Escape Plan

Creative Director Lou Maxon My summertime lake escape

We all have our “happy place,” don’t we? That spot we escape to—sometimes just in our minds— when we want to get away from it all. For me, the place that calls to me over the long winter months and then tugs on my heart strings every time I have to leave is our family’s lake cabin. It’s pure magic, particularly in the summer. The peaceful mornings spent cuddled in a blanket on the deck watching the sun rise over the trees and glassy water, followed by a day of play along the shoreline, the kids jumping off the dock or hopping in and out of kayaks, while the adults laze on the “floating island” inflatable with a drink. (And this year we’ve added a brand-new pontoon boat to the party for fishing, cruising, tubing, and more. Call it an occupational hazard.) Hence this issue is all about finding your boating bliss as we greet the month of June and the glorious summer months that stretch out ahead. Maybe for you, the escape is as simple and satisfying as crunching on crisp fish and chips at one of Seattle’s classic cafes with dock access (see page 31 for more on that option!), or maybe adventure is calling your name in the form of a fishing trip. Tight Lines columnist Mark Yuasa has you covered there, with his Northwest summer travel guide starting on page 50, which not only includes details on when and where to find the best catches, but also spots to eat, stay, and play nearby while you’re at it. (No boat of your own? No problem: NW Explorations has a wealth of charter vessels at the ready. Just follow the flow chart on page 56 to find the right one for you!) Or, how about a new toy or tender to amp up the fun in the sun? From an electric-powered surfboard to an amphibious tender, the high-octane water toys on page 54 are sure to bring out your inner kid. We’re excited to feature the Blackfin brand of powerboats in our Arrivals section (page 38), newly-returned to the Northwest and fit for family, fishing, and beyond, and also thrilled to introduce you to Thain Electric Boat Company (page 58). A pandemic-era pivot has led to the debut of this Everett-based company’s first electric design, a sleek runabout that would be perfect for ducking in and out of the docks that you’ll explore all season long. One last note: As he mentioned in his previous column, our own Nigel Barron is soon headed off on his own epic journey as he and his team prepare Zvi for the start of the Transpac 2021 race next month (page 74). He’ll be taking us along with updates all summer, so that even from your deck chair, you’ll get to enjoy a taste of the adventure. Whatever your summer escape, I hope you enjoy this season to the fullest, Kate Calamusa Editor Say hi: kate@nwyachting.com 14

[ SUMMER SAILING ]

Downtown Sailing Series, Leukemia Cup Return This Month As the Pacific Northwest emerges from the dark cloud of 2020’s COVID-19 cancellations, Seattle welcomes back two of its early summer highlights this month: The Downtown Sailing Series and the Elliott Bay Leukemia Cup Regatta. The first event of the weekly Sailing Series is set for June 10. Sponsored by Elliott Bay Yacht Sales, the event will feature races and cruises with dozens of boats of every size from Elliott Bay Marina. Afterwards, participants can relax with beer, wine, and hotdogs at the Seattle Yacht Club outstation and win prizes from sponsors. But June 10 is only the beginning. Founded in 2004, the Downtown Sailing Series is held every Thursday during the summer season, featuring popular post-regatta parties with Seattle-area boating enthusiasts. Other series dates this month include June 17, sponsored by Monkey Fist Marine, and June 24, sponsored by CSR Marine. (On August 12, Northwest Yachting will help present the annual Rutten Race, so save the date!)

Another June highlight, the Leukemia Cup Regatta, will be held at the Elliott Bay Marina on Saturday, June 12, to raise funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Those registering will be given a unique fundraising URL with information on how boating crews help a worthy cause. Following the regatta, attendees can enjoy a socially distanced “Red Sky Night” celebration. While participants must be separated on their own respective boats, they can enjoy a floating concert with classic rock from the Kennedy Brothers, a live auction, and a raffle; all proceeds will go to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Since its partnership with the Leukemia Cup Regatta began in 2005, the Downtown Sailing Series has raised more than $1.5 million to help fight the blood-borne disease. At the end of the Sailing Series season, Elliott Bay Marina will hold an awards ceremony that will offer three prizes of one month, two months, and three months of free moorage. The awards will be eligible only for boats that have finished every race, including the Leukemia Cup. Visit downtownsailingseries.com for more details. PHOTO COURTESY OF KARLA CAR

[ ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP ]

Ambitious Green Pledge Set for Northwest Seaports As environmental stewardship becomes a primary concern in the Northwest maritime industry, the three main ports in the region and the Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) made a pledge in April to phase out all seaport-related greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Under the 2050 pledge, the ports in Seattle, Tacoma, and Vancouver, British Columbia, said they plan to meet this target through upgrades to equipment, a change in fuels, and improvement to port infrastructure. The ultimate goal, the ports said, is to support cleaner air for local communities and to help limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C. To meet these goals, the pledge will focus on activities in six sectors of port activity: oceangoing vessels, cargo-handling equipment, trucks, harbor vessels, rail, and port administration facilities. While the Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy was able to reduce diesel particulate matter by 80% and greenhouse gas emissions by 15% relative to 2005 levels, the International Maritime Organization found that worldwide greenhouse gas emissions from shipping increased 10% between 2012 and 2018 and are projected to increase by another 50% by 2050 if no additional actions are taken.

26

On a related note, at the end of March the NWSA announced the results of the annual North Star Awards, naming Seattle’s SSA Marine as the winner of the Environmental Stewardship Award for its efforts to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions. SSA converted traditional light bulbs to LED, saving 1.2 million kilowatt-hours, and added greener “last-mile” commuter connections to its Harbor Island headquarters, cutting 157 tons of annual CO2 emissions. SSA also diverted 26 tons of waste from landfills by instituting a composting program. Another notable NWSA winner was MacMillan-Piper, the largest sea-freight company in the region, which won the Cargo Anchor Award for expanding its Tacoma facility and launching a new logistics division. Both accomplishments increased employment by more than 18% year over year and are expected to boost jobs and revenue by more than 50% over the next five years. For more information on the North Star Awards, and 2050 emissions pledge, visit: nwseaportalliance.com.

[ BOATBUILDER BEAT ]

Silverback Marine Relocates to Port of Tacoma Boatbuilder Silverback Marine, one of the startups chosen in February for Washington state’s Maritime Blue Accelerator Program, has moved its headquarters south on Puget Sound, from Seattle’s SODO neighborhood to the Port of Tacoma. Silverback CEO Ian Gracey said the decision to move was made because Tacoma was a better fit for the company’s workforce. “Tacoma is very supportive of innovative companies like us,” he added. “Both the city and the Port of Tacoma have a proactive, forward-thinking approach, which makes Tacoma’s maritime ecosystem very attractive and sustainable.” Unofficially, there may also be some family ties behind the move. The new manufacturing space is located at Tacoma’s Earley Business Center, a 50-acre maritime industrial park that was once the site of Todd Pacific Shipyards. During World War II, that shipyard launched the Bogue-class aircraft carrier USS Block Island, a ship on which Gracey’s

grandfather served as an officer in 1945. “To be building boats today in these same four walls is really amazing,” Gracey said. “It is exciting to see boatbuilding activity returning to the (Tacoma) Tideflats,” said Dick Marzano, commission president for the Port of Tacoma. “We welcome the new business opportunities and jobs they will bring to the port and Pierce County.” Silverback Marine, which specializes in aluminum landing crafts, skiffs, offshore boats, barges, dredges, and catamarans, was awarded a contract in April to build an all-electric, sewage pump-out vessel for the Port of Lopez Island. The company will be teaming with fellow Blue Accelerator startup Pure Watercraft, which will provide the vessel’s all-electric outboard engines. The finished boat, paid for through a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, will be used in the waters of Lopez Island’s Fisherman Bay. Fish & Ships Dock and dine al fresco this month at these classic local waterfront eateries that excel in a crispy, crunchy summer staple: Alaskan cod fish and chips.

Ivar’s Salmon House It’s finally back! After shuttering the dining areas back in the fall due to Covid, Ivar’s famous Salmon House on Lake Union reopened its doors to fans on May 17th. With outdoor dining now available on the sunny deck and on the barge (pic above), the dining experience here couldn’t be more iconic or inviting: Watch kayakers paddle by under the shadow of the Ship Canal Bridge as you crunch on flaky Alaskan true cod prepared according to the same classic recipe since 1938. Ivar’s has nearly 250 feet of complimentary moorage for all restaurant guests; or, if the pull of the water is too strong, you can always just make a quick dock-stop to pick up a takeout order, too! Fremont/Portage Bay; 206.632.0767; ivars. com/locations/salmon-house. Anthony’s Beach Cafe The popular casual sibling below Anthony’s Homeport, the Beach Cafe in Edmonds offers fantastic fish and chips on their inviting patio, and a tableside sandpit complete with toys for antsy kiddos, too. Watch the

Edmonds-Kingston ferry come and go as you dine on Alaskan cod lightly encrusted with airy Panko breadcrumbs and served with signature zippy beach slaw and fries. Enjoy up to 4 hours of free moorage, which is offered on a first-come, first-served basis at the I, J & L docks, just steps away from your table. Edmonds; 425.771.4400; anthonys.com/restaurant/ anthonys-beach-cafe/. Maggie’s Bluff There’s a lot to love about the fish and chips at Maggie’s Bluff: The tender cod is coated with an airy beer batter featuring Manny’s signature ale. And that housemade artichoke caper tartar that comes alongside for dipping and dunking? Amazing, indeed. With a convivial atmosphere and top-notch views of the city skyline, this waterside favorite always provides a lovely repast on a sunny day. Guests can dock at the adjoining Elliott Bay Marina for up to 3 hours while dining for a small $10 fee. Magnolia; 206.283.8322; maggiesbluff.com. 31

Protect your boat from ‘brglrs’ with Brnkl Your vessel is sure to see plenty of boat slips around Puget Sound and beyond this summer. Be sure you keep her safe during your voyages with this security and monitoring system from Victoria, British Columbia-based Brnkl. The module, which can be secured near the helm, includes sensors to track a range of variables—such as location, temperature, humidity, bilge pump activity, smoke alarms, leak detectors, and ignition switch activation—and sends alerts via your smartphone or other digital device whether you’re at home or half a world away. A camera accessory can also be added to snap photos of any suspicious activity. $895, plus $210 for an annual service plan // brnkl.io.

Ice cream in a few shakes! Nothing is better after a summer’s day on the water than a dish of delicious ice cream. Now, you can make it on board in a snap and a shake with the Softshell Ice Cream Ball from Seattle’s UCO Gear. Just load up this softshell ball of fun with cream, sugar, and fruit in the mixing chamber, plus rock salt on the other side to provide the needed chill. Then simply shake or roll it around to mix the ingredients (a perfect job for young kids with lots of energy!). After 30 minutes of (gentle) activity, pop the lid open to scoop out a sweet, cold treat for boaters of all ages. Available in pint or quart sizes, the ball is made from food-safe, BPA-free materials and includes a “Pure & Simple” recipe booklet. $44.99 for quart-size; $34.99 for pint-size // ucogear.com.

Feel the beat with Garmin Fusion XS marine speakers Summer’s here, so let’s get this party started with some tunes! These Garmin Fusion XS marine 240-watt speakers will pump up the volume at your next boat party. The aluminum dome tweeter provides a smooth upper-frequency response and increased efficiency, while the overhung design reduces distortion and increases power and efficiency. An optional multicolor LED lighting system can help keep the party going after dark. The XS speakers are made with fully sealed crossover components to provide increased protection from the harsh marine environment and include a three-year warranty. $119.99 per pair for 4” diameter, or $199.99 for 7.7” diameter // buy.garmin.com.

No more sandy bottoms! It never fails for every beach visit with the kids: Lots of towels, toys and little behinds covered in sand, which usually winds up on your boat deck or your car’s carpets. With this pop-up beach ground cover from—you guessed it, Sandy Bumz—you can keep the kids together and (relatively) sand-free with the flexible polyester zone of protection. The hexagon-shaped cover, which folds up into a carrying bag, can be set up in seconds and weighs only about 50 ounces. The 8-inch-high lip surrounding the 52-square-foot, water-resistant space helps parents corral babies and toddlers looking to roam. Created in 2015 by a California mother of three children, Sandy Bumz knows exactly what beach-loving parents really need for a day at the shore with kids. $29 // mysandybumz.com.

Protect your laptop, ocean health with inCase sleeve Not only does your laptop need protection out on the open water, so does the water itself. Now you can help address both problems with this stylish inCase sleeve for 13-inch laptops, such as the MacBook. These sleek sleeves are made with Bionic FLX ripstop material, a continuous filament yarn created from plastic waste recovered from marine and coastal environments. Each 100% recycled sleeve is the equivalent of removing about seven plastic bottles from the fragile ocean environment, as stipulated in inCase’s joint agreement with the Waterkeeper Alliance environmental nonprofit organization. The durable, abrasion-resistant sleeves include an external quick-access zippered organization pocket and come in steel gray or ocean green colors. $49.95, also available in a 16-inch sleeve for the same price // incase.com.

Sail and sail again with this 727 bucket bag A Northwest Yachting favorite, this casual bucket bag from 727 has been updated with new styling for 2021. The bag, dubbed “Cruise Boat Atlantic,” is made from 100% recycled sails, the 18-inch-wide carryall bag is accented with bright aqua stripes on each end and includes multiple pockets to help organize your essentials. The bag’s internal lining is made with recycled spinnaker sails, while the outer surface uses natural linen fibers and mainsail cloth, collected and recycled in France, giving it an unmistakably authentic nautical look. Equipped with long, sturdy handles and a lace-sliding closure, the bucket bag can be carried by hand, by arm, or slung over one shoulder. Now available for the summertime price of $157.50 // 727sailbags.us.

The Blackfin 272DC seen here on the water along with the 252DC in the background.

Blackfin 272DC Blackfin makes a triumphant return to the Northwest with new models offered exclusively by Irwin Yacht Sales—including the versatile dual console 272DC fit for fishing, family, and beyond. The beloved Blackfin brand, makers of high-end, yacht-like fishing and leisure boats, has returned to the Pacific Northwest. Matt Maynard, owner of Irwin Yacht Sales, secured the dealership rights for the region after noticing an uptick in demand for second boats trending amongst their clients and in the larger market. “Many of our larger yacht clients were looking for a tow-behind center, dual consoles, or commuter boats that they could take from their home ports while leaving their larger boats at their summertime moorage,” Maynard explains. “Others were looking for day trip boats to explore, go fishing and crabbing, do real watersports, and go farther than what was realistic in an inflatable—and feel safe and comfortable. This is where Blackfin fit in perfectly.” Complementing Irwin Yacht Sales’ existing business and its representation of Outer Reef Yachts, the Blackfin boats are chock-full of features, built to top-quality standards, and are remarkably safe rides. All of these elements add up to better boats, offered at better prices, that Maynard is excited to offer new and experienced boaters alike. Since the relaunch of the brand in 2018, Blackfin boats have quickly earned a reputation for being exceptionally well built. The thoughtfully designed line of center and dual console boats ranges in size from 22- to 33-feet long. Irwin currently offers five center console models, the 222CC, 252CC, 272CC, the all new 302CC and the award-winning 332CC, plus the newly-released 252DC and 272DC dual console models. The dual consoles were introduced in 2020 to offer even more flexibility for families that fish, but also like to cruise or do water sports. Thus, the 272 features a first-ever electronic sliding port side seat that shifts aft to allow for a fold-out third seat, transforming the cockpit into a full party deck. Complete with a wet bar, sink, full head, and charging ports for everyone’s electronics, this dual console is truly the best of both worlds— a smooth ride and, with more room to roam while onboard. The DC272 comes loaded with all the necessary features and amenities for the serious fisherman such as a fiberglass hardtop, gunnel, and transom-mounted rod holders, in-floor fish boxes, as well as the latest in navigation and fish-finding technology. Then, when the day calls for some recreational boating, hit the water with a Fusion Apollo sound system with JL speakers, convertible port lounge seat with storage, and a wet bar with sink and Yeti Tundra cooler.

2022 Sabre 48 Salon Express Arriving at Bellingham Yachts in time for late summer cruising, the popular all-new 48 is a thrilling combination of evolution and revolution for the Sabre Yacht brand. The most popular motoryacht in Sabre Yachts’ 49-year history, the Sabre 48 Salon Express boasts a classic exterior profile coupled by an unexpected level of contemporary performance. The deep planing hull performs with precision even in choppier waters. Powered by the twin Volvo-Penta IPS-700 engines, she cruises at 27 knots and at wide open throttle, she’ll attain more than 32 knots. With the Volvo pod drive system, turns at speed are as exciting as they are in a sports car, but perhaps even more exhilarating is the quiet that one experiences at cruise speeds. At the helm, the joystick 40

docking and dynamic positioning system give the skipper confidence to dock her in the most difficult of circumstances. Her raised cockpit merges nicely with the main salon, allowing for plenty of space for friends and family to gather, and the aft end of the house opens up fully to connect the area. Her main salon offers ample seating surfaces for entertaining or simply relaxing or enjoying the standard entertainment systems. While underway, the raised settee located just behind the Stidd helm chair is a perfect place to observe the ride. When docking, a standard side deck door serves her helmsman and crew well. The sophisticated interiors are finished in gleaming varnished cherry wood, contributing to the warm look and feel, and the Bellingham

model’s striking looks are only further enhanced by a beautiful flag blue hull on the exterior. The sun-filled deck connects effortlessly to the swim platform, both outfitted in Sabre’s classic white colorway, while the galley down is spacious and filled with light, making food preparation a pure pleasure. Unique to the 48 design, her master berth and en suite head have an athwartships orientation, allowing for a spacious, walk-around island queen. The layout is also supplemented by a mechanical space found under the setee and forward of the engine room that can be laid out as a crew quarters with berth and head unit.

GONE FISHIN’ Even after spending most of my life fishing, boating, and enjoying the outdoors around the Pacific Northwest, come June, I spring into summer mode like a kid on a first-time-ever Disneyland vacation. It’s a time when a variety of gear emerges from the garage as I begin to map out the places I intend to fish (and find some fun, too). Knowing the next few months will come and go in the blink of an eye, I’ve gathered up an extensive “to-fish” list of destinations to help make your summer fishing dreams a reality.

BY MARK YUASA

SOUTH-CENTRAL PUGET SOUND King & Pink Salmon The Catch: Summer hatchery-marked king fishing gets underway June 16 through September 30 in the Tacoma-Vashon Island area or until a catch quota of 3,087 is achieved. Millions of pink salmon arrive in late July through early September to boost prospects, then fishing reverts to Chinook, non-retention, if and when the quota targeting pinks and coho is reached. Nibbles & Bites: The best fishing spots are the Clay Banks and Owen Beach off Point Defiance Park; the “flats” outside of Gig Harbor; Point Dalco on Vashon Island; and the slag pile off Tacoma Yacht Club. Since pesky dogfish can be a problem in summer, avoid using bait like herring and switch to metal-style jigs and spoons, plugs, or plastic squids. As ironic as it sounds, pinks are attracted to small pink-colored lures, plastic squids, or jigs. Boat rentals are available at the Point Defiance Park Boathouse, should you be in need of a vessel. Eat, Stay, Play: Over the past decade, the Point Ruston area has evolved into a modern 97-acre mixed use area that is more than worth a visit. The thriving Point Ruston Urban Village (pointruston. com) consists of condominiums, apartments, office space, and a movie theatre with amenities for shoppers and diners. The Grand Plaza on the water’s edge has an amphitheater, children’s playground, and kayak and SUP rentals. An attractive flat, mile-long walkway hugs the shoreline linking Point Defiance Park to Point Ruston and offers a majestic view of Mount Rainier. The new Silver Cloud Hotel (silvercloud.com) is set to open on June 3, 2021. Lastly, head to the Ruston Public Market that features more than 20 tenants and stall vendors. Nearby Point Defiance Park (metroparkstacoma.org/place/point-defiance-park/) has an extensive 5-mile loop drive and trail system; scenic gardens surrounded by old-growth trees; a zoo and aquarium; off-leash dog park; picnic facilities; Fort Nisqually History Museum; boathouse and marina; and Anthony’s Homeport Restaurant (anthonys.com). Of the many eateries at Point Ruston, my top choice is Stack 571

Burger & Whiskey Bar (stack571.com), known for gourmet burgers (like the Banh Mi, Poutine, and spicy 3 Pepper Bomb), salads, sandwiches, and extensive offerings of local and imported beer, wine, and liquor. Much of the fare is made with locally sourced ingredients, including Washington’s Double R Ranch beef. UPPER COLUMBIA RIVER AT CHELAN FALLS King Salmon The Catch: The fishing adrenaline rush hits me in early summer as I begin tracking the Chinook run into the Upper Columbia from Wells Dam to the Chelan Falls-Beebe Bridge area. The 2021 forecast is 77,600, up from the original 38,300 forecasted and higher than the actual return of 65,494 in 2020. It’s definitely time to hitch up the boat trailer and head east. Nibbles & Bites: These kings (aka Chinook) migrate to hatchery net pens located at the outfall from the Chelan powerhouse plant where cold water gushes out of the gorge into the warmer Columbia. Best action occurs at daybreak so being on the water by 4 a.m. is the goal. Boats mainly troll the west side of the river parallel to Chelan Falls Road near Powerhouse Park to Beebe Bridge. Use a medium-weight salmon rod and a level-wind reel to an 8- and 10-ounce sliding cannon ball sinker on a chain swivel (for better rotation) with a ProTroll ProFlash and a leader to a 3.5 spinner or a Brad’s Superbait Mini. Those unfamiliar with the fishery can book a guided trip; two highly regarded guides are Aaron Peterson, owner of Peterson’s Northwest Guide Service (petersonsnorthwest.com), and Wenatchee-based guide Austin Moser, owner of Austin’s Northwest Adventures (austinsnorthwestadventures.com). Eat, Stay, Play: Lake Chelan is a popular destination and sits just 4.2 miles from the Chelan Falls fishing grounds. Numerous campgrounds dot the area, but those looking to stay near Chelan Falls should set up camp at Chelan County PUD’s Beebe Bridge Park (chelanpud.org/parks-and-recreation/our-parks/parks-withcamping/beebe-bridge-park), located mere yards to the fishing holes. Now offering online reservations, the 56-acre campground offers 53

tent and RV sites with electricity and water, day-use facility and picnic shelters, swimming area, a nice two-lane boat launch, short-term boat moorage (campers only; first come, first serve), tennis courts, playground, horseshoe pits and a shoreline trail. In downtown Chelan, the smell of freshly-baked cinnamon rolls wafting out of the family-owned Riverwalk Inn & Café (riverwalkinnlakechelan.com) is sure to entice you inside for breakfast. Overlooking the lake and tucked into the hillside amongst the blueberry plants, The Blueberry Hills Farm & Restaurant (wildaboutblueberries.com) in Manson is open breakfast or lunch. The chicken fried steak or coconut cream waffles are tasty choices, and be sure to get a slice of blueberry pie with vanilla ice cream! Wine production began in the Lake Chelan area in late 1990s, and evolved into one of the state’s most popular destinations with more than 30 vineyards and tasting rooms (details available at lakechelanwinevalley.com); plus, every Thursday now through October 28, visitors can enjoy a stroll through the Chelan Farmers Market (chelanfarm-

ersmarket.org) to pick up some fresh fixings to cook up alongside that morning’s catch. PORT TOWNSEND IN NORTHERN PUGET SOUND King Salmon The Catch: The fishing grounds around Port Townsend are the main intersection where king, coho, and pink salmon decide whether to migrate north or south to natal streams. The summer hatchery-marked king fishery opens July 16 through August 15 and has a catch quota of 4,700, down from 5,600 in 2020, but it’s still a palatable number of kings. The wildcard is knowing how long the quota will last, so going sooner rather than later is recommended. Nibbles & Bites: Midchannel Bank, a huge underwater sandy plateau stretching from Point Wilson to the Marrowstone Island Lighthouse, is where the anglers congregate for salmon. Others like the westside of Whidbey Island from Fort Casey south to Bush Point, Oak Bay, and Mats Mats Bay. Anglers troll with downriggers or use

YUJET SURFER ELECTRIC JETBOARD Create your own waves with the new electric-powered carbon fiber surfboard from YuJet, which harnesses the high-octane fun of a jet ski all in board form. Powered by a rechargeable and replaceable lithium battery and controlled by a wireless variable speed handheld remote, this sweet ride can reach speeds of 24 miles per hour for up to 40 minutes non-stop. Early reviewers have raved about the ease of use, even for beginners, and the board is easy to transport, with removable fins and a weight of just 20 pounds once the battery is removed. ($9,999; yujetusa.com.)

lead-head style jigs like a Point Wilson Dart or mooch a herring bait up and down the water column. Launch or moor your boat at the Port Townsend Boat Haven Marina (portofpt.com/boathaven-marina); Fort Worden State Park (parks.state.wa.us/511/FortWorden); Fort Flagler State Park (parks.state.wa.us/508/Fort-Flagler); or, Fort Casey State Park on Whidbey (parks.state.wa.us/505/ Fort-Casey). Eat, Stay, Play: Enjoy the Port Townsend Historic District (enjoypt.com), lined with quaint shops and restaurants. Worth stopping at are the refurbished Palace Hotel (palacept.com), believed to be haunted, the Port Townsend Marine Science Center (ptmsc.org), and the Victorian-era Manresa Castle Hotel (manresacastle.com), plus the area beachfront offers spectacular views of Admiralty Inlet. Fort Worden State Park (website listed above)— with its hidden gun emplacements, restored late 18th century officers’ quarters and homes, and the Point Wilson Lighthouse— is also a wonderful place to while away a day or two. Port Townsend has scores of places to eat, but my go-to spot is the family-owned Hillbottom Pie (hillbottompie.com) on the corner of Tyler Street. Service is slow paced due to a small work staff, but it’s well worth the wait for made from scratch soup (the clam chowder is delightful) and the pizza, which comes hot from the brick oven with slightly charred edges. Leave room for a slice of homemade marionberry pie and vanilla ice cream, which often sells out, so go early or place your pie order ahead. “BUOY 10” IN ASTORIA/ILWACO AREA King & Coho Salmon The Catch: The Lower Columbia River mouth near Buoy 10 is rated as one of the hottest late-summer salmon fisheries in the Pacific Northwest. This season is no exception to the rule with a robust forecast of more than 1.5-million coho expected (181,000 was forecast in 2020 and an actual return of 363,600), the largest dating back to 2009 and 2015. The season for Buoy 10—the red navigational buoy marking the western boundary of this nearly 20-mile fishing area upstream to the Tongue Point/Rocky Point boundary above the Astoria-Megler Bridge—opens August 1-10 for hatchery-marked Chinook and coho only, and then from August 11 through September 6 for all Chinook and hatchery-marked coho. Nibbles & Bites: If you haven’t already booked moorage, a slip could be hard to find in late summer at the Port of Ilwaco or Port

of Astoria. Anglers can access the lower river at numerous launch ramps on Washington and Oregon sides, but be patient and bank on long waiting times. Prime fishing spots aren’t actually at Buoy 10, but just outside of Ilwaco at the Wing Walls, a row of rotting wooden pilings; the Desdemona Sands area, a long, flat submerged sand bar; the buoy line off the town of Astoria above the Astoria-Megler Bridge; outside the Port of Astoria Marina to Fort Stevens State Park; and off the Hammond area. Also, above the bridge on the Washington side are three underwater channels where migratory salmon stage in cooler, brackish water, and just downstream from there is the Church Hole off Fort Columbia State Park. Gear can consist of a weighted diver or 8- to 10-ounce cannon ball sinker to a KoneZone or Fish-Flash-type flasher tied on a tandem hook leader on a whole or cut-plug herring. Eat, Stay, Play: While fishing is the main summer activity, there are quite a few places to see and eat in Astoria, Ilwaco, Long Beach, and other nearby areas. At Ilwaco, soak in the views within the iconic Cape Disappointment State Park with access to the majestic North Head Lighthouse, plus the informative Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center (parks.state.wa.us/187/Cape-Disappointment) that sits high above the cliffs. Walk back in time at the historic town of Astoria (travelastoria. com), where the salmon cannery industry boomed in the late 1800s. This sweet waterfront town has many breweries, restaurants, small shops; be sure to take a stroll along the Riverwalk or hop a ride on the Riverfront Trolley (old300.org; not running at press time due to Covid restrictions, but check back). Soak up some history at the Columbia River Maritime Museum (crmm.org), where you can explore the Lightship Columbia that functioned as a floating lighthouse to mark the mouth of the river from 1951-1979, and then rent a radio-controlled vessel for the kiddos to take for a spin on the model boat pond. Grab a bite or enjoy some local beers on tap at the Fort George Brewery + Public House (fortgeorgebrewery.com) downtown. The brewery is split into three spaces: the original Public House downstairs, the wood-fired pizzeria upstairs, and the Lovell Taproom across the courtyard in the Lovell Building. The pizzas have a not-too-thick, not-too-thin charred crust, the chop and Caesar salads were delightful, and you can’t beat the dessert: A warm chocolate chip cookie baked in a small skillet that comes topped with vanilla ice cream.

SEALEGS AMPHIBIOUS TENDERS Forget hunting down a dock, or worrying about bottoming out at the beach, the amphibious (yes, we said amphibious) boats from New Zealand-based brand SeaLegs easily transition from the water using a patented technology that allows the models to drive on land, and then swiftly transform back into “high-performing powerboats with the simple push of the button. With numerous models available in differing sizes, the company’s newest announced release will be even more friendly as a yacht tender. Expected to roll out in 2022, the 3.8m electric tender is their lightest yet at 450 kg and just 3.5 feet high, making it easy to stow in transom garages, lazarettes, or on deck. (Price varies by model, check sealegs.com or contact the Olympia location at 360.560.4023 for more information.) RUNABOUT REDUX 58

A PANDEMIC-ERA PIVOT LEADS TO THE DESIGN AND DEBUT OF A SUPER SLEEK, ELECTRIC RUNABOUT: INTRODUCING THE NEW 16E FROM EVERETT’S OWN THAIN ELECTRIC BOAT COMPANY. So, what did you accomplish during the Covid-19 lockdowns last year? While most of us were making sourdough bread and exhausting our Netflix accounts, some of us—namely the team at Thain Boatworks (thainelectric.com)—were creating innovative new designs that pushed the limits of electric boat technology. As the coronavirus spread throughout the country, “We had to shut down as a non-essential business,” recalled Rob Smith, CEO of the Everett, Washington-based Thain, which was launched in 2005. “But during the downtime, I began thinking about a design I was working on over the last 20 years.” The basic idea was to build a classic runabout that was fast and maneuverable. However, after pondering some history of early runabouts, Smith began to think about electricity as the main source of power rather than internal combustion. “The early century runabout designs were made to be low-powered with heavy engines,” Smith said. The criticism about electric power centered around the heavy rechargeable batteries required as a source of power. So, why not replace the weight of those bulky engines with a light electric

motor and the necessary weight of its batteries? From that point on, Smith decided that his idea was best suited for an electric boat. “Without the pandemic, we probably wouldn’t have done it,” he added. After Smith officially created the Thain Electric Boat Co., the Thain team, helmed by lead designer Andrew Ashmead and project director Albert VanRooyen, spent most of 2020 working on a prototype called the 16e. The boat’s water-cooled, 45-horsepower motor, with a three-blade bronze propeller, can run for about an hour and a half on a single charge, giving it a range of roughly 60 miles. The 16’ craft with a beam of 4’8”, seats four people and cruises at 13 knots, with a top speed of about 22 knots. Being relatively small in size, there is limited storage capacity under the dashboard, but space remains similar to that of conventional runabout models. Best of all, the low-maintenance electric motor is whisper quiet and produces no exhaust fumes, yet still provides jack-rabbit acceleration and agile performance. “The design serves the weight of the batteries and motor well, where efficiency is a part of the package as opposed to

outright performance,” Smith said. “The modern materials available for the substrate all play a part in its efficiency.” Late last month, the 16e made its debut at the Anacortes Boat & Yacht Spring Sale, turning heads with its clean lines. The final prototype of the 16e is simplicity itself. Even when it’s moored at the dock, the sleek runabout looks like it’s already in motion, with aerodynamic curves created with computer graphic precision. The engineers worked hard to shave as much weight as possible last year on the 16e, using a cored hull to reduce internal framing and increase buoyancy, resulting in a prototype weighing between 600 and 700 pounds. But Smith argued that the boat’s powerplant makes the crucial difference. “It is hard to be lighter than cedar, but the design, along with the strength of the substrates used, make the boat perfect for electric propulsion,” he said. Another key difference between the 16e and other similarly sized runabouts is the cost: An MSRP of just $49,500 makes the 16e one of the

60

most affordable e-boats of its size on the market. “The price point makes it very competitive,” said Steve Dittoe, vice president of sales and marketing for Thain Electric Boat and owner of Everett Yacht Sales (everettyachts.com), the exclusive distributor of the 16e. The model is also expected to be an attractive option for those who want to launch in areas where internal combustion engines are prohibited. Smith described the 16e as a “bread-and-butter boat on the water that is fun, quick, and easy to operate.” The model, he added, will also require no more “fine-tuning” in the design and is ready to be mass-produced. “We are coming to the market with a product priced for the market. You can afford one if you can afford a 16-foot runabout, and it’ll perform comparably.” While the 16e is the first electric boat Smith has produced, he is no stranger to environmental stewardship. Originally from South Africa, Smith is also CEO of EarthWise Ventures (earthwiseventures.com),

which is focused on providing efficient, dependable marine transportation in some of most impoverished regions of the world. Thain has already produced two lightweight, 200-passenger catamaran ferries—the M/V Amani and M/V Bluebird—which operate from Uganda and Tanzania on Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa. Thain and EarthWise are also partnering to build other high-speed ferries for use in the ocean waters off the coasts of Ghana, Togo, and Nigeria. One futuristic model currently in the design stages at Thain is the “LightSpeed-class” trimaran ferry that one day may carry 149 passengers at a sustained speed of 42 knots. In these early stages of the 16e’s production, Thain has not yet settled on the type of batteries that will be used in the mass-produced version, but Smith said they will likely by similar to the Ni-Cd rechargeables

commonly used in Tesla automobiles. “Battery technology is changing so fast that new models will likely have the latest batteries in them,” he said. If all goes well, Dittoe said he expects Thain can ramp up 16e production to about four new 16e boats per month by mid-summer. Other future plans include a 20’ version of the electric boat later this year, as well as options to include teak or mahogany decking materials. While no one wants another pandemic to be the spark for the next generation of low-carbon-footprint boat design, Smith said he’s excited for the potential of the rapidly expanding e-boat market. “The future is electric boats,” he said. “And we’re coming up with a boat that can be afforded by the market. We want to roll out a boat for everybody, right from day one.”

PROTECT WHAT YOU LOVE: Green Boating in the San Juan Islands

Located near the Canadian border in Washington State, the San Juan Islands are an internationally acclaimed boating destination and each summer our waters fill with local and visiting boaters. Stunning landscapes and a rich marine environment provide extensive recreational opportunities such as wildlife viewing, fishing, and crabbing. This amazing group of islands in the Salish Sea, where boaters find wonder and joy, are also critical habitats where fish and wildlife find food and shelter. Sensitive eelgrass habitats are nurseries for juvenile Chinook salmon as well as spawning areas for Pacific herring - small schooling fish that support seabirds, big fish, and marine mammals. Eelgrass damaged by boat anchors can take years to recover. To help salmon and the endangered Southern Resident orcas, avoid herring spawning grounds, anchor out in waters deeper than the eelgrass, or use a mooring buoy when staying outside a marina. Protect marine mammals by keeping your distance, reducing speeds, and turning off fish finders and echo sounders when not in use. Keep marine waters clean by using pump outs, keeping your boat in good working order, and quickly cleaning even small spills. Use the detailed and site specific information provided by Friends of the San Juans in this boater guide sanjuans. org/greenboating to plan ahead and ensure your boating experience in the San Juan Islands is safe and enjoyable for people and nature!

O N WATCH BY PETER SCHRAPPEN

Win-Win Situation Attitude of gratitude: Columnist PETER SCHRAPPEN sums up the latest legislative session in Olympia that culminated in a couple of big wins for the boating industry. As they say, “Perfection is the father and mother of perfection.” Okay, I’m not sure if that’s exactly true, but this maxim worked out well for this month’s column. Why’s that? Well, about 65 minutes before turning in this piece, Governor Jay Inslee signed House Bill 1107 into law, which opens up Washington to out-of-state boaters who want to put their vessel up for charter when the captain and crew are provided. This new law tidies up the previously passed Marine Tourism Bill and then vaults into an entirely new arena: Chartering with a skipper. For those readers clamoring for the details, here are the specifics of this measure led by Superyacht Northwest and, principally, the Port of Port Angeles:

√ √ √ √ √ √

Creates a framework to sell permits for skipper-provided charters for boats from out of state. Increases the vessels eligible for these permits to include boats up to 200 feet. Keeps the current rule that boats can return each year, year after year for 60 days (and those days do not need to be consecutive). Removes the language that boats have to stay away for two years after using days 61-180. Moves the expiration date of this so-called tax preference to 2031 (it previously was January 1, 2026). The law takes effect in late July 2021.

This success, along with the defeat of the doubling of the Watercraft Excise Tax on all registered boats and the buyout of commercial gillnetters in the main stem of the Columbia River all factor into what many experts are saying was the most successful boating legislative session in recent memory and, at least, within the last ten years. While traditional business interests took it on the chin this year, due in large part to the Capital Gains 66

bill passing and the passage of the Low Carbon Fuel Standard (which exempted marine fuel), the state’s $7 billion recreational boating industry and the fleet of 240,000 registered vessels joined together to see all sorts of wins throughout the 105-day legislative session that ended on April 25. So, what’s next? To quote the late Steven Covey (author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People), he asserts that we build stronger relationships, which undergirds any successful outcome, “by proactively doing things that build trust in a relationship, one makes ‘deposits.’” It’s this attitude of gratitude that translates to copious amounts of thank-you notes to legislators who stepped up for our community. Just like the neighboring boater who comes calling, always looking for a favor or for that “cup of sugar” to complete a recipe, the last thing an advocate wants is the perception that they are always there with the handout, looking or asking (or making a withdraw). That all means that I’m going to be busy writing thank-you notes. I want to delicately tee up the next action item: Let’s turn to campaign contributions. Fairly or unfairly, campaigns are run on money and that money comes from individuals and political action committees. To be clear, I have never seen or even witnessed money changing the mind of a lawmaker, but what I have experienced is that campaign money helps interest groups get into the field of ideas and let’s us compete for attention and time with a key legislator. I, for one, will be looking at candidates who were there for us during this past year; now, it’s time for us to be there for them as they dial for dollars. Having worked for elected officials, I know it’s their least favorite part of the job, but the money they raise translates to stature with their colleagues and mail pieces for their campaigns. As the ink dries on House Bill 1107, we’ve seen this Zoom-filled legislative session was historic for a number of reasons, including the success boaters enjoyed—2021 provided the latest and greatest example that boating means business in Olympia. Peter Schrappen is Northwest Marine Trade Association’s Government Affairs Director and the Clean Boating Foundation’s Executive Director. Additionally, he serves on the boards of the Boating Safety Advisory Council, Washington Boating Alliance, and U.S. Superyacht Association.

It might surprise you to learn that Seattleites purchase more sunglasses per capita than any city in the country. With this in mind, and summer in the offing, shop these locally available spectacles that will take you from boat to boardwalk in style. If you scroll through Instagram you will no doubt come across cool girls wearing thick-framed rectangular sunnies in eye-popping colors. Embrace this trend with the “Grace” sunglasses designed by Maiden Noir. Crafted in a dark olive Japanese acetate and made in Japan, the jade colorway is especially striking. ($250; Maiden Noir, ChinatownInternational District; maidennoir.com) The cat-eye is a much-loved design that has been modernized this sailing season with more angular features. Pick up a pair of the “Glass Wing” black and white patterned sunglasses from Luly Yang and you will be the envy of the next yacht party. ($350; Luly Yang Couture, downtown Seattle; lulyyang.com) At some point, we have all yelled “overboard!” as our favorite pair of monocles slip into the sea. The solution might be a pair of locally made, 68

armless classic frames by Seattle’s own Ombraz Sunglasses. Available in three frame styles, plus a variety of colors and lens types, the unique sunnies are designed with a secure, adjustable wraparound cord crafted from marine-grade Japanese nylon and the durable frame is crafted without screws or hinges so that they withstand any potential fall on the dock, too. ($140; Ombraz Sunglasses, available at area retailers like REI; ombraz.com) Or, elevate your basic beaded chain with a brightly-hued version from Edmonds-based Feral that sports a serious ‘90s vibe. Designer Shannon Fisher can even create a custom color combination to suit your wardrobe, or a matching beaded bag, to boot. P ORT OF CALL BY LORI EASTES

The Magic of Mallorca Hidden caves, secluded beaches, and whimsical seaside villages await as you cruise through this Mediterranean gem. PHOTO COURTESY OF STUART PEARCE

Known as the crown jewel of Spain’s Balearic Islands, Mallorca is nothing short of extraordinary. Located just 152 miles from the bustling Spanish city of Barcelona, Mallorca is conveniently located, yet feels very remote. The largest city in Mallorca is none other than the capitol, Palma. With a bustling nightlife, Palma de Mallorca is popular among people of all ages looking for a good time. Also famed for its sunny beaches and turquoise waters, Mallorca’s 1,405 square miles of land across a total of five islands is just waiting to be explored. When it comes to experiencing Mallorca by yacht, there is truly no other way to do it. Gain exclusive access to beaches only accessible by boat. As you first gain sight of the coastline, you’ll spy cliffs outfitted in ancient limestone standing proudly over the water. This natural beauty is complemented by the turquoise ocean water kissing the shoreline. Dotted along the coast, you’ll also notice the quaint villages made of stone. These villages are filled with fantastic shopping boutiques, delicious dining destinations, and fascinating art galleries to peruse. If you decide to venture out into a town, a private tour can be arranged for you and your loved ones. Immerse yourself in rich cultural history as you chat with locals and explore the many hidden wonders of the island. Stop for an afternoon coffee at a charming café or go wine tasting, before heading back to the yacht for the evening. Or, if you prefer to stay onboard, have the wine brought back to you. With a private yacht charter to Mallorca, you can experience the rich cultural history,

authentic cuisine, and stunning ocean views without ever leaving the boat. Sip and spend your evening nestled comfortably on the aft deck. There, you’ll find plush sun chairs waiting for you. At this moment, it is easy to understand why a private yacht vacation is the best way to travel—wait in line for nothing, yet experience everything. The hidden caves, secluded beaches, and whimsical seaside villages all make Mallorca a highly popular destination; whether you’re looking to relax by the water or enjoy an exclusive club, the possibilities are endless. For this quintessential European yachting experience, Worth Avenue can offer you two incredible charter options. The choice is yours. R-SIX Pictured on this month’s cover, this luxury catamaran offers the best of both worlds. A fusion of adventure and affluence, R-SIX was built in 2016 by HH Catamarans, a company renowned for building the highest quality catamarans on the market, so it’s no wonder this HH66 model has received multiple awards. Designed and engineered by Morelli & Melvin, every inch of this yacht has been meticulously crafted. Accommodating six guests in three staterooms, R-SIX offers a thrilling, low-maintenance catamaran experience with amenities typically seen on a luxury yacht.

Eminence Grace the Spanish waters in opulence aboard the charter yacht Eminence. Imagine cruising through the Mediterranean Sea aboard a 257-foot mega yacht with room for 12 guests in eight beautifully appointed staterooms. Revel in the beauty of the stunning coastline as you relax on one of the five decks onboard, whether you choose to relax on the aft deck’s plush white couches or on the sun deck’s jacuzzi bar as you enjoy a drink (or two). For the thrill-seekers, allow the professional crew of 24 to launch any of her two tenders or a variety of toys. However you choose to spend your time onboard, we guarantee you will not be disappointed. Lori Eastes is thrilled to be on the team at Worth Avenue Yachts because chartering private yacht vacations combines everything she loves: party planning, travel, and boats. With a background in hospitality, Lori is committed to providing an unparalleled experience for her clients. ASK NI G E L—A B OA R D Zvi BY NIGEL BARRON

Practice Makes Perfect It’s almost time for Transpac 2021: Columnist NIGEL BARRON and the crew of Zvi prep this month by logging an all-important 150 miles under sail. Time and tide wait for no one. Every day, the team gets closer to our departure to Los Angeles, where we will stage Zvi, the Seattle-based Reichel/Pugh 55, for the start of Transpac 2021 in July. A big part of the preparation has been sailing the boat as much as possible. Since the boat went back in the water in March, we’ve sailed at least once a week—shaking down the systems and learning the best ways to trim the new sails. Prep for the delivery and race includes more than just the sailing and the systems, though. Over the past few weeks, we’ve checked off some big requirements for the race. First, we needed to have a new endorsed rating. This requires that a third party verifies all of the dimensions of the boat and comes up with an accurate displacement number. Getting the rating involved looking at the float lines of the boat and then doing an incline test. Most boats have a specific station in each corner of the vessel where you can measure from the point down to the water and use that information based on the hull file to extrapolate a displacement. The math is shockingly accurate. We used a single point scale to lift a TP-52, and the scale weight was within 30kg of the numbers generated from the float test. The incline test gave us the relative stability of the boat. Most offshore races set minimum stability requirements. To figure out the stability, we hung just under 200kg from the end of the boom to get the boat to heel between 2 and 3 degrees. This was an important process for us, not only for getting a new valid rating certificate but also to see if the work we put in to make the boat lighter paid off. Another important part of race qualification is a required 150-mile passage completely under sail.

We spent Opening Day weekend getting this part done. Leaving Shilshole at 6 p.m. on Friday, we sailed to just short of Neah Bay before turning around and sailing back to Shilshole. It was a good test not only of the boat and systems, but also of the team scheduled to crew the Transpac. This sailing allowed us to practice maneuvers with just 10 people. We made many sail changes, practiced the new watch system, did some kite peels, made water with the new Spectra watermaker, put in reefs and took them out, and got some of the crew additional helm time. We saw a variety of conditions, from the 30 knots on the nose at Point Wilson on the way out, to the nice 12 knots near Clallam Bay, to the 26 knots on the downwind trip back from Port Angeles to Port Townsend. We were able to sail downwind all the way back to Shilshole, which made the sometimes brutal trip out of the Strait of Juan de Fuca worthwhile. As you would expect after a weekend sailing 230 miles, we added a few items to the list. There were a few new leaks, and we found out what worked and what didn’t with our food and cooking plans. We also found some general crew ergonomic issues to work out in the cabin. For sailing hard in 30 knots, the boat performed well: Nothing broke. Nigel Barron was born in England and developed his sea legs at an early age. He is currently the project manager at CSR Marine in Seattle, where he has worked for 15 years, first as a rigger, then an installer, and now in his current role. This summer, he is taking part in the Transpac 2021 race captaining Zvi, a Reichel/Pugh design and McConaghy-built custom race boat from Seattle.
