For most people, switching off our everyday thoughts and checklists is the hardest part of getting to sleep at night. But for me the musings which loom, promising to keep me from slumber, arrive in musical form. I hear melodies swirling around my mind at night, so I have to make sure I have a recording device at my side, otherwise I’d never get any sleep. Sometimes I wake up in the morning, and before I’ve had my coffee or I’ve sat down at the piano – before writing even a single note down on manuscript paper – I have complete clarity in my mind as to how I want the score to sound. It has become a daily habit to break down into little pieces the scores in my subconscious and to arrange them on paper, like a jigsaw puzzle of my melodic dreams. These melodies are sometimes purely intuitive, and many are memories of jazz, folk or classical tunes to which I have listened. The echoes dance around between the subliminal spaces of my mind until they take a completely new melodious form. With The Fall Dance, I hope to take you on a journey. The songs allow you to observe and explore the visions of my night-times and the dream-like variations of my real life experiences. Each score has a story behind it, and it has been wonderful to work with great musicians on each track. Playing alongside talented people who understand one’s ideas is a unique experience that can continually push compositions further. Performing an original piece with others can give it new life, often overtaking my initial conception of how it should sound. Working and touring with many contemporary musicians has breathed life into this project. The music I’ve written on this album came to fruition in between tours. Collaborating with so many different types of artist has been the inspiration and driving force that pressed me to explore my own vision of music. I truly believe that music is about allowing ourselves to be human, to be sincere with our emotions and to discover the freedom to express it. My mode of expression is music, and this stems from an urgent desire to be honest with myself. I hope that others will find their own truths between the notes.

Den meisten Menschen fällt es schwer, abends beim Einschlafen abzuschalten. Mir aber kommen vor dem Einschlummern musikalische Gedanken, die mich wachhalten und Grübeleien vermeiden. Ich höre Melodien, die nachts in meinem Kopf herumschwirren, weshalb ich auch stets ein Aufnahmegerät zur Seite habe. Sonst könnte ich nicht einschlafen. Manchmal wache ich morgens auf, und bevor ich meinen Kaffee trinke oder mich ans Klavier setze, bevor ich auch nur eine einzige Note ins Notenheft schreibe, sehe ich die Partitur ganz klar vor meinen Augen, so wie sie zu klingen hat. Es ist mir zur täglichen Gewohnheit geworden, in meinem Unterbewusstsein die Partitur in kleine Stücke zu teilen, wie ein Puzzle meiner melodischen Träume. Diese Melodien sind manchmal rein intuitiv, erinnern aber auch an die Jazz-, Folk- und klassische Musik, die ich kenne. Ihr Echo tanzt in den unterschwelligen Räumen meines Geistes herum, bis eine völlig neue melodische Form entsteht. Mit The Fall Dance will ich meine Hörer auf eine Reise mitnehmen. Die Songs erlauben ihnen, die nächtlichen Visionen und traumähnlichen Variationen meiner Lebenserfahrungen zu beobachten und zu erforschen. Jede Partitur beinhaltet eine Geschichte, und es war mir ein Vergnügen, bei den einzelnen Aufnahmen mit großen Musikern zusammenzuarbeiten. Mit begabten Musikern zu spielen, die meine Gedanken nachvollziehen können, ist eine einzigartige Erfahrung, die meine Kompositionen beschwingen. Ein neues Stück in anderer Besetzung zu hören, kann es beleben und nicht selten meine ursprüngliche Klang-Vorstellung übertreffen. Mit vielen Musikern zu arbeiten und auf Tourneen zu gehen, hat Leben in dieses Projekt gebracht. Die Musik dieser CD entstand in den Zeiträumen zwischen den Tourneen. Die Zusammenarbeit mit verschiedenen Künstlern war die Inspirationsquelle und treibende Kraft, die mich veranlasste, meinen eigenen Musikvorstellungen nachzugehen. Ich glaube wirklich daran, dass die Musik uns menschlicher macht und uns auffordert, aufrichtig zu sein mit unseren eigenen Gefühlen und sie frei zu äußern. Ich drücke mich musikalisch aus, und dies ergibt sich aus dem Drang, mir selbst gegenüber ehrlich zu sein. Ich hoffe, dass auch andere Menschen ihre eigene Wahrheit zwischen den Noten finden können.

Per la maggioranza delle persone è difficile nel momento in cui si prende sonno lasciare andare i propri pensieri, mettendo da parte la lista delle cose da fare. Nel mio caso le visioni che attentano il mio sonno si manifestano invece sotto forma di musica. È proprio di notte infatti che sento a volte turbinare nella mia mente le melodie: quando queste si manifestano devo essere certa di poterle registrare per non farmele sfuggire. Solo allora riesco a prendere sonno. Al mattino, prima del caffè o di essermi seduta al pianoforte o, prima ancora di aver messo sul pentagramma una sola nota, mi è subito chiaro come dare corpo alla musica immaginata. È mia abitudine scomporre nella mente la musica in piccole parti per poi trasferirla su carta, come pezzi di un puzzle che emergono dal mio inconscio sotto forma di sogni melodici. A volte queste melodie sono il risultato di una vera e propria intuizione, ma molto spesso sono rievocazioni di brani jazz, folk o di musica classica, che danzano negli spazi subliminali della mia mente, fino a che non si materializzano in una forma melodica compiuta. L’album The Fall Dance, che qui presento, spero che costituisca anche per voi un viaggio. I brani permettono di osservare ed esplorare le mie visioni notturne e le variazioni oniriche delle mie esperienze di vita. Ogni brano porta a una storia. È stato entusiasmante lavorare con grandi musicisti. Suonare con artisti di talento, che entrano subito nella tua visione musicale, è un’esperienza privilegiata che spinge la composizione a vette ancora più alte. Questo può conferire ai brani una nuova vita, che va oltre le proprie aspettative iniziali. Lavorare in tournée con diversi musicisti contemporanei ha dato respiro a questo progetto. La musica composta per questo album ha preso corpo tra un tour e un altro. Collaborare con artisti così diversi tra loro è stata, oltre alla mia principale fonte di ispirazione, soprattutto una forza trainante che mi ha spinto ad esplorare i miei punti di vista sulla musica. Sono profondamente convinta che la musica permette di avvicinarsi alle espressioni essenziali della nostra umanità, di non nascondere le proprie emozioni e di scoprire la libertà per esprimerle. La mia modalità espressiva è la musica e questo deriva dal mio urgente bisogno di essere onesta con me stessa. Spero che anche altri possano trovare una propria autenticità tra le note.
