S

pring time is a great time to dejunk, not declutter but dejunk, there is a difference. It is estimated that about 50 per cent of what we now own is basically clutter – stuff we don’t really need or use. How many pairs of shoes do you own that you no longer wear? How many unwanted gifts are littering your home now that Christmas is over? Dejunking is based on the premise that the more we own, the more weighed down we become.

It’s lovely to have enough, and a pleasure to own some items that may not be strictly necessary but bring us enormous pleasure but, everything else requires time, effort and money. Most of our time is spent working to earn more money in order to buy more stuff or to maintain what we have already – all that furniture to clean and polish; expensive cars that cost a fortune to maintain; houses which are a neverending round of decorating, repairing and replacing. Instead of being an oasis in which to escape the stresses of modern life, our homes have become overcrowded and high maintenance, leaving us exhausted, anxious and time-famished. We’ve become hostages to our stuff. Getting rid of all this excess clutter doesn’t just tidy up your living environment – it can have a surprising and transformative effect on all aspects of your 4 OCIO magazine

life. Living a cleaner, simpler existence can become an almost spiritual transformation, with remarkable results.

On one level it involves a gradual purging of all the stuff you don’t need that is clogging up your house and your life and on another level, it’s nothing short of a personal liberation, with the power to transform your self-image, the way you think, your basic values and your attitude to your relationships.

As the physical junk gets cleared out, other kinds of junk inevitably follow.

Whether you like it or not, we are all judged by our stuff. If your car is overflowing with old crisp packets or you can’t find a pen in your clutter-filled bag, people can mentally label you ‘disorganised’ or even ‘incompetent’.

A messy house means you may be judged as inhospitable or lazy. Clearing out clutter makes life easier and makes people treat you better. We think that stuff can save us and too many of us have bought into the

myth that acquiring things can bring us love, success or happiness but of course it doesn’t.

So where to start. Well the first thing is to do an audit and consider everything you own and only keep things that are useful or that have positive associations. Those too-small clothes that remind you that you were once two sizes smaller? Let them go. Letters or other memories of an old love affair that went sour? Keeping them just keeps us in the past and drags us down. Clearing them out allows us to start again. Start small, take it one manageable step at a time. Begin with one drawer or cupboard, and throw away anything you don’t use or need. See how good it feels. Enjoy the instant results. This will help motivate you to keep on dejunking.

Once you’ve dejunked keep on top of it and rethink your attitude to buying. Plan your purchases carefully, on the basis that you really need them or want them – not because you should have them or you think they’ll cheer you up. If people want to know what to give you as a gift, ask for tickets to a show, bath treats, or food or wine – things that can be used rather than just stored. There is a whole new way of life waiting for you and it starts right now.

a primavera es un gran momento para deshacerte de tus trastos, no ordenarlos, deshacerte de ellos, hay una diferencia.

Se estima que cerca del 50% de lo que poseemos es básicamente cacharros, cosas que no necesitamos realmente o no usamos. ¿Cuantos pares de zapatos tienes que ya no te pones? ¿Cuantos regalos indeseados se amontonan en tu casa ahora que han pasado las navidades?

Descachatarrar se basa en la premisa de que cuanto más tenemos mas agobiados estamos. Es estupendo tener suficiente y el placer de tener algunas cosas que no son estrictamente necesarias pero que nos dan placer, pero todo lo demás requiere tiempo, esfuerzo y dinero.

La mayor parte del tiempo lo pasamos trabajando para hacer más dinero para comprar nuevas cosas o mantener las que ya tenemos. Todos esos muebles que limpiar y dar brillo; coches carísimos que cuesta una fortuna mantener; casas que son espirales de decoración, reparación, y sustitución. En vez de ser un oasis en el que escapar del estrés de la vida moderna, nuestros hogares están abarrotados y exigen un gran mantenimiento, dejándonos exhaustos, ansiosos y sin tiempo. Nos hemos convertido en prisioneros de

nuestras cosas. Deshaciéndonos de todo este exceso de trastos no solamente ordenas tu espacio vital, puede tener un sorprendente y transformador efecto en todos los aspectos de tu vida. Vivir una existencia mas limpia y mas simple puede volverse casi una transformación espiritual con notables resultados.

Por un lado esto implica una purga gradual de las cosas que no necesitas y que están atestando tu casa y tu vida y por otro lado es un tipo de liberación personal, con el poder y transformar tu imagen, la manera en que piensas tus valores básicos y tu actitud en tus relaciones personales. Gente que ya lo ha hecho habla de este experiencia como el momento decisivo que les ha permitido reconsiderar sus vidas, sentirse mas ligeros y mas liberados de que se han sentido por años.

Tanto si te gusta como si no, todos somos juzgados por nuestras cosas.

Si tu coche esta lleno de paquetes de patatas fritas o no puedes encontrar un boli en tu bolso lleno de trastos la gente puede etiquetarte mentalmente como desorganizado o incluso incompetente.

Una casa desordenada puede hacer que seas juzgado como no hospitalario o perezoso. Limpiar tus trastos hace tu vida mas fácil y hace que la gente te trata mejor.

Pensamos que las cosas pueden salvarnos y demasiados creemos el mito de que adquiriendo cosas conseguiremos amor, éxito o felicidad, pero por supuesto esto no pasa.

Entonces ¿como empezar? La primera cosa que vamos a hacer es pensar en todo que tienes y quedarte solo con las cosas que son útiles o que son positivas para ti. Esa ropa demasiada pequeña que te recuerda que una vez eras 2 tallas mas delgado?

Déjalas ir. Cartas u otro recuerdo de antiguos amores amargos? Quedándotelas te quedas en el pasado hundiéndote.

Limpiando todo esto nos permite empezar de nuevo. Empieza despacio, dar un pequeño paso a cada momento, empieza con un cajón o armario y tira todo que no uses o no necesitas.

Verás que bien te sientes. Disfruta los resultados inmediatos. Esto te motivara para seguir tirando trastos. Una vez que lo has hecho repiensa a tu actitud al comprar.

Planear tus compras cuidadosamente, partiendo de la base de lo que necesitas o lo que realmente quieres, no solo porque deberías tenerlo o porque crees que te animara tenerlo. Si alguien quiere saber que a regalarte, pide entradas para un espectáculo, tratamientos corporales, comida o vino, cosas que pueden ser usadas en lugar de almacenadas. Hay todo una nueva forma de vivir esperando por ti y empieza ahora mismo. Coge tu vida por la riendas..... tira tus trastos. n OCIO magazine

he barter system is an old system making a strong comeback. It may seem like a blast from the past, but an old system of getting what you want without having to pay cash is back and is being welcomed with open arms. Since the beginning of time bartering has created a way of trading between individuals that need each others goods or services. A good stonecutter for example might have made a few extra tools and simply traded them for furs or other things he wanted or needed. It’s so simple that the cavemen did it.

Bartering today is a little more advanced than the caveman era. Bartering now is done through a network or organisation that brings people together and manages the transactions between them, but with a difference.

One such company is Club Barter which allows you to trade your products or services, at full market value, to another member in exchange for credit to spend with any other member within the club. It is just like creating a new currency. It is simply the old fashioned way of getting what you want in exchange for what you have.

The stories involve us in both sides of the legend, that of the winners and the losers, and set it within a much broader context. The action is fierce and fast but through the wealth of characters, from every corner of the known Roman world, we get a real feel for the time and place. Spartacus himself is not just a hero, though. Here he is also a friend, husband and enemy.

I can’t wait for the second book, to see how Spartacus and the people around him deal with what they have to face.

Top designers such as Michael Kors, Vera Wang and Diesel showed yellow and gold as the bold colours of their collections at the Olympus Fashion Week in New York and the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in L.A. Where is all this yellow inspiration coming from? It is related to the nautical themed looks that have been the toast of the fashion world lately. Designers definitely took a cue from the bright yellow rain slickers, hats, and galoshes often worn by fishermen.

Celebrities such as Ashlee Simpson, Paris Hilton, and Kerry Washington have already been seen wearing this “walking on sunshine” trend. Jennifer Lopez was photographed recently by the gossip press leaving a trendy hair salon wearing a lemon yellow frock, oversized sunglasses and yellow and gold bangle bracelets, confirming the fashionable look for the season ahead.

W

hen we feel discomfort or pain, sometimes we go to practitioners who tell us what we need. In that situation someone decides for us and we assume the consequences, which can sometimes be uncomfortable and even dangerous.

In many cases the advice given or the medication used helps to take away the pain. Possibly, this is a painful sign from the body telling us that we need a change in our lifestyle. This can turn up in different ways: is there anyone that can know better than ourselves what is happening or what we need?

To be aware of our needs, we need to be in tume with our body. This way, we care in an active and a preventive way. We can take a moment during the day to close our eyes, breathe, and just be. It could be five minutes or ten, or even an hour. We can do something we like and it is good for us.

Anyone can do it.

The challenge is to turn the attention to 20 OCIO magazine

ourselves and remove it from the “body”.

Adequate food, enough fluids, exercise and rest. Time to be with ourselves is also a healthy habit, and it allows us to maintain our well being and understand what changes in us.

The aim of the Craniosacral Therapy is to accompany the person in the process of contacting with their health and their resources. Good health keeps us alive and resources allow us to face life.

In a session of Craniosacral Therapy I use my hands to make contact with the person and my presence to accompany it.

Hold attention on the expression of bone, fluids, and tissues. These movements are clearly palpable and provide information.

I remain attentive and make suggestions that may or may not be accepted by the body of the person and offer space for changes that may occur.

This time to be heard gives the person and the body the opportunity to express themselves in multiple ways. Some

discomforts and pains can appear or disappear, but none of this is permanent.

Then we put our attention on what works: HEALTH For some people this can be very relaxing and comforting as they are not subject to invasive or confusing procedures. We only listen through gentle touch. There may be a feeling of peace, pleasant steadiness and silent pause.

Craniosacral therapy is gentle and safe because it does not apply any external force or manipulation, and supports the body’s own intelligence. It is therefore appropriate for people of all ages, from the elderly to children and infants; to accompany pregnancy and postpartum, after surgery, accident, dental work or conditions of fragility.

Chronic conditions respond well to therapy, especially if they are related to stress, because treatment can be extremely relaxing.

The effects are usually very deep and may help in the development of vital processes.

If you can, walk this path towards yourself, towards this center being always available and you will learn how to get back to yourself at any time. Learn how to reach this “fountain” and drink from it.

The healing comes from you, not from something that someone can give you.

uando sentimos molestias o dolores a veces acudimos a personas supuestamente cualificadas para indicarnos lo que necesitamos.En esa situación se decide por nosotros y asumimos las consecuencias...a veces incómodas y hasta peligrosas.

En muchas ocasiones el consejo o medicación indicados sirven para aplacar ese dolor. Posiblemente esta señal que se presenta de forma dolorosa quiere indicarnos que es necesario un cambio en nuestra vida. Puede presentarse repetidamente y bajo diferentes formas. ¿Hay alguien que pueda saber mejor que nosotros lo que necesitamos o lo que nos sucede?

Para estar al tanto de nuestras necesidades hace falta mantener un contacto íntimo con nosotros mismos. De esta manera nos cuidamos activa y preventivamente.

Podemos tomarnos un momento durante el día para cerrar los ojos, respirar, y sólo estar. Pueden ser cinco minutos o diez o una hora. Podemos hacer algo que nos guste y nos hace bien. Cada uno puede encontrar qué y cómo hacerlo.

El desafío es volver la atención hacia nosotros mismos, quitarla del “afuera”.

Alimentación adecuada y líquido suficiente, ejercicio y descanso...ese momento para estar con nosotros mismos también es un hábito saludable. Nos permite mantener actualizado nuestro bienestar y comprender lo que surge y cambia en nosotros.

El objetivo de la Terapia Craneosacral es acompañar a la persona en este proceso

de contactar con su salud, con sus recursos. Esa salud que nos mantiene vivos. Esos recursos que nos permiten afrontar la vida.

En una sesiòn de Terapia Craneosacral utilizo mis manos para hacer contacto con la persona y mi presencia para acompañarla. Sostengo la atención en la expresión de los huesos, los fluídos, los tejidos. Estos movimientos son claramente palpables y ofrecen información.

Permanezco atenta y hago sugerencias sutiles que pueden o no ser aceptadas por el organismo de la persona. Ofrezco espacio para los cambios que pudieran ocurrir.

Este tiempo para ser escuchada, le dá a la persona y a su organismo, la oportunidad de expresarse de múltiples formas.

Pueden aparecer o desaparecer algunas molestias, nada de esto es permanente.

Entonces ponemos nuestra atención en lo que funciona: LA SALUD Para algunas personas esto puede resultar muy relajante y reconfortante ya que no son objeto de maniobras invasivas o desconcertantes. Sólo se las escucha a través del tacto amable. Puede producirse una sensación de paz, de quietud agradable, de pausa silenciosa...

La terapia craneosacral es suave y segura ya que no aplica ninguna fuerza externa ni manipulación y apoya la inteligencia propia del cuerpo. Por ello es apropiada para personas de todas las edades, desde mayores hasta niños y bebés; para acompañar el embarazo y posparto, después de una operación, un accidente,

una intervención dental o en condiciones de fragilidad.

Las dolencias crónicas responden bien a la terapia, especialmente si están relacionadas con estrés, pues el tratamiento puede ser extremadamente relajante.

Los efectos suelen ser muy profundos y es posible que ayuden en el desarrollo de procesos vitales.

T

here has never been a better time to take up photography.

The digital revolution has made cameras more sophisticated, easier to use, smaller and, ultimately, more affordable. Add to the mix an increasingly wide choice of image software, which allows you to do anything from edit your photos to exhibit them professionally online, and it’s no wonder that photography is booming. But while some of us may think we have visual sensibilities all too often our efforts end up having the usual embarrassing flaws – red eyes, blurred backgrounds and feet that end up mysteriously missing from the subject’s body. To help you in your quest for the perfect photograph, we’ve put together some tips and guides on what to do, when and how.

1. Avoid placing subjects centre-frame – they should be looking or moving into space within it. Subjects placed on a ‘cardinal point’ (where the image is split into thirds) have more visual interest.

2. Stand on a chair or crouch down low, 24 OCIO magazine

anything to alter the way you look at the subject. Change the height you shoot from and you’ll instantly improve the image.

3. Red-eye effect occurs when the flash reflects off the retina in the back of the eye. If you can, move the position of the flash: with built-in flashes this is difficult, but many cameras have red-eye reduction, which precedes the flash with short, lowpower flashes to contract the pupils, allowing less light in. If that fails, try shining a light at your subject to force the pupils to contract.

4. If the subject’s eyes are not in focus, it is harder to form a connection, so we’re less likely to appreciate the image. So, when taking pictures of people or animals, always make sure you focus on the eyes to make them as sharp as possible.

5. Most built-in flashes are only suitable for subjects up to three or four metres away. If this is not the case, turn off the flash and record only the ambient light for a better picture.

6. Blurring often happens in night shots.

For good exposure, enough light must reach the digital sensor. Increase the ISO number if possible (this helps the camera in low-light conditions). And keep the camera steady – use a tripod or rest it on a table.

7. The contrast between ground and sky is too great for the camera to record.

If you include lots of sky in your image, the camera will expose for this, making the ground too dark. If lots of ground is in your image, the reverse happens. If you can, try exposure lock, which helps balance things. 8. Your camera assumes that everything is a mid-tone grey, so when photographing snow for example, increase the exposure to brighten the snow and make it look white.

9. Ensure horizons are straight in the viewfinder before taking the picture.

10. Some people rely on automatic functions which is ok, but don’t let the camera totally control the image-making!

And that is it. Simple really, now off you go n and enjoy your photography.

unca ha habido un momento mejor para dedicarse a la fotografía. La revolución digital ha hecho cámaras más sofisticadas, más fáciles de utilizar, más pequeñas y, últimamente, más económicas. Añada a la combinación una gama cada vez más extensa de software de imagen para elegir, que le permita hacer algo de edición con sus fotos para exhibirlas profesionalmente online, y no es de extrañar que esa fotografía sea un bombazo. Pero mientras algunos de nosotros podemos pensar que tenemos sensibilidad visual, con demasiada frecuencia nuestros esfuerzos acaban por tener los vergonzosos defectos habituales -ojos rojos, fondos borrosos y pies que misteriosamente desaparecen del cuerpo del sujeto. Para ayudarle en su búsqueda de la fotografía perfecta, hemos recogido algunas pautas y guías de qué hacer, cuándo y cómo.

1. Evite colocar al sujeto en el centro del marco, ellos deben estar mirando o

moviéndose en el espacio interior. Los sujetos colocados en un “punto cardinal” (donde la imagen se parte en tres) tienen mayor interés visual.

2. De pié en una silla o agachado, algo que cambie la forma en que mira al sujeto.

Cambie la altura desde la que dispara y mejorará instantáneamente la imagen.

3. El efecto de ojos rojos se produce cuando el flash se refleja en la retina del fondo del ojo. Si puede, cambie la posición del flash: con flashes incorporados esto es difícil, pero muchas cámaras tienen la reducción de ojos rojos, que preceden el flash con destellos cortos y de baja potencia para contraer las pupilas, permitiendo que entre menos luz. Si eso falla, intente deslumbrar con una luz al sujeto para forzar la contracción de las pupilas.

4. Si los ojos del sujeto no están enfocados, es más difícil formar una conexión, así que es más difícil apreciar la imagen. De modo que, cuando haga fotografías de personas o animales,

siempre asegúrese de centrarse en los ojos para que salgan tan definidos como sea posible.

5. La mayoría de los flashes incorporados son sólo útiles para sujetos hasta tres o cuatro metros. Si este no es el caso, apáguelo y registre sólo la luz de ambiente para una imagen mejor.

7. Aquí, el contraste entre el suelo y el cielo es demasiado grande para que la cámara lo pueda registrar. Si usted incluye mucho cielo en su imagen, la cámara ajustará la exposición para ello, haciendo el suelo demasiado oscuro.

Si saca mucho suelo, pasará al revés.

Si usted puede, trate de bloquear la exposición, lo que ayuda a equilibrar las cosas.

8. Su cámara asume que todo es un medio-tono gris, así que al fotografiar la nieve (por ejemplo), aumenta la exposición para aclarar la nieve y hacerla parecer blanca.

9. Asegúrese que los horizontes estén rectos en el visor antes de tomar la imagen.

10. Algunas personas dependen de funciones automáticas. ¡No permita que la cámara haga la foto!

he trouble with life today is that we are all too busy trying to fix our own little part of the world economic crises that we forget about enjoying ourselves, especially as a family. Sure we may all try and eat together at the very least in an effort to spend a small part of the day together but what about real quality fun time together, as a family?

Well, allow me to tell you about a recent Sunday my family and I spent together for our youngest sons birthday (13 years old).

We had heard good things about a place inland called El Septimo Cielo (it means Seventh Heaven). It’s predominatly a rural bed and breakfast but with a very big difference. For many years proprietors Els and Frank, along with their daughter Mayte have been offering discerning guests a whole range of activities to run alongside the bed and breakfast business, one of which is quad bike adverture tours.

Now Frank is very quick to point out that this is not a jumping, climbing, speeding and altogether dangerous adventure, but more of a fun day out in the countryside, off road of course but safe. So safe in fact that the route we took allowed for our two sons to spend at least 50% of the time in control of the quads with us parents sat behind them in the passenger seats of the two seater 32 OCIO magazine

quads. I am not saying the route that Frank took us on was not without it’s excitement, far from it but at no time did we feel unsafe or out of our comfort zone.

The quad bikes we were travelling on were fantastic machines, not some cheap Chinese models brought in just to hire out and make a quick buck or two. Frank is passionate about the quads and insists on keeping only the best machines money can buy. His range of bikes means he can choose the right bike for the right person, depending on age, size, build etc, ensuring that you the rider, enjoy the best experience possible.

Our route took us through some of the most spectcular inland scenery and with nothing to rush back for (apart from lunch), we were riding for three hours, including several short stops for photos.

When we did arrive back a welcome drink was waiting for us in the ‘Jungle Marquee’ and lunch was being served.

The ‘Jungle Marquee’ is a restaurant and bar with a difference. You must reserve a table in advance as walk in bookings are not available. More often than not you will have the cosy dining area all to yourselves, providing your party consists of a minimum of 4 persons, and your menu can be ordered in advance to your specific requirements.

We had opted for the house special gourmet lunch which is three courses. Soup to start and to follow you have a selection of fresh meats and vegetables, to cook yourself on the hot plates in the centre of the table.

Dessert was a fabulous chocolate and fruit fondue, with the finest Belgian chocolate.

Again, the style of dining is fun, relaxed and the whole family is involved in the fun aspect of cooking and dining...and all at a fantastic price. Our gourmet meal for four with drinks and coffees came to only 76.00 euros fantastic value for money!

The boys even finished off their afternoon playing 18 holes of crazy golf set in the gardens of El Septimo Cielo. Seventh Heaven...absolutley! n

l problema de hoy en día es que estamos tan ocupados tratando de arreglar la parte que nos toca de las crisis económicas mundiales que nos olvidamos de nuestra propia diversión, especialmente con la familia. Claro que tratamos de comer todos juntos para por lo menos pasar una pequeña parte del dia juntos, pero ¿que pasa con los momentos de diversión juntos como una familia?.

Bueno, dejen que les cuente acerca de

un domingo reciente que mi familia y yo pasamos juntos por el cumpleaños del más pequeño de nuestros hijos (13 años).

Habíamos oído hablar muy bien de un lugar en el interior llamado El Septimo Cielo. Principalmente es un hostal rural de alojamiento y desayuno, pero con una gran diferencia. Durante muchos años sus propietarios Els y Frank, junto con su hija Mayte, llevan ofreciendo a sus distinguidos clientes toda una amplia gama de actividades paralela a su negocio de alojamiento y desayuno, entre ellas los tours de aventura en quads.

Frank nos señala rápidamente que ésta no es una aventura peligrosa de saltos, escaladas ni carreras, sino más bien un día de diversión en el campo, fuera de la circulación por supuesto, pero segura. Tan segura que de hecho la ruta que tomamos permitió a nuestros dos hijos pasar al menos un 50% del tiempo controlando los quads con nosotros, sus padres, sentados detrás de ellos en los asientos del pasajero.

No quiero decir que la ruta por la que nos llevó Frank no tuviera emociones fuertes, ni mucho menos, pero en ningún momento nos sentimos inseguros o fuera de nuestra zona de confort.

Los quads en los que viajabamos eran unas máquinas fantásticas, no uno de esos modelos baratos chinos traídos justo

para alquilar y hacer dinero rápido. Frank es un apasionado de los quads, e insiste en quedarse sólo con las mejores máquinas que el dinero puede comprar. Su gama de motos significa poder escoger la moto adecuada para la persona adecuada, dependiendo de la edad, tamaño, potencia, etc, garantizando que usted, el piloto, disfruta de la mejor experiencia posible.

Nuestro recorrido nos llevó a través de algunos de los paisajes interiores más espectaculares y sin ninguna prisa por regresar (aparte de la comida), estuvimos montando durante tres horas, incluyendo varias paradas cortas para tomar fotos.

Cuando regresamos una bebida de bienvenida nos estaba esperando en el “Jungle Marquee” y el almuerzo estaba sirviéndose.

El ‘Jungle Marquee’ es un bar restaurante con una diferencia. Se tiene que reservar mesa con antelación ya que no cogen reservas en el momento. La mayoría de las veces podrán disponer de la acogedora zona de comedor para ustedes solos, siempre que la mesa tenga un mínimo de

PHOTO: Mayté Mahieu 4 comensales y que se pida el menu con antelación de acuerdo a sus peticiones específicas. Optamos por la comida gourmet especial de la casa compuesta por tres platos. Para empezar una sopa seguida de una selección de carnes frescas y vegetales para cocinar uno mismo en los platos calientes del centro de la mesa. El postre consistió en una fabulosa fondue de chocolate y frutas, con el chocolate belga más exquisito.

Una vez más, el modelo para la cena es agradable, relajado y toda la familia se involucra en el divertido concepto de cocinar y cenar... y todo por un fantástico precio. Nuestra comida gourmet para cuatro con bebidas y café nos costó tan sólo 76,00 Euros – ¡relación calidad precio muy buena!

n recent months Coches Claus have given me a variety of cars to test drive and all of them have been high end motors in the luxury bracket of the motoring world. So when I received my notice that this month I would be taking out a Ford Mondeo, I was to be honest, a little unenthusiastic. After all, it wasn’t quite the Porsche Boxter or Jaguar that I had been spoiled with. But never the less, being the professional that I am, I welcomed the challenge...and boy was I surprised!

Like everyone else I am very familiar with Ford motor cars but I have to say this is the first Mondeo I had driven. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves here. I was pleasantly surprised before I even got into the car.

The styling and overall presence the car had was impressive, even just lying in wait in the car park it seemed to give off an air of confidence. And once I did get myself seated in preparation for the drive I was simply astounded at the amount of space I had around me. The interior was stylish and modern and with all the technology you needed right there at your finger tips.

I personally liked the way I had fingertip access to the controls for the music system, cruise control, onboard computer etc and all without needing to remove a hand from the steering wheel.

So, suitably impressed with my ride, I negotiated my way out of the car park, in reverse, past several parked cars (using the rear and front sensors to alert me if I was getting a little too close for comfort) and onto the open road.

Today I was to make my way down to Nerja.

The Mondeo was easy to manoeuvre through the Torre del Mar traffic, the roundabouts, the traffic lights, the cyclists and the Guardia Civil that seem to have taken up residency on the roundabout as you enter and leave the town. Once I found my way onto the motorway and got acquainted with the handling of the car at higher speed, I was somewhat disappointed that I was only going to Nerja and tried desperately to find an excuse to go further on to La Herradura or Salobreña perhaps.

The car cruised at a graceful pace and I found the cruise control facility very useful

It seems that I say this about every car that Coches Claus give me to test drive and I am going to say it again about this one.

This is a fabulous car to drive and own and represents great value for money. I would normally be urging you to visit Claus for a test drive... but I might just try and keep this one for myself! n

n los ultimos meses Coches Claus me han dado una variedad de coches para probarlas y todos han sido coches de alta calidad del mundo de los automoviles. Asi que cuando me dijeron que iba a probar un Ford Mondeo, para ser sincero, no estaba muy entusiasmado del todo. Porque no era como el Porsche Boxter o Jaguar de las que me han encaprichado. Pero siendo el profesional que soy acepete el reto...y me sorprendio bastante!

Como a todos estoy muy familiarizado con los motores en los Ford pero este es el primer Mondeo que he conducido. Estaba sorprendido incluso antes de haberme metido en el coche. El estilo y presencia que tenia el coche era impresionante, emitia un aire de confianza. Y cuando me sente en el coche estaba completamente asombrado con la cantidad de espacio que tenia a mi alrededor. El interior era muy elegante y moderno con todo la tecnologia que requiere a su alcanza. Personalmente me gusto poder tener al alcance de mis dedos al sistema de música, ordenador etc y todo sin tener que quitar las manos del volante.

Impresionado con mi coche, sali del parking, con la marcha atrás, utilizando los sensores traseras y delanteras para avisarme de que si llegaba demasiado cerca a algo.

Tenia que irme hacia Nerja. El Mondeo era muy facil de manejar entre el trafico de Torre del Mar, las rotondas, semaforos, ciclistas y Guardia Civil de las rotondas en las afueras del pueblo. Cuando ya le pillaba el truco en manejar bien al coche me decepcionaba pensar en que solo tenia que dirigirme a Nerja en vez de Herradura o Salobrena por ejemplo.

Parece que digo esto siempre de los coches que pruebo de Coches Claus.

Pero o dire de nuevo, este es un coche fabuloso para conducir y ser dueño de una y también represente mucho valor por su precio. Vayan a Coches Claus para probarla... pero estoy intentando quedarme esta para mi mismo!! n

Andre Gautice tells us all about the Sauvignon Blanc, the white wine that is so popular all over Europe and in fact in most parts of the world

W

ith spring arriving, I thought it fitting to find a wine to celebrate the season. I wanted a wine that would reflect this time of year’s crisp breezes, green lawns, budding flowers, and sunny days (as well as its rainy ones).

By this time, you’ve probably guessed that I don’t share T.S. Eliot’s view that “April is the cruelest month.”

The first wine that came to mind for this feature was Sauvignon Blanc. This dry, crisp wine with its characteristic herbaceous, grassy nose was perfect. Its colours that range from faint chartreuse to pale straw to light brass intimate the season’s palate.

Its flavours of citrus, vanilla, and melon can complement almost any spring menu.

Sauvignon Blanc is grown in many wine areas of the world. Interestingly, its grassy, herbaceous, and crisp characteristics are almost always present regardless of where it is grown. (The name “Sauvignon” is derived from the French “sauvage” meaning “wild.”) In France, the grape is found in the aromatic and fresh Sancerres and Pouilly Fumes of the Loire Valley. Pouilly-Fume is the firmer, drier and more elegant of the two and Sancerre is a little more fruity. It’s also grown in Bordeaux, where it is often 40 OCIO magazine

In Italy, Sauvignon Blanc can be found at its best in the North East’s Alto Adigio, Friuli, and Veneto. These Sauvignons share the grassy and herbaceous characteristics of their French counterparts and are quite quaffable.

Sauvignon Blanc is also popular among California wine makers, who often produce it under the name Fume Blanc. This alias was first used by Mondavi as a marketing tactic. Perhaps they thought it would have more appeal or would be easier to pronounce. Again, the California versions are quite similar to those produced in Europe -- crisp, dry, and herbaceous, except that occasionally a little oak is introduced.

New Zealand is also a major producer of Sauvignon Blanc. Here the wine often tends to have undertones of tropical fruit, especially when made in Marlborough. The best example of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is Cloudy Bay, but it can be a little pricey.

In South America, Chile is also becoming known for its Sauvignon Blanc, especially from the Casablanca Valley. Here, as almost everywhere else, the wine is crisp

and herbaceous, and quite often has a good acidity.

Sauvignon Blanc provides the perfect accompaniment for seafood, poultry and white meats. It also makes an excellent apéritif as well as a nice sipping wine for a lazy spring afternoon. When buying, look for recent vintages. Sauvignon Blanc typically does not improve with age. Because of its acidity, the wine should be served cold between 45° and 50° to be enjoyed at its best. To reach this temperature, give it about two hours in the refrigerator.

When tasting Sauvignon Blanc, look for a pale straw or brass color maybe with some hints of green. The nose should be full, with herbaceous, grassy, gooseberry aromas sometimes accompanied by vanilla, or tropical fruits. On the palate, expect refreshing flavours of citrus and herbs along with good acidity. If well made, the wine should also have a good finish. Even in its most elegant incarnation, Pouilly-Fume, this “wild” wine should not be wimpy.

In terms of food combining, for me, it is perfect with a simple pasta with prawns and fresh tomatoes, served with friends and family on a sun kissed terrace. n

on la llegada de la primavera, pensé que pegaba encontrar un vino para celebrar la estación. Quería un vino que reflejase el espíritu de esta época del año: brisa fresca, brotes verdes, capullos en flor y días soleados (tantos como días lluviosos), Durante esta época, probablemente no estarás de acuerdo con la afirmación de T.S.Elliot que dice “abril es el mes más cruel”.

El primer vino que me vino a la mente para este artículo fue Sauvignon Blanc.

Este vino seco y chispeante, con ese toque herbáceo y ese aroma verdoso era perfecto. Sus colores que abarcan desde los tenues chartreuse a la pálida paja, pasando por el luminoso verdor se funden con la paleta de colores propia de esta estación. Sus sabores a cítricos, vainilla y melón complementan casi cualquier menú primaveral.

Sauvignon Blanc crece en muchas áreas de cultivo alrededor del mundo.

Curiosamente, sus características verdosas, herbáceas y chispeantes están siempres presentes sin importar de dónde proceda. El nombre “Sauvignong” deriva del francés “sauvage” que significa, salvaje. En Francia, la uva se encuentra en la aromática y fresca Sancerres y PouillyFumes del valle del Loira. Pouilly-Fumes es el más firme, seco y elegante de los dos y Sancerre es un poco más afrutado.

También crece en Bordeaux, donde a veces se mezcla con Semillon.

En Italia, el mejor Sauvignon Blanc puede encontrarse en el noreste del Alto Adigio, Friuli y Venecia. Estos Sauvignon comparten las características verdosas y herbáceas de sus homólogos franceses y son igual de aceptables al paladar.

Sauvignon Blanc es también conocido entre los productores californianos, quienes suelen producirlo bajo el nombre de Fume Blanc. Este alias lo usó la primera vez Mondavi, como una táctica de marketing. Quizás pensaron que sería más acertado o más fácil de pronunciar.

De nuevo, las versiones de California son muy similares a aquellos producidos en Europa: chispeante, seco y herbáceo, excepto un toque de roble, introducido ocasionalmente.

Nueva Zelanda es también un gran productor de Sauvignon Blanc. Aqui, el vino a veces tiende a tener ligeros toques de fruta tropical, especialmente cuando se produce en Marlborough. El mejor ejemplo del Sauvignon Blanc neozelandés es el Cloudy Bay, pero puede ser un poco caro. En Sur América, Chile también está empezando a ser conocida por su Sauvignon Blanc, especialmente el del valle de Casablanca. Aqui, como en casi todas partes, el vino es chispeante y herbáceo y casi siempre tiene buena

acidez.

Sauvignon Blanc proporciona el perfecto acompañamiento para el marisco, carnes de corral y carnes blancas. También hace un excelente aperitivo tanto como un agradable vino suave pra una tranquila mañana de primavera. Cuando lo compres, busca añadas recientes, Sauvignon Blanc no mejora con la edad. A causa de su acidez, este vino debe ser servido frío entre 4 y 5 grados para disfrutar lo mejor de él.

Para alcanzar esta temperatura, manténlo en la nevera alrededor de dos horas.

Cuando saborees un Sauvignon Blanc, busca los tonos pálidos de la paja o el rojizo del cobre. La nariz se llenará de aromas herbáceos, de grosella y algunas veces ligeros tintes de vainilla o frutas tropicales.

En la paleta te puedes esperar olores a cítricos y hierbas, acompañados de una buena acidez. Si es de buena calidad, el vino debe tener un buen acabado. Incluso en su representante más elegante, PouillyFume, este vino “salvaje” no puede ser flojo.

En cuanto a combinarlo con la comida, para mi, este vino es perfecto con una simple pasta con gambas y tomates frescos, servida entre amigos y familia en una agradable terraza soleada. n OCIO magazine

here are so many things to do in Madrid it is hard to know where to start, but start we must. So let me begin by saying that in my experience of Madrid the problem is not what to do but how to find it. The city is simply not so user friendly as say, Barcelona. But nevertheless, armed with some tips and advice your visit will be one to remember.

The time of year that you choose to visit Madrid will dictate greatly what kind of experience you will have. In summer Madrid is unbearably hot, in winter it can 44 OCIO magazine

get very cold.Though the cafes, bars and restaurants and Madrid’s many museums are the same all year round (apart from in August, when many businesses shut for the summer), the many festivals that take place in and around Madrid are worth planning your trip around.

Madrid doesn’t display its tourist attractions quite as openly as other cities might do.

Guided tours aren’t just for the timid traveller who can’t branch out on their own - they’re a great way to get to know a new city. Do a tour or two on your first couple of days

and spend the rest of your time exploring by yourself once you have a feel for the basic layout of the city.

The Ventas bullring in Madrid is where the most hardcore of bullfighting fans can be seen every week, watching the very best bullfighters. Of course, bullfighting is not for everyone, but if you’re interested, this is the best place to try it.

Lavapies, Huertas and La Latina These neighbourhoods to the south of Puerta del Sol are Madrid’s most diverse. Featuring an eclectic mix of immigrant communities and trendy Spaniards, a wander around these parts of Madrid is an essential part of your trip.

Retiro is (literally) a breath of fresh air in Madrid. Take a boat out on the lake, catch some rays or go round to the monument behind the lake and join the hippy drumming at the weekend.

T

he continuing growth of the strawberry sector in Huelva, Spain, continues to symbolise one of the greatest successes in international agriculture in recent years. In addition to the huge economic importance of the sector, the province has single handedly made Spain the leader in strawberry production in Europe. With more than 95% of Spanish strawberry production coming from Huelva, this achievement would have been impossible without the dedication of the growers and organisations in Huelva.

How has this small Spanish province managed to give strawberry producers worldwide a run for their money? Without any European Union subsidies, Huelva’s farmers would proudly boast. Yet, despite the lack of EU help, Huelva is the only zone in Spain that has been declared it’s own economic zone. This has allowed them to create a series of agrarian and commercial laws (approved by the European Commission) that all growers must comply.

If you are reading this article as you eat your morning breakfast of fruit and yoghurt, the chances are the strawberries in your bowl are home grown right here in Spain. Andie Anderson tells us more.

The result has been the creation of a sector with strong economic and technological backing, in constant search of innovations and improvements.

With over 1000 strawberry varieties worldwide, nearly ninety-eight percent of the strawberries produced in Huelva come from the Camarosa variety (The Tudla, Big Bear, Cartuno, and Carisma varieties make up the remaining two percent). Farmers claim that Camarosa’s dominance is due to the idylic adaption of the Californian variety to the excellent soil and climatic conditions in Huelva. Camarosa strawberries are characteristically large, bright red in colour, have a good sheen to them, and are known for their early collection. The berry holds well, so it preserves its full red colour despite its long shelf life.

produced in Spain originate from the province of Huelva. * Huelva produces approximately 300,000 tons of strawberries annually * Fifty percent of Europe’s strawberry production comes from Huelva. * There are approximately 93 strawberry growers in Huelva alone, 85 of which are members of Freshuelva, the main organisation assigned to promote Huelva’s strawberries worldwide. * Nearly half of Huelva’s strawberries are exported. La cocina fácil de Juanra Fúster

ensalada de tomates con atún fresco Puedes encontrarlo en: Bluerose Restaurant, Algarrobo Costa.

Ingredientes: l Atun fresco 100gr (sino tuviéramos fresco se podría utilizar ventresca de atún secándola bien) l 5 tomates medianos l cebollino l media cebolla l 20gr de piñones l maíz l Aceite de sésamo l soja l crema de balsámico

Elaboracion:

Una vez que se han lavado los tomates, los cortaremos en dados medianos (o al gusto) y los posicionaremos en el centro de un plato grande; reservaremos.

En una sartén pondremos un poco aceite de sésamo y añadiremos la cebolla cortada en juliana; pocharemos a fuego medio para posteriormente incluírlo al plato junto con los tomates.

Podremos usar esta misma sartén para cocinar el atún, que previamente habremos cortado en dados o tiras, añadiéndole un poquito más de aceite de sésamo; una vez listo, lo emplataremos junto con las cebollas y el tomate, momento en el que también podremos añadir los piñones y el maíz.

Consejos:

En vez de condimentar la ensalada con los ingredientes por separado, se puede confeccionar una vinagreta con el sésamo, la soja y un chorreoncito de crema de balsámico; con un poquito de manzanilla quedará perfecta.

OCIO magazine favourites ‘MemyselfandI’ 5th March – 10th June, 2012 Jointly produced by Museo Picasso Málaga and the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the exhibition that will be coming to Andalusia provides for the first time and through the lenses of 35 photographers, a “collective portrait” of Picasso that has been built up over the 20th century by the history of photography. Museo Picasso Málaga will bring together an exhaustive collection of portraits of Picasso by major photographers such as Man Ray, Brassaï, Irving Penn, Robert Capa, Henri CartierBresson and Richard Avedon, all key names in the history of photography. The portraits on display form what might be described as a “photographic biography”, not so much of the life of the man himself,

as of the iconic creation of the modern artist. The bohemian; the creative artist; the head of the family... all these aspects are portrayed, creating an iconographic mosaic for posterity.

The exhibition was shown in Cologne, Germany, from September, 2011 to 15th January, 2012. After coming to the Museo Picasso Málaga, it will travel on to the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, in Hamburg, where it will run from 2nd August to 28th October, 2012. The photographs that have been gathered together for this exhibition belong to various museums, private collections and foundations created by the relatives and heirs of the photographers whose work it comprises.
