VOS Glamour arrives in Aberdeen We are delighted to announce that one of Vroon’s newest vessels, VOS Glamour, arrived safely in Aberdeen yesterday, following her long journey from Fujian Shipbuilding Trading in Fuzhou, China.

VOS Glamour is a 60-m ERRV-FSV (emergency response and rescue vessel/field-support vessel) and the first in a series of four such FSVs being built for Vroon. The vessels feature a revolutionary, wave-piercing bow shape and a 300m2 cargo deck. The remaining three vessels

will be operational in the coming months. VOS Glamour will operate in the North Sea out of Aberdeen for Vroon Offshore Services. She is now being prepared for duties and will commence a long-term charter on 25 February. We wish her and all who sail on her safe voyages.

Acta Marine contracted CIG Shipbuilding to build Wind Farm Support Vessel Acta Marine contracted CIG Shipbuilding for the design and construction of a large Wind Farm Support Vessel. The DP-2 fitted vessel measures 108 by 16 meters and offers comfortable accommodation and workspace for 75 persons onboard.

The vessel will be equipped with two dedicated boat landings for Crew Transfer Vessels as well as a motion-compensated gangway, which allows a safe and efficient transfer of technicians and equipment between the vessel and wind turbines. CIG has optimized the design with the aim of creating a vessel with the best possible workability and comfort for operations in heavier sea state conditions, applicable for wind farms that are built further offshore. The vessel will be named “Acta Orion” and is scheduled for delivery in September 2015. The hull is currently under construction in Poland and outfitting will take place in the north of the Netherlands. Immediately

after delivery, the vessel will be chartered by contractor Van Oord, who will use Acta Orion during the construction of the Gemini Offshore

The asset is the flagship of our fleet of next generation vessels and is a clear indication of our commitment to bringing new, cost-effective subsea services to the global oil & gas operator market.”

The Ceona Amazon’s versatility sets her apart as a deepwater field development asset with the vessel being purpose built to perform in multiple pipelay and operational modes, particularly for heavy subsea structure and floater installation services. In just one trip, the vessel is capable of undertaking complex logistical projects in

remote, harsh and deepwater environments - making her ideally suited for provinces such as West Africa, the Gulf of Mexico and Brazil.

Shipbuilding specialist Lloyd Werft successfully delivered the Ceona Amazon less than two years after the letter of intent for its construction was signed. Huisman, a global leader in the design and manufacturing of heavy construction equipment for onshore and offshore operations, pre-built the cranes and multi-lay pipe VLS ready for installation on the vessel’s arrival in Schiedam.

With capacity to carry 8,500te of rigid pipe or 5,500te of flexible, or a combination of both, the Ceona Amazon will be able to lay rigid and flexible pipelines and umbilicals, and install heavy subsea structures or floaters (TLP and

Ceona finalises installation of 570te multiple pipelay VLS and twin 400te cranes on the pioneering Ceona Amazon vessel Ceona, SURF contractor with heavy subsea construction capabilities, has marked another milestone in delivering its next generation flagship asset, the Ceona Amazon, following the successful installation of 570te multiple pipelay VLS and twin 400te cranes onto the deepwater field development vessel.

One month after the vessel’s arrival at Huisman yard in the Netherlands, the Ceona Amazon has been equipped with her inclined multi-lay VLS with a top tension of 570te, and with two 400te Active Heave Compensated (AHC) masthead cranes able to work in tandem. The two 18m diameter wheels on the top tower and deck aft are also being installed.

The next weeks will see Huisman complete the electrical and hydraulic hookup, and perform the commissioning of the system.

This major step in the building programme comes less than two months after the Ceona Amazon

was officially christened in Bremerhaven, Germany, and successfully underwent sea trials ahead of schedule – underpinning the overall prompt delivery of the vessel within time and budget.

Steve Preston, Chief Executive Officer of Ceona, who initiated the design concept for Ceona’s game-changing vessel, said: “This is a particularly exciting moment for all those involved in bringing the Ceona Amazon to fruition.

The cranes and multi-lay VLS are a milestone in the installation of pioneering equipment and features that take the vessel into the next era of cost-effective deepwater subsea construction and installa-

The vessel’s innovative G-lay pipelay system, developed and patented by Ceona, features an inclinable lay spread with a top tension of 570te and a rigid pipe firing line system. It combines the offshore assembly of rigid pipe joints along a traditional firing line, then plastic bending of the pipe through a route similar to that of a reel-lay vessel, completed by a vertical exit through the moonpool (J-lay).

The Ceona Amazon will represent the second new vessel – after the Polar Onyx – that Ceona has brought to the market on time and in less than a year. The Ceona Amazon is 199.4m long and 32.2m wide, drawing 8.0m with a gross tonnage of 33,000te. She is due to enter service early 2015.

PRESS RELEASE: Interwell UK announces change in managing director Interwell UK is today announcing the departure of its managing director, Andrew Louden.

Andrew Louden joined Interwell in December 2010 to establish a UK subsidiary of Interwell AS. Over the last four years the UK business has gone from strength to strength with the team growing from an initial two employees up to its current headcount of 48.

His leadership has overseen growth in revenues from just over £1m to more than £16m. During this period the team have established a strong safety and quality focus and have achieved ISO9001, 14001 and 18001 accreditation.

Since moving into their UK base at Links Place in Aberdeen, they have achieved four years without any lost time injuries. The exceptional Interwell product portfolio has proven to be extremely popular with UK clients, providing solutions to their well intervention challenges. The UK organization now enters a new chapter with expanded geographical responsibility for West Africa operations. Andrew

has decided to pursue a new challenge and has handed the reins of responsibility to David Aitken, who has worked alongside him since the UK’s inception in January 2011. Dave joined Interwell as the UK Operations Manager, following a long and distinguished career with a major service company where he had overall responsibility for its North Sea slickline business.

Dave became the UK Country Manager at Interwell in 2014 and is well known in the Aberdeen well services community where his depth and breadth of knowledge is highly respected. In Dave’s new role as UK Managing Director he will assume responsibility for all of Interwell’s core business activities in the UK and West Africa.

Seaspovill takes delivery of second Damen Fast Ferry Seaspovill, the South Korean operator, took delivery of its second Damen Fast Ferry at a ceremony held at Damen Shipyards Singapore recently. Attending the ceremony was Chairman of Seaspovill Mr Park Jung Hak and his wife, Mrs Choi Yeon Hee, who christened the vessel Sea Star 5. Also present was Captain Park Yeong Chul of the Korean Register of Shipping.

Seaspovill approached Damen with the order for the Damen Fast Ferry 4212 as a result of the vessel’s efficient fuel consumption and excellent sailing performance. This is essential for the often-rough seas of the 80 nautical mile route on which the vessel will operate.

An additional advantage is that Damen keeps this successful model on stock, ensuring a fast delivery time. Seaspovill ordered the ferry last year and, in a short time, Damen had customised the vessel to the needs of the client in time for delivery just ahead of the tourist season, which commences in March. The DFF 4212 is a catamaran passenger ferry 42.2m in length with a beam of 11.6m. She will transport up to 450 people between Gangneung on the east coast of South Korea and the island of Ulleung-Do. The passenger capacity is distributed over the main deck, which can accommodate 306 persons, and the upper deck, which caters for 144.

Powered by her four MTU main engines (16V2000 M72), Sea Star 5 can reach considerable speeds exceeding 40 knots.

throughout the passenger spaces, all of which are air-conditioned with temperature control and on-demand air supply. The main deck features 30-inch television screens and DVD players for passenger entertainment as well as a kiosk serving refreshments.

A toilet area consists of seven toilets, including a disabled facility with wheelchair access. Sea Star 5 has a spacious cargo room for the storage of baggage and other light goods. The attention to comfort also extends to the wheelhouse, from where the vessel is operat-

Kooypunt Business Estate Kooypunt III will operate as a service hub. It is an industrial estate that focuses on companies which are not directly dependent on the port itself, but which provide services for the port-based offshore-related businesses.

Kooypunt III is part of the Kooypunt business estate. Due to its proximity to the maritime port and Den Helder Airport, Kooypunt is an excellent location for offshore-related businesses.

The development area is part of NV Port of Den Helder. This company lets, develops, coordinates and facilitates business areas in the maritime port, both on and behind the waterfront, and on business estates. In close collaboration with the Municipalities, the Royal Netherlands Navy, research institutes and education institutes, opportunities are offered for doing business, learning and working in the offshore industry. Den Helder is home to the main offshore port in the southern part of the North Sea. Together with the nearby airport, the port supports the activities of approximately 140 gas, oil and service platforms. With 23,000 flight movements each year, the

In doing this the company has demonstrated to its passengers and to the South Korean authorities that it sees safety as the highest possible priority.”

The Netherlands’ main offshore port gets the go-ahead for the construction of Kooypunt III during a well-attended port stakeholders’ meeting In presence of approximately 150 attendees, the official go-ahead for the construction of a new part of the Kooypunt industrial estate was given during the port stakeholders’ meeting of Port of Den Helder (PODH) and the Harbour and Shipping Association (Haven- en Scheepvaart Vereniging/HSV). This new development is known as Kooypunt III. At approximately 3pm, Pieter Kos, the Municipal Alderman of Den Helder, resolutely pressed the button to start a video in which various stakeholders explained the importance of the port and its continuing development.

The port stakeholders’ meeting was an informative meeting for all parties associated with the port

and the area around the port and took place at the site of recycling company Bek en Verburg, the first

airport is an important partner for the port.

Director Piet-Hein Kolff: “There is growing demand for plots of land among companies that wish to set up in business in Den Helder.

This is partly attributable to the increasing number of offshore and maritime businesses that are interested in Den Helder and partly attributable to growth in the port’s activities. So the planned expansion in the form of the Kooypunt III business estate is an essential step. This is an official go-ahead for creating space for development. More than 25 hectares of business estate are available for companies that want quality, accessibility, close collaboration and healthy competition.”

Sail 2017 The port stakeholders’ meeting concluded with a presentation made by the Sail 2017 Foundation.

The chairman, Vice-Admiral (retired) Jan van der Burg, enthusiastically explained how Den Helder intended to arrange hospitality for the most talked-about nautical event of the year. The foundation hopes to achieve the same level of success as the 2013 event. In 2013, Sail Den Helder and the Navy Days (Marinedagen) together attracted 330,000 visitors according to the organisation’s figures.

Sail 2017 will again be combined with the Navy Days.

Maersk Drilling names third XLE jack-up rig Maersk Drilling’s third XL Enhanced ultra harsh environment jack-up was named Saturday morning at a ceremony held at the Keppel FELS shipyard in Singapore. Mrs. Margareth Øvrum, Executive Vice President in Statoil, honoured Maersk Drilling by naming the rig Maersk Integrator.

Maersk Integrator is the third in a series of four ultra harsh environment jack-up rigs to enter Maersk Drilling’s rig fleet. The four jack-up rigs represent a total investment of USD 2.6bn. The first three jack-up rigs, including Maersk Intregrator, has now all been delivered from the Keppel FELS shipyard. The fourth will be delivered from the Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) shipyard in South Korea in 2016.

After delivery from the yard, Maersk Intregator will mobilize to the North Sea and commence a four year firm contract with Statoil for drilling on the Gina Krog field in the Norwegian North Sea. The estimated contract value for the firm contract is USD 620 million.

Throughout the construction period of the three XLE’s, they have been able to consistently provide value-added services while delivering products of the highest technical abilities to our satisfaction” Facts about the new ultra harsh environment XL Enhanced jackups from Maersk Drilling With a leg length of 206.8 m (678 ft) the rigs are the world’s largest jack-up rigs and are designed for year round operation in the North Sea, in water depths up to 150 m (492 ft).Uptime and drilling efficiency are maximised through dual pipe handling. While one string is working in the well bore, a second string of e.g. casing, drill pipe or bottom hole assembly can be assembled/disassembled and stored in the set-back area, ready for subsequent transfer for use in the well bore thus reducing the non-productive time. The drill floor features Multi Machine Control - a fully remote operated pipe handling system allowing all standard operations such as stand building and tripping to be conducted without personnel on the drill floor thus ensuring a high level of consistency across crews and an improved efficiency.

Royal IHC and Tompkins UK join forces to launch TI Geosciences A new force in deep water geotechnical survey and site investigation Royal IHC (IHC) has joined forces with Tompkins UK – the parent company of Modus Seabed Intervention – to enter the deep and ultra-deep water, oil and gas geotechnical survey and site investigation market under the banner of TI Geosciences. Tompkins’ extensive experience and track record in offshore, subsea and geotechnical contracting fields, combined with IHC’s engineering and advanced system design and development capabilities, will deliver world-class services to the oil and gas industry in this challenging sector.

TI Geosciences will initially provide cone penetration test (CPT)/gravity coring services. These will be based on Tompkins’ deep-push, buoyancy stabilised, deep-water CPT system – equipped with AP van den Berg’s digital pressure compensated Icone – deployed from a Swire Pacific Offshore G-class platform supply vessel.

Remote seabed drilling services are also scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2015, with the first in a range of IHC’s SWORD (sonic wireline-operated remote drill) systems, which will also be deployed from a Swire G-class vessel.

Services will be ISO 19901-6 and -8 compliant.

The SWORD systems will remain within IHC’s research and development programme. This will enable operating experience and new industry/technical demands to be fed into a process of continuous improvement, with the aim of each subsequent system continuing to raise the bar.

This advanced technology and a new cloud-based data management system will enable the company to simplify processes, reduce reporting time, enhance quality and increase competitiveness. Overall, it will be equipped to gain and sustain a market-leading position.

Supported by an initial investment of €17million, TI Geosciences will be based in Darlington, UK, with operating bases in Teeside, Singapore and Saldahna Bay, South Africa. It will benefit from the support and global reach of IHC’s international network of office, production and engineering facilities.

First of new series ASD Tug 2913 delivered to Petersen & Alpers Damen Shipyards Group has delivered the first vessel in its new ASD Tug 2913 class. The 2913 has been developed in response to demand from operators for more powerful tugs capable of handling today’s ever larger vessels. As well as having a bollard pull of 80 tonnes and total power of 5,050 BKw, the new tug is just 29 metres in length and highly manoeuvrable, making it ideal for operations in busy harbours where space is limited.

The ASD 2913 has accommodation for 10 personnel across six cabins and with a beam of 13 metres is very stable. It also has push/pull capabilities and can be fitted with an aft winch as an option. It is also the first Damen tug to be built with a double hull so as to comply with the latest safety regulations.

“We are very happy to be working once again with Damen,” said Peter Lindenau, Managing Director of Petersen & Alpers. “We had built up trust on our last project, and the whole package worked well for us. It is not just price but also performance, service and maintenance.”

The contract was signed in

The launch customer for the new model is German towage specialist Petersen & Alpers, and she will join an existing Damen ASD Tug 2411, which the company has been operating for the last four years out of Hamburg.

Designed for in-port operations Named the Michel, the ASD 2913 will also be working in and around Hamburg, which is made up of a series of small basins and narrow waterways. In such an environment and with modern trends towards larger vessels for greater efficiency, manoeuvrable, compact tugs with more power are needed today more than ever before. However the 2913 also has very good sea-keeping qualities, allowing here to undertake offshore operations when required.

February 2013 and, as the launch customer with over 200 years’ experience in shipping, Petersen & Alpers contributed a good deal of valuable input into the design by, for example specifying details such as an oil fired heating system.

Over the next two years a great deal of effort went into designing, engineering and building a tug that would deliver to its owner’s expectations and beyond.

Before the first of the ASD Tug 2913 was even launched, Damen has received strong interest in the vessel and its capabilities, and work is already underway building more for delivery at short notice.

As an insulator, you are responsible for professionally covering and insulating tubes, pipes and walls. Mammoet introduces Virtual Reality Crane

Event seeks out solutions to drive down costs and increase efficiency

Leading oil and gas industry figures will give their views on the growing importance of technology in helping the sector tackle cost and efficiency challenges in a difficult business environment at the Technology Showcase in Aberdeen on March 4.

The conference, organised by the Industry Technology Facilitator (ITF) in partnership with Oil & Gas UK, will take place at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre and aims to highlight the emerging technologies needed to improve production efficiency and curb rising operating costs in the UK Continental Shelf. The exhibition will showcase latest innovations from companies, universities and technology institutes across the UK.

The opening session will include presentations from Paul Warwick, executive vice president Europe Atlantic for Talisman Energy and Philippe Guys, managing director of Total E&P UK.

In his role as chair of the UK Technology Leadership Board, Mr Warwick will present on evolving technology priorities for the North Sea industry. He said: “Our industry faces many challenges operating in the mature environment of the UKCS and beyond. This creates opportunities for us to develop and deploy new and existing technologies to deliver greater capital efficiency, improved safety and reliability, and operational excellence.

“To be successful, we will require renewed creativity, ingenuity and innovation and focus on how we recognise and apply new and emerging technologies. This change in approach will help to attract the next generation of technical graduates and apprentices.”

Mr Guys will speak about Total’s technology roadmap and its support of the UK Technology Leadership board. He said: “Total takes a long term view when it comes to technology and we are looking to a future where innovation and the adoption of new technology will play an ever more vital role.

Total has built on its many years of experience in the North Sea and also made use of the research and development work our company has generated across the world.”

Other organisations set to present at the event include GE Oil & Gas, BP, Shell, Chevron and Baker Hughes. The event is also being

supported by the Department of Energy & Climate Change and the Department for Business Innovation & Skills.

With the arrival of a new custom built PTC Simulator, the Mammoet Training Center in The Netherlands has added a unique educational tool to its range of training courses.

The PTC simulator is a training device, purpose built to teach operators to handle Mammoet’s largest crane, the PTC 140/200 DS. The simulator is an exact replica of the crane’s operating system, complete with operator cabin, HD screens for visualization, server rack, crane control cabinet and instructor station.

Mammoet’s new generation PTC cranes are highly sophisticated machines with a multitude of sensors, computers and indicators to monitor and control the behavior of the crane and lift. The cabin is like an airplane’s cockpit and the crane operator has to rely heavily on the information he monitors on the various screens and onboard computers. In order to perform a controlled and safe operation the operator has to read and analyze complex information quickly. At the same time numerous joysticks and a myriad of buttons and switches must be operated simultaneously, to constantly adjust the crane’s, and load’s, speed, height, distance and more.

Learning to operate this complex machinery takes a lot of training

and practice. Therefore, once the PTC 140/200 DS cranes had been developed the next logical step for Mammoet was to create a dedicated simulator that can be used to train both novice and experienced operators.

The PTC simulator was built exclusively for Mammoet. With specialized software, the simulator provides a realistic PTC experience, right down to the operator’s seat and the sound the crane makes. High definition screens show exact replica visuals, and the variables in the scenarios are endless, from height and weight to weather circumstances and different seasons. The simulator can be used to practice every conceivable configuration with different operational requirements.

The simulator also serves to practice complex lifts long before the crane is erected at the job site. This is useful as it can serve to demonstrate the proposed lift to a client by using a virtual model of their own facility and the component that needs to be loaded. Furthermore, the software can be used to make an extensive risk assessment and practice the lift under various circumstances far in advance of the actual operation. This enables Mammoet to prepare the operation down to the finest detail.

The entire crew can see what the job entails, how long the job will take and identify potential hazards so they can be eliminated. By practicing the lift in advance, it is possible to reduce the time Mammoet needs at the client’s site.

Most importantly, safety is greatly increased by training operators to operate the crane and react to unusual situations. As it reduces the necessity to run the real PTC, it is also a sustainable solution that reduces Mammoet’s carbon footprint. The simulator has proved to be an instant success, with operators and trainers alike being enthusiastic about the benefits of being able to practice operations in a life-like and safe environment.

Overall, they provide a reasonable Total Cost of Ownership, making them attractive to countries that have a requirement to patrol an EEZ.” DSCT has prepared the vessels for outfitting with Sea Rogue weaponry; a system that includes a 20mm cannon forward of the wheelhouse and two 12.7mm Browning guns fitted respectively port and starboard of the wheelhouse. The Sea Rogue can be operated by a hand controller and has an accurate target-tracking feature. Working with manufacturer Reutech, DSCT can install the weaponry in a matter of days.

“The FCS 5009 is deliverable in two formats. It can be either a fast crew supply ship or a security patrol vessel,” says DSCT Chairman Sam Montsi, explaining that, though the vessels are complete and ready to go, they still possess flexibility. DSCT is able to carry out the final conversion for either option within a matter of weeks. They are also the first in their class to be outfitted with MTU engines that offer a lighter weight-to-power ratio for increased speed. “What this shows is the flexibility of Damen

vessels,” continues Mr Montsi.

“Even though we build for stock, the design of the vessels means they are capable of accommodating a range of different features to match specific requirements.”

Proven designs with full customisation potential Damen builds a wide range of both inshore and offshore patrol vessels and maintains stocks of many of the most popular models, enabling it to supply them to customers on a commercial off-the-shelf basis. On Tuesday 17th February 2015, FoundOcean and BASF launched an integrated material and service system for the provision of a new high strength grout, MasterFlow 9800, in Edinburgh, UK.

Global-leading energy services firm Proserv has won a much coveted industry award in recognition of its outstanding achievements after being named Company of the Year at the 2015 Subsea UK Awards last night (11 February).

Over the past year, Proserv has marked a number of key milestones including winning a series of high-profile contract awards globally, expanding its manufacturing facilities and capabilities and launching several new game-changing subsea technologies. Proserv also secured a major acquisition deal to help ensure its future sustainable growth and success.

Proserv engineer John Stoddard, who joined the company as a graduate just three years ago, also came under the spotlight at the Subsea UK Awards as a finalist

MasterFlow 9800 is set to revolutionise offshore grouting, by introducing a high strength grout with unrivalled operational advantages.

The material is able to be shipped and stored in silos rather than bags, facilitating quayside storage in all weathers, more flexibility in deck layout and no requirement for bag or container lifting during grouting operations and dockside resupplies.

The MasterFlow 9800 grout system uses an upgraded version of

FoundOcean’s Recirculating Jet Mixer (RJM). The delivery rates when using an RJM are upwards of 20m3/hr and therefore faster grouting of the annulus can be achieved, saving valuable offshore operating days. The closed circuit between the cement silo and RJM mixer, along with the continuous mixing process, also minimises overage, as well as reducing dust.

“Demanding offshore challenges have set extremely high requirements for the grout and grouting works in the development of MasterFlow 9800. Aligning the excellent properties of the new offshore grout with the operational advantages of FoundOcean’s continuous mixing and pumping equipment will bring major health and safety improvements and installation cost reductions,” says Luc Westhof, Global Key Account Manager at BASF Construction Chemicals.

The material offers a number of superior properties, including excellent early strength development, even at cold temperatures, and high fatigue resistance. When combined with its operational advantages, these properties have the potential to provide significant cost optimisation for the foundation installation, whilst ensuring the durability of the grouted connection.

Innovations lead to efficiency gains for Van der Velden Marine Systems’ customers Damen subsidiary kicks off second half-century with three innovations After celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2013, Van der Velden Marine Systems is not resting on its laurels. The Netherlands-based company’s R&D department is continuing along its successful path of advancing maritime manoeuvring and propulsion efficiency. Significantly, Van der Velden Marine Systems, a daughter company of the Damen Group, has a cooperative approach to R&D resulting in fruitful synergies and the sharing of expertise with other maritime experts.

“We are currently building a 97m2 Energy Saving Package (ESPAC™) system for a series of three 18,000 TEU vessels being built for CMA CGM at the CSSC-affiliated Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipyard in China,” says Edwin van Buren, Director R&D at Van der Velden Marine Systems. ESPAC™ illustrates the company’s relationships with other propulsion specialists: they developed the system with German propeller manufacturer Mecklenburger Metallguss (MMG). “These are the largest rudders we have ever built and, by putting them together with 10-metre MMG propellers, the whole package will minimise fuel consumption, cavitation, vibration and maintenance.” Drawing on the expertise from both companies, this tailor-made propulsion package combines the advantages of an optimised, highly efficient fixed pitch propeller and an asymmetric leading edge rudder with a propulsion bulb and adapted hubcaps.

Rudder feedback. The second innovation concerns the Barke Optimised Steering System (BOSS™),

which provides direct feedback to the helmsman about forces acting on the rudder. This information is a valuable tool to optimise navigation and manoeuvring. “It is important to know how much stress is placed on the rudder. The greater the resistance, the more fuel is consumed. The BOSS™ sensors measure these forces,” explains Mr Van Buren. The measured values are displayed on an LCD bridge display panel and are transferrable to the ship’s navigation system.

“Less steering corrections reduces the overshoots and shortens the distance travelled.

This quickly delivers significant fuel savings. ”Van der Velden has already installed BOSS™ technology on two ultra-large CMA

CGM-owned container vessels – the Ural and the Volga. The company recently carried commissioning and sea trials with the first BOSS™ system in cooperation with representatives from Damen’s own R&D team. During the IMO manoeuvring and endurance tests, Van de Velden recorded BOSS™ data and synchronised with the vessel’s dynamics. This successful data collection represents a milestone for Van der Velden product development and creates future opportunities for the next generation of BOSS™. At the same time Van der Velden’s design and engineering knowledge is developed with the ultimate benefit of clients. The system is not limited to container

vessels, however: “This technology is transferrable to the superyacht, cruise ship and dredging sectors.”

The company can also pre-install measurement sensors on rudder stocks with an eye to future installation of the total system. “It’s what we call a ‘BOSS-prepared’ delivery,” says Mr Van Buren.

Another recent innovation is Van der Velden’s retractable FLEX tunnel system, designed for inland and coastal ships. The system improves manoeuvrability, speed and overall fuel efficiency by approximately 10%. “We developed a retractable tunnel because, for about 85% of the time, loaded inland barges sail in deeper water,” continues Mr Van Buren. “In these situations, tunnels are unnecessary.

In fact, they only decrease propulsion capacity and increase fuel consumption.”

With an optimised hull design, the retractable tunnel system, developed in close collaboration with the German De-

velopment Centre for Ship Technology and Transport Systems (DST), ensures optimal water flow in both loaded and empty conditions and all water depths of inland rivers and canals.

Success through partnership R&D plays a crucial role across the Damen Shipyards Group. Based on its extensive knowledge of ship design, back in the 80s, Damen was the first to develop arithmetical schemes and computer models to better understand propulsion characteristics – yielding more accurate predictions of strength, vibration, noise and thrust. Damen built up its knowledge base through close cooperation with renowned scientific institutions such as Delft University of Technology and the University of Hamburg. Research using scale models in the testing tanks of MARIN (Maritime Research Institute Netherlands) and DST has also played a key role. Robert Allan Ltd designed and Vienna Model Basin optimised total eight push boats package is specifically customised for Hidrovias do Brasil S.A., which is a river iron ore transport subcontractor company for Vale. The unbeatable combination of power and manoeuvrability applied UZMAR SDP 4600 Pushboat in the 69 ton bollard pull range is more sophisticated than its predecessors. The RAL endurable design was not simply a regular pushboat where the high technology brings the future forward.

Increased fuel efficiency and safety innovative SDP 4600 is pushing the boundaries.

The main concern of the ship operator were shorter river voyage times with sophisticated power management technology, shallow draft with increased deadweight of speed, improved sea keeping ability, increased crew comfort, higher escort force performance, high propulsion technology, greater endurance, low emissions and low fuel consumption.

The vessels will be used for inland waterways logistics from Colombia in Brazil to Argentina and/or Uruguay through the Paraguay-Parana waterway. The total distance is over 2500km, much of it navigating through extremely curvy river sections which make excellent manoeuvrability a necessity. An additional crash stop requirement of 2.5 flotilla length proved to be a guiding factor. In order to meet the required throughput, eight push-boats will be constructed.

The flotillas will consist of one push-boat pushing 16 barges, with a total capacity of 40000 dwt. The operation will be a 24 hoursper day, 11 months per year operation with minimum downtime.

UZMAR worked with Robert Allan Ltd, which has extensive experience in the design of powerful and manoeuvrable river tugs. In order to meet demands for manoeuvrability maximized fuel economy and to comply with the crash stop requirement, extensive CFD analysis was performed by Robert Allan Ltd. As a result, the hull shape, tunnel geometry and propulsive components have been optimized for those specific requirements. This was then verified by a series of model tests conducted at the Vienna Model Basin in Austria.

The result of the deep researches created the new generation push-

boat which is a 45.6m LOA, 16.5m beam, 2.1m draft at the dry season and 2.4m draft at the wet season 7200bHP diesel-electric HFO powered push-boat with azimuth drives and propellers in nozzles configured for shallow water operation. The DE system is an AC variable rpm controlled designed and integrated by approved ABB system integrator Elkon / Imtech with complete ABB components.

During the sea trials, max bollard pull of 69 tons and speed of 13.2 kts are performed. Besides, due to UZMAR’s sophisticated engineering and construction applications the estimated vessel lightweight is achieved at 97% accuracy.

UZMAR SDP 4600 Pushbaot is a strong contribution to Hidrovias doBrasil’s dedicated strategy of developing a modern and internationally competitive inland waterways logistics.

We would like to share some highlights of the new born magic; Improved sea keeping, towing capabilities and a new hull form for shallow sailing draft is promising the future tech today. To improve the sea keeping and towing capabilities in shallow draft conditions, UZMAR and RA conducted extensive R&D, as well as Vienna Model Basin in Austria. The Pushboat has a completely revised hull form with a perfected dimensions and lightened hull and accommodation.

The diesel electric system is designed and manufactured by Turkey’s leading ship electrical en-

gineering and manufacturing company ELKON with ABB power electronics and supervision, which is a member of IMTECHGroup. These high-performance push boats are propelled by a state of the art diesel-electric propulsion system, with three main diesel generator sets providing 3 x 1,710 ekW of power to 3 x 1,600 kW motors, each driving a Schottel SRP 1215 Z-drive with nozzle modifiedfor shallow draft operation. The major electric components (AFE drives, propulsion motors, generators, etc.) are ABB components, supplied by Elkon, while the generator engines are three Wärtsilä 9L20, medium speed, each producing 1,800 bkW at 1,000 rpm. Shortly, the system works as follows: when a low level sailing speed/power required on board, the first engine starts at full load where the Verified Frequency Drivers separates the power to the propellers evenly.Nevertheless, if the power requirement reaches up to 40%, the second engine starts to feed up the propellers, the third engine follows this routine when

the power requirement reaches to 70%. This modification allows high fuel efficiency and longer life circle for the main engines and low CO2, NOx, SOx and PM emissions.

UZMAR reached the Crash Stop Requirement with adopting the Frequency Mode Effect Analyses, all possible emergency scenarios are analysed and installed to the system and examined onboard.

These push boats will run on HFO, with the ability to operate on MDO, if needed. Each push boat has a total fuel capacity of 500 m3 of HFO and 30 m3 of MDO, and a ballast capacity of 400 m3. The potable water capacity of 34 m3 is supplemented by two onboard flash evaporator units.

The vessel is outfitted for a maximum complement of 18 persons, with 6 single and and 6 double cabins spread over two deckhouse levels. Above a large wheelhouse with unobstructed 360° view allows operators excellent visibility of the barge convoy ahead as well as supervising bargeconnection work

taking place on the raised forecastle deck.

This accommodation layout has improved crew comfort and she is built to comply with the very latest IMO and MLC 2006 crew and comfort regulations. Noise and vibration levels are kept to a minimum due to flexibly mounted main engines and flexible drive couplings. The accommodation and wheelhouse have a floating floor to keep noise levels within lowest dB and vibration levels to a minimum. Everything has been considered from an ergonomic point of view. If the vessel is operated for 7/24 stretch, it has to be comfortable for the crew and this also makes it safer of course. At the same time,the wheelhouse design gives all round visibility and has a user friendly layout.

New Code Launched to Protect Dolphins at Aberdeen Harbour A joint taskforce has launched a Code of Practice to protect Bottlenose dolphins near Aberdeen’s Harbour mouth, and provide guidance to vessels operating in the port.

The code has been developed by a joint taskforce who have come together as a result of increased interest in the dolphins. The group includes: Aberdeen Harbour Board, East Grampian Coastal Partnership, Police Scotland and Scottish Natural Heritage; with expert advice from the University of Aberdeen, RSPB, the Sea Mammal Research Unit and Whale and Dolphin Conservation.

Aberdeen is one of the best places in Europe to view dolphins, with RSPB’s Dolphin Watch Project (partly sponsored by Aberdeen Harbour Board) reporting that visitors to Torry Battery have a nine in ten chance of seeing dolphins feeding near the city’s Harbour.

The guidance suggests boats maintain a steady course at the slowest possible speed, stay away from the breakwaters, avoid directly approaching the animals, avoid turning engines on and off,

and never feed, touch or swim with the dolphins. Patrick Jordan, environmental advisor at Aberdeen Harbour Board said, “We are very proud of the incredible diversity of wildlife in the Harbour. As stewards of this important habitat, we have a clear duty to treat its inhabitants with care and encourage other port users to do the same. The Dolphin Code will ensure everyone is made aware of best practices and keep the animals safe.”

Sebastian Cook, wildlife crime liaison officer at Police Scotland added, “Dolphins and other cetaceans (whales and porpoises) are European protected species and it is an offence to deliberately or recklessly disturb or harass them. The code is designed to help small boat crews avoid inadvertently committing any offences and ensure they can go about their business where possible, with minimum impact on the dolphin population, at Aberdeen Harbour.”

Hugh Chisholm, Safety and Survival Training Manager at the Petrofac Training Facility, based in Aberdeen Harbour added, “As an operator of training vessels which frequent the harbour channel, Petrofac very much welcomes these new guidelines. The dolphins and vessels co-exist within Aberdeen Harbour very successfully, and this code provides formal guidelines to ensure that this relationship continues to flourish. Petrofac is always keen to promote environmental best practice, and in this case it not only protects the dolphins, but also protects our staff and trainees from inadvertently causing harm to these wonderful creatures”.

Aberdeen Harbour is visited by a range of marine wildlife, including bottlenose, white beaked and risso dolphins, porpoises, minke whale and basking sharks. It is believed that although primarily aimed at dolphins, the guidelines will benefit all of such wildlife visiting the harbour. The code will be widely distributed to vessel owners, port users and stakeholders.

Maersk Drilling secures cotract for ultra deepwater drillship Maersk Voyager Maersk Drilling has been awarded a contract from eni Ghana Exploration and Production Ltd., an eni subsidiary, for employment of the newbuild drillship Maersk Voyager. The firm contract period is 3.5 years with an option to extend by one year. The total estimated revenue from the firm contract is USD 545m including mobilisation and escalations. Maersk Voyager will work on the Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTP) Project offshore Ghana with expected commencement in July 2015.

Maersk Voyager is the last in a series of four ultra deepwater drillships in Maersk Drilling’s rig fleet. The rig was delivered on 6 February 2015 from the Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) shipyard in Geoje-Si in South-Korea. The four drillships represent a total investment of USD 2.6bn.

Facts about the new drillships from Maersk Drilling Featuring dual derrick and large subsea work and storage areas, the design allows for efficient well construction and field development activities through offline activities. Mammoet handles a 2,000 ton German nuclear reactor Germany – the decommissioning of a nuclear pilot reactor in Jülich, Germany, has reached an important milestone after Mammoet removed the reactor vessel from the plant during a highly complex operation. after 20 years of operation. The facility is being decommissioned by AVR GmbH. Mammoet was contracted to design and execute the removal of the most critical part, the reactor vessel, from the plant.

Before decommissioning could begin, a large building, a so called material lock, was constructed over the existing reactor building. This allowed the reactor building to be opened in a protected environment for removal of the reactor vessel.

The reactor was a prototype pebble bed reactor which was constructed in the 1960’s. Its purpose was to demonstrate the feasibility and viability of a gas-cooled, graphite-moderated high temperature reactor. It was shut down in 1988

Mammoet custom-designed the skidding and lifting equipment to move the reactor vessel from the reactor building into the material lock. The vessel weighs 2,000 tons, is 26 meters high and has a diameter of 7.6 meters. It was lifted from its former position in the reactor building, moved and then placed into a custom-built support frame.

Later this year the reactor vessel will be lifted out of its support

frame and moved from its current vertical position into a horizontal position. It will then be placed in a transport frame, and transported on Self Propelled Modular trailers (SPMT) to a purpose built storage building where it will rest for the next 40-60 years until final storage is available in Germany.

The project involves reclaiming approximately 160 hectares of new land requiring in excess of 20 million cubic meters of dredged sand. Two jumbo trailing suction hopper dredgers will be deployed for the dredging and reclamation activities sourcing sand from local borrow areas.

Soil improvement and rock revetment works also form part of the project. Work will commence immediately and the project is expected to be completed in 2018.

Europe’s largest annual subsea exhibition and conference and Aberdeen’s second largest event after Offshore Europe, broke all records this year with a 23% increase in attendees and 200 exhibitors.

Commenting on the success of the event, Neil Gordon - chief executive of Subsea UK, the show’s organisers, said: “This year’s event has surpassed all expectations.

Dana Petroleum completes successful drilling campaign in licence 12/06 in Danish North Sea The Lille John-2 (LJ-2) appraisal well and side-track confirmed the presence of sweet, light oil in the Late Miocene sandstone reservoir.

The thickness and quality of the sandstone reservoir encountered in LJ-2 was found, as expected, to be improved relative to the LJ-1 discovery well drilled in 2011.

The entire reservoir package was cored, a comprehensive log suite gathered followed by a drill stem test over the entire interval. The production test showed a maximum flow rate of 1,400 bbls/day, with no sand production.

The oil quality was similar to that found in the LJ-1, being 34°-35° API with no H2S. Detailed evaluation of the acquired data will now be performed to confirm the exact thickness of the oil pay in order to assess the recoverable volumes in the Lille John accumulation and to determine commerciality.

The Danish Exploration Licence 12/06 also contains the Broder Tuck gas/condensate discovery. Dana acquired 40 per

cent equity in the licence from PA Resources last year and assumed operatorship on 1 June 2014.

The 12/06 licence is located near existing Dana operated licences in the Netherlands; the F02a production licence containing the Hanze oil field and Pliocene (shallow) gas field and the F06 exploration licence.

Dana’s Exploration Director Dr Richard Fox said: “The results of the appraisal well and side-track are very encouraging demonstrating a healthy oil flow rate. The 12/06 licence is a great strategic fit for Dana giving us access to resources close to our existing licences operated from our Netherlands office, as we look to grow and develop our European operations.”

Offshore industry to focus on spill response through multi-stakeholder approach Industry, government and regulators join the debate at Interspill 2015 The oil and gas industry is set to discuss the importance of maintaining focus on oil spill response across all sectors at the three day Interspill conference and exhibition in Amsterdam from 24 – 26 March.

Rob Cox, technical director at IPIECA and Interspill chairman, believes it is crucial that spill prevention and response remains a high priority even as the many initiatives set up after the 2009/10 offshore incidents are starting to deliver results.

He said: “Significant progress has

been made in the aftermath of the Montara and Macondo incidents by the offshore industry but we must not take our eye off the ball; it is vital this work continues. The upstream community is more engaged than ever and legislation is hardening, so we are expecting a lot of debate around articulating the financial impacts of risk to help

progress response capability for the offshore sector.”

Interspill 2015 brings together industry, academia and government to hear about the latest developments in spill prevention and response. In addition to the conference, the exhibition will showcase the most ground-breaking technologies helping to improve response times and protect the environment. In the biggest exhibition to date, more than 100 exhibitors will demonstrate their latest innovations.

Mr Cox added: “The 1990 Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Cooperation Convention tasks industry to work cooperatively with the IMO and its national delegations and the statistics clearly show the success of our joint work with shipping. Now an opportunity exists for us to work together with international regulators to help improve global oil pollution prevention and preparedness in the offshore sector. We anticipate this will be of great interest to operators and the wider industry keen to hear about how the IOPER principles could drive regional and local regulation in practice.”

The spill industry seminars feature presentations from leading manufacturers and other organisations, highlighting the latest developments.

The science workshops, led by Cedre will include sessions on dispersant breakthroughs, bioremediation, HNS pollution and spill impact assessment. In particular, the workshop on dispersant breakthroughs will take place on Tuesday at 1.30pm and focuses on chemical dispersion of oil in arctic areas, deep sea and tropical regions. Presenters include Tom Coolbaugh, distinguished scientific associate at ExxonMobil, Per Daling, senior research scientist at SINTEF and Francois Merlin, former head of R&D at Cedre.

The well-established programme of educational short courses on a variety of spill related topics will run at the venue on Monday 23 March, the day before the conference opening.

Interspill 2015 takes place at Amsterdam RAI Convention Centre.

The last event in 2012 in London attracted over 1,300 delegates, visitors and exhibitors from over 70 countries.
