Editor’s Note: After publication of our feature on the effort to restore the ASUW Shell House (which you can now find on nwyachting.com), I shared a delightful exchange with reader Sally Harper. Her father worked for legendary shell builder George Pocock and she shared her memories of meeting the man himself at the Shell House in the summer of 1961; additionally, here is her very interesting recollection of an early racing prototype crafted from fiberglass! “Another interesting thing is that Pocock was already experimenting with fiberglass that summer (1961) because I remember my father making a big deal about showing us the “first fiberglass shell in the world” in the Canoe House. And he put my older sister, age 12, in the brand new fiberglass shell one day and let her row over to the Arboretum a little ways in it. This all occurred from the ramp on the Cut and up from the Canoe House... It was not a 4- or an 8-person shell, it was definitely a prototype of some sort. Anyway,

[ A MOMENT IN THE SUN ]

Father-Son Team Completes First Solar-Powered Voyage to Alaska

After more than 15 years of planning and experimentation, Captain Alex Borton and his father David completed a 44-day trip from Bellingham, WA, to Southeast Alaska in a vessel powered entirely by the sun. The trip began on May 25, covering 1,216 nautical miles (1,400 statute miles) through the Inside Passage, stopping at Ketchikan and Glacier Bay, Alaska, before finally docking in Juneau on July 8. Near the end of the trip, Alex Borton was able to meet up with his son Kai making the journey a three-generation endeavor. This feat is thought to be the only voyage on that route made entirely without wind, fossil fuel, or human power. The modest cabin cruiser, named Wayward Sun, is equipped with 10 flexible Solbian solar panels on its roof, which covers most of the boat’s 27-foot length. The 1,700-watt array produces enough energy to run a Torqeedo Cruise 4.0 electric pod drive, as well as a separate 12-volt system for lights and navigation equipment. Being solar-powered, the boat maintains a stately pace of 2 to 5 knots and produces no carbon

emissions, exhaust fumes, and engine noise. During the voyage’s duration, it did not require maintenance. Wayward Sun was custom-made by Olympia-based Devlin Designing Boat Builders, using a stitch-and-glue process that produced a smooth, “slippery” hull, the company said, to ensure as little friction as possible for the lightly powered vessel. Alex and David Borton are also the founders of Solar Sal Boats, which is working on the release of its first production line of sun-powered commercial vessels. Now that Devlin’s prototype for the Alaska trip has proven successful, Solar Sal hopes to debut its own fiberglass-hulled Solar Sal 24 model before the end of 2021. For more on Wayward Sun’s journey, visit the Bortons’ blog: solarsaljourney.squarespace.com; information on Solar Sal Boats can be found at: solarsal.solar. (Also check out NWY’s earlier reporting on the company in the June and September issues of 2019, available at: issuu.com/nwyachting.)

[ MOVING MARITIME FORWARD ]

Seattle Terminal 46 to Be New Site for Longshore Training Facility At a time when increased cargo volume has created serious traffic congestion at the Port of Seattle, the Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) announced this summer that it would approve the final lease for a new Terminal 46 training facility for longshore workers. The new maritime labor training center, to be located just west of the SoDo stadiums on Seattle’s waterfront, will be run by the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA). NWSA, which manages the various bulk cargo terminals in Seattle and Tacoma, said longshore workers in the region annually move millions of tons of container and breakbulk cargo, which requires highly skilled training. The 10-year facility lease secured by PMA will ensure that new maritime workers will be well-versed in efficient and safe movement of goods in this vital Puget Sound industry, said Seattle Port Commissioner and NWSA Managing Member Stephanie Bowman. Currently, PMA operates a training facility at Terminal 5 on the Duwamish Waterway, which is nearing the end of Phase One of its modernization project. As the Terminal 5 project construction continues, PMA will need to move its training center across Elliott Bay to Terminal 46, where the existing Crane 80 will be used for instructional purposes. “This facility and its dedicated crane will help ensure that we maintain a skilled workforce to keep our port terminals thriving and accommodate the historic cargo surge that is impacting our entire supply chain,” said Nairobi Russ, the PMA’s Northwest Area Director. Year-to-date volumes for 2021, NWSA added, improved 18.2% to nearly 2.17 million TEUs, with full imports seeing almost 30% growth and full exports declining by 11.5%. For more information on the new training facility, go to: nwseaportalliance.com.

Seattle’s Buchan and Rose Inducted into Sailing Hall of Fame

Two Corinthian Yacht Club members—William “Carl” Buchan and Richard “Dick” Rose—will be among the 11 inductees in the 2021 Class at this month’s National Sailing Hall of Fame celebration. Many times a championship sailor, Carl Buchan is an Olympic gold medal winner and a defender of the America’s Cup race with Dennis Connor’s team—one of only two sailors who have accomplished both feats—the other being fellow Sailing HOF member, Buddy Melges. The son of another HOF inductee, Carl and his father Bill Buchan each won gold in different classes (Star Class for Bill; Flying Dutchman Class for Carl) at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. After watching Bill competing in the 1974 America’s Cup defense trials, 17-year-old Carl won the U.S. Singlehanded Championship for the O’Day Trophy that same year and took home the World Singlehanded Youth Championship in 1975. Buchan also won the U.S. Nationals three times (1978, 1980, 2000) and the North American Championship in 1992. Dick Rose, who has been a member of World Sailing’s Racing Rules of Sailing Committee for 30 years, is considered the undisputed international authority on the racing rules. For his vast knowledge, Rose was awarded the Nathanael Greene Herreshoff Trophy in 2012, considered U.S. Sailing’s highest honor. He has also served as the U.S. Olympic Sailing Team rules advisor in the 1984, 1988, and 1992 games. After sailing dinghies while growing up on Manhasset Bay, Long Island, Rose led his Princeton University team to second place in the Intercollegiate National Championship in 1960. At age 24, he won the Long Island Sound Frostbite Championship in 1963, upsetting the famed Arthur Knapp, Jr. As one of the first sailors to embrace the new Laser Class when it first appeared in 1971, Rose was already a standout in several other classes including Penguins, Lightnings, Snipes, and International 14s. On Oct. 16, the new members will be celebrated at the Induction Ceremony in Newport, Rhode Island, representing the 11th year that such distinguished sailors have been added to the Hall. Buchan, Rose, and the other ninemembers of the Class of 2021 will join 90 current Hall of Famers, all of whom will be featured in the Legends of Sailing exhibition at new The Sailing Museum, which is scheduled to open in May 2022 in Newport. [ MORE MOORAGE FOR BOATERS ]

Washington State Nears Completion of Puget Sound Buoy Repair Project

Over the last three months, Washington state has been working to replace several of the region’s public mooring buoys that have been either damaged or made inoperable. In mid-July, the program began its buoy repair work on about 60 buoys in the San Juan Islands and have since worked their way south through public mooring locations in Puget Sound. After completing an assessment of the condition of all 256 saltwater mooring buoys in the Sound, the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission identified 203 that were in need of repair and another 53 that were unserviceable. The goal, the state parks commission said, is to have the entire system replaced or repaired with new anchors by the end of this fall season. Any buoys that cannot be repaired will be included in a future effort to fully replace destroyed buoys, said the State Parks, which will explore additional efforts to improve necessary tie-up capacity for vessels, as well. Washington State Parks has the largest state-managed mooring system in the country and its staff is collaborating with groups, such as the Recreational Boating Association of Washington and First Nations tribal governments, to improve moorage opportunities in the region this year. State Parks is planning to conduct biennial inspections of its buoys as part of a new five-year contract with Jen Jay, Inc., a Puget Sound commercial diving and environmental consulting company. Project workers are taking care to protect sensitive eelgrass habitats from anchor impact. Each buoy is designed for a single vessel up to 45 feet in length. Boaters cannot raft or tie multiple boats together when using mooring buoys. As the last of the buoy project wraps up this fall, State Parks encouraged boaters to be cautious operating near any remaining repair divers in the South Sound area and to give the buoy locations a wide berth until the work is done. For more information on the results of the mooring buoy repair work, please visit the State Parks’ website at: parks.state.wa.us/648/Moorage.

With warm, wood-paneled walls accented by mounted fish decor, Bait Shop exudes a friendly, Midwest-vibe and excels in crispy, beer-battered fish sammies, classic cod and hand-cut chips, and a selection of cheekily named cocktails that includes the Catch of the Day, a seasonally changing frozen beverage. There are always locally brewed drafts on tap and the Captain’s List of premium hard liquor to choose from. Water rolls off your back with the Kahana shirt If you love the water, you need a shirt that hates it: The Kahana hydrophobic shirt from Hawaii-based Bluesmiths. Made with a water-repellant fabric called NanoSphere, the Kahana is comfortable and breathable, but keeps moisture away from your skin, providing protection for those days when wind and sea-spray can chill you to the bone. When you don’t mind getting wet from activities like paddleboarding, windsurfing, or kayaking, the clothing dries quickly and stays dry longer than conventional shirts. Available in a wide assortment of colors and sizes, the Kahana is also well suited as a base layer for land-based fun in all types of weather, such as mountain biking, hiking, skiing, and snowboarding. $95 // bluesmiths.com

Help protect steelhead habitat with RepYourWater hat Northwest boaters and anglers can help protect precious habitat for Washington’s state fish, the steelhead, with this comfy cap from RepYourWater, an apparel brand dedicated to supporting conservations efforts. Featuring a “Wild Steel” logo over the state outline, the “coastal green” cotton twill and forest-green mesh will gradually fade with use, giving it a unique vintage look after repeated fishing trips. The cap is adjustable with a snap-back and comes with a pre-curved bill, so some fans of former Mariner coach Lou Piniella may object. More importantly, 3% of every sale goes to support the Seattle-based Wild Steelhead Coalition, which is dedicated to increasing the return of wild steelhead to the waters of the West Coast. $27 // repyourwater.com 35

Targa 27.2 The sea never rests, and neither will the new Targa 27.2 from Cardinal Yacht Sales, renowned for its exceptional seaworthiness and unparalleled build quality. Smartly furnished; roomy and comfortable; versatile by design, precision crafted from bow to stern—Finland’s finest, Botnia Marin, introduces the latest in its venerable Targa line, the Targa 27.2. Launched at the Helsinki International Boat Show in February, the third-generation Targa 27.2 sets a new course for the series, while retaining the stable structure and superb offshore performance of previous models. Several decades after its first launch, Targa continues to inspire boat lovers everywhere to dream of open waters and memorable voyages. Make your custom selections and the bespoke 27.2 is finished to your wishes, from the hull color, interior upholstery, and fittings to the navigational system and pantry equipment. 38

The compact, muscular 27.2 comes with more space than its 27.1 predecessor—5” longer and nearly 3” wider abeam. It also comes with an optional flybridge, plus a larger head compartment, forward and below the helm. The 27.2 roomier pilothouse provides access to passageways on both sides with two sliding doors. Inside there are six seats, which can face forward or be turned around toward the aft salon for gatherings and meals around the foldable table. The helm chair can be pushed back and the wheel tilted forward to allow for standing operation, with clear views of analog instrumentation above the windshield. On the port side is a small galley with a refrigerator under the helm, smart storage drawers

for tableware, a small fresh-water sink, and a two-burner stove that can be ingeniously hidden under a fold-down wooden countertop when not on use. Open a foldable hatch under the pilothouse bench seat to access the aft double-berth layout with two pipe berths. The cabin quarters can accommodate up to four people for trips on the water. In another efficient use of space, storage compartments and a wardrobe are located beneath the stairs. The foredeck cockpit features outdoor U-shaped seating for comfortable entertaining, located above handy storage lockers, one of which stores a retractable wooden table. At the stern is a wide swim platform accessed by a ladder, as well as seating atop more storage lockers. From the self-draining aft deck, three ladder stairs bring you up to the open-air flybridge, with a passenger seat, helm chair, and 360-degree views to make steering a little easier.

And then there’s the “hull of fame” that ensures seaworthiness and safety in open-water swells and whitecaps, while that aforementioned larger beam improves handling and comfort. Power for the 27.2 comes from one of three inboard Volvo Penta diesel engine options, the D6-330, D6-370, or D6-400, all easily accessible through a hatch near the stern. The estimated top speed with the 400-hp Penta is nearly 40 knots, with a cruising speed of 23-30 knots. At any speed, the 27.2 provides rapid acceleration, total control in tight turns, and a smooth overall ride. That ride is so smooth that the experts at Cardinal Yacht Sales say that fall and winter are actually the best times to come take a test ride and be impressed by this boat’s ability in even the most adverse conditions.

The main salon features an L-shaped settee with a teak hi-lo table, custom upholstery and drapes, mini-blinds, halogen lighting, two side chairs on the port side, and an entertainment center to starboard. For refreshments, the salon has an additional custom holding plate freezer cabinet aft. Steps on the starboard side head up to the well-appointed pilothouse, featuring a Stidd helm chair, a matching leather L-shaped settee, and sliding doors to access both side decks and steps leading to the flybridge deck. The electronics package includes a Garmin 3000 GPS, a color chart plotter, Northstar GPS, Icom ICM127 and ICM45 VHF’s Furuno FR7061 radar with a 14” monitor, a Simrad speed/log/depth unit, Robertson wind direction/speed indicator, autopilot, a bow thruster, and Naiad stabilizers. The helm also features a video camera display looking aft and in the engine room, to keep tabs on the twin Caterpillar 435-hp engines that give Lady Diane a top speed of 17 knots. 40

LIFE SPEED HARDER, BETTER, FASTER, STRONGER: BREMERTON’S LIFE PROOF BOATS BLAZES TOWARDS THE FUTURE WITH A GROWING LINE OF SUPER SPEEDY, ULTRA-SAFE VESSELS SUITED TO NORTHWEST WATERS.

AHEAD BY RANDY WOODS

FEATURE PHOTOGRAPHY BY NEIL RABINOWITZ & COURTESY OF LIFE PROOF BOATS

50

D The slick 39’ Yachtline model from Life Proof Boats.

51

IT’S AN ALMOST UNIVERSAL RULE IN THE BOATING WORLD: SPEED SELLS. AND FEW BOAT BUILDERS IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST HAVE COMBINED DURABILITY, FLEXIBILITY, AND PURE SPEED QUITE AS WELL AS LIFE PROOF BOATS, BASED IN BREMERTON, WASHINGTON. All around the Salish Sea, Life Proof ’s product lines of aluminum tenders, sportfishing boats, and runabouts, as well as commercial watercraft for police and fire departments, have multiplied rapidly since the company was first established in 2014. Do they ever churn rapidly through those waters, too. “Most of our clients are very comfortable with speeds of about 50 miles per hour,” says Life Proof CEO Micah Bowers, with a chuckle. Top speeds, however, can often be well north of 60 mph, depending on the engine package. In more recent years, the boats themselves have evolved about as fast as their speeds. Starting with a few lines of sturdy, nimble 17’ to 25’ center-console tenders with single or double outboards, Life Proof now offers triple-engine models from 27’ to 41’, complete with closed cabins, galleys with sleek wrap-around benches and dining tables, stand-up heads, and berths for up to three people. Perhaps the corollary to “speed sells” is “size matters.” “We found that customers want bigger boats,” Bowers said. Just last month, the company showcased 35’ and 41’ models at Seattle’s Boats Afloat show. Each of these models—with beams of 11’ and 12’ respectivly—feature a lower cuddy with its own head, plus two bonus sleepers under the settee and in the saloon. Even with increasingly comfortable amenities, Life Proof boats of all sizes have never skimped on performance. The 35s can achieve speeds in excess of 55 mph from their triple 425-hp outboards and can turn on a dime with full control, thanks to custom-designed interceptor strakes and forward performance fins. Nearly all models are also equipped with Shockwave suspension, S5 helm chairs to manage the chop at high speeds. On the 41-footers, a triple set of V12 600-hp Mercury Verados are the newest outboard engines in the West Coast market, Bowers boasted. 52

Still, the latest and largest model at Life Proof is yet to come. Spring 2022 is the expected release date for the new 50’ model, featuring a triple set of the beefy Mercury 600s or a quad set of 425s. With a 14’ beam, the new boat will have room for a bow cockpit, a rear BBQ area, and three separate sleeping locations, plus a large master berth. Safety First While it’s generally taboo to say a boat can never go under, regardless of size, Life Proof pushes the idea, calling their boats “virtually unsinkable.” A bold claim? Perhaps. But each boat backs it up with what might be their most recognizable feature— a foam-filled collar encircling the gunwales. Though the collar systems may look inflatable, they are made of a rigid, expanded polyethylene foam, covered in tough urethane or PVC material. The closed-cell foam within the rings is impervious to water and provides more than 60 pounds of flotation per cubic foot. Even if the boat is swamped, the self-bailing scuppers can remove all the water in less than a minute. Because of these collars, the all-aluminum boats are often confusingly categorized as RIBs. “They act very similar to a traditional RIB, in terms of the added stability,” Bowers explained. But since they never deflate, he added, the collars provide “all of the best parts” of RIBS “without any of the bad ones.” Custom Crafted Owned by the marine industry innovation company Inventech Marine Solutions (inventechmarine.com), Life Proof has also become known for its wide array of customized boat options. Much of that variety comes from the company’s reliance on aluminum hulls. With 40,000 square feet of manufacturing space across three facilities

The premium air ride seating, plus a peek at the aft deck, aboard the 39’ Yachtline.

CONSTRUCTED WITH COMMERCIAL-GRADE PREMIUM MATERIALS; METICULOUSLY DESIGNED WITH BEAUTIFUL FORM AND PURPOSEFUL FUNCTION; EVERY HULL, HELM, AND CABIN IS MADE TO HANDLE EVEN THE WORST OF MOTHER NATURE. in Bremerton, Life Proof does all their own aluminum cutting and welding. The team works exclusively with 5086 H32 grade aluminum, cutting metal sheets with a CNC router to any precise configuration. For the first few years, Life Proof Boats had a general look of rugged, utilitarian tenders, but nearly every one of them looked a little different. “Customers would ask, ‘Can you build this?’ and we almost always could,” Bowers said. One 31’ GT Coupe model, in fact, includes an open-air jacuzzi in the bow section, as requested by the client. The water is kept hot via heat exchangers in the twin 200hp OXE diesel engines. As the company matured, Life Proof began making fewer customizations and focused on developing existing brands. That’s not to say the number of boat lines is shrinking. Currently, there are ten models of pleasure craft—including its best-selling 23’ to 27’ Runabout series— five in the “yacht-class” tender market, and another ten for commercial uses. Due to the speed and maneuverability of the models, as well as the handy folding bow doors and reinforced beaching plates, police and other government entities account for about 40% of Life Proof ’s sales.

“We first became popular largely through word-of-mouth in the Pacific Northwest,” Bowers said. But over its seven years of business, the company has expanded its reach to Hawaii, California, and Florida, and also has a sales center in Canada. Some of their custom-made boats have even made it all the way to Guam and Saipan. Like virtually all businesses around the country, Life Proof has suffered delays in getting access to materials because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sales have been brisk, but delivery times after each order have stretched to two and a half to three years. “The biggest bottleneck is getting computer chips for the Mercury engines to keep up with the demand,” Bowers said. But as the world hopes to emerge from the ongoing COVID-19 crisis in the next year, Life Proof aims to prove it can remain a reliable source of practical, durable, and, above all, fun watercraft in the Northwest. >> For more information on Life Proof Boats visit: lifeproofboats.com.

QUICK SHRIMP “CEVICHE” The flavors of the shrimp and salsa, both easily snagged at the market, need a little time to meld and marry here. Stash it in the cooler for a bit, then serve in individual cups for a beautiful appetizer or set out with a bowl of tortilla chips for casual feasting. Ingredients: 1 pound cooked and peeled shrimp 2 pints Metropolitan Market ‘Peach-O-Rama’ salsa or mango salsa Juice from 1-2 limes Salt

Optional for serving: Metropolitan Market tortilla chips or other favorite chip Directions: 1. Remove the tails from shrimp, and cut shrimp into bite-size pieces. 2. In a bowl, mix shrimp with the salsa and season with salt and lime juice to taste. If you like, drizzle with olive oil. Let it sit for at least 10 minutes for the flavors to meld before serving.

CRAB TOSTADITAS These petite party bites pack a punch, topped with succulent chunks of Dungeness crab, a dollop of Seahawk green guacamole, and a kiss of fiery chipotle powder. Ingredients: 2 ounces cooked Dungeness crab meat 1 tablespoon butter 12 small (about 1 1/2-inch) round or triangle-shaped corn chips or fried tortilla wedges 1/4 cup Metropolitan Market housemade guacamole Chipotle powder or chili powder Cilantro leaves

58

Directions: 1. Heat the butter in a small skillet over low heat. Add the crab, cover with a lid and allow to warm very gently for about 3 minutes or until slightly warm. Turn off heat. 2. Arrange the chips on a serving plate. Top each with about 1 teaspoon of guacamole, followed by 1 teaspoon of crab. Sprinkle with chipotle powder and garnish each with a cilantro leaf.

GRILLED AVOCADO & PORTOBELLO SALAD Here’s a new side to add to your sailgating repertoire— it’s great with grilled steak or game day burgers. The richness of the avocado and portobellos is balanced by a dressing made with blistered Serrano peppers, soy sauce, and lime juice. Ingredients: 3 large portobello mushrooms 1 avocado, ripe but not really soft 1/3 cup olive oil, divided 1 serrano pepper 2 scallions, white and light green part thinly sliced 1 tablespoon tamari (or soy sauce) 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice (from 1 lemon) Salt and pepper Directions: 1. Preheat a gas or charcoal grill and prepare the vegetables. Remove stems from portobellos and brush with olive oil on both sides. With skin on, cut avocado into 8 wedges lengthwise. Carefully remove skin and brush with olive oil on both sides. 2. Place mushrooms (stem-side down) and avocado on grill. Flip avocado slices after 3-5 minutes to get grill marks on both sides. Cook mushrooms for 5 minutes; flip and season with salt. Cook for an additional 5-8 minutes, until tender when pierced. (If you don’t have enough room on your grill to evenly space the mushrooms and avocado, grill them separately.) Add serrano pepper and scallions for the last few minutes of grilling, and cook until slightly blistered. 3. After grilling, cut mushrooms into quarters. Cut serrano and scallions into ¼-inch slices. Mix half the serrano pepper (or more to your liking), scallions, tamari, and lemon juice. Place the portobel los and avocado on a platter. Top with serrano dressing and drizzle with the remaining 3 tablespoons of olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. Serve warm or at room temperature.

ALMOND CAKE WITH WHIPPED CREAM & BALSAMIC BERRIES This dessert is a piece of you-know-what: Start with Metropolitan Market’s pre-made cake and just add fresh berries, enhanced with balsamic, and whipped cream for a beautiful and delicious halftime presentation. Ingredients: 1 quart fresh strawberries, stemmed and quartered 1 pint fresh blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, or a combination 1 tablespoon granulated sugar, more to taste 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar, more to taste 1 cup heavy whipping cream 2 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar 1 Metropolitan Market All-Occasion Almond Cake (available in the bakery)

60

Directions: 1. Combine berries, 1 tablespoon or more granulated sugar, and 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar. Toss gently. Set aside for 20 to 30 minutes or until berries release some of their juices. (Berries can be prepared up to a few hours ahead of serving; cover and chill.) 2. Chill mixing bowl and beaters before whipping the cream for best volume. Place cold cream and confectioners’ sugar in a mixing bowl and beat with an electric mixer to form soft peaks. 3. To serve, place cake on a platter. Spoon whipped cream into the center of the cake. Top with berries. Cut into wedges.

EX P E RT TA KE BY WORTH AVENUE YACHTS

Charter your course: A dreamy vision inspired by the charter vessel TCB as seen on this month’s cover. ILLUSTRATION BY TAVIS COBURN

62

Welcome to Washington Thanks to the passing of House Bill 1107, the state is ready to welcome boaters from the world over—and the experts at WORTH AVENUE YACHTS have the 4-1-1 on how to charter a vessel in our iconic waters.

Good news! The great expanse of sapphire water along the Washington state coastlines can now be enjoyed by all who wish to experience their pristine beauty. For years, Washington state has imposed a tax on yachts owned by out-of-state residents wishing to cruise or charter with a captain and crew. This has prevented many yachters from visiting the alluring Washington waters we call home, but thanks to a large coalition of maritime organizations, businesses, and yacht enthusiasts from around Washington state, this is no longer the case. House Bill 1107, signed into law by Governor Inslee on May 3, 2021 and effective July 25, 2021, allows for out-of-state residents to both bring in their yachts to cruise our waters and for Washington boaters to charter their own vessels much more easily. Here, the expert team at Worth Avenue Yachts breaks down the different ways HB 1107 has changed chartering here in the Northwest for the better:

take care of the details so that you can luxuriate in your dream vacation. Sit back, relax, and let the crew perfectly tailor your charter for an unforgettable experience exploring Washington. Wake up to an enticing breakfast prepared by your private chef, cruise through the cool Washington waters, and watch the Seattle skyline fade away. Make your way to Port Townsend, a charming town with rich history and streets filled with captivating Victorian architecture. Walk through the lively downtown before returning to your yacht for cocktails as you watch the sunset on the aft deck. Continue your journey as you head to Cascade Bay where you’ll find Rosario Resort on Orcas Island, here you can enjoy breathtaking views, pristine oceanfront dining, and relaxing spa treatments. Finish your epic adventure in Bellingham, where you can listen to the sound of the waves crashing into the shore before disembarking from your private yacht.

Bring Your Yacht Experienced yachters from outside of Washington who wish to captain their own yacht can now explore the Puget Sound for up to 60 days without a permit. If you wish to extend your adventures, a permit can be obtained from various Washington State agencies to lengthen your stay an additional 60 consecutive days. And what a stay it could be. During your extended stay, take time to explore the picturesque San Juan Islands: Make your way to Lopez Island where you can walk along the beach before savoring a farm to table meal prepared at one of the local restaurants. You’ll lose track of time reveling in the natural beauty of this paradise. Discover the whimsical Roche Harbor Resort on San Juan Island, a dream destination for yachters in Washington. Walk the docks, speak to fellow yachters on your way to the shops that feature local artists or one of the scrumptious restaurants. Cruise to the remote waters of Stuart Island, where you can explore the 33,000 feet of shoreline and enjoy the spectacular scenery.

Charter Out Your Yacht Yacht owners wishing to charter their private yacht have never had a more prime opportunity. Thanks to the recent changes, entity and individually owned yachts can maximize the return on their luxury investment through a successful charter program. Chartering can be a great way for owners to offset costs such as maintenance, running costs, and crew salaries. To be eligible, yachts registered outside of Washington will need: a valid cruising license in the U.S.; a charter occurring for more than three consecutive days; approval from the Washington State Department of Revenue; and a departure date less than six months after arrival.

Book a Charter Cruise Yachters desiring a carefree experience now have the ability to design a private vacation on board yachts up to 200 feet from around the world with an experienced captain and crew. With this option, your captain will

Whether you are Washington native or a visitor looking to book a charter or create a charter program, this new legislation allows all us all to enjoy this perch on the Pacific in wonderful new ways. >> To learn more about HB 1107 and its benefits or to learn how to legally charter your yacht in Washington and beyond, contact Worth Avenue Yachts at 206.209.1920 or Seattle@WorthAvenueYachts.com 63

TI GH T L I N E S BY MARK YUASA

Autumn Angling MARK YUASA outlines your best bets for late-season salmon fishing in the Sound, plus gives the forecast for the winter crabbing just ahead. Autumn is the season when colorful leaves adorn tree limbs, watching football games becomes a weekend priority, and the daylight hours start to wane. But for some, it’s a time to turn over a new page in the novel entitled Fishing, and this special chapter is called late-season fall salmon in our local marine waterways. Now through October 31, the central and south-central Puget Sound (Areas 10 and 11) are open daily for feisty coho salmon, and the southern end south of the Narrows Bridge (Area 13) also holds a fairly good chance for hatchery coho and Chinook. The Hood Canal (Area 12), also open daily through October 31, doesn’t garner as much attention, but anglers should take notice as it has a liberal four-salmon daily limit (release chum through Oct. 15 and all Chinook). Grays Harbor on the south-central coast is a known late-season coho fishery, and the East Bay channel is open daily through November 30 with a one-salmon daily limit (release all Chinook). Never overlook Grays Harbor as it traditionally hosts some of the largest coho in the state, and generates good fishing clear up to and beyond Halloween for migrating fish destined for the Chehalis and Humptulips river systems. This is a shallow water fishery so don’t fret over fishing in 15 to 20 feet of water, and keep your bait bouncing on the sandy bottom with a flood tide being the optimal time. Gear of choice is a diver or a six- to eight-ounce drop ball sinker tied to a one-foot leader off my three-way swivel and a seven- to eight-foot, 20-pound leader to a tight spinning, green label plug cut herring. Winter Dungeness Crab An announcement from state fisheries regarding the opening of late fall/winter Dungeness crab fishing should be out very soon. The summer crabbing 64

season ended on Labor Day, and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife has been gathering data from angler catch record cards to determine what areas can support a winter crab fishery. In recent years the winter fisheries happened in the northern waters from the Apple Cove Point-Edwards Point line north into the Strait of Juan de Fuca as well as the San Juan Island region, and are usually open daily through December 31. Dungeness crab populations in the southern reaches of Puget Sound were either in poor health or recreational crabbers attained their share of the catch this past summer. The Dungeness crab sport, non-tribal commercial and tribal fisheries caught 8,681,309 pounds in 2020 (compared to 8,636,151 in 2019) and catches have been trending downward since a record catch in 2015 when 11.8 million pounds was landed. But, despite a lower turnout during the winter, Dungeness crab are highly sought after for their firm meat that’s a hit at holiday gatherings. Winter catch rates are often better and it keeps folks busy when other saltwater fishing options are minimal. For updates on crabbing, go to: wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/shellfishing-regulations/crab. Now it’s time for me to beat out the stormy weather. I’ll see you on the water! Mark Yuasa is a longtime fishing and outdoor writer. Born and raised in Seattle, and a UW alum, Mark joined the Northwest Marine Trade Association in 2017 as the Director of Grow Boating Programs after 33 years at The Seattle Times. He also volunteers with the BSA Chief Seattle Council and National Order of the Arrow organizations, and enjoys fishing for salmon and other fish species in local waterways.

O N WATCH BY PETER SCHRAPPEN

Silver Linings In a topsy-turvy time, PETER SCHRAPPEN explores how local agencies are still looking out for boaters on the water. If nothing else, COVID-19 has allowed our society the chance to reexamine how we do business. Maybe it’s customs like handshakes or five-day work weeks. What about the school year and having kids stay home when they are sick or for professionals opting to pop into a meeting virtually instead of commuting for a 15-minute meeting in Washington, D.C.? (As I’ve been known to do.) When it comes to government affairs, what are the silver linings out there? For one, partnerships and collaborative action have risen in importance. Mutual self-interest rules and the relationships that existed pre-pandemic count even more. Specifically, the team effort in place to solve the permitting impasse coming out of National Marine Fisheries Service, the advocacy around fully funding Seattle Harbor Patrol, and the Montlake Bridge closures all are about “we” and not about the “me” of government affairs. Take the permitting issue. You may remember this migraine-inducing issue stems from a policy set in March 2018 that treats all improvements to existing marinas as new projects. What’s worse, there was not a path forward to offset this so-called new construction. Fast forward through arduous meetings and much frustration, and get ready for some good news. In the last couple of weeks, Congressman Derek Kilmer (D-Gig Harbor) spearheaded a letter sent to NMFS that shared the collective frustration and requested that they put a plan in place so projects can move forward. Northwest Marine Trade Association and Recreational Boating Association of Washington also continually pressed decision makers for support, and it looks like our calls did not go unanswered. Let’s move onto Seattle Harbor Patrol. If you have visited Lake Union recently, you’ll notice that you are not alone out there. Hopefully, you have not needed the services of Seattle Harbor Patrol. The understaffed officers are stretched thin and struggle to keep up with the demand out there, whether it’s Andrews Bay or boating mishaps around Seattle.

66

Unfortunately, the total number of officers (about 14) is about half of what a full-strength team looks like. To make matters worse, the Seattle City Council is looking to continue to poke holes in the department with what I would consider unneeded studies and whispers of moving the entire force to Seattle Fire. That’s the bad news. The good news is that about 40 companies and associations, again spearheaded by NMTA, RBAW, and North Seattle Industrial Association, have put together a campaign to save the Harbor Patrol. Doesn’t the Seattle City Council have enough problems to solve? Why are they trying to solve something that doesn’t need solving (outside of getting them the money to hire officers)? Oy vey. Bringing us home here, let’s examine the Montlake Cut and the drawbridge. Looking at this project in the rearview mirror, your favorite boating associations sprung into action and convinced Washington Department of Transportation to keep boaters in mind as this bridge under construction for a month. The transportation department listened and proffered a solution that accommodates boaters. Wrapping up, here are a few truisms that have provided the right mix for success here: • Out of sight, out of mind. • Together we stand, divided we fall. • Relationships trump information. While everything else seems topsy-turvy right now, it is refreshing, at least for me, to know that advocacy efforts during the pandemic do not look much different than pre-pandemic. Peter Schrappen is Northwest Marine Trade Association’s Government Affairs Director and the Clean Boating Foundation’s Executive Director. Additionally, he serves on the boards of the Boating Safety Advisory Council, Washington Boating Alliance, and U.S. Superyacht Association.

ASK NI G E L—A B OA R D Zvi BY NIGEL BARRON

Homeward Bound NIGEL BARRON and the crew deliver Zvi back to Seattle with another breathtaking open ocean sail on the return from Transpac 2021. Almost 7,000 miles spread across 30 days of sailing both felt exhilarating and exhausting. And while the race could best be described in Thomas Hobbes’ words, “nasty, brutish, and short,” the delivery back home could be more aptly described as the Talking Heads put it—“same as it ever was.” The ride can really be broken down to three parts. You have the same accelerated breeze that you finished the race in, followed by the middle section of more typical ocean breeze, and then usually something interesting in the last couple of days as you approach the Washington coast. A few days after finishing Transpac, the crew met up on the boat at Kewalo Basin Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii, to convert it from ocean racer to delivery sailboat. As part of the conversion, we exchanged the racing sails, which were shipped back to Long Beach, with delivery sails. We have a great new delivery main that is full hoist to the first reef. We also have two additional 45-gallon fuel tanks installed below deck for the delivery home. You never know how much fuel you need, but I’d rather come back to Seattle and give away fuel than wish I had more in the middle of the ocean. Another important part of the delivery is provisioning. Unlike the race, we brought our coolers and made ourselves comfortable. We ran the refrigerator on high, giving us a more options for fresh food, so we don’t rely exclusively on freeze-dried meals. We set a departure date of August 2, to give the delivery crew a full weekend in Hawaii. The plan was to fill up at the adjacent fuel dock and depart. Minutes after leaving our slip for the fuel dock, we encountered our first obstacle; the fuel dock was rationing its diesel. With a little sweet talk and help from our shore support (i.e. my father-in-law), we were able to secure diesel with just a slight delay. Lesson learned: When you’re on an island, don’t presume supply will meet your demand. We headed out of Kewalo Basin, hoisted sails, and turned to the west to keep us in the lee of the island and out of the waves. The Waianae coastline is breathtaking, and we had a great sail heading 355. As we cleared the island, the predicted increase in sea state and wind arrived, and we went to the second reef on the main and kept the smaller #5 jib. The first few days were rough as expected, which caused some seasickness on board and the usual grumbling about how uncomfortable 68

the boat is. Unfortunately, on day three, we noticed a problem with the track on the mast and had to take the main down. We still had plenty of pressure, so sailing along with the jib and the genoa staysail was fine. A fix underway would not be possible, so we consulted with our shore team. The biggest issue for the shore team was a redo of all of our polars and routing options to keep the wind in the optimum range. Thankfully, with Roger “Clouds” Badham and Andy Koch on land with access to high resolution weather files, they did just that. After clearing the bigger pressure and seas, we settled into the monotony of an ocean passage switching between motoring, motor sailing, and just sailing as the pressure and direction allowed. We spent a lot of time with the boom tent up to give us shade. We were able to land three nice mahi-mahi tuna that gave us some fresh food, and we found time to swim in 17,000 feet of water 1,000 miles from land. Finally, around 50° North, we made the right-hand turn for Cape Flattery. We knew that we would have a brief 10-hour spell of 30-40 knots of wind as we approached the coast. But plenty of notice means you can prepare; we went around the boat and check lines and stowed gear. We made water and prepared for the inevitable pressure. It came as predicted, but by 2 a.m. it was mostly gone, and then within 15 miles of the coast, we were becalmed. Fortunately, we had the fuel to be able to motor at full speed all the way back to Shilshole. All told, it was 15 days at sea. But there was no time to relax after our arrival, as we needed the boat in the yard and the mast out, repairs started, and upgrades necessary to enjoy the upcoming in-shore Puget Sound sailing season. Of course, we also have to prepare for another chance to sail across the ocean for the Pacific Cup next summer. Nigel Barron was born in England and developed his sea legs at an early age. He is currently the project manager at CSR Marine in Seattle, where he has worked for 15 years, first as a rigger, then an installer, and now in his current role. This summer, he took part in the Transpac 2021 race captaining Zvi, a Reichel/Pugh design and McConaghy-built custom race boat from Seattle.

R AC I N G SH E E T BY DOUG HANSEN

Sailing Right Into Fall DOUG HANSEN previews the abundance of autumn regattas just ahead as we reach the month of October.

Well, it’s finally happening; the days are getting shorter, sleeves are getting longer, and the dog days of summer are nearly behind us. Somehow, amongst a lot of swirling chaos in the world, boating life managed to move forward during a fantastic summer of sailboat racing throughout the Salish Sea. While we could lament the incoming Pacific Northwest winter and tune up the skis, there is still plenty of fun to be had on the water in the fall months. We finally appear to have a familiar fall calendar of weekend regattas to bring us to the close of the 2021 sailing season. The first official fall event for the big boat fleet is the Foulweather Bluff Race on October 2. There will be a shift in venue from Edmonds that will make for a new dynamic within the race. Still hosted by Corinthian Yacht Cub of Edmonds, the race will be run out of Kingston Cove Yacht Club on Bainbridge Island instead. The move is in line with efforts to make the race a more social event with boats staying in Kingston overnight for what might be the last warm weather cruising weekend of the year. A bit further south, the Corinthian Yacht Club of Seattle is following its spectacular summer of weeknight racing with a pair of short course race weekends for the Puget Sound Sailing Championships, better known as PSSC. Separated into a small boat event on October 2-3 and a big boat event the following weekend, the regattas take place on the waters of Shilshole Bay and traditionally comprise of two racecourses to give fleets plenty of space to have fair and reliable races. The small boat weekend invites one design fleets from J24s, the normally large fleets of Laser dinghies, and, of course, we expect the Tasar fleet to be well represented with their World Championships coming up next summer. The big boat weekend on October 9-10 welcomes handicap fleets and one design, attracting everything from the Melges24 and J80 fleets up to the large keel boats such as the TP52s and the increasingly popular PHRF 40 fleet. last year’s regatta being limited to boats that could race with five crew or less, this year’s event is certainly going to be a memorable one with fully crewed boats taking to the start line and ready to race hard. For the third weekend of the month, we make our way back again to Shilshole Bay for the Sloop Tavern Yacht Club Fall Regatta on October 16. Focused on the local fleets of PHRF-rated keel boats, this 25-year-old mainstay utilizes familiar permanent marks around the Sound, making for a wide course range that results in longer races compared to the short course buoy racing of the weekend before. Traditionally, this regatta is the culmination of the weeknight Ballard Cup summer series and puts fleets of familiar boats racing against one another one last time before the winter. Finally, wrapping up a busy month of racing is the pinnacle event, the Seattle Yacht Club Grand Prix Invitational hosted October 22-24. The organizers put on a mix of distance and short route races with the focus on variety and fair and square courses; the end goal is to determine which crews are the most well rounded by putting them through a range of conditions. Being late in the year, there is normally the opportunity for heavy winds and conditions that push boats and crews to the limit, and at times, beyond. Being the first Grand Prix regatta to be held since 2019, as last year’s was cancelled, it will certainly be one to watch as there are many new faces on seasoned hardware as well as old faces on new boats competing to have their name on the trophy. It’s looking to be a memorable month of events to squeeze the last drop of on-water fun with possibly decent weather. This does not come without hard work, coordination, and a lot of luck. As always, there are many people to thank to make all these events possible. Be sure to check back here for reports on these races and others in the coming months.

CHANGE A LIFE. DONATE YOUR BOAT. Support local and regional programs for children and young adults through the charitable donation of your boat. The Pacific Marine Foundation is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization funding regional programs such as Northwest Youth Services, Sea Scouts, Boys & Girls Clubs, and local public school education foundations. A substantial tax savings and the possibility of a partial cash sale makes a charitable donation a very attractive alternative for any owner who is considering selling their well-found power or sailing yacht.
