ENG I started to write the tunes recorded on this album many years ago, while I was living in Berlin. I spent much time alone, in a little room on the east side. The ideas came easily, but I never imagined that an album would come of it many years later. This album means a lot to me: it emerged from many years of trouble, from many different causes. What’s more, this is the first of my albums on which I only play the piano and don’t sing. The concept of the album came only when I was recording in the studio. I discarded some of the songs I had written, but revisited earlier writings. The musicians I have chosen to work with have established the necessary conditions for realising my music in a creative way. Our approach is similar and shared: the softness of sound, leaving spaces, listening to each other. My music speaks of me, of my inner world. It is a compendium of human and musical experiences; difficult to define. Each piece has its own universe, which I have tried to make intelligible beyond music through the titles of each song. When I started thinking about the realisation of every work, I thought about the voice of the sax, an instrument that I love very much. I did not initially write the songs with the sax in mind, but this instrument, together with the piano, seemed to me the most suitable choice to represent my music. The album starts with The Gloom, which I wrote while waiting to play for a dancer’s lesson. I chose this song to open the CD because I think it reflects what I would like to communicate on this little musical journey. Like the step, steady and slow, round, tenacious but uncertain, of a pair of tango dancers while drawing undefined circles upon a wooden floor, this song accompanies us in a dimension made of “perhaps” and “because”. Outside it rains; a sleepless wind keeps inviting you to go out, to look for something, to raise the neck of the raincoat while waiting at an intersection for someone who, unfortunately, not even tonight will come. The Gloom is an inner dance in which there are neither winners nor losers. A test of courage for the man who, taking off his shoes and girding his head, decides for the first time to enter the city of crystal, full of chromatic reflections, lights and shadows which is the atmosphere of this tune. I do not know if the music of The Gloom is as clear as that description, through which a dear friend tried to express it, but I assure you that my travelling companions and I felt those very things while we were playing it. Massimiliano Coclite graduated in piano and jazz from the Conservatoires of Teramo and Bari with the highest marks and praise, before attending the Pescarese Academy of Music in the three-year high-level piano course with Maestro M. Marvulli. He studied with Claudio Menéndez, Michele Marvulli, Pierluigi Camicia, Benedetto Lupo, and Alexander Lonquich. He has won numerous Italian and international awards, and has played with symphony orchestras in Pescara, Bari, and Bucharest. In Germany, with Romeo Tudorache and Serge Collot, Massimiliano Coclite played in several cities as part of the Koblenz Chamber Music Festival. He has played as a duo with Patrick De Ritiis, the principal bassoon player of the Wiener Simphoniker. He has attended numerous masterclasses with Benedetto Lupo, Alexander Lonquich, Aldo Ciccolini, Rudolph Buchbinder, and Prof. Marisa Somma. He has collaborated for many years with the wind quintet D’Annunzio. Since 2000 he has broadened his artistic activity in jazz, as a pianist, singer, composer and arranger. He has recorded four albums in various roles, and is part of the Trem Azul group with whom he has recorded three albums. As programmer and Roland demonstrator for 20 years, he has played in Brazil, the USA, China, Japan, Indonesia, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Hungary, Russia, Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and India, in festivals, jazz clubs, and giving music workshops. Since 2012 the magazine JazzIt has featured Massimiliano Coclite as amongst the principal Italian crooners. He is a jazz singing teacher at the Music Conservatory “A. Casella” in L’Aquila and the Music Conservatory “Nino Rota” in Monopoli.

DEU Die Stücke auf diesem Album begann ich vor vielen Jahren zu schreiben, während ich in Berlin lebte. Ich verbrachte viel Zeit allein in einem kleinen Zimmer in der Eastside der Stadt. Die Ideen flogen mir mit Leichtigkeit zu, aber ich hätte nie gedacht, dass viele Jahre später ein Album daraus entstehen würde. Dieses Album bedeutet mir sehr viel: Es entstand in einer lange Jahre andauernden Zeit großer Schwierigkeiten – aus vielen unterschiedlichen Gründen. Außerdem ist dies das erste meiner Alben, auf dem ich nur Klavier spiele und nicht singe. Das Konzept des Albums entstand erst bei den Aufnahmen im Studio. Ich verwarf einige der Songs, die ich geschrieben hatte, griff jedoch auch auf frühere Kompositionen zurück. Die Musiker, mit denen ich gearbeitet habe, schafften die notwendigen Voraussetzungen, um meine Musik kreativ umzusetzen. Unsere Herangehensweise ist ähnlich und drückt sich auf gleiche Weise aus: Weichheit des Klanges, Freiräume gewähren, einander zuhören. Meine Musik spricht von mir, von meiner inneren Welt. Sie ist ein Kompendium menschlicher und musikalischer Erfahrungen; schwer zu definieren. Jedes Stück hat sein eigenes Universum, das ich durch die jeweiligen Titel über die Musik hinaus verständlich zu machen suchte. Als ich anfing, über die Realisierung der einzelnen Stücke nachzudenken, kam ich auf die Stimme des Saxophons, ein Instrument, das ich sehr liebe. Ursprünglich hatte ich beim Schreiben der Songs nicht das Saxophon im Sinn, aber – zusammen mit dem Klavier– schien es mir die geeignetste Wahl für meine Musik zu sein. Das Album beginnt mit The Gloom, das ich geschrieben habe, als ich darauf wartete, für eine Tanzstunde zu spielen. Ich habe dieses Stück gewählt, um die CD zu eröffnen, weil es das reflektiert, was ich auf dieser kleinen musikalischen Reise mitteilen möchte. Wie die Schritte eines Tangopaares, gleichmäßig und schleppend, rund und bestimmt, aber doch zögernd, während sie undefinierte Kreise auf dem Holzboden zeichnen, begleitet uns dieser Song in einer Dimension, die aus „vielleicht“ und „weil“ besteht. Draußen regnet es. Ein frischer Wind lädt dazu ein hinauszugehen, nach etwas Ausschau zu halten, den Kragen des Regenmantels hochzuschlagen, während man an einer Kreuzung auf jemanden wartet, der auch heute Abend wohl nicht kommen wird. The Gloom ist ein intimer Tanz, bei dem es weder Gewinner noch Verlierer gibt. Eine Mutprobe für den Mann, der barfuß aber mit klarem Kopf zum ersten Mal die gläserne Stadt betritt, voller chromatischer Reflexionen, Lichter und Schatten, die die Atmosphäre dieser Melodie bestimmen. Ich weiß nicht, ob die Musik von The Gloom so klar ist wie diese Beschreibung eines lieben Freundes, aber ich versichere Ihnen, dass meine Reisegefährten und ich genau diese Dinge gespürt haben, während wir sie spielten. Massimiliano Coclite absolvierte Klavier und Jazz an den Konservatorien von Teramo und Bari mit Bestnoten und Auszeichnung, bevor er an der Pescarese Academy of Music einen dreijährigen Klavierkurs bei Maestro M. Marvulli belegte. Er studierte bei Claudio Menéndez, Michele Marvulli, Pierluigi Camicia, Benedetto Lupo und Alexander Lonquich. Er hat zahlreiche italienische und internationale Preise gewonnen und spielte mit Symphonieorchestern in Pescara, Bari und Bukarest. In Deutschland spielte Massimiliano Coclite im Rahmen des Koblenzer Kammermusikfestivals mit Romeo Tudorache und Serge Collot in mehreren Städten. Er spielte im Duo mit Patrick De Ritiis, dem ersten Fagottisten der Wiener Symphoniker. Er besuchte zahlreiche Meisterkurse bei Benedetto Lupo, Alexander Lonquich, Aldo Ciccolini, Rudolph Buchbinder und Prof. Marisa Somma. Seit vielen Jahren arbeitet er mit dem Bläserquintett D’Annunzio zusammen. Seit 2000 hat er seine künstlerische Tätigkeit als Pianist, Sänger, Komponist und Arrangeur auch auf Jazz erweitert. Er hat vier Alben als Solist aufgenommen und ist Mitglied der Trem Azul-Gruppe, mit der er drei Alben veröffentlicht hat. Als Programmierer und Roland Vorführer spielt er seit 20 Jahren in Brasilien, den USA, China, Japan, Indonesien, Dänemark, Deutschland, Polen, Ungarn, Russland, Spanien, Portugal, Frankreich, Belgien, Luxemburg und Indien auf Festivals und in Jazz Clubs; außerdem leitet er Musik-Workshops. Seit 2012 präsentiert das Magazin „JazzIt“ Massimiliano Coclite als einen der wichtigsten italienischen Crooner. Er ist Jazzgesangslehrer am Musikkonservatorium A. Casella in L’Aquila und am Musikkonservatorium Nino Rota in Monopoli.

ITA Ho iniziato a scrivere i brani di questo album molti anni fa, mentre vivevo a Berlino. Ho passato molto tempo da solo lì, in una piccola stanza ad est. Le idee sono arrivate facilmente, ma non avrei mai immaginato che ne sarebbe uscito un album molti anni dopo. Questo album significa molto per me: è il risultato musicale di anni difficili, per diversi motivi. Inoltre, questo è il primo dei miei album in cui suono solo il piano e non canto. Il concept dell‘album è venuto solo quando stavo registrando in studio. Ho scartato alcune delle canzoni che avevo scritto, ma ho rivisitato alcuni brani composti in precedenza. I musicisti con cui ho scelto di lavorare hanno stabilito le condizioni necessarie per realizzare la mia musica in modo creativo. Il nostro approccio è simile e condiviso: la morbidezza del suono, lasciare spazi, ascoltarsi l‘un l‘altro. La mia musica parla di me, del mio mondo interiore. È un compendio di esperienze umane e musicali; difficile da definire. Ogni pezzo ha il suo universo, che ho cercato di rendere intellegibile oltre la musica attraverso i titoli di ogni canzone. Quando ho iniziato a pensare alla realizzazione dei brani, ho pensato alla voce del sax, uno strumento che amo moltissimo. Inizialmente non avevo scritto le canzoni pensando al sax, ma questo strumento, insieme al piano, mi è sembrato la voce più adatta a rappresentare la mia musica. L‘album inizia con The Gloom, che ho scritto mentre aspettavo di suonare per una lezione di danza. Ho scelto questa canzone per aprire il CD perché penso che rispecchi ciò che vorrei comunicare in questo piccolo viaggio musicale. “Come Il passo, costante e lento, rotondo, tenace ma incerto di una coppia di ballerini di tango mentre disegnano sul legno del pavimento cerchi indefiniti, cosí Coclite ci accompagna in una dimensione fatta di ‘forse’ e di ‘perche’. Fuori piove ed un insonne vento non smette di invitarti ad uscire, a cercare un dubbio, ad alzarti Il collo del impermeabile, mentre aspetti ad un incrocio, qualcuno che, purtroppo nemmeno stanotte verrà. The Gloom é un ballo interiore (aperto?), dove non ci sono ne vincitori ne vinti. Un prova di coraggio per colui, che togliendosi le scarpe e cingendo il capo, decide per la prima volta entrare nella città di cristallo, piena riflessi cromatici, luci e ombre che compongono l’atmosfera di questo brano”. Non so se la musica di The Gloom sia chiara come questa descrizione, attraverso la quale un caro amico ha cercato di raccontarla, ma vi assicuro che i miei compagni di viaggio ed io abbiamo provato quelle stesse cose mentre stavamo suonando. Massimiliano Coclite si è diplomato in pianoforte e jazz presso i Conservatori di Teramo e Bari con il massimo dei voti e la lode, prima di frequentare l‘Accademia di Musica Pescarese nel corso triennale di pianoforte di alto perfezionamento con il Maestro M. Marvulli. Ha studiato con Claudio Menéndez, Michele Marvulli, Pierluigi Camicia, Benedetto Lupo e Alexander Lonquich. Ha vinto numerosi premi nazionali ed internazionali e ha suonato con le orchestre sinfoniche di Pescara, Bari e Bucarest. In Germania, con Romeo Tudorache e Serge Collot, Massimiliano Coclite ha suonato in diverse città nell‘ambito del Koblenz Chamber Music Festival. Ha suonato in coppia con Patrick De Ritiis, primo fagotto del Wiener Simphoniker. Ha frequentato numerose masterclass con Benedetto Lupo, Alexander Lonquich, Aldo Ciccolini, Rudolph Buchbinder e la prof.ssa Marisa Somma. Ha collaborato per molti anni con il quintetto a fiati D‘Annunzio. Dal 2000 ha ampliato la sua attività artistica nel jazz, come pianista, cantante, compositore e arrangiatore. Ha registrato quattro album come solista e fa parte del gruppo Trem Azul con cui ha registrato tre album. Programmatore e dimostratore Roland per 20 anni, ha suonato in Brasile, Stati Uniti, Cina, Giappone, Indonesia, Danimarca, Germania, Polonia, Ungheria, Russia, Spagna, Portogallo, Francia, Belgio, Lussemburgo e India, in festival, jazz club e università musicali, tenendo workshop. Dal 2012 la rivista JazzIt colloca Massimiliano Coclite come uno dei principali crooners italiani. È docente di canto jazz presso il Conservatorio di musica “Nino Rota” di Monopoli e presso il Conservatorio di musica „A. Casella“ dell’Aquila.
