To Dance with Dakinis
Dena Merriam
Dena Merriam began working in the interfaith movement in the late 1990s when she served as Vice Chair of the Millennium World Peace Summit of Religious and Spiritual Leaders held at the United Nations in New York in 2000.
She subsequently convened a meeting of women religious and spiritual leaders at the Palais des Nations in Geneva and, from that gathering, founded the Global Peace Initiative of Women (GPIW) in 2002, an organization chaired by a multifaith group of women spiritual leaders.
Dakinis, being associated with energy in all its functions, are linkedwiththerevelationofthe AnuttaraYogaTantrasorHigher Tantras, which represent the pathoftransformation.
OMTimes: How did this story come to you? Was it a surprise for you to find yourself in Tibet?
Dena Merriam: Most books come to life through an opportune encounter with a person or place that ignites my imagination. It's as though the universe conspires to reveal stories hidden within the fabric of reality, waiting for someone to unravel them. Such was the case with "To Dance with Dakinis."
The journey began with a simple conversation with my grandson, whose innocent inquiries about Tibet sparked a cascade of memories within me. Memories that had long lain dormant, buried beneath the weight of time and distance. Suddenly, I was transported back to the mystical landscapes of Tibet, a land of ancient wisdom and spiritual mysteries.
But what caught me off guard was the revelation of my unexpected connection to the indigenous religion of Tibet—Bon. It was as if the echoes of centuries past had summoned me to rediscover a part of myself I never knew existed. The rich tapestry of Bon's teachings and traditions became a guiding light on my literary odyssey, leading me deeper into the heart of Tibetan spirituality.
As I delved into the intricacies of Bon, I found myself drawn to its profound philosophy and profound practices, each revelation adding another layer to the narrative taking shape within my mind. Through meditation and introspection, the story unfolded organically, weaving together threads of personal discovery and cultural exploration.
And so, "To Dance with Dakinis" emerged from the depths of my consciousness, a testament to the power of connection and the transformative journey of self-discovery. Ultimately, it was not just a book but a reflection of my spiritual quest, a dance with the divine beings that inhabit the realms beyond our comprehension.
OMTimes: In this book, you describe three successive lives trying to show the law of cause and effect. Has this made you look at your current life differently? Tell us a little more about that.
Dena Merriam: Through my writings, I've embarked on a journey of self-discovery that has profoundly deepened my understanding of the law of cause and effect, significantly influencing how I perceive and live my life. Exploring this concepthasmademerealizetheprofound impact our actions can have on our lives andthosearoundus.
It has transformed the way I approach my relationships, especially when faced with challenges.Insteadofsimplyreactingtoconflictsor disagreements, I now take a step back to analyze theunderlyingcausesandeffectsatplay.
This introspective approach allows me to identify areaswhereIcanimproveandtakeproactivesteps to address any issues that may arise. Rather than letting troubled relationships fester or deteriorate, I've learned to invest time and effort into finding solutions and resolving difficulties. This might involve open and honest communication, seeking compromise, or even seeking outside help if necessary. By actively working to mend and strengthentheserelationships,I'vefoundthatIcan cultivate deeper connections and greater harmony inmylife.
OMTIMESOMTimes:Whatareyourfeelingsabout Tibettoday?
Dena Merriam: The story of Tibet stretches far beyond its past and current struggles. While challenges and occupation have marked its history, the narrative of Tibet's sovereignty is far from concluded. It's a tale with many chapters yet to be written, each waiting to be filled with its people's resilience, determination, andunwaveringspirit.
I firmly believe that Tibet will one day reclaim its rightful place as a sovereign nation, standing tall and proud among the world's countries. However, the question of when this will come to fruition remains uncertain, bound by the intricate workings ofkarmaanddestiny.
TheoccupationofTibetbyexternalforces was not merely a geopolitical event but a reflection of deeper karmic conditions at play. These conditions, shaped by individuals' and nations' collective actions and intentions, have cast a shadow over Tibet's sovereignty for decades. Yet, as the wheel of karma turns, so too do opportunities for resolution and transformationemerge.
The outer conditions of Tibet will begin to shift through the reconciliation of these karmic imbalances. This process requires external actions, inner reflection, and spiritual growth. For the outer world is but a reflection of the inner landscape, and true change can only manifest when the seedsoftransformationaresownwithin. the collective consciousness of humanity to recognize the interconnectedness of all beings and the inherent dignity and rights oftheTibetanpeople.
But let us not lose sight of the resilience andcouragethatdefinetheTibetanspirit.
OMTimes: How does the past shape whooneistoday?
Dena Merriam: Our past shapes our present in many ways. We carry with us from one life to the next unresolved relationships as well as beautiful friendships. We carry patterns of thinking and behavior, aspirations and desires that have not been met, and so on. All of our present life's conditions are due to what we have created in the past. We have createdourpresent.
OMTimes| March 2024
OMTimes: You have written a lot about the past. Do you have any thoughts on thefuture?
Dena Merriam: I am writing a book titled Memories of a Future Life, in which I project myself two hundred years into the future. Just as our past created our present conditions, our presentsettheblueprintforthefuture.
OMTimes: What are the elements in thesepastlivesthataffectwhoyouare today?
Dena Merriam: In the past, I have struggled to resolve different religious traditions. In my present life, I am a leader in the interfaith movement. This is a result of these efforts from the past. In the past, I struggled to find my voice as a woman. I have been able to
OMTimes: Meditation, compassion, and studying ancient wisdom were the pillarsofTibet'sspiritualstrength. How can the ordinary person approach thesewaystogrowspiritually?
Dena Merriam: Some spiritual practice is essential. I practice meditation. For others, it might be prayer or mantra, repeating a sacred name. But meditation is only half the battle. The otherhalfistheattitudeonecarriesinto the day – remaining positive, attentive to one's mental state, etc. Inner reflectionispartofspiritualpracticeas it helps highlight what one needs to workon.
OMTimes: What is the main lesson or themethattouchedyouthemostabout
Dena Merriam: I received many lessons through the writing, but one of the main messages is that love is the foundation of all. One must aspire toward that higherunconditional, inclusivelove, whichalonebrings truehappiness.
OMTimes: What is a dakini? It seems from your writingthattheyarefemalefigureswhohelpaseeker deepentheirspiritualrealization.Wouldwebeableto recognize Dakinis in this day and age in Tibet? Outside Tibet? Why is the feminine energy of a dakini important for spiritual practice for both men and women? You write much about the Goddess in this book. Can you speak more about the Goddess and howtoinvitethisenergyintoourlives?
DenaMerriam: Dakinisarefemalebeingsofthehigher realm. They can take physical form. All the ancient traditions recognized the Goddess, Devi, or feminine formoftheDivineReality.Wecanattuneourselvesto this feminine aspect of the Divine to balance the masculine energy. The universe is about balance. The lawofkarmaisforthesakeofregainingthisbalance.
Bringing the power of the feminine is also about regainingbalance.
We carry with us from one life to the next unresolved relationships as well as beautiful friendships.
OMTimes: Whatdoyouthinkaboutthe current situation in Tibet, where it is under the sovereign of a powerful communist regime, millions of Tibetans died, and more than 6000 monasteries weredestroyed?Howcouldsuchathing happen?Whatdoyouthinkwilloccurin thefutureinTibet?
Dena Merriam: The complex karmic conditions of Tibet led to the current situation, and the spiritual practice of manyTibetansandfriendsofTibetwill help change the current conditions. Tibet will be free when the karmic conditions are ripe – when the dharma is purely reflected in the minds and actionsofmany.

Transcendental Meditation and the Opioid Epidemic
Comedian Russell Brand explains: “The reason I became a drug addict is that throughout my life I felt this sense of irritation, agitation, this emptiness…
I found every progressive drug: cannabis, LSD, crack, heroin. Each of them is greeted as tiny little powdery prophets, solutions to the problem of my inner angst. None of them work.”
Today we have a crisis in drug addiction care: less than one in five Americans with drug abuse problems receive any help. Little do they know, all the rest can get rapid, available, effective and affordable tools to escape these painful, costly and even life-threatening attachments.
According to SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 20.1 million people (7.7 percent of the U.S. population) aged 12 or older needed treatment for an illicit drug or alcohol use problem in 2016. Only 3.8 million (19 percent of those who needed treatment) received any substance use treatment in the same year.
According to US News in December 2016, the Surgeon General reported that in 2015 the United States had a staggering 442 billion dollar loss to its national economy from drug and alcohol abuse.
According to the National Institutes of Health, the average treatment (for veterans) for substance abuse costs $3,754 with a 75.0% chance of being effective.
discomfort; some athletes use drugs to enhance performance; others take up drugs out of curiosity. For whatever reason one tries and becomes addicted to drugs, the addiction is considered a brain disorder that can change the structure of the brain and how it works, according to the National Institute of Drug Abuse
If one has been in a traumatic event, drug and alcohol “selfmedication” often accompanies Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It can also be understood as one of the symptoms of PTSD. (For more stories and information on our projects to reduce the pandemic of PTSD across Africa, go to www.ptsdreliefnow.org )
Some people start drugs for a new “high,” others to overcome pain or
Without support, drug addiction often leads to harmful behaviors and mental and physical health debilitation. The Surgeon General explained that “Neighborhoods and communities as a whole are also suffering as a result of alcohol- and drug-related crime and violence, abuse and neglect of children, and the increased costs of health care associated with substance misuse.”
According to the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse the 20% who do get support use a variety of approaches:
• behavioral counseling
• m edication
• m edical devices and applications used to treat withdrawal symptoms or deliver skills training
• evaluation and treatment for cooccurring mental health issues such as depression and anxiety
• lon g-term follow-up to prevent relapse
The goals of these approaches are first to become drug-free, then stay
drug-free, and over the long-run be a happy and productive member of family and society.
There are many complementary and alternative (CAM) approaches that with help change the quality of life and achieve the above goals… including exercise, diet, and better patterns of sleep. Other common approaches are special diets, probiotics, and mineral and vitamin supplements, breathing exercises, and acupuncture.
However, what is first needed, before standard treatments or CAM, is a tool that directly allows
the addict to experience clearer thinking, discriminating and feeling. This process gives control back to the addict to then be able to take control over his or her life and act in a way that leaves him or her not only “feeling” in control of his or her life, but actually creating a life that then works for them to create a more powerful and productive future. It gives him or her greater purpose in life and a direction to start living a more fulfilling life.
Transcendental Meditation is one such evidence-based way to do this. Having gained more control,
the individual can choose useful tools to change his or her lifestyle to substitute positive activities for drug or alcohol addiction habits. He or she may also choose to receive psychological counseling and pharmacology to support this change in patterns of behavior.
A 2007 study showed that the most commonly used CAM approaches were natural products, breathing exercises and meditation, according to the NIH Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.
One effective, evidence-based meditation for drug abuse reduction
is Transcendental Meditation. ( www.TM.org )
Transcendental Meditation (TM), has been taught the same systematic way over the past 60 years and is now practiced by over 7 million people in every country around the world. TM is a simple, effortless mental technique that employs the principle of rest and release of stress. The meditator experiences quieter, more silent and more restful levels of thinking, and
the body gains profound rest and release of fatigue and stress. With increasing coherence of mind due to more silent and orderly thinking gained in meditation, after meditation, the practitioner has more freedom from the influence of past decisions, and he or she can then more easily choose to stop the destructive behaviors of drug and alcohol abuse.
Over ten peer-reviewed studies (TM.org and then go to addictions link) show that TM produces a very
significant reduction in drug and alcohol abuse. For example, one meta-analysis of 70 drug rehab study results (Alcohol Treatment Quarterly, 11: 13-88) showed that TM was significantly more effective than either peer support or prevention education.
Russell Brand comments:
“The thing is that what I have learned, what I was looking for all the time, was a sense of union, a sense of connection.
Why for us is there the subsequent misery? Because for us these flimsy scraps are never going to be enough. We want the real connection. We want the absolute connection. Moreover, the thing is that connection exists. And, it’s possible to find it. Moreover, it’s possible that you could find it now. First, you have to remove the chemicals and the substances. You have to get rid of them. I believe in abstinencebased recovery. I believe in harm reduction when necessary to get you to abstinence-based recovery,
but I believe that if you are a drug addict of the nature that I am, you have to remove drugs from your life.
Transcendental Meditation (TM) will give you access to peace. It will give you access to a (new) consciousness that is not entirely defined by yourself and your conditions as you understand them. It will give you sanctuary and
serenity. That is what it’s done for me. An integral part of my life as a recovering drug addict is TM.”
Russell Brand risked his career and his life with drug dependence and addiction. Twenty-three million Americans suffer each year from drug and alcohol abuse. Only one in five gets treatment. Here are available, affordable, and effective tools to help
people around the world suffering from drug and alcohol dependence and addiction take control of their drug and alcohol intake for a clearer, more effective and happier life.
As Russell Brand said: “Through TM I felt this beautiful serenity and selfless connection. There are those with great privilege and luxuries that can have access through TM, but there are people who are in extreme states of suffering who can benefit from it too.”

The Multivagal System: A New Paradigm of Safety
The Multivagal System is a new paradigm. It integrates the Vagus nerveabovetherespiratorydiaphragm with the Vagus nerve below the respiratory diaphragm. The vagus nerve is a critically important physiologicalandmetabolicpartofthe autonomic nervous system (ANS) in the middle of the human body. It is a superhighway of information with four lanesgoingupanddownthemiddleof the body. It is 80% sensory and 20% motor.

It is also called thetenthcranialnerve(X)sinceitis the tenth pair of a total of twelve pairs of cranial nerves. Not only does it have a right and left side, but each side also has two sites of origination, thus making it four nervesinone, twoemergingonthe leftandtwoontheright.
Social Safety
Emotional Safety
Theheartrepresentsemotionalsafety, adeep safety, integrating three levels:at a metabolic level (molecular exchange of 02), at the physiological level of the SES (behavior), and at a spiritual level (loving kindness and compassion). Thus, emotional safety is spiritual safety. Spiritual safety is vital to our health and well-being. The basic phenomenological experience of the heart is one of vulnerability. This simply means that everyonehasasoft, flexible, tenderspotinthe front of their heart derived from embryonic development.Theheartisdesignedtobeable to expand, especially the anterior portion that connects with the sternum. It is part of the natural and normal biology of the heart. The heartneedstobesoftandflexibleinfront, and this produces sensations of vulnerability while itisfirmerposteriorly.
Safety is the most fundamental principle of the MultivagalSafetySystem.ThetermSocialSafety is what Stephan Porges calls neuroception. This is the way in which the brain interprets social signals from other people, especially their faces, postures, and movements, as safe or not. Neuroception is determining people's safety. Are people safe to be in a relationship with? At the neurological level, neuroception is largely unconscious but it can trigger significant physiological changes, especially in the heart. Neuroception is determined by the Social EngagementSystem(SES)whichinvolvesfacial expressions, the eyes and hearing. Facial cues constantly give information to the brain via the Vagus.
Vulnerability is not weakness or thelackofboundaries, butrather, it is associated with openness, confidenceandauthenticitywhen felt consciously and nonjudgmentally.
The heart also has a very exquisite pleasure capacity stemming from positive social engagement with other people, which raises vagal tone (feelgood experiences that stabilize andlowerheartrate).
Metabolic Safety
Thisheart-pleasuresystemisfurther integrated with one's sexuality, including arousal and orgasm. The Vagus nerve transports pleasure information from the pelvis (via the hypogastric nerves) up through the abdominal aortic ANS plexi to the heart and brain. The transport of pleasure and relief via specific hormones such as oxytocin and neurotransmittersisaveryimportant function of the Vagus nerve and an important experience of the heart. Joy and happiness are associated with this pleasure system, as are healthandwell-being.

Vagal Maneuvers
One of the most popular vagal maneuvers is a broad category of breathing techniques such as Eliot Cohen's coherent breathing, six seconds of inhalation, and six secondsofexhalation.

Belly breathing consists of filling the lower lobes of the lungs first and feeling the umbilicusexpandoutduringtheinhalationand fall back naturally during the exhalation. Another type of vagal maneuver with belly breathing is inhaling into the abdomen for X amount of seconds, pursing the lips, and exhaling for X amount of seconds. These breathingtechniquescanbepracticedfor5to 20 minutes and generally stretch the Vagus nerve, especially its connections in the respiratory diaphragm. Vagal maneuvers are designed to create inner safety and improve vagaltoneandheartratevariability.

Exploring Tui Na
Massage: A Traditional Chinese Healing Art
Tui Na massage, also known as Chinese therapeutic massage, is a form of manual therapy or
bodywork that has been practiced in China for over 3,000 years. This ancient healing art is deeply rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
and has been used to treat various physical and emotional ailments.
The term "Tui Na" is derived from the Mandarin words "tui" which means to push and "na" which means to grasp. Together, they describe the primary techniques used in this form of massage – pushing and grasping. These techniques, along with others such as kneading, rolling, and pressing, are applied to the body's meridians and acupoints to promote balance and flow of Qi, or vital energy.
Tui Na massage has evolved over centuries, and various family styles have emerged, each with their unique techniques and approaches. Here are some of the prominent family styles of Tui Na:
1. Lingnan Style: Originating from the Guangdong province of China, Lingnan style focuses on soft tissue manipulation and joint mobilization techniques. It is known for its gentle yet effective approach to addressing musculoskeletal issues.
2. Tai Chi Style: This style combines Tui Na with principles taken from Tai Chi and Qigong. The practitioner uses slow and fluid movements,
employing the practitioner's own body weight to apply pressure and create a harmonious flow of energy.
3. Wu Style: Developed by Wu Longxiu, this style emphasizes pushing and rolling techniques to stimulate the body's energy channels and balance Yin and Yang. Wu-style Tui Na incorporates specialized hand techniques and can be quite vigorous.
4. Zhang Style: Created by Dr. Zhang Jie, this style integrates Tui Na with acupuncture and physical therapy. The emphasis is on precise acupoint manipulation and deep tissue techniques to promote healing and relieve pain.
5. Bao Style: Bao style Tui Na focuses on the joints and skeleton, using techniques such as traction, rotation, and stretching to restore optimal alignment and mobility. This style is particularly beneficial for treating spinal and joint conditions.
Now, let's explore five self-explanatory Tui Na techniques that you can practice for self-care:
1. Pushing technique (Tui Fa): Place your palm flat on the targeted area and press gently as you push away. This technique is useful for stimulating blood and energy flow and relieving tension in the muscles.
2. Grasping technique (Na Fa):
Use your thumb, fingers, or palm to grip tightly and then release repeatedly on the area of concern. This technique helps to relieve
muscle knots and promote the circulation of Qi and blood.
3. Kneading technique (Mo Fa): Use your knuckles, fingertips, or palms to press and knead the muscles in a circular motion. This technique is great for loosening tight muscles and improving blood circulation.
4. Rolling technique (Gun Fa): Use the heel of your hand or forearm to roll firmly along the length of
a muscle or a meridian. Rolling can help to stretch the muscles, relieve tension, and promote relaxation.
5. Percussion technique (Da Fa): Use your palms, fingertips, or fists to lightly tap or drum on the area being treated. This technique is invigorating and can help stimulate circulation and energize the body.
Helpful tip: It can be helpful to apply these techniques using some
Chinese massage oil such as UI oil, Black Ghost oil, or Po Sum On oil. You can also use a towel or sheet underneath your grip as not to pull the hairs on the arms or legs while kneading or grasping.
Helpful tip: If trying these techniques on someone, be sure to position your body so that you are directly over the area you are working on in order to preserve your posture.
Helpful tip: Working along the Chinese meridian lines can be beneficial to the treatment. A simple fact to remember is that the twelve major meridians are energy lines that map the entire body running from the crown of the head to the base of the feet. They run on each side of the body, one side mirroring the other.
Remember, when practicing Tui Na techniques on yourself, it's important to start slowly and gently apply pressure. Gradually increase intensity as your body becomes accustomed to the techniques. If you have any existing health conditions or concerns, it is advisable to consult with a qualified Tui Na practitioner or healthcare
professional before attempting selfmassage.
Tui Na massage offers a holistic approach to healing and wellness, combining physical manipulation with the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Whether received in a professional setting or practiced at home for self-care, Tui Na can help
restore balance and promote overall well-being.

What It Means to “Die” and to “Wake Up”
Dr. Rajiv Parti, MD, and the Lessons of His Near-Death Experience By Paul PerryIhave written a dozen books on near-death experiences (NDEs), four of which are New York Times bestsellers. The subject of NDEs is one I’m devoted to, and as a result I am constantly in contact with
researchers in the field of near death studies as well as those who have had the experience.
NDEs are extraordinary. The idea of leaving one’s body at the point of
death, traveling to a Heavenly realm and seeing beloved relatives who have passed, is truly the hero’s journey of our modern age. People who could have died are now kept alive with technology and medicine that didn’t exist just a few years ago. It is because of those advances that the threshold of death is pushed back and NDEs become deeper and the stories richer.
It is these stories that may eventually answer mankind’s greatest question: What happens when we die?
Which brings us to Dr. Rajiv Parti, former chief of anesthesiology at Bakersfield Heart Hospital. His is most likely the best NDE I have ever heard, not just for the experience itself, but for the transformation it led to.
In 2008 Rajiv Parti, MD, was Chief of Anesthesiology at Heart Hospital in Bakersfield, California. He derived his identity and happiness from the incredible amount of wealth and prestige his job gave him. He lived in a mansion, had several luxury cars, and was able to purchase most any material goods he wanted.
In August of that year - everything changed. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer. A routine surgery to treat it, in the same month, led to complications that left him incontinent and in excruciating pain. He was forced back into surgery three times between Aug and Dec 2008.
The cancer was gone now, but he was living in pain; impotent, incontinent and wearing diapers. He was prescribed pain meds and soon learned firsthand that his body had a quick dependency on pain medication. He became an addict and within time was diagnosed with depression, too.
On December 14, 2010, he went to UCLA Medical Center for the surgical placement of an artificial urinary sphincter. In the days after this surgery he became very sick, running a fever of 104-105. He could not urinate and his pelvic area was red and swollen. Heavy antibiotics were prescribed, but he was not getting better.
For some reason this made him feel invincible.
Ten days later, Christmas Eve 2010, Dr Parti was admitted to the emergency ward of the UCLA
hospital for severe infection and fever. Emergency surgery was called for immediately to drain the pelvic region of infection and remove the artificial sphincter. His last waking memory had been the searing pain of a catheter being inserted in him to drain his urinary bladder.
His next memory was of no longer being in his body. He had been given anesthesia, but instead of being “put out” in the traditional sense, Dr. Parti was outside of his body.
It was here, dying and heavily anesthetized, that he “woke up.”
Although deeply asleep from anesthesia, he was very aware that his consciousness had separated from his body. From a vantage point near the ceiling he could see the surgeon cut him and then all of the operating room personnel react as the odor of the pus from his infected abdomen seeped throughout the room. He saw a nurse apply eucalyptus-scented water
to the surgical masks of everyone performing the operation. He even heard the anesthesiologist tell a joke so dirty that he blushed when he later told it to the anesthesiologist in the recovery room.
Dr. Parti’s senses became so acute in this out-of-body state that he could hear, see and smell things outside of the operating room. He then left the operating room and began to drift toward familiar voices in India, where he could hear his mother and sister
talking about dinner preparations for that night. They finally decided to have rice, vegetables, yogurt and legumes. He could see that it was foggy and frigid that night, and since there was no central heating in the house, they were bundled up to protect from the cold. A small electric heater glowed, helping to take the chill out of the room.
Rather than being fearful, Dr. Parti became euphoric. People are never far away, he thought. He had the
sense of his presence spreading around the world, a feeling of oneness with the world and everyone in it.
Fear found its way into the situation. He had the feeling of being pulled into a bleak darkness, one that was filled with the screams and sounds of fighting.
His awareness drifted from the physical world of the operating theater in Los Angeles and the kitchen conversation in India to
a place where a great wild fire was raging. He could see lightning in dark clouds and smell the odor of burning meat. He realized that an unseen force was pulling him into Hell, leaving him “in the midst of souls who were screaming and suffering.”
What is my Karma, he wondered. What did I do in my life or past life to deserve this punishment?
In the middle of this horror, Dr. Parti began to have the strong awareness
that the life he was living was very materialistic: His life was always about him. So much so, in fact, that when he met new people Dr. Parti asked himself, “What can I get from this person?”
The truth dawned on him there in Hell: that the life he was living on earth was without love. He was not practicing compassion or forgiveness towards himself or others. He also had an unsavory tendency to be harsh towards people he perceived to be lower than
him in social or professional status. He felt deeply sorry for the lack of kindness in his behavior, wishing he could have done certain things in his life differently. As soon as he had that realization, Hell faded away.
There is a lot more to the NDE itself than I have space to cover here. You can read it in its complete form in our book, DYING TO WAKE UP: A Doctor’s Voyage into the Afterlife and the Wisdom he Brought Back (Atria Books) . As Raymond
Moody, MD, the father of neardeath studies, wrote in this book’s foreword, “(Dr. Parti’s NDE) is one of the most astounding and complete near-death experiences I have heard in almost fifty years of investigating this phenomenon. It is powerful even to a veteran researcher like myself…. (it is) one of transcendence and transformation.”
These two elements, transcendence and transformation, are what interests me most
in near-death experiences. In the research I have done and studied, I rarely meet a person who their NDE hasn’t transformed. These people become kinder, gentler versions of the person they were before their NDE. Sometimes this change is so complete that they are no longer recognizable. That has been the case with Dr. Parti. His brush with death opened an entirely new world to him –an otherworld if you will – that
replaced the materialistic world he had so carefully constructed.
Now he is following the words his late father told him when they reunited during the near-death experience: “If you keep your consciousness clear and be truthful to yourself, the universe and the divine will take care of you.”
Raj has changed his medical specialty from anesthesiology to mind-based healing, in which he
uses the principles of healing taught to him by those he met on the other side. His goal? “To become a healer of the soul, especially the disease of the soul, of the energy body, addiction, depression, chronic pain and cancer.”
He is now accomplishing his final transformation. He and his wife, Arpana have moved to Soquel, California, where he will soon open a clinic dedicated to consciousnessbased healing. He has truly become transformed by the light.
Karma, Dharma, and Friendships
By Humanity HealingThe Interplay of Destiny and Free Will in Friendships
Karma and Dharma, often misunderstood in Western culture, are deeply interconnected concepts that reflect the intricate relationship between destiny
and free will. Karma is frequently misconstrued as a force associated exclusively with negative outcomes or as a form of retribution. Dharma, less familiar in the West, remains an elusive concept for many.
These principles offer a profound understanding of how individual choices shape our destiny, intertwining with the broader theme of free will.
Souls have different journeys. The best thing to know is not what everybody else does but what you do. Self-discovery essentially is finding your own Dharma, your own rhythm.
Frederick LenzTHE DYNAMICS OF DESTINY AND FREE WILL
Our paths are often attributed to destiny, yet we overlook the fundamental truth that we are the architects of our journey. This recognition is a testament to the divine's greatest act of love, granting us the autonomy to embrace or diverge from our Earthly missions, regardless of their significance.
The gift of freedom, entailing responsibility for our actions and their consequences, is a profound blessing. How we exercise this freedom dictates our life's trajectory, leading us toward either turmoil or enlightenment. Misguided decisions, made in denial of our true path, often lead to frustration, whereas peace is found in
actions aligned with our inner truth. Ultimately, we control our destiny, linking our Earthly purpose with the consequences of our choices.
DHARMA: THE PATH OF VIRTUE
Dharma represents the virtuous path of truth and natural law. It is akin to a realm where light and virtue flow effortlessly. Understanding and living one's Dharma means embracing the Universe's destiny or mission.
Those who walk the path of Dharma experience a life marked by peace, grace, and natural ease, reminiscent of an artist whose brush strokes are as instinctive as breathing.
KARMA: THE LAW OF ACTION AND CONSEQUENCE
Contrary to popular belief, Karma is not a malevolent force but a fundamental law complementing Dharma. It is often misunderstood in the same way that free will is, with people mistakenly attributing their life's challenges to destiny rather than their own choices.
Karma, in essence, is the law of action and consequence. It is not punitive
but rather reflective of the outcomes of our decisions. Karma determines our proximity to or divergence from our Dharma, with balanced, enlightened choices guiding us closer to our true path.
EXPANDING THE UNDERSTANDING OF KARMA AND DHARMA
In a broader context, Karma and Dharma serve as guides, steering us through the complexities of life. They remind us that our actions, thoughts, and intentions have far-
reaching effects, shaping our current existence and influencing our spiritual journey across lifetimes.
In its principle, Dharma is about aligning with one's true purpose, living in harmony with the universal laws, and contributing positively to the world. It encourages us to find and follow our unique path with integrity and authenticity.
On the other hand, Karma acts as a mirror reflecting the quality of our choices. It encompasses not just the physical actions but also
the subtleties of our thoughts and emotions. Understanding Karma leads to a deeper awareness of cause and effect, encouraging mindful living and decision-making that honors our true selves and the world around us.
Together, these concepts form a dynamic interplay, shaping the tapestry of our lives. They offer a roadmap for personal growth and spiritual evolution, reminding us of our power in crafting our destinies through our choices. By embracing the principles of Karma and Dharma, we embark on a journey of self-
discovery and transformation, ultimately finding a deeper connection with the Universe and our place within it.
FRIENDSHIPS THAT SEEM TO BE FROM PAST LIVES
Throughout our lives, we encounter many extraordinary personalities. However, there are those special few whose impact transcends time and space. Some inexplicable friendships seem to originate from past lives, such as the depth of trust and dedication towards each other. This intriguing
and profound feeling suggests a deeper connection of spirits, allowing for a possible reunion across lifetimes.
THE NATURE OF FRIENDSHIP ACROSS LIVES
The role of friends in human existence is undeniably crucial. Our social interactions and connections ignite energy that propels both body and mind. Yet, experiencing life with exceptional individuals enriches personal development, making it more vital and exhilarating.
True friends can emerge at any stage of our lives, from childhood through to later years. The strength and love in a friendship are not necessarily tied to its duration. Instead, they are rooted in the ability of a person, even one recently entered into our lives, to become irreplaceable, present, and in harmony with us.
Then, there are those individuals with whom life seems unimaginable without, whose beginnings of friendship we might not recall, with whom we might not share many
common interests or ideals, yet who persistently accompany us on our life's journey. This enduring connection, seemingly impervious to the passage of time or distance, could indicate bonds formed in past lives, rekindled in our current incarnation.
Discovering acquaintances from other lives is a journey of selfdiscovery. Sharing life with an inseparable companion offers an unparalleled opportunity for growth and unforgettable experiences.
PURPOSE OF REDISCOVERY IN PAST LIFE FRIENDSHIPS
Reconnecting with someone in this life might be intended to complete unfinished business from the past, a task of significant importance that necessitates partnership. Such affinity is often perceived as an emotional bond but can also contribute to spiritual development.
Various beliefs, religions, and cultures turn to regression as a means to uncover past life experiences and
answer the intriguing question:
"Who was I in another life?" This exploration involves different approaches, with focus being the key to uncovering the desired experiences.
When someone becomes indispensable in your life, and the connection is deeply emotional, indicating a close bond, it is important to embrace this friendship fearlessly. Not every story in this life follows a logical path; therefore, we should cherish good people and meaningful friendships for their unique experiences.
EXPANDING THE CONCEPT OF PAST LIFE FRIENDSHIPS
The idea of past life friendships adds a layer of mystery to our relationships and provides a broader perspective on how we interact and bond with others. These connections may manifest as an immediate sense of familiarity, an inexplicable depth of understanding, or an unspoken shared history that defies logic.
These relationships often serve as catalysts for personal transformation, pushing us towards introspection and growth. They may bring lessons we failed to learn in our past lives or
provide support for challenges we face in our current one. Sometimes, they might even remind us of forgotten promises or goals, urging us to pursue previously neglected paths. Moreover, past life friendships can challenge our conventional understanding of time and relationships. They suggest that our souls are on a continuous journey, crossing paths with others repeatedly across different lifetimes. This concept encourages us to view our relationships as part of a larger tapestry, woven through time and experiences, each interaction
carrying a significance beyond the immediate context.
In embracing the idea of past life friendships, we open ourselves to a more profound and spiritual understanding of our connections with others. We learn to appreciate the depth and complexity of our relationships, recognizing them as not just coincidental meetings but as part of a larger, interconnected spiritual journey. This perspective can lead to a deeper appreciation of our current relationships and a more mindful approach to nurturing them, knowing that they may have roots stretching far beyond our present existence.
Conscious Living focuses on mindfulness and awareness in daily life, emphasizing sustainable practices, ethical choices, personal growth, and a harmonious balance with the environment.
Can Feng Shui Remedies Help Sell a House?
By Kartar DiamondСan Feng Shui remedies help sell a house? This is a question that comes up regularly. When a house is languishing on the market, the real estate agent or the homeowner may begin to wonder if the services of a feng shui specialist can identify
what it is about the house that may be turning away or turning off prospective buyers.
Realtors often encourage sellers to make cosmetic improvements before selling a house. It's called "curb appeal." A fresh coat of paint, some
landscaping, new carpet, and lighting fixtures can make a house look more like it is in move-in condition.
Sellers are sometimes encouraged to remodel bathrooms and kitchens to also make a house more attractive for sale. Taken a step further, homes are often staged so that they can gloss over awkward areas, inspire creative solutions, and give prospective buyers a feeling of affluence and potential pride in owning such a residence, which can provide a desirable lifestyle.
But feng shui goes way beyond what you can see with your eyes.
From my perspective, the ease or difficulty in selling a house can sometimes be directly related to the current occupants' nonobvious' money luck'. In other words, if you live in a house that is considered bad for money potential, trying to sell it easily may just be one more manifestation of the house's bad influence or final sabotage on the current occupants' financial picture.
What does a house that is bad for money look like? This might be like asking what a woman who is 36 hours pregnant looks like. It is not obvious; rather, it is based on when the house was built and its compass orientation. Once a competent feng shui practitioner has identified a house that can be undermining for money luck, then remedies can be put in place for the sellers to improve their personal financial potential, assuming they are still living in the house. This has worked for my clients. They get the energy balanced in the house for
themselves, which translates into a quicker sale.
If the sellers are no longer living in the house up for sale, their delay in selling it can be attributed to the house they are dwelling in. You see, you cannot be affected by a property you are not living in, at least not directly. If you own a rental property with terrible energy for money luck, your tenants may struggle to pay the rent, which would affect you too. But if the rental house indicates some potential health problem, the property owner would not succumb to it if they are not living there.
What is often considered "curb appeal," and the more conventional updates done to a house intended for sale, can usually be considered good feng shui as well. Feng Shui adherents do not want to see things in disrepair, dilapidation, or neglect. We don't want to see things that are depressing, or that look unsafe. Regardless of their culture or values, most people have nearly universal responses to homes and what makes us feel welcome and comfortable versus off-putting or tense.
To sum it up: Yes, Feng Shui adjustments can help sell a house under a variety of circumstances:
A local demographic that takes Feng Shui into consideration.
Obvious esthetic or structural flaws that are considered bad Feng Shui, not just bad design. Non-obvious energetic features to a house which nevertheless influence both the buyer and seller.

The 7 Ghosts of Our Past that Are Relationship Crashers
by Johanna KernThe uninvited guest's growl and howl. They will get us where they want us if we don't deal with them.
We all want happiness in life. No one on this planet would truthfully
tell you that they want to be unhappy.
The quest for happiness in life is a two-sided coin. On the one hand, it requires us to let go of our expectations and appreciate
life for what it is – a wonderful journey to becoming who we truly are. On the other side, we need to put some effort into arriving at the place where we can fully be the person we are meant to be.
A happy relationship based on true Love is built on the same principles.
Happiness in a relationship is present because of our ability to let go of what weighs us down and, simultaneously, what we are willing to do for our relationship to thrive.
We want it to be a truly delightful feast where the two of us can enjoy our time together and celebrate what we have: Love.
But what if that feast we longed and planned for is interrupted by uninvited guests who appear at our beautifully set table with their own hidden, destructive agenda?
VISITING THE GHOSTS OF OUR PAST
They are the relationship crashers. Just as the wedding crashers can
come from either side: the bride's or the groom's – so do the relationship crashers. Often, they can appear from both sides:
The Fear of Change
The Fear of Getting Emotionally Hurt
The Fear of Rejection
The Fear of Loss of Freedom
The Fear of Inadequacy
The Fear of Loneliness
The Fear of Failure
Every wound that we have developed becomes a weakness that we tend to hide in our subconscious, "brushing it under the rug" – so to
speak. When not dealt with and not healed, that wound becomes a base for developing a subconscious Shadow that guards our weak spots with, one might say, "its own body." Such a Shadow becomes ruthless at the same time. A dark-natured bully who begins to control our behavior and feelings. The more unresolved past trauma we have, the more Shadows reside in our subconscious. The Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung was the first one to talk about dark energy as the building material for our Shadows. That is everything that we reject in ourselves and others.
Our subconscious Shadows take over to protect us from any possible harm. Whether there is a real danger or just some imagined possible threat, our Shadows come out and act on our behalf. As if someone pressed a button, we start behaving defensively, like robots on automatic pilot. In short, we keep sabotaging our relationships, happiness, right to success, abundance, and right to love and be loved.
When we begin a relationship based on true Love, we agree to take equal responsibility for sharing our Love. When any problems occur, we can't
just point our finger and say: "It's all your fault," or "You know that I'm screwed up. I can't help it." Actually, we can help it.
We can always help it if we really want.
The Ghosts of Our Past let us know of their presence sooner or later. Actually, each of us knows their Shadows well. We know how we may react, what we have done, and what we might do. So let us not pretend we are surprised by our Shadows' existence when they crash our relationship. And let us be equally
aware that the person we love will also have their own Shadows.
Now, it doesn't mean that we need to run away from Love or a chance to have a loving relationship when we are not yet healed. And let us not dismiss the possibility of loving and being with someone whose wounds might go very deep. Yes, it is best to take care of our mess before it becomes a deal breaker. But – the mere presence of the mess (the other person's or ours) is not a problem
that cannot be overcome. Unless it really is.
When we decide to love each other and grow together, we naturally take the risk of facing and dealing with our human nature.
Whether it's us, our partner, or both of us who need to do some healing – we need to be equally patient, supportive, and wise enough to know that the healing process takes some time.
This is the most important thing to remember when the Ghosts of Our Past appear to divide us and "put us in our place" – so that we won't dwell in the darkness of our misery so that we don't lose sight of the loving light of our Love.

The Energetic & Disruptive Influence of Tattoos
By OMTimesMy body is my journal, and my tattoos are my story.Johnny Depp
There are many forms of physical expression; we find tattoos among them.
The term tattoo comes from the French tatouage and, in turn,
from the English tattoo, having the most remote origin in Polynesian languages; the word tatau is used to describe one of the world's most known and culturally modified forms. The tattoo is a permanent drawing
made in the deepest subcutaneous region of the human skin by introducing pigments with needles.
Drawing and writing in one's own body comes from ancient times. There is much evidence that tattoos were used from ancient Egypt (4000 to 2000 BC) and by ancient Polynesian, Filipino, Indonesian, and New Zealand natives.
FOR MANY TODAY, IT IS ABOUT SYMBOLICALLY EXPOSING A TASTE, AN ATTITUDE, OR EVEN AFFECTION FOR A PERSON OR SOMETHING
Much more than a drawing on the skin, the tattoos and their images also represent energetic influences and deeper meanings that the tattooed person may not know. See the tips on the meanings of some symbols and guidelines on what to consider before tattooing the skin.
Ötzi , the famous mummy of a man who lived in 3300 BC, discovered in the Italian Alps in 1991, is covered with 61 tattoos in the form of groups of lines and crosses. Unlike modern methods, his tattoos were not produced with needles but through fine incisions in the skin where coal
dust was introduced. Ötzi tattoos are located at points where your body has undergone considerable strain during your life and most likely caused much pain due to wear and tear. Tattoos were, therefore, probably conceived as therapeutic measures and not necessarily as an attitudinal socially constructed or a symbol.
TATTOOS: THE SYMBOLIC IMAGES
Tattoos can be symbols with universal meanings, which also contain the personal impressions of those who want to tattoo them.
Tattooing a drawing can also be a form of expression, of wanting to experience what that drawing represents.
However, two people may have different visions and experiences using the same symbol. You tie the meaning you want to your tattoo to what others can see.
In the East, the tattoo was and is mainly used for religious purposes and tribal identification. In Hinduism, making a mark on the forehead is encouraged as this is believed to increase spiritual well-being. Several Hindu women tattoo their faces with
points, especially around the eyes and chin, to ward off evil and increase beauty. Local tribes use the tattoo to differentiate themselves from certain clans and ethnic groups.
THE ENERGY OF THE SYMBOLS IN TATTOOS. ARE THERE BIOENERGETIC IMPLICATION ON USING TATTOOS?
A tattoo is a graffiti on the temple of the body.
Gordon B. HinckleyWe are all subject to emotional, mental, and spiritual imbalances.
That which occurs in a person's physical body reflects in his energetic field and vice versa. In this sense, depending on the type and location chosen on the body, a tattoo will act to varying degrees, intensifying and possibly causing such imbalances.
For some energy healing experts, the chosen tattoo may represent a certain energy level that is not
healthy or ideal. The same goes for the place that one chooses to have the tattoo.
There are balance points in our body that, when undergoing external interference of a symbol, can lose all its balance. The human body is composed of channels of energy circulation, which interpenetrate the physical body with the functions of the various organs. One can only imagine what happens to the body if any of those channels undergo
blockages. If you already have a location in the body that is lacking balance, your energy may suffer even more alterations. That is why any alteration of the cellular pattern, even if superficial or skin, also changes the field of energy of a being because the physical and the energetic are closely linked.
Looking at it this way, we can say that a tattoo creates a new energy pattern for a person's aura, causing their vital vibrations to change their
flow and frequency, being diverted, drained, or even accumulated at that tattooed point. That may happen because these two fields, the physical body and the energetic one, are interconnected. These alterations can be confirmed through many modern radiesthesia studies.
TATTOO AND THE BEHAVIOR ELEMENT
It is an accepted hypothesis that people who tattoo their entire bodies or fill them with piercings carry intense memories of past
experiences involving warmongering.
Some have had retrocognitions when observing tattoos seen in their psychosomatic selves.
The tattoo on the body would evoke the same patterns of thoughts and feelings that marked those lives, which would undermine the tattooed person's current energy pattern by evoking these conflict situations. It is what we call the automimese1.
1 Existential auto mimesis is the conscious or unconscious repetition of experiences lived in previous intra-physical existences and may be pro-evolutionary or anti-evolutionary.
Stigmata. By acquiring a tattoo, the person is saying something about himself.
Self-stigmatization is how Conscientiology 2 classifies the tattoo, still defining it as a type of antiphysiological aberration, an antianatomic attitude comparable to self-flagellation, a self-stigmatization. Self-stigmatization is the act of the person performing a certain action, obvious or subtle, voluntarily
2 The name Conscienciopedia has its origin from the words Conscientiology and Encyclopedia.
and capable of stigmatizing it immediately, causing damage.
ACCESSING THE RIGHT BODY PART AND THE RIGHT SYMBOL
The place where you pick to receive your tattoo is of vital importance. Tattoos and piercings alter the flow of bioenergies that come in and out of our bodies. This effect seems to have been known for a long time, as shown by the tattoos found in Ötzi.
If you feel you tend to absorb the negative energy of others or you
are susceptible to energy vampires, you should avoid tattoos on the back of your neck. It is a point known to be one of the places that absorb flows of energy. The Om symbol at the back of the neck
can create the propensity for one to absorb even more energies from the environment; instead of protecting you, it is likely that the OM symbol will expand this possibility without limitations.
Another example is the use of the moon symbol. As a representation of mutability, constant change, and sensitive reality, the use of this symbol can aggravate the general emotional state of someone who is not emotionally stable.
The idea is to search for images with positive meaning for who will do the tattoo; this is the most advisable. After receiving the tattoo, it is important to consult with an energy therapist or acupuncturist.
It is because the body's meridians and the energetic field of each person must be rebalanced after the drawing is finally placed.
BE CERTAIN, AND NO REGRETS
Tattoos are permanent and a lifelong commitment, the same as marriage.
Chester Bennington
Information is never too much. One piece of advice that you are in doubt is to study the meaning of the symbol to tattoo if it does not have a very clear meaning. Living this meaning may be the best answer to understand if it is worth living with it in the body.
Constantly visualizing what you will tattoo is also a good way to get accustomed to the symbol. Try placing it in a frame and hanging it in the room so that the image can become more familiar.
Psychic Abilities: Gift or Curse?
By OMTimes AstrologyAre psychic abilities a gift or a curse, depending on what they bring into your life? Let's explore how this can manifest in both positive and negative ways.
Everyone is psychic. Being psychic is not a particular talent. Everybody has a left foot. Some people may just walk with that foot, some people may drag it, and some may learn to dance with it. —Frederick Lenz
ARE YOUR POWERS A CURSE?
First, let's look at the negative side. While a non-psychic might find such powers astonishing and desirable, a true psychic often suffers. More often than not, they ‘see’ and ‘hear’ are things they wish they didn’t.
It's inevitable; a person with psychic ability dreams of the future and sees bad things, or hears in their mind voices that are not friendly. The person then decides it is a curse and tries to shun their clairvoyance and clairaudience. But is there another way? Yes, and we will show you what you can do.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU DON’T WANT PSYCHIC POWERS
The psychic world is a dimensional plane that you can gain access to. It is a dimension of feeling and clear seeing. —
Frederick LenzDREAMS AND VISIONS
Firstly, when you dream of a warning or even have visions showing a future you don’t desire, usually it happens for a reason – so you can alter or avoid what is being shown.
People who dream vividly or have visions can turn something bad into a better outcome. Who wouldn’t want to do that? That’s why you experienced it beforehand, to avoid it.
For those who see an outcome they can't change, it might be more upsetting, but there is a solution for this. Talk to your angels and ask to stop seeing these things. Take action. Many people don’t realize they can do this. Check out our guide to the meanings of dreams.
VOICES IN YOUR MIND
It’s also common to hear negative voices from time to time. If you handle this correctly, the irritating and often dishonest beings trying to talk to you will never return.
Try laughing at them, calling them losers (nobody has the right to talk in your mind if they are not invited), and, again – ask your angels to move the entity towards the light. It works.
IS BEING OVERLY SENSITIVE OR EMPATHIC GOOD?
Is this a good thing? Ultimately, yes. Your psychic abilities are a gift. Despite
the fact that they can sometimes make life a bit challenging, in the grand scheme, you can live well with psychic powers, especially if you use them wisely.
Using them wisely involves asking yourself some questions: Do you work with your angels? Do you seek advice or help when making decisions? A tip is that your angels know what will work and what won’t even before you decide on a course of action. So, ask and listen carefully.
Everyone is born with psychic abilities. It's just a matter of knowing how to tap into it.
Julien Offray de La MettrieExpanding on this, managing psychic abilities effectively is crucial for mental and emotional wellbeing. It's about balancing the gift without letting it overwhelm you. It's also important to establish boundaries, especially for those who are empathic or highly sensitive.
Learning grounding techniques
and shielding oneself from overwhelming energies can be extremely helpful.
Moreover, it's beneficial to connect with a community or find a mentor who understands these experiences. They can offer guidance, support, and validation for your experiences. Remember, psychic abilities are not just about foreseeing the future or hearing voices; they can also be about deep intuition, understanding people’s
emotions intuitively, and having a profound connection with the world around you.
In essence, whether psychic abilities are a gift or a curse largely depends on how you perceive and manage them. With the right mindset and tools, what might initially seem like a burden can transform into a profound gift, offering insights and perspectives that enrich your life and potentially the lives of others?

Why People with Power Refuse to Share
By Marcia Sirota, M.D.It’s funny how some people who have lots and lots of power want more and more and how some people who have a ton of privilege feel like they need a ton more.
SCARCITY MINDSET
These two groups have something in common: a scarcity mindset.
They’re driven by a profound sense
of something lacking in their lives. They’re driven by the fear of not having “enough” even when they have so very much.
The problem with people who are dominated by this mentality is that the accumulation of more power or privilege cannot compensate for the emptiness they feel within.
They don’t realize that having “more” won’t fill them up. They don’t understand that what will actually satisfy them is the experience of loving connection, not greed and the hoarding of power.
ABUNDANCE MINDSET
The opposite of the scarcity mindset is the abundance mindset. This is the notion that there is enough to go around if we all share. It suggests that the world has plenty of resources if we stop hoarding and wasting so much.
People with the abundance mindset are happy to share what they have because they trust that they have enough. They are not afraid to lose their power or their privilege; in fact, they are happy for others to enjoy the same benefits.
People with a scarcity mindset compulsively pursue more power and more control, convinced that the problem is simply that they don’t have enough, and that once they get enough, they’ll be okay.
Many of these people will do everything they can to prevent others from having any power or privilege. This is done in the mistaken belief that sharing will somehow deprive them of what they can’t live without.
Lately, the people hoarding all the power and privilege are putting even more energy into attacking individuals and groups asking for their fair share.
The power-hoarders are upping their game.
The power hoarders are trying to deprive Black people of the right to vote by engaging in blatant gerrymandering. They are dragging out tired old falsehoods about the LGBTQ+ community. They are depriving women of their bodily autonomy. They are trying to keep immigrants and refugees out of their country. They are rewriting school books with shocking revisionist lies.
The ones holding onto power are so enraged and outraged (panicked, really) by the thought of having to share what they’re hoarding that they’re going to frightening lengths to have more power than they need and claw back what little power the disenfranchised groups might hold.
NOBODY WINS WHEN PEOPLE AND INSTITUTIONS HOARD ALL THE POWER
Nobody wins in this scenario except a tiny minority of the population. And not even them, because they
will never feel happy or at peace by pursuing this false goal.
Those of us – privileged white folks –who fear the “other” and who vote for white supremacist politicians are ignoring the lessons of history. With any proto-fascist government, the rights and freedoms of all the people become increasingly curtailed. Essentially, we are choosing to elect those who will eventually remove our power and privileges as well.
History shows us that the world veers to the right during challenging times.
We feel a sense of fear and lack and incorrectly perceive the “other” as competitors for the things we need.
WE LOOK TO AUTHORITARIAN LEADERS TO PROTECT OUR POWER AND PRIVILEGE
Then we look to authoritarian leaders to “protect” us from those “others” who might steal the few crumbs of power and privilege we possess.
We don’t see that these leaders don’t care about our welfare. They aren’t going to help us hold on to what we have. They certainly aren’t going to help us to have more.
The truth is that these leaders only care about themselves. They are narcissists and sociopaths who are selling us seductive lies in order to gain more power and influence for themselves. Once they’re in, we’ll be as oppressed as the groups we were competing with.
MOVING FROM A SCARCITY TO ABUNDANCE MINDSET
The answer is to move beyond the scarcity mentality and recognize that there’s enough out there for us
all to share. We don’t have to give up our privilege; we just need to accord others the same rights and opportunities.
We need to see the truth about the authoritarian leaders who preach a message of white supremacy. They will not bring more prosperity to our nations. They will not bring more peace. Look at any dictatorship. The ordinary citizens lose far more than they could imagine. These types of regimes bring repression and violence, even to those who put them in power.
INFORMATION IS POWER
When you’re afraid, inform yourself. Information is power. Information makes you less scared. Learn about history. Learn about authoritarianism. Learn about how sharing always works better than grabbing and hoarding power. In societies where people share the wealth, power, and privileges, there
is more harmony, a better quality of life, and better mental and physical well-being for everyone.
We all need to recognize that the scarcity mindset never leads to anything good. It leads to fear, anger, envy, and aggression, while an attitude of abundance leads to sharing, caring, kindness, compassion, and altruism.
What kind of society do we really want to live in? I know what I want. And it’s not based in fear.

Emotional Bravery is Stronger than Physical Courage
By Marcia Sirota, MD.When we think about what it means to be brave, we often think about taking physical risks, but we can also consider emotional bravery.
Being brave this way means being open and vulnerable. It means allowing people to really see you, thereby risking rejection, misunderstanding, and disapproval.
GOOD VIBES BE POSITIVE CONCEPT
Emotional bravery is harder than physical courage.
For many people, it’s much easier to be physically brave than to be emotionally courageous. They’d rather risk having a limb broken than having their heart broken.
This is probably due to the abundance of support for people who have been physically injured
and the dearth of emotional support for people who are experiencing emotional pain.
It takes more courage to be vulnerable.
There’s also a tremendous stigma associated with emotional suffering. A grown man can whine and moan about having a head cold, and nobody scoffs, but if he even mentions his emotional struggles, he’s more often than not looked at with scorn.
For that reason, it requires a double dose of emotional courage to be vulnerable. We need to brave public opinion at the same time as we’re taking our emotional risks.
THE UPSIDE OF BEING EMOTIONALLY BRAVE
So, what is the upside of emotional bravery? For one thing, it enables us to have closer, more meaningful relationships. We have more life satisfaction. We get to be our
authentic selves, which decreases our stress and increases our happiness. We’re more able to find our true community so we can experience a greater sense of belonging.
As scary as it can be to practice it, emotional courage offers a potentially huge payoff. It can lead to greatly improved mental health and physical well-being. Decreased stress and increased happiness directly impact our overall quality of life.
So, I invite everyone to think about how to be braver emotionally. I invite everyone to try doing one thing that’s a bit scary or risky on a feeling level.
VULNERABILITY: THE PATH TO GENUINE CONNECTION
And you should know that if you’re scared of being misunderstood, judged, or rejected, remember that being more vulnerable is a great test of the people around you. If you show them your real thoughts
and feelings and they don’t get you, or they reject you, it’s important information about them.
As long as you understand that the other person’s reaction to you is about them, not you, it’s less painful if they reject you. And as long as you understand that if they judge you or criticize you, it’s their problem, not yours, you can use these experiences as powerful opportunities for learning.
Being more open emotionally can help you see who your real friends
are and who are merely frenemies. It can help you to walk away from anyone who isn’t able to accept you for exactly who you are.
EMOTIONAL BRAVERY: THE COURAGE TO BE OUR AUTHENTIC SELVES
It takes a lot less effort to just be ourselves. It’s a lot more fun to be genuine. It’s a drag, constantly trying to be the way we think other people want us to be. Being emotionally brave makes us waste
less time and energy on peoplepleasing.
And people-pleasing is guaranteed to never make us happy. When we try to be what others want, they might enjoy our pleasing persona but don’t get to see who we are. We aren’t being loved for our true selves. We expend all that effort, but we’re left exhausted, resentful, and devoid of genuine affection.
The only way to be loved for our authentic selves is to show people
who we are. Yes, some of them might not like or want us, but we will know for certain that the love we’re receiving from those who stick around is real. And that is very gratifying.
Being emotionally brave means never worrying whether the people in our lives care about us. And that is very reassuring.
Emotional courage isn’t easy, but clearly, it’s worth it. Why not give it a try?

Shinrin-Yoku The Power of Forest Bathing
By John Holland"Have You Tried Forest Bathing?"
Ilove the outdoors! I feel very connected to nature, especially when I take Koda for walks around my neighborhood. So, when I heard about forest bathing, I had to try it.
"Forest bathing" became popular in the 80s as a remedy to help people recover from too much stress and techno-burnout. It emerged from a term created by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry
and Fisheries called shinrin-yoku, which means taking in the forest atmosphere.
You can practice forest bathing anywhere in nature—whether at a park, beach, lake, nature trail, a few trees, or any natural setting. It's all about letting go, living in the moment, and immersing your mind, body, and soul into nature's sights, sounds, and energy.
Spending less time worrying and more time in nature will help you
become more relaxed, motivated, happier about life, and more creative. Plus, this practice will boost your immune system, lower your blood pressure, ease anxiety, and even help improve your mental health.
JOHN'S MESSAGE
This week, I invite you to try this forest bathing exercise I've created just for you:
1. Visit one of your favorite nature spots—a park, the beach, or any area outdoors where you can walk
among some trees and foliage. Turn off your devices to fully immerse yourself in this natural environment.
2. Take a couple of deep breaths. Close your eyes and just listen to all the sounds around you. What do you hear? Waves? Is the wind blowing? Birds chirping? The rustling of leaves? Take it all in.
3. Open your eyes and take in all the sights around you. Really look
around and notice everything. Maybe it's the shape of a cloud or a tree branch's texture. Bask in the beauty around you.
4. Begin to walk slowly and let each of your senses soak in everything around you. Smell the fragrant flowers. Watch the leaves dance on the trees. Please pick up a rock or a seashell and feel its energy in the palm of your hand. Hug the trunk of a nearby tree. If you can, walk barefoot and connect with the earth.
5. Now, momentarily, stand still and send love and gratitude to this sacred space that has surrounded you with beauty. Breathe in the loving energy of nature before you, and breathe out loving energy from your heart and soul into this wonderful place. Feel the energy coming back into you. Feel the connection. Feel the joy!
6. Keep the energy flowing with these affirmations:
I am grateful for the earth and all its gifts.
I am recharged and reinvigorated by the beauty of nature.
When my feet touch the earth, I am grounded and supported.
Nature nourishes my soul.
Write down your thoughts in your journal. What benefits did you notice?
How did you reconnect with yourself?
Please share your experience with me on my Facebook and Instagram pages.
Live a Soul-filled life!

Shinrin-yoku: A Simple Guide to Forest Bathing
Imagine a therapy that doesn't cost a dime, has no side effects, and is at your doorstep. Welcome to the world of Shinrin-yoku, or as we call it, forest bathing. This isn't about taking a shower under the trees but something even more refreshing.
Shinrin-yoku started in Japan in the 1980s. It's a simple practice: just being in the forest, soaking up all the sights, sounds, and smells. It's like giving your mind and body a natural pill. Why? Because spending time in the forest can make you feel awesome!
Think about how relaxed you feel in a park or a garden. Now, imagine that feeling, but a hundred times better. That's Shinrin-yoku for you. It's not about hiking or jogging. It's slower than that. You just wander around, breathe deeply, and watch the sunlight filter through the
leaves. It's about enjoying the forest in a chill, no-rush way.
Here's why it's cool: Trees release substances called phytoncides. These are essential oils that protect them from germs and bugs. When we breathe them in, they boost our immune system. Scientists have found that forest bathing can lower stress, improve mood, and even help your heart and blood pressure.
So, how do you do it? Easy! Find a forest or a green space. Leave your phone and camera behind. The idea is to unplug and connect with
nature, not the internet. Then, just walk. Take it slow. Breathe in the fresh air. Touch the trees. Listen to the birds. Sit down and watch the world around you. Do this for a couple of hours, and voila! You've just done Shinrin-yoku.
Remember, there's no right or wrong way to do forest bathing. It's all about being present in the moment and taking in the beauty of nature. So next time you feel the need for a break, hit pause and head to the nearest forest. Trust us, you and your body will thank you for it!
