alentine’s gifts ideas for men and women alike have changed immensely over the years but very few people know where the ideas first originated and why gifts were given on this particular day. It is believed that in the third century AD, Roman Emperor Claudius II, in an attempt to bolster his army forbade young men to marry but a holy man by the name of Valentine flouted the ban, performing marriages in secret. Unfortunately, he was executed on February the 14th in AD 270 for his defiance. Thus, every day since then on 14th of February, millions of people across the world celebrate Valentines Day with the giving of a present for their loved one.

European Central Bank may launch more stimulus to counter economic slowdown
E
uropean Central Bank head Mario Draghi has been doing what he can to reassure the financial world by hinting that the ECB could be going to provide more stimulus for the eurozone economy. Turmoil in the markets and concerns over China and other developing nations will mean a review of the Bank’s monetary policy in March, Draghi said: “In this environment, euro area inflation dynamics also
continue to be weaker than expected. It will therefore be necessary to review and possibly reconsider our monetary policy stance at our next meeting in early March.” Speaking after a policy meeting where it was decided to keep the cost of borrowing unchanged, Draghi was downbeat about the prospects for growth in the countries of the eurozone. “As we start the new year, downside risks have increased again amid heightened uncertainty about emerging market economies’ growth prospects, volatility in financial and commodity markets and geopolitical risks,” he said. As well as signalling that the ECB is prepared to further expand its quantitative easing programme, Draghi defended last December’s policy decisions which have been criticised by some as insufficient. At that time they increased the charge on banks for parking money on deposit at the ECB in an effort to get the banks to lend more, and also expanded quantitative easing to buy chiefly government bonds. Draghi said given what was known at the time the measures were enough. He pointed out that since then oil prices have slumped by 40 percent. The ECB’s December projections were based on crude oil prices averaging $52.2 a barrel this year, but Brent crude is currently trading around $27 per barrel. “We are not surrendering in front of these global factors,” Draghi said, noting that lower energy costs should also serve to boost household consumption and investment. However low energy prices also impact other goods and services, pushing core inflation to levels way below what the ECB says is needed for health economic growth. n

Save Money with a Professional Self Monitoring Alarm system! An interview with Bernd Martin of ¡PERFECT Alarm! S. L.

CIO magazine met up with Bernd Martin to talk about the latest technology in self monitoring home security systems. Q: Firstly Bernd, please tell us what a Self Monitoring Systems does? A: Self Monitoring Systems are fully automated security systems that alert you in cases of Intrusions, Break-ins, Smoke and Fire, Flood, Carbon Monoxide and in fact any other pre defined event. The point is, the last thing you need when someone breaks into your home is an operator calling you to verify the alarm. Q: That sounds good but how does it work? A: Well, a main advantage is that picture verification filters out false alarms by prividing images to your smartphone from one or more camera detectors. The detectors are strategically located to easily verify the alarm as false or not. The images can be used for determining alarms from an intruder, fire, water, etc.. The Smartphone application will help to avoid unnecessary emergency callouts and achieve a high priority on real alarms. On the other hand, when you and your designated circle of trusted people receive system alerts, police can be notified which is increasing the chances of apprehension. Since it is a fully automated system, there is no room for human error. Q: And what about the cost factor? A: Because there are no phone operators, 22 OCIO magazine
Self Monitoring Systems don’t have monthly payments making the system very cost efective indeed. Q: So the sytem is really for so much more than just theft and burglary? A: The trouble with traditional smoke, flood and carbon monoxide sensors is that they can only alert you of events when you are in the home. With our self monitoring system you can be notified if anything goes wrong in your home even when you are miles away. The system notifies you BEFORE these events can cause major damage to you, your family or your property. Even if the alarm system is not armed, we can program it to your needs so it will send informative alerts when, for example, the doors or windows are open, the garage door is left open or if there is an electrical shortage for a period of time.

O: Para empezar Bend, explíquenos lo que hace exactamente un sistema de seguridad de auto control BM: Sistemas de auto control son totalmente automáticos que te avisan en caso de un robo, humo, incendio, inundación, monóxido de carbono y de hecho, de cualquier tipo de ocurrencia predefinida. Es que, lo que no quieres que pase cuando alguien entra en tu casa es tener un operador llamándote para verificar la alarma. O: Eso suena bien, pero ¿cómo funciona? BM: Bueno, la principal ventaja es que la verificación de imágenes clasifica alarmas falsas y te manda imágenes a una aplicación en tu Smartphone desde una o más de las cámaras detectoras en tu casa. I guess the first thing to consider when buying lingerie for a women is to buy her something that she will actually wear, and not just in the bedroom. I know I said think sexy but let’s not run before we can walk. Remember, this is her gift, not yours. For example, a lot of women do not like to wear thongs or see through lingerie. sexy, while others will see them as ‘tarty’ and may wonder what kind of woman you want her to be. For a clue, look in her wardrobe at what she already wears. Does she wear tight jeans with a tight t-shirt? If so, she may like a lingerie item that is a little tighter, that shows some skin. If the clothes in her closet are looser and don’t show much skin, she’ll probably want something a little more modest. If you’re not certain, a camisole or slip in silk or satin that flows away from the body may be your best bet. With lingerie, size is an issue. If you buy something that’s too small she may feel
flattered or she may feel fat. If you buy something too big, she’ll absolutely feel fat. If you’re not certain what size she is, write down the sizes of items in her drawer and ask a lingerie saleswoman for help. This is very important and is an issue that you cannot afford to get wrong. There are many colours in lingerie options and you may be uncertain which one to choose for your lady. If you do not know her favourite colour, take a look in her wardrobe and see what colour she favours and what colour her favourite blouse is. ne of the best quotes I ever read was when fashion designer Tom Ford said “throw away your old socks and underwear every six months”. I remember hearing this and thinking to myself, why does it matter how long I keep my underwear if they’re still in good condition? I wash each pair after one use, I keep them folded neatly in a drawer and unless they rip or tear, why can’t I wear them for the next twenty years? Then it hit me. Underwear is a confidence game. There’s a reason women don’t wear underwear bought from discount stores. They shop at stores like Victoria Secret because the underwear makes them feel beautiful and confident – even if no one is going to see it. A good quality, comfortable pair of underwear for men is exactly the same. It feels good and we project confidence when we wear it. You wouldn’t wear a 30 OCIO magazine

bespoke suit with a pair of ripped and torn underwear, and likewise, you shouldn’t wear it with a pair of old underwear either. I began to follow this advice from Tom Ford, and started changing out my underwear like batteries in a smoke detector. Underwear has a tough job and despite how clean you are and how often you shower, there’s no way to prevent your underwear from having to endure what life throws at it. Now, it should be noted that I don’t just rotate through five or seven pairs of underwear. In fact, I probably have closer to forty or fifty pairs at any given time and, I don’t buy cheap. I buy underwear that, like my clothes, fits well, feels great and
looks the part. Now it is rather wasteful to just throw away a quality pair of underwear after just six months, and I have always been an opponent of the throw-away-culture thus focusing on quality products that will last for years. As such, you should be able to wear quality underwear well past the 6 month mark, especially if you have a big rotation. My wife may be the only person who ever sees them next to my doctor during an annual physical, but shouldn’t my wife be treated to something more than ill-fitting cotton underwear that was bought six to a pack? Of course she should. After all, she’s not buying her lingerie at the street market. She’s buying underwear that she looks great in and feels sexy and confident in from stores like Victoria’s Secret and La Senza. And in the end, when I do get to see them, I enjoy them. She deserves the same in return. n

A
s my flight was landing in Bologna, I realized, true to form, that I had not looked into transportation from there to Maranello. Working my way through baggage claim and into the reception area, I felt a glimmer of hope when I saw a few handheld signs with names, sheepishly looking for mine. I should know better after all these years. As I shuffled around the reception area, something black and yellow caught my eye, and I read it aloud: “Ferrari.” A distinguished gentleman in a black suit glanced up and asked, “Mr Richards?” I nodded, relieved, and said it again: “Ferrari.” After a career in racing and cars, I still get a thrill when I see the word and know it’s directed at me. Enzo Ferrari was a powerful, intimidating force in race and exotic cars early in my career, and now I was about to step into this most sacred of automotive holy lands to learn of and experience the latest of his offspring, the F12tdf. Do not call it a Tour de France, the cycling guys have the copyright, but before pedalers pre-empted the phrase, there was an epic automotive competition on circuits and streets, and Ferrari won it seven times. The tdf is a tribute to Ferrari’s success in those historic events, an era when road and race cars were often one and the same with such epic classics as the 250 GT Berlinetta 38 OCIO magazine

and the SWB version. Hallowed names. Auction prices as high as the Stelvio Pass. The tdf is not a new model; it is a whole new concept. It is not a track car but rather, it was constructed in the spirit of a competition car for the street, as in the 1950s. The heart, soul, and throbbing essence of the F12tdf is its 6.3-litre masterpiece of mechanical engineering, the Ferrari V-12. It is the clear No. 1 favourite powerplant I have ever experienced in a factory street machine. The exhaust is a high-pitched wail, accompanied at wider throttle openings by a muscular growl. The sound alone is worth the 330,000 euros price tag. Ferrari says it’s their highest specific output V-12 ever. Zero to 120 mph could be easily confused with 0 to 60 at 7.9 seconds. Think about that for a moment. And a claimed top speed of more than 211mph. Supercar, indeed.
I am a big fan of the long-nose sweepingtail school of automotive architecture, which Ferrari does very well indeed and I find the interior a very pleasing modern take on the classic Ferrari, highlighted by the striking circular vent designs. On the roads around Modena, the tdf proved frighteningly capable. The car feels balanced and responds quickly. The traction control quells wheelspin so well I almost don’t hate it, especially on the street. The overall package is exceptionally well-suited to high performance on the road, as targeted by the Ferrari team. I confess my seduction by the mystery and richness of all the Ferrari name entails and the feel behind the wheel. Intended for collectors with only 799 units going into production, the F12tdf is a masterpiece of modern day engineering and is very worthy of its birthright. n

ientras mi vuelo aterrizaba en Bolonia, me di cuenta, fiel a mi estilo, que no había tenido en cuenta el transporte desde allí a Maranello. Buscando el camino hacia reclamación de equipaje y a la zona de recepción, sentí un atisbo de esperanza cuando vi algunas señales de mano con nombres, tímidamente buscando la mía. Debo saber mejor después de todos estos años. Mientras me arrastraba por la zona de recepción, algo negro y amarillo me llamó la atención, y leí en voz alta: “¿Sr. Richards”?. “Ferrari” Un distinguido caballero con un traje negro levantó la vista y preguntó, asentí, aliviado, y dije: de nuevo: “. Ferrari” Después de una carrera en las carreras de coches, sigo teniendo una emoción cuando veo la palabra y sé que ha dirigido a mí. Enzo Ferrari era un poderoso, fuerza intimidante en la carrera y autos exóticos principio de mi carrera, y ahora estaba a punto de entrar en
ésta, la más sagrada de las tierras santas de automoción para aprender de la experiencia y el último de sus descendientes, la F12tdf. La TDF es un tributo al éxito de Ferrari en esos acontecimientos históricos, una época en que los coches de carretera y raza a menudo eran una y la misma con clásicos épicos como el 250 GT Berlinetta SWB y la versión. Nombres sagrados. Precios de hasta el Paso del Stelvio subasta. La TDF no es un nuevo modelo; es un concepto completamente nuevo. Yo soy un gran fan de la gran escuela de arquitectura de la automoción, que Ferrari lo hace muy bien y encuentro el interior moderno y muy agradable en el clásico de Ferrari, destacado por los diseños de ventilación circulares sorprendentes. En las carreteras alrededor de Módena, la tdf resultó terriblemente capaz. El coche se siente equilibrado y responde rápidamente. El control de tracción sofoca derrapes tan bien que casi no lo odio, especialmente en la calle. El paquete global está excepcionalmente bien adaptado para un alto rendimiento en la carretera, como dirigido por el equipo Ferrari. Confieso mi seducción por el misterio y la riqueza de todo el nombre de Ferrari conlleva y la sensación al volante. Destinado a coleccionistas con sólo 799 unidades de entrar en producción, la F12tdf es una obra maestra de la ingeniería moderna día y es muy digno de su derecho de nacimiento. n OCIO magazine

For this to work and be romantic, be sure to pick a spot that the two of you will find special. Go restaurant hopping: We have all done this sort of thing where tapas is
concerned, but this is a great way to enjoy a meal and have some fun. Don’t have your dinner all at just one place, instead, choose three restaurants that are in close proximity to each other. Then, have one course in each restaurant. It sounds silly I know, but you’ll never know just how much fun you can have when you walk from one cuisine to another in a matter of minutes. A drink or two will make the whole event a lot funnier too! Order food home and watch a movie: This is a tried and tested formula for a romantic evening. A nice romantic comedy with a simple, easy to follow plot will work best so you can chat as well as enjoy the food without spoiling the plot of the movie. hat is it that makes chocolate so irresistible? A large part of chocolate’s allure, of course, lies in the taste - a deliciously rich concoction that satisfies the most intense craving. But several chemical reactions are also at work. For one thing, chocolate stimulates the secretion of endorphins, producing a pleasureable sensation similar to the “runner’s high” a jogger feels after running several miles. Chocolate also contains a neurotransmitter, serotonin, that acts as an anti-depressant. Other substances, such as theobromine and phenylethylamine, have a stimulating effect. for it, it’s unfortunate that chocolate has developed a bad reputation on the health front. Fortunately, scientists are beginning to disprove some common myths about the dangers of eating too much chocolate. While both cocoa and chocolate contain sugar, they also have properties that work against sugar’s tendency to produce the oral bacteria that eventually leads to dental decay. Furthermore, while chocolate may not be the most healthy snack around, it does contain a number of nutrients As for calories, no one is going to claim chocolate is the quintessential diet food. panish-style doughnuts with wickedly thick hot chocolate made with real chocolate perfect for a family Sunday breakfast.
Ingredients: For the churros: 1/2 cup plus 1 1/2 Tablespoons sugar, divided 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 cup water 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 Tablespoons plus 2 quarts vegetable oil, divided 1 cup all-purpose flour For the chocolate sauce: 3 1/2 ounces dark chocolate, chopped 1/2 cup heavy cream
Preparation: To make the churros: Combine 1/2 cup sugar with the cinnamon in a shallow bowl. Set aside. Line a plate with paper towels. In a small saucepan over medium heat, whisk together the water, 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar, salt and 2 64 OCIO magazine
tablespoons vegetable oil. Bring the mixture to a boil then remove it from the heat. Stir in the flour, mixing until it forms a ball. Heat 3 to 4 inches of vegetable oil in a large, heavy-bottomed pot set over medium-high heat until it reaches 375ºF. (There should be a minimum of 3 inches above the oil to prevent it from bubbling over.) Transfer the dough to a cloth pastry bag or heavy-duty plastic bag fitted with a large star tip. Pipe the dough over the pot of oil to a length of about 4 inches, then using scissors or a sharp knife, cut it so it releases into the oil. Pipe two to three churros into the oil at a time, frying them until they’re golden brown and cooked through. Transfer the churros to the paper towel-lined plate to drain for 2 minutes, then roll them in the cinnamonsugar mixture. Repeat the frying and coating process with the remaining dough. Serve the churros with a warm chocolate sauce.

To make the chocolate sauce: Place the chopped chocolate in a small bowl. Warm the heavy cream in small saucepan. (Do not let it boil.) Pour the heavy cream over the chopped chocolate. Let it sit for 1 minute then stir to combine. NOTE: It’s important to use a cloth or heavy-duty plastic pastry bag, as a regular resealable plastic bag is not thick enough and will split open if you try to pipe the churro dough through it. The chocolate sauce will thicken as it cools, so it’s best to make it right before you’re ready to serve it with the churros. A pastry tip isn’t essential, however using the large star-shaped tip will give the churros the textured lines you see in the photos. This recipe can be easily doubled. n

Ingredientes: Media taza más media cuchara sopera de azúcar, separadas Cuchara pequeña de canela molida 1 taza de agua Media cuchara pequeña de sal 2 cucharas soperas y 2 cuartos de aceite vegetal, separados Una taza de harina blanca Para la salsa de chocolate: 3.5 onzas de chocolate negro, picado Media taza de nata montada
Preparación: Para hacer los churros: Mezclamos media taza de azúcar con la canela en un cuenco y lo dejamos reposar. Cubrimos un plato con papel absorbente. En una olla pequeña a fuego mediano batimos el agua, 1.5 cucharas pequeñas de azúcar, sal y 2 cucharas soperas de aceite vegetal.
Cuando hierva lo quitamos del fuego. Introducimos y mezclamos la harina hasta que forme una bola. Calentamos entre 3 y 4 pulgadas de aceite vegetal en una olla grande a fuego mediano hasta que llegue a 375° Fahrenheit. (Dejamos 3 pulgadas entre el aceite y el borde de la olla para que no derrame). Metemos la masa en una manga pastelera y exprimirla (4 pulgadas) dentro de la olla de aceite (haciendo 2 o 3 a la vez). Freímos hasta que estén dorados y cocinados. Colocamos los churros fritos sobre papel absorbente, los dejamos 2 minutos y enrollamos en la mezcla de azúcar y canela. Servimos los churros con la salsa de chocolate caliente. Para la salsa de chocolate: Ponemos el chocolate negro picado en un cuenco. Calentamos la nata en una olla (sin que llegue a hervir) Añadimos la nata al chocolate, lo
