eople often ask me whether it’s comfortable or healthy to sleep in a hammock. Some ask about using a hammock every night at home or on a long term camping trip, while others simply want to know whether you’ll wake up with neck and back pain if you ‘accidentally’ fall asleep. Well guess what? Sleeping in a hammock is actually good for you! While it’s just now beginning to gain recognition in sleep studies it’s something that people around the world have understood and embraced for centuries. So, if millions of people around the world sleep in hammocks comfortably and scientific studies are proving that it’s one of the healthiest ways to sleep, why do I encounter so many people who have had bad experiences? Bad experiences in a hammock usually involve a hammock that is poorly designed or simply that you are sleeping incorrectly in the hammock. You must first of all appreciate that there are variations to the hammock and you must ensure that you have the right one for your needs…then it’s all about technique The key is to shift your entire body so you’re at about a 30 degree angle across the hammock instead of being straight down the centre. If you place your body in the centre, it’s going to follow the rigid shape of the hammock curve precisely. But, by just shifting your body a small amount you’re actually cutting across the curve of the hammock. The hammock responds by flattening out underneath you, gently cradling your body in what just so turns out to be an absolutely ideal sleeping position with zero pressure points. You’re not going to be perfectly flat, but your body doesn’t need to be perfectly flat – your head and feet will be slightly elevated as they should and the material will conform to the natural curve of your spine. Now relax and enjoy. n

espite having been created in the early nineteenth century, denim has endured and has become an essential part of today’s wardrobe for just about everyone and for just about every purpose from workwear to dressed up nights out. By being able to cross the limits imposed by social differences, by gender and by nationality, denim can be considered the single most representative item of clothing from Western Society. The origin of the word jeans can be traced to the 1567 English Oxford Dictionary. According to it, Genes (as it was known back then), was recorded as a resilient, uniform item of clothing, that predominantly served the needs of the sailors in the city port of Geneva. Moreover, grammar experts who have conducted additional studies of the term Genes, have declared that it u

lucosamine is a natural chemical compound found in the body. As a supplement, glucosamine is most often used to try to ease the joint pain caused by arthritis. Glucosamine helps keep the cartilage in joints healthy. But natural glucosamine levels drop as people age. This can lead to gradual deterioration of the joint. There’s evidence to show that glucosamine sulfate supplements help counteract this effect. Glucosamine has also been useful in treating joint problems associated with sports injuries, A big question has always been about how much glucosamine to take? For osteoarthritis, the typical dose of glucosamine used in most studies was 500 milligrams taken three times a day, but medical advice should be taken for each individual case. Interestingly, although glucosamine sulfate supplements are manufactured from the outer shells of shellfish, there aren’t any natural food sources of glucosamine. Side effects from glucosamine are rare 26 OCIO magazine
and mild in most cases but can include upset stomach, heartburn, drowsiness, and headache. On the whole though, glucosamine is considered to be a safe supplement. People with allergies to shellfish should be wary of using glucosamine, since it could cause an allergic reaction and glucosamine is not recommended for children or women during pregnancy. n

est described as a cross between tennis and squash, using a racket that more resembles a beach bat, padel is one of the fastestgrowing sports around the world. Most racket sports are already firmly established – shuttlecocks have been flying in badminton since the 17th century, while squash and modern tennis have been played since the 1800s – yet padel, by comparison, has only been in play for about 40 years. You may be interested to learn that the game originated in Mexico. In 1974 Alfonso de Hohenlohe Enrique Corcuera travelled to Mexico to stay with a friend and during his stay became interested in a new 28 OCIO magazine
sport that his friend had recently created. The sport incorporated a court with two 3m walls facing each other, a net across the middle and wire meshing along the sides. The game was played with wooden paddles and thus became known as Padel Tennis. In his enthusiasm for the new sport, when Alfonso Hohenlole returned to Spain, he perfected some of the details of the court and the rules of game, and then set about constructing the first two courts in Spain in the Marbella Club. He then began to promote the game of Padel amongst his jet-set friends, who immediately become fans. The rapid success that the sport achieved in such
a short time attracted some outstanding figures from tennis such as Manolo Santana, and matches were organised to spread padel across the Costa del Sol, and several clubs began to construct their own courts. In 1975, the Argentine millionaire Julio Menditenguia, a good friend of Alfonso de Hohenlohe, and a regular visitor to Marbella, witnessed the success of padel, and decided to develop the sport in Argentina. In just a few years he had achieved in raising padel to be one of Argentina’s leading sports, with more than 2 million players and 10,000 courts constructed. In subsequent years padel has extended u

odríamos calificarlo como un híbrido entre el tenis y el squash, se juega con una raqueta que se asemeja más a un bate de playa, el pádel es uno de los deportes que más está creciendo por todo el mundo. La mayoría de los deportes con raqueta están ya firmemente establecidos – los gallitos vuelan en el juego de badminton desde el siglo XVII, mientras que se ha jugado al squash y al tenis moderno desde los 1800 – sin embargo, llevamos solamente unos 40 años jugando al pádel. Tal vez le interesa saber que el juego se originó en México. En 1974, Alfonso de Hohenlohe Enrique Corcuera viajó a México para reunirse con un amigo, y
durante su estancia, se interesó en un nuevo deporte que acababa de idear su amigo. El deporte incluía una pista con dos muros de 3 metros, uno enfrente del otro, una red por la mitad y una malla de a lo largo de los costados. ertain drinks are irrevocably associated with certain cities or countries. The Singapore Sling and Manhattan are obvious. Cuba has its Daiquiri, Puerto Rico the Piña Colada. Dublin’s drink is Guinness, Rio has the caipirinha, and for the best Gin and Tonic, you would naturally look towards... Spain? I was more than surprised a couple of months ago when a gin distiller friend of mine told me that Spain makes the best G&T, served in a tumbler or redwine glass and garnished with citrus peel and fresh spices like star anise or grated nutmeg. The “Gintonic” as it is known, has apparently been the off-duty drink of choice of Spanish chefs for a decade now, and their infatuation has gone large 38 OCIO magazine
with many trendy bars and restaurants now offering an entire menu dedicated to gin and tonic. It is not unusual for these establishments to have up to 80 different gins on the shelves, sourced from all around the world. The British may have invented the drink, but the Spanish have elevated it to an art form. THE HISTORY In the beginning, it was all just medicine. Hoping to ward off malaria, British troops in India in the early 1800s took to drinking water mixed with the ground-up, quinine-laden bark of the cinchona tree. To make this intensely bitter concoction more palatable, the men added sugar, then fancied things up with soda water. Before long, they were adding gin. The troops brought their delicious new
cocktail-hour discovery back home to England with them, but the Gin and Tonic didn’t really take off until the 1930s when commercially bottled tonic waters first hit the shelves. CHOOSING THE RIGHT GIN Your favourite gin for a Martini won’t necessarily be your best choice for a G&T. While many of the newer, more botanically nuanced gins really shine when mixed with a splash of dry u

Hace un par de meses atrás me sorprendí enormemente cuando un amigo que se dedica la destilería de ginebra me dijo que en España se preparan los mejores Gin tonic. Se sirven en vaso ancho o en copa de balón y se acompañan con piel de limón o lima y con diferentes especias como anís o nuez moscada, entre otros. El “Gin tonic” tal y como se conoce en España, ha sido al parecer, una bebida poco popular entre los chefs españoles. Sin embargo, ahora muchos bares y restaurantes dedican cartas enteras a esta bebida. Desde luego no es natural que estos
establecimientos cuenten con una variedad de hasta 80 tipos de ginebra procedentes de todo el mundo. Quizá hayan sido los británicos los que inventaran esta bebida, pero sin duda, han sido los españoles los que la han elevado a la categoría de una obra de arte. HISTORIA En un principio, la tónica era sólo un medicamento, elaborado con la esperanza de prevenir la malaria. A principios de 1800, las tropas británicas en la India llevaron agua potable mezclada con quinina. Open sandwiches do not have to be exclusively for breakfast or a lunchtime snack...they make a great meal during the warmer months of the year.
Don’t you just love September. It’s cool enough to turn on the oven, but still warm enough for ice cream! Personally I still find September is more like summer than autumn, especially here is Spain, so my family recipes still favour lighter dishes and snacks to full on heavy meals. One of my all time favourites is this feta cheese, arugula and poached egg open sandwich. I agree that open sandwiches feel more like lunch, put a poached egg on top and they feel like breakfast but, I like to make these as a light dinner. They create a completely balanced meal with carbahydrates, vegetables and protein. They’re also quick to make and look pretty on the plate. Try them, you will be very surprised I am sure. Ingredients: Slices of rye or sourdough bread, 1 packet of arugula, alfalfa sprouts, a can of corn, olive oil, lemon juice, salt & pepper, 1 egg for each sandwich, feta cheese, grated parmesan, dried thyme, 1 chilli (sliced finely), paprika. Method: Toast or grill the bread. Crumble the feta and mix with the parmesan, thyme and a little lemon juice. Dress the arugula and sprouts with oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Poach the eggs. Assemble the sandwiches. First the salad mix, then the cheese mix, then the corn and the egg. Season the egg and sprinkle with paprika and the red chillies. Now serve and enjoy. n

Feta Cheese, Arugula and Poached Egg Open Sandwich que las recetas para mi familia todavía se inclinan hacia platos y tapas más ligeros que las comidas pesadas al cien por cien. Uno de mis favoritos de todos los tiempos es el bocadillo abierto de queso feta, arúgula y huevo escalfado. Claro está que los bocadillos abiertos se parecen más a un almuerzo, pero si colocas un huevo escalfado encima, se parecen más a un desayuno. Pero a mí me gusta hacerlos como una cena ligera. Crean una comida totalmente equilibrada, con hidratos de carbono, verduras y proteína. Además son rápidos de hacer y tienen buena pinta servido en plato. Pruébelos y estoy seguro que le sorprenderán. Ingredientes: Rebanada de pan de centeno o de levadura, 1 sobre de arúgula, brotes de alfalfa, una lata de maíz, aceite de oliva, zumo de limón, sal y pimienta, 1
Bocadillo abierto de queso feta, arúgula y huevo escalfado
huevo para cada bocadillo, queso feta, parmesano rallado, tomillo seco, 1 chile (troceado finamente), pimentón. Método: tostar o pasar por la parilla el pan. Desmigar el queso feta y mezclar con el parmesano, tomillo y un poco de zumo de limón. Aderezar la arúgula y brotes con aceite, zumo de limón, sal y pimienta. Escalfar los huevos. Montar los bocadillos. Primero, la mezcla de ensalada, y a continuación la mezcla de queso, seguido del maíz y el huevo. Sazonar los huevos y salpicar con pimentón y los chiles rojos. Ahora a servir y a disfrutar. n

ver the past couple of issues, we have explored Benajarafe, the delightful stretch of coastline located 14 kilometres from Málaga between Rincon de la Victoria and Torre del Mar, and we have noted in detail how wonderful this coastal resort is both by day and by night. been inhabited since the Palaeolithic era. It became a medieval farmstead after the Moors had settled here and it was they who gave it its current name. Modern day Benajarafe enjoys it’s history but lives very much in the present day, successfully competing at the highest level in the world of tourism. Benajarafe is a very proud perennial owner of the international Blue Flag, an award given to beaches and marinas that meet excellence in the areas of safety, amenities, cleanliness and environmental standards. The strict criteria of the programme are set by the international coordinators of the Blue Flag campaign in Europe, the FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education). Aunque es un pueblo costero moderno, Benajarafe ha sido habitada desde el Paleolítico. Se convirtió en una alquería medieval después de que los moros habían asentado aquí y fueron ellos los que dieron su nombre actual. Actualmente, Benajarafe disfruta su historia, pero vive en el día de hoy, para competir con éxito al más alto nivel en el mundo del turismo. Benajarafe es un orgulloso propietario bastante perenne de la Bandera Azul internacional, un premio que se otorga a las playas y puertos que cumplen con la excelencia en las áreas de seguridad, servicios, limpieza y medio ambiente. Aside from the aforementioned attractions, Benajarafe is also famous for it’s mango’s. A local family grow and process a massive amount of this delicious fruit which is not only exported around the world but they are also dried, sliced, packaged in small retail quantities, and are sold from their Cafe Mango premises. Of course, a small percentage of the mango’s are allocated to the restaurant to be used creatively in some of the dishes on the eclectic menu. If you have not yet sampled the delicious dried mango, do make a visit to cafe mango and try it, it is simply wonderful.
