Surfers Help Clean the Waves They Ride Surfing fanatics are known for their laser-focused ambition to ride the next wave, and now in turn, an ambitious new program is helping them to keep those waves free of plastic waste and other pollutants—and empowering surfers to be their own environmentalists. In a partnership between Hawaii-based Kona Brewing Co. and a California nonprofit group called the Save The Waves Coalition, the “Catch a Clean Wave” program kicked off in July, featuring a 10-day, 1,200-mile traveling tour of the West Coast’s top 15 surfing spots to promote beach clean-up efforts. Beginning here in Washington on July 13 at a La Push beach, the tour continued south, ending in San Diego on July 22, picking up buckets full of discarded waste. Headlining the tour was professional surfer Anna Gudauskas (née Ehrgott) and noted surfing photographer Sarah Lee. At each stop, Gudauskas would surf the waves and afterwards they would take part in local community beach clean-ups. Kona Brewing also cited a report by the Natural Resources Defense Council, which estimated that 80% of marine litter comes from land-based pollution, such plastic shopping bags and water bottles,
aluminum soda cans, glass bottles, drinking straws, and cigarette butts. To help raise awareness of this problem and mitigate the effects, Kona Brewing donated $50,000 to the Save The Waves Coalition. To continue the environmental efforts beyond the tour, the nonprofit also launched a Save The Waves app (savethewaves.org/app) in June, which relies on the power of crowdsourcing from surfers and other beachgoers. App users are encouraged to report locations of coastal debris, take photos of it, and tag the location using GPS, so it can be tracked and disposed of properly. “It’s a fun way to spotlight the popularity of surfing across the globe, as well as highlight the important need to keep our oceans clean,” said Vanessa Parker, brand manager for Kona Brewing. “We hope everyone, regardless of where they live, will be reminded that we need to be active participants in ocean conservation, and what better place to start than in your own backyard.” For more information on the Save the Waves coalition, visit: savethewaves.org. [ SCHOOL’S IN SESSION ]
All-New Maritime High School Opens this Month A year after COVID-19 turned the Seattle-area’s school systems upside down, Highline Public Schools is making another, much more positive change this month with the debut of Maritime High School, which focuses on educating students interested in the region’s bustling maritime industry. For now, the new high school will be based at an interim site in Des Moines until a permanent site is determined, but the inaugural class of 9th graders is set to begin here in September. The district said this summer that it planned to enroll up to 44 students this year through an admissions lottery. “In a region that is a hub for the maritime industry, it is so important that we give students an opportunity to prepare for the good jobs and meaningful careers this field has to offer,” said Highline Superintendent Susan Enfield. Classes at the school will focus on a range of skills needed to succeed in the maritime industry, such as familiarity with boat navigation, ship design, world trade, commercial fishing, and ocean sciences. Students in 11th and 12th grades will have access to internships that can provide hands-on experience and good workforce skills. The school will also prepare students for continuing their maritime education at two- and four-year colleges. The Port Townsend-based Northwest Maritime Center—which is partnering on the Maritime High School project, along with the Port of Seattle
and the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition—also offers a two-week program for 7th-graders that teaches water and seamanship skills and half-day maritime programs for juniors and seniors to earn additional credits, plus other customized programs for school groups across the region. “It’s hands-on, real-world education tied to maritime employment and the marine environment,” explains Jake Beattie, executive director of the Northwest Maritime Center. “This is powerful learning—learning that ignites curiosity in students.” According to a 2020 report published by the Port of Seattle and other school supporters, the Washington’s maritime industry is growing at about 6.4% a year but has an average workforce age of 54. Projects like the Maritime High School, the study found, could help create a career pipeline for a successful industry facing a potential wave of retirements in the near future. Eighth-grade students interested in attending in the 2022-23 school year will have an opportunity to apply in January. (Fifty-one percent of seats are reserved for students who live within the boundaries of Highline Public Schools; the rest are available to out-of-district students.) For more information on enrollment and the program, visit: maritime.highlineschools.org. 23

[ RACE FOR A CAUSE ]
Second Annual Adventuress Cup to be Held September 18th On Saturday, September 18, local nonprofit Sound Experience invites racers to raise the sails and some funds, during its second annual Adventuress Cup – A Race for the Salish Sea. The event for sailboats and powerboats will be held in the waters of Shilshole Bay and will kick off with a festive boat parade. The race itself aims to raise critical funds for Sound Experience, which owns and operates the iconic tall ship Adventuress. Monies raised will help support youth education aboard the Adventuress, including the popular Girls at the Helm program as well as two new initiatives: Everett at Sea and Duwamish at Sea. These recently launched programs, in partnership with local organizations, introduce underserved teens to the marine environment. Sound Experience programs teach seamanship, environmental awareness and stewardship, and give young people on-the-water opportunities that help them grow and thrive. “At Sound Experience, we believe that we are all shipmates,” shares Catherine Collins, Executive Director. “The one thing we hear most from kids at the end of a program is, ‘I would never have been friends with [her/him/them] if we hadn’t sailed together.’” Race participants for the Cup can join the fun on the water or virtually, and crew members are encouraged to participate in peer-to-peer fundraising and environmental/education pre-race challenges to improve their boat’s handicap (or score). All activities will follow safety guidelines and procedures and a COVID responsible, post race awards party will be held at Corinthian Yacht Club on race day. To learn more, or to register your vessel in the race, visit: soundexp.org/AdventuressCup.

[ NEWS FROM THE MARINA ]
Elliott Bay Marina Purchased by Florida Group
A Florida-based operator of marine properties has purchased Seattle’s Elliott Bay Marina for a reported price of $80.5 million. As of July 16, Southern Marinas Holdings II, LLC, began operations as the new owners of one of the largest private marinas on the West Coast. Located at the edge of Seattle’s Magnolia neighborhood, Elliott Bay Marina has more than 1,200 water slips for vessels up to 300 feet in length and 10 miles of moorage. The full-service marina also includes repair facilities, a fuel dock, a convenience store, a Freedom Boat Club, and several retail vendors. It is also home to two popular Landry’s restaurants: Palisade and Maggie Bluffs. In a letter to Elliott Bay’s current members, marina principal John Kaiser thanked them for their loyal support of the “one of a kind” marina community for the past 30 years. “My partners and I have been most fortunate to see our vision for Elliott Bay Marina come to fruition,” he said. “But the timing is right for our ownership group to transition the marina to a team whose principal focus is both marina and resort operations. We have found such a group in Southern Marinas.” Gary Rosmarin, principal of Southern Marinas, assured marina patrons that they “will continue to see the same familiar, friendly faces you have come to know over the years.” Info for Elliott Bay Marina can be found at: elliottbaymarina.co.

Marine Servicenter Wins Third-Straight Jeanneau Dealer of the Year Award For the third straight year, Seattle’s Marine Servicenter has been named the North American Jeanneau Sailboat Dealer of the Year. This was also the fourth time Marine Servicenter has earned this title in the past six years. The 2021 award was presented on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay during the first in-person Jeanneau Dealer Meeting in more than two years. The Dealer of the Year award is presented to one of 22 Jeanneau dealerships in North America, based on customer satisfaction, after-sales service, annual sales volume, and top-notch owners’ events and support. Dan Krier, vice president of Marine Servicenter, thanked the entire staff and the company’s vendors in the Pacific Northwest for their support. “And to all of our Jeanneau owners, thank you for buying boats with us and putting your trust in us,” he added. Drink Up at this Floating Lemonade Stand Operated by Two Seattle Sisters
Beloved Boating Events Return
It’s a boat…it’s a pontoon…wait, it’s a floating lemonade shop! One of the sweetest additions to the Lake Union scene this summer was the new Quinn & Kate’s Lemonade, owned and operated by a pair of Seattle school-age siblings. With a little help from dad, Quinn Carner, 8, and sister Kate Carner, 11, launched their business in May, selling icy glasses of homemade lemonade and other frosty treats to kayakers, paddlers, and boaters on the lake from their roaming stand. Adorned with artificial grass, a petite picnic table, and a farmhouse-inspired hut stocked with supplies, it can be steered via a Bluetooth-operated motor driven by their father, Ned Carner, from a nearby kayak or the family’s houseboat. Lemonades sell for $3 each and the girls are donating a third of their profits to a charity of their choosing, in this case Rainier Animal Fund; they also received a microloan to start their stand, and are now paying that forward by donating microloan funds to other women-owned and -operated businesses around the world. The budding entrepreneurs plan to continue selling lemonade during the month of September, and post each day’s lake location on their Instagram feed, @lemonsforgood. Keep a weather eye out, perhaps some cash stashed in your back pocket (although they do accept Venmo and ApplePay), and snag a feel-good glass for yourself. For more details on both the stand and the sisters, go to: lemonsforgood.com.
Two of the region’s most popular boating events are set to return this month; get your tickets and prepare to make way:

Highlights will include an awards show, the Race to Alaska Blazer Party, and an Over the Bar: Bell Tolls Ceremony. For the safety of attendees, the organizers will require masks to be worn at all indoor events and encourage visitors to get vaccinated. For more details, visit: woodenboat.org. Sept. 16-19 Lake Union Boats Afloat Show Chandler’s Cove, Seattle The return of the largest floating boat show on the West Coast will feature motorboats, yachts, sailboats, cruisers, and related accessories and equipment. Produced by the Northwest Yacht Brokers Association and the Northwest Marine Trade Association, the four-day event is expected to attract thousands of boating enthusiasts and will offer chances to speak with dozens of brokers. As of press time, notable boats set to be on display included a Fleming 65 Pilothouse motoryacht from Chuck Hovey Yachts, a Jeanneau 440 from Marine Servicenter, and a California-built 2022 Mag Bay 33CC from Stan Miller Yachts, among many others. Overnight Sensation The artful accommodations of the future? Anthénea’s fully equipped, eco-friendly floating condos allow you to lap in luxury on the high seas. Is it an eco-savvy vessel that can efficiently glide over the seas with minimal impact? Or, maybe an uber luxurious hotel room with spa-like amenities? When it comes to the intriguing new Anthénea (anthenea.fr/en/anthenea/) floating condo concept from France, the answer is: both. Available to both private buyers looking to purchase their own private oasis, or to hotels, restaurants, spas, and other businesses looking to add on-water space to their sites, Anthénea officially opened up for orders late this summer, with delivery to eager buyers expected in early 2022. Billed as the world’s first seaworthy hotel suite, the fully autonomous pod offers modern accommodations suited for two adults or a family of four, with an elegantly appointed interior that includes an extra-large circular bed, lounge area, bar, and kitchenette. Up top, the spacious solarium offers 360-degree views of the water as well as plush seating for up to 12 people. Then there’s the eco element: Anthénea is powered by the five solar panels on its dome roof that are designed to automatically rotate to capture the sunlight; the pod can also be outfitted with electric propulsion and a joystick, as requested. Sitting atop the water like a lotus flower for minimal impact on the underwater ecosystem, the strong, seafaring structure can withstand winds up to 27 knots and is crafted from 100 percent recyclable materials—all seemingly making it a natural fit for a Northwest region that has been long known for thinking green. These fisherman sweaters from Long Wharf Supply’s SeaWell Collection will not only keep you cozy on deck, they will also help reduce the amount of plastic waste in our waterways. Made from a blend of recycled oyster shells and water bottles, combined with natural lambswool yarn, the SeaWell line is antimicrobial, ultra-soft, and lightweight, with designs inspired by the traditional buoy markings from New England lobster traps. ‘Whaleships’ of the Puget Sound Print These whimsical, antique-inspired prints of historical ships of Puget Sound will be a great conversation starter in your salon. Above the waterline, the drawings are accurate representations of famous regional vessels from the last century, including the Queen of Seattle paddle-wheeler, the Lightship Swiftsure, and the Art Deco-era Kalakala ferry. The hulls, however, are represented by various types of whales carrying the boats to their destinations. Created by Seattle illustrator and tattoo artist Kyler Martz, the 18-by-24inch “Whaleship” prints are made with navy ink on cream French Speckletone paper. $100 // kylermartz.com
Fendersox Add Personality to Safety Equipment Boat fenders are necessary boat safety equipment to prevent hull damage, but that doesn’t mean they can’t express a little of the captain’s character. They can even be customized to show your own boat’s name. 2021 Fountaine Pajot MY6 Created by an internationally renowned design team, the new MY6 catamaran available from Sundance Yachts features an abundance of space, plus extraordinary fuel efficiency for long-range, blue-water cruising.
40
The MY6 (formerly called the MY 44) is the latest power catamaran offered by France’s revered Fountaine Pajot and features luxury accommodations and long-range, open ocean cruising capabilities. Designed by the legendary naval architects Daniel Andreiu and PierAngelo Andreani, the MY6 offers an unprecedented amount of living space for a multihull vessel. The flybridge, measuring nearly 130 square feet, enables spectacular open-air views of the horizon, as well as room for a sunpad lounge, a table, starboard seating, and one of boat’s two helm stations. Another sunpad can be found on the lounge deck in the forward cockpit. A curved staircase provides access from the flybridge to the aft cockpit area, equipped with padded benches and plenty of room for an optional table. The swim platform is hydraulically equipped to be lowered to the water or can be used to store a dinghy crane. Inside, MY6’s beam of 21’7” allows for a salon encompassing a generous 215 square feet, with a comfortable L-shaped couch in the lounge, a flatscreen TV that can be hidden behind a wall panel, an adjustable dining table to fit eight people, and a galley that opens directly onto the aft cockpit. The galley includes a full-size refrigerator for long trips, a cooktop, and a stove, as well as space for an optional microwave. In the passageway, the berths offer full sea-facing views through panoramic windows yet still provide voluminous storage space. The 161-square-foot owner’s suite on the port includes a king-size bed, a wall-mounted TV, and an en suite head with a shower stall. The two VIP bedrooms on starboard have island queen or double beds, plus their own en suite heads. Another forward storage space, with access to the salon, can also be converted into a small stateroom for children. At the main helm, the electronics package includes the standard Volvo Penta 500 (or optional 600) IPS controls, providing easy maneuvering for skippers of any experience level. Lateral movements at the dock can be made with the simple push of the joystick. On the water, the twin Volvo engines and the semi-displacement hulls deliver outstanding stability in all sea conditions, even at the top speed of 30 knots. The fuel-efficient MY6 is designed specifically for long-range, blue-water cruising, with a range of up to 2,000 nautical miles on a single fuel tank.

The cruising speed is 22 knots, but top speeds of 30 knots can be achieved, with a range of about 300 nautical miles. Even those new to skippering can feel in control behind the helm with two Volvo joystick controls. The IPS offers an excellent power-to-weight ratio, enhanced torque, and improved fuel efficiency, while the underwater exhausts muffle engine noise.

The Center for Wooden Boats invites you inside the bustling boatshops that hum at the heart of its historic and iconic campus nestled on the shores of South Lake Union. Here, in both the light-filled Wagner Education Center and the distinctive floating boatshop, classic wooden boats are lovingly, artfully, and masterfully created or restored at the hands of the expert in-house team and enthusiastic students alike.

Want to give it a try? You can, as CWB offers weeklong, build-your-own-boat workshops in partnership with Chesapeake Light Craft. Working away in the airy shop space inside the Wagner Education Center, the budding builders here lay fiberglass over the decks of their kayaks as they are guided by instructor Casey Wilkinson of Kea Kayaks. Above, one finished design boasts an orca overlay, crafted from a nicely finished piece of plywood, to serve as a personalized detail on top of the bow.

SAILOR DESIGN BY
Renowned local architect Steve Hoedemaker draws on a longtime love of boating to design structures synergic with both land and sea. BY KATE CALAMUSA

When it comes to local architect Steve Hoedemaker, it could be said that building design flows through his brain as much as boating runs in his blood, the two passions combining to create an artful expression of the Pacific Northwest’s genetic make-up.
A partner in the Georgetown-based architecture firm Hoedemaker Pfeiffer (hoedemakerpfeiffer.com), Hoedemaker is a third-generation sailor who grew up exploring the waters of the Puget Sound region with his family, often voyaging back and forth from the city and the familial lodgings on Lopez Island. His father David was also an architect, and Hoedemaker fondly recalls father-son time learning the intricacies of sailing, first on his grandfather’s boat and then on the Norwester, his father’s 1963 50-foot Kettenburg—and the vessel Hoedemaker still sails on to this day. “Even in my earliest memories, I was never not on a sailboat,” Hoedemaker says. “Sailing to me is a soul position, the place I go to recharge and find inspiration. It’s where I’m happiest.” Perhaps it’s little wonder that his professional portfolio now often includes nods to this most personal passion. 60
The Hoedemaker Pfeiffer team is well-known and regarded for designing soulful, light-filled spaces that blend beautifully with the landscape and bring the outside in. Thus, over the years, the firm has been tasked with crafting many second family homes, which in the Pacific Northwest means they are frequently situated near the water—a match made in design heaven for Hoedemaker. The symbiotic relationship between land and sea is at the forefront of many projects as you scroll through the design house galleries: There’s the hanging art installation comprised of Japanese fishing floats and nautical rope spied in the living area of a rustic-glam Whidbey Island retreat; the island home tucked just perfectly into the sloping hillside to maximize the sweeping water views; or, the folding accordion-style doors in one family cabin that open to allow for pass-through lake peekaboo views, starting from the entry and gazing on through the living room out to the glorious deck. The West Seattle home that he shares with his husband, Thomas Swenson and their two dogs, littermates Tonka and Tripp, is similarly in tune with its surroundings, especially after the polishing the pair applied after purchasing the 1966-era gem. Perched on a cliff’s edge, the floor-to-ceiling windows in the cantilever living room almost beg you to escape to the water, boasting glittering views of Puget Sound, Blake Island,
Taking inspiration from its site in the San Juan Islands (an archipelago that Hoedemaker often enjoys sailing himself), the design team conceived of this sanctuary as a series of stone volumes growing naturally from their rugged surroundings— taking full advantage of the stunning water views. PHOTO OF THIS HOME BY KEVIN SCOTT
and Vashon Island. The firm’s other managing partner, Tim Pfeiffer, collaborated with the duo on the interiors, which are both fresh and welcoming, while maintaining a sense of sophistication and place. You will find a similar aura inside the nearby Harry’s Beach House restaurant in West Seattle that the firm helped to bring to life. “Here in the Northwest, there is a deep appreciation for modernism that is filtered through the lens of our natural resources, like fir and cedar, and then the water,” he says of the Hoedemaker Pfeiffer design philosophy. “When we design a space, we really think about how it will both connect the people within it, but also how it can connect those same people to the landscape that surrounds it.” When he steps away from the drafting board at the end of the day or on the weekends, it’s time to sail again, bound for the San Juans or other local haunts with Swenson, some friends, and occasionally, Tonka and Tripp in tow. (Hoedemaker jokes that the pups would be classified more as “landlubbers” than natural sailors, but are so beloved they often still tag along.) Additionally, the classically adorned, wood-accented Norwester, which is actually owned and (very successfully) shared by a group of friends, is not the only one moored at the dock. There’s also a 30-foot Grady-White fishing boat the pair hops aboard for Swenson, an avid fisherman from his earliest days, to nab his
next catch; and then the 15-foot Skipjack Chris-Craft motorboat they use to zip around the lake for an afternoon. But, it’s always the idea of the next sail that tugs the most at his heart strings. “I consider myself a sailor that makes use of powerboats when I have to,” Hoedemaker says with a chuckle. His dream vessel is a sailboat he could take off-shore or up to the colder waters of Alaska, but for now, the Seattle native is planning to continue exploring the stunning home waters and ports that have always inspired. “I’ve always enjoyed how the water gives us a differing perspective, as we look back at the land from a new viewpoint,” he explains. “It’s very instructive to thinking about how design can connect to the natural world around us.” 61
ASK NI G E L—A B OA R D Zvi BY NIGEL BARRON
The Finish Line Dispatch from paradise: NIGEL BARRON on successfully crossing the Pacific and the finish line aboard Zvi to cap off the Transpac 2021 race. Transpac 2021 is now in the books. And while no ocean race ever goes exactly as planned, this one came fairly close. At seven days and 17 hours, Team Zvi made a quick crossing for a 2,221-nautical-mile race. Though we didn’t win, we learned a lot. Most importantly, we learned the boat is solid, highly capable, and we can press as hard as we are able. We had a good practice sail two days before our start. The team of 10 race crew set up for the start and tested different sail combinations based on the anticipated breeze. The day before our start, we removed every item from the boat and then consciously decided what was coming with us and what we were leaving in Los Angeles. This was also the time for us to make a final sail selection based on the forecast. As I’ve written before, keeping the boat as light as possible is important in a race like this one. The race started at 1 p.m., and we made a nice exit from the start to Catalina Island. Transpac is a race of three parts—the start to Catalina, the race to the ocean breeze, and then the run to Hawaii. The first three days are always the toughest because of a close to broad reach, so the boat is on a pretty good heel. This is also the part where the crew is adjusting to life at sea and a watch system that is four hours on, four hours off. Life at sea is unlike anything experienced in Puget Sound, except we’re really treating an ocean race like an inshore race. Someone is always trimming the sails, someone is constantly adjusting the stack of sails on the rail to trim out the boat, and you’re pressing the boat as hard as you can 24 hours a day. Our navigator, Andy Koch, did an amazing job keeping us continually in the breeze. Andy was also continuously downloading the YellowBrick files to keep a track on our competition and weather files to 62
keep track of the ever-changing wind and rain. As you’d expect on a long, hard-charging race, breakages, wear and tear are inevitable. Because the boat came out of a refit and went straight to sailing, we also adjusted our polar and sail selection charts on the fly. The biggest single issue turned out to be the tack lines for our spinnakers. We were breaking them from a chafe inside the newly formed bow sprit. This was probably not something we would ever have discovered sailing in Puget Sound, at least not in the short term. This kind of problem takes time under sail to reveal itself. Thankfully, we came up with a fix in the middle of the ocean. All in all, we had a great race and learned that we can be faster. And we will be faster next year. Transpac 2021 turned out to be an excellent shakedown and practice for Pacific Cup 2022. As I write this, I’m sitting near the pool at one my favorite places, Kane’ohe Yacht Club on the island of Oahu. Kane’ohe is also the finish for the Pacific Cup, which starts in San Francisco next summer. Until then, I’ve got my list of fixes and upgrades to take to the boatyard. Nigel Barron was born in England and developed his sea legs at an early age. He is currently the project manager at CSR Marine in Seattle, where he has worked for 15 years, first as a rigger, then an installer, and now in his current role. This summer, he took part in the Transpac 2021 race captaining Zvi, a Reichel/Pugh design and McConaghy-built custom race boat from Seattle.

TI GH T L I N E S BY MARK YUASA
Silver Lining Summer may be waning, but MARK YUASA has some good news—September marks the arrival of coho season.
As a kid I couldn’t understand how my parents thought time went by so fast. Now I totally understand, it hit me like a ton of bricks during an August fishing trip that autumn is lurking around the corner. Despite summer being in the rear-view mirror, stowing the salmon fishing gear isn’t an option just yet. As I type this column, coho are barreling through the Strait of Juan de Fuca into Puget Sound and amplifying fishing expectations in the weeks ahead. Coho salmon—commonly referred to as “silvers” for their shiny, mint-bright sides—aren’t the biggest salmon species, averaging 4 to 13 pounds, with some as large as 20-plus pounds. However, pound for pound, a hooked coho is known to put on a scrappy fight with their acrobatic leaping abilities and erratic zig-zagging runs across the water’s surface. First, let’s take a closer look at the forecasted numbers in 2021. Some gratifying news is that the Puget Sound coho returns during the past two years have eclipsed the half-million mark. The prediction is 614,948 in 2021 up from an actual return of 504,604 in 2020. Even better news was that the resident coho (fish residing year-round in local marine areas) provided decent fishing around central Puget Sound from mid-June into early-August. These “stay at home” coho have put on a few pounds and join their migratory brothers and sisters in the upcoming early autumn fishing festivities. The marine locations to target coho are vast, but look for the bulk of fish early on in the Strait of Juan de Fuca at Sekiu (Area 5) and Port Angeles (Area 6). Both areas are open daily through September 30 for hatchery-marked coho with a two-fish daily limit. Look in the Strait’s shipping channels for the bulk of action, and watch for schools of fish and baitfish on your fish-finder. In the morning, silvers are often seen rolling and jumping on the surface. The southern portion along the east side of Whidbey Island (Area 8-2) below the Mukilteo-Clinton boundary line was closed for salmon in 2020. This was a coho fishing hotbed in 2019 and 2018, and a similar storyline is 66
possible this month as it reopens. Area 8-2 is open daily through September 19 with a two-fish daily limit, and requiring the release of wild unmarked coho, and all Chinook and chum. The northeast side of the island (Area 8-1) up into Saratoga Pass is also open daily through the 19th for all coho with a two-fish daily limit, although you need to release Chinook and chum. Most coho chasers will also dedicate time around northern Puget Sound (Area 9), open for hatchery coho only through September 30; and central Puget Sound (Area 10), open for all coho through October 31. South central Puget Sound (Area 11) is also open for all coho through the end of October, and southern Puget Sound (Area 13) is open year-round for hatchery-marked coho. A toss-up is the San Juan Islands (Area 7), which was closed to all salmon fishing under an emergency order in early July. WDFW staff was deciding last month whether to reopen it or not so check for any emergency regulation change at: wdfw.wa.gov/. Hood Canal (Area 12) is often overlooked, and the coho forecast is 84,531 down from 107,169 in 2020, but still a respectable number of fish! The “Great Bend” is open daily through November 30 with a liberal four-fish daily limit. Places like Quilcene Bay are expecting 32,158 coho, and they can be caught right now in this “terminal-type fishery” where your best success is casting and retrieving with a Buzz Bomb, Beau Mac or Point Wilson Dart jigs. Here’s to one the best “silver linings” of fall! Mark Yuasa is a longtime fishing and outdoor writer. Born and raised in Seattle, and a UW alum, Mark joined the Northwest Marine Trade Association in 2017 as the Director of Grow Boating Programs after 33 years at The Seattle Times. He also volunteers with the BSA Chief Seattle Council and National Order of the Arrow organizations, and enjoys fishing for salmon and other fish species in local waterways.

O N WATCH BY PETER SCHRAPPEN
More Cheese, Please Columnist PETER SCHRAPPEN on embracing and advocating for changes within the boating industry. Did you know that Who Moved My Cheese? has sold 28 million copies since its publication in 1998? For the uninitiated, this ten-minute read by Spencer Johnson, M.D., centers on a parable about two little people and two mice in a maze, searching for cheese, where each character represents a different attitude towards change, with cheese being what we consider success. The moral of the story is, push yourself to find new cheese and the minute you start moving, life will get better. That’s the frame for this month’s column. Did you know that boaters have not strayed from this change-culture ethos, too? Maybe it’s staying on top of the latest and greatest at the Seattle Boat Show, for example, when GPS technology was first adopted in the boating industry. Perhaps you went all in on non-copper paint when those alternative paints came on line. Or, there’s the water-maker technology that took hold in boating. Closer to home, did you know that Washington state pioneered waterskiing? Boaters have not strayed from flipping the script on boating policies, too. The list is long and one worth shouting from the rooftops. For example, boaters led the way in partnership with Recreational Boating Association of Washington and Northwest Marine Trade Association to make boater education mandatory in 2005. This program has never looked back, issuing over 400,000 boating cards during its life. The premise was straightforward: Boating safety laws were coming, so why not be at the table directing the conversation? Plus, safe boating is fun boating. A true win-win. What about asking to get taxed? Can you tell me about another industry and user group that has championed more taxes than boaters? If you do not know what I am referring to, then take a look at your boat registration. Wrapped up with the other fees, you will find five dollars per registration is directed towards protecting our waters from derelict vessels and invasive species. Want safer waters? Thank boaters (and again, thanks to RBAW and NMTA as well) for advocating for stronger boating-under-the-influence laws. Environmental policies, you ask? Well, did you know that the 68
industry co-founded the Clean Marina program and has continually looked at sensible policies around toxic boat paint? So, all that to say, as we think about the future of boating and laws, it’s fun to think about what boating will look like in twenty years, especially given this modus operandi for change (okay, I think it is fun). What issues will be front and center? And will boating continue to enjoy the current popularity it sees right now? The experts at CNBC seem to think so with their recent article titled, “Why the current boating industry boom could be around for a while.” And in the Pacific Northwest, will we continue to see the increased activity that we are currently witnessing even with some trends pointing in the wrong direction? The impasse around permitting for any in-water work and the continual shrinking of recreational fishing seasons that we endure every year both to come to mind there. As long-time boating advocate Norm Shultz said on a recent call, “Boaters buy boats to get away from it all.” That sentiment gives me the heeby-jeebies. If you all walk away, who’s minding the store? Take fuel taxes. Seriously, take fuel taxes, please. Why wouldn’t lawmakers continue to raise taxes on us if we are not paying attention and speaking up? As they say, the only constant out there is change. As we look down the fairway, let’s stay focused on the where the cheese may be tomorrow without fear, knowing that if it’s moved, it’s not a bad thing. Coupled with critical thinking and strategic planning, we could enjoy a sustained boating renaissance we have long sought. Peter Schrappen is Northwest Marine Trade Association’s Government Affairs Director and the Clean Boating Foundation’s Executive Director. Additionally, he serves on the boards of the Boating Safety Advisory Council, Washington Boating Alliance, and U.S. Superyacht Association.

R AC I N G SH E E T BY DOUG HANSEN
Big Sky Sailing Eastern exposure and some wild weather: DOUG HANSEN recounts this year’s truly unique Montana Cup Regatta on Flathead Lake. North Flathead Yacht Club sits on the north end of Flathead Lake in the town of Somers, Montana. Directions to the club are somewhat unconventional, involving heading down the back road behind the famous Del’s Bar & Grill and continuing down past the old mill. The club itself is an awesome arrangement of dry storage, grassy picnic area, and rows upon rows of sailboats all waiting to drop their lines and head out on the waters of Flathead Lake. Thirty-six of these sailboats were signed up for this year’s Montana Cup Regatta, with cruising classes ranging from nonflying sails to J24 One designs, and even a class of PHRF handicap racers going toe to toe in full fledged race boats. The racing format here is somewhat unique but certainly stands out against other clubs. The traditional wind is a morning thermal that kicks off at sunrise, holds until mid-morning, then dies off for several hours. In the afternoon, the breeze comes along from the west until just before sunset. With this being the case, the weekend’s racing was scheduled to kick off no later than 8 a.m. each day, with a scheduled “nap time” around lunch, before heading back to the racecourse in the afternoon to catch the evening breeze. Our Seattle contingent was made up of two crews sailing onboard a chartered J24 and a recently fully rebuilt Moore 24. Chartering a boat always comes with some unknowns and in our case, we learned our boat had not been raced hard in several years as a number of blocks began to fail as the traveler track came clear out of the boat on Friday’s practice. Thankfully, the damage was isolated to the mounting beam itself, and after a quick trip to the local hardware store for some lumber, a few frosty beverages, and a tube of epoxy, she was ready to race Saturday morning. It was all smiles as we put the final bolt in. The Saturday morning 7 a.m. boat call came very early for the fleet and a lot of sleepy faces were walking the docks (I assume they were fixing boats like us and not at Del’s Bar). At the skipper’s meeting, racers were warned that, due to a weather system coming into the area on Sunday, it was likely that the normal mid-day nap would not be in the agenda as the wind was forecasted to hold through the day with the incoming weather pattern bringing light winds, rain, and lightning. A very unconventional 72
southerly wind in the mid-teens settled and the nearly thirty-mile-long lake gave the waves plenty of fetch to build up. We soon found ourselves slamming upwind in rolling swells and surfing downwind. Racing got underway with some subtle shifts and a variable breeze as the waves continued to build. Fleets continued to race throughout the day with pauses between races while the Racing Committee adjusted the course and sailors ate. The wind peaked in the early afternoon in the low twenties and a wave state that would make you wonder if you were still in Montana. And just moments after finishing in an adrenaline-fueled spinnaker run, the wind began to shift and drop off, and the fleet found itself firing up their motors to head back to the dock. Coming in off the water just after 3 p.m. certainly made for a long day but there was still plenty of daylight left for racers to enjoy. Swimming, lawn games, an amazing two-piece band, and a wonderful catered dinner certainly made for a fantastic finish to an amazing day on the water. Sunday morning arrived with an almost literal bang as the first rain in months pelted the boats in the storage yard and campground. With the whole region being ravaged by fire, it was welcomed and we all tried to remind ourselves of that as we headed out onto the water to see what we could make of the day’s conditions. The light air held long enough for the committee to get a race course set, but unfortunate technical challenges resulted in the first race of the day being abandoned. As the fleet reset for another race, the wind dropped off to swirling puffs without much push and with thunderheads on the horizon, it was time to get the fleet off the water. The weather cooperated for a couple of hours, allowing boats to be packed up and campsites broken down before the final downpour began. We all hoped the storm would do wonders for the wild fires that have been roaring for weeks. For any sailor that enjoys a bit of adventure with their boat racing, a trip to North Flathead Yacht Club should be high on the list. Challenging water conditions, a thriving and welcoming sailing community, and an amazing venue in the heartland of the Big Sky Country certainly make this event the complete package.

Paradise without the Passport Domestic bliss: Fluttering palms, pristine beaches, and aquamarine waters await you off the shores of southeastern Florida. Palm tree branches gently rustling in the breeze and white sand beaches stretching forever; this is the alluring view seen from the sundeck of your yacht floating on the turquoise water. This enthralling tableau can be yours without a passport. A quick flight from pretty much anywhere in the United States, the southeastern shores of Florida offer storybook memories, picturesque backdrops, and delightful culinary diversity. Once aboard, you depart from Fort Lauderdale and enjoy a short cruise down along Miami’s vibrant shoreline and into Elliott Key. Located within Biscayne National Park, Elliott Key was once home to pineapple plantations but now adopts a more serene atmosphere. There is something for everyone in this peaceful area of the coast. Envelop yourself in the coral reefs, islands, and mangrove forests. Dolphins, turtles, and pelicans make the Biscayne Bay Lagoon their home as well as manatees, a Florida favorite. Enjoy a dive or snorkel through the underwater Maritime Heritage Trail that links six shipwrecks of varying sizes, which have settled

on the ocean floor over several centuries. For coastal views, stop over at Boca Chita Lighthouse, or take a guided tour at Convoy Point to learn more about the local ecosystems. Moving south you will discover Key Largo, set beautifully between Everglades National Park and North America’s only living coral barrier reef. While you might not find The Beach Boys here now, Key Largo has been coined the “Diving Capital of the World” and is an ideal location for water sports. One can kayak through the mangroves or jet ski along the coast. No trip to Key Largo is complete without a visit to Pennekamp Park, a popular snorkel site famous for its underwater “Christ of the Deep” statue and surrounding reefs. Just east of Key Largo lies Rodriguez Key, a charming and quaint island favored by gorgeous birds, who explore the protected shallow waters. The National Marine Sanctuary is full of endangered wildlife and their habitats: bird nests, feeding areas, and turtle-nesting beaches.
The next leg of your cruising itinerary will take you into the heart of the Florida Keys, Marathon Key. Known for some of the best fishing in the world, you can spend the day here catching tuna or grouper for your onboard chef to then prepare a delicious sea-to-plate meal for you and your guests. You will be surprised waking up in this part of the U.S. as it resembles a favored part of the Exuma islands with incredibly clear water and amazingly bright fish. Let your captain cruise by the famous seven-mile bridge to Little Palm Island where your guests can utilize all the amenities that this island has to offer, including the blue lagoon pool overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the pristine white sand beaches. Indulge in ultimate island isolation here with dotted seashell beaches, tropical foliage, and acres of pristine paradise—the perfect day for rest and relaxation. Rise and shine in beautiful Little Palm Island and cruise over to the southernmost point of the States, Key West. With its palm-lined streets and Caribbean air, Key West is the ultimate Florida Keys destination. Dock at Stock Island Marina and enjoy lunch or dinner at one of their three notable restaurants. One of the favored brunch spots is Blue Heaven, famous for their sky-high Key lime pie and lobster Eggs Benedict, along with the free-ranging chickens that cluck around the outdoor restaurant. Explore the town and all its gems, including Ernest Hemingway’s house that is now a museum. Admire the iconic pastel-hued, conch-style houses that populate the historic district. And as the sun goes down, you will truly understand why Key West is famous for her sunsets. After cruising through the Marquesas Keys, a beautiful uninhabited island chain, the yacht will make its way to the Dry Tortugas, another notable point of interest. The Dry Tortugas is a series of islands 70 miles from Key West with a rich history, mostly for its military associations, but also because the national park encompasses a sea of turtles, seabirds, and turquoise fish. This is
a special, isolated spot where the waves and tropical birds provide the perfect charter soundtrack. After a serene trip south to the Tortugas, it is time to make our way back up to the northernmost part of the Florida Keys, Elliott Key. Stop for a snorkel at Sandwich Cove, Hurricane Reef, or the Mandalay Wreck. Revel in your last full day of water toys, tender rides, and snorkeling while enjoying all Miami has to offer. Cruise by Stiltsville, lined with wooden stilted houses at the edge of Biscayne Bay, and experience your last night out at Seaspice or Kiki on the River, two Miami hot spots accessible by boat. Traveling by private yacht to this part of the United States is easy and carefree. Support local and regional programs for children and young adults through the charitable donation of your boat. The Pacific Marine Foundation is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization funding regional programs such as Northwest Youth Services, Sea Scouts, Boys & Girls Clubs, and local public school education foundations. A substantial tax savings and the possibility of a partial cash sale makes a charitable donation a very attractive alternative for any owner who is considering selling their well-found power or sailing yacht.
