Zin Boats model Z2R was recently named in the top four best electric tenders by BOAT International. This 20-foot allcarbon Z2R, is powered by a BMW i3 40.5 KW battery and is designed to travel up to 100 miles when fully charged from either a 100V or 220V power source.

Zin Boats: The Electric Evolution By Schelleen Rathkopf Super slick, minimal, and quiet, the Z2R runabout and the Z2T tender are the creations of boatbuilder Piotr Zin, founder of Zin Boats in Seattle. With a top speed around 30 knots, combined with zero emissions and virtually no maintenance requirements, these boats are turning heads. Some speculate that having them on board large yachts as tenders is the way of the future.

Correction: In the September issue of Northwest Yachting, we inadvertently used a photograph of a farmed raised Atlantic salmon instead of a wild caught coho salmon in the Tight Lines column. We regret the error, and appreciate Tight Lines columnist, Mark Yuasa bringing it to our attention. The black spots on the cheek, combined with the small dorsal and pectoral fins are the distinguishing features of the Atlantic salmon, and we will take more care to identify the correct species in our imagery in the future.

Nautical News BY RANDY WOODS

Giving Pregnant Orcas a Wide Berth To accommodate the space needed for several new pregnancies discovered among the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whale (SRKW) population, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, NOAA Fisheries, whale watch leaders, and Soundwatch are calling for boaters to steer clear of the whales and give them extra space on the water. “The whales, for the first time in a couple years, are very present,” said Alan Myers, captain of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Police. “Unfortunately, we’re having a lot of people get too close to orcas within these regulated boundaries. That bubble of protection is extremely important in order to keep boaters either intentionally or unintentionally from interfering with these animals.” A photogrammetry team from SR3 and Southall Environmental Associates documented multiple pregnancies in all three SRKW pods. While this is promising news, research has shown that many Southern Resident pregnancies fail or the calves do not survive beyond their first year. A lack of sufficient Chinook salmon prey has been a longtime threat to the orca population, but vessel traffic and excessive speed can also 16

interrupt echolocation clicks the whales use to track and capture fish. Washington Gov. Jay Inslee signed new orca viewing regulations into law last year requiring vessels to stay at least 300 yards from the SRKWs and at least 400 yards out of the paths of their pods, both ahead of and behind the whales. Vessels must also reduce their speed to seven knots within a half-mile of SRKWs. The Pacific Whale Watch Association (PWWA) has also developed science-based guidelines to give the whales space and minimize impacts. “If you’re out in your boat and you see a whale-watch vessel traveling slowly, or giving certain whales extra space, please slow down or go around,” said Kelley Balcomb-Bartok, communications director for the PWWA. For the latest details on regulations and guidelines, visit BeWhaleWise.org, which includes illustrations explaining the latest changes. Boaters can download a brochure before heading out on the water or keep an eye out for the Soundwatch Boater Education Program.

CYC Floats to Temporary Home on Lake Union Seattle-area boaters were treated to an unusual sight along Shilshole Bay, Salmon Bay and the Ballard Locks on Sept. 1. The well-known and much-loved Corinthian Yacht Club (CYC) – a fixture of Shilshole Marina for the last half-century – was on the move, being towed by two Fremont Tugboat Co. tugs toward a Lake Union drydock for a major overhauls and repairs. Cindy Barrett, business manager for the CYC, told Northwest Yachting that the most critical work on the floating structure will involve hull repair, “namely, sandblasting, repairing and repainting the hull,” as well as the addition of new thermal double-paned windows. Workers also plan to repair any exposed dry rot on the structure and replace the vinyl siding with a combination of metal, wood-replica and HardiePlank siding, and make exterior door upgrades to improve building egress, she added. Other tasks considered of “medium-scope” in priority will include disconnecting, servicing and reactivating the club’s electrical and plumbing systems, and replacement of the fire panel, Barrett said. The CYC also plans to make other interior upgrades, such as acoustic improvements, new paint, and new carpeting, but they are considered “ contingent on our financial situation after the must-dos” are completed, she said. 18

Commissioned on Oct. 18, 1969, the clubhouse has been in Shilshole for more than 50 years. The last time the floating clubhouse was hauled out for maintenance was Sept. 17, 1996, so there is nearly a quarter-century’s worth of wear and tear to be addressed on the structure. The CYC, founded by World War II veterans in Seattle’s Leschi neighborhood on Lake Washington, currently owns a fleet of 16 Optimist sailboats and six Vanguard 15s. The club hosts a variety of cruising events throughout the year and offers sail camps and clinics for juniors and adults. The repair work, now being done at the Lake Union Drydock near the Ballard Bridge, is expected to take until the first week of December, Barrett said. “The large locks are closed from mid-October until December 3rd, so finishing early won’t speed up the return of the clubhouse,” she said. Total costs for the overhaul are estimated at just under $600,000, which Barrett said the CYC hopes to raise via a Go Fund Me campaign by the end of the year. Marine Servicenter Named Jeanneau Sailboat Dealer of the Year Marine Servicenter has been named the 2020 Jeanneau North American Sailboat Dealer of the Year. This is the second consecutive time the Pacific Northwest company has won this prestigious honor and the third time in the past five years, last winning in 2019 and 2016. The Jeanneau North American Dealer of the Year award is presented to only one of 22 dealerships in North America. The award honors the dealer that excels in Jeanneau owners’ customer satisfaction, after sales service, annual sales volume and exceptional owners’ events and owner’s support. In 1977, Jim and Jeanna Rard started Marine Servicenter in a little shop in Seattle. Over the years, the business expanded to include new and used yacht sales, yacht dry storage, and a marine store. After 43 years in the boatyard business, Jim and Jeanna sold the boatyard portion of Marine Servicenter this year, in order to concentrate on new and used yacht sales. The boatyard in Anacortes is fully functioning under the direction of Seattle Yachts, who retained all the employees that have been working there for many years.

Swiftsure Yachts Moves Up the Street

Longtime Lake Union business Swiftsure Yachts has moved about 200 yards north on the lakeshore to 2540 Westlake Ave. N. The move provides Swiftsure with additional office and moorage space while remaining a presence in the historic marine environment of Seattle’s Lake Union. “We love the location,” said managing partner Ryan Helling. “It’s easily accessible by boat or car, and it’s close to the boatyards and Ship Canal.” This stretch of waterfront on the west side of the lake is where boat-builder Dave LeClercq called home for several years while he launched hundreds of Bill Garden-designed gillnetters and seiners. In 2002, the partners of Swiftsure Yachts joined to create a full-service brokerage for yachtsmen interested in buying or selling high-quality boats. Swiftsure’s new offices are open Monday through Friday from 9-5, and 10-4 on Saturdays. Ample parking is available immediately in front of the offices. 20

Bellingham Yachts Continues Ouilette Family Legacy Bellingham Yachts, which has been operated by the husband-and-wife team of Dean and Donna Ouilette since 1984, has transferred ownership to the couple’s son Matt and his wife Heather, as of July 1. Dean Ouilette said he will continue working for the business until the end of 2021, while his brother Nick retired from his position of co-owner in August. Matt Ouilette has been with the company for the last 17 years, absorbing business knowledge and industry experience from Dean and Nick. Both Matt and Heather possess business acumen and share a desire to build long lasting relationships with their customers and employees. As Dean, Donna, and Nick prepared to retire, they recognized how Matt and Heather have established deep relationships with vendors, customers, and employees, and desired to purchase Bellingham Yachts. Matt Ouilette officially joined the business in 2003, starting with painting hull bottoms and doing detail work. Eventually, he joined the 22

sales team in 2006 as a yacht broker, the same year he met Heather, who had been the company’s receptionist. In 2018, after earning her MBA and operating her own clothing boutique, Heather returned to Bellingham Yachts as chief financial officer. Dean and Donna Ouilette first moved to the West Coast from Maine in 1979 while Dean was a deck officer for ARCO in the Merchant Marine. In 1984, Dean and Donna purchased a small yacht brokerage firm and later hired Nick Ouilette, who had been an engineering officer in the Merchant Marine, to join them as co-owners of Bellingham Yachts. For the first six years, Bellingham Yachts was a small operation, selling brokerage boats and managing a small charter fleet. By 1990, the Ouilettes become the Northwest dealer for Sabre Yachts, based out of Raymond, Maine. From 1998 to 2007, Bellingham Yachts represented Albin Marine of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and became a dealer for Sabre’s sister company, Back Cove Yachts, in 1990.

Boats Afloat Show Opens in Virtual Form Although the landscape for marketing yachts for sale has drastically changed due to COVID-19 concerns, the Northwest Yacht Brokers Association (NYBA) said the interest in purchasing luxury yachts remained undiminished this summer. Weeks in advance of the Worth Avenue Yachts Boats Afloat Show’s Open House, scheduled for Sept 18-20, Leann Warren, director of operations for NYBA, reported that exhibitors had already reported leads and sales. The Worth Avenue Yachts team, she said, reported the sale of 14 yachts since July. Four of the sales were accomplished by the West Coast offices, she added. The Virtual Boat Show had 11 featured listings and 87 worldwide listings, with several teams standing by to schedule virtual showings. The Boats Afloat Show is recognized as the largest floating boat show on the West Coast. Due to COVID-19, however, the show provided a safer alternative to the original, large-scale physical show. Worth Avenue Yachts scheduled live showings around the greater Seattle area during the September show, and there will be featured listings in six different locations.. Because of the splurge in inquiries, Worth Avenue’s team completed sales quickly, Warren said. “Our charter requests are also up as families are seeking private getaways in these uncertain times,” she said. For more information on Boats Afloat listings, visit boatsafloatshow.com.

Bellingham Ferry Service Increases to Help Stranded Point Roberts Residents In one of the more unusual quirks of the ongoing coronavirus crisis, the Port of Bellingham has temporarily increased the frequency of its emergency ferry service last month to aid residents of Point Roberts, who have been left stranded by international border-crossing restrictions. Located at the tip of a peninsula extending southward from Vancouver, British Columbia, and the Canadian ship terminal in Tsawwassen, Point Roberts is part of Whatcom County, Washington, but is not connected the United States by land. The 1,300 American residents of Point Roberts can only reach the rest of the country by crossing in a vehicle over the Canadian border, flying in on a small plane, or by private boat. However, since the U.S./Canada border has been closed to non-essential travel since March due to COVID-19 concerns, people in Point Roberts are no longer able to cross by land without being quarantined for 14 days to prove that they do not carry the deadly virus. These restrictions, at press time, were scheduled to last at least until Sept. 21, and perhaps longer. 24

To help facilitate the enclave’s connection to the rest of Whatcom County, Bellingham began passenger-only ferry service on Sept 8 to and from the Point Roberts marina on a twice-weekly schedule. The ferry is free of charge to Point Roberts residents on Tuesdays and Fridays each week. The ferries also provide faster service for critical goods and emergency services that have been hampered by COVID-19 restrictions. The arrival location was changed from Blaine Harbor to Bellingham to give Point Roberts’ residents more time for shopping, doctors’ visits, and other necessities. Space is reportedly still limited, so reservations are required and granted on a first-come, first-served basis. For complete transit schedules and route information, please visit ridewta.com. Face masks are required on the two-hour ferry trips aboard the 100-foot vessel “Salish Express,” operated by San Juan Cruises. Departure and arrival times, as well as the sailing frequency, may change based on passenger input and demand, so please check the port’s website (portofbellingham.com/pointrobertsferry) for the latest schedule information.

2006 GRAND BANKS 39 EASTBAY SX This 2006 darling, appropriately dubbed Mon Cheri, is a Bristol example of the Downeast yacht design popularized by the Grand Banks Eastbay. Custom built for an experienced yachtsman and optioned for Northwest cruising, the Mon Cheri has a personalized living space, commissioned by noted yacht interior decorator Sylvia Bolton, featuring textured wall coverings, premium leather upholstery, custom teak furniture and natural soft goods. The spacious, teak-lined cockpit includes built-in seating and generous storage space. At the forward corners, steps lead to wide, walkaround decks. Amidship in the cockpit, two steps lead to the salon, which is arranged with an L-shaped settee and storage ottoman. An electronics cabinet contains a KVH TracVision satellite television receiver for a Sony KLV 19” flat-screen. Forward in the salon, one descends three steps to access a leather-covered convertible dinette that surrounds a custom teak dining table with a compass rose as its center. Forward of the dinette is a built-in china locker. Opposite the dinette is the head, with walk-in shower, a VacuFlush fresh-water toilet, and cultured-stone countertops. 36

The galley features undercounter refrigeration, a two-burner electric cooktop, a built-in microwave oven, a corner sink and hand-finished teak cabinetry. A handmade custom teak cabinet housing the U-Line icemaker is topped by a hideaway leather-covered companion seat. Fully forward is the master stateroom, with a queen-sized berth on centerline, recently upgraded with a premium comfort mattress. The stateroom also has abundant storage with hanging lockers and large storage drawers beneath the foot of the berth. Powered by twin Yanmar 6LYSM 430-horsepower diesel engines, with digital throttle and shift controls. The boat has at top speed of 32 mph, a cruising speed of 23 mph, and fewer than 900 total engine hours of use. Electronics include a Furuno NavNet VX2 system, with dual monitors, color depth sounder/fish finder, GPS/Chartplotter, 4kW closed-array radar, and Simrad autopilot with a wireless remote. Mon Cheri has always been moored under cover to keep out the weather, and her dark blue gelcoat has been waxed annually. Her bottom was repainted in October 2019 and all zincs were all replaced in July 2019.

2018 SABRE 38 SALON EXPRESS The Sabre 38—named Tatsu, after a Japanese mythical flying beast— has an exterior profile that says Downeast, yet is bursting with new technology such as a Garmin GSD 25 premium sonar module, a GT51M-TH thru-hull traditional, ClearVu and SideVu 12-pin transducer, a GXM 53 satellite weather and audio antenna, and a Fantom 24” Pulse Compression Dome Radar with MotionScope. This one-owner fiberglass boat is powered by twin Volvo Penta D4 300-horsepower diesel engines with IPS Drive and less than 250 hours of use. The powertrain provides a maximum speed of 30 knots and a cruising speed of 25 knots. The boat incorporates hull lines that are at the cutting edge of vee-hulled motor yacht development, specifically designed for the installation of pods. The pod drive train of this Sabre 38 offers excellent fuel economy and lower noise levels by pushing out exhaust through the propeller stream and enabling confident boat handling when docking or maneuvering in tight spaces. The interior of Tatsu is an open design that will suit anything, from one-day outings with friends to longer family cruises. The cockpit is

raised to a level just 5 inches below the main salon so as to connect these two important social spaces, and the aft end opens with dropdown windows and a swing door. In the main salon, there is a large, U-shaped settee with a fold-over table that can seat up to six people, while the top end of the settee can be oriented forward to provide a comfortable perch when underway. The forward cabin incudes a berth that has been recently upgraded with in 9”-thick, dualcompression latex mattress. The galley is equipped with a refrigerator and microwave oven, a deep freezer, and a Spectra Ventura 150 MPC fresh-water maker. Aft of the Stidd helm seat is a long cabinet that houses an LED television and storage compartments for the owner’s gear. A Fusion Blackbox Marine sound system with Bluetooth and four speakers can get the party started quickly. Other equipment includes a Marinco Precision spotlight with a wireless remote and a Webasto hot air diesel furnace. For diving fun, there is also a swim platform with an undermounted ladder.

Royal Stabilis Offers Non-Spill Wine Glasses When the seas get rough, you never want to run the risk of spilling drinks at your next boat party. That’s why Royal Stabilis created stemware in real, lead-free crystal glass that won’t budge on choppy seas. The secret is a tiny magnet embedded in the base of each glass. Just place the full beverage on the 8” X 8” metal serving tray and the wine stays put. Holding up to four wine glasses at a time, the stainless-steel tray acts as a “home base” for drinks and comes equipped with non-slip bumpers to prevent the tray from sliding as well. The look of real crystal wine glasses on board will put disposable plastic glasses to shame. Available in sets of four (white wine, red wine and champagne-flute styles) for $59.

Inflate Your Stand-Up Paddleboard Game Stand-up paddleboarding is all the rage these days among recreational boaters, but there’s not always room to carry bulky, rigid boards on smaller watercraft – that is, unless you have an FBsport inflatable stand-up paddleboard (iSUP) that can be stored in a backpack and inflated to 15 PSI within minutes for easy use. The iSUP has great buoyancy and light-yet-sturdy construction for heavy use. Perfect for beginners or experienced riders, iSUP weighs just 22 pounds and also comes with a do-it-yourself repair kit for small, occasional punctures. The FBsport iSUP is available in violet-blue, blue and mint green colors for $389.90, and comes with an extendable paddle, air pump, carrying backpack, ankle leash and three fins. Check out FB-sport.com. 48

Boating with Missy By Melissa Gervais

Time in a Bottle It was a glorious morning, not a ripple on the water nor a breeze in the air. I was enjoying a mimosa on the dock with my friends and no one was speaking. The temperature had dropped, and fall was most definitely in the air. We all were enjoying the solitude of the moment in full denial that summer was coming to an end. Just the night before, one of my long-time boating friends announced that this would be her last weekend of boating. Her boat was going up for sale, she was giving up the club membership, and she was getting out of boating. It was a somber moment, but a reality for all of us. There is a lot of heavy lifting, maintenance, and less than perfect weather to battle as a boater. It wears on the body. In my less than scientific observation, I have noticed that people usually face this decision in their mid-to-late seventies. For the first time in my life, it occurred to me that there was a timeline. I don’t have many regrets in life, and a bigger boat, more time off or more money would not make my life on the water better. Don’t get me wrong, the extra amenities are nice! But for me, it is all about the smell of the ocean, the tranquility of the wind in my hair, and the feeling of the sun on my face. It had never crossed my mind that one day, I wouldn’t be boating. It got me thinking, was there some way to preserve my memories for when I was no longer boating? I am a live-in-the-moment, make-the-most-of-each-day, take-a-big-bite-out-of-life kind of person. When I decided to get 54

into boating, I didn’t wait until I could find the perfect boat. I found the perfect for right now boat and I got out on the water. What John Lennon said is true, “Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans.” Along the way, I have taken lots of photos, but memories are more than just pictures; there is a feeling that goes with it. That is what I want to capture. My friend was leaving boating, and the reality was that we could never re-create this exact moment again. All of us gathered on the dock, a perfect morning with our boats as the backdrop. All we could do is hold on to it. It may sound like a bit of a mid-life reminiscing, but it affirms what I have always believed. For me, the secret lies in genuinely living in the moment while it is happening. It can’t last forever and nor should it. Recognize the present and revel in it. I will return to that mimosa moment for years to come, captured like time in a bottle. Just thinking that reminded me of Jim Croce’s iconic song. Then I had to laugh because, even though I knew all the words by heart, the first time I heard the song was on The Muppet Show. That’s the thing about memories. Missy grew up boating with her family in the Gulf Islands. She works for a yacht services company based in Vancouver, B.C. and boats most weekends from April to October. A self-proclaimed weekend warrior, she enjoys blogging about everything cool for women who boat at missygoesboating.com.

Tight Lines By Mark Yuasa

Trick or Treat! This time of year, many start lamenting over the fact that it’s October. After all, it’s a time when summer is a distant memory, daylight hours are waning, and Halloween and Christmas swag are appearing on store shelves. But, it also equates to local marine waterways still teeming with autumn fishing opportunities! Let’s start off with the upcoming winter Dungeness crab season as we should hear from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) very soon. “We know we’ll have winter Dungeness crab fisheries in Puget Sound, but the big question is where they’ll occur,” said Don Velasquez, a WDFW Puget Sound shellfish manager. “If we have enough data from angler summer catch record cards to support a winter fishery, then just like in past years, we’ll likely open it between Oct. 1 and 7.” One place guaranteed to have a winter crab season is the San Juan Islands, as the summer fishery never achieves the state’s share of the recreational total allowable catch. In recent years, the winter fisheries happened in the northern waters, from the Apple Cove Point-Edwards Point line north into the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and are usually open daily through Dec. 31. Crab populations in southern reaches of Puget Sound were either in poor health or attained their share of the catch in the summer. In 2019, the summer and winter Puget Sound sport Dungeness crab fishery landed 1,660,752 pounds (compared to 1,585,956 in 2018 and 1,764,633 in 2017). Summer generates the highest participation level with an average of 192,798 catch cards issued compared to 23,578 during the winter fishery. “In general, there was definitely a lot of interest this past summer,” Velasquez said. Despite lower turnout during the winter, Dungeness crabs are highly sought after for their firm meat for holiday feasts. Winter catch rates are often better, and it keeps folks busy when other saltwater 56

fishing options are minimal. For updates visit https://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/shellfishing-regulations/crab. The salmon fishing season isn’t over just yet with some decent opportunities for coho, known as “silvers” for their shiny chrome bodies. The front end of the migratory run started to appear in Puget Sound during early Sept. and usually provides decent action through Oct. In central Puget Sound, try from Kingston south to northern tip of Vashon Island, which is open for silvers through Nov. 15; south-central Puget Sound from Vashon Island south to Narrows Bridge open until Oct. 31; Hood Canal open until Nov. 30; and the Dungeness Bay terminal fishery open through Oct. 31. Southern Puget Sound remains open year-round for hatchery coho or hatchery Chinook only. Down on the coast, the eastern portion of Grays Harbor is open through Nov. 30 and generates some of the largest silvers in our state with good fishing right up to Thanksgiving. In eastern Washington, the Hanford Reach area is open until Oct. 15 for a last chance at fall Chinook in the longest free-flowing stretch of water—50 miles between Columbia River dams. Before heading out check the WDFW regulation pamphlet, app, or website https://wdfw.wa.gov/. I like to say October is definitely not a trick, but more a like treat with the sweet reward being a fresh Dungeness crab or chrome-bright salmon! On Watch A column by Peter Schrappen

Quality Over Quantity Back in 2010 when I started at Northwest Marine Trade Association (NMTA), I was asked by a former colleague, “Recreational boating business, huh, so who are your legislative champions?” That question stood out then and continues to gnaw at me now all these years later. After all, that’s what it’s all about. Lawmakers who have your back when the doors are closed and the dog and cat fights over the budget ensues. I’ve learned that it’s all about relationships and turning swing votes into consistent support over time. In speaking this past June with Jeff Angers, the head of the Center of Sportfishing Policy, I asked, “How has COVID changed how you advocate for recreational fishing?” He responded immediately with an incredible insight. “Peter,” he explained, “relationships are more important than ever, and yet it’s harder than ever to build relationships that did not exist before COVID.” Wow, that sounds like the making of a column to me. I parked that thought in my head and then came upon this gem from the Harvard Business Review entitled, “The implications of working without an office.” In this study, the authors found that communication went up 40% when coworkers had strong ties and just 10% with weak ties. This got me thinking, “What am I doing to communicate with my strong ties to build even stronger relationships especially as it relates to improved marine business, boating, and recreational fishing policies?” As this self-reflection was ruminating, the deadline to make the Political Action Committee (PAC) contributions to our friendly lawmakers approached. These dollars derive from National Marine Trade Association (NMTA) members and are ultimately decided on by the members who participate in this committee. The group puts a tremendous amount of faith in my recommendations, so I constantly question if I’m doing everything I can to ensure that this money is invested wisely. 58

In the past, I’ve spread out the money like peanut butter; $200 contributions here and $250 there. By doing it this way, I avoid the harder decisions of saying, “No” to lawmakers who might be good with supporting our issues, but not great. But this year, with a new approach to build stronger relationships with a few rather than middling relationships with the many, I looked at making the maximum $1,000 contribution per election (that’s $1,000 for the primary and $1,000 for the general) in a bipartisan, bicameral manner. Speaking of relationships, I am particularly interested in the senate race for the 5th Legislative District that includes Issaquah and surroundings. You may remember that Senator Dino Rossi held this seat before his attempts at higher office. Now, the district has swung to the left in grand fashion, as the Republicans didn’t even file a candidate to run. What’s the big deal? Senator Mark Mullet, one of the few business owners on the Democratic side, is in a tight race with a fellow Democrat Ingrid Anderson, who is tacking to the progressive left. Governor Jay Inslee has endorsed Senator Mullet’s opponent. This race is especially tough for me. I personally like Senator Mullet. He always takes my meeting requests and is genuinely interested in business and boating issues. Unfortunately, however, he’s not as strong as his other colleagues on recreational fishing issues. Plus, the hundreds of thousands of dollars going back and forth between the two candidates means one thing to me: It’s easier and more strategic to just sit this race out. Again, we shall see how this strategy plays out over time. Peter Schrappen is Northwest Marine Trade Association’s Government Affairs Director and the Clean Boating Foundation’s Executive Director. Additionally, he serves on the boards of the Boating Safety Advisory Council, Washington Boating Alliance, and U.S. Superyacht Association.

Launch Ramps: Youth Sailing Local boating community leaders have been exploring the need to increase the diversity, equity, and inclusion of all sailors and power boaters on our waters. As I heard someone recently say, “Boating here is pretty darn white.” Everyone agrees this is an important topic, for a variety of reasons. So, our discussions have now turned on how to make this happen. Just like with boats, new boaters need “launch ramps” where they can easily access our waters. We’ve come to the conclusion that if sailing is going to diversify, it’s going to happen at the youth level. Andrew Nelson is Youth Sailing Director at The Sailing Foundation, a local organization whose mission it is to support the growth of sailing in the Pacific Northwest and where I serve on the Board of Directors. As a 501(c)3 non-profit, The Sailing Foundation augments the good work currently being done by local sailing programs and organizations, all in an effort to grow the sport. “We can learn from what other sports like golf, lacrosse, and rowing have done,” Nelson explains when describing The Sailing Foundation’s Youth Sailing Initiative efforts. “They’ve made major inroads in diversity by focusing at the youth level. Making these sports part of high school athletics is a big reason for that. When these become school sports, they cast a much larger net.” Quite simply, making these sports available to ALL students at a local high school increases access to the sport by those that might not otherwise be exposed to it or have equity of access. That leads to diversity of participation. The Sailing Foundation supports youth sailing, including high school sailing, by employing Nelson as a coach and mentor to youth 60

sailing programs throughout the Pacific Northwest at no cost to those programs. One of the big challenges of boating inclusion is the expense involved. To address this, The Sailing Foundation offers youth sailing scholarships. “A key part of our mission is to provide more access points to the sport of sailing,” Nelson explains. “We are working with existing sailing centers and yacht clubs to expand their beginner’s programs, and point the general public in their direction. It’s believed that a big reason people never start sailing is because the pathway isn’t always clearly marked.” The Sailing Foundation continues to award scholarships so that girls and boys enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program can get on the water. “Our outreach focusses on breaking down barriers and making sailing more visible to potential new sailors,” he adds. “We are broadening our net with our work in the high school sailing programs. It takes time, and those other sports still have a long way to go too, but we’re at least trying to create an environment where it can happen.” Community sailing programs, such as Sail Sand Point, The Center for Wooden Boats, and the Northwest Maritime Center are also key players in increasing access to boating in our area. Ask Nigel By Nigel Barron

Winterizing Your Boat Fall boating can be amazing. If you’re up for the cooler weather, you look forward to boating every fall. If you’re a sailor, the wind is generally better in the fall, and the crowds from summer are gone. However, as warmer weather and daylight start to wane, people start putting their boats away. This time of year, I get many boaters asking, “What do I need to do to put my boat to bed?” As always, there are different answers based on whether you have a sailboat or powerboat. However, there are many common tasks required for both. The biggest wintertime concern is the humidity. Keeping things clean and dry is imperative. For a sailboat, you’ll want to store the sails and remember to remove as much of the line as possible to clean and store it. This is also a good time to inspect your sails. Does the UV patch on the jib look worn? Is there stitching that needs attention? Are there any small punctures or tears? If you answer, “yes” to any of these questions, now is a great time to visit your sailmaker, who is also entering the slow season. On a race boat, we run a dehumidifier year-round. And in the winter, we add an oil-filled radiator to the mix. Dehumidifiers serve double duty as they keep the humidity down and they also keep the air moving around. I’m not a big fan of the AC heaters with the built-in fans, as there are just too many moving parts. The dehumidifier with the radiator easily moves the air and heat around. In an ideal world, you could have a dehumidifier set up on a countertop with a drain hose set up to run continuously (so that way you don’t have to make frequent visits to the boat to empty the bucket). Remember to pay attention to the number of heaters that are running relative to your shore power. If you can, remove as much of the soft goods from your boat as possible. I always say that a clean boat is a happy boat. Make sure the bilges are dry and cupboards are bare. Wipe down all the boat’s surfaces and take the time to close some thru hulls. If you are closing 62

some critical thru hulls, however, use a piece of tape to write yourself a reminder so it’s not a problem you’re dealing with come spring. This is also a great time to check your mooring lines for wear and tear and consider adding that extra inter spring line. I also like to give the boat a good “push test” when we leave her to make sure that, whichever direction the wind is coming from, the boat stays completely put. In the June edition of Northwest Yachting, I wrote about fuel in the tanks and filling up on fuel when it’s cheap. A lot of the advice from that particular column holds true as you plan for winter. If you don’t think you’ll run the boat at least once a month, think about adding a fuel stabilizer or fuel storage solutions, and leave the tanks as full as possible. An oil change is a good idea before winter, as you are running clean and fresh lubricant through the engine. If you have an outboard hanging on rail, don’t forget about fogging and winterizing that as well. Think about your water tanks and other things that could freeze. There is antifreeze made specifically for potable tanks. Empty the water tanks, pour in the antifreeze, and run each faucet until you get a little to come out. If you can, drain the water from the engine and flush it. Puget Sound area waters don’t get much colder in the winter, so it can act as a good insulator for our boats and prevent damage from a deep freeze. Around here, there is little risk to the systems, but this is 2020. Anything can happen! Nigel Barron was born in England and developed his sea legs at an early age. ZIN BOATS 64

THE ELECTRIC EVOLUTION BY SCHELLEEN RATHKOPF

65

66

WHAT IF SOMEONE CHALLENGED YOU TO TRAVEL 80100 NAUTICAL MILES ON A BOAT FOR ONLY SIX BUCKS? OH, AND THE BOAT ALSO HAD TO HAVE A TOP CRUISING SPEED OF 35 MPH (56 KPH). WOULD YOU DISMISS THE DARE AS IMPOSSIBLE? YOU MIGHT AND YOU WOULDN’T BE ALONE. Thanks to the ingenuity of Piotr Zin, the mastermind behind Zin Boats in Seattle, you can do the impossible and he’s here to tell you how. He calls it the “Electric Evolution” and he is eager to take you for a ride on his new electric boats; the Z2T Tender and the Z2R Runabout. To Zin, putting electric boats on large yachts is the way of the future - and he may just be on to something. Go Green – Go Fast! “Growing up, I was very privileged to have access to pritine lakes, rivers, and seas,” Zin explains. “I wanted to design a boat to help preserve the natural beauty of water, but to do it without compromising the fun part of boating – the speed!” Zin set out to create an electric boat that could perform better than its gas equivalents and one that would preserve the delicate natural resources for future generations. With the support of investors, a small but hard-working team, and an amazing group of suppliers, the 42-year old Zin started work on building the perfect tender and runabout when his son was born two years ago. Since that time, he’s created a boat that is lightweight, environmentally friendly, easy to maintain, and is believed by many to be the next big thing in boating. Battery Power Zin boats use the BMW i3 electric car’s 40.5 KW battery and are designed to travel up to 100 miles when fully charged. Unlike with electric cars, there are no special charging stations required to charge the boat battery. Any dock, boat garage,

marina, or yacht with a plug or power source will do. With the typical 240V and 50A circuit, the boat will be fully recharged in about five hours. Using a regular 120V 30A circuit, that time is about double. A typical top-off for the battery is just 1-2 hours, giving you an additional 20-30 miles. So theoretically, you could leave your large yacht, take the Zin for a spin to the beach (yes, she can be beached), out for some waterskiing, and a visit to shore, and be gone all day before returning to your yacht. Then you’d plug her back in for the night. Amazing. Measuring just how far you can go is a similar gauge to a gas engine: it depends on the speed. If you go about 5-7 mph (8-12kph), the range is over 120 miles (193km). At a typical cruise speed of 10-12mph (16-20kph) you’ll get about 80-100 miles (128-160km) range. But don’t worry about tracking your mileage. The Zin boat is your friend in that regard and is programmed with warning signals that alert you with available ranges and speeds to avoid running out of power. How is this even possible?! The simple answer for those of us who are not battery experts: carbon fiber. Everything down to the cap on the battery console is made of carbon fiber, which gives the boat incredible strength without the weight. The model Z2R Runabout and Z2T Tender are both under 2,000 pounds! “I’m absolutely obsessed with how light this boat is and its strength,” Zin says of his designs. “The boat planes fully at 8.5 mph and the wake is flat.” Zero Maintenance At this point, you may be asking, “What’s the catch here as it 67

“I WANTED TO DEVELOP A GREEN BOAT BUT DIDN’T WANT TO SACRIFICE PERFORMANCE BECAUSE I REALLY LIKE GOING FAST.” PIOTR ZIN, ZIN BOATS

68

is all sounding too good to be true” and you may even be searching for the maintenance manual to convince you that this boat requires a ton of extra TLC or something. Well, you’d be wrong. “Wash it once in a while and keep it charged,” is the extent of the maintenance section. The battery can manage 10,000 cycles, so it will last about 27.3 years if you use the boat every day. I am not kidding! Operating a Zin Boat comes down to a single touch screen onboard that manages everything. There are no buttons, switches, or added gadgets, making it extremely easy to operate. There are also no tanks to polish, gas lines to clear, or fuel leak pads required. So unless you love working on engines and don’t mind showing up for cocktail hour with oil skids on your shirt, you will absolutely love how easy and clean the Zin boat is to handle and maintain, allowing your TLC to be directed elsewhere. Piotr Zin loves this part. “There’s no maintenance and I mean ZERO,” he says with a smile. “Just plug it when not in use.” Seattle Tech and Boat Savvy For Zin, going electric just makes all the sense in the world and is the way of the future for tenders and runabouts. Though he doesn’t own a Tesla, he does have other electric toys in his garage including electric sailboats, bikes, and even an electric SUP. He settled in on Seattle because of it’s not only a tech center, but because of the Pacific Northwest’s boat building traditions. “Places like LUDD and Delta have been delivering fantastic craftsmanship and quality for years,” Zin says. “Plus, the pool of talent here is amazing. Zin Boats is part boat builder and part technology company. Seattle is a perfect place for a startup like mine that will undoubtedly lead the electric boating industry.”

people. The open bow design of the Z2T offers up seating for 10 (yes, ten) and has all the accolades of the runabout in a sweet and easy tender package. Currently, Zin Boats is building boats for a few special clients who are using them as tenders on their larger yachts. The production versions of the boats will be arriving in early 2021. The boats are being built in the Pacific Northwest and can be delivered anywhere in the world. Piotr Zin is excited to be in the right place, at the right time, building something that is energy efficient, performance ready, easy to maintain and control, and a shell that is 100% fully customizable. “You want gold cleats,” he jokes. “Sure! No problem!” He’s confident that his electric boats are the next big thing in boating, and I, for one, agree. This guy is totally on to something and if you have $248,000, you can have it too. “This has been a rollercoaster year for us and the whole world,” Zin shares, “but I want to thank everyone involved in this project who have helped us spread the word about what we’re up to. Getting Noticed Zin Boats, though still technically a startup, is getting noticed. They have two models in the mix: the Z2T and the Z2R. There are too many reasons to list why Z2R was recently chosen as the best electric tender on the market by BOAT International. But suffice it to say that it was given this distinction because it’s super lightweight, easy to operate, beachable, trailerable and is the perfect runabout boat for up to five 69

A TIME FOR

SECLUSION, TRANQUILITY, AND SAFETY BY DEANE HISLOP

Summer has officially come and gone. As the majority of boaters in the Pacific Northwest head home for the season, this opens the waterways to those of us determined to continue our boating experiences. The off-season offers a respite as anchorages are deserted, marinas and marine park docks become our own, guest moorage rates are reduced, and no jockeying required at the fuel dock or launch ramps. The sea and wildlife are unencumbered by summer’s steady stream of boat traffic and visitors walking the park trails. The seals and otters take on an indignant “this is my cove” attitude. The weather becomes cooler and days shorter, the winds increase, and storms come frequently. For some boaters this is bad news, however, for seasoned mariners this change is welcomed with open arms. Though off-season cruising may seem unappealing to the unfamiliar, the hardy few know it offers a chance to experience 70

familiar waters in new ways. The landscape takes on a different cloak, the crowds thin out, and well-known places feel somehow different. There are few pleasures better than curling up in a warm salon with a good book on a rainy day. After Labor Day, there are fewer boats out on the water, and the trend accelerates as we move through the calendar. Most boats spend half the year idle at the dock, orphans from October through March. Just a handful of intrepid boaters enjoy the solitude and serenity of year-round boating, and if you want to be part of that bold crew, it is important to be properly prepared and practice safety first. Let the Weather Rule Check the weather before heading out. Storms occur in the fall and winter with more regularity than in the summer. For off-season

cruising, it’s important to be flexible, monitor the VHF weather channel, and review the detailed National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration weather maps. Whatever the itinerary, include extra time for weather changes so you do not put your boat and crew at risk. Even though drenching rainstorms will arrive regularly throughout the cooler months, so will those rare crystal clear and crisp winter days that we here in the Pacific Northwest truly cherish. Safety First Poor visibility due to rain or fog is more common this time of the year, and conditions can deteriorate quickly. Radar, GPS, AIS, VHF Radio, depth sounders, and a chartplotter are invaluable. Always be prepared for rough water. Secure all loose equipment on deck before getting underway. If conditions worsen, you or a crew member do not want to be on deck wrestling to tie something down. Securing everything

inside the boat is also important. In rough water, loose items can shift. Ensure that your navigation lights are in working order. With shorter days, you may get back to the dock or to the anchorage after dark. Replace burned-out bulbs and carry spares onboard. Cold temperatures shorten battery life, both in your boat’s system and in flashlights, so I suggest carrying spare batteries for all of your small electronics. Be vigilant when underway. Winter storms coupled with higher than normal tides drag driftwood off beaches and into the choppy water, making spotting logs difficult. As temperatures drop during the winter months, pay attention to slippery boat decks and docks. While we advocate wearing a Personal Floatation Device (PFD) anytime you take to the water, wearing one during the cooler months of the year is a must. Invest in some good deck shoes or boots with non-skid soles, nobody wants to slip on a wet deck. 71

Leave Word One of the joys of off-season cruising is the lack of boat traffic. There can be days when you have the water entirely to yourself. The flip side is, should you experience a breakdown or encounter an emergency, there might be no one else around to assist. The solution: Let people know where you are going. File a float plan or leave details as specific as you can, especially your time of return, with someone who will be expecting you. Include instructions such as: “If you don’t receive a call or text from me by X time, notify the authorities.” Also, with today’s electronics, you can leave plenty of digital breadcrumbs, if the boat is not equipped with an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIPB), invest in a personal locator beacon (PLB) to share your coordinates in the event of an emergency. Warm It Up For years, we had no heat source on our previous boats and managed fine during the fall and spring with the proper clothing. But for winter cruising, this approach is out of the question and a good source of heat is a number one necessity. I use a Red Dot auxiliary heater when the engine is running and the diesel furnace when swinging on the hook or tied to the dock. This keeps the cabin toasty and helps dry out wet clothing. A hydronic heating system can be plumbed through the hot water tank for instant hot water. Trust me, outdoor activities are much more pleasant if you can easily warm up inside afterwards! Self-Reliant If your only means of heat overnight is via shore power, plan ahead. Unless you’re near a major center, most marinas, fuel docks, stores, 72

and onshore amenities will be closed or only open on an abbreviated schedule. Call ahead to prevent being stuck in the middle of nowhere with nothing. Before leaving the dock ensure that all the scheduled and required maintenance and inspections have been completed on your boat. Breaking down is never any fun, but during inclement winter weather, it can easily become a very dangerous situation. Carry owner manuals onboard, along with tools, spare engine oil, filters, impellers, belts, pumps, hoses, and hose clamps should you need to make minor repairs while out on the water. Self-amalgamating tape is a handy item to have onboard. This is stretchy tape that sticks to itself, but not to what it is wrapped around and can be used to temporally repair a leaking hose. Nobody knows when an accident requiring medical attention may occur. Carry a comprehensive medical kit and know how to use it. Also carry medications for common ailments. You cannot be prepared for everything, but you can prepare for likely problems. Dealing with Moisture During the off-season, adequate ventilation is particularly important as humidity is higher, and moisture will most definitely be brought inside with open doors, windows, and wet clothing. Cooking, particularly with propane, also adds moisture to the cabin air. High humidity steams up the windows, encourages mold, and impedes wet items from drying. Cracking open a couple hatches on opposite sides of the boat will facilitate ventilation and will help reduce the humidity level. Staying Warm and Dry Temperatures fall quickly after sunset, and sunset comes early this time

of the year. Here in the Pacific Northwest the off-season months are cooler with temps ranging from 60 degrees to below freezing. Check the forecast and dress accordingly. Layering is the way to go for staying warm and dry. A coat or sweater can be removed if too warm, but you cannot add more layers if there is not an extra one onboard. A good set of rain gear is also essential. Both fleece and wool retain their warmth in damp conditions. Toss in a couple of pairs of long underwear (polypro), all-weather nylon pants and lightweight waterproof pants, jackets that fit over the fleece and wool hats. For footwear, choose wool socks (warm, absorbent, and fast drying SmartWool is a good choice), deck shoes and boots. If you’re hiking, I recommend bringing a pair of lug sole boots onboard for those wet, slippery, and muddy trails. For the hands, Polartec gloves with rubber grip palms and fingers work well.

in a house with many rooms, it may take some getting used to the close quarters on a boat. Have plenty of books, magazines, games, and puzzles so that everyone, kids especially, can entertain themselves during inclement weather. Within reason, insist that everyone get off the boat at least once a day, if only to take a short walk or a row around the cove.

Setting the Hook Good ground tackle is priceless for peace of mind if the wind kicks up. For off-season anchoring, an oversized anchor and rode are a good choice. The more remote the destination, the more prepared you should be to handle a full gale. Use the weather forecast, tide tables, and detailed charts to determine exactly where to anchor. Deploy extra scope so you and your crew will sleep better if the wind increases or changes direction. It’s always a good idea to be aware of alternative anchoring sites nearby and have a Plan B ready that will offer protection should the wind direction shift.

Last Word of Advice The first time you plan an off-season sortie, keep it short—limit it to just two or three days as a test of the endurance of you and your crew. If you, your crew, and the boat are properly equipped, with care, caution, and the proper mindset, year-round cruising will provide sights and encounters other boaters may never experience! Off-season cruising is not only good for your spirit, it’s also good for your boat. When idle, unused engines and pumps forget how to work. Condensation collects in the tanks and fuel lines. Everything gets cold and damp. By keeping your boat running through the winter months, it is much more likely to run smoothly right into spring. Now, fill your travel cups with hot cocoa, buckle on your PFD, and have some off-season fun!

Guard Against Cabin Fever The days are short, and the nights are long. If accustomed to living

Comfort Food No matter the season, keep cruising menus simple. During cooler weather months, one-pot meals, hearty stews, soups, pasta, rice dishes, and an endless supply of java and cocoa hit the spot. Root vegetables, such as potatoes and carrots, and fruits, like apples and citrus, travel well in any season and can be stowed without refrigeration in either a cooler on deck or in the lazarette.

Keeping the Corinthian Spirit Alive There is no getting away from the plain fact that the 2020 sailboat racing season has been like none other before. After a slow start, the ingenuity and flexibility of the sailing community has shone through in flying colors. All throughout the Salish Sea, sailing clubs are working with their members to sort out the best way to continue to enjoy our amazing sport. Everything from socially distant cruising rallies to shorthanded distance racing right up to crew limitation short course to weeknight series are keeping sailboat racing alive. Corinthian Yacht Club of Tacoma took on weekend racing with the Vashon Challenge hosted on August 22. Held every year since 2004, the race has become a homegrown favorite for the South Sound as a double-and single-handed race consisting of a lap of Vashon Island. The race has an ambitious time limit of ten hours, but all the same, eight boats came out on the water to try their hand at the mid-summer race. The light air affair made it a tough go, but nearly the whole fleet ghosted their way through the waters and had a fantastic day on the water with smiles all around. The Antrim 27 Goes To 11 took home the win in the double-handed division, while the Olson 30 Special Purpose took the single-handed and overall corrected time win for the day. Sloop Tavern Yacht Club is keeping the flame lit by hosting the final series of their now legendary Ballard Cup Monday night racing and welcoming all comers. Crew limited to five sailors keeps things distant but competitive with over 70 boats taking to the water each week. If it weren’t for the short-handed crews, abundance of masks, and lack of rowdy bar flies after racing you would never guess it was any other summer. As the spray from the last series of races settled, hometown hero and one of the masterminds behind Ballard Sails, Alex Simanis, and his crew on Poke and Destroy took home the series overall win. Looking to what the future might hold these days is a bit like trying to pick a lottery number. But without plans, then nothing would happen, and things are forging forward into the fall. Normally one of the busier times of year for racers, this year looks to be right on track, albeit with a few modern caveats.

Corinthian Yacht Club of Seattle is slated to host the annual Puget Sound Sailing Championship, known simply as PSSC on October 10th and 11th. The event is to adhere to the club’s new crew limitations where boats under thirty feet are limited to three crew, under forty feet to four crew, and over forty feet are to sail with five crew. This year’s event is truncated somewhat, CYC is inviting all fleets to come out for only one weekend of racing rather than the traditional split with big and small boat weekends along with cancellation of shoreside activities. This is a great time to get out on the water on smaller boats and expect to see a large dinghy contingent and well-represented J/105 and J/80 fleets take to the water. On somewhat of a literal housekeeping note, the Corinthian Yacht Club of Seattle’s clubhouse is currently out of the water undergoing its 25-year service along with some aesthetic touchups to bring us into the next decade. The club is weathering the viral storm extremely well with reduced junior sailing classes, along with limited crew weeknight racing. Membership in the club has increased over the past months and with some very disaster-proof plans being laid down, things are looking bright for what continues to be the cornerstone of Northwest racing. Corinthian Yacht Club of Edmonds is pushing forward with their one-day event of Foulweather Bluff, welcoming larger boats to a rip around the North Sound on October 3rd. The traditional course takes the fleet from Edmonds to Foulweather Bluff with options to shorten the course as wind and tide allows. This is slated to be one of the first races in the Seattle area for several of the larger racing boats, and excitement is building as there has been limited safe opportunities for these boats to sail together over the summer. The Corinthian Spirit is alive and well, and the club is making the right moves it needs to in order to adapt and overcome the new obstacles and challenges. This past summer showed the resilience of sailing—both as a sport and as a community.

Ports of Call BY DEANE HISLOP

A Central Puget Sound City with a Small-Town Feel DES MOINES, WASHINGTON

The city of Des Moines is located on the eastern shoreline of Puget Sound’s East Passage in the shadow of Mt. Rainier. Despite being just 17 miles south of downtown Seattle and 12 miles north of Tacoma, Des Moines has retained its small-town atmosphere and provides all the services necessary for boaters who pay a visit via the waterways. The entrance channel begins south of a green Buoy #1, located west of the north end of the breakwater, and southwest of the public fishing pier. The 13-foot deep channel at zero tide doglegs to starboard into the marina basin. Immediately on the portside is the fuel float and 1,500-feet of well-maintained guest slips and linear moorage for vessels up to 100 feet. Visiting boaters are asked to check in at the fuel dock for their slip assignment. Des Moines Marina offers some of the most competitive prices on Puget Sound, and therefore, it’s not uncommon for visiting boaters to fill up their fuel tanks during their stay. Visiting yacht club members with reciprocal privileges will find the Des Moines Yacht Club dock in the southern end of the marina. This is a full-service marina with a CSR Marine boatyard onsite that supplies a Travelift for haulouts up to 25 tons. You’ll be in good hands if you need any boat repairs or parts. The marina is a perfect location to relax in the sun on the flybridge or in the cockpit. At high tide, Point Robinson lighthouse and the majestic Olympic Mountains come into view over the breakwater. In the evening, visitors are treated to spectacular sunsets that silhouette the surrounding mountains. To the Beach Immediately north of the marina, Des Moines Creek flows through the 20-acre Des Moines Beach Park before emptying into Puget Sound. The park and beach are favorite spots for locals and visitors alike, with community activities and celebrations happening throughout the year. For hundreds of years, Duwamish and Muckleshoot Native American tribes made a permanent camp at this location because of the abundant supply of freshwater, seals, fish, and shellfish. Settlers from Des Moines, Iowa, in the mid-1800s built a sawmill in this location because of the abundance of cedar, hemlock, and fir trees in the area. In the early 1930s, the Swedish Covenant Church converted the old mill site into a summer bible study camp, which operated until 1986. 78

That same year, the 20-acre park valley, the buildings (some dating back to the early days of Des Moines), and 630 feet of beachfront property was sold to the city. In 1988, Covenant Beach Historic District was placed on the Washington State Register of Historic Places. Then in January 2006, Covenant Beach Bible Camp was also listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Many of the buildings have been beautifully restored and now serve as a community event center and the site of many of festivals and celebrations. The southern head of the Des Moines Creek Trail is in the park. The 2.1-mile paved trail follows the creek north to 200th street, near SeaTac airport. The trail winds through the forest following the creek, and the soft sounds of flowing water offers soothing comfort. In the summer, ripe Himalayan blackberries line portions of the trail. The Village The city has worked hard to retain its early small-town charm and seaside connection. Signs of this can be seen in the names of some of the establishments, such as the Quarterdeck, Lighthouse Lounge, Wally’s Chowder, and Marina Inn. There is also a cool sculpture of a happy angler and larger than life salmon called “Big Catch” located at the northern entrance of town. This quaint beachfront community is home to a variety of unique eateries, artistic sculptures, espresso stands, boutiques, banks, thrift store, glass studio and gift, ice cream and dive shops. Three blocks from the marina is ABC grocery for provisioning. Quilters love Carriage Country Quilts, which features hand-dyed wool, fabrics, patterns, quilt kits, and books. The knitter on board will also enjoy the Yarn Shop. If in need of something for the barbeque, I suggest visiting B&E Meats. It is the next best thing to heaven for grill masters, offering a variety of fresh meats and seafoods, rubs, sauces, and seasonings. I also suggest trying the teriyaki beef tri-tips, Kalbi-marinated beef ribs, award winning beef jerky, or the delicious smoked salmon candy. Time your Visit Community festivals and celebrations happen year-round, but a favorite is the Des Moines Farmers Market, which begins in June. In July, visitors can enjoy the Waterland Festival & Parade, the Beach Park Summer Concerts, and the Poverty Bay Blues & Brews festival. Visit www.tothebeachwa.com to learn more.

Gastronomy With choices from fast food to sit-down dining, Des Moines has something to suit every crew member’s palate. Begin your day with a fresh cup of coffee or espresso from the convenient Quarterdeck, located at the top of the guest dock ramp. Enjoy the day on the deck or in the Quarterdeck courtyard overlooking the marina with a glass of wine or one of the local beers or ciders on tap. For seafood lovers, the two-story Anthony’s Homeport is in the marina’s south parking lot. On the first level is an oyster bar and grill. The second level houses the cocktail lounge and restaurant. Both levels offer outside dining when weather permits. Red Robin is located just two blocks east of the southern entrance of the marina,

and there are Mexican, Thai, Chinese, pizza, and hot dog eateries. If you’re hungry for clam chowder and fish n’ chips, Wally’s Chowder House is a Des Moines landmark. This is a popular spot, so expect a wait— but it’s worth every minute! Moorage Contact the City of Des Moines Marina at desmoinesmarina.com or (206) 824-5700. The marina provides gas, diesel, propane, water, 30-amp power, pumpout, restrooms, showers, Wi-Fi, courtesy shuttle, and a 25’ x 80’ canvas covered activity float with drop curtains, grills, picnic tables, and infrared heaters. Reservations are accepted for boats 32 feet and larger, with a minimum of one week in advance. 79
