Octopus-Onboard for world’s largest heavy cargo ship Dockwise Vanguard Amarcon, a member of the ABB group, today announced that it has received an OCTOPUS-Onboard order for the new build Dockwise Vanguard. This vessel is the largest and most advanced heavy lift vessel ever built. The vessel was launched in November 2012 and is currently undergoing her sea trials. Dockwise was founded in 1993 as a merger between Wijsmuller Transport and Dock Express Shipping, making Dockwise the world’s largest and most versatile heavy transport shipping company. The Dockwise Vanguard shall be equipped with OCTOPUS-Onboard for the purpose of motion monitoring, response prediction and heavyweather decision support during
heavy cargo transportations. The vessel shall also be equipped with a three sensor motion measurement set-up. This way multiple critical locations of the vessel, for instance the cargo, can be measured and displayed on the bridge of the vessel. The OCTOPUS product line is part of ABB’s Vessel Information and Control (VICO)
Aberdeen harbour submits directions for growth document to national planning framework 3 Aberdeen Harbour Board has submitted a Directions for Growth document to the National Planning Framework, in response to its call for candidate developments. The document outlines the findings from an ongoing feasibility study, which was launched in September to assess the viability of potential expansion options for a new or improved harbour facility. Three potential locations out with the existing harbour have been considered – North Beach, immediately to the north of the harbour; Nigg Bay, immediately to the south of the harbour; and south of Cove Bay, approximately five miles south of the harbour. Further research of the options – against criteria including the potential impact on traffic levels and the availability of land – indicates the south of Cove Bay and the North Beach options would likely result in significantly negative impacts. The identification of these sites and the emergence of a potentially preferred site in Nigg Bay or the continued development of the existing harbour, will now be subject to additional analysis including traffic modelling and visual appraisal. The potential viability of the locations will also be informed by the ongoing feasibility study, and consultations with
customers, stakeholders, local communities and local authorities, as well as Scottish Government elected members and officials. The wider engagement plan will commence in early 2013 and continue throughout the year. Commenting on this latest development, Aberdeen Harbour Board chief executive Colin Parker said: “Any future development of the port will require a robust business case, however, Aberdeen Harbour is a key regional resource that generates more than £500million for the North East economy annually. Potential development opportunities will help safeguard the port and the city’s position within the energy industry, ensuring the harbour is equipped to accommodate the growth in activity anticipated in the years to come. With larger vessels and increasing traffic projected, enhancing facilities will ensure Aberdeen continues to meet the needs of customers while attracting new business to the North East of Scotland. “With all the subsea related activity involved in the decommissioning of offshore installations, an upsurge in shipment of oil and gas equipment to key markets including Norway, Russia and Africa, and significant requirements for the support of offshore wind developments, our customers have also clearly indicated a need for consideration of expanded harbour facilities to accommodate their anticipated requirements in the long term.”
systems suite which incorporates a full range of automation and advisory solutions specifically for marine applications, based on ABB’s field-proven process automation technologies. This recent appointment is the seventeenth order from Dockwise for an OCTOPUS-Onboard installation. “For Amarcon, it is exciting to deliver our decision support software to a vessel of this magnitude, that can carry anything from a ship or drilling rig, up to an entire Floating Production Storage and Offloading unit,” said Leon Adegeest, founder and General Manager of Amarcon.

New facility in Aberdeen highlights continued global growth for Expro International oilfield services company, Expro, is opening a new facility in Aberdeen to enhance its growing well intervention business, following a strong annual global revenue increase to more than $1billion (£630 million). The site, in Howe Moss Avenue Dyce, will house Expro’s wireline, well intervention, well services, well integrity (Safewells) and cased hole logging services to help provide integrated and multi-skilled teams. The new premises in the Kirkhill Industrial Estate comprises of two buildings, each with office space, workshops and yards, covering a total of 6,186 square metres (the equivalent of 1 1/2 football pitches). As a result of an internal employee competition, the buildings have been named after two Scottish legends: Andrew Carnegie, the 20th century tycoon and philanthropist, and James Young, who invented the process of extracting oil from coal in the early 1800s. The Carnegie and Young buildings will eventually hold Expro’s combined well intervention services

team, of approximately 200 employees. Expro has employed more than 150 new employees in the UK over the past year, and continues to support employees with specialised development programmes. Through the company’s ex-forces recruiting plan, Expro currently has a number of ex-forces employees in training at its Centre of Excellence in Aberdeen. Expro’s Graduate Development Plan has also attracted high-calibre graduates and put them through a structured development programme. Expro is looking to recruit at least another 40 people in the UK area across subsea, wireline and well test product lines, in the next few months. Keith Palmer, Expro’s Europe CIS Region Director, said: “This year has seen another period
of strong growth for Expro in the UK. Our considerable investment in additional facilities in Aberdeen will allow us to consolidate our well intervention capabilities, further enhancing our ability to deliver services to our customers. “It also gives us the opportunity to upgrade our workshop and yard which in turn, will allow us to increase product quality and maintain our focus around operational excellence. The additional workshop space will provide us the additional capacity we need to accommodate increased subsea landing string build capacity for the long term future. “Expro is continually expanding. Strong client demand, increased revenue and investment in new markets has allowed us to hire more than 1,000 people globally in the past year, and we’re continuously increasing both onshore and offshore work. With a five year plan to double our workforce, investment in new premises and growth opportunities is critical.”

Damen Shipyards (nl) acquires Arno Dunkerque (fr) As of this week, Damen Shipyards Group is the new owner of French shiprepair yard Arno Dunkerque, the only operator for ship repair and conversion in the 3rd largest French port, Dunkirk. The yard will continue its ship repair and conversion services. Furthermore, its personnel and management will remain in place, guaranteeing a seamless transition of the yard into the Damen Shipyards Group, which currently consists of more than 45 shipyards, repair & conversion yards and related companies. Christine Cabau Woehrel, CEO of Dunkirk Port Authority: “We are extremely happy that a deal was achieved with Damen Shipyards Group, a company providing a worldwide network and a strong expertise in this industry, which will reinforce the position of ship repair activities in the Port of Dunkirk and will give it international coverage.
specialist subcontractors, is another reason. I would like to thank the port authorities and other stakeholders for their cooperative approach. The process leading up to today’s official signing ceremony was one in which the relevant parties showed mutual understanding of each other’s interests.”
A comprehensive and continuous dialogue between the different parties involved all along the process of the takeover has led to a very positive issue ensuring employment guarantee, together with strong prospects for a growing economic activity in the Dunkirk port area and the Nord Pas de Calais Region. We are all very satisfied of this positive outcome.”
According to Damen Shipyards, this acquisition fits perfectly in its long-term strategy of expanding its
repair and conversion services. It is similar to the acquisition of Damen Shiprepair Brest (formerly Sobrena), which equally fitted in this strategy and, like Arno, not only included the yard, but also the entire staff. Arno Dunkerque is a long-term investment, integrally tied-in with Damen’s other repair activities. Daniel Dembski and Willy Salamon from Arno Dunkerque declare: “The acquisition of our company by Damen is considered a positive step for the future of our yard and personnel, opening wider perspectives for the shiprepair and conversion market. We thank all those who took part in making this development possible on national and local levels, and also, last but not least, our staff, personnel and suppliers who made the necessary efforts during the past difficult period to keep the yard fully operational and active”.
René Berkvens, CEO Damen Shipyards, says: “Arno brings added value to Damen as it is a modern shipyard with about 160 highly skilled workers. The presence of a significant industrial environment, consisting of nearby

training in hydrocarbon exploration to the industry. Leading global energy services company Senergy has underpinned its commitment to investing in people and the future of the industry after entering into an innovative agreement with the University of Aberdeen.
The centre was established in 2010 to provide a unique exploration training environment that will prepare exploration geoscientists for the challenge of discovering the earth’s remaining hydrocarbon resources.
Both parties have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) agreeing to cooperate in supporting the further development of the University’s dedicated exploHUB training centre to deliver outstanding
Director of exploHUB, Dr Stuart Archer, said: “exploHUB is delighted to enter into a strategic partnership with Senergy. Our organisations are strongly aligned as we both recognise the importance of training the
next generation of hydrocarbon explorationists to continue to meet the world’s future energy demands. “We are looking forward to working with a well-respected service company such as Senergy. This industry and academia collaboration builds on the strong industrial relationships that exploHUB has fostered since our start-up and provides further endorsement of the exploHUB MSc in Hydrocarbon Exploration as the Professional Geoscience qualification.” Aberdeen-headquartered Senergy delivers world-class technical solutions, addressing challenges from large-scale integrated developments to smaller, standalone projects. The company’s Energy Services division has end to end expertise in hydrocarbon development from exploration,
through appraisal, site survey, drilling, facilities engineering, field development planning, commercial services and enhanced recovery to field abandonment. Iain Morrison, VP Technical Excellence and Knowledge Management at Senergy, said: “The continuous training of outstanding exploration geoscientists is essential to the future of our industry. Senergy and exploHUB are both committed to Technical Excellence and we are delighted to sign this agreement which will allow us to cooperate in a number of projects initially. We expect to cooperate in additional areas in future. “In the current environment, where there is fierce competition to attract and retain key people, this serves to remind us that the only way to sustain our industry is to
invest in the training of new people and skills to ensure its long-term future prosperity.” The main areas of cooperation between Senergy and exploHUB will be marketing and promotion of exploHUB; cooperation at industry events; sourcing of trainees for exploHUB; and the training of Senergy staff as part of an integrated staff development programme. Senergy and the University of Aberdeen have already begun working together by exhibiting in London this week at the PETEX conference and exhibition in London which focuses on the latest global activity in exploration, field development, technology, unconventionals and carbon management. The event, which runs from November 20 to 22, includes a graduate career fair and a university forum.

Jumbo main installation contractor for EnQuest Producer Jumbo has been awarded a FPSO mooring, installation and hook-up contract by EnQuest. EnQuest is redeveloping the Ardmore and Duncan fields as Alma and Galia respectively. The project scope is the mooring spread installation and FPSO tow out and hook up. This will be the first offshore project in which Jumbo acts as the main contractor instead of being the subcontractor. Alma and Galia fields EnQuest is redeveloping the Alma and Galia fields, located in Blocks 30/24, 30/25 and 30/29, 310km south-east of Aberdeen in the UK North Sea. The fields will be brought on stream in 2013 using the Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel ‘EnQuest Producer’, formerly known as the ‘Uisge Gorm’. This FPSO is currently under refurbishment at a repair yard in Hamburg, Germany.
Efficient mooring installation Jumbo’s Heavy Lift Vessel Fairplayer will install the mooring spread for the ‘EnQuest Producer’ in the middle of 2013. Utilizing the enormous hold and the onboard 900t mast cranes Jumbo’s Fairplayer takes all equipment on board, transits to site and installs all equipment in one go. To ensure station keeping, the Fairplayer’s Dynamic Positioning System (DP2) will be used during installation activities. The complete EnQuest project scope:
1. Storage of the chains and wires 2. Mooring leg installation • Fabrication of the anchor piles • Preparation, mobilisation of HLV Fairplayer, transit to field • Installation of the anchor piles (9 pieces length 32-40m, diameter 84 inch, 72.5-84.5t) • Installation of the bottom chains (9 x 130m, 142mm, 58t each) • Installation of the mooring wires (spiral strand, 9 x 1150m, 94t each) • Installation of the top chain (9 x 715m, 142mm, 316t each) • Test loading of the anchor and bottom chain • Demobilisation of HLV Fairplayer
3. FPSO tow out and hook-up • FPSO tow preparations • Tow from Hamburg yard to the field • Field approach and station keeping • Connecting of mooring legs • Final tensioning of the mooring legs
Main installation contractor During the past decade Jumbo’s offshore division has built up a solid and reliable reputation as a combined transport and subsea installation company in the offshore industry. For the EnQuest project Jumbo will act as the main contractor, a well considered step in the development of Jumbo’s Offshore division. Jumbo’s Director Offshore & Operations, Mr Van Eerten: ‘We have the required skills and knowledge to successfully complete this project. We appreciate the confidence shown by EnQuest in awarding us this contract.’
Jumbo awarded the FPSO tow-out and hook-up scope to experienced and reliable contractor Boskalis Offshore - Marine Contracting (formerly SMIT Marine Projects). Boskalis Offshore Business Unit Manager, Mr. Vogelaar: ‘We are pleased with the confidence both EnQuest and Jumbo are having in our capabilities to assist Jumbo in this interesting project and look forward to a safe and reliable execution.’ With the contract in hand, Jumbo is presently conducting engineering and preparation works. The pile fabrication order has been placed.
EnQuest EnQuest is the largest UK independent producer in the UK North Sea. EnQuest PLC trades on both the London Stock Exchange and the NASDAQ OMX Stockholm. It is a constituent of the FTSE 250 index. Its assets include the Thistle, Deveron, Heather, Broom, West Don, Don Southwest and Conrie producing fields and the Alma and Galia development. At the end of June 2012, EnQuest had interests in 29 production licences covering 36 blocks or part blocks in the UKCS, of which 22 licences are operated by EnQuest. EnQuest believes that the UKCS represents a significant hydrocarbon basin in a low risk region, which continues to benefit from an extensive installed infrastructure base and skilled labour. EnQuest believes that its assets offer material organic growth opportunities, driven by exploitation of current infrastructure on the UKCS and the development of low risk near field opportunities.
Jumbo Offshore Jumbo Offshore has access to 12 Heavy Lift Vessels, two of which are DP2-class: Jumbo Javelin and Fairplayer. DP2-vessels can be used for subsea installation work, including the installation of subsea structures and mooring systems for floating production systems. Jumbo also acts as a contractor in the renewable energy industry, e.g. offshore wind farm equipment and tidal turbines. Fairplayer’s 900 t mast cranes are able to lift large and heavy structures from deck and lower them to the seabed without the need for subsea transfer. Typical weight and depth ranges are: 1,000t @ 1,000m, 600t @ 1,700m and 200t @ 3,000m.

Offshore Get-Together in Flushing Port Holland Offshore’s newbuild Dutch Blue arrived in Flushing, the Netherlands, towing the pontoon NP 328 which transported 6 hulls owned by Ruyven. Dutch Blue This trip has been the maiden voyage of the Dutch Blue; a towing / support vessel built under Dutch flag regulations and owned by Holland Offshore, part of the Holland Shipyards Group. The vessel has a length of 52,8 m, a width of 13,2 m, a bollard pull well over 50 tons and is propelled by means of two Wärtsillä 8L20 main engines, which deliver a combined 4300 hp capacity. The vessel has a complement of 37 persons. The Dutch Blue departed from Shanghai the end of July with the pontoon NP328. After taking in fuel and performing small repairs in Singapore, with the barge moored in Batam, the trip continued to Mauritius and around the Cape towards Tema, Ghana. In Ghana the vessel took in fuel and supplies. Also the Dutch Blue was presented to the local market. Holland Shipyards has recently opened a sales branch in the country, and the Dutch Blue could be a perfect fit for the young offshore market that is still taking off. After this stop, the journey was continued to Holland, where she arrived on the 12th of December.
Ruyven On the Pontoon NP 328, measuring 95 x 36,5 x 6,5 m, three inland push barges of 87,5 x 11,45 m and three 76,5 x 11,45 m barges are seafastened. All six barges are owned by Ruijven a shipbroker located in Werkendam, the Netherlands. After unloading, the barges will be taken on a slipway for inspection and repairs.
Conquest MB I Crane barge Conquest MB I is owned by Conquest Offshore, a Dutch Joint Venture between Concordia Offshore and Zwagerman Offshore Services. The Crane barge is built for offshore transport services, decommissioning of offshore platforms, renovation and installation, and installation
activities for, for example, the offshore wind industry. Both organizations already have a successful track record in the maritime and offshore industry. On deck of the 136 36 m pontoon, the Spacelift MC 35000 DLS is installed. This crane is unique with a lifting capacity of 1,500 tons and stands for a new era in the offshore industry. The Spacelift MC 35000 DLS is a “Mobile Offshore Crane” which means that the Heavylift Crane is mounted on a pedestal with a Self-supporting foundation, which can be installed on deck of a pontoon or vessel. So far, this is the first Heavylift Offshore Crane built after this philosophy.
meters, the lifting capacity of the crane can extend to 21,000 tm. 1,080 tons with a radius of 20,5 meters. The crane capacity is ideal for the installation of offshore wind foundations, decommissioning and salvaging of shipwrecks. The double hoist can be replaced by a 97 m or even 124 meter long single hoist. The Concquest MB I is equipped with a precise and automated antiheeling system, which stabilizes the pontoon by pumping water around to the various ballast tanks. Additional to the space and weight taken by the crane, the Conquest MB I has a free deck space of 3668 m2 for a load of 9,000 tons.
The Dynamic Load System (DLS) improves the dynamic capacity of the crane. Four cylinders are installed on the aft-side of the crane on the 18 m diameter ring. These cylinders pull when the crane is being loaded and push when the crane is not active, to compensate for the counterweights. The DLS capacity is 1,000 tons and the counterweight 450 tons. Together with the structure of the crane , this generates sufficient capacity for a load of 1,500 tons. With the universal basis and the heavy double hoist of 63 til 75

MAINTENANCE ENGINEERING | RELIABILITY ENGINEERING | MAINTENANCE METHODS ENGINEERING “Let the compass of Vector Maintenance Management B.V. be your guide”
