Broken Blue is a modern jazz album. We understand modern jazz as an approach to jazz improvisation characterised by abstraction, lack of figuration, asymmetry, dominance of the subjective element in the management of musical images and constant and intense interaction between the soloist and the accompanying musicians. We could also say something that many musicians describe somewhat more generally, that modern jazz is an approach that seeks more and more freedom in the management of all the musical materials that jazz improvisation deals with, namely: melody, harmony, rhythm, phrasing, modes of narration and form. Broken Blue is an exploration of different episodes, different possibilities or versions of such an approach. Each episode is an original composition, written to tell a unique story, to create a distinct musical place. Spiral Trio

Blue Flower is the application of an abstract expressionistic, fractured playing style in a tropical (modal) environment. The album closes with Portrait in Yellow, a purely impressionistic composition, with timbral harmony and a performative approach characterised by introspection, an implicit inner pulse and a mood of melancholy and reminiscence. The connection, the collaboration of a group of people in order to achieve an artistic result that will arouse the nervous system of the recipient, is a balance between acceptance and initiative. Spyros grew up in Zakynthos. He loved Beethoven and The Beatles. Later he found his way to Dr. John, and the path to Brad Mehldau, Keith Jarrett and Paul Bley includes many episodes. Arion grew up in Kalamata. He learned the secrets of music at an early age and when he first heard double bass playing in a jazz group, he knew that his studies in music would go in that direction. Anastasis grew up in Athens, in Peristeri, and among the streets of urban life the music of Tom Waits introduced him to jazz for the first time. Three components found themselves with the same teacher learning jazz improvisation. A real collaboration began, exploring at first the jazz standards and the limits of their transformation for personal expression. In 2017 they released their first album, played in jazz clubs, toured Spain and Portugal, and this musical experience strengthened the trust and communication between them. The modern approach of the great “company” of Paul Bley, Keith Jarrett, Paul Motian, Bill Evans, Jack DeJohnette, Gary Peacock, Steve Lacy, etc. is what the trio has accepted over time as their musical identity and direction. Interplay is now becoming an important element of their performance style and as the musicians mature this happens with greater clarity and focus. They explore the spaces that their music makes and it is through these that the original compositions emerge that now form the largest part of their repertoire. They play at major festivals in Greece and test their compositions in jazz clubs and on tour. From 2014 to the present day the members of the trio have shared the stage, a car full of instruments on tour, the studio, the rehearsal, the nervousness before a big live gig, the insecurity after a bad gig, the different expectations, the different speeds, the different circumstances of life, the feeling of shared success after a good take in the studio ... and balance arises because someone accepted something they might disagree with and someone else took the initiative to lead when they felt confident inside.

Το «Broken Blue» είναι ένα album μοντέρνας τζαζ. Ως μοντέρνα τζαζ αντιλαμβανόμαστε μια προσέγγιση του τζαζ αυτοσχεδιασμού που χαρακτηρίζεται από αφαιρετικότητα, έλλειψη παραστατικότητας, ασυμμετρία, κυριαρχία του υποκειμενικού στοιχείου στη διαχείριση των μουσικών εικόνων και διαρκή και έντονη διάδραση ανάμεσα στον σολίστα και τους μουσικούς που συνοδεύουν. Θα μπορούσαμε να πούμε επίσης κάτι που πολλοί μουσικοί περιγράφουν κάπως πιο γενικά, πως η μοντέρνα τζαζ είναι μια προσέγγιση που αναζητά όλο και περισσότερη ελευθερία στη διαχείριση όλων των μουσικών υλικών που πραγματεύεται ο τζαζ αυτοσχεδιασμός, δηλαδή, της μελωδίας, της αρμονίας, του ρυθμού, της φρασεολογίας, των τρόπων αφήγησης και της φόρμας. Τo «Broken Blue» είναι μία εξερεύνηση διαφορετικών επεισοδίων, διαφορετικών δυνατοτήτων ή εκδοχών μιας τέτοιας προσέγγισης. Κάθε επεισόδιο είναι μια πρωτότυπη σύνθεση, γραμμένη για να αφηγηθεί μια ξεχωριστή ιστορία, να δημιουργήσει έναν ξεχωριστό μουσικό τόπο με ιδιαίτερα χαρακτηριστικά. Spiral Trio

Το Rubicon εξερευνά την λυρικά ιμπρεσιονιστική 1940 που έχει συνδεθεί ιστορικά και πολιτισμικά πλευρά, μέσα από ένα πρίσμα ελαστικού ρυθμού, με την εμφάνιση του bebop. Χαρακτηριστικά του τύπου αυτού που προσπαθήσαμε να αποδώσουμε αφαίρεσης και χρωματικότητας. με τρόπο μουσικό είναι η στρυφνάδα, η Το Hig χαρακτηρίζεται από ιμπρεσιονιστική, χαλαρότητα, ένας ιδιότυπα ακατανόητος τρόπος ηχοχρωματική αρμονία που υπηρετεί ένα παίξιμο ομιλίας και ίσως ένας τόνος ειρωνείας και που χαρακτηρίζεται από νευρικότητα, μία σαρκασμού. απόχρωση αγωνίας, ενέργεια και εξωστρέφεια. Αποτελεί την πιο ήσυχη στιγμή αφαιρετικού εξπρεσιονιστικού, σπασμένου του τρίο σε αυτόν το δίσκο και χαρακτηρίζεται παιξίματος σε ένα τροπικό (Modal) περιβάλλον. από λυρισμό, εσωστρέφεια και μία απόχρωση νοσταλγίας. Το άλμπουμ κλείνει με το poRtRait in Yellow, μια καθαρά ιμπρεσιονιστική σύνθεση, με Το bipolaR – έχει βασιστεί στην αρμονία του ηχοχρωματική αρμονία και μια εκτελεστική που χαρακτηρίζεται από jazz standard Solar – είναι μια ιδιότυπη μουσική προσέγγιση μεταφορά ενός ανθρωπολογικού τύπου, του εσωστρέφεια, άδηλο εσωτερικό παλμό και μία παλιού hipster της Νέας Υόρκης της δεκαετίας του διάθεση μελαγχολίας και αναπόλησης. Η σύνδεση, η συνεργασία μιας ομάδας ανθρώπων με στόχο ένα καλλιτεχνικό αποτέλεσμα, που θα εγείρει το νευρικό σύστημα του αποδέκτη του, είναι μια ισορροπία ανάμεσα στην αποδοχή και την πρωτοβουλία. Ο Σπύρος μεγάλωσε στην Ζάκυνθο. Αγάπησε τον Beethoven και τους Beatles. Αργότερα βρήκε στο δρόμο του τον Dr. John και η πορεία μέχρι τον Brad Mehldau, τον Keith Jarrett και τον Paul Bley περιλαμβάνει πολλά επεισόδια. Ο Αρίωνας μεγάλωσε στην Καλαμάτα. Έμαθε από νωρίς τα μυστικά της μουσικής και όταν άκουσε για πρώτη φορά κοντραμπάσο να παίζει σε ένα jazz group, κατάλαβε πως οι σπουδές του στην μουσική θα είχαν αυτήν την κατεύθυνση. Ο Αναστάσης μεγάλωσε στην Αθήνα, στο Περιστέρι, και ανάμεσα στους δρόμους της αστικής ζωής βρήκε τον Tom Waits να τον φέρει για πρώτη φορά σε επαφή με την jazz. Τρεις συνιστώσες που βρέθηκαν στον ίδιο δάσκαλο μαθαίνοντας jazz αυτοσχεδιασμό. Εκεί ξεκίνησε μια πραγματική συνεργασία εξερευνώντας στην αρχή τα jazz standards και τα όρια της μεταμόρφωσής τους με στόχο την προσωπική έκφραση. Το 2017 βγάζουν τον πρώτο τους δίσκο, παίζουν σε jazz clubs, κάνουν περιοδεία στην Ισπανία και την Πορτογαλία και η μουσική εμπειρία δυναμώνει την εμπιστοσύνη και την επικοινωνία ανάμεσα στους. Η μοντέρνα προσέγγιση της μεγάλης «παρέας» των Paul Bley, Keith Jarrett, Paul Motian, Bill Evans, Jack DeJohnette, Gary Peacock, Steve Lacy, κ.α. είναι αυτή που το τρίο με τον καιρό αποδέχτηκε σαν μουσική ταυτότητα και κατεύθυνση.

Το interplay γίνεται πλέον ένα σημαντικό στοιχείο του παιξίματος και καθώς οι μουσικοί ωριμάζουν τόσο αυτό συμβαίνει με μεγαλύτερη σαφήνεια και στοχοθέτηση.
Εξερευνούν τους χώρους που φτιάχνει η μουσική τους και μέσα από αυτούς προκύπτουν οι original συνθέσεις που πλέον είναι το μεγαλύτερο κομμάτι του ρεπερτορίου τους. Παίζουν σε σημαντικά φεστιβάλ στην Ελλάδα και δοκιμάζουν τις συνθέσεις τους σε Jazz clubs και στην δεύτερη περιοδεία στην Ευρώπη που θα γίνει λίγο πριν την πανδημία του κορονοϊού. Τότε κάνουν την ηχογράφηση του δεύτερου δίσκου.
Από το 2014 μέχρι σήμερα τα μέλη του τρίο έχουν μοιραστεί την σκηνή, το γεμάτο όργανα αμάξι της περιοδείας, το στούντιο, την πρόβα, την νευρικότητα πριν από ένα μεγάλο live, την ανασφάλεια μετά από ένα κακό live, τις διαφορετικές προσδοκίες, τις διαφορετικές ταχύτητες, τις διαφορετικές συνθήκες της ζωής, την αίσθηση της κοινής επιτυχίας μετά από ένα καλό take στο στούντιο … και η ισορροπία προκύπτει επειδή κάποιος αποδέχτηκε κάτι με το οποίο ίσως διαφωνούσε και κάποιος άλλος πήρε την πρωτοβουλία να οδηγήσει όταν μέσα του ένιωθε σίγουρος.
