Award of Nobelwind contract On Tuesday 15th September 2015, Jan De Nul Group and the offshore wind project Nobelwind signed the first offshore wind contract for Jan De Nul’s recently acquired offshore jack-up heavy lift vessel Vidar. It concerns the engineering, procurement, construction and installation of 51 monopile foundations for 50 wind turbines and for the Offshore High Voltage Substation (OHVS), the supply and installation of scour protection and the installation of 50 wind turbine generators. The wind power plant will be constructed next to the Belwind wind power plant, around the Bligh Bank sand bank in the Belgian North Sea and has selected Ostend (Belgium) as Marshalling Harbour. The new Belgian offshore wind power plant Nobelwind will be installed 46 km off the coast at Zeebrugge. It will consist of 50 Vestas wind turbines of 3.3 MW each, 165 MW in total. The power plant will be connected to the Belgian

power grid through an export cable previously installed by Jan De Nul in 2013 and will provide green power to 197,000 families.

“Jan De Nul Group will execute the design, fabrication and installation of the 50 wind energy generators, inclusive foundation for the OHVS,” says Peter De Pooter, Manager Offshore Wind at Jan De Nul Group. “The steel foundations will be fabricated in Germany and Vietnam under strict quality control by our specialist inspectors. The newly acquired Vidar will install the 51 foundations working from the marshalling harbour in Ostend and the fall pipe vessel Simon Stevin will place scour protection on the sea bed around the piles.

Finally the Vidar will transport the turbines and blades from Denmark to install them up to 100 m high onto the foundations.” The works will start in April 2016 and end in the course of 2017.

“Nobelwind is pleased that a strong group as Jan De Nul has won the very competitive tender and has confidence that Jan De Nul will safeguard some essential parts of the construction phase,” says Frank Coenen, project director of Nobelwind. First contract for the recently acquired jack-up heavy lift vessel VidarClients worldwide are increasingly seeking an all-in solution for their projects with an integrated approach of design and execution.

Jan De Nul Group recognises this trend and offers clients complete packages. The group was already

well equipped for the installation of cables and Gravity Based Foundations, as well as for the installation of scour protection and other seabed preparation services. For the design and fabrication of the various components, Jan De Nul has its own in-house design and engineering and quality control departments.

The investment in a jack-up installation vessel like the Vidar is a logical step forward thanks to which Jan De Nul Group can now offer a unique all-in solution to the offshore market. “And with the order for the Nobelwind project we immediately confirm our expertise in this field,” adds Peter De Pooter. Although specifically built with the offshore wind industry in mind, the Vidar is also suitable to install other offshore facilities such as tidal current turbines, wave energy generators, met masts and Oil & Gas infrastructure. And since all infrastructures, especially exposed to offshore conditions, have a limited life cycle decommissioning is also a service for which Vidar can assist our worldwide clients.

Newbuildings Besides this new acquisition, Jan De Nul Group currently builds three specialized multipurpose vessels for its offshore activities. The multipurpose cable laying and rock installation vessel Isaac Newton was launched in March 2015 and will start executing its maiden project by the end of this year. The other two multipurpose vessels will also be used for the installation of rock and cables on the sea bed and are currently under construction.

Towmar Baltic UAB renews tug fleet with two ASD Tugs 2810 Towage operator Towmar Baltic UAB recently renewed its fleet with two new Damen ASD Tugs 2810. The ship assistance and marine service company provides services to customers calling at the Port of Klaipeda (Lithuania) and the Port of Liepaja (Latvia) in the Baltic Sea region. TAK 10 and TAK 11 will operate in both ports.

Managing Director of Towmar Baltic, Tomas Zabulionis, explains why the company chose Damen: “We have had a lot of experience with Damen tugs over the years.

The most important reason Towmar Baltic ordered these tugs, is reliable performance.

Our decision to contract Damen had to do with competitive pricing as well. And, of course, the company’s reputation, quality service and maintenance are other factors that played a major role in our decision. We’re delighted we chose Damen for our tug fleet renewal.”

Towmar Baltic’s shareholders are German shipping companies located in Hamburg: Petersen & Alpers GmbH & Co. KG and Neue Schleppdampfschiffsreederei Louis Meyer GmbH & Co. KG. The company has both charter and purchase experience with Damen.

Towmar Baltic and SMIT had a joint venture named Towmar SMIT Baltic years ago, and during this period three Damen tugs were part of its fleet; two ASD Tugs 2810 and one ASD Tug 3111.

Shareholder Petersen & Alpers owns two Damen tugs. The ASD Tug 2411 (Peter) was ordered 7

years ago and the ASD Tug 2913 (Michel) was delivered in 2015.

Towmar Baltic chose standardised options to modify these offthe-shelf tugs: a top firefighting system and a modern oil fired heating system, as well as an escort notation. The Damen ASD 2810, 28.67 metres long with a beam of 10.43 metres, has a bollard pull of 60.2 tonnes and can travel at speeds of up to 13.4 knots. She has excellent seakeeping behaviour and agile manoeuvrability. The latest hull and skeg designs are incorporated in this vessel as well as the most recent developments in fender, fairlead and winch design. The tug is also heavily built and comes equipped with rigid foundations, extra plate thickness, extra brackets and extra fendering.

Wei-Li crane ship leaves Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque On Friday 11 September, the Wei-Li crane ship slipped her lines at Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque to make the short trip up to Rotterdam after 10 days of maintenance and repairs. The 141-metre, 18,330 DWT crane ship required special dock bed arrangements, not least because of the 3,000 tonne crane mounted on her stern and her unconventional hull form.

A total of 225 blocks were required, along with an additional 56 steel pillars of up to 7 metres in length to support the stern.

Wooden wedges also had to be added to the lateral blocks to take account of the unusual hull shape and to ensure complete stability in the drydock. The scope of work over the 10 day period included, along with the standard work for class survey, blasting and painting the hull and the overhauling of the internal and overboard valves.

The scope of the electrical works was extensive given the tight time frame, with a large number of motors removed and transported back to workshop for overhaul before being returned and refitted.

The last ones were fitted and tested on the same day of the vessel’s departure. The starboard propeller blades were also rebuilt. This required re-welding tips onto each of the blades followed by a full polish for both propellers. Six generator coolers were also removed for overhauling, as were their bearings, and some major repairs were made to the accommodation.

Cooperation with the project team from owner Shanghai Salvage was excellent; thanks in part to the assistance of a local Chinese na-

tional attending a nearby university who helped smooth the language differences. “Ensuring that the Wei-Li was properly supported in the drydock was a complex project in itself,” commented Khalil Benjelloul, head of marketing and sales at Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque. “With all the blocks and

pillars, plus the positions of the vessel’s thrusters, it was not easy to position her in the centre line of the dock. Once accomplished, however, the work proceeded smoothly and after 10 days of hard work around the clock she was on her way again. It was a pleasure to work with Shanghai Salvage and its representatives.” The Wei-Li was built by Zhenhua Heavy Industries in 2010 and this summer was involved in the installation of the 11,000 tonne jacket for the Ivar Aasen project in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea.

Frames successfully completed PWT package for the Kraken FPSO Compact Produced Water Treatment package for Bumi Armada Woerden, The Netherlands, October 5th, 2015 - Frames successfully completed the manufacturing of the Produced Water Treatment package (PWT) for the Bumi Armada Kraken FPSO project. The Produced Water Treatment system is designed to process 460,000 barrels of reservoir water with heavy oil and solids per day. It consists of a total of 4 skids, including cyclonic desanding and sand-cleaning, with a total weight of 420 metric tons.

In June 2014, Frames was awarded the design and supply of the package. In September 2015 the skids were transported to the Bumi Armada’s fabrication yard in Singapore. At this yard the skids will be integrated into the modules of the FPSO. From there, the FPSO will sail away to EnQuests’ Kraken oil field, located in the North Sea East Shetland Basin.

In addition to the Produced Water Treatment skids, several other process packages were awarded to Frames, such as the Slop Water Treatment, Electrostatic Coalescers, and Heat Exchangers.

Optimization to reduce costs This project clearly shows Frames’ added value as a solution provider. As Jeroen Bergman,

Product Manager at Frames Separation Technologies, stated: “Especially in challenging times, when the oil price is low, it’s important that contractors can trust on their solution providers to optimize their package to reduce costs. With our broad portfolio combined with our process knowhow we were able to integrate the PWT packages for the Kraken FPSO and therewith build smaller, lighter, and faster.”

Frames has been able to reduce the plot space of the PWT package considerably by integration of two skids into one module. Furthermore, Frames has substituted their alternative process design for sand removal by utilizing desanding cyclones. This has led to high performance, compact and cost-efficient package.

Early involvement proved to be successful According to Bergman, the key to success for this project was the early involvement for Frames during the FEED-phase to design a PWT system suitable for the application with a limited footprint.

“The low difference in density of 74 kg/m3 between the oil and water phase as well as the presence of fine particles in the produced water was a unique case for our process engineers,” says Bergman. “Additionally, our mechanical department was breaking their heads over further plot space reduction, to fit all the equipment on the vessel. Mutual efforts of the Frames and Bumi Armada Engineering Team finally led to a great solution.”

This is the second milestone for Frames in cooperation with EnQuest. In 2013, Frames delivered a Crude Separation Module for the EnQuest Knightsbridge Proj-

ect in the North Sea, United Kingdom. Bumi Armada has known Frames as a reliable partner for the earlier Apache Balnaves Project and recognized the Frames strength for North Sea projects with related PED requirements.

Kraken FPSO and oil field The Bumi Armada FPSO for the Kraken oil field will process and store crude oil before offloading it to a shuttle tanker. It has a storage capacity of 600,000 barrels of crude oil. The vessel is a converted tanker upgraded to achieve a design life of 25 years.

The Kraken Oil Field was discovered in 1985 and is one of the biggest subsea heavy-oil field projects that is under development in the UK sector of the North Sea, about 350 km north east of Aberdeen. The field has more than 137 million barrels of heavy oil as reserves and it has a production volume of 50,000 barrels of oil per day. The operator of

the field is EnQuest and they are expecting the first oil in 2017.

The Produced Water Treatment system will be operated to remove heavy oil and sand from the produced water to process a water quality suitable for reinjection. Part of the water will be used to drive hydraulic submersible pumps (HSPs) for the artificial lift of the heavy oil. Reliability and performance of the Produced Water Treatment package is, therefore, essential to produce the oil.

DNV GL awarded contract to support Shah Deniz Stage 2 project DNV GL has been awarded a contract for the provision of Marine Warranty, Operations And Consultancy Services for the Shah Deniz 2 project operated by BP Exploration (Shah Deniz) Limited.

DNV GL will support the operator in assuring the project equipment transportation and installations are conducted to recognized guidelines, standards and internal requirements.

Shah Deniz Stage 2, or Full Field Development (FFD) one of the largest gas developments in the world, will help increase European energy security by bringing Caspian gas resources to markets in Europe for the very first time. The project will add a further 16 billion

cubic meters per year (bcma) of gas production to the approximately 9 bcma produced by Shah Deniz Stage 1.

James Dingwall, DNV GL Project Manager, said: “The project requires a strong emphasis on the delivery of quality project management that is focused to support the operator in the safe delivery of this tight schedule project. We have developed comprehensive processes, systems and procedures that provide the

foundation for us to deliver on project commitments, ultimately demonstrating capability, competence and continuity whilst developing client trust.”

Charles Henderson, DNV GL’s Marine Warranty Services (MWS) Team Leader, who will shortly be starting his rotation in Baku added: “We were delighted to be advised of our success in the award of this project. The drive to ensure the project is conducted safely and efficiently is paramount, and DNV GL will be proactively supporting BP’s safety culture and ensuring the risks associated with “temporary works” and marine operations are adequately mitigated. Our MWS are supported by the in-depth knowledge of our practitioners and the delivery of this project will draw upon the support of personnel within the Group’s Marine, Engineering, Dynamic Positioning, Metocean and Geotechnical teams.”

A key area of focus for DNV GL has been the development and training of local personnel to maintain skills and support longterm cost reduction and sustainability for the local industry and community.

Mammoet works closely with SBM Offshore - SUT to launch illustrated children’s book to ignite interest in underwater sector career opportunitiesThe Society for Underwater Technology (SUT) is getting set to launch a fun, informative, illustrated book for 10 – 14 year olds aimed at growing interest in the wonders of underwater technology.

The book titled, Can a Lobster be an Archaeologist – Quirky Questions and Fascinating Facts about the Underwater World, will be launched in November with many past and present SUT members contributing to the content.

From exploring lost treasure to sea monsters, ocean rubbish and how to build your own ROV, the book is

packed with factual and fun stories brought to life by quirky illustrations by artist Rachel Hathaway.

Pre-orders of the book, which will retail at £12.99, are being taken at the Offshore Europe Conference and Exhibition in Aberdeen this week which has the theme of Supporting the Next Generation.

Emily Boddy, Publications Officer at SUT explained: “We want to bring to life the excitement of the underwater world to encourage young people to get interested in the sector. A group of 10 – 14 year olds has peer reviewed the content and given insightful feedback, but we think adults will also be interested in reading about the mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle, giant whirlpools and underwater robots.”The book has been funded by the SUT, which is a not-forprofit organisation and all proceeds will go towards its agenda of supporting educational development and facilitating learning and networking opportunities. The title of the book originates from a story about an 8,000 year old settlement near the Isle of Wight, rediscovered by a lobster digging to create a burrow which was then found by divers. to complete FPSO module installation at the Brasa Shipyard in Brazil Module integration process optimized on small quayside for the FPSO Cidade de Maricá Mammoet, the world’s largest service provider specializing in engineered heavy lifting and transport, has successfully completed a module weighing and transport project in Brasa Shipyard, Brazil.

In July 2015, SBM Offshore awarded Mammoet Brazil a contract for the weighing and transport of construction modules for the floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels Cidade de Maricá & Cidade de Saquarema, both located at Brasa Shipyard (Niteroi - Rio de Janeiro).

The operation for the FPSO Cidade de Maricá is now complete.

In total Mammoet safely and securely executed 12 transports and 6 weighing procedures using 68 axel lines of self-propelled modular transports to move modules

weighing up to 1,580 metric tons.

Mammoet worked closely with SBM Offshore to ensure the operation was smoothly executed within the confines of a small quayside. Detailed preparation and precise maneuvering of the modules was essential to ensure the client could keep to their lifting schedule. The modules could only be lifted by project’s floating crane (Pelicano) on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Due to these restrictions it was necessary to carefully plan the placement of the modules to en-

sure maximum productivity on the quayside, ensuring the available time and space were used most efficiently to maximize the floating crane’s availability.

Hugo Bericote, project manager, explained “From the very start Mammoet’s engineering department worked hand in hand with SBM Offshore to deliver the solutions needed to ensure that the activities, equipment and time would be optimized. This undoubtedly contributed to the success of the project. We have now successfully completed the transport, weighing and integration of the modules for FPSO Cidade de Maricá and we look forward to doing the same for FPSO Cidade de Saquarema.”

ACE Winches support pilot engineering course for Turriff pupils Global deck machinery specialist, ACE Winches in partnership with Turriff Academy, ITCA Training and Aberdeenshire Council have launched a pilot engineering course for Turriff Academy pupils this month The senior phase course aims to meet the development needs of Scotland’s Young Workforce, a framework led by Sir Ian Wood supporting organisations looking to recruit, retain and develop young people and backs ACE Winches’ wider youth development CSR strategy.

Tata Steel awarded multimillion pound contract on Maersk Culzean project Tata Steel has been awarded a multi-million pound contract for the Maersk Culzean project located in the UK central North Sea – one of the largest discoveries in the region in the last 10 years.

The company will be responsible for providing more than 18 thousand tonnes of carbon steel welded line pipe with the core element of the scope of supply encompassing a 22” (53km) gas export pipeline which will tie into the existing Central Area Transmission System (CATS).

The gas export line will be manufactured at Tata Steel’s UOE LSAW pipe mill located in Hartlepool, UK

To enhance support to existing clients and secure new contracts in South East Asia, ACE Winches has appointed Indonesian company Abumas in Jakarta as its local representative and agent.

Rising demand for conceptual engineering services as M&A activity climbs ADIL, the leading independent energy consultancy, has recorded a 100% increase in demand for its Accelerated Conceptual Engineering (ACE) services as acquisition, merger and divestment activity by UKCS operators ramps up in the lower oil price environment.

The Aberdeen and London-based organisation, which works with exploration and production companies around the world to progress projects to sanction and final delivery, has doubled the amount of early stage evaluation work year on year and delivered campaigns totalling in excess of £1.5million since the start of the year.ADIL has always provided its ACE services to companies seeking to optimise the development of a new discovery but increasingly these services are being used by companies looking to acquire existing discoveries or farm-in to exploration prospects.

Tocardo and Huisman install Tidal Power Plant in Dutch Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier Tocardo Tidal Turbines, designer and producer of tidal and free-flow water turbines and Huisman, designer, builder and financial sponsor of the turbine’s suspension structure have installed five tidal turbines in the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier (Oosterschelde barrier) to generate clean energy. This installation is the largest tidal energy project in the Netherlands as well as the world’s largest commercial tidal installation of five turbines in an array.

The Tidal Power Plant is engineered and produced in a record time of nine months. The 50 meter long and 20 meter wide structure was transported over water to the work island “Neeltje Jans”. Taking into account the water levels, the tides and the weather and using the slides of the storm surge barrier, the tidal power plant was placed on a floating pontoon combined with lifters and installed between the pillars under the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier. With an installation window of just two hours and with a highly precise

operation, the tidal power plant is successfully installed. The Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier is the largest of the world-renowned Delta Works series of dams and storm surge barriers, designed to protect the Netherlands from flooding from the North Sea. The location will now be a combination of water defences and hydroelectric power.

“This project marks an important step in the development of tidal energy. Tidal technology is innovative and could grow into a significant Dutch export product. The export expectation of tidal energy

is more than 200 Gigawatt. With our turbines in the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier, we can now show the world what tidal energy is all about: providing a clean and reliable source of energy that could fulfil 10-20% of the world’s electricity needs,” says Tocardo CEO Hans van Breugel.

According to Huisman’s CTO Joop Roodenburg the advantages of tidal energy are evident. “Besides the fact that it is extremely predictable how much energy is generated – the tide is there every day – the turbines are installed in the water and will not be in sight such as wind turbines. For the future we focus on upscaling the installations. However, this requires a large investment, a realistic rate for tidal energy and a touch of idealism. Only then we can build

an important export industry.

“Huisman has been willing to take this risk and supports the project financially, because they believe in the future of tidal energy and great Dutch export opportunities.

A home market as the Eastern Scheldt project is essential in this matter. Besides Tocardo and Huisman, many other Dutch companies are involved in this prestigious project. Strukton has been actively involved in the project planning and is fully responsible for project management during installation.

Mammoet’s involvement in the project comprises the transportation and installation of the Tidal Power Plant at the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier. The Zeeland companies Istimewa Elektrotechniek, Van der Straaten and Hillebrand also play an important role in terms of the electro-technical installation and steel structures.

As manager of the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier, the Netherlands’ Department of Waterways and Public Works Rijkswaterstaat supports this innovative initiative to generate energy. Together with contractors, engineering firms and

knowledge institutes, Rijkswaterstaat develops innovative solutions and whenever possible facilitates initiatives to test or build renewable energy installations.

The province of Zeeland has provided a significant financial contribution to the project.

Provincial representative Ben de Reu explains why: “Zeeland is surrounded by water. We are the only province with land in the sea, which is why tidal energy is such a good match for us. Therefore tidal energy fits so well with our province. In recent years we have built up much expertise in this area.

We are a pioneer and now we can show that the water is an important energy source for Zeeland.

Tidal energy is the future, of that I am convinced! “ This project has also received funding from the European Regional Development Fund, the Dutch government and the province of Zeeland as part of the Operational Programme for Zuid-Nederland (OP-Zuid).

Damen transporting 22 vessels from Asia to Rotterdam on BigLift’s Happy Star Damen’s largest ever stock-vessel transport began in Shanghai The Damen Shipyards Group is shipping a total of 22 vessels from several Damen shipyards aboard the heavy-lift vessel Happy Star.

This is Damen’s largest transportation of stock vessels to date. Upon arrival in Europe later this month, the completed vessels will be ready for immediate sale and can swiftly be put into operation.

Damen has already sold a number of the vessels being transported. Amongst these are two Fast Crew Suppliers (FCS) 2610 to be used at North Sea offshore wind parks. The transport is a welcome

opportunity to accommodate the requirements of clients on the west coasts of Africa and Europe looking for smaller tugs and pontoons. By having a global spread of strategic stock available, Damen

always ensures short delivery times of popular vessels.

The scope of the transport was derived with a close eye on the needs of clients in Scandinavia, Western Europe and Africa.

Rimmert Berlijn, Damen Service Coordinator Heavy Lift, explains: “We took a lot of time to carefully consider what vessel types we would transport, and in what numbers, in order to best serve the requirements of a wide range of clients.” Following the initial loudout and embarkation from Shanghai, the transport made calls at the Vietnamese ports of Hai Phong and Da Nang and at Singapore to collect additional vessels. Included in the transport are Damen ASD Tugs 2310, 2411 and 3212, Stan Tugs 1606, 1004 and 1907, Stan Pontoons 5213 and 3011 and the above mentioned FCS 2610 vessels. As a result of this large-scale, multiple vessel transport, clients active in various industries such as fish farming, heavy lifting, contracting work, harbour assistance and dredging will benefit from reduced shipping costs.

The Damen stock-vessels are

ready for operation, though they can still be outfitted with client specific options. Upon arrival in Europe, the vessels will receive final touch-ups and cleaning before delivery to clients or distribution to various Damen shipyards.

Damen Service Coordinator Deliveries John Slijkoord explained Damen’s selection of BigLift for the project, saying, “As soon as we got the completed scope we put it

out on the market with our requirements– BigLift met all of these.”

The heavy-lift specialist operates a fleet of fifteen vessels. Happy Star is equipped with two 900 tonne heavy-lift mast cranes, 3,280 m2 of unobstructed deck space, and a weather deck with pontoon hatch covers extending the full length of the ship.

Success for IHC Services

IHC Services has secured an order for a substantial renovation project for a vessel owned by Huta Marine Works Ltd in Saudi Arabia. Work on the HUTA 14 self-propelled cutter suction dredger (SPCSD) will be carried out by IHC Middle East based in Dubai, and the Service Operations department in The Netherlands.

The renovation involves the replacement of three large diesel engines, and the electrical installation for the underwater pump drive. Royal IHC is responsible for the engineering of the rebuild, purchase and delivery of the hardware, supervision during the installation and commissioning of the dredger after conversion.

“The vessel, built in 1986, has a total of four engines but one had already been changed by a previous owner,” says Robert Jonk, General

Manager of IHC Middle East & India. “Two dredge pump engines are already out of order and require replacements, and the third engine is about to break down. The submerged dredge pump needs to be changed, and the current parts are now obsolete.”

The renovation will bring immediate benefits to Huta Marine Works, which specialises in dredging, marine infrastructure and harbour construction. Based in Jeddah, the company has a fleet of 15 CSDs,

of which 12 were delivered by IHC. The new engines and dredge pump drive on the HUTA 14 will result in reduced downtime and enhanced efficiency.

“IHC Services was awarded the contract mainly as a result of good communication with Huta Marine Works, and effective cooperation between various departments and units within IHC,” says Robert.

“We have supported this customer on a number of other repair projects, and regularly supply spare parts.”

Now the contract is finalised, four members of staff in Dubai will be involved in the project and eight in Kinderdijk, The Netherlands.

The hardware will be delivered to

Jeddah in spring 2016, ready for installation.

IHC Services carries out approximately three renovation projects such as this per year. Following

the success of this order, Robert and his team believe there will be greater potential for further renovation and upgrading of other CSDs owned by Huta Marine Works.

XPD8 seals condition monitoring Darcy proves new sand control technology contract with CNR International withsecond successful installation XPD8 Solutions, an asset integrity management specialist, has secured a significant two-year contract with CNR International.

The agreement will see the Aberdeen-headquartered firm providing condition monitoring services to five CNR platforms in the North Sea. Having already provided cover to CNR International’s UKCS assets over the past eight years, this latest contract will take XPD8 to a decade working for the Canadian independent oil and natural gas production company.

XPD8 is recognised as a leader in maintenance engineering, condition monitoring and integrity services for the oil & gas sector.

Gordon Ellis, operations director at XPD8, said: “Over the past 12 months we have secured a great deal of international growth with contracts across West Africa and Asia Pacific. This latest award from CNR International shows that as well as expanding globally we continue to provide a valuable service in our own back yard.

“The downturn facing the oil & gas industry has made it more important than ever for operators to know their equipment is working at optimum levels. Effective condition monitoring is crucial in ensuring that production continues at the desired rate. In addition, the correct system will flag up where machinery is not running efficiently, helping to avoid breakdowns

and the costs this ensues in downtime and repairs.” Formed in 2003, XPD8 is a privately owned company which provides skilled engineers for all areas of the asset management process.

Earlier this year the company revealed it had secured a contract in Ghana with Tullow Oil to migrate its existing computerised maintenance management system (CMMS) to the Maximo software package. The system supports planning, scheduling, performance monitoring and reporting of asset integrity key performance indicators at the Jubilee floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel.

Hydraulic Screens enable more efficient completion of sand plagued wells more Sand control engineering specialist Darcy is gearing up for global interest in its downhole Hydraulic Screen at Offshore Europe, following a second successful installation of the new technology in the North Sea.

Hot on the heels of the industry-first on the mature Statfjord field for Statoil, Darcy has reported a second installation with more screens to provide a cost-efficient alternative to gravel packing.

Darcy’s system provides ‘pump free’ sand control delivering increased operational efficiency and simplifying logistics to reduce time and costs. It uses patented hydraulic technology that is easily activated from the surface to provide an alternative to gravel packing which is more time and labour intensive.

Steve Bruce, CEO of Darcy said: “With 70% of mature and deep water oil and gas wells requiring sand control and experiencing costly challenges, we believe there is a significant market for the Hydraulic Screen due to its ease of installation and ability to cope with downhole geo-mechanical

Our hydraulic system offers a more efficient alternative and enables operators to complete wells which would be difficult or impossible using traditional sand control methods.”

The mature Statfjord field faces challenges with continuous pressure depletion and reduced margins for pumping traditional open hole gravel packs. Integrating with Statoil’s completion equipment suppliers, the activation of the Hydraulic Screen took less than one hour of rig time. A reservoir isolation barrier was closed and tested prior to pulling out of the hole and completion operations concluded with production flowing.

Statoil recognised the use of Hydraulic Screen technology as the primary sand control system in a low bottom-hole pressure environment as an industry first.

The Hydraulic Screen is suited to deepwater regions, mature fields

and HPHT wells. Positive wellbore support prevents mobilisation of problematic sand, shale and coal. It provides the mechanical strength and collapse resistance for high geo-mechanical loads and extreme production conditions, whilst maintaining base pipe geometry. It also offers selective production, injection and shutoff.

The technology eliminates the need for specialist pumping crews or additional downhole tools required for gravel packing. It is easily integrated with standard completions equipment which provides logistical efficiencies on transportation and bed space. In the first Statfjord trial, only two Darcy engineers were present to install and activate the Hydraulic Screen and were down-manned within ten hours.

Based in Kintore, Aberdeenshire, Darcy launched in 2009 to develop innovative sand control systems.

The company also works with operators to develop customised hydraulic screen solutions to meet project specific sand challenges including extreme HPHT environments.

Mammoet elevates power pylon while active Mammoet, the world’s largest service provider specializing in engineered heavy lifting and transport, has successfully completed the elevation of a ‘live’ high voltage power pylon. The 380kV structure was raised on behalf of TenneT TSO for the Rijkswaterstaat (Department of Waterways and Public Works) in the Netherlands. This power pylon had to be elevated by four meters in situ, while maintaining an ongoing power supply. It was the first time this type of elevation has ever been carried out. As main contractor, Mammoet was responsible for the complete project. This comprised the civil works, the fabrication of the elevating piece, the complete engineering package, the reinforcement of the power pylon and the elevating of the power pylon.

Mammoet used their state of the art equipment and extensive knowledge of lifting complex constructions to ensure that the elevation was executed with high precision. Using the JS500 jacking

system, Mammoet raised the pylon with a margin of just five millimeters between each leg of the pylon at all times, securing the structural integrity of the construction. Four JS500 jacking system towers were used, at each corner of the

structure, to elevate the 35-ton power pylon, ensuring a very precise jacking maneuver. The system was operated remotely, making it possible to maintain the power supply while executing the work at a safe distance. Use of the JS500 system enabled the live elevation, thus avoiding the need to construct a costly emergency power bypass.

This elevation of “Mast058” in the Noordwaard polder is part of the Rijkswaterstaat’s project “Make room for the river”.

The area where the power pylon is located will be subject to de-polderisation in order to make room for the “Nieuwe Merwede” river. Dikes will be partly excavated at the river side and the dike

ring will be reduced to increase the flow of water in the area. This is necessary to create a better flow of water through the town of Gorinchem, where rapidly rising water levels can occur during extreme weather events. This will significantly reduce the chance of flooding in the area. As a result of the de-polderisation of the Noordwaard polder the area will be flooded occasionally, making it necessary to elevate the pylon by four meters.

Leading subsea training centre unveils new collaborative training model A new model for increasing workforce competency in the ROV industry, using a realistic offshore instruction environment, has been unveiled by The Underwater Centre at the Subsea UK ROV conference in Aberdeen.

Industry and training providers have collaborated to develop work class ROV operations training that gives personnel thorough preparation and experience in essential aspects of work class ROV practice, offering the building blocks to improve safety and efficiency of staff and agency personnel. Steve Ham, Commercial Director of The Underwater Centre, told the conference that the aim of the industry-led solution is to address the looming skills and personnel shortage by offering both basic and advanced training to a greater number of workers, consequently shortening the time to reach senior roles.

The new model has seen The Underwater Centre set up and deliver the training, with significant input from industry. It represents a complete change in the approach to training and consequently the opportunities open to personnel development within the industry in the future.

Earlier this week, the Chief Executive of the Oil and Gas Authority (OGA), Andy Samuel called on the sector to continue investing in the next generation of talent or risk a ‘crippling skills gap’ in the wake of the global drop in the oil price.

The Underwater Centre has received increasing support from the subsea industry and a number of companies - including Technip, Subsea 7, Fugro, Forum Subsea Technologies, FMC Schilling Robotics, Lawson Engineers Ltd, Digital Edge Subsea, Kongsberg and, more recently, Valeport – have been instrumental in developing the training syllabus, as well as donating much needed equipment.

Steve said: “The new contextual training we are offering in conjunction with industry signifies a paradigm shift in the way we deliver our courses, and includes theoretical and practical instruction on board our work class ROV support vessel – Loch Sunart - in a realistic marine environment.

“Just this week, Andy Samuel highlighted the need for companies to continue to invest in training and developing people,

and this is just what we are doing in collaboration with the industry.

The oil and gas industry is cyclical and we have seen this happen a number of times before – without the necessary investment now in training, there will be a large skills gap in the future.

“The new programme has been developed with a modular approach, covering topics such as ROV maintenance and operations, tooling, electrical and electronic systems, high voltage, working at heights, fibre optics and OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer), and hydraulics. The training is also staged to address the training needs of new entrants, as well as established and experienced personnel. This approach allows training to fit with companies’ existing competence development programmes.

“The competency and training of ROV operators will be an important factor in ensuring the continued development of the industry bringing increasingly significant operational and cost efficiencies.”

The Underwater Centre works closely with the subsea industry to help companies gain the workforce they need, and to provide new and existing personnel with the best possible preparation for a subsea career. The structured learning experience, tailored to address specific competency issues, also aims to improve the throughput of senior members of the offshore team.

Subsea companies benefit from providing this support, as it helps to increase the competency of their existing and future workforce; consequently students on all of the Centre’s training courses receive training that assists a successful career in the subsea sector.

By creating a more effective workforce, this new approach to educating personnel in work class ROV operations will contribute to ensuring a safer working environment, and save resourcing and maintenance costs, as well as ensuring the future growth of the subsea industry.

The Underwater Centre is a

purpose-built subsea training and trials facility and is based on the shore of a seawater loch, well sheltered by the surrounding mountains. The Centre’s unique location allows it to provide yearround training and testing in an open-water environment, while still being centrally located in the largest town in the Scottish Highlands.

ROV students benefit from The Underwater Centre’s unique training elements, including time on Loch Sunart - the Centre’s work class ROV support vessel, which is fitted with an operational work class ROV - providing students with invaluable first-hand experience in all areas of ROV operations and mobilisation, from launch and recovery to operating a suite of ROV navigation sensors as part of in-water practical exercises.

Xodus enters Phase 2 of pioneering research into multiphase flow International energy consultancy Xodus Group and Dutch innovation company TNO have completed the first phase of a pioneering joint industry project (JIP) into the dynamic forces which affect the integrity of piping systems, in particular through multiphase flow. The second phase of the project, which is expected to be run across three stages, is now open for new participants to join.

Eight companies were involved in the first phase of the project: BP, Statoil, Total, Suncor, Shell, Lundin, Aker Solutions and FMC. TNO carried out the bulk of the test work at their facilities in The Netherlands, while Xodus managed the programme and developed CFD schemes to be able to reproduce the measured results. Based on the outcome of analyses by both companies, new scaling rules were produced. Additionally, CD-adapco provided software (STARCCM+) and carried out simulations in support of the JIP.

Various sectors including oil, petrochemical, natural gas and steel have a requirement for heavy lifting equipment in the construction of large scale plants. The development of more efficient construction methods has led to a demand for heavy lifting and transport capacity which is able to manage ever-increasing sizes of components and loads.

Mammoet and Sankyu team up for the East Asia region Establishment of joint venture company in Singapore for heavy equipment operation Sankyu Inc. of Tokyo, Japan and Mammoet Holding B.V. of Utrecht, the Netherlands have announced the establishment of a joint venture company in Singapore for the operation of heavy equipment. The two companies signed an agreement on 21 July which creates a new company, Sankyu Mammoet Pte. Ltd., specializing in heavy lifting, transport and engineering services and equipment for the East Asian region. Both companies have an equal stake in the joint venture.

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) calculations were carried out to compare test results with a range of flow conditions.

Multiphase flow, the passage of more than one fluid, gas or chemical substance through a pipeline, can cause flow induced vibration (FIV). This is an increasing concern on subsea (and topsides) production piping systems. As data is limited in this highly technical arena, the aim of the JIP is to investigate and understand the forces induced by multiphase flow on piping systems, and generate validation data for multiphase computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to model and analyse its occurrence.

Phase 1 was valued at more than £500,000 and involved testing on a 1.5 R/D stiff bend for a range of flow conditions. The inlet pipe to the bend had three configu-

“The JIP is addressing this area of uncertainty in the industry and will provide a benchmark in order to carry out more accurate design calculations and prediction work.

This will ultimately improve piping integrity, potentially increase production, and mitigate risk in this high consequence arena.”

“The experimental results thus far have given us new insights on how to improve the mechanical integrity analyses of subsea templates,” said Erik Nennie, Project Manager – Heat Transfer and Fluid Dynamics with TNO. “The outcome of the next phases will further improve the modelling tools for integrity analysis, as both design and operation of subsea templates can greatly benefit from these studies.”

Ship efficiency moves centre stage at Europort 2015 There are now less than 50 days to go before the launch of Europort 2015 at the Ahoy Rotterdam conference and exhibition centre. This year’s event, which takes place between November 3rd and 6th, is the 37th Europort to be held in Rotterdam and has already attracted over 1100 confirmed exhibitors, including 15 country pavilions, from 40 countries.

Ship efficiency is a key Europort theme this year, with a number of features added to the 2015 programme to stimulate debate about this vital issue for ship owners and operators against the backdrop of extreme fuel price volatility.

On the 4th of November the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) will host the Energy Efficient Ships 2015 conference, one of four conferences that will take place during Europort. Exploring the recent technology advances

that enhance energy efficiency within the maritime sector, the RINA conference papers will cover: energy efficient ship design and operation; the practical aspects of energy saving devices; the integrated design of an asymmetric aftbody; and designing a propeller to maximise energy efficiency.

There will also be papers highlighting research into decreasing the wind resistance of large container vessels and how to support the energy efficient ship design process with energy flow simulation.

Other innovations this year include the Europort Masterclasses - an initiative of Europort organiser Ahoy Rotterdam - and Netherlands Maritime Technology.

The Masterclasses include one focusing specifically on ‘Leadership through efficiency’, while the morning session on November

5th addresses Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) and ways to achieve zero down time, highlighting the newest concepts in the CBM field. There will also be a Masterclass on fuel strategies, offering insight into global marine fuel trends and options for retrofitting existing vessels.

Improved vessel operating efficiency will also be a key topic on the exhibition floor, where more than 1100 companies will showcase new services and technical concepts intended to optimise the way ships operate and perform.

I attended Langley School, an independent day and boarding school in London, Norfolk UK.

1. Who are you, how old are you and where was you born?

My name is Scarlett Irma Mummery; I am 23 year old from Suffolk, United Kingdom. My father’s side of the family are Danish, hence the Danish middle name.

2. What does your home situation look like?

I was brought up by the coast in the seaside town of Lowestoft. A town built off the back of its fishing industry. A large proportion of the men in the area work offshore within the oil, gas and energy sector. I have recently purchased my first home so I have flown the nest to live by myself in my brand new apartment in Bungay.

3. What is your current position and where are you based?

Contract Offshore Geotechnical Engineer. I am signed to a freelance casual day rate contract with Benthic. I am personally based in the UK but my reporting geotechnical office at Benthic is in Singapore.

4. Which are your daily activities?

Activities vary from day to day dependent of weather I am offshore or not at the time. When I am offshore I am involved from the very beginning of this process through to the generation of datasets for the client. I assist in the preparation and servicing of the equipment we use. I process, check and present all acquired in-situ testing data, generating document deliverables for the client. I log the core samples we retrieve and bring on deck and conduct offshore laboratory testing on the samples. My job also has physical aspects. I assist in the launch and recovery of equipment on PROD (Our Portable remotely operated drill).

6. How did you wind up in the Offshore Industry?

My mother actually gave me the idea of working offshore while I was studying for my A levels and trying to decide on what degree I wanted to study at university.

She used to own a restaurant on the marine ‘Go Fish’ and one evening a young guy not from the area but working offshore and visiting came in for dinner. He told her all about his job offshore on the survey vessels and when she repeated it to me the following morning I was sold on the idea.

The idea of traveling the world and working at different sites in so many different continents and the lifestyle of working a month away and having a month off at home to spend as I wish sounded more than perfect to me. My career started during my second year of university when I secured a summer placement with Fugro Alluvial in Great Yarmouth working in their laboratory dealing with the onshore testing and logging of their core samples. This placement confirmed my desire to work offshore.

7. Tell us your dreams for the

future.

My biggest dream and ambition for the future is to have a successful career within the offshore industry. I am genuinely in love with my job and I can’t wait for the industry to pick up again. I am working really hard on my blog and I want it to continue to grow and develop and to reach as wide of an audience as possible. I am very driven and passionate about what I do and the offshore party chief/ project management route is one I will be working towards in the near future. I thoroughly enjoy working within the offshore oil, gas and energy sector and I will continue to do as so for as long as possible.

8. Who would you like to trade places with?

My idol is David Attenborough so I would have to choose him. He has had the most incredible life, traveled the world and seen some of the greatest wonders that planet earth possess. He is full of knowledge with some fantastic stories and after all memories stay with us forever.

9. Do you keep track of the news?

Yes daily, it is important to keep up with current affairs especially those which indirectly and directly affect your life. I am always looking for c ontent and relevant topics to cover within my blog.

News, hopefully good news, regarding the oil price is something everyone is most certainly keeping their eye on.
