Driving down subsea heavy lift costs with liquid nitrogen With more than 600 installations in the North Sea alone, the energy industry faces a daunting and hugely costly task in terms of decommissioning, with some putting the figure at £30 bn. With this in mind, Deep Sea Recovery Limited has developed its Controllable Buoyancy System (CBS) to help tackle many of the issues associated with decommissioning and other subsea tasks requiring movement of heavy loads through the water column such as renewable energy device installation. When working at great depths, challenges include increasing pressures and decreasing capacity of compressed gas, shortfall in heavy lift vessel (HLV) capacity, remote operation, and increasing cost per tonne. CBS technology is a variable buoyancy system, which uses liquid nitrogen as a subsurface buoyancy gas source, and as the system is reusable, it has the potential to save operators significant costs. At present the only technology available for raising and lowering heavy loads is the HLV crane. CBS could provide a viable alternative, or complementary, technology to assist in cutting costs and improving safety for operators to utilise.Having successfully trialled their first prototype at the National

Hyperbaric Centre in Aberdeen, Scotland, Deep Sea Recovery has proven the ability to control the ascent, descent and hover of the CBS system using liquid nitrogen. CBS uses an integrated cryogenic gas generator within a lifting structure which makes extensive use of advanced composite materials that are both strong and light.Duncan Bates, mechanical engineer and project manager at Deep Sea Recovery, explains: “The industry is inundated with literature detailing the supposed costs of decommissioning and there is a constant drive to find cheaper methods of achieving each and

every step of the process. “If the industry sticks with the current equipment on the market, spiralling costs will be unavoidable. By providing an alternative to the industry in the form of our CBS technology, we can save organisations money, time, and provide a buoyancy system that is clean, scalable and most importantly reusable, significantly driving down operational cost.” Mr. Bates is one of the key speakers at the Centres of Technical Excellence (CoTEs) at the Gastech Conference

Basra Oil & Gas International Conference & Exhibition With proven reserves of around 143 billion barrels, Iraq has the third largest reserves in the world situated across 79 oil and gas fields. Of these fields only 23 are currently producing, and it has only been in recent years that Iraq has administered bids from international and national oil and gas companies to develop these further. he Basra Oil & Gas International Conference & Exhibition, organised by Expotim International Fair Organisation, is now in its third consecutive year. The event has quickly grown to become a staple of the oil and gas calendar, for both regional and international companies, providing a platform for local companies to assess the products and technologies available to them. With more than 400 exhibitors and some 17,000 exhibitors coming from 40 countries around the world, the event has firmly positioned itself on the oil and gas stage as a doorway to Iraq’s plentiful opportunities. As the country continues to issue bids, with one to be confirmed later this year, and with many of the bids being entered through consortiums, the event offers networking and real business advantage.

Event Director Cagatay Ersahin, is expecting the event to attract an even greater international audience this year as the Iraqi oil and gas market opens further. He said, “The bidding process in Iraq has been complex and although the opportunities are vast, there is still a need for the Ministry to highlight the benefits to international industry players and help provide information on what is on offer.” The exploration blocks in Iraq main among some of the world’s last major unexplored territories, presenting a significant opportunity for companies prepared to accept the stringent terms of the Ministry’s contracts. Iraq: the Hub of Future Energy Taking place alongside the exhibition will be a high-level conference, managed by Falah Al-Khawaja, an independent

petroleum and engineering consultant since his retirement from Iraqi Government Energy sector, a career spanning 42 years. The two-day agenda will revolve around the theme ‘Iraq: the hub of future energy’, with sessions covering topics such as expectations of Iraq production capacity in the coming years, drilling & workovers, power and water demand and pipeline networks. The conference will provide the opportunity for delegates to understand more about the landscape of Iraq’s oil and gas fields, as well as hearing from internationally acclaimed experts. Mr. Ersahin continued: “This is an excellent opportunity for the oil and gas industry to gain a much richer understanding of the market in Iraq and expectations for the future. As event organisers, it was important for us to ensure that we provided not only a platform for networking and showcasing products and technologies through the exhibition; but also to utilise the event as a way of sharing knowledge, experience and a way forward for the industry here.”

Exhibition, where he will discuss the technological breakthrough with fellow energy industry leaders within the Offshore & Subsea Technology stream. Now in its 40th year, Gastech has become the world’s leading natural gas events and will this year be held at the ExCeL, London, from 8 - 11 October. The CoTEs exhibition show floor seminars are designed to provide a platform for many of the world’s most-respected industry associations and organisations to deliver knowledge, education and awareness of new innovations and

developments in gas technology. Amanda Basi, the producer of the CoTEs, said: “The impressive speakers we have at the CoTEs at this year’s Gastech highlight the level of interest in the event, and why it’s fast becoming one of the most anticipated conference and exhibitions on the industry calendar. We look forward to welcoming and delivering knowledge and education to visitors and delegates from around the world.” The CoTE seminars will focus on specific areas of interest to those working in the global gas industry, encouraging thoughtprovoking discussion, from a range of high-level speakers over 12 different streams, focused on specific interest areas, from Offshore & Subsea Technology to Unconventional Gas to Carbon Capture & Storage.

Another succesful delivery voyage! On July 31st this year, the new Platform Supply Vessel “NESO II” (2.999 GT and 6.000 BHP) commenced her maiden passage under Nigerian flag from Fujian South-East Shipyard at Mai Wei, Fuzhou, China to Onne, Nigeria. During the passage the vessel was certified for compliance with the ISM and ISPS codes using Redwise’s DOC and operating procedures approved by Class and Flag state for the voyage. The 10.000 mile repositioning passage via Sunda Strait and Cape of Good Hope was

successfully completed well within the pre-agreed transit time, staying clear of the danger areas in the Indian Ocean and using the dedicated convoy to enter the Nigerian River Delta. On September 9th the “NESO II” safely arrived at her home port Onne (Nigeria) only 39 days after leaving China, and was officially handed over to her owners, a business relation going many years back and for whom Redwise earlier transported their fast supply crew vessel NEYA II some 10 years ago.

Meet people, share knowledge at Offshore Energy 2012 The Dutch offshore industry is an international front-runner. The sector adds considerable value to the Dutch economy and has strong potential in generating economic growth. Goof Hamers (CEO, IHC Merwede), Jan-Pieter Klaver (CEO, Heerema Marine Contractors), Frans van Seumeren (Chairman, Rolldock, Roll-lift, Barge Mastger) and other CEOs will discuss the challenges that the industry faces in realizing its full potential during the Offshore Energy Industry Panel on 23 October in Amsterdam RAI. Other confirmed speakers include Gilbert van den Brink (Managing Director, Wintershall) and Bram van Mannekes (former SecretaryGeneral, NOGEPA). The central theme of the program is The offshore sector - A driving force of economic growth. Contributing 1.9 billion euros in added value to the Dutch economy, the offshore sector is one of the largest growth generators of the maritime cluster. The sector is characterized by an overall increase in turnover, production value, added value, export value and employment. To be able to keep adding value to the economy, the industry faces a number of challenges. The sector is in dire need of highly educated people making it increasingly difficult to fill technical positions. Continuous research and innovation are required to maintain and expand the industry's strong international position. Finally - the industry would greatly benefit from consistent energy policy. Offshore Energy Industry Panel, a new feature of Offshore Energy Exhibition & Conference (23 & 24 October, Amsterdam RAI), aims to engage representatives from industry, education, government and politics in an open discussion. Deloitte, the Knowledge Partner for the event, will introduce the themes for the panel. Rens de Jong, presenter of BNR Nieuwsradio, will lead the discussion.

Over 400 exhibitors On 23 & 24 October the fifth edition of Offshore Energy & Conference 2012 will take place at the Amsterdam RAI. Offshore Energy, the fastest growing offshore event in Europe consists of an exhibition where over 400 exhibitors will showcase their products ands services to the world's leading experts and decision makers in the upstream oil, gas and energy industry. "Despite the current economic climate Offshore Energy remains the event offshore companies keep their budget and calendar prepared for", says Anne Visser, event manager for Offshore Energy. "Many companies are committed to this event and we are pleased that we are experiencing considerable growth." Growth that will be much appreciated by the 6,500 expected visitors, 25% of whom are international. Visitors can expect a fully packed 12000 m² exhibition floor, filled with leading (international) firms, including Baker Hughes, Van Oord Offshore, Damen Shipyards Group, GDF Suez Energie Nederland NV, Peterson SBS, Thrustmaster, Keppel Verolme and Schlumberger. Russia laying the foundations for arctic exploration Gas production in Russia could pave the way for successful arctic drilling projects after new techniques helped improve efficiency during the region’s harsh winters. The creation of Russia’s first Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant has meant overcoming a number of obstacles similar to those faced within the Arctic region – an increasingly attractive prospect as proven oil and gas reserves decline. The success of the programme – which has seen the use of “big bore wells” cutting operating costs and increasing gas flow – is an example of how viable working in such harsh conditions can be. Andrei Galaev – chief executive officer (CEO) of Sakhalin Energy Investment Company Ltd., the company running the first Russian LNG plant, which has an 800km network of onshore pipelines. Mr Galaev said: “One of the biggest challenges facing the oil and gas industry is that there are less resources that could be easily developed. More frequently the industry is being forced further north and into drilling deeper to discover and extract hydrocarbons. “It seems almost inevitable that Arctic exploration will take place and there are a lot of similarities between the challenges the industry will face there and what we have been doing at Sakhalin. Certainly the conditions offshore are as harsh as the subarctic ones and the experience Sakhalin Energy gets could be used by those who are looking to develop these barren areas.” As a result of its recent successes, Sakhalin Energy is now becoming one of the leading energy exporters to Asia Pacific’s highly competitive energy market. Now Mr Galaev is preparing to discuss his experiences and the innovative technologies applied in the severe natural and climatic conditions of the remote region with industry leaders at the Gastech Conference & Exhibition. He will take the stage as one of the key speakers at the Centres of Technical Excellence (CoTEs) within the Project Delivery stream, on Monday, 8 October, when he will provide a detailed account of the technological challenges that had to be overcome. The free to attend event will be open to all exhibition attendees, who will be able to hear more about the groundbreaking success of the project for themselves.

He highlighted the importance of ensuring the safety, reliability and integrity of projects, both to

Sakhalin Energy and the industry as a whole as it looks to enter new frontiers. Mr Galaev added: “We conduct our business in an ethically, socially and environmental responsible manner. Atlas launches IMIST in three new languages to improve safety standards in growing South East Asia energy market. Leading international skills and learning providers, Atlas, has announced three new translations of its IMIST programme, now available in nine languages. International Minimum Industry Safety Training (IMIST) is now available in Vietnamese, Thai and Indonesian, which will support the roll out of the global standard in safety across the world. IMIST has been developed by oil and gas training standards body OPITO, delivered in partnership with Atlas via e-learning. Tailored to meet each region’s specific workforce, language and geographic needs, the course assesses basic safety knowledge in nine subject areas, helping the offshore industry meet regulatory compliance obligations,

producing a safer workforce and workplace. The three regions are becoming key areas within the oil and gas industry. According to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), Vietnam ranks third in the AsiaPacific region in proven oil reserves with the country’s oil production set to rise by around 50,000 barrels per day within the next two years. Indonesia is a leading exporter of both coal and natural gas, with the EIA stating the natural gas production in the region has increased by more than a quarter since 2005.

The addition of three new languages to the IMIST programme will further ensure the estimated 1.5million workers employed in exploration and production activities across the world are trained to the same standard throughout the industry, as well as helping improve competency in South East Asia.

According to Oil & Gas Thailand expo 2012, the only specialised event in the region, Thailand’s Map Ta Phut industrial complex has grown into one of the world’s biggest petrochemical hubs housing all the main refineries.

Opnieuw primeur voor Sail Den Helder 2013!

Os to discuss how Dutch offshore n maintain front-runner position potential during the Offshore Energy Industry Panel on 23 October in Amsterdam RAI. Other confirmed speakers include Frans van Seumeren (Chairman, Rolldock, Roll-lift, Barge Master), Gilbert van den Brink (Managing Director, Wintershall) and Bram van Mannekes (former SecretaryGeneral, NOGEPA). Mark Dierikx, Director-General Energy of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs has been invited to join the discussion. The central theme of the program is The offshore sector - A

driving force of economic growth. The sector is in dire need of highly educated people making it increasingly

difficult to fill technical positions. Continuous research and innovation are required to maintain and expand the industry's strong international position. Finally - the industry would greatly benefit from consistent energy policy. The first ever Industry Panel aims to engage representatives from industry, education, government and politics in an open discussion. Deloitte, the Knowledge Partner for the event, will introduce the themes for the panel. The discussion is led by Rens de Jong, presenter of BNR Nieuwsradio.

Icota europe and spe aberdeen search for the next energy apprentice The Intervention & Coiled Tubing Association (ICoTA) European Chapter and SPE Aberdeen are on the hunt for the next generation of energy leaders by offering innovative school pupils in the area the chance to impress industry experts in a new competition. The competition, entitled The Energy Apprentice, sets a challenge to pupils from Cults, Kemnay, Dyce and Westhill Academies to devise a smart and sustainable idea for the oil and gas sector and to present it before a panel of industry representatives. Presentations will be held in advance of the 18th SPE ICoTA European Well Intervention Conference, entitled ‘Delivering more for less’, at the AECC in Aberdeen on November 14 and 15. For the inaugural competition, two schools from Aberdeen City and two from Aberdeenshire were invited to take part. However it is hoped that more will join in future for what will become an annual event. Speaking of the competition ICoTA Chairman

Callum Munro said: “Contrary to some opinions, the future of the oil industry is secure, however it is our responsibility to ensure that it remains that way and that is what we are aiming to do with The Energy Apprentice. “By planning for the future and giving a new generation the chance to learn and think about the industry in a fun and constructive environment we hope to show these young people what an exciting and fulfilling sector energy can be to work in, as well as getting their insights into what it may look like in the years ahead.” As well as being a learning exercise for the participants, both ICoTA and SPE Aberdeen hope that the event will ignite

imagination and forward thinking amongst pupils as it aims to keep the North East at the centre of technological innovation in the oil and gas industry. With the winning team members will each receive an IPad and a 3D printer for their school, both ICoTA and SPE Aberdeen expect strong competition between the schools. Ross Lowdon, vice chair of SPE Aberdeen’s schools and career guidance committee, said: “This competition aims to build long lasting links between schools and industry and encourage an interest in the next generation of oil and gas workers. We want them to see the appeal of working in this industry, and to develop the skills required to succeed. “SPE Aberdeen is excited to host this event alongside ICoTA and we are looking forward to some innovative and intelligent ideas to come from these young, creative minds.”

Keeping the network stable: Siemens launches automatic load shedding system for power grids in the oil and gas industry Siemens Infrastructure & Cities has developed an automatic load shedding system for the power supply of large-scale industrial plants, helping to stabilize the networks in critical situations. Siemens has integrated the "automatic load shedding" function into the Sicam station control system and into Siprotec protection equipment. The solution is based on a distributed architecture and the IEC 61850 communication standard. The first systems are being launched for use in the oil and gas industry where in many cases industrial networks are installed that supply power to complex production processes without being connected to the public grid (island networks). If sufficient power is not available,

the load shedding automatically shuts down low-priority loads and restores the balance between power generated and power consumed, enabling uninterrupted operation of high-priority core processes. In the oil and gas industry, power is often supplied to the systems extracting and processing the oil and natural gas from island networks that are not connected to the public grid.

Instead from island networks power also can be supplied from networks which are capable for islanding and connected to the public grid, but detachable by demand. This is the case in refineries and liquefied gas production as well as with oil and gas storage facilities or petrochemical systems. The stability of these networks is of considerable importance because an island grid is not supplied by a larger network in the event of failure and also because any disruption to the production processes in the oil and gas industry usually has major financial consequences. Siemens has

developed the automatic load shedding solution to maintain stable voltage and frequency levels in industrial networks. If critical events occur in the network such as an overload situation or a generator trip, the control and protection system detects the imbalance between the power generated and the power consumed and shuts down low-priority loads. The resulting power boost stabilizes the network and ensures that there is no interruption to the production processes. A balance of the active power is calculated continuously so that the load is only reduced by the required amount. GOOSE messages (Generic Object Oriented Substation Events) defined in the IEC 61850 communication standard provide an immediate response to the automatic load shed. The messages are transmitted very quickly via Ethernet with high priority, enabling response times of the load shedding function of less than 70 milliseconds. Automatic load shedding is divided up into three areas: fast load shedding, dynamic power-based load shedding and frequency-based load shedding. In the case of fast power-based load shedding (FPLS), low-priority loads are shut down when the network is separated from a public grid or in the event of generator failure.

station control system. Independently of the FPLS and DPLS load shedding functions, frequency-based load shedding (FBLS) is tripped whenever the frequency of the power supply falls below a certain threshold. Frequency-based load shedding constitutes a reserve function that is also triggered when multiple faults occur simultaneously in the network and prevents an unwanted drop in frequency. Manual load shedding is also possible via the Sicam 230 station operation of the Siemens control system. Sicam 230 also generates the topological calculation which helps to detect when the network breaks up into several subnets which can be taken into account by the automatic load shedding system. The topological calculation is of particular interest because it is configured graphically and works procedurally without the need for any extensive project-specific Boolean logic. Energy-efficient, eco-friendly solutions for setting up intelligent power supply networks (Smart Grids) are part of Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2011, revenue from the portfolio totalled nearly EUR30 billion, making Siemens one of the world’s largest suppliers of eco-friendly technologies.

A R T X E A R T The remaining loads in the power supply system are fed by local generators. Dynamic power-based load shedding (DPLS) provides sufficient power reserve in an island network. The power reserve level is set by the operator via the

In the same period, the company’s products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by nearly 320 million tons, an amount equal to the total annual CO2 emissions of Berlin, Delhi, Hong Kong, Istanbul, London, New York, Singapore and Tokyo.

President Vladimir Putin has reiterated commitments to making investment and private ownership of energy interests inRussia more accessible, pledging his administration will “not standin the way” of opportunities for foreign investors to buy stakes in the national energy industry. -

The Russian government is also currently closely involved in discussions with the European Commission in a bid to cement energy ties until 2050, with Russia the EU’s single largest natural gas supplier – but appreciates that growing demand from Asia means a commitment to delivering LNG export potential is also now a top priority.
