WICKED! What an awesome Birthday month it has been!

Thanks to everyone who shared, liked and commented on posts to help get this crazy book out into the big wide internet world. Thanks to everyone who wished us a happy birthday too! It is sooo cool to have all you lot backing what we do here to get all the cool-as car show, drag racing and burnout action into this book to bring to you.

It really is fun doing it, but you all know we love this stuff! Well, you should have figured it out by now anyway! Hahaha. There’s been a bit happening in the show scene lately even though the winter months have been pretty wet. I see a lot of club runs have been happening which is awesome. There really is no excuse not to get amongst and get the toys out. We are about to kick straight back into the summer show scene very soon though. The planner is looking busy leading up to the summer months that’s for sure!

The Prowear Chrome Horsepower festival is coming up in August and looks to be a showstopper this year! The awesomely enthusiastic team at Premier Events have even organised for the four top burnouts cars to head over to Australia to battle it out with the Aussies at Summernats in the burnout comp there. Now that’s something that has never happened before in little ole NZ!

Apart from all the big guns lining up for those spots on the burnout

entire weekend at Chrome is full of different events and cruising, so it’s looking to be an awesome fun weekend for sure! Jump onto their Facebook page or website and check it out.

Check out the events coming up at the back of this issue as well and get a few into your planner.

On the BIG NEWS front, Jessica from Blissful photography and myself will be holding a “must get to” show in September in Tauranga. We are still in the planning stage, but definitely get the 16th of September in your diary and come along for a cool-as show. Jessica is hugely known in the car scene for her photography at BayPark Speedway plus the awesome coverage she does of the rallies and other motorsport events. It is really cool to be working alongside her as Jessica covers all the events that I can’t get to, which is awesome. There’ll be heaps more information to come out soon, so watch this space for more details of what we are up to here on that front. There will be trade stand site available as well, so if you

wish to get involved, drop me a line and get amongst!

In the meantime, rip into this issue and check out some cool-as club drag racing and a massive show in the Southern land. Plus an awesome “His and Hers” pair of cool rides!

Cheers all and thanks again!

STEVE BARRY’S

LIL DEUCECoupe

Now here’s a cool build that will send anyone who watched American Graffiti green with envy!

That famous movie from way back in 1973 is certainly responsible for a lot of Hot Rod builds around the world and it certainly grabbed Steve enough for him to want to build this cool-as Rod here.

These five window Coupes have always been a favorite ride of mine. They just scream Hot Rod and Street Race all at once. Those thoughts probably came about from watching that movie, but before then, these Lil Deuce Coupes were the street racers from pre-war time.

When you read what else Steve has had his hands on before building this, you’ll realise just how big the desire to have one must have been. There’s been some pretty cool rides in the shed before taking on this project.

Jumping headfirst into the Hot Rodding scene at the age of 17 and building his own scratch builds from then on is a pretty impressive history. But we all know, when that bug gets into your blood, you don’t stand a chance of not having one from then on!

This build here doesn’t just take on the stance of the Deuce Coupe, it takes on the entire custom scene and the era of

HIS

the sixties and seventies. The interior complete with custom upholstery still reflects the era with the stitched panel seats and trims, yet takes on the custom look with a flowing curve as if following the original guards but on the inside. The classic metal flake material inserts fully capturing the era and highlighting the flowing curve as well.

The interior roof panel is upholstered to match the theme over the interior roll cage to give the feel of stepping into a time capsule to head straight back to the sixties to cruise the main.

That’s soo cool!

The dash still retains the classic Deuce Coupe styling but upgraded with reliable modern analogue gauges to keep track of what’s happening up front in that growly ole V8.

The Moon Eyes rev counter mounted to the steering column to back the original styling of the sixties street racer.

There are some modern styling comforts in there though. Steve’s installed a centre consule to house the modern stereo and speakers for cranking the sounds. Although the exhaust caps are removable if he starts singing along anyway.

Up front sitting proud and in place is a tricked up, stroked out 383 Chevy out of a 350 block. There’s a fair bundle of goodies slotted into that unit to get this light weight

buggy to jump when need be.

Backed by a tricked and shift kitted 350 transmission to shove the horsepower back to the Ford 9” diff fitted with disc brakes to compliment the front disc brakes, this home built Lil Deuce is a cool unit for hitting the streets and drag strip with for sure.

The entire styling of this build sits awesome with the era and that famous movie. Right from the Moon Fuel tank up front to the fender less guards and them huge feet on the back. This is one very cool Coupe and I can certainly see Steve’s passion for the scene in this build here!

Been hot rodding since 17. Built a project T out of the hot rod magazine plans as my first car. All my cars have been put together by myself, never been able to afford a running car back in the day. Started Hibiscus Rodders in the 70’s with a bunch of mates and have been involved ever since either on committees and currently a NZHRA Delegate for our zone. Family is also inflicted with petrol in their veins (can’t help that with mum and dad addicted). Our son is about to cert a 700hp 1980 VB Commodore – a big dollar build with no expense spared. Our daughter and grand daughters are avid beach hoppers in the 66 Impala. Love everything about hot rodding, people, the smell, the noise, the music. The day I drive a car that sounds like an electric drill please screw the lid down on the box tight.

CROMWELL CLASSIC CAR Hot Rod festival

Here’s another awesome show from the South Island that’s well worth getting along to!

Normally held yearly, this show was one that had to be put off last year, but definitely came back with a vengeance this year!

On a scorching hot summers January day in Cromwell, this normally quiet reserve became the home for around a thousand cool-as Muscle Cars, Hot Rods and Classics, all rolling into town to make this show one of the biggest oneday shows in the Island, if not NZ!

Originally a “Ford Only” day organised by the Southland Ford Falcon Club, this show is now open to anyone with a cool

ride who just wants to come along and get amongst the day.

Everything from original vintage cars to modern day muscle and sports cars were on display, making it a day where anyone could find a car that either takes them back in time or makes them want to go get one.

It always blows me away what comes out of the caves for these shows. Cars that you may have forgotten about from your childhood on display as if straight out of the era looking as original as the day. Survivor cars like that always make me smile, especially knowing that if it was me or my mates who owned it, it would have been modified to any extent and lucky to be one piece today.

The good ole Muscle Cars are definitely the favorite in the South Island. The lower down the Island you drive, the more Australian Muscle Cars you come

across cruising the streets. For me, that’s just way cool and takes me right back to the day of growing up cruising the streets in an old Falcon, Valiant or Holden.

The American Muscle is still strong in the South though with some awesome examples on display at the show. The Hot Rod scene is much the same with a fair few clubs from NZHRA rolling in to make up an awesome collection of cool rides to wander around.

Classic, sport and custom bikes were also on display along with a couple of retro caravans and awesomely restored timber lake boats.

This has become one of those shows that people make an annual event to get along to. Grabbing a local BnB, motel or camping up to catch up with mates for the weekend.

It kicks off on the Friday night with an unofficial cruise run by Alpine Street Machines Inc. around the area for anyone in town early to join in. Mates and all piling into olds-cool rides just like the old days cruising the streets.

The Saturday Show Day is massive with heaps of vendors selling their goods for the caves and cars alike plus food vendors feeding the masses all day. Gazebo’s, deck chairs and chilly bins seem to appear from every car boot as the day kicks off, which is an awesome idea as the Cromwell summer days are pretty hot in the middle of the Island there!

For those hanging around for the weekend, there’s also a swap meet held on the Sunday for anyone looking for them elusive bits for a build or more goodies for the cave.

George and Teesh Payn had a scorcher of a day so to speak, taking home three trophies. Their Ford Pick-up taking out People’s Choice and a Top Ten Car trophy, plus their Yamaha 980 Classic trail bike taking out a Top three Bike placing in its stunning original glory.

It’s not only South Island cars rolling in here either. Jimmy Ward from Whangarei picked up a huge gift basket for furthest traveled.

This show here has a fixed date of the third Saturday in January, so it’s an awesome show to plan a trip around if you’re looking to travel the country catching different shows. It’s definitely one to check out and the Cromwell area has some pretty cool things going on to make it worthy of hanging around for a few days.

It’s definitely one for the “to do list”.

George Payn cruising off with the People’s choice of the day.

ANGELA BARRY’S

HERS & STAUNCH-AS 66Chevelle

GET AMONGST this sneaky cool build!

This was a surprise package when it rolled up next to Steve’s Coupe for a quick photo shoot.

I’ve always liked the Chevelle builds. The olds-cool Muscle Car shape of the sixties has that no-nonsense stance and attitude, complete with a growly V8, big feet and loud exhaust that scares the tree huggers and proudly states, “we drink dinosaurs!”

But what I did not realise is that Angela has built herself the beast of the Chevelle family here. A 454 Big Block, 4 speed slamming manual of a Chevelle.

It’s almost a sneaky little sleeper though with it’s factory finish and stance. If you pulled up beside Angela at the lights, I’m pretty sure your response would be “WTF” when the lights turn green!

You would definitely have to find your “A” game in a hurry or indicate left and pretend nothing was happening anyway! Hahaha.

What I really love about builds like this is

the factory appearance. It’s now a full-on Muscle Car and with the SS interior right down the factory bowtie radio still in the dash, the big steering wheel, it still retains the sixties Muscle Car vibe, and that’s cool!

The Hurst badge on the rear tying in the Hurst four speed floor shifter identifying the performance models of the era.

Under the big hood sits the tricked 454ci Big Block Chevrolet detailed just nicely with a polished aluminium inlet manifold and air cleaner. The rocker covers taking on the muscle theme with the polished fins over the black finish and the 454 sitting proud to make you smile!

The MSD ignition system ready to shove a good size spark down them leads, igniting that big block thump to expel via the headers to turn the tree huggers heads!

The un-molested body with the polished trim, Chevrolet badging and big chrome bumpers sits classily in any situation. The pillarless doors and wind down rear passenger windows creating that long roof sports appearance that the two door Chevelles revel in.

It would be a hard call as to which one of this “his and hers” team is the biggest rev head. But I’ve got a funny feeling with Angela’s direction for this Big Block Chevelle, that it could be her with the heavier foot. There’s a cool list of previous cars owned by Angela to know she’s got the rev-head bug as well.

It is definitely a cool mix having a staunch Muscle Car and Deuce Coupe lined up as a His and Her’s pairing, not to mention a 66 Impala for a cruiser to cover the bases.

I can certainly see why neither Steve or Angela yell “shotgun” when heading out anyway. It’s always “we’re taking both!”

Give me the dirt…

PRE 90’S TEAM CHAMPS DRAG RACING Tearing up the Sunday at Nostalgia’s!

Straight after the Nostalgia Drags which we featured in the last issue here, Bay Rodders – Tauranga hold the annual Pre 90’s Team Drag Racing meet. This makes for an awesome weekend of screaming V8’s and good old school drag racing entertainment!

Being held at the NAPA Auto Parts Dragway, Meremere for both events makes for an awesome opportunity to fully immerse yourself back into the scene of the days gone by.

With the weather Gods not playing ball for the full day on the Saturday for the Nostalgia’s, the finals of those classes ran over to the Sunday before the Teams racing kicked off.

This made for an awesome day of entertainment and with the sun beaming down on the track on the Sunday, the track soon got its temperature up and it was all go for the Gassers, FED’s and couple of Wild Bunch cars to roll on out, tearing it up down the quarter

mile to finish their racing off for the weekend as part of the Nostalgia Drags.

The sight of these old school drag cars lifting their front wheels to the horizon to peel back a sub 10 quarter mile is truly awesome, not to mention the incredible sound of an old V8 screaming to punch as much horsepower and torque to the rear wheels as possible. That just rules!

The double bonus for this event was the demonstration from Karl Boniface with the Castrol Nitro Funny car coming out to blow the crowd

away with just how crazy these awesome machines are!

These eye watering, ear throbbing, gut punching machines are just incredible to watch and hear in action. They are a drug all by themselves!

With the day turning more into a summer’s day after Saturday’s effort, the car park area soon turned into a Hot Rod show all by itself. Vendors and food stalls were full noise again serving up food, coffee’s and selling goodies for the cave. The Pits crew were selling their new brand “Fast Eddie” clothing along with a heap of cool memorabilia.

The days racing for the teams event kicked off with some awesome builds coming out as well.

Teams are made up with four members with pre 1990 cars, running street tyres, a warrant of fitness, road registration plus affiliation with NZHRA, which can be purchased as a day pass as well.

Points are tallied over the day for winning races, determining just who will be top drag racing team for the day and of course the bragging rights for another year!

Being street cars didn’t mean the action wasn’t fast though. In the Pre-49 class Brendon Jones cracked a time of 11.89 at 115mph. Craig Foot in his Corvette was a crowd pleaser with his burnouts crossing the line at 118mph in the pre-78 American class. In the wheel standing Gasser class, Ross Welan in his 34 Ford was fair peddling at 141.5mph cracking the sub 10 quarter mile at 9.562 seconds. The vintage gassers weren’t far behind with Kevin Middlemiss clocking 139.99mph in his 63 Dodge Dart.

Robert “Bobby” Owens with his 64 Falcon shredded the time clock with his 7.443 second pass at 183.94mph. That takes an awesome launch and consistently good run to pull that and take the Wild Bunch winning prize for the event.

Stepping right back in time with a Front Engine Dragster was Ross Brown. This awesomely well built and presented machine pulling a 7.2 second pass at 190.67mph! These are such incredible machines to watch launch! To think that 9” Diff is fixed right between Ross’s legs at 190mph with that V8 screaming its guts out in front of him is impressive to say the least!

The comp 1 & 2 classes were full of entertainment as well. Peter Fink in Class 1 was still pulling a sub 10 at 131mph while comp 2’s Danny Ash Kittle in his 67 Chevy pulled a 10.86 second pass at 125mph. Being the fastest doesn’t always mean the winner though, as that’s drag racing on the day with reaction times and lights to contend with.

As for the winning teams “Random Team” took out the overall prize of bragging rights with “Gear Jammers 2 team” grabbing first losers, DOH, my bad! Second place I mean!! hehehe!

This is such a cool weekend to get amongst! Fully taking you back to the era when drag racing on a Sunday was just the done thing! Camping out on the back field makes for an easy weekend and the chance to kick back and soak up the atmosphere and re-live the era. Bay Rodders also organize entertainment on the Saturday evening for those staying over between the two events as well which makes for a full-on weekend of fun and entertainment for sure!
