshore cruising skills! Seattle-based Margaret Pommert is a licensed 100-ton captain, certified sail, power and navigation instructor, leader in the woman boater community, safety at sea advocate.

Ask Nigel By Nigel Barron

Bottom Paint With the arrival of winter, a common project for boat owners is hauling out the boat for a fresh coat of bottom paint. In the Pacific Northwest, where we rarely see a winter with a deep freeze that lasts longer than a few days, we can accomplish this maintenance year round. We may need to build some extra tape gutters, or let the paint dry a little longer than normal before removing the stands for the pads, but it is possible. While things have changed a bit in the world of paint, the general idea that you need antifouling properties in the paint has not. Copper is still an essential ingredient, but many brands are using copper more effectively and making the paints safer for our waters. The first step is to get on someone’s schedule! Going into winter, most boatyards are booked out three to four weeks, so planning ahead is key. As the season wears on, boatyards get super busy, so it’s also a great time to think about any other projects you can do while the boat is hauled out. Some common tasks include painting the underwater metal, checking the running gear, or changing out the anodes. Is it time to service the outdrives or the sail drive? Think about all those things that you can get done now, which will help you get back on the water come spring. The second step is to find out what type of paint you have on your boat, as knowing this helps the boatyard deliver an accurate quote. You’d be surprised how often boat owners only know the color (it’s probably black)! You don’t have to know the exact type of paint— just know whether you have hard or ablative paint. If you have ablative paint, a diver won’t clean your bottom. You will find that boatyards will often price bottom paint as a 64

package that includes the haulout, pressure wash, environmental fees, tarp fees, paint and labor. The big question is always, “one coat or two?” Hard paint typically gets one coat, while ablative gets two. There may be some variables in the estimates, as the boatyard may not know if additional preparations are required until the boat is hauled out and they can get a good look at the current condition. Some conditions might be large sections of paint with adherence issues or excessive amounts of hard or soft growth on the bottom that can’t be handled with a standard pressure washer. After you have determined if you have a hard or ablative paint, ask the boatyard about their brand recommendations. Certain brands work better in fresh or salt water and some paints may not work at all for boats that live on a trailer for half the year. So, it’s really important to discuss these conditions with the boatyard so that you get the right type of paint for your boat. Once your appointment is confirmed, plan ahead and make sure you’re on time to the appointed haul-out time. The bottom paint procedure takes around five to seven working days, and please let the boatyard know in advance if you’d like to see the boat before she’s returned to the water! Good luck! Nigel Barron was born in England and developed his sea legs at an early age. He is currently the Project Manager at CSR Marine in Seattle where he has worked for 15 years as a rigger, then an installer, and now in his current role. PALACE KITCHEN GOAT CHEESE FONDUE WITH TOASTED RUSTIC BREAD from Tom’s Big Dinners (Morrow, 2003) Makes 6 to 8 servings 1 cup whipping cream 11 ounces soft, fresh goat cheese, broken into chunks 1 tablespoon sliced chives ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Toasted rustic bread (see note) 3 Honeycrisp apples, cored but not peeled, and cut into wedges Slowly warm the whipping cream in a heavy-bottomed saucepan until hot but not boiling. Gradually add the goat cheese and whisk until smooth. The thickness of the fondue may vary due to the particular brand of fresh goat cheese that you use. It should be thick enough to coat a spoon. If too thin, add a little more cheese. If too thick, add a little more cream. Remove the fondue from the heat and stir in the chives and black pepper.

Pour the warm fondue into a fondue pot and serve with chunks of toasted rustic bread and apple wedges for dunking. Pass guests regular or fondue forks. For toasted bread: Fire up the grill. Brush 8 slices of rustic bread, sliced 1-inch thick, generously with olive oil on both sides, then grill them, turning until golden brown, a few minutes per side. Remove bread from the heat and use a serrated knife to cut into bite-size chunks. If you prefer, you can brush the bread with oil and brown under a broiler, turning as needed until golden brown on both sides. Exotic days and romantic nights can fill your soul and tingle your senses while cruising these waters. Bora Bora is a 12-square-mile island group in the western part of the Society Islands of French Polynesia in the Pacific Ocean. Other islands of the Society Islands include Moorea, Taha’a, Maupiti, and many more. Each island is surrounded by bright blue lagoons and interiors filled with lush green vegetation. The quintessential tropical getaway for your yachting excursion, Bora Bora and surrounding islands offer beauty on the water and onshore. The main island of Bora Bora is a marvelous, fertile world of sundrenched landscapes surrounded by bright blue lagoons and a lively barrier reef. The center of the island is home to the remnants of an extinct volcano that now forms the two peaks of Mount Pahia and 68

Mount Otemanu, which reaches 2,385 feet. The island is celebrated for its lush tropical slopes and valleys of Mount Otomanu. Guests to the island can hike up to the overlooks on Mount Otemanu or visit the villages of Anau or Vaitape to shop for local artisan products. Palm-covered motu, the Polynesian word for small reef islets, line Bora Bora’s lagoon like a fine necklace. In ancient times, Bora Bora was called “Pora pora mai te pora”, meaning created by the gods in the local Tahitian dialect. The smell of the Tahitian flower tiare lingers in the air, relaxing your soul and the hibiscus paint brilliant color on the verdant scenery. In Bora Bora, delicate white sand beaches give way to cerulean waters filled with radiant fish, coral gardens, and giant manta rays. Small, thatched-roof villas, that are part of luxury resorts, stretch out from coastal shores. The overwater bungalows and opulent spa resorts add to the already calming ambiance. If relaxation is more your pace, immerse yourself in the some of the legendary spas and gourmet restaurants the island has to offer. Discover the island’s unique shopping experience, including local and international art,

Luxury superyacht PLAYPEN moored near Bora Bora. PLAYPEN is a 142’ Richmond Yacht built in 2007, (refit in 2018) and is currently for sale with Worth Avenue Yachts. With six staterooms, she sleeps 12, and is the perfect yacht to take exploring with your closest friends and family.

Tahitian cultured pearls, perfumes, monoi oil, and precious wood handcrafts. Cruise your yacht near Matira Point for sunset cocktails. There are so many things to do in this perfect paradise. If you are into excitement, navigate the lagoon in your yacht’s dinghy or charter an outrigger canoe, jet ski or stand-up paddle board to catch a dramatic sunset. If exploration is on your list, enlist a local Tahitian for a guided, off-road 4WD excursion, rent a motorbike to explore the island, or hike the some of the mountain’s panoramic overlooks. For a day of discovery, explore the seemingly neon-lit lagoon waters, perfect for snorkeling and diving. The glowing waters are created by the interplay of the intense light, crystalline water, and bright-white sand. The Tahitian ocean is a truly idyllic place for scuba divers. The warm waters team with marine life, from flirty clownfish to elegant rays to dramatic sharks. In the fall, whale songs from migrating humpbacks fill the sea with haunting melodies. The water is generally so clear it’s more like liquid air. The ocean is calm, almost always current free, and the lush reefs are a breathtaking kaleidoscope of color and movement. Bora Bora offers the most diverse dive centers in all of Tahiti.

Favorite dive sites around Bora Bora include Anau for every level of diver wishing to experience manta rays. Tapu is a popular dive site on the outer slope, especially for advanced divers willing to swim with massive lemon sharks. Another popular dive site is Muri Muri, also called White Valley, home to a large garden eel colony and blacktip sharks in the shallower areas. Bora Bora is currently open to visitors from all countries. To learn more about how to safely travel to the islands of Tahiti, visit tahititourisme.com. Ports of Call BY DEANE HISLOP

Blake Island Marine State Park Nestled between Bainbridge and Vashon Islands, and approximately seven miles from Seattle’s waterfront, Blake Island’s small harbor is within easy cruising distance from the Puget Sound metropolitan areas. During the boating season, the park is popular with boaters, with boats rafting up on the 1,500 feet of dock or at one of the 24 mooring buoys surrounding the island. In the off-season, the island reclaims its anonymity. Puget Sound boaters seem to get amnesia, forgetting that the 1,127-acre island is within easy reach for weekend or day cruises throughout the year in most conditions. A sense of remoteness, usually reserved for more distant destinations, returns to the island and allows one to escape from the hassles and humdrum of everyday life on the mainland. A small-craft basin with floats and pumpout are tucked in behind a rock breakwater on the northeast point of the island. The entrance is at the north end of the breakwater between green and red day markers on the pilings that mark the channel. Stray outside the markers and it’s far too easy to run aground. The floats inside the breakwater are available on a first-come, first-served basis and offer 30-amp power. A self-service pay station is on shore at the head of the ramps, where fees of $.70/ft. and $6/night power are collected. South of the dock ramp, there are restroom facilities with showers open year-round and two covered picnic shelters that include fire pits and picnic tables. All garbage must be packed out. The mooring buoys encompassing the island are available for boats less than 45 feet in length. A buoy moorage fee of $15/night is collected year-round at self-registration pay stations ashore. Now a Washington State Marine Park, Blake Island was originally an ancestral campground of the Suquamish and Duwamish Indian Tribes who took advantage of the local resources. It is also believed to be the birthplace of Chief Seattle (See-ahth), for whom the City of Seattle was named. In 1958, Washington State Land Commissioner 70

Bret Cole discovered development plans to turn the island into an exclusive housing project with a luxury resort, hotel, and marina. Cole believed strongly that the island should be preserved for the general public and arranged for its sale to the State of Washington in 1959. The property became a state park in October 1974, and the rock jetty and boat basin were constructed in 1975. The boat basin and Tillicum Village longhouse serve as the hub to the otherwise undeveloped island. From May through September, Argosy Cruises offers a tour to Blake Island that includes a Northwest Coastal Native salmon bake and stage show. In 2009, Argosy Cruises bought the Tillicum Village, built for the 1962 World’s Fair, from the Hewitt family. The village occupies about 5 acres within the park that are leased from the state. Blake Island provides magnificent views of the snow-capped Mount Rainier and Olympic Mountains. On a clear night, the view of the Seattle skyline is absolutely spectacular! Deer graze on the grounds at the top of the ramp, and with so few visitors to the island during the off-season, it’s not uncommon to encounter many of the resident wildlife while walking the five miles of beach or hiking the 15.5 miles of trails.

Support local and regional programs for children and young adults through the charitable donation of your boat. The Pacific Marine Foundation is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization funding regional programs such as Northwest Youth Services, Sea Scouts, Boys & Girls Clubs, and local public school education foundations. A substantial tax savings and the possibility of a partial cash sale makes a charitable donation a very attractive alternative for any owner who is considering selling their well-found power or sailing yacht. PSSC Highlights On October 10th and 11th, Seattle’s Shilshole Bay Marina welcomed boats and sailors for what felt like the first time in months since COVID hit. The congregation gathered for two days of short course competition to wrap up summer racing at Corinthian Yacht Club of Seattle, and they intended to celebrate in style. The 2020 Puget Sound Sailing Championships, commonly known as PSSC, is usually a summer highlight for many racers after months of weeknight and weekend racing that allow teams to get fully polished up and dialed in. This summer brought many challenges with the cancellations of so many favorite regattas, and PSSC was one of the few full-fledged regattas hosted by Corinthian Yacht Club left standing. Normally split into two weekends, one for dinghies and one for keel boats, this year’s event was truncated into one single weekend with over 109 boats spread across a dozen fleets. Fleets were split between two courses, one reserved for dinghies just off the breakwater and one designated for keelboats further to the north. Eighty-five dinghies tip the scales and represent one of the best attended small boat regattas in recent memory. A large contingent of the fleet was made up of the ever-expanding RS Aero group, as well as a solid turnout for the Laser Radial fleet. Additionally, a huge number of junior sailors, including race teams from neighboring clubs, took to the water on Corinthian Yacht Clubs club fleet of Vanguard 15s, Optimists, and Lasers. To the north, one design keel boat fleets comprised of Melges 24, J24, J80, J105, and a scattering of 30- to 40-foot boats rounded out the regatta racing PHRF handicap. A chaotic wind forecast was in the cards for this event, with strong offshore flow that came in throughout the weekend. The winds on Saturday brought a 20-knot northerly and a 20-knot southerly, making it anyone’s guess what would happen on a racecourse that sat firmly in the middle of the convergence zone. Adding to the drama, Corinthian Yacht Club’s derelict mark set boat, had a center console completely break away from the deck while motoring to set the course, which resulted in the boat capsizing. Fortunately, the driver was carrying a knife and was able to cut himself away from the lines entangling him underwater when the boat capsized. Despite spending 20 minutes in the water, everyone involved came away with their lives. It was a challenging day on the water for all parties with shifting breeze making for tough tactical calls and crowded start lines. Midway through the day, the wind filled suddenly from the north, resulting in an abandonment of a race while the race committee reset the course. While the rain somehow stayed away on Saturday, Sunday was not so lucky as blustery conditions and heavy rain squalls hammered the race course throughout the day. At the end of the day, it would be local hero Dalton Bergan taking home the win in the 22 boat RS Aero fleet, while Sammy Farkas took home the win in the Lasar Radial fleet. On the keel boat scoreboard, John Aitchison and the crew of Moose Unknown came out on top of the 11 boats in the J105 fleet. Richard Demmler and crew of Tastes Like Chicken took the win in the J80s, and the J24 winner was Jakob Lichtenberg with his team on Hair of the Dog. For the full results, visit the Corinthian Yacht Club website at cycseattle.org. 75
