MARITIME MISSIVES [ BEHIND THE SCENES ]

Hangin’ with the Kraken Editor’s Note: On a surprisingly warm September day, we had the pleasure of meeting and photographing three of the new Seattle Kraken players for this month’s fall fashion feature (page 48). In turn, we were introduced to player Jared McCann’s adorable corgi puppy, Cheddar, who stopped by the shoot and turned out to be just as photogenic as his owner. (Although Pearl is still a little cheesed she wasn’t invited, as well!)

[ FROM THE ISSUE ]

That’s a Beautiful Boat Editor’s Note: Featured in our September issue, the vintage 1963 50-foot Kettenburg owned by local architect Steve Hoedemaker sure got a lotta love on social, with over a thousand hearts tapped on the @hoedemakerpfeiffer and @nwyacthing Insta posts on the story. Fun fact: The amazing sailboat was first owned by Hoedemaker’s father and now the son sails her today!

[ SWEET SNAP! ]

Sail Away Editor’s Note: Sent to my inbox on one of those first gloomy, drippy fall days, this dreamy photo by local photographer Judy McClintock-Hayes sure took me away; I can practically feel the sun on my back and gentle roll of the swell. [ PRESERVING HISTORY ]

From the Cover: Northwest Seaport Looks to Revamp Historic Fleet Moored near the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) on the southern shores of Lake Union in Seattle, several ships loom large: The historic fleet of vessels that appear in this month’s fall fashion story on pages 48-57. Owned and lovingly maintained by Northwest Seaport, the collection includes the Lightship No. 83 known as SWIFTSURE, the tugboat Arthur Foss, and the halibut schooner F/V Tordenskjold. In addition to the educational programs offered by the nonprofit organization that introduces young people to careers in the maritime industry, Northwest Seaport also frequently opens up the vessels for public viewing during pre-arranged tours, special events, for overnight boat stays, and their extremely popular seasonal Tugboat Happy Hours. These efforts raise awareness and funds for its goal to burnish these relics of Seattle maritime history to their original glory, efforts such as: • Replete with a stunning red hull, the SWIFTSURE, built in 1904, is the oldest Lightship in the United States and a designated National Historic Landmark. So far, the lightship restoration project is about halfway complete, but the most immediate need for the 189-foot “floating lighthouse” is to replace the plastic cover protecting the ship from the elements, according to vessel manager and Seaport nautical archaeologist Saxon T. Bisbee. Additional funding is also needed for materials and labor to re-caulk and seal the boat’s deck seams.

• The Seaport’s oldest vessel, the Arthur Foss, built in 1889, was used to tow sailing ships across the Columbia Bar to Astoria and Portland in Oregon, as well as other ships to Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897-98. It now needs extensive restoration to become operational again, Saxon said, that will require drydocking for replacement of its hull planking above the waterline. • The Tordenskjold was launched in 1911, but is considered a new addition, after retiring from service in 2012 and being added to the Seaport fleet in 2017. Saxon said the organization is working on a sustainable maintenance plan that could bring the diesel schooner back to operation for part of the year, then returning to display in South Lake Union for the rest. All told, the Seaport’s estimated restoration needs for the entire fleet will be $5 million to $10 million, a number they hope to reach through grants and donations. General donations are always welcome via their website, or interested parties can also support the restoration efforts by attending and giving at the organization’s virtual annual gala to be held on December 4th. For information on the gala, and the organization, visit: nwseaport.org.

NEWLY ARRIVED 2022 MODEL

The newest Apollonian 52 recently arrived in Longview WA and after being successfully offloaded from the ship immediately completed an ocean passage up the coast to the Straits of Juan De Fuca and into Puget Sound. The brand-new boat was set up with a Garmin 8616 radar upon arrival, fueled, provisioned, and loaded with safety gear in Astoria WA. The crew then crossed the notorious Columbia River bar (where the USCG conducts their lifeboat training) in heavy fog and headed to sea. They transited along a section of rugged coastline heading to the most North-Western tip of the continental USA landing in Neah Bay, WA near the mouth of the straits. The new Apollonian 52 ran over 300 miles offshore at a moderate cruise of 10.6knots covering just over one nautical mile per gallon. They completed the maiden voyage by running through the straits and admiralty inlet to Seattle where they transited the locks and into Lake Union. Completing a passage like this on a just launched boat is pretty amazing and demonstrates the inherent quality in every Apollonian. Designed from the keel up for serious

[ CRUISE NEWS ]

Ocean Victory to Begin B.C.-Alaska Cruises in 2022 Next year, a strikingly modern and luxurious new vessel is expected to begin carrying passengers from Vancouver, British Columbia, to the fjords and glaciers of Southeast Alaska. The 342-foot Ocean Victory, with its innovative X-Bow design, will be operated by Victory Cruise Lines for 12- to 13-day, round-trip cruises to Sitka, Alaska. According to Victory Cruise Lines, a sister brand of American Queen Steamboat Co., the cruises are expected to begin in May 2022 and will explore the less-traveled regions of Alaska’s Inside Passage, which larger ships cannot access. Initial ports of call will include Fiordland (Kynoch Inlet), Ketchikan/Metlakatla, Misty Fjords National Monument, the Wrangell/Stikine River Wilderness, the Waterfall Coast of the Baranof Islands, and several other locations that provide close-up views of glaciers and local wildlife.

Launched in 2020, Ocean Victory can accommodate up to 186 passengers and 100 crew members, providing the opportunity to intimately experience the wilds of the Alaska Panhandle. The journeys will include side expeditions via kayaks and Zodiac boats to view wildlife from sliding observation platforms. Passengers will also be able to observe marine research being carried out by California Polytechnic State University students and have discussions with First Nations leaders. “My most memorable travel experiences have always been journeys of complete immersion — whether it’s in a culture, an ecosystem, region, or simply being immersed with my family and fellow travelers,” said John Waggoner, chairman of Victory Cruise Lines. Victory Cruise sailings will be available from May through September 2022. For more information, visit: victorycruiselines.com.

[ MAINTAINING OUR WATERWAYS ]

Everett to Dredge Silted Boat Launch

For boaters who are tired of getting stranded on low-tide sandbars in Everett, Washington, help is on the way. Upcoming dredging operations in the region should clear the way at boat launches in the area. In August, the Port of Everett Commission authorized public works bids to complete maintenance dredging at the Jetty Landing Boat Launch, located at 10th Street and West Marine View Drive. The work is expected to take place this winter and continue through early 2022, removing up to 41,000 cubic yards of sediment built up by the Snohomish River. The Port is also coordinating with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to seek emergency authorization to expand its dredging authorization beyond the boat-launch footprint to mitigate sandbar growth into the Snohomish River Navigation Channel. If the action is successful, the Port could dredge an additional 8,000 cubic yards to create a connector channel through the sandbar. “We have reached a point where dredging the launch and establishing reliable access to and from the navigation channel is imperative to keeping this public facility operating as intended,” said Lisa

26

Lefeber, CEO of the Port of Everett. “Thousands of boaters depend on the launch and surrounding waterways to be accessible at all tide levels, including our local emergency responders who provide critical on-the-water life safety services.” The 13-lane boat launch is the largest in Washington state, accommodating more than 30,000 launches each year. To provide access to various Everett-area maritime locations, the launch must be dredged periodically to maintain navigable depths. This need has increased exponentially in recent years, due to extreme weather events and historical shifts in Snohomish River flow, the Port said. “To ensure the Port’s dredging investment provides value and the launch doesn’t fill right back up, we must prioritize a resolution for the increasing river siltation challenges at and around the launch,” Lefeber said. Until a longer-term solution for the shifts in river siltation can be addressed, the Port cautioned boaters to check tide schedules for anticipated departure and return times, and to be mindful of the drafts of their vessels. For more details on the dredging efforts, go to: portofeverett.com.

[ SHOW TIME ]

Seattle Boat Show Celebrates Diamond Anniversary with Move to Bell Harbor As part of the 75th anniversary celebration of the venerable Seattle Boat Show next year at Lumen Field Event Center, the Northwest Marine Trade Association (NMTA) that organizes the exhibition said it will move the afloat portion of the exhibition from South Lake Union to the Port of Seattle’s Bell Harbor Marina. The shift in venue will bring the in-water displays for the Boat Show much closer than in it has been in years past. Bell Harbor is located just 1.1 miles away from Lumen Field, which is adjacent to the second-largest parking garage in Seattle, making it much easier for attendees and exhibitors to move between the two locations. “I am a believer and supporter of the Seattle waterfront,” said NMTA president George Harris about the move. “Bell Harbor is also ‘show ready,’ with pristine docks, ample power on every dock, and an event-loving management team at the Port of Seattle. I’m certain Lumen Field Event Center

plus Bell Harbor Marina is the best location in the Northwest for local and out-of-town boaters to become inspired Northwest boaters.” Harris also said he is looking forward to the return of an in-person show after this year’s drastically Covid-limited, digital-only exhibition. “Boating interest is at an all-time high,” he said. “I’m certain the seamless integration of the indoor and afloat displays at Bell Harbor will make the 2022 Seattle Boat Show sparkle for its diamond anniversary.” Slated to run from February 4-12, 2022, the Boat Show moved forward on the calendar from January to February, in accordance with changes to this season’s NFL schedule, which has been extended from 16 weeks to 17. (Let’s hope the Seahawks will still be playing that late in the season!) For more information on registration and exhibitor details, visit the Boat Show website at: seattleboatshow.com.

Offshore Ranger. The 17-foot Sport Utility tender has even been modified for local Fire & Rescue departments and was chosen for its dependability and durability. “We are thrilled to be able to offer Bullfrog Boats to our trawler, sailboat, and cruising yacht customers,” says Peter Whiting, managing partner of Seattle Yachts. “The ability for these tenders to help you explore the environment around you in safety fits perfectly with our ‘Adventure Boating’ culture.” For more on the full line available via Seattle Yachts, go to: seattleyachts.com.

TH E CU RRE N T BY KATE CALAMUSA

Eagle Eye The new Garmin Surround View system takes the guesswork out of docking with an intuitive, 360-degree, bird’s-eye view from the helm.

It’s a statement emblazoned across myriad mugs, shirts, and stickers, and a mea culpa we’ve had to make a time... or nine: “I’m sorry for what I said while I was docking the boat.” Good news is, it has been a banner year in the effort to cure this long-running boating headache. Case in point: Following in the wake of the Volvo Penta assisted docking joystick tech that debuted at Consumer Electronic Show last January, comes the new Garmin Surround View, an intelligent camera system that gives a 360-degree view of the vessel while docking. Utilizing six through-hull mounted cameras that act like multiple sets of eyes, the Surround View provides a real-time, bird’s-eye view around the vessel to help captains quickly view their vessels’ perimeter during low-speed maneuvers. In addition to the full view—when the system is engaged it displays an overhead stitched image that can be viewed directly on compatible Garmin chartplotters or multi-function (MFD) helm displays—the system also comes equipped with a “bumper” indicator that shows when any non-water objects breach the perimeter surrounding the vessel. Then, similar to automotive backup camera systems, the Surround View also offers distance 32

markers and visual cues to aid in distance determinations while navigating in closer quarters such as marina slips or here locally, perhaps the crowded confines of the Ballard Locks. The sure-to-be swear word reducing system, which just made its domestic debut at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show at the end of October, is now available installed on new builds of Garmin’s boat building partners. For more information, visit: garmin.com/ SurroundView.

A super attractive way to find lost items It used to be that, unless you had scuba gear handy, any metal object you knocked overboard was forever claimed by the deep. Well, put that wetsuit away because now you can get your stuff back with pure magnetism: Chemist Travis Walkup, from Burlington, WA, has created the TackleMag, using a powerful magnet made from the rare-earth element neodymium. Encased in sturdy plastic that fits in your hand, the tool can provide an impressive 120 pounds of pull force on iron-containing objects, including keys, fishing poles, phones, tackle boxes, jewelry, knives, and heavy tools. If you can lift it with a rope, TackleMag can find it. Be careful, though. Pardo Endurance 60 Crafted for long-range cruising, the new Pardo Endurance 60 available from Jeff Brown Yachts offers a walkaround layout accented by the best in Italian interior design. The new Pardo Endurance 60 certainly lives up to its name, with a range of about 900 miles. The yacht also doesn’t skimp on wide open spaces for recreation and entertaining, while still maintaining elegant interior design. Introduced in September at the Cannes Yachting Festival, the Endurance 60 is the first Pardo model to support long-range capability, cruising comfortably at 10 to 12 knots or planing flat out at up to 25 knots. With copious amounts of soundproofing throughout, the Endurance 60 operates with low noise, even at high speeds. The inverted bow, which is increasingly common in modern yacht design, cuts an eye-catching profile for the Endurance 60. However, it’s most noticeable feature may be seen while the boat is at anchor. The gunwales and swim platform around the cockpit can be lowered hydraulically down to the water surface. These fold-out terraces create an impressive 440 square feet of veranda space, providing room for a dining area that can be protected from the sun by an electric Bimini top. The enclosed helm station offers 270 degrees of visibility and provides the skipper quick access to the side deck via an adjacent door. Up top, the completely open flybridge features a second helm station and can be furnished with sofas, cushioned sunbeds, and a refrigerator. Even in interior spaces, the walkaround layout provides ample room for movement to exterior areas. The finishes combine white lacquers with blond teak and can be customized with a wide variety of materials, fabrics, and colors. All the furniture is made in the carpentry department of the revered Cantiere del Pardo shipyard. An accordion door separates the salon from the cockpit, creating another large open space. The raised dining and lounge are positioned towards the bow for broad panoramic views. The fully equipped kitchen is positioned with easy access to dining tables and the outside cockpit. On the lower deck, the centrally positioned owner’s suite includes a sofa and spacious wardrobes. The VIP cabin at the bow has a private head available with either two single beds in a V-shaped configuration or one double bed, and a third guest cabin features two beds. A two-bed crew cabin, positioned under the aft-deck sunbed, has direct access to the engine room. The twin fuel-efficient hybrid Volvo Penta IPS engines are available in IPS 700 or 800 models, providing eco-sustainability and optional DynamicPositioning System capability for delicate mooring maneuvers, even with limited crew support. 39

This almost-new beauty, Summer Salt, will make you flip for its indoor-outdoor luxury. Featuring three staterooms that can sleep up to six people, the key feature of this 2022 Riviera 54’ is an enclosed flybridge that protects occupants from the elements. A tinted Strataglass wall opens the flybridge to an indoor-outdoor cockpit space with fixed transom seating, plus options for storage or a live-bait tank. A recently reupholstered, three-seat mezzanine lounge is located on the port side facing a double barbecue with LED lighting, a sink, and an icemaker. Blended into the helm dash is a three-screen Volvo Penta Glass Cockpit navigation system and Riviera’s C-Zone digital switching. A Garmin suite of equipment boasts GPS, a GSD 25 CHIRP sounder with 600W transducer, a 4kW open-array radar, receive-and-transmit AIS 800, and a GC 200 IP camera dome. Other features include Volvo auto pilot and joystick controls for easy docking capability. An internal floating staircase connects the Summer Salt’s flybridge to the interior salon, where guests can relax on an L-shaped lounge around a large table. Amenities include upgraded flooring, high-gloss walnut finishes, a wet bar with

solid-surface bench top, a refrigerator, and a sink with hot and cold tapware. The forward section is flooded in natural light and offers a comfortable C-shaped lounge with a hi-lo dining table. Entertainment options include a 43” LED TV, a Yamaha receiver, and a Blu-ray player. Aft of the salon, a fully equipped U-shaped galley, that includes a two-burner electric cooktop, a convection microwave oven, a drawer dishwasher, and a stainless steel sink, will keep a cook happy. Adjacent to the galley is a centrally located, rear-facing cockpit dinette. A plush three-seater settee includes an ottoman that slides out for additional seating around the main table. Belowdecks, the full-beam presidential master stateroom is located amidships and includes a king-size bed, a large hanging wardrobe, another 43” TV, a portside en suite, and unimpeded views through topside windows. Both the forward VIP stateroom and a starboard twin Pullman-berth cabin feature abundant storage and dual access to a day head and a stacked washer/dryer combo. The twin Volvo Penta D11 turbo diesel engines give the Summer Salt a muscular 725hp and include IPS 20 pod-drives to deliver maximum fuel economy and quiet operation.

STACKING THE DECK Propelled by a new storefront and more space for manufacturing, Raptor Deck is tightening its grip on a winning hand with the expansion of its innovative traction product line. By Kate Calamusa

FEATURE PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF RAPTOR DECK

59

Like many Seattle startups, from Microsoft to Amazon, Ballard-based Raptor Deck can trace its inception back to the most homegrown of headquarters: the garage. Today, it’s the trusted purveyor of high-quality foam grip decking materials that provide additional comfort and traction on deck. Raptor Deck was first inspired by a simple solution sourced from goods that CEO Dan Kaseler found in his garage almost a dozen years ago. Back then, Kaseler—well-known in the Northwest as an accomplished sailboat racer and sail designer, as well as for his innate knowledge of the wind-surfing and kite-boarding industries—was looking to add extra grip to his racing boat deck ahead of a world championship. He started experimenting with adhering foam similar to the non-skid versions he’d seen used on kiteboards and the rest, as they say, is history. “I actually had the foam stashed in my garage with a plan to replace the awful blue carpeting on my boat’s trailer bunks.” he recalls with a laugh. “But after playing around, a light went off for me, and I ended up coating my whole cockpit floor.” The homespun hack turned heads amongst his fellow competitors at the regatta, and soon Kaseler was fielding requests

60

to outfit other racing vessels. As the side hustle became a business in the years that followed, power boaters and yachters also took notice. The incredibly stylish foam systems deliver extra grip, durability, and plush padding for maneuverability around the vessel and also help keep deck surfaces from getting scratched. He still fondly recalls one huge turning point along the way: the day he received a call from a boat builder in the Midwest asking him to come out and pattern all their new builds for Raptor Deck systems to be offered as an upgrade. “I went to Sea-Tac the next day, bought the only ticket I’ve ever purchased at the counter, hopped on a plane, and went out and patterned all their boats completely on the fly.” Fast forward to 2021, and the brand has left the garage far behind. During the pandemic pause, Raptor Deck moved into the former West Marine space on Seaview Avenue, opening up a storefront space and expanding their manufacturing facilities. All of the decking kits are produced in-house and are custom made in a range of colors, thicknesses, and styles from templates matched to each boat’s specifications. DIY-driven customers can template their own boat and adhere the finished foam kit themselves, or Raptor Deck can handle the entire process from concept to creation to installation.

“WE LOVE A GOOD NAPKIN SKETCH; JUST GIVE US A SEED OF AN IDEA AND WE CAN MAKE SOMETHING REALLY COOL WITH IT.” -DAN KASELER, CEO

The most popular styles often resemble traditional wood planking, but because everything is drawn up, digitized, and made to order in Ballard, the team can also design more creative custom options and are always game to do so. “We love a good napkin sketch,” Kaseler says. “We always say, just give us a seed of an idea and we can make something really cool with it.” Innovative applications have thus emerged, such as custom logos or graphics inlaid into the deck kit or on cooler tops. Then there are the exceedingly practical applications such as a recent Ranger Tug owner who noticed his water bottle was scratching the gel coat as it rattled around in the cup holder at the helm, so Kaseler and company cut a personalized bumper pad for him; issue solved. “Everything is driven by the customer and we really maintain a constant openness to new ideas,” Kaseler explains. “And people are finding all kinds of interesting uses for it; turns out foam with glue is just extremely handy.” Building on their banner year, Raptor Deck will soon debut the next evolution in marine non-skid tech. Kaseler believes the industry is shifting away from molded and painted textures

to a future that utilizes options that are held in place with pressure-sensitive adhesives. Raptor will now also offer kits and parts cut from Harken Marine Grip, a more rubberized traction product. This new product is well suited to high-traffic areas and commercial-grade vessels like tugboats, fishing trawlers, ferries, and the like. “While Marine Grip doesn’t offer the same padded comfort, the material has exceptional durability, and truly unmatched non-skid properties for environments where safety is paramount,” he says. In addition to dedicated kits, Raptor Deck will also offer mixed packages that utilize both materials. For recreational boaters, this could mean installing the softer foam for comfort on a main deck and benches, and then supplementing with the Harken Marine Grip in areas that need extra traction or endure excessive wear. Kaseler hopes to have initial styles available this month, with an expanded selection by spring 2022, so it looks like next year might just be another winning one for this hometown brand. >> For more information on Raptor Deck and all their product lines, visit: raptordeck.com. 61

TI GH T L I N E S BY MARK YUASA

Crab to Coho to Chinook Hooked on fishing: MARK YUASA is packing up the crab pots and fishing rods for some late fall escapism. Are you getting tired of all the bad news? Likewise. It’s been a constant media blitz about the pandemic, traffic jams, soaring grocery store and gas prices, a lack of toilet paper (again). Where’s my fishing rod? For the majority of my life, I’ve looked to de-stress by getting outside for a breath of fresh air. I plan my days and vacations around time on the water. This is my snow globe and it should be yours, too! If you’re a reader of this column, you’ve learned the Pacific Northwest delivers a plethora of outdoor opportunities. Even in the waning days of autumn, I’m glad to report Dungeness crab, and coho or Chinook salmon are there for the taking. “Winter crabbing doesn’t draw as many people compared to summer, but it’s a fun fishery and can be good in some marine areas,” said Don Velasquez, a head Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) shellfish biologist. Plot a course for the Strait of Juan de Fuca (Marine Catch Areas 4 east of Bonilla-Tatoosh line, and 5 and 6); San Juan Islands (7); Deception Pass, Hope Island, Skagit Bay, Port Susan, and Port Gardner (8-1 and 8-2); northern Puget Sound (9); and Hood Canal north of Ayock Point (12), all of which are open daily through December 31. Central and south-central Puget Sound (10 and 11) are closed since a large portion of the sport quota is set aside for summer. WDFW was evaluating catch estimates last month to weigh reopening a winter fishery. Southern Puget Sound (13) and Hood Canal south of Ayock Point (12) are closed to allow Dungeness crab populations to rebuild. Crab pots may be set or pulled from a vessel from one hour before official sunrise through one hour after official sunset. Daily limit is five Dungeness crab (males only) in hard-shell condition. Be sure to measure Dungeness crab precisely: they must be at least 6 ¼ inches at widest point of the shell just in front of rearmost point or tips and an accurate way to gauge this it is to use a tackle-store bought plastic caliper crab gauge (not a dollar bill). A Puget Sound crab endorsement and winter catch card are required. On additional FYI: Dungeness crab kept must be recorded immediately on catch cards as WDFW enforcement has adopted a zero tolerance for those who don’t fill them out properly. As plastic zip cords are illegal, biodegradable rot cords are mandatory to secure lid and escape hatches on pots. A derelict pot without a proper cord can kill crabs for many years. Improperly marked pots are a violation, and each must have your name and contact information. 62

Autumn salmon possibilities There are three marine areas, and some western Washington rivers, that are open for those seeking a tasty Chinook or coho to place on the dinner table. Here’s the run-down: South-central Puget Sound (Area 11) from north tip of Vashon Island to the Narrows Bridge is open through December 31. Daily limit is two salmon with 22-inch size limit for hatchery Chinook. Release coho, chum and wild, unmarked Chinook. Southern Puget Sound (13) south of the Narrows Bridge is open year-round. Daily limit is two salmon with 22-inch size limit for hatchery Chinook. Release chum, and wild, unmarked coho and Chinook. Hood Canal (12) is open through November 30. Daily limit is four salmon, and release Chinook. A number of local rivers are fair game, but be sure to check the regulation pamphlet for what’s open or closed. The best late-season options occur in southwest Washington where the Cowlitz River expects a robust 156,690 hatchery coho. “We’re going to have ample opportunities on the Cowlitz, and we’ve got a phenomenal number of them returning,” says Todd Daniels, owner of Tall Tails Guide Service (206.437.8766; talltailsguideservice.com). “You can find good fishing well into November with water conditions permitting.” Runner-up is the Lewis River with a projected 129,313 coho. The Washougal River also delivers decent coho action through Thanksgiving as fish trickle in through early December. My final thoughts are sugar-coated on an update by WDFW that a few Puget Sound region coho returns are noteworthy and achieving spawning goals. A cherry on top of this sundae is summer Chinook spawning was strong with a record egg take last month. Fingers are crossed for the future and I’ll see you on the water soon! Mark Yuasa is a longtime fishing and outdoor writer. Born and raised in Seattle, and a UW alum, Mark joined the Northwest Marine Trade Association in 2017 as the Director of Grow Boating Programs after 33 years at The Seattle Times. He also volunteers with the BSA Chief Seattle Council and National Order of the Arrow organizations, and enjoys fishing for salmon and other fish species in local waterways.

O N WATCH BY PETER SCHRAPPEN

Focus, Empathy & Impute Some Sound advice: PETER SCHRAPPEN takes a page from Steve Jobs’ playbook when considering how to best push boating initiatives through local legislation. Apple Co-Founder Steve Jobs’ marketing principles were summed up in a tidy one-pager entitled The Apple Marketing Philosophy. The first core principle was empathy, an intimate connection with the feelings of the customer: “We will truly understand their needs better than any other company.” The second was focus: “In order to do a good job of those things that we decide to do, we must eliminate all of the unimportant opportunities.” The third and equally important principle, awkwardly named, was impute, according to Walter Isaacson’s masterful biography of Jobs. It emphasized that people form an opinion about a company or product based on the signals that it conveys: “People DO judge a book by its cover.” Mr. Jobs’ guidance would serve as sound recreational boating advice, too. While biased, I am pleased to report that for the most part, we have unintentionally adopted these same principles. For the focus, think about the three bills involving copper bottom paint that recreational boaters (via Recreational Boating Association of Washington) and boating businesses (thanks to Northwest Marine Trade Association) have coalesced around in the last ten years. To refresh your memory, Governor Inslee signed the latest one, Senate Bill 6210, in 2020. This remarkable law phases out copper bottom paint only if a stakeholder group “determines that safer and effective alternatives to copper-based antifouling paints are feasible, reasonable, and readily available.” This group will meet in 2024 and if they find enough quality alternatives, then the phase-out of copper-bottom paint will begin on January 1, 2026. If the stakeholder group determines that copper-free paints are not passing muster in 2024, then a second study will begin in 2029 to see if there are more choices then. You may remember that boaters and industry could live with these dates when the bill became law. As for empathy, the boating advocacy arm reminded key legislators that happy boaters are more likely to double as happy constituents. Who wants 64

grumpy boaters phoning their offices complaining about a ban on copper paint that leaves mariners with few options that work as well and are as ecologically sound? The lobbying team also praised the legislative champions to whomever would listen, scoring more empathy points. If there’s one thing lawmakers like, it’s praise. Also, money can serve as a way to measure empathy. Political action committees can “focus” (there’s that word again) their donations and be there for legislators when called upon to help meet fundraising goals. NMTA’s Political Action Committee made tough decisions to follow the heuristic to thank champions first and foremost with their limited campaign dollars. Nothing says empathy like a campaign check. As for imputing, that’s all about messaging. It’s washing your mouth out with soap if during testimony and meetings the word “yacht,” or, heavens to Betsy, “superyacht” appear. Rather, more vanilla words like “vessels” matter more. Believe it or not, it’s all about underselling the boats with lawmakers and overemphasizing, excuse me, imputing that boating means business. This messaging can take the shape of tours at boatbuilders or boatyards. After all, who’s not for a working waterfront? Who’s not for recognizing the economic impact of recreational boating’s $6.9 billion commerce in the state? As it turns out, boating is credited with being recreational gold and the recreational boating lobby has strung together a number of victories due to RBAW’s savvy team and the combined effort that’s taken place behind the scenes with NMTA. The state’s entire maritime industry is indeed working on your behalf. Peter Schrappen is Northwest Marine Trade Association’s Government Affairs Director and the Clean Boating Foundation’s Executive Director. Additionally, he serves on the boards of the Boating Safety Advisory Council, Washington Boating Alliance, and U.S. Superyacht Association.

AS K N IGE L BY NIGEL BARRON

Thrusters, Check NIGEL BARRON tackles the big questions about one of the popular off-season upgrades: bow thrusters. Now is the time of year I write about activities to consider when putting your boat to bed for the winter—things like removing soft goods, getting a dehumidifier, and thinking about fuel stabilization. Lately, customers have emailed about when a good time would be to bring a boat in for some off-season upgrades and one of the most popular inquiries is about bow thrusters. It used to be that the off-season in boating went from late October until Opening Day on the first weekend in May. But that has become less true for boat yards. Likely a combination of more people boating year-round and fewer recreational boatyards is keeping schedules fairly tight. I have said to coworkers that that no one has ever complained that their bow thruster worked too well or that they wish they didn’t have one. Estimating a thruster install is straightforward; CSR Marine does around twenty a year. We know how much time it takes to glass in a fiberglass tunnel, and we know how much time the wiring takes. After that, it’s about the specifics of the boat and what sort of access we have for the fiberglass and the wire runs. But getting one will take time. For thruster installs, a big factor at the moment is availability of parts. We have rescheduled several boats because we’re finding lead times of 6-8 weeks for some of the components. The backlog on parts is not limited to any specific brand or supplier and covers the entire industry. Airmar, one of the largest transducer manufacturers, predicts a 3- to 4-month backlog for some of their transducers. Sunbrella has shortages of specific fabric colors for dodgers and cushions. If you are shopping around for a bow thruster, make sure you are looking at a quote for a complete thruster install. When I say complete, I mean ask if the quote is just for a motor and tunnel or if it includes the charging system, batteries, and all associated wiring. A quick tip in researching thrusters: Look at what the manufacturer specifies for a minimum battery capacity. Pay attention though, because

66

some of the European companies will give a minimum capacity in DIN and not SAE. Side-Power recommends taking the DIN rating and multiplying by 1.9 to get an SAE capacity rating. DC thrusters have specific voltage requirements, and, like all DC motors, are negatively affected by low voltage. We tend to use exclusively AGM batteries for the thruster installs, because for a bow thruster the batteries usually end up under a bunk. With the price of batteries, it’s an easy shock come bill-paying time if batteries were not on the original quote. To determine the appropriate thruster for a boat, we look at the overall size and displacement, and any other things such as a lot of windage that might change the effectiveness of a given thruster. All thruster manufacturers have a general size range that they reference. Again, as no one complains a thruster works too well, look at the size of the tunnel and the size of the motor. For instance, a Side-Power SE-80 thruster and the bigger SE-100 share the same tunnel size. If your boat fits between the two in terms of thruster requirements and it can fit, consider the bigger thruster. The biggest question is how long will it take? We like to estimate at least three weeks for a thruster install. It’s obviously not 120 hours of labor, but drying and curing time factors in because of the fiberglass and the fairing of the tunnel, along with the need to paint the tunnel. This makes a thruster an ideal off-season project. Nigel Barron was born in England and developed his sea legs at an early age. He is currently the project manager at CSR Marine in Seattle, where he has worked for 15 years, first as a rigger, then an installer, and now in his current role. He is also the captain of Zvi, a Reichel-Pugh designed and McConaghy-built custom race boat from Seattle.

R AC I N G SH E E T BY DOUG HANSEN

Eastern Exposure

DOUG HANSEN and his Seattle-based crew take home the win at the U.S. Offshore Sailing Championship 2021 in Annapolis, Maryland.

Every other summer, US Sailing puts on the U.S. Offshore Sailing Championship, an invitational regatta with all the bells and whistles provided by the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Open to any US Sailing member in the country, skippers apply to US Sailing detailing their team, past events, and regattas as a group. Basic requirements are that at least five of the seven crew have sailed together in a minimum number of events over the past year. This year’s regatta saw eight teams registered from all corners of the country, to name a few: Rhode Island, San Diego, Florida, and excitedly, our own team from Seattle. In addition to the traveling competitors, the Naval academy offshore team fielded a boat of their varsity midshipmen, by far the favorites going into the weekend. After a year of minimal travel outside of our home waters, it was a fantastic chance to make new friends and catch up on what has been going on around the country. Our team this year was comprised of many regulars from races aboard our Northwest-based boat Smoke: Lucy Joel, Kaitlin Amedio, Josh May, Christina Travis, Bryan Rhodes, and myself, plus Steve Travis at the helm. Our midshipman for the weekend was first classman Keegan Steele, an offshore racing team member and skipper on the Navy Farr 40’s. While our team was full of seasoned racers with a wealth of experience on some fast boats, our equipment for the weekend was somewhat less than what anyone would consider fast. The Navy 44’s were built to take groups of first and second year midshipmen offshore for extended training trips, and are built like tanks. Heavy, sturdy, and nearly impossible to get moving in light air, and equally difficult to stop on heavy air, these boats present their own challenge to shepherd around the racecourse. Thankfully, the event is a one design format, with crews switching vessels each day, taking their sails with them from boat to boat, making as even of a playing field as practical for all the racing teams. 68

The first day of the event brought with it light wind from an unfamiliar northwesterly direction as a frontal system had passed the day before. Quick thirty-minute short course buoy racing was in store for the early part of the day and it was an impressive level of intensity right out of the gate as teams came into the line fast and jockeyed for position on the favored end. The day wrapped up with a longer coastal style distance race that took us on a tour of the Chesapeake Bay in dying breeze and swirling currents. Being from Seattle, we felt right at home and we ended up in a solid third place for the day with the Naval Academy Team leading the fleet. On the second day of racing, the post-frontal conditions won out, and after several hours of sitting and waiting, it was decided that our time was better spent exploring the historic town of Annapolis. Having some time to walk the Academy’s campus and enjoy the town was amazing, and the amount of sailing history always blows us Western kids away. Finally wrapping up the day with sunset drinks at the Annapolis Yacht Club with our loaner midshipman “Keegs” in tow was certainly a highlight of the trip. The final day of racing brought with it some breeze, quite a lot of breeze to be precise. Things got underway on time with a pair of distance races sending us to some familiar marks and a couple new ones as the day progressed. Coming into the final race on the last day, we had a clean start and found ourselves in the lead pack at the first mark, following a sporty and neck-and-neck spinnaker run, we came into the leeward mark in a three-way tie with our closest competition, and thanks to amazing crew work at the rounding, came out literally on top. From there, it was just a game of staying between our competition and the finish, which got stressful in moments headed to the finish in the shifty high winds. At the end of the day, we found ourselves on the top of the list, and with smiles abound, we cleaned up the boat, took a quick team photo, and piled into the cars to get to the airport to catch our flight back to Seattle! An absolutely whirlwind of a weekend, and easily one of the highlights of my sailing career thus far.

Adventure Cruise Soak up some sun, swim with the sharks, spin the roulette wheel. There’s something for everyone in the stunning destination of Nassau and Paradise Island in the Bahamas.

74

Dreaming of a destination with white sand beaches, bright turquoise waters, and incredible night life? Then come to Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, and the adjoining Paradise Island, the perfect destinations for guests who love to relax by the beach during the day and spin the roulette wheel at night. The bustling city of Nassau is known for providing an experience where the ease of the tropics meets the hum of city life. There is so much to be explored beyond the beautiful beaches including the island’s Heritage Museum of The Bahamas, the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas, and the traditional changing of the Guard, a tradition since 1958 and a reflection of its time as a British colony. Nassau lies on the island of New Providence, with neighboring access to the amazing Paradise Island, home to many large resorts including the famous Atlantis Paradise Island. This ocean-themed resort features fresh and saltwater lagoons, pools, waterslides, casinos, restaurants, and more throughout the 100-acre retreat. The Bahamas has wonderful weather with an average high of 91 in the summer and a low of 64 in the winter. With the mild winter temperatures and the least chance of rain between December and March, the best time to visit the Bahamas is from mid-December to mid-April. To begin your luxury yacht vacation, you will cruise the Atlantic Ocean before landing in the Bahamas. There you will anchor off the island to enjoy a delicious fresh lunch served topside and made by your onboard professional chef. After lunch, you can spend the rest of the day lying in the sun and enjoying the most spectacular view from the deck. Once you are ready for dinner, you can make your way to the aft deck for a gorgeous sunset and a handmade cocktail while your meal is being prepared. What better way to commence an amazing vacation? After a good night’s sleep and a delectable breakfast, it is time for an adventure. To kick off the second day of your vacation, your captain will take you to their favorite snorkeling location. The Bahamas is well-known for incredible snorkeling. You will feel at peace floating in the turquoise water amongst the magnificent coral reefs filled with bright neon fish.

If your group is interested in a casino night, your captain will dock at The Atlantis Marina. Here you will disembark for a night of fun, starting with dinner at Nobu and followed by a night of drinking and gambling at the Atlantis Casino. Get ready to spend a beautiful day in paradise at a Four Seasons Resort after the night’s fun. You will have the choice to either relax by the pool at The Ocean Club or spend the day golfing at The Ocean Club Golf Course. This gorgeous golf course has views of the Atlantic Ocean and Nassau Harbor at every turn. For those who choose a relaxing pool day, there are three pools to select from: a lagoon-style family pool, an adult-only pool that offers an elegant sanctuary, and the Ocean Pool which is the ultimate lounging pool. Whichever adventure you choose, you will have a fantastic day. Next is another sunset cruise with dinner and drinks on the aft deck to unwind from the day. Enjoy the quiet of the waves lapping while you are sitting with your favorite people and savoring the exquisite meal your chef has prepared for you. If you crave a real adrenaline rush, you can schedule diving with sharks through Stuart Cove’s Dive Bahamas. The company’s Shark Adventure is a 2-tank dive program that will introduce thrill-seeking divers to wild sharks. If the shark adventure isn’t your speed and you would rather swim with majestic dolphins, you can do that at the Dolphin Cay at Atlantis, Paradise Island. Dolphin Cay showcases one of the largest and most sophisticated marine habitats and animal rescue and rehabilitation facilities. No matter what adventure you fancy, you can do it in Nassau and Paradise Island. With so much to do, there is something for everyone from history buffs to adrenaline junkies to poolside sun seekers.
