Norm Blanchard W.O.O.D. Regatta Returns As we get closer to the end of the pandemic in the Seattle area, some beloved springtime events are making their triumphant return, including the 16th annual Norm Blanchard W.O.O.D. (Wooden Open & One Design) Regatta. After being forced to skip last year’s festivities, the Center for Wooden Boats will hold the regatta April 24-25 in the waters of Lake Union adjacent to their docks. On that weekend, the regatta will hold as many races as possible between noon and 5 p.m. on separate courses for small and large boats. Prizes will be awarded for different boat sizes, as well as for classic plastic boats. “What’s especially cool is that, in the name of access, if folks don’t have a boat, they can rent one of ours,” said Anna Coumou, communications consultant at the Center for Wooden Boats. She added, however, that participants must still pass the center’s checkout test. Sadly, there will still be one COVID-related change for this year, Coumou said. Due to necessary restrictions, the center will not be able to offer its signature post-race BBQ this year. In addition, social distance protocols will be maintained on the docks and the wearing of facemasks will be mandatory for entry. For more information on the center and this month’s event, visit the website at cwb.org/wood-regatta. PHOTO BY DAVID MILLAR

Maintain ‘Connections’ on Navionics App With boating season officially arriving next month, it might be a good time to schedule this year’s renewed Northwest boating activities and keep track of all your friends on the water as the warm weather arrives. To help sort it all out, Garmin.com has added a new Connections feature to its Navionics Boating app, which enables boaters to create a network of friends and family. Connections provides live positions for everyone in the network, which can be tracked for 24 hours at a time or stopped manually, depending on boaters’ needs. To plan a meetup with a group of friends, the live positions can also be shared simultaneously with everyone in the group. For individual connections, the app’s boat-to button can calculate the fastest route to specific spots, perhaps where a friend recommended a great fishing spot. The Connections service can also provide peace of mind for other boaters and loved ones on shore to keep track of a boat’s movements in case problems arise. In addition, the Navionics app connects to a vast database of the latest nautical charts, sonar readings, changes in depth contours, warnings of potential hazards, up-to-the-minute reports from crowdsourced boaters, and a link to the ActiveCaptain community; find the app on garmin.com or navionics.com.

[ GREEN BOATING ]

E-xcitment In E-Boating

From solar-powered yachts to outboard electric motors to truly innovative personal watercraft, there’s lots afloat in the world of e-boating this month: The latest Evo series of outboard electric motors from ePropulsion have virtually eliminated the need for plugging in at the dock for recharging through the magic of hydrogeneration. When the Evo motor is set to neutral and moves through the water under sail or being towed by a tender, the spinning propeller will recharge the batteries of the 48-volt system. As long as the recharging speed is between 4 and 10 knots, the ePropulsion motors can have an endless, pollution-free power source. Pure Watercraft, the Seattle-based manufacturer of electric boats and outboards, recently secured $35 million in financing to expand their business. The company now has support from venture capital firm L37 Ventures, Duffy Boats, and former Amazon executives, said Pure Watercraft CEO Andrew Rebele. The funds, he said, will go toward adding new employees and expanding production of its line of outboard electric motors, pontoon boats, bass fishing boats, and rigid inflatables. Taiga, a Canadian maker of electric personal watercraft (PWC) and snowmobiles, is going public via a merger with Canaccord Genuity Growth III Corp. The move, estimated to be worth C$100 million, will help increase production of PWCs to approximately 2,000 vehicles per year by the second half of 2021. Taiga made waves in 2019 with the release of the all-electric Orca jet-ski, sparking demand for more environmentally conscious PWCs on the market. Once it is completed later this month, the merger is expected to increase the market capitalization of the Montreal-based Taiga to C$537 million.

Volkswagen is expanding into the electric yacht market with a new solar-powered catamaran, the Silent-Yacht 50, set to launch in 2022. Partnering with German boatbuilder Silent-Yachts and Spanish carmaker CUPRA, Volkswagen is using its modular electric drive matrix (MEB) platform to turn sunlight into energy that will charge six batteries modified for marine use. The batteries will produce 500 kilowatts of power to the engine. Volkswagen said it expects to ramp up production next year to produce roughly 50 zero-emission boats by next year.

The Windermere Cup Is Still On! Great news! Despite the announcement from the Seattle Yacht Club that it has canceled all planned 2021 Opening Day festivities due to the ongoing COVID pandemic, Windermere Real Estate and the University of Washington are still hosting the annual Windermere Cup Regatta. On Saturday, May 1, the beloved regatta will return after a one-year absence as the UW Huskies will race against the crew from Cal Berkeley. Most other traditional Opening Day events, such as the log boom and the boat parade, have been canceled, and there is no international team racing this year. But, in a statement from the Opening Day Trio—Admiral Chris Falskow, Admiralette Karol Cahan and Vice Admiral Pete Rosvall— PHOTO OF 2019 REGATTA BY SCOTT EKLUND / REDBOX PICTURES

the SYC team said there will be an online virtual parade, consisting of “a streamed collection of submitted videos and photos from the boating community.” The theme of the virtual parade will be “Rock Around the Dock.” Although race fans will not be allowed to gather at the Montlake Cut, all the races will be livestreamed so that fans can root for the Dawgs from home, at the dock, or floating aboard in the lake. [ SPRING SAILING KICK-OFF ]

R AC I N G SH E E T BY DOUG HANSEN

Race ‘Round The Rock

PHOTO BY DOUG MACKENZIE, MACKENZIE IMAGES

DOUG HANSEN recounts the first sailing race of the Center Sound Series season, the highly anticipated return to Blakely Rock. After a literal year of waiting, March 6 had finally arrived and it was time to pick up where the world left off. We are, of course, talking about the Corinthian Yacht Club of Seattle’s Center Sound Series (cycseattle.org/ Racing) and the traditional spring season kickoff race around Blakely Rock. This year, the day was set for a spectacular showing with winds blowing, sun shining, and a fleet of 70 boats taking to the water. Crews were really getting after it with wind speeds steadily into the mid-20s and gusts pushing 30 knots plus; blade jibs and reefed mainsails were all the rage. As the fleet settled in and sailed around, it became apparent that there was one boat missing, the race committee. Unfortunately, the iconic red committee boat, YC5, had a failed steering system and after a rapid diagnostic by some handy folks on the dock, it was determined that the boat was out of commission for the day. Not taking no for an answer, the race committee quickly formed up a plan, transferred the flags onto another smaller support boat, and headed out onto the water to start a race. A quick start line was set up off the Meadow Point buoy and the call went out on the radio that it was to be a shorter course, skipping the normal downwind northern mark and making for a straight shot to Blakely Rock and back to Meadow Point. The postponement flag came down, class flags went up, and before we knew it, the racing was underway as the fleets headed south along the Shilshole marina breakwater. The wind stabilized a little as the day continued onward, but it was still far from tame as the fleet worked out from beneath the Magnolia Bluff

and past the West Point lighthouse. Coming out into the clear air of the Sound brought the teeth of the wind into full view and things began to get even more sporty as the fleet headed south along the Bainbridge Island shoreline. With the breeze gusting above 25 knots and a massive ebb tide flowing along with the wind, conditions were perfect for a sporty flat-water kite run and that is exactly what came to pass as the fleet began to round the infamous rock and set their spinnakers. All the while, daffodils dotted the water having been dropped from boats in memory of sailing photographer Kelly O’Neil, who was taken from our community well before her time. The downwind made a day for the light boats with big kites as the leaders skipped effortlessly across the water and through the fleet heading upwind. Glory, the winner of the TP52 fleet was able to finish the entire course in just over an hour and a half, easily stepping up to high teens of boat speed on the downwind run. In the PHRF classes, it was a day for the J/Boats with seven of the top ten corrected time finishers wearing the logo on their mainsail. It was the J/105 Creative that took home the overall win after a fantastic upwind beat that put them way out in front of the competition. After an entire year off the water for many, the day was a welcome return to the sport we love and a wonderful launch into the spring racing calendar. Things are full speed ahead this season with the normal local events in April and May along with a few temporary events to replace the international races cut from the 2021 schedule. 31

[ SMART GADGETS AND STYLISH PRODUCTS THAT REALLY FLOAT OUR BOAT ]

G O ODS & GE A R BY RANDY WOODS

With a Little Kelp From Your Friends Looking for a salty bit of crunch that actually helps the marine environment? California-based 12 Tides takes organically farmed ocean kelp from a small-scale regenerative aquaculture company and bakes them into tasty, protein-rich, gluten-free puffed chips. Using kelp for food is considered a “zero input” form of farming, requiring no pesticides or fertilizers, and having no impact on arable land or fresh-water resources. To help complete the consumption circle, 12 Tides also donates 1% of its proceeds to support restoration of endangered Pacific Ocean kelp forests. Available on three flavors: sea salt, chile pepper, and “everything.” $19.99 for a pack of four bags // 12tides.com. 32

Roll Out, Blow Up, Paddle On The collapsible hybrid Karve Kayak from Paddle North makes it easy to get out on the water with minimal bulk and set-up time. The 12’ model can be propelled either standing up, like a paddleboard, or sitting down, like a standard kayak. The larger 14’ model is large enough for two paddlers and can hold up to 600 pounds. Weighing just 32 pounds and made of military-grade, drop-stitch PVC, the Karve, when inflated, is remarkably rigid and durable, and moves efficiently through the water with speed and maneuverability; currently available for pre-ordering for delivery by late May. $1,199 // paddlenorth.com.

Spare the Rods, Don’t Spoil the Fishing No matter what sweet fishing spot you visit, you must protect your gear as much as you keep the location secret. This sturdy rod tube bag from Filson will surely tackle the job. The lightweight tube has enough room for up to six 9-foot, four-piece fishing rods, and the hard plastic case is covered in 500D Cordura ripstop nylon and can be accessed via a two-way coated zipper. The endcaps are also wrapped in padding for extra protection. The tough nylon-webbing handle and removable, adjustable shoulder strap makes it easy to carry to remote areas in sunshine or nasty weather. $175 // filson.com.

Power Flowing Like Water There are very few energy sources in this world that emit water vapor as effluent; one is a space-age device called a fuel cell, based on technology similar to what was used by NASA to power the Apollo moon missions. Now, this super-efficient and environmentally friendly generator can be used to power your next boat excursion. Using liquid methanol and water as a feedstock, the EFOY Comfort fuel-cell system generates electricity as the methanol reacts to oxygen in the ambient air, which keeps your batteries charged and produces nothing more than water and a tiny amount of carbon dioxide. For added safety, the integrated charge regulator constantly monitors the charge status of 12- or 24-volt batteries, allowing the fuel cell to switch itself on automatically and off again once the battery is charged. $4,699 // available from Fisheries Supply in Fremont, fisheriessupply.com. Let Your Freestone Flag Fly For those living in the Pacific Northwest, there’s a communal feeling of togetherness in our connection to the region’s natural beauty, whether you live in the Evergreen State, the Beaver State, the Gem State, Big Sky Country, or the Last Frontier. To find a way to capture this shared spirit, Spokane-based outdoor apparel company The Great PNW created the Freestone Flag, depicting the area’s crystal blue waters, forest green woods, and sunset-tinted mountains on a black background. Made of sublimated polyester, the flag measures 3’ x 5’ and includes two heavy-duty grommets for hanging. Show you pride for the “Upper Left” by flying these attractive colors on your next boating trip. $29.99 // thegreatpnw.com. Share Your Love of the Sea For that special someone sharing your life topside, show them how much they mean to you with these nautical-themed, low-profile rings from Maggie Lee Designs. The Rope Knot ring, made of medium 14K yellow or white gold, features a classic full square knot of twisted rope, signifying your shared love of the open water. Customization is available to add a gemstone and sturdy bezel. Also, there’s a Rope and Anchor design, made of 14K yellow, white or rose gold, that can be customized with a gem set in the anchor loop. With either design, they’ll know you’re bound fast to their heart. Rings can be ordered in sizes 4-10. Rope and Knot ring, $880.00; Anchor ring, $420 (prices for size 6) // maggieleedesigns.com. 33

Hunt Ocean 63 & The 63 PNW Flybridge Beautifully crafted, the stunning Hunt Ocean 63 Series is now available with a Northwest-ready extended flybridge and galley aft arrangement. Designed by the iconic C. Raymond Hunt Design Studio, the Hunt Ocean 63 is crafted for the discerning yachts person, offering speed and performance in nearly any sea conditions, as well as a truly custom design, with options tailored to the boater’s specific wants and needs. The Hunt Ocean 63 is built with the owner’s comfort in mind, sharing the same hull design and handling characteristics of her military and North American pilot sister ships. The hull itself is designed to American Bureau of Shipping certification standards, with a 20-degree transom deadrise that provides a stable rise in the roughest conditions. Powered by twin Volvo Penta IPS 1350 engines, it cruises at a pleasant 26 knots and reaches 31 in open waters; on longer passages, throttle back to 10 knots and extend your range to an impressive 1,150 nautical miles. The design choices are all yours here: The galley can be placed on the main deck, or down below, providing the option for four en suite cabins to host family and friends. Or, choose three bedrooms and then perhaps use the extra space as an office or private retreat for work or play while 40

aboard. (Crew quarters are also an option.) The interior itself features extensive brightwork and sophisticated teak-and-holly decking, plus you can work with Hunt’s curated team of interior designers to select finishes that reflect your own personal style. The main salon provides a generous space for dining and entertaining, with storage cleverly tucked into unobtrusive cabinetry and below decks. At the helm, you’ll find fingertip controls with IPS joystick docking, Humphree interceptors and stabilization, plus a full suite of Garmin navigation instruments. Plus, as part of a collaboration with Worth Avenue Yachts in Seattle, the Hunt 63 can also be built in an express, flybridge or motoryacht style with an 80-square-foot flybridge extension available with or without dinghy davit. The new space adds plenty of room to carry a dinghy up to 9.5’, freeing up the swim platform for easy access to the water. The Northwest-ready extension also could provide cover in inclement weather or can be outfitted to create some sunny real estate for a lounging, dining, or barbeque area on those glorious summer days—solidifying the Hunt Ocean 63 as an all-weather all-star.

Plentiful with amenities for long-range coastal cruising, this 2004 Kadey-Krogen 39 Pilothouse has ventured safely and comfortably to Alaska and back, and throughout the Salish Sea, solidifying this build’s longstanding reputation as a world-class sea trawler. Satin finished teak lends a beautiful warmth to the interior, the large windows and portholes allow for tons of natural light to pour in, and the 6’10” headroom in both the salon and galley lend a spacious air. The main salon features both an L-settee and a convertible settee for guests to stay over, with storage underneath both. Forward to starboard, the compact galley is equipped with a recently upgraded Sea Freeze fridge and freezer, three-burner stove, oven, stainless steel sink, and plenty of smart storage spots. Down the curved staircase, 46

the private stateroom houses an island queen bed, storage drawers, and a vanity. Louvered doors located throughout the boat allow for plenty of air flow and the pilothouse has two watertight Dutch doors that open to enjoy some fresh air while underway. The sanitation system has been upgraded with a new Dometic electric head to help conserve water and the LED lights throughout will also conserve power while at anchor. That aforementioned pilothouse contains a helm station flanked by chart tables and easy-to-reach controls, as well as a classic wood captain’s wheel, which only adds to its charm and appeal. Atop, the flybridge helm is equipped with Furuno navigation and areas to sit on both sides of the captain’s chair, as well as a settee behind the helm, perhaps the perfect spot to sit and enjoy the cruise on your next adventure aboard.

ELECTRIC

Exquisite, elegant design. Smart, sustainable tech. These new e-boat imports might just be the wave of the future.

56

Electric boats have become more and more popular in recent years thanks to both their economical and environmental appeal. Until recently, however, speed and style have never been their main selling points. This is beginning to change with the influx of two new e-boat designs from Sweden and one from Canada that will turn heads as fast as they reduce carbon footprints. Not only are these battery-powered wonders beautiful to look at, they appeal to the adventurous boater’s need for speed, fun, and endurance. By Randy Woods

CURRENT 57

SLEEKER THAN AN EEL Scandinavia has long been famous for its knack for spare modern design, and Swedish e-boat manufacturer X Shore (xshore.com) is no exception. Founded by entrepreneur and environmentalist Konrad Bergström (picture a hybrid of Elon Musk and Richard Branson), X Shore began working on battery-powered vessels in 2012 and developed a prototype of a 100% electric boat in 2016. The latest version, the Eelex 8000, is a 26-foot, open-tender vessel that seats six to eight people comfortably and features a low stern, a muscular prow, and a streamlined hull. These features and even the model name itself were inspired by another highly charged aquatic denizen; the South American electric eel that appears on every boat as a solid bronze bow ornament.

58

Despite the Eelex 8000’s elegant, deceptively streamlined design, it is packed with technology. It uses an array of sensors that capture about 150 data points of the vessel’s environment every second—variables such as boat location, temperature, humidity, air pressure, and pH-levels of the water—to ensure optimum battery and engine performance. The 8000 can also be unlocked and turned on remotely with X Shore’s smartwatch app, while remote diagnostics and “man overboard” features provide enhanced safety measures. One of the key differences between e-boat and fossil-fuel-based drivetrains is the sound—or lack of it. “At low speeds, around 5 to 10 mph, there is zero sound,” said Jenny Keisu, CEO of X Shore. “We’ve even had to work on noises from small water pumps since they become so noticeable with the lack of traditional noise you’d hear from a diesel engine. You can

ELECTRIC CURRENT easily have a conversation, without strain, and the lack of exhaust fumes is very noticeable.” The 225-kilowatt output from the motor translates to just under 300 brake horsepower (bhp), with high torque at low rpm, Keisu said. This makes the motor perform like an engine twice its size, resulting in snappy acceleration to 35 knots at top speed while cruising at 25 knots. “The high-performance electric motor is proven and will outlast its combustion counterparts,” she added. “And not by a little.” The earth-friendly elements don’t stop with the engine, either. The Eelex uses the more sustainable cork wood and flax fiber instead of teak for the deck, and carbon fiber for the hull, which comes in hues of moss green, sand, or coffee. The battery pack in the Eelex is no bigger than what one would find in a Tesla automobile. At 120 kilowatt-hours, they provide an

effective range of about 100 nautical miles at low speeds, or 50 nautical miles at cruising speed. Using a standard electric vehicle charger, the batteries charge from empty to full in just 5 hours. X Shore’s up-and-coming e-boat is suited best for use in lakes and as near-shore tenders, where rides start and stop at the same port. Fresh off its dazzling appearance last month at the Palm Beach International Boat Show, the Swedish import has already secured deliveries to a few customers in the United States. “We knew this boat would need to be different than anything consumers have seen, electric or otherwise,” Keisu said. “We expect for [the U.S.] to be our most important market in a short amount of time.”

TAKING FLIGHT While saving the environment is the main goal with all e-boats, there’s no denying the “coolness factor” of flying. The Candela Speed Boat Seven (candelaspeedboat.com; photos on page 57) is considered the world’s first electric hydrofoil watercraft, debuted at the end of 2020 to rave reviews not only in the boating press but in business journals, such as The Economist. Like its X Shore competitor, this other Swedish e-boat maker has begun soaring into the U.S. market. No, the Candela Seven can’t actually fly, of course. But the effect of the hydrofoils lifting the hull three to four feet over the surface creates an uncanny feeling of piloting a roaring jet just above the waves—only without the roar. The whisper-quiet, 55-kilowatt electric outboard can rarely be heard over the natural wind noise. Candela even uses aircraft-related nicknames to describe the boat’s performance. The hydrofoils are “wings” and the software that controls them comes from what is called the “flight controller.” The moment the hull lifts up onto the hydrofoils, at about 14 to 17 knots, is referred to as a “takeoff.” In shallower water, the five-foot-long foil wing is fully retractable into the hull amidships, allowing the 25-foot craft to operate like a conventional boat at lower speeds. The motor can tilt upwards, providing an overall draft of about about 2.3 feet. The true energy savings begins when the Seven lifts above the surface, said Mikael Mahlberg, communications manager at Candela. With just the wing and three slender struts to provide friction with the water, drag is reduced substantially over a comparable planing boat. Even in choppy seas, with wave heights of four to five feet, the Seven “doesn’t slam into oncoming waves,” it merely rises above and cuts through them, he said. As a result, energy consumption is 80% less than that of fossil-fuel boats. The top speed is about 30 knots, but running at 18 to 24 horsepower the Seven can achieve a cruising speed of 20 knots, with a range of 50 nautical miles via its 40 kilowatt-hour batteries. The key to its remarkable stability is the boat’s high-tech brain. The wing below the surface is inherently unstable on its own, Mahlberg explained, “but the boat keeps its balance on the water by constantly adjusting the foil, much the way a fighter plane moves the surface on its wings.” The software also relies on data from a gyroscope, a GPS

system, a wave-height sensor, and a barometer to make up to 100 automatic adjustments in the wing per second. The pilot only needs to turn the wheel in a desired direction and the flight controller banks the boat into a stable, smooth turn. About 30 Candela Seven boats have been sold so far in Europe, Mahlberg said. Since it became available via Denison Yachting and Green Yachts just in November of last year, sales in the U.S. are understandably in the single digits, but the company is still pleased with the initial attention the Candela Seven attracted. Expect to see more on the water this summer. PEDALING AWAY THE CARBON FOOTPRINT Could any marine transportation have a smaller carbon footprint than an electric boat? How about one that is powered by your own feet? French-Canadian firm E-Catamaran (e-catamaran.com) is making that pedal-powered dream a reality with the release of the CECLO Cruise—a 13-foot, four-person craft that takes e-boating to a new level. This is not your standard arduous slog on a lakeside paddleboat for tourists. It’s a power-assisted catamaran, using a 500-watt Yamaha electric outboard to tool around at about 3-5 knots. The pedaling is smooth and easy, with very little resistance, providing some exercise for the riders without being too taxing, making it the perfect tender to bring aboard your yacht. Just start pedaling and the engine automatically starts up. A smaller, two-seat version, called the CECLO Hybrid, is electric as well, but it does have an all-manual pedaling option for those who want to put their pedals to the metal with 100% human power. Power to the CECLO Cruise is stored in a 12V lithium battery that needs about 4.5 hours to be charged fully, providing about four hours of use. The Cruise is marketed towards people “who enjoy cruising and exploring their favorite waterways and entertaining on the water,” said Marissa Evans, communications manager for E-Catamaran. The Cruise also comes with a center console, cupholders, and a solar USB charger, Evans said. All of the six models of CECLO boats are fully customizable, with options to include covers, bimini tops, tow trailers, and a choice between Italian composite and full-cork decking.

TI G H T LI N E S BY MARK YUASA

The Beauty Of The Beast Fisherman MARK YUASA shares his tips and tricks for hooking the beast that is the lingcod.

As the saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Take for example, the lingcod. Commonly referred to as a “buckethead,” it is perhaps one of the ugliest creatures in the sea, with their wide-mouth, gnarly canine-like teeth, buggy eyes, prickly-sharp dorsal and pectoral fins, and mottled brown and gray skin. Despite their beast over beauty appearance, anglers embrace them as a resilient fighter when hooked, and then later, a delightful eating fish. What really got me hooked on catching these magnificent creatures occurred more than a decade ago, when I battled a 50-pound lingcod in southeast Alaska. To date, it’ll go down as one of my most memorable moments as I met one of my tougher fishing opponents. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity each spring and summer to pursue lingcod in local marine waters, where their population have rebounded after declining sharply in the late 1990s. “It is really exciting to see more fishing opportunities opening up in 2021 and 2022 off our coast,” said Heather Hall, coastal fish policy manager of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. “Being careful in how we manage our resources has allowed us to access more deep-water areas that had been closed for 15 years.” Fishing for lingcod and other bottomfish species off Ilwaco, Westport, La Push, and Neah Bay is now open daily through October 16. Do note: The northern coastal ports of La Push and Neah Bay are closed due to COVID-19 precautions, so the closest access points are Sekiu in the western Strait and Westport on the south-central coast. A non-migratory fish, lingcod prefer an uneven bottom along rocky pinnacles, ledges, drop-offs, reefs, and jetties. They’re insatiable predators and will eat just about anything like flounder, kelp greenling, rockfish, sculpin, octopus. For gear, bring a stout 7- to 8-foot fishing pole and reel filled with 50-pound braided line, a slip swivel, and an 8- to 16-ounce lead ball attached to a 7/0 barbless circle hook on top trailed by another hook with a large-size herring or live flounder. Others use a variety of metal jigs, plastic sanddab, grubs, squid, and octopus lures; or an artificial scampi-type jig. Many anglers start off their day by dropping pieces of Berkley Power Bait herring strips on small hooks to the sandy bottom at depths of 30 to 80 feet to catch live flounder for bait. 62

Before jumping on the boat, anglers should also carefully read up on current regulations including catch limits, closure zones, and restrictions. The retention of yelloweye rockfish is prohibited in all marine areas. For details, go to wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regulations/halibut. Lastly, making sure your boat is seaworthy and in proper working order is vital off the coast. Crossing the bar at ports can be dangerous during spring months due to fast changing weather and rough ocean conditions and you’ll have battle enough to do in pulling in those lingcod. KEY SPRING/EARLY SUMMER FISHING DATES CHINOOK: Winter Chinook is open at Sekiu (Marine Catch Area 5) now through April 30. LINGCOD: Opens in the Sekiu-Port Angeles areas (5 and 6), San Juan Islands (7), and Puget Sound (8, 9, 10, 11 and 13) from May 1-June 15. Hood Canal is closed for lingcod. HALIBUT: Opens in the Port Angeles/Puget Sound areas (6 to 10 only) from April 22-May 22 and June 3-26 on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays; and May 28-30. Sekiu (5) is open May 6-22 on Thursdays and Saturdays; May 28-30; and June 3-26 open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Neah Bay/La Push (3 and 4) is open May 6-22 and June 3-26 on Thursdays and Saturdays; and May 28 and 30. Westport (2) is open May 6-23 on Thursdays and Sundays; and May 27 only; and could reopen June 17, 20, 24 and 27 if catch quota remains. Ilwaco (1) is open May 6-23 and June 3-27 on Thursdays and Sundays; and May 27. Halibut fisheries are quota driven and areas could close sooner than expected. Mark Yuasa is a longtime fishing and outdoors writer. Born and raised in Seattle, and a UW alum, Mark joined the Northwest Marine Trade Association in 2017 as the Director of Grow Boating Programs after 33 years at The Seattle Times. He also volunteers with the BSA Chief Seattle Council and National Order of the Arrow organizations, and enjoys fishing for salmon and other fish species in local waterways.

O N WATCH BY PETER SCHRAPPEN

Snakes And Ladders Columnist PETER SCHRAPPEN pulls from one author’s analogy of snakes and dragons to outline the boating issues rearing their heads the next legislative session.

Looking for a book to peruse? I suggest Dragons and Snakes by David Kilcullen (Oxford University Press; 2020). While the author uses dragons (think countries like Russia and China) and snakes (he’s talking smaller threats like variants of Al-Qaeda) to lay out various threats to the United States in a post-Cold War period, you could apply the same framing devices to the boating world. More specifically, here’s a description of the book: “Just a few years ago, people spoke of the U.S. as a hyperpower—a titan stalking the world stage with more relative power than any empire in history.” Yet as early as 1993, CIA director James Woolsey pointed out that although Western powers had “slain a large dragon” by defeating the Soviet Union in the Cold War, they now faced a “bewildering variety of poisonous snakes.”” Let’s turn to boating now. Yes, while we look to come out of COVID-19 in some form or fashion, boating has seen a moment in the sun. Look at this data point: boat sales were up by 13% in 2020 over last year. However, given this resurgence, our collective guards are up, now more than ever, as the legislature convenes in Olympia (okay, convenes virtually with minimal activity happening at the state capitol) for the 105-day legislative session. Where are we with big hairy dragons and sneaky snakes? As for dragons, I am pleased to report that the talk around adding a luxury tax to vessels over $100,000 has lost considerable steam. Who’s to say if this dragon is slayed once and for all (probably not), but this tax has not made it into any of tax and budget packages. The dragon remains tucked away under our bed. Another dragon is the North of Falcon proceedings, currently underway as we go to print, that determine the recreational, commercial, and tribal fishing rules. Each year, recreational anglers see less opportunity as a result of the negotiations between the state of Washington and the tribes. The state advocates on our behalf (in theory), and we hope and pray that recreational salmon fishing does not fall victim to the declining salmon runs. Also, keep in mind that the commercial fishing salmon seasons are set here, too. Yes, the same commercial fishing industry that still uses gillnets to catch all kinds of wild and hatchery salmon. It’s complicated, it’s a mess, and it’s a scary dragon. (If you want to see how a recreational angling group is looking to smite this dragon, bookmark www.FishNorthwest.org to keep track of the lawsuit that’s making its way through the courts.) If dragons weren’t enough, Mr. Kilcullen spends considerable time in his book about the danger of snakes. They are sneakier than dragons, able to adapt, and pick, pick, pick away at their foe. Naturally, there are lots of snakes, too. How about the state Department of Revenue wanting to change tax laws in a 50-page bill to raise taxes on boat owners? In the eleventh hour, the recreational boating gaggle of lobbyists got wind of this idea and leapt into action to have this language removed. Whew, that was a close one. There are other dragons and snakes we could play with in future columns. Given the probability of unintended consequences, one day’s friendly puppy of a bill could morph into a dragon years from now as these issues play out. As President Truman used to say, “If you wanted a friend in politics, get a dog.” I’d add: “And don’t forget to set up your Google search and keyword alert, too.” Peter Schrappen is Northwest Marine Trade Association’s Government Affairs Director and the Clean Boating Foundation’s Executive Director. Additionally, he serves on the boards of the Boating Safety Advisory Council, Washington Boating Alliance, and U.S. Superyacht Association.

ASK N I G E L BY NIGEL BARRON

Surveying the Scene You’ve bought a boat! Now, expert NIGEL BARRON lets you in on what to take note of —and fix—from the all-important survey. One of the ways we can really tell the economy is humming are the amount of surveys a boatyard sees in a week, and the type and quality of those boats being checked—and local boatyards are buzzing right now. The process of buying a boat is sometimes a little intimidating. Before getting into full research mode, start with establishing your budget and getting a sense of what you want. You should know what kind of boating you want to do, and who you are going to do it with. Assess your own skill, as well. Be sure you are prepared to do the kind of boating you desire. Knowing this will prevent you from acquiring more than you can handle. Once you have a clear picture in your mind, the fun of finding the right vessel awaits! So, now you’ve found the One. You’re going to need a survey. This has the dual purpose of helping you figure out what the boat needs, and, if you’re getting a loan, a value of the potential asset. The survey is also going to list deficiencies that, in some cases, the bank is going to give you a timeframe to correct. There are specific things you should be doing immediately after you buy your new boat. When you hauled the boat out for survey, you probably only had an hour or two out of the water. Now that the boat belongs to you, figure out when the bottom was last painted and schedule a refresher painting if needed. Look through the survey and figure out what other out-of-the-water items can be taken care of at the same time as the bottom paint. It’s likely that among the items on the survey, there was at least one thru-hull that needed to be exercised or replaced. Look closely at the running gear. The surveyor may have noted the amount of wear on the cutlass bearing or the anodes. It’s also a nice time to give the hull a quick buff and wax. One of the most expensive parts of your boat is the engine. I recommend to people that they should baseline the mechanical side. This is as simple as spending the money to get the fluids and filters changed. It lets you know exactly when the fluids and filters were new. Unless you have really good mechanical records, it’s prudent to look at the condition of other belts and hoses, and maybe consider a valve set adjustment or new injectors. The exhaust elbow is another common place to have problems. Check on the coolant and see if it makes sense to take the cooling bundle out or to run the descaling solution and put in new coolant. If you have a sailboat, after the engine, the next most expensive parts are the mast and winches. Take the winches apart and look inside. Have they 68

just had grease added or have they been serviced? Most winch manufacturers have how-to documents on their websites. It’s also good to go up the mast and take a look at the sheaves and the rigging terminations, particularly if you did not get a rigging survey. Look for any bulges in the standing rigging, broken strands at the terminations, or excessive wear on lines and sheaves. Sight the mast up the mainsail track and make sure it’s all nicely in-column. If you’re not comfortable making adjustments to your mast, find a yard or company with a rigger. If you look around the Puget Sound region, I doubt you’ll find a single brokerage that isn’t asking for listings. With interest rates at historical lows and the pandemic prompting people to reevaluate their vacations, more and more people are getting on the water. You could be one of them! Nigel Barron was born in England and developed his sea legs at an early age. He is currently the project manager at CSR Marine in Seattle, where he has worked for 15 years, first as a rigger, then an installer, and now in his current role. He is also the captain of Zvi, a Reichel-Pugh designed and McConaghy-built custom race boat from Seattle.

P ORT OF CALL BY LORI EASTES

Hawaiian Paradise Enjoy the lush, natural beauty of the Hawaiian Islands from the comfort and splendor of your own private yacht charter.

Famous for massive volcanoes, lush landscapes, and waters teeming with marine life, Hawaii offers an incomparable travel experience—and what better way to experience this tropical oasis than on your own private charter yacht? Introducing your ticket to paradise, the Noelani, a highly sought after 75-foot Sunseeker Predator yacht. An exceptionally spacious yacht, she features three ample staterooms, a full galley, and accommodations for up to six overnight guests. The two 12-cylinder twin-turbocharged, 1300 horsepower engines offer up a top speed of 36 knots, significantly faster than your average charter yacht. Private charters aboard Noelani are designed to be among the best experiences of your life. Nowhere else in Hawaii can you get a personal masseuse, professional crew, and chauffeured limousine all in one, as well as a private chef to take care of any foodie request, whether you’re feeling a plate of ocean-fresh poke or classic Luna stew. In total, Hawaii is made up of 137 tropical islands and some are among the most renowned vacation destinations in the world. Aboard the incomparable Noelani, you’ll experience 360-degree views of the most striking natural landscapes in the world, no matter which of these isles you choose to visit.

72

KAUAI Known as the “Garden Isle,” Kauai lies 105 miles across the Kauai Channel northwest of Oahu. Home to the famous Waimea Canyon State Park, this island offers some of the most incredible natural landscapes in the world with massive mountains covered in lush green landscaping. It’s no wonder over 1.5 million tourists visit the island each year. A perfect day in Kauai begins by waking up in your comfy queen-sized bed aboard Noelani. Allow the chef to prepare the breakfast of your dreams (a spread of locally grown fruit is sure to refresh you from your slumber). Then head ashore for a private tour of Waimea Canyon State Park. Also known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, the park features stunning red soil that can be seen from miles away and panoramic views of crested buttes, rugged crags, and deep valley gorges for miles. Adventure seekers, be sure to take a hike through these mountains and experience nature at your fingertips before heading back for a sunset dinner cruise. OAHU Third largest of the Hawaiian Islands and a tourism and shopping haven, Oahu is home to over one million people (roughly two-thirds of the entire Hawaiian population). The diamond-shaped island is divided by enormous mountain ranges. For a bird’s eye view, we recommend taking a private helicopter ride. Imagine seeing the enormous rock formations

Or, you could spend the day entirely on the water as Lanai has incredible snorkeling and fishing that you can experience from your own yacht. MAUI Known as “The Valley Isle” of Hawaii, Maui is packed with world-famous spots. The landscape is extremely diverse—black sand beaches, bright green mountains, and massive waterfalls can all be found and explored. Wake up gently, perhaps with a cup of tea or lemon water, as you watch the striking Hawaiian sunrise, then begin the day with a boat ride around the island. Feast your eyes on the famous Hana Highway. This 64.4-mile-long road stretches from Kahului to the town of Hana in east Maui. The view from a car simply cannot compare to the view from the ocean. When you’re ready to go on land, let your captain drop you off at the quaint village of Lahaina for some shopping and authentic Hawaiian coffee. Enjoy the stunning mountain scenery before making your way to the wharf where Noelani will take you out for a whale-watching cruise. You can also visit waterfalls, go for a hike, or walk around the Maui Gardens—Maui is full of endless opportunities for adventure.

from thousands of feet above the ground. A view like this is truly priceless. Whenever you’re ready for a bite, allow your crew to prepare a beachside lunch with a local assortment of seafood. MOLOKAI On Molokai, Kalaupapa National Historical Park is a beautiful place to go hiking. (The striking ocean views are truly a sight to see.) Relax with family and friends as your captain gives you an exclusive tour of the different islands that are flush with giant rock formations and towering cliffs and surround the larger 38-mile-long island of Molokai. Be sure to visit Papohaku Beach, one of Hawaii’s largest white sand beaches. This secluded beach feels like your own private island. Spend the afternoon going kayaking while watching the sunset, then enjoy a tiki-lit dinner on the beach before heading back to the yacht for bed. LANAI The sixth largest of the Hawaiian Islands with over 89,000 acres of countryside, Lanai is located just a short 9 miles from Maui. For being a small island, Lanai sure has plenty to keep you busy: Begin your day with a breakfast on the sundeck before heading to Lanai for a resort spa day. Relax at one of the many luxurious resorts featured on the island; if you prefer to stay moving, tee off for a game of golf at Manele Golf Course.

ISLAND OF HAWAI’I While the Island of Hawai’i encompasses over 4,028 square miles of land, only 13 percent of the Hawaiian population lives here. The largest city is Hilo, which is home to beautiful beaches such as the famous James Kealoha Beach and the world’s tallest mountain, Mauna Kea. (Measured from its seafloor base to its highest peak, Mauna Kea is indeed taller than even Mount Everest!) Have your captain take you to some of the most remote locations in all of Hawaii here. Soak up the sun on your private beach or get a personal tour of the gigantic rock formations around the island; watch as the lava oozes from the side of the mountain before pouring into the cold Pacific waters. Get up-close and personal with the Hawaiian shoreline and see what landlocked individuals can’t. Be sure to go for an exhilarating manta ray night dive on the west side of the big island. Here you will find massive rays attracted by plankton, which in turn are attracted by bright lights. To catch the plankton, the rays swoop through the water with their mouths open before gracefully swimming through the light beams, sometimes almost touching their spectators. This natural phenomenon is truly a sight to see. Wind things down with a relaxing night of wine drinking and stargazing before heading to bed. Aboard Noelani, the Hawaiian Islands are truly your oyster. Whether you choose to sit back and relax aboard the yacht or get adventurous by hiking, snorkeling, and swimming, we guarantee a blissful charter experience full of great memories to last forever.
