Tekmar scoops prestigious award for export success The outstanding international success of cable protection specialist, Tekmar Energy, has resulted in the firm being presented with the prestigious Export Award at the North East Business Awards. Tekmar received the recognition last night (12 March) at the annual event that recognises exceptional business and innovation in the Durham and Wearside region. The award caps a remarkable 12 months for the firm that has seen it begin work in the United States and the Middle East for the first time while continuing to build on its position as the partner of choice for operators in Europe. In all, overseas sales accounted for an impressive 86% of Tekmar’s total sales in 2014. James Ritchie, chief executive officer at Tekmar, said: “Our overseas growth has been as the result of a long-term strategy. We are continuing to win contracts at home and overseas with the move into new international regions going hand in hand with the opening of our new manufacturing facilities in Newton Aycliffe. “It has been a busy and successful past year for us and we look forward to this continuing throughout 2015.” With more than 28 years’ experience, Tekmar is a market leader
in the design, manufacture and supply of subsea cables, umbilicals and flexible protection systems for the oil & gas and renewable energy industry. The company established itself in the US market after forming a strategic partnership with American company Whitman Consulting Group and has gone on to build relationships with developers and installers through the supply of its cable protection systems on numerous US wind farms which are currently in development. Tekmar has also expanded into the Middle East for the first time and won multiple oil & gas contracts in this region as well as other international markets. The worldwide growth of the company has been reinforced by the introduction to market of the firm’s latest innovation, TekTube®. The product has been specifically designed as a solution for future projects to continue to help drive down cost reduction, improve offshore installation rates and ensure cable integrity for the service life typically 25
years. TekTube has been devised for installation onshore rather than offshore. Once in place, the system is then transported to the offshore project site to be secured to the jacket, sealed and prepared to be received by the cable installation vessel. The work before TekTube is deployed offshore offers significant
savings on installation vessel time and, ultimately, costs. TekTube has been developed utilising the same protection methodology as the market-leading, proven industry standard TekLink system. The TekLink system, which is designed for a 30-year life time, revolutionises the connection of subsea power
cables into monopile foundations. TekTube offers an alternative to TekLink for jacket, gravity-base and floating foundations. The North East Business Awards were presented at Ramside Hall, Durham. For more information about Tekmar, please visit – www.tekmar.co.uk
Mammoet installs Malampaya Depletion Compression Platform for Shell During a 48 hour operation, Mammoet recently installed the Malampaya Phase 3 Depletion Compression Platform in the West Philippine Sea for its client Shell Philippines Exploration b.v. The Malampaya Depletion Compression Platform (DCP) is a brand new type of ‘self-installing platform’: the platform floats into place over its end-location after which the legs are lowered onto the prepared seabed. It uses a pre-installed jacking system to enable the 80m legs to be jacked down and lift the platform from the water to its final position. This technology avoids the need for the large specialized vessels that are normally required for an offshore platform installation. Mammoet was contracted for the offshore operation to lower the DCP legs and lift the platform to its final height. The DCP’s end-location is next to the Malampaya Shallow Water Production Platform (SWP) to which it will be linked by a permanent bridge, also to be installed by Mammoet. The Malampaya Project located off the coast of Northwest Palawan, the Philippines, is a Shell-operated initiative on behalf
of its joint venture partners and the Philippine government. The gas-to-power project is aiming to sustain to supply 30% of the country’s energy requirement. Now in Phase 3, the new platform will help sustain the extraction of natural gas from the Palawan basin and process it in a shallow water production platform before transporting the gas along a 504-kilometer underwater pipeline towards the onshore gas plant and eventually to its power plant customers. Mammoet was involved in the DCP’s construction, assisting with lifting and lowering the platform during the fabrication process. During the platform’s construction, the strand jacks were also installed to prepare for the jack down of the DCP’s legs and to raise the platform into place. Keeping a gas platform stable out at sea, while installing the platform’s legs on the seabed and being buffeted by waves, is a delicate process.
Out at sea, waves hit the floating platform creating movement. To keep the platform level, some of the strand jacks need to make upward movements, while others make downwards movements at the same time. In other words, different strand jacks must be active simultaneously in opposite directions to buffer the upwards and downwards movement of the DCP before the legs are positioned and the platform is raised out of the water. To facilitate this precise calibration, part of the strand jack installation included special ‘guying
valves’ and a new computer system to create a constant tension to deal with the movement of the platform on the water. The platform is now being held in its raised position, with its 80m legs secured on the seabed, awaiting the completion of the operation to weld it in place and install the connecting link-bridge. Mammoet’s experience in installing and raising offshore platforms ensured the project was executed swiftly and safely within 48 hours. Use of the ‘self-installing platform’ avoided the need for specialized barges that would have been nec-
essary for the more conventional float-over platform installation method. This saved Shell valuable time and resources.

Going global Damen Yichang Shipyard enters new era The Damen Yichang Shipyard in China is poised to enter a new era. Commencing operations in 1999, the joint venture between Damen Shipyards Group and Sinotrans CSC has had a successful history of delivering cargo vessels from the Damen portfolio. Now, the yard is rolling out an increased portfolio of vessels to a wider market audience. “Over the years we have achieved a good reputation for delivery time, reliability and quality,” says Executive Director at Damen Shipyards
Group Hans Voorneveld about the yard on the Yangtze River. The Yichang yard has always excelled in the construction of cargo vessels
up to 15,000dwt. Whilst it will continue to build such vessels, from now on, there will be an additional focus on other, high-tech vessel types. “We’re looking at dredgers, pontoons and barges, LNG/LPG tankers and offshore support vessels, such as platform suppliers,” explains Mr Voorneveld. Since the decision was taken to increase the
range, things have moved fast. The yard is already building a number of specialised pontoons, whilst plans for dredgers are now being finalised. Additionally, finalisation of plans for LPG tanker construction is expected imminently. As the yard’s product portfolio expands, so too will its geographical reach. Damen Yichang Shipyard’s cargo vessels have mainly aimed for the Western European marketplace. The wider product range, however, will be going global. “Already we are building pontoons for specialised projects in the Far East and Latin America, as well as for stock. The dredgers also have an international market,” Mr Voorneveld states. Current capacity at the yard is sufficient for Damen to simultaneously construct ten pontoons along with two dredgers, LNG/LPG tankers or offshore support vessels. Damen and Sinotrans are investing in developing the building and design process for complex vessels at the yard; however, pre-existing
infrastructure has enabled it to embark smoothly upon this new venture, as Mr Voorneveld indicates. “Everything is already in place, the yard is completely up and running. There’s an experienced workforce of around 1,000 personnel. We have been building high quality vessels at Damen Shipyards Yichang for a long time, this is more about adjusting the organisation to new products.” He highlights the yard’s steel cutting facilities, six available berths for section building and assembly and a sideways launching system, saying, “Damen Yichang Shipyards is offering a new portfolio of sophisticated vessels in one integrated package – from engineering, steel building, outfitting and trials right through to commissioning.” The new direction is good news for Damen Yichang Shipyard. The evolution of the vessel range being built at the yard, combined with the anticipated international distribution of orders, represents the entry into a new epoch with a bright future.
Leading Tasmania subsea training centre addresses Asia Pacific skills shortage A world renowned diver training facility in Tasmania is helping address the skills shortage in the Asia Pacific subsea sector as it teams up with a Malaysian recruitment and training provider. The Underwater Centre, Tasmania is working with a team of 21 candidates who have been put forward for training by Kuala Lumpur-based Samsian Solution & Services. Samsian Solution & Services provides training and recruitment opportunities for personnel in the oil and gas, mining, water, power and maritime sectors in South East Asia. The students are currently completing The Underwater Centre’s Standard Commercial Diving Training Package, which qualifies them to work onshore and offshore as commercial divers. The threemonth training course includes the required Australian Diving Accreditation Scheme (ADAS) Parts 1, 2 and 3 certifications, providing them with the necessary accreditation to work legally as a diver. Part 1 of the training involves occupational SCUBA diving to 30 metres and includes training predominantly in the use of subsea hand-tools, in surveys and inspection diving, and rescue diving, while Part 2 is Occupational SSBA (Surface Supply) to 30 metres and includes pneumatic and hydraulic powered tools training, such as jack-hammering, needle-gunning and air-lift dredging. Students are also taught about salvage, construction, welding and burning. Meanwhile, ADAS Part 3 is the entry-level qualification required for gaining work in the offshore indus-
try and involves diving up to 50m, the deepest occupational ticket achievable on air. Part 3 sees the use of wet-bells, chamber use and operation, decompression diving, more rescues, offshore awareness, and advanced underwater work. Samsian Solution & Services spokesperson Jamie Tham said that they chose The Underwater Centre’s ADAS training for their candidates because of its recognition in the region’s oil and gas sector. “Before being chosen to take up the training, each of the candidates must carry out a range of assessments and physical tests. They must also demonstrate their passion for being an ADAS-accredited diver and the work that will entail,” she said. “The Underwater Centre has an excellent reputation in the industry and we have found the team of staff and instructors there to be very helpful. Commercial diving is a skill that is currently in high demand within our local industry, and most of the candidates will be able to secure a job with oil and gas contractors once they have completed the training. We will help them secure job placements within the industry.” The Centre’s Operations Manager Herb Mitton said the team was working very well and that they were learning skills vital for the ‘real world’. “The men are performing very well with a good level of theoretical
knowledge and in-water prowess being displayed by them all. This has also been the case with regards to their attitude shown toward their training and tasks, and they are working very well as a team, learning the skills they will need in the real world,” said Herb. “The ADAS guidelines and competencies we train and assess under are realistic, achievable with effort and hard work, and are exactly tailored to industry requirements. We very much expect our students to earn their qualifications.” The Underwater Centre, Tasmania, is based at Beauty Point. The Centre has been delivering diver education since 1996 and was originally created to address the demand for commercial diver training in the South East Asia Pacific region. It is the only school in the world to offer all levels of the internationally-accepted ADAS commercial diver certification, from ADAS Part 1, right up to ADAS Part 4 Closed Bell. It has a sister base in Fort William, Scotland. Subsea Industry Supports Valuable Schools’ STEM Initiative More aspiring young engineers will get the chance to participate in an international competition to design underwater machinery and robotics thanks to leadership and support from Subsea UK. The body, which represents the £9billion subsea industry in the UK, has entered into a long-term partnership with RGU to sustain and extend the highly successful Scottish MATE ROV Challenge. The major STEM initiative aims to inspire future engineers through hands-on experience of designing remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) used underwater in the oil and gas, defence, oceanology and marine renewables industries. The annual
event, which is coordinated by the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Centre in California in partnership with Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University (RGU), involves teams made up of pupils from schools across Scotland. To date, MATE ROV has worked with 460 pupils from 29 schools with an annual commitment from BP and ad-hoc support from other oil and gas companies.Subsea UK chief executive, Neil Gordon, said: “MATE ROV has captured the imagination of school pupils and subsea business alike since it was first run in Scotland in 2008. Representing the entire subsea supply chain, Subsea UK is ideally placed to communicate and
promote the initiative to industry, ensuring more meaningful engagement. This in turn will provide the best experience for the pupils who may become tomorrow’s subsea industry leaders. By bringing the industry closer to the programme and securing longer-term commitments in terms of cash, expertise and equipment, we hope to extend its reach to more pupils across Scotland and eventually to other regions in the UK.” Subsea company
ROVOP has also stepped in to support the initiative, which along with the financial contribution of Subsea UK and another new sponsor, brings a much-needed £16,000 to the programme. Mr Gordon added: “With the sharp decline in oil price, many companies are having to re-evaluate their support for initiatives such as this. We are delighted that ROVOP has come alongside Subsea UK and BP to safe-guard this valuable programme and give budding young engineers a real taste of the subsea industry. The subsea industry must have a pipeline of engineers for the next generation and MATE ROV has proved that it engages pupils with industry in a compel-
ling way.” ROVOP has provided its backing to the project which gives students the chance to work on ROVs and provide solutions to subsea conundrums. The skills required to tackle the work are designed to promote an interest and understanding in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects. Doug Middleton, operations director at ROVOP, said: “ROVOP is committed to leading the use of technology and training to improve the subsea industry. The MATE ROV Challenge offers unique experience of designing, building and operating subsea remotely operated vehicles. We are excited to support the involvement of young people whose skills and ingenuity will drive the industry forward in future. We need efficiency and new ideas at a time when many companies are cutting investment.” RGU engineering lecturer and competition co-ordinator, Graeme Dunbar, said: “We are delighted that Subsea UK and ROVOP have all come on board to sponsor the MATE competition this year, adding to the vital financial support that we continue to receive from BP North Sea who have supported the competition from the start and the provision of underwater cameras by DOF Subsea. “The competition is a fantastic way of sparking a love of engineering in school pupils and over the years we have seen more and more schools and pupils interested in getting involved. It is an investment in the future of the industry and the support that we are receiving from all our sponsors will allow us to expand and improve the MATE competition which is fantastic.” The winners of the Scottish competition, which is held on April 2 at RGU, will go forward to the international final to pit their wits against qualifiers from 24 other regions around the world at The Marine Institute, St John’s, Newfoundland in Canada. Churchill Drilling Tools delivers first HyPR™ Royal IHC launches IHC IQIP HoleSaver™ stuck pipe insurance to operators Churchill Drilling Tools, the provider of innovative Dart Activated Strings™, has announced that the first of its new HyPR™ HoleSaver™ hydraulic pipe recovery systems has been delivered, amidst growing international demand. Two major operators have now selected the cost-saving tool for projects in the North Sea whilst another is planning imminent deployment in the Gulf of Mexico. Encouragingly, some onshore operators have also identified
technology. Director Mike Churchill said: “The first orders for the HyPR™ HoleSaver™ confirm the need for simple technology that lowers the cost of drilling and we are delighted to have received such a positive
potential scenarios in which the system has applications too. Developed by the Houston and Aberdeen-located company towards the end of 2014, the HyPR™ HoleSaver™ is the world’s first hydraulic pipe recovery system. It is faster, simpler and safer than using traditional recovery methods and is set to save the global drilling industry millions of dollars in cost and time reduction. Churchill is recognized for products of trusted quality, simplicity and performance for the oil and gas industry, many of which exploit its Dart Activated Strings™
reaction so quickly.” “An operator who has concerns over stuck pipe can effectively insure against excessive costs by running the HyPR™ HoleSaver™ in the drillstring to recover the program more quickly should things go wrong. The low cost of running the tool, which requires no specialist mobilization, combined with rapid recovery will provide significant cost reductions in these challenging wells.” The HyPR™ HoleSaver™ consists of a full strength sub positioned in the drillstring, which is severed in approximately one hour. A jetting
dart is launched and lands inside the sub and, after a relatively short period of pumping, the sub parts easily under a small loading, offering a perfect fish-neck or immediate side-track cementing options. Mr Churchill added: “Stuck pipe incidents cost the drilling industry millions, if not billions of dollars each year. With the sector tightening the purse strings even further, it’s paramount to ensure cost-effective solutions are established to mitigate the burden inherently associated with stuck pipe. “The HyPR™ HoleSaver™ can be run singly, normally above a circulation sub, or in multiples throughout the string to maximize coverage options. “Once landed, the dart will jet the internal API pin connection in around 60 minutes and the sub can be easily parted with a small amount of torque and or over pull from the surface. Once parted the pipe can be recovered allowing side-tracking or fishing operations to commence instantly.” For more information about the HyPR™ HoleSaver™ and the company’s Dart Activated Strings™ please visit the Churchill Drilling Tools’ website CircSub.com

YOUR MOBILE DEVICE “The most important communication device in the workplace” Have you ever noticed how important the smartphone is of your colleague? Look around during the next work break and besides the interest for their coffee, the soda and a bite, and a little chat, they check their mobile device. The sports results, social media, What’s App and the news are all being checked... Now I could have asked you, how often you check your smartphone, but looking around is always easier then looking to your self…
“THINK ABOUT IT WHEN ORGANISATIONS START TO USE ALL THESE FUNCTIONALITIES
Today the mobile device is the most important communication device in the workplace. The funny thing is that besides work mail hardly any other company info is being pushed towards mobile devices. And vice versa, communication from team members towards the office, besides mail and a phone call is hardly organised.
IN A SMART WAY”
When you think about it, it’s pretty strange, because we; - What’s App with our sport friends to arrange whom drives to the next soccer match. - Notes are being made, what not to forget.
- Order food and other products with our smartphone. - Read all kinds of news about all the topics we are interested in. - Communicate to our friends when we are available for a drink. - Get a push message when our favourite sportclub has scored or when we need to be careful for getting a speeding ticket. All via our smartphone… So think about it when organisations start to use all these functionalities in a smart way, it would save a lot of time in administration, you will get much more info about your company, it would save you a lot of time to communicate back, etc. But more simply isn’t it about time that we simply make use of a device that we (hardly) can’t live without? - Bob Boekema Backbone Company Industrieweg 13A 1521 NC Wormerveer +31(0)20 3034949 sales@backbonecompany.com www.backbonecompany.com

Building the largest 4G offshore network in the world Arendal, Norway: Statoil has chosen Maritime Communications Partner (MCP) to deploy and operate their high speed 4G-network on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). Statoil and MCP have signed a six years contract with an option to extend for another four years. With that MCP will immediately start building the world’s largest 4G network at sea. Statoil will benefit from highspeed mobile coverage on all of its 34 platforms on the NCS. This will greatly improve communications between platforms, rigs and supply-vessels. Initially 15 rigs, two light well intervention vessels (LWI), two subsea inspection and maintenance vessels (IMR) and 50 supply ships will be covered. High capacity, stability and availability
will promote opportunities for integrated operations. - Mobile operators and technology have through time, transformed how businesses operate. A state of the art high speed 4G network will facilitate even more innovation and efficiency improvement in the oil- and gas-industry, says MCP’s CEO Frode Støldal. - This contract is a significant milestone in our offshore strategy where we apply an industrial approach, standardized infrastructure and a long-term plan for further expansion. The agreement includes existing and new oilfields operated by Statoil. In addition to opening up for expansion into the UK Continental Shelf and other areas of Statoil’s international operation, the
contract strongly supports MCP’s strategy in becoming the world’s leading maritime operator. - Statoil is the leading operator on the NCS. The agreement is an important contribution in enabling a significant modernization of the mobile network and we are looking forward to cooperate with the company, said Støldal. Telenor owned MCP specialize in communications solutions for shipping and offshore installations. MCP already owns 16 base stations on NCS that will be upgraded to high speed 4G during 2015. As new oil fields are developed, coverage and capacity will follow. An additional benefit for the maritime businesses such as merchant marine and fisheries is the general availability of mobile communications for all at sea. MCP has since its inception in 2002 had extensive technology cooperation with Ericsson. Charlotta Sund, Head of Ericsson Northern Europe & Central Asia, says:
- As a driving force behind the ‘Networked Society’ and a key player within the global telecommunications industry, we are proud to cooperate with MCP to bring
high-speed 4G services to Statoil and the NCS. We have a long term focus on our partnership with MCP and the user experiences offered to their customers.

From pollution to solution Bellona Foundation and Damen to cooperate on low-emission designs The Oslo-based NGO Bellona Foundation has launched a three year partnership with the leading Dutch company Damen Shipyards Group. The main goal of the partnership is to explore and develop concept vessels for the future. The agreement will be officially signed on March 18 during an industry event in Stavanger. The Bellona Foundation and Damen both acknowledge that today’s global shipping industry will need to undergo substantial change in order to achieve its own climate and environmental objectives. The NGO and Damen have joined forces to work towards reducing the impact on the climate of a wide range of commercial and leisure vessels, as well as fleets
employed by the aquaculture industry. “One of Bellona’s goals is to make the ships of the future independent of fossil fuels. This partnership will provide us with new knowledge on innovative shipping construction that will contribute towards achieving that objective, said Frederic Hauge, founder and president of
The Bellona Foundation. “Today the global shipping industry emits large amounts of CO2, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and other gases harmful to the climate and environment, and the European fleet is large and in need of renewal. The next three years of partnership with Damen will make us better equipped to handle the challenges, both domestically and internationally.” “We are very pleased to be starting this partnership with Bellona,” added Damen’s Remko Hottentot, Sales Manager Norway, stationed at Damen’s Norway Office in Stavanger. “We have a strong focus on sustainability and the vision of each organisation complements the other in terms of environmental awareness. At Damen the focus will be on creating alternative solutions that contribute to reducing harmful maritime emissions into both the air and the water. This will go hand in hand with initiatives to develop cost-effective efficiencies through reduced consumption of potentially harmful inputs such as fuel, paint and lubricating oil. During this long term relationship we foresee in general a valuable focus on co-operating in the creation of environmental technical sustainable solutions and the fostering of political support.”
Foundation, as well as Norway’s maritime community as a whole, can learn a good deal from Damen when it comes to developing the next generation of low-emissions vessels. He sees Damen as an international trendsetter challenging the Norwegian mindset in a positive manner. From his perspective this partnership will improve the Bellona Foundation’s capability to influence both the Norwegian and European
Hauge believes that the Bellona
shipping industries. Bellona has a 29-year track record of working on maritime political matters at a high international level, from their offices in both Oslo and Brussels. The partnership with Damen represents an important milestone for the organisation, giving it access to new knowledge and technology that will enable it to influence Norwegian and European politics even more than before.

High-tech metamorphosis at Damen underpins European fisheries research
Tridens joins select group of vessels installed with ‘drop keel’ echosounder technology Last week – right on schedule – the Dutch governmental shipping company Rijksrederij (part of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment, Rijkswaterstaat) took delivery of its scientific research vessel Tridens after an extensive refit at Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam in the Netherlands. Tridens underwent a major midlife conversion to boost the vessel’s multifunctional capabilities for fisheries research, including installation of an innovative ‘drop keel’. The Rijksrederij is the custodian of the North Sea and manages a fleet of specialist vessels. The maritime research institute IMARES, in collaboration with other European fisheries institutes, employs Tridens (73.5 metres in length and 14 metres beam) to help determine fish stocks in the North Sea, among other duties. Tight project schedule Looking to increase efficiency in employing the 25-year-old Tridens, the Rijksrederij developed a hightech engineering package together with Damen Research, Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam and GNE BV Hardinxveld-Giessendam. “We’ve worked with Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam
over many years for maintenance,” says Dirk Kuijt, Technical Manager at the Rijksrederij, “but this is the first time we’ve completed a refit of this scale and the first time we’ve installed a drop keel. The cooperation with Damen has been exceptional. It was a very big project for us and we had a very tight schedule. Tridens is departing immediately for survey trials and will shortly represent the Netherlands in a four-week joint European survey, so we were all under a lot of pressure. I’m very pleased with how Damen completed the project according to plan.” No air bubble interference During the refit, Tridens was fitted with a wide range of modern scientific research equipment,
including the innovative drop keel with broadband multibeam echosounder installed by IJmuidenbased WNL Marine Electronics. With the new equipment, Tridens can accurately track biomass and fish shoals in the ocean as well as conduct bathymetric surveys. Deployed up to 3 metres proud of the hull, the drop keel eliminates interference from the air bubbles that normally form around the hull and can affect the performance of the echosounders. Researching the research ship The Rijksrederij was eager to ensure the conversion project would deliver a highly effective and efficient solution. The meticulous planning before the conversion included detailed studies on board the Irish research ship Celtic Explorer, delivered by Damen in 2003. Celtic Explorer is also fitted with a drop keel, however the installation
on board Tridens was far from a simple ‘copy and paste’. Complex calculations were necessary to determine the most favourable arrangement of the (sonar) transducers within the drop keel to track shoals effectively.
The drop keel’s specialised engineering works lasted 27 days. But the extent of the project went much further. Making Tridens future-proof for another 10 years of demanding mobilisations required a complete refit and modernisation. This part of the project saw Damen refurbish cabins for
the crew, and overhaul the main engines, all propulsion equipment and the steering apparatus. The refit included completely replacing the stern gantry and winches and maintenance of the stern mast, booms, A-frame and the corners of the stern of the vessel. In addition, a dedicated device was developed for safe hauling of otter boards. Ready to play its part Following successful delivery on 2 March 2015, Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam can look back with pride on its largest refit project ever. Even with additions to the work scope during the project, Tridens was delivered on time. The yard puts the successful project down to its professional craftsmanship and excellent cooperation with the Rijksrederij and suppliers. Tridens is ready to play its part in increasing efficiency in the Dutch government’s fleet while acquiring much needed data about our oceans.
ensure the industry reduces risk and increases competency.” Atlas Knowledge was awarded the original MIST contract for experienced oil and gas workers six years ago. The milestone marked the first time a single training provider had been tasked with delivering a training solution to the UK’s offshore sector. To improve engagement and increase the learning experience of users, the MIST Online refresher programme has been created using the latest advances in learning technology. It now includes enhanced, asset-based video content and is accessible via most computers, operating systems, browsers and tablets. Streamlined performance data will also allow for industry benchmarking and continual improvements to ensure the course continues to meet the needs of the sector. Mark Neilson, standards and approvals director at OPITO, said: “It is widely recognised that
a key component to achieving a reduction in the number of accidents in the UK Continental Shelf offshore industry is to improve safety training for all personnel. The MIST programme ensures that everyone working offshore has the right training and skills to reduce the risk of accidents. “The extensive consultation undertaken by a wide-ranging group of industry stakeholders ensures that this training continues to meet the fundamental need to keep the offshore workforce safe. Atlas’ technical expertise, knowledge of the oil and gas business and successful track record has been an integral part of developing this high quality safety training package for the industry.” Once complete, MIST training will continue to be valid for four years. Offshore workers who have completed original MIST within the last six months will have free access to the new course content without the need of a new licence.
Far-reaching consequences Installing the drop keel also had far-reaching consequences for the rest of the vessel, requiring extensive engineering of the ship’s design and layout in order to accommodate the trunk – a kind of elevator shaft in which the drop keel is lowered.
Atlas Knowledge secures second seven-year safety contract INTERNATIONAL learning technologies market leader Atlas Knowledge has secured a major seven year contract to deliver second generation safety critical training to the UK offshore workforce. The deal reaffirms the Scottish-headquartered company’s position as the provider of the Minimum Industry Safety Training (MIST) online programme in the North Sea; with an expected 150,000 workers expected to undertake the training during the term of the contract. MIST was introduced to the North Sea in 2009 to provide all workers travelling offshore with baseline safety awareness in order to reduce the risk of accidents and injury. An OPITO-approved standard, more than 100,000 workers have undertaken the Atlas Knowledge training since its creation. In securing the contract for a second term, the company retains its position as the only provider approved to deliver MIST refresher training. The new programme will be rolled out from this month
onwards. Following extensive consultation by industry skills body OPITO with a cross-industry work group including the Health & Safety Executive, the International Association of Drilling Contractors, the International Marine Contractors Association, Step Change in Safety and others, MIST has been significantly restructured to take account of current and future industry needs. Using the accumulated knowledge of the first programme, the new training programme has been reduced from nine modules down to five to bring personal safety topics including manual handling, working at height and mechanical lifting into one module. It includes two new sections focused on Major Accident Hazards and Helicopter Safety, as well as revised modules on Workplace Hazards and Personal Safety, Risk
Management and Control of Work. “We have a rich heritage in developing innovative, technology-led safety-critical training specifically designed to meet the exacting standards the global oil and gas sector demands,” said Robert Morgan, chairman of Atlas Knowledge. “Listening to our customers and using their feedback to develop more effective, more engaging and more relevant training is what has made us the first choice for employers in 30 countries and 20 different languages around the world. “This contract marks the continuation of an important relationship for us with OPITO and key industry stakeholders. The collaborative approach towards reviewing and redefining MIST has allowed us to build the best platform from which offshore workers can demonstrate knowledge and understanding of key issues in the most efficient and effective way, including making it accessible via mobiles and tablets. Ultimately, it has been designed to

Siemens Increases Power Output of Direct Drive Offshore Wind Turbine •· •·
Advanced model built on Siemens’ large direct drive platform delivers 7 megawatt New model generates nearly 10 percent more power annually than predecessor
Reliable technology is one of the primary levers in Siemens’ goal to reduce the cost of offshore wind power generation. In this regard, the company’s flagship offshore wind turbine, the SWT-6.0-154, has already set new standards in gearless turbine design. Today, the market leader in offshore raises the bar yet again: Introducing a generator upgrade to seven megawatt (MW), the new Siemens SWT-7.0-154 delivers nearly ten percent more energy production than the predecessor under offshore wind conditions while retaining the same proven reliability: Development engineers have refined solely those turbine components needed to increase electrical output. The new model is already set to go into series production by 2017 Stronger permanent magnets and generator segments in the permanent magnet generator provide the key to harvesting a higher yield. Additionally, the converter and transformer have been upgraded, in line with the higher electrical output: All other components remain the same
tried and proven engineering of the 6-MW wind turbine, giving Siemens’ customers the assurance of relying on proven technology and supply chain while significantly increasing energy production. The 6-MWversion will continue to be available for sales but following the improvements, Siemens has renamed the product platform to D7. Siemens is presenting its new SWT-7.0-154 to the world’s experts at the international wind power conference and exhibition EWEA Offshore 2015 in Copenhagen. The product is yet another innovative step by the company to lower the cost of generating electricity on the high seas. “Our new wind turbine offers our customers an investment as reliable as our proven G4 and D6 product platforms,” notes Offshore CEO Michael Hannibal of Siemens Wind Power and Renewables. “Yet it also answers market demands to achieve greater energy yield at lower cost and effort. Cost reduction through innovation is the key factor of the new turbine and also of new Siemens grid
access solutions. The turbine’s long structural design lifetime of 25 years and increased power rating create a remarkable cost of energy benefit. In transmission, Siemens is pursuing the same goal with its distributed power transmission technology, enabling grid connection of offshore wind turbines without the need for high-voltage alternating-current (HVAC) offshore substations. The conventional platform can be substituted by the new Siemens Grid Access Solution in AC-technology which acts as a distributed transmission asset and can be mounted together with a turbine on the same foundation or independently. This environmentally-friendly solution offers substantially reduced size, weight, and costs, while improving the customer’s flexibility.

Online enquiries Damen Shipyards Group boost in all markets Damen Anchor & Chain Factory completes first online sale Damen Anchor & Chain Factory (AKF), in the Port of Rotterdam, has successfully completed its first online order transaction. Much of the Damen product range has enjoyed an online enquiry option for some time, though AKF is relatively new to the concept. With Damen’s online presence growing constantly, there is a strong potential for future web-based commercial growth. Theo Kloosterman, AKF Manager, explains how the order was swiftly brought to fruition. “It started on February, Friday 13th – a lucky day,” he quipped. “An enquiry came in at the end of the day, asking if we could supply 300 metres of chain and associated components.” Mr Kloosterman quickly confirmed availability of the
required products and, by the following Monday, had put together a quotation for the client – a yacht repair specialist based in Portugal. “The client also sent us some pictures of their anchors, so we were able to advise them on product specifics and fine-tune the order to suit their exact requirements. The total delivery was twelve lengths
of 16mm Grade U2 stud-link anchor chain each measuring 27.5 metres, fourteen kenter shackles, two swivel forerunners, two 3-link adapting pieces, two D-type anchor shackles and two crown shackles, altogether weighing in at 1,780kg.” Online enquiries Only recently AKF began to offer an online enquiry option – following the rest of the Damen product range, which had started to do so 3 years previously. The webbased process is demonstrating clear growth for Damen as a whole according to the company’s online marketing and social media specialist Björn Smets. Mr Smets states that currently, each day brings in strong, qualified online leads. “Online activity has more than tripled since we started,” he says, pointing out that more clients are now aware that they can find Damen products online, thanks to ongoing website development and a robust social media campaign. Damen sees leads coming in from many countries and for many different vessel types. New business Damen’s online presence has often led to the generation of new clients, including the sale of a Fast

Churchill Drilling Tools delivers first HyPR™ HoleSaver™ stuck pipe insurance to operators Churchill Drilling Tools, the provider of innovative Dart Activated Strings™, has announced that the first of its new HyPR™ HoleSaver™ hydraulic pipe recovery systems has been delivered, amidst growing international demand. Two major operators have now selected the cost-saving tool for projects in the North Sea whilst another is planning imminent deployment in the Gulf of Mexico. Encouragingly, some onshore operators have also identified potential scenarios in which the system has applications too. Churchill is recognized for products of trusted quality, simplicity and performance for the oil and gas industry, many of which exploit its Dart Activated Strings™ technology. Director Mike Churchill said: “The first orders for the HyPR™ HoleSaver™ confirm the need for simple technology that lowers the cost of drilling and we are delighted to have received such a positive reaction so quickly.” “An operator who has concerns over stuck pipe can effectively insure against excessive costs by running the HyPR™ HoleSaver™ in the drillstring to recover the program more quickly should things go wrong. The low cost of running the tool, which requires no specialist mobilization, combined with rapid recovery will provide significant
cost reductions in these challenging wells.” The HyPR™ HoleSaver™ consists of a full strength sub positioned in the drillstring, which is severed in approximately one hour. A jetting dart is launched and lands inside the sub and, after a relatively short period of pumping, the sub parts easily under a small loading, offering a perfect fish-neck or immediate side-track cementing options.
